Welcome to Boise: A fisherman’s paradise by Jordan Rodriguez There aren’t too many cities in the world where you can walk out the back door of your downtown office, cross over the greenbelt and have immediate access to a beautiful trout stream. But thanks to the Boise River, that’s exactly what Treasure Valley residents enjoy. It’s a cool and rare treat to cast flies or spinners to healthy rainbow and brown trout amidst the urban bustle—yet another reason why Boise is such a great place to live, especially for outdoors enthusiasts.

MASSENET’S

Local fishing options extend well beyond the Boise River, too. To the west, the Owyhee River boasts some of the best brown trout fishing in the country. To the east, C.J. Strike Reservoir and a host of smaller lakes offer spectacular fishing for bass, bluegill, crappie and more. North of town, Lake Cascade has become a world-renown trophy perch fishery, while dozens of alpine lakes provide breathtaking landscapes brimming with beautiful cutthroat trout. And southwest of town, Lake Lowell is a thriving largemouth bass fishery, while the mighty Snake River offers excellent fishing for smallmouth bass, catfish and giant, prehistoric sturgeon. No matter what type of fishing you enjoy, you can do it all within a reasonable drive from Boise. And it’s a hobby that can be enjoyed year-round—most Idaho waters are open 365 days a year, and venturing out onto a frozen lake for some ice fishing is an exciting winter pastime.

A tender love story about a poet who would rather die than be without the woman he loves.

Some folks are intimidated by the perceived cost or difficulty of fishing, but you really don’t need much. A basic fly or spinning rod, a license ($25.75 for Idaho residents) and a small tackle box filled with flies (grasshoppers, midges, nymphs and streamers) or lures (spinners, spoons, jigs and some soft-plastic baits) will get you started. Heck, even a plain old worm on a hook will catch fish in most places. So get off the couch and go fishing! It’s a great way to relax with friends and family and enjoy the great outdoors. You’ll get to see new things, make new memories, and maybe even bring home some delicious fillets for the frying pan. Tight lines! Jordan Rodriguez is the fishing columnist for the Idaho Statesman in Boise. He also teaches a class titled “Stop Fishing, Start Catching!” through The College of Idaho’s Community Learning program in Caldwell www.cofifun.com.

In a World Filled With Chatter, Halo Hot Yoga Provides Distinct Peace

“Y

ou cannot predict the outcome of human development. All you can do, like a farmer, is create the conditions under which it will begin to flourish.”

Author Ken Robinson shared this notion during a TED Talk in 2010. The core of his statement glows heartily in Sallie Herrold. In her own unique and gentle way, Sallie is a farmer. As the owner of Halo Hot Yoga in Meridian and Hollywood Market Yoga in Boise, she cultivates an environment where yogis of all ability can comfortably grow in their practice. Six years ago, Sallie began practicing yoga. Like many beginners, she spent time looking around the room wondering how a person could possibly hold a half moon pose for two straight minutes, yet she found enjoyment in each class. She curiously explored different studios, various classes, and eventually a teacher training. “I had no intention of teaching yoga,” Sallie says. “I truly just wanted to learn more about it.” 20

With a background in business and a love for marketing, Sallie felt the pull to have a yoga studio of her own. “If it’s meant to be, something will happen for you. And it will happen very easily and naturally,” she imparts. Few things are as easy and natural as those ideas that come to us in our dreams, which is exactly what happened to Sallie. “I literally had a dream one night that I had a yoga studio in the North End. So, I drove around looking for a building, and the old Hollywood Market store was for sale.”

GREENBELT MAGAZINE | JAN - FEB 2017

Although the conception of her second studio was not prefaced with a premonition, it was significant nonetheless. Amidst a potentially terminal personal tribulation, Sallie signed the lease to the Meridian yoga studio formerly known as L’hotse. As a former L’hotse client, she was armed with fond memories of the studio as it transitioned to what is now Halo Hot Yoga.

and be present?” It’s almost difficult to visualize the slowing of pace and increase in connection that would occur if everyone took heed to Sallie’s instruction. While it may take a while to be comfortable disconnecting on a whim, the journey is made easier through yoga and Halo is a welcoming place to start.

Olivia Humeston, a current Halo member, notes, “this particular studio provides not only an environment that promotes practice of yoga, but also instills inspiration.” This atmosphere is vital for the overwhelmingly new-to-yoga clientele that join Halo. The studio offers an average of six classes per day, ranging from the ever-popular Hot Hour to the freestyle flow of Vinyasa, which encourages clients to challenge their bodies in ways that inspire constant physical change. Pushing poses to a new level is motivating in its own right, but Sallie isn’t just helping people find yoga, she’s helping them find everything else. From a very young age, we are taught to think too much, worry too much, and regret too much. “The quiet time at the end is what matters the most,” she reminds us. “It’s when you can listen to yourself.” Periods of breathing and silent rest are the moments in yoga that took Sallie from a fan to an addict. “How much better would our society be if we taught people just to sit still and relax? If we taught them the ability to stop chatter

Clothing That Celebrates Wherever You Call Home

ucked away in a converted warehouse space in Garden City, creativity is flowing from the newest home of Fawn and Foal. For nearly 10 years, their Idaho apparel has successfully captured the playful and positive voice that is Boise, Idaho. On this particular evening, a photo shoot is taking place for their new website. Music and warm light emit from outside the shop’s metal roll-up door. Inside, boxes of pizza are stacked on tables with beers and paper plates next to them. A group of friends waste no time gathering around a worktable of clothing separated by size and color. They begin layering t-shirts, sweatshirts and hats, pausing to turn up the music or strike ridiculous poses in front of the painted drop cloth. The photographer eggs them on, dancing to the beat. In the center of the excitement, owner and artist Juliana McLenna grabs a slice of pizza while her family dog Eugene weaves in and out of her feet. Her two kids, busy with a project of their own,

occasionally jump in for a photo and then run away, overcome with giggles. The effortlessness to which Juliana orchestrates a night like this is a testament to Fawn and Foal’s success. The seamless way a business can invite play and collaboration in combination with kids and creativity, appears to come easily to their brand. However, when looking back on the different forms of Fawn and Foal, it has been a 10 year-long adventure to find their sweet spot. Fawn and Foal began with husband and wife duo Juliana and Ben McLenna’s journey to find each other. Their travels before meeting took them everywhere from New Orleans to Utah, Africa and Paris before they eventually fell in love in Texas. A few moves later, and more wonderful homes to add to their list, the two returned to Boise, Idaho. The significance of their journey became even more solidified as Fawn and Foal made the decision to expand their line of GREENBELT MAGAZINE | MAR - APR 2017

here are those who talk about doing things, and there are those who go and do the things. Kayla-Leah Rich is the latter. A little over a year ago, she was presented unexpectedly with offer to go to Haiti and volunteer in a mobile medical clinic. She had never traveled abroad, was admittedly nervous about not knowing what she would eat in another country, and she was just plain scared at the thought of something so far out of her comfort zone. For her, that was a clear sign that she needed to go and expand her horizons. “It was a ‘yes’ experience,” Rich explained. “There is growth in saying yes.” She was inspired by a close network of women who were out in the world doing things to make an impact and she was ready to get in on the action. While in Haiti she witnessed the challenges of extreme poverty firsthand, and to make matters worse, her time of the month came outside her usual cycle during the trip, and without the luxury of feminine supplies on hand. The shocking reality set in that this experience is all too standard for countless women around the world, especially in third world countries, where it means missed days of school and work for women for the duration of their periods. Rich had heard of an organization called Days for Girls before and like a lightning bolt, the importance of their organization hit her. Within one week of returning home, she was busy starting up a local chapter of this global nonprofit in Meridian, Idaho. Days for Girls is comprised of four critical pillars: 24

1. Sewing and assembling reusable feminine hygiene kits for global distribution. 2. Raising funds to hire women in third world countries to carry on these programs into the future, providing employment to these hard-working women. 3. Building awareness and changing the dialogue around the female reproductive system to ultimately remove negative stigma and shame. 4. Filling local needs, right here in our community, of sanitary products through grant funding. The education element has been life changing for both the women and the men who participate in classes led by volunteers

like Rich. Personal hygiene basics, simple lessons on anatomy, and information about reproduction have given them empowerment to understand their bodies and help them to avoid infections and plan for their futures more effectively. With a goal of taking 1,000 kits back to Haiti, Rich has worked tirelessly and has organized over 20 events throughout Meridian, enlisting the helping hands of over 600 volunteers. In November 2016, she and a small team made a second trip to Haiti and delivered 464 kits, while a few hundred more were shipped to India and Uganda, and plans for a delivery to Jamaica are in the works for early spring 2017. Rich isn’t a one-trick pony. Far from it. She runs a drywall business with her husband, is a busy mom of four boys, facilitates workshops that will change the way you organize your home inside and out, she is a dynamic public speaker, and an author. Check out her new book, Fun to be You with Purple Crayon Confidence.

Rich has been selected as a speaker for the TEDxBoise event April 8, 2017 where she will speak candidly about a subject that we really all have in common. Periods. Without menstruation cycles, none of us would be here. It is a natural, beautiful gift that builds families. Her goal is to normalize the subject and remove the shame that half the world’s population carries. You can join in on the conversation on Facebook in a public group she has created called, you guessed it, “Periods.”

Behind every successful woman is a fabulous (fully customizable, high-quality, leather) handbag!

C

hic and functional. A killer combination every woman wants to hear when buying a handbag. We have all, at some point, had to compromise on elegance for functionality or vice-versa. Visionary entrepreneur, Kimberly Mitchell-Catlett’s brainchild, Bella Modi Handbags which was launched in November last year aims to eliminate that need for compromise. Bella Modi offers customers the uncompromising ability to design their own bag, hence making it a personal statement piece. I want to empower and enable women to have what they need to be successful. Every little tool that makes a woman’s life easier is one step closer to getting where she needs to be that day or that night.” “My grandmother loved her Italian roots. When I was little and visited her, she would try to speak Italian and she always greeted me with the word, ‘Bella’, which means beautiful. Bella Modi means ‘Beautiful Ways’. The name is a tribute to my late grandmother,” Mitchell-Catlett explained of the significance of Bella Modi’s name.

26

Nestled in a cozy office downtown, you’ll find Mitchell-Catlett, a one-woman operation, working on every aspect of her business from purchasing, marketing, and sales to painstakingly stitching and assembling each and every handbag herself. Mitchell’s inspiration for Bella Modi was born of a need to design customized shoes for her size 5 feet. She was tired of the difficulty of replacing her favorite shoes and having to shop in the kids’ shoe department. “The only shoes that could fit me had Hello Kitty designs on them,” she grinned. Mitchell-Catlett had always known that she wanted to create and produce shoes and handbags. However, the process of creating the interchangeable shoe system proved to be more complicated than anticipated. She finally decided to leave the product development, temporarily, to the specialist team she works with that spans the globe. Instead, she shifted her focus to something else that she could be more productive at. Handbags! The whole process for Bella Modi Handbags took nine months from conception to the finished product. GREENBELT MAGAZINE | MAR - APR 2017

Curious about how the process works, Mitchell-Catlett took me through the steps. A customer starts off by using the online configurator tool on the Bella Modi website to build a bag in real time. The first choice to be made is from one of the three fully or one moderately customizable bags that are made from high-quality leather. This is where the fun begins. Customers can mix and match the handles, closures, exterior pockets, lining, internal and external colors. While the options for purchase are now via the office or website, Mitchell-Catlett’s vision for the future includes direct sales and home parties. Mitchell-Catlett shared, “this is not just a bag for women. It is geared towards men, too, who want to give that special someone not just a handbag off the shelves, but one that they had a fun experience of designing and a look that they can take ownership of.”

For Mitchell-Catlett, the road to Bella Modi has been a bumpy one. She has had eye-opening experiences attempting to get it off the ground. With no prior skills in creating bags, she sought the services of self-proclaimed experts, one to whom she even paid $3600 to create what she had envisioned. I was privy to a viewing of it, and saying that the returned product looked like it wasn’t fit for sale would have been an understatement. Mitchell-Catlett went from never having sewed before to designing, patterning, and making the handbags, completely self-taught. When asked what advice she would give aspiring entrepreneurs, she offered, “be prepared for the long haul. And even more than that, do not discount your own level of intelligence. If something feels wrong, or feels right, it probably is. If you think you can do it better, you probably can.” She also added that a good support system is always valuable. She turns to her husband, who has a background in marketing, to “bounce off ideas.” Mitchell-Catlett said that she sees, an addition of designs such as wallets and backpacks in Bella Modi’s future. She hopes to grow into a big business which gives back to the community. A manufacturing facility and a team to focus on the consistent production of exquisitely-designed bags are in sight.

Local Mompreneur Launches Adjustable Childrenswear Line

aving children in today’s age is akin to navigating a china shop with a blindfold on. Gingerly marching forward, arms outstretched, praying you don’t cause any permanent damage. We want what’s best for our kids and we feel the everpresent parental guilt when we can’t provide them with the best clothing, schooling, nutrition, etc. Whitney Sokol, Boise mother and founder of SproutFit childrenswear, aims to change the way you invest in your child’s wardrobe, allowing your purchase to have a positive environmental and socio-economic impact. This January, I sat down with Whitney to discuss her inspiration for founding SproutFit and learn more about her product. After her first child turned one, Whitney began compiling for donation those items he no longer fit into. Upon finishing the monstrous task of organizing by size and type, she realized the absurdity of the sheer mass of clothing articles her small son had acquired in his single year of life - six 30-gallon containers full! Some items had never even been worn, as they were too quickly outgrown or ill-fitting on his slender frame. 28

You don’t need me to enumerate the reasons why the globalization of the clothing manufacturing industry has resulted in harmful processes for the environment and further propagated unethical labor practices. Most of us are aware there are negative effects of mass globalization of commodities. We’re also aware of the benefits; a lower price point and the convenience of purchasing at the nearest big-box store. All too often we allow these two factors to determine what and where we buy, while ignoring the silent impact. Out of her astonishment at the incredible waste occurring in her own home, Whitney began brainstorming to find a better way to clothe babies and toddlers. As a mother, she felt overwhelmed by the variation in children’s clothing. First and foremost, she was tired of the sizing chart almost every manufacturer followed, seven sizes in the first two years. She knew first hand that babies grow rapidly during this time. Still, she felt there was a better way. Out of her frustration, grew SproutFit, an adjustable childrenswear line designed to stretch and adapt to your growing baby throughout their first two years.

GREENBELT MAGAZINE | MAR - APR 2017

Equivalent to her desire to provide a better fitting wardrobe was her insistence upon ethical practices throughout the manufacturing process. Her line would be made in the USA from renewable resources and the carbon footprint of production kept to a minimum. Whitney spoke affectionately about the number one motivating factor behind the SproutFit line, her own son.

time to worry about the important things and less money spent on clothing that will be discarded quickly.” SproutFit has the solution to the children’s clothing debacle,; simple, sustainable, sensible childrenswear.

“As a mom, I’m always looking for ways to protect my child and his future, and that begins with choosing clothes that are sustainable in both design and material.” SproutFit is using Kickstarter to support the launch of its childrenswear line, with pledges accepted February 24nd – March 26th. Parents rejoice! No more rummaging through the drawers looking for the right size bodysuit. Whitney shared with me the capsule wardrobe concept and how SproutFit’s line simplified parent’s lives. “When you ask people what they want more of, time and money are two of the most common answers. Building a capsule wardrobe for babies represents just that! A capsule wardrobe is a collection of a few essential items of clothing that typically don’t go out of fashion, but can be augmented with seasonal pieces. We want to solve problems, not create more. Richard’s Is Setting The Bar In Downtown Boise Award Winning Chef Relocates and Expands Menu at Boutique Hotel

W

hen Chef Richard Langston learned about a new “boutique hotel” opening in downtown Boise in 2017 it piqued his interest. Chef Langston and his wife and business partner, Melinda, have been looking for the perfect location to build their own restaurant in downtown Boise for the last several years to expand the successful Richard’s Café Vicino. That opportunity came when Chef Langston contacted Inn at 500 Capitol owner Brian Obie expressing interest in relocating to the hotel. What Chef Langston didn’t know is that Obie had already taken notice of the locally celebrated chef and his restaurant Richard’s Café Vicino in Boise’s North End. Serendipitously, Obie had also mailed Chef Langston a letter to gauge his interest. Chef Langston and Melinda toured the hotel’s sister property in Eugene,

30

Oregon and liked what they experienced and saw great potential in the Inn at 500 Capitol. The Inn sets a high bar for guest experience, which is right in line with what Chef Langston and his staff strive to provide their customers. “This isn’t a typical hotel restaurant,” said Chef Langston, “but rather an independent chef-owned restaurant in a boutique hotel like you’d see in Portland.” The Langstons officially opened their doors January 9, 2017 at 500 S. Capitol Blvd., in Boise. The new restaurant, simply called “Richard’s,” offers the exceptional cuisine and dining experience that his loyal customers have come to love. The restaurant’s design provides restaurant goers an elegant and comfortable atmosphere for dining or just enjoying a drink at the bar, and features wellappointed finishes and elements that add to the ambience. In addition, the increased space allows Richard’s to provide private dining and banquet rooms, seasonal outdoor dining, and a full bar. While the location has changed, the food is still prepared with the same culinary philosophy that celebrates the integrity of GREENBELT MAGAZINE | MAR - APR 2017

ingredients, sourced locally when possible, and prepared simply to showcase the natural flavors of the products. According to Chef Langston, his food is a “modern take on regionally inspired Italian/ Mediterranean cuisine.” The menus retained all of Chef Langston’s most popular dishes from Café Vicino, but he has added daily breakfast and weekend brunch menus to the delight of customers.

“It has been a wonderful experience to design and build a restaurant that both Melinda and I feel will give Boise that exceptional dining experience it deserves,” said Chef Langston, “it has always been a dream for us to provide our customers with the best restaurant experience in Boise, and I think we are on our way there.”

If you would like to experience Richard’s in downtown Boise, visit them at 500 S. Capitol Blvd. Reservations are QuarterPageVertical-Greenbelt.pdf 1 10/22/2014 11:11:56 AM recommended for dinner. You can see their menus or make reservations at richardsboise.com

Handmade Knives That Chop With Charm Husband and Wife Team Inspired by Artisans of Their Ancestry

T

he lost art of hand-crafting knives is alive and well for two local artisans. For them, it’s a passion.

Justin and Kelsey Halbert make up Snake River Forge, the husband and wife partnership producing handmade kitchen and field knives here in Boise. Starting out with steel bars, Justin forges the high-performance blades and fits them to intense specifications. Together, they select from a variety of woods, brass, antler, and copper to assemble one-of-a-kind handles for their work, and if the customer requests, Kelsey finishes the blades with a unique fine-art etching. “They’ve made some amazing knives for me,” says Nick from Phoenix. “They stay sharp and have a great feel and look to them.” “It is so nice to know that there are some things left in the world that are still handmade,” says Cole from St. George. “My knife is awesome and never fails.”

32

Peek into the small shop here in Boise, and you will likely find Justin triple-checking edge geometry on a chef knife, slowly grinding away at a blade until it moves effortlessly through whatever it’s asked to cut. If he’s not in front of the grinder with a chef knife, then he is at the forge, heating the shaped steel to over 1400 degrees Fahrenheit, “critical temperature” as fellow blacksmiths know it, only to plunge the red hot steel into heated oil, thus quenching the knife and giving it its hardness. Precision work requires not only knowledge on a vast array of metallurgical processes but also hours of attention, so the shop light is often on well after dark. The long hours are worth it, and selecting materials is one aspect of their knives that brings special satisfaction. “As the world gets faster and everything is made as cheaply as possible, I think one reason our knives resonate with people so well is that they are a splash of thoughtfulness in your life,” says Kelsey. “It’s comforting. You’re not holding something where the costs have been driven down for a higher profit. Nature made your knife handle.” Those wooden handles go through a careful process, GREENBELT MAGAZINE | MAR - APR 2017

starting with the selection of woods that show the best grain structure possible for the species of tree, moving through careful drying conditions until they are shaped and petrified for both protection and waterproofing. “Everything is obsessed over,” says Justin. “Making knives is demanding, so we have to evaluate every detail of the blades, the shape, and the handles. Certain traditional Japanese knives

are ground thinner than their western counterparts, for example. Honoring that history is important. It’s what those extra hours are for. At the end of the day, our knives are only finished when they are both a pleasure to cut with and sturdy enough to stand up to a lifetime of use.” Thus, it’s no surprise that Snake River Forge knives come with a lifetime guarantee.

“In Idaho, there are over 35,000 children under the age of 3 who are living in low income or poverty. As it turns out, many of these families are juggling to provide basics for their babies: food, shelter and hygiene. When it comes to hygiene, there is ZERO governmental assistance to help the families; food stamps cannot be used to purchase diapers. And, diapers are expensive.”

diaper needs in Idaho Federal assistance for families in poverty excludes basic hygiene needs, including diapers

“B

y focusing on ‘Diaper Need’, the Idaho Diaper Bank works to meet the basic needs of children and families. Diapers, often a hidden consequence of poverty, are essential to a child’s wellbeing and healthy development,” shared Shawna Walz, Founder and Executive Director of the Idaho Diaper Bank (IDB). Drawing on her own experiences in becoming a parent, Walz founded the Idaho Diaper Bank nonprofit in 2014. “I felt very blessed that I had everything I needed...financial resources, supportive family, a loving husband, a stable home, and more,” Walz said, “Even with those resources at my disposal I realized that raising kids is a Herculean task. As I thought about that, it was clear to me that there were mothers who didn’t have these resources. I looked at the poverty surrounding me and couldn’t imagine the degree of stress that the babies and their parents were encountering.“ Each month, the IDB nonprofit provides over 40,000 diapers and diapering supplies as well as incontinence supplies to more than 40 partner distribution organizations around the state to distribute to local families. This year, IDB is launching their ‘Warehouse on Wheels’ program to help bring diapers to families in rural counties around the state of Idaho. 34

The IDB acquires diapers through working with the NDBN (National Diaper Bank Network) and larger diaper manufacturers; as well as companies such as Green Mountain Diapers, Vicki’s Diapers, and Boise Cloth Company who have provided cloth diapers as well as sanitation services.

“To reliably and consistently provide diapers to the increasing IDB partner recipient agency roster, we have had a huge increase in the number of volunteers and volunteer hours needed to accomplish our tasks. Each month, we have what we call “Pick-n-Pack volunteers” who help us get nearly 40,000 diapers organized and ready to be picked up or shipped to our partner recipient agencies. We are truly grateful for all the help our numerous volunteers and our IDB Board Members have contributed to this effort.” In addition to ‘Pick n Pack’ there are other ways to contribute to IDB including holding diaper drives, hosting No Gala’s Gala, the cloth diaper sewing program, and helping with activities related to September’s National Diaper Need Awareness Week. Walz shared, “When I founded the organization, I thought it was primarily about providing diapers. Today, I realize that we are actually providing families with a glimpse of hope, with dignity, and with an opportunity to break the cycle of poverty. While diapers may seem like a small thing, research has shown the tremendous impact that they can make in strengthening families.”

LOCAL VETERANS CREATE SWISS ARMY KNIFE BACKCOUNTRY CAMPER MILITARY-GRADE MULTI-TRAILER MANUFACTURED IN EAGLE

A group of veterans have teamed up to create a unique invention, the UGOAT. This ultimate military-grade trailer transforms and connects, sleeps up to seventeen, configured with kitchenette, shower and bathroom, has interchangeable parts, is a massive hauler, and is solar powered to truly go off-grid. Its extensive adaptability is uncommon, and could only come from a strategic military mind. Owner, Ray Gore, began the undertaking after seeing something similar, albeit overly complex, non-versatile, and unreasonably expensive, and embarked on intensive R&D and discovered he could do it better and at a lower price point. The impressive UGOAT team consists of four marines and an air force vet; Ray, and his son Austin, Jim, Rick and Matt. These men are inspirational; not only did they serve to protect us, they are utilizing their combined ingenuity and field experience to save us from the unnecessary expenses of owning separate trailers to accomplish three useful tasks. Instead, the UGOAT Scout multi-trailer is a tough backcountry camper, toy hauler, and landscape trailer all-in-one! If that’s not incredible enough, they’re loyal to the Idaho, manufacturing in Eagle, by keeping dollars here. Their website has a build-your-own trailer menu selection of clickable add-ons that when selected will calculate the cost of the UGOAT. The standard Scout model is strong enough to haul big gear on the bed, like an ATV, and extra gear up top, like canoes, kayaks or hunting gear. You can build-up by adding on camper top, aluminum storage boxes, hot on-demand shower, full kitchen set up, pioneer axe, and shovel with mounts, and the list goes on. Visit their outdoor store and shop in the same building as North End Organic Nursery, in Garden City, where you can check out the inventory.

spotlight on fiberpipe data centers Fiberpipe Ensures the Success of Idaho’s Techology Companies

“I

f you’ve ever streamed a movie with Netflix or used a popular website like Amazon or Ebay, you may have taken your experience for granted. But providing quick and reliable online services doesn’t come easily. It’s made possible through data centers, which play a crucial role in the storage and distribution of online data. Thanks to companies like Fiberpipe Data Centers, Idaho companies have a solution to their data needs in their own backyard. Although Idaho is home to several data centers, Fiberpipe Data Centers is the only company founded and grown in Idaho. Created in January 2000 by Ken Birch, a founding member of Micron PC, Fiberpipe has a rich history of growth and expansion in Idaho. Since being commissioned, Fiberpipe has provided 100% uptime to its customers – meaning the data center has never lost power or had a lapse in the services it provides to its customers. Fiberpipe, like many data centers, provides two main services to its customers: Colocation and disaster recovery. Colocation means the center provides the building, bandwidth, cooling, power, and security to customers that need a location to host their servers. Disaster recovery services act as insurance to companies that could lose their data or infrastructure during an emergency. Fiberpipe’s facility not only keeps tech companies running during a crisis, but also provides space for displaced employees to temporarily set up shop at Fiberpipe’s headquarters during their recovery efforts. 40

Just like brick and mortar stores need physical space to grow, technology companies need data centers to expand their online presence across the world. Although data centers can be found around the country, they have specific requirements they look for when choosing a site for a new facility. Boise is prime real estate for data centers in several ways. Data centers draw a lot of power and Idaho’s power costs are among the lowest in the nation. According to a Forbes report by Sperling’s Best Places, Boise ranked as the second safest location in the country for weather and other disasters. Finally, the quality of life and growing tech community are attractive characteristics for data centers looking to bring employees in and expand their presence. For these reasons and more, Fiberpipe has thrived in Idaho and they have invested in growing their local community. Fiberpipe is a proud member of the Better Business Bureau, the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce, and the Idaho Technology Council (ITC), a non-profit association for Idaho tech companies. Through their involvement with the ITC, Fiberpipe has supported initiatives to strengthen Idaho’s educational efforts and build a stronger talent pipeline for local companies. For example, Fiberpipe employees have participated in the Idaho Hour of Code, an annual educational event that exposes K-12 students to foundational principles of computer science. GREENBELT MAGAZINE | MAR - APR 2017

Looking towards the future, Fiberpipe hopes to be among the companies that expand their data centers in Idaho. Supporting the growth of data centers is a business investment that pays off in many ways. It’s well documented that data centers create a significant amount of construction employment for an average length of two years. Once complete, the significant investment in equipment generates millions of dollars in sales, real estate, and personal property taxes for the state. Recently, one independent contractor estimated that the development of a data center in Idaho could generate up to 1,100 jobs, half a million labor hours, and nearly $16 million in payroll. With these statistics, it’s clear that data centers are a boon to any urban community, which is why many states have incentives to encourage data centers to invest in their communities. To date, 30 states have incentives specifically for data centers. Surprisingly, despite its many other advantages, Idaho is the only state in the Pacific Northwest that does not have incentives for data centers. Recent legislation sponsored by the Idaho Department of Commerce hopes to change this, but regardless of the outcome, Fiberpipe hopes to continue its strong ties to Idaho. The values and qualities cultivated in our state – hard work, innovation, and independence – lend itself well to a growing data center company. As Idaho’s technology companies continue to grow, Fiberpipe will be there to ensure their success. Fiberpipedatacenters.com • 208.331.3232

Susan Loyd and Sandy Broun, sisters and former corporate employees, saw a good flow of customers almost immediately after opening the restaurant in late January 2016 at 115 S. Broadway. The menu and atmosphere, and location in a recently renovated plaza on the downtown Boise side of the bridge, helped generate business immediately. And since the bridge was closed when the restaurant opened, “we had nothing to look back on,” Loyd said. “We’ve just had steady growth since we opened.” Broun said bridge closure may have even benefited Tin Roof Tacos early on. “We think it kept people this direction (north) because they couldn’t go south on Broadway for other lunch options,” she said. Revenue tracked at or above projections throughout the period of the bridge closure, and remains stronger than anticipated, Loyd

42

and Broun said. The neighborhood welcomed Tin Roof Tacos, which drew repeat business from many of the first customers. By the time September rolled around, more customers found the restaurant as the school year started and as the bridge’s completion opened access from the south along Broadway to Interstate 84. “We are still going strong,” Loyd said. Tin Roof Tacos owners said they got valuable help right away with people involved in financing, permitting and move-in. When the roughly 2,000-square-foot restaurant opened, cooks and other staff got off to a good start, setting the stage for solid results with breakfast, lunch, and dinner trade as well as group business. The restaurant is open daily from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., and until 10 p.m. during Daylight Savings Time. “Our customers ask us daily to open another location near where they live,” Broun said. That could happen later this year, though a site is yet to be determined, she said. “We will just keep enjoying what we are doing,” Loyd said. GREENBELT MAGAZINE | MAR - APR 2017

Originally from Dallas, Broun moved to Boise a few years ago with a large company, working in sales management. Loyd followed in the summer of 2015 after working for a hospital management company fulltime and a relative’s similar restaurant part-time. Loyd enjoyed working in the Texas eatery and considered replicating it on the Gulf Coast. Broun suggested she come to Boise, and the two launched Tin Roof Tacos because it looked promising and fun while offering more flexibility than corporate life. Loyd’s children were grown and her husband had died of cancer in 2009. Broun herself is a cancer survivor. “I love it and I don’t want to leave,” Broun said. “This is a great location.” “Our product is simple, fresh and will not go out of style,” Loyd said. Tin Roof Tacos, which employs about 25, joined other new tenants in the Broadway 111 plaza, which Boise-based owner Hawkins Cos. renovated.

Locally-Owned Coffee Shop with a Different Approach fter sixteen years of working as a barista, Jeannie Jackson sold everything she owned to buy an old Moxie Java and turn it into a coffee shop of her own.

Off Parkcenter Boulevard, Zero-Six Coffee Fix is in the heart of Southeast Boise. Being open for just over a year, the coffee shop has grown to have a recognizable customer base. Jeannie previously worked at the location before Zero-Six, when it was Moxie. While working as a barista, she dreamt of later owning her own coffee shop. Sixteen years later Jeannie sold everything she had, including her house, to buy Zero-Six’s location. Though it was difficult in the beginning, her customers as well as her baristas have followed her through the transition from Moxie to Zero-Six, creating a family. “This place is my home,” she shared, expressing the love she has for the shop. She explained what makes her establishment so different. “We don’t want to do pure customer service, you can’t train it- we organically want to be a part of customer’s lives.” A theme that is regularly seen at the coffee shop where they create a “Cheers” like environment where the baristas know (close to) everyone’s name. “Peoples’ names are important,” explained the owner. That’s why customers don’t go long without everyone knowing their name. 44

Walking in, you’ll always have a warm welcome from either the owner herself or one of her friendly baristas. They show their love by getting to know you on a personal level. You’ll be engaged in friendly conversation while waiting for your favorite beverage. After a few visits, they’ll even start your coffee before you reach the register. The décor is cozy yet bright, with a side of quirkiness. Colorful chandeliers hang from the ceiling and comfy printed couches alongside a fireplace create a fun, home-like environment. At Zero-Six, you won’t only feel like a part of the family, but you will also be enlightened by humorous coffee names such as the

Sweaty Bieber, a habanero raspberry latte, or the Southern Belle, or a pecan pie french vanilla dark mocha. You can find unique creations made by the owner herself, local art vendors, and Boisemade merchandise like bath bombs made from tea they serve. Most things found at Zero-Six were created by Jeannie herself with the help of customers. When starting up, she had to recreate the place while adding her own style to make it a shop of her own. From fresh paint on the walls to handmade clouds that hang above the menu, the location is made from the hearts of Jeannie and the Zero-Six community. When asked about the unique name, it was inspired from the zip code of the location, giving recognition to Southeast Boise. “We want to give back to the zip code [83706]” Jeannie explained, “to make an impact on people that never ask.” Jeannie regularly gives back to the local area by giving money along with free coffee cards to businesses in the zero six area. In one instance, she gave $200 to Dollar Tree around Christmas for the customers, to ease the holiday spending for some. The future is bright for Zero-Six as Jeannie says it will hold “nothing but amazing things.” “We hope everyone that comes here now still comes here, and [also] new people. We have lots of love to share.” Zero Six Coffee Fix • 404 E Parkcenter Blvd • Boise, ID 83706 • Hours: M-F 6am-6pm • Sat 7am-4pm • Sun 8am-2pm 208.424.9463
