Boise Escape, Do You Have What It Takes?

SPOKE Hello Greenbelt Readers! In the first years of this magazine, Boise wasn’t on the top ten lists of Forbes or any other major news outlet. Greenbelt Magazine was just a lightweight direct-mailer distributed in Southeast Boise, and my team would humbly meet to manage editorial ideas and such. Now it’s a bit different. With the economic growth and collaboration between city and business, the magazine went through a redesign, the Greenbelt airport store was born, a giveback Greenbelt merchandise program with Boise City Parks & Rec developed, and now we’re opening a store on the Greenbelt on 34th street. I could not have imagined a day when the magazine would be so quickly available both locally and regionally, have diversification in products, and would be experiencing this kind of growth. Speaking of growth on a larger scale, we’re delighted to spotlight some of Boise’s female entrepreneurs that bring innovation and national success to the valley. FiftyFlowers owner Liza Roeser-Atwood followed her motto, “Just keep doing” and “follow that shining star” to create a direct to consumers’ front door for flowers. Cherie Hoeger and Amber Fawson's of Saalt are expanding to the UK and Australia with record-breaking sales of the modern-designed sustainable period cup and their mission to help. And Red Aspen, led by co-founders Jesse McKinney, Amanda Moore and Genie Reese is a social selling beauty company that broke even in six weeks and has continued to grow quickly by empowering women. As you read on, the entrepreneurial spirit is well shared throughout the pages of GB! Tia Markland-Crabtree 10

SPOTLIGHT

on Boise Female Entrepreneurs Boise-based Businesses Bring Innovation and National Success to the Valley BY LYNN CANNING PHOTOGRAPHY KIMBERLEE MILLER

Liza Roeser-Atwood, a trail-blazer in the global floral industry with her company, FiftyFlowers, headquartered in Boise.

14

FIFTYFLOWERS A born entrepreneur, Liza Roeser-Atwood was selling Avon door-todoor at age 9. When she noted that perfume was a top seller, she was inspired to grab bunches of flowers in the neighborhood to make her own scents. This early experience foreshadowed her talents and eventual success in being a trail-blazer in the global floral industry with her company, FiftyFlowers, headquartered in Boise.

After graduating from college, Liza signed up for a 2-year commitment in the Peace Corps, serving in Latin America. Despite the inherent struggles of living in a 3rd world country, she loved the cultural experience and made the decision to remain in Ecuador where she got a job working at a rose plant in the renowned fertile valley of Cotopaxi.

She dedicated herself to learning all there was to know about the flower industry. Her title was “sales and marketing but she did not limit herself to that function. Instead she unleashed her natural curiosity and drive, eventually becoming an expert and developing a vision for new ways to sell flowers direct to customers.

15

She created her first business in 1998, Farm Exports, which focused on wholesale customers. Five years later Liza launched FiftyFlowers which innovated by

creating new channels of distribution and delivering farm-fresh flowers direct to consumers’ front

doors. Intended primarily for DIY arrangements, a

large portion of their business services brides who take on the floral arranging themselves.

FiftyFlowers has 50+ employees with their headquarters in Boise and offices/operations in Ecuador.

Being online based, Liza and her husband/business partner, Blu Atwood, could have chosen to run their

business anywhere in the world. They chose Boise because they fell in love with the outdoors and the community and felt it was the perfect location to raise their family and expand the business.

Liza’s journey is inspirational. She graduated from

college not with a degree in business but with the

drive and talent to discover opportunity and apply

new ways of thinking. Believing in herself, she proceeded with a motto, “just keep doing” and “follow

that shining star.” Additionally, she advises aspiring entrepreneurs to hire smart people and build a

team and culture that support and represent your business.

In Liza’s case, she devoted her talents to building a global flower business, hitching her star to a prod-

uct that is beautiful and universally beloved for the important role it plays in our lives and the making of memories. Fiftyflowers.com, @Fiftyflowers

SAALT Cherie Hoeger and Amber Fawson's start-up, Saalt, has woken up an established,

self-conscious category with a very modern directness. They have reinvigorated a product that is relevant to more than half the population, yet generally does not make it into mainstream conversation. Saalt is a period care company that manufactures a sustainable solution, a reusable menstrual cup.

It was during a conversation with her aunt in Venezuela that Cherie heard her

relatives had gone months without period care products. A mother of 5, Cherie thought of her own family and our society's reliance on disposable products. This

revelation sparked objectives that led to the creation of Saalt: The need to provide

a reusable product that was superior to what was currently available, married with a charitable goal to make the product available globally to women in need.

16

As they approached their new business, they recognized it was critical

to develop an innovative marketing strategy that would take this product mainstream and communicate

with customers via a candid and unabashed dialogue about period care.

To connect with customers, marketing

communications are supported by a

fun and approachable voice, one that is well-informed and as trustworthy as "your best friend's big sister." They created Facebook forums to share prod-

uct news and operate as virtual focus

groups so women could learn about the product and speak openly about their periods.

The team designed a product that was superior to competitive cups

and offered benefits vs. other solutions. Beautiful packaging was also

a priority, and they diverged from the stereotypical colors and icons found currently on store shelves and instead present their product with imagery

that is distinctive to their brand: beautiful, natural and modern.

Both women had small business suc-

cess before partnering to create Saalt, and they love the business community in Boise. Amber adds, “There is a

thriving and energetic entrepreneurial buzz in the valley, and we are forever

amazed at how accessible community leaders and business leaders are.”

They also appreciate the availability

of talent, when sourcing employees

and other partners.

February marked Saalt’s 1st year anniversary and they have achieved an

impressive number of goals. Customers have embraced their frank period talk, retailers have responded with goal-breaking orders, they have

expanded into the UK and Australia. Cherie and Amber can also be grat-

ified by the social good they are spreading, having donated over 2,500

cups globally to women in need, providing a sustainable solution and seriously improving quality of life. Saaltco.com, @saaltco

RED ASPEN The women Entrepreneurs who started the social selling beauty company, Red Aspen,

had impeccable timing with the October 2017 launch of their luxe false lashes. Lashes were on-trend and their fun, playful packaging and girl-empowering messaging at-

tracted Brand Ambassadors and customers alike. Red Aspen saw enviable success for a start-up. They broke even in the first 6 weeks, made the decision to reinvest in the company, and then worked even harder.

Led by co-founders Jesse McKinney, Amanda Moore and Genie Reese, they have since expanded their product line to include 70 SKU’s that include an array of beauty products

in addition to their lovely lashes. Their business model combines e-commerce, social networks and social selling by their passionate Brand Ambassadors.

A driving force of the company is their allegiance to their mission statement: “Inspire

women to stand up, stand out, and stand together by uniting passion with purpose.” That sentiment is integrated into their work day and infused in their products and marketing.

Every single product is named after a real woman, women whose stories’ inspire the

Founders and their customers. Their packaging is meant to delight, and with an average 5,000 orders a month, they ship same-day, wrapped in pink bubble wrap, with confetti and fun messages consistent with the brand’s personality.

They believe Boise was the perfect market to launch their business. Here they have ac-

cess to a talented workforce and a favorable cost-of-living that benefited the founders in the early, lean days when they were pouring their savings into building the business.

The trio began the venture very well prepared with a detailed business plan, defined objectives/strategies and various skills and areas of expertise. Despite their preparation,

launching the business was still like “jumping off a cliff,” with the need to be adaptable, learn new skills and generally figure it out as you go. Jesse McKinney gave insight into

the process, “There are things you do intentionally, and there are things that just happen by chance, with an element of luck.”

A key driver of Red Aspen’s success lies in their devotion to their mission statement and

the culture they have created, one that is reflected in their marketing, products and family of Brand Ambassadors. Their vision and intention was clear from the onset, and

reflected in the company name, the Aspen tree…a tree that never exists alone, growing

together as a group, connected by deep, entwined roots that nourish and enable all to flourish. Redaspenlove.com, @redaspenlove

Tired of the Traditional Taco? Madre Boutique Taqueria serves up one-of-a-kind tacos in the Lusk District BY VERONICA LEMASTER PHOTOGRAPHY KIMBERLEE MILLER

If you’re a taco lover looking for something new, fresh, edgy and unique, Madre Boutique Taqueria is your new favorite lunch spot. Opened in the Lusk District last April, Madre offers edgy comfort food that you can’t find elsewhere in the Treasure Valley. “They’re different, and more unique then any taco that’s being done right now,” owners John and Julie Cuevas said. “They’re delicious.” The Cuevas moved to Boise from California two years ago after visiting. The two instantly fell in love and realized that it would be the perfect place to open their own restaurant. “It was time for a change,” John explained. At the time, the duo noticed that Boise was an untapped market in the taco industry, and wanted to change that. After being in the food industry for twenty-years, John, a chef that has

worked at multiple five-star restaurants, and Julie who worked twenty-years as Food and Beverage Director for a five-star hotel, decided it was time to do it on their own. John, a classically trained French chef at the Culinary Institute of America in Scottsdale, Arizona and nominated for a James Beard Award, created the menu with uniqueness in mind. The la carte menu consists of different tacos priced between $4.50-$6. The tacos are more substantial than a street taco, but has you wanting to try two or three at a time. Tacos range from a chicken tinga taco that is filled with avocado, chipotle, pickled onion and fresh cheese to a pineapple al pastor taco that has pineapples, sauce mojo, rajas, avocado and blue cheese. You can also try the Idaho taco, an Idaho potato and chorizo filled tortilla with tomato mojo and jalapeno pesto. For those not in the taco mood, Madres offers options such as a fish sandwich that is blackened fish, wild arugula, shaved cucumber, roasted tomatoes, Haas avocado, paprika and jalapeno aioli or the chicken tinga salad which includes baby greens, beans, rice, pickled onion, fresh cheese, corn and cilantro vinaigrette. The taqueria offers eleven regional beers, six different wines by the glass, and Tractor Soda’s from Coeur d’Alene. The taco menu changes often with chef specials running daily, in the hopes of getting people out of their comfort zone and trying different foods between a tortilla. The Cuevas not only believe in great food, but also great service when you step into their restaurant. “I don’t know of another field where you get that instant gratification of the look on people’s faces when we bring the food out to them and you can just tell their so excited for what their about to eat,” Julie said. About once a month the tacos get a night off as Madre hosts a pop up where they pair with another local company to create a six-course fine dining menu. The next pop up is April 28th. With their opening anniversary around the corner, the two have big plans of opening one or two more restaurants in the future, along with a catering company. For more information, visit madrerestaurant.net.

With “Here’s to Mothers, Warm Kitchens, and Full Bellies” painted on their wall, Madre will have you feeling as if your eating in the Cuevas kitchen, nourished and loved.

Unleashed Fur IMMORTALIZING LOVE BY REBECCA EVANS

PHOTOGRAPHY NETTE SHAFF

M

ortality isn’t something we like to think about, yet it is something we all must face. If you’ve experienced the loss of a loved one, you’ll relate to the longing many endure. That need for connection. Pictures and photo-albums can help us through the grieving process, pulling in fond memories, treasured reminders of those who are now gone. Enter Nette (pronounced “Net”) Shaff, who captures images of seniors. And not just any image. She’s a “character” photographer, shooting photos in an organic way. At the perfect moment, she showcases the personality of her client in action. This is not an easy task; immortalizing the heart of another for all of time. Nette doesn’t photograph your average senior either. She captures your aging pet. Her career path began, like many, as a personal hobby, when she adopted two chihuahuas. Chuie, a chihuahua-mix and, Hercules, a five-pounder. Both inspired her during her college years to snap shots of them using her digital camera. Her business didn’t begin with portraits, but instead, in stock photography. Hercules was (and still is) a popular image in the world, a chihuahua with his tongue dangling, missing many of his front teeth. “In fact, I just saw Hercules on a Valentine’s Day card,” Nette says. “He’s still all over the world, even though he is no longer with me.” And that is the essence of her work; immortalizing our much-loved pets. As her own pets aged, she realized, “they won’t be here forever,” and the power of their images helped ease her grief when both of her dogs passed within three days of one another. This influenced Nette to launch Paw It Forward, photo-shooting senior pets for free and, if owners wanted to pay, she’d ask instead they donate to their favorite rescue organization.

24

pc: kimberlee miller

25

From there, Unleashed Fur, LLC, emerged, a place pet-owners could celebrate their beloved companions. Nette seizes a moment, usually one of joy or silliness, and owners leave with the character-memory of their pet created for all of time. Think of her service as a time capsule for someone’s heart. There exists a time of grace, where bodies move from youthful vibrance into fragility. Life is special. Death is difficult. In that moment between, there’s a realization that, as death nears, life becomes even more precious. Many of Nette’s clients discover their pet has a terminal illness, their days are numbered, and they have to let go. Nette’s approach is not a typical “portrait sitting” or “posing.” Her background in stock photography offers a unique experience, allowing the animal’s personality to shine through. Her creative approach allows the pet to be himself, move around, get comfortable. She offers both indoor studio shots along with outdoor location shoots, which is limitless and timeless thanks to the beauty of Idaho. Our pets remind us of unconditional love, often bringing out the best in us. As we witness their loss in health, they soon reflect our own aging, reminding us to remain courageous and calm. Nette’s magic commemorates the essence of this love, this exchange, and it is a gift that can help fill the void once a pet moves on. ¢

SMELLS OF IDAHO Locally Made Candles Bring Scents of Popular Idaho Locations to Homes BY VERONICA LEMASTER PHOTOGRAPHY KIMBERLEE MILLER

30

There’s nothing like a fragrance that brings back doting memories, and that’s exactly what two Idaho locals intended to do. Eryn Mayer and Deseree Garcia met 16 years ago while doing hair at Graeber & Company. Mayer left to open her own salon, Bristle & Crown located on the bench. Feeling inspired, and looking for more retail to sell at her salon, Mayer turned to her kitchen and online tutorials to teach herself the art of making candles. She began selling her own line of candles under the same name. Garcia, who also left Graeber & Company to open her own salon, Collective Concept, was marketing a separate brand of candles when she saw Mayer’s homemade candles flying off shelves. “I would get them at Collective Concepts, and they would be gone that day,” Garcia said. She decided to partner up with Mayer and had the idea of starting their own candle company, creating Idaho Candle Company. As they got busier with the candle company, one knew she had to step away from owning her own salon. Mayer decided to work at Collective Concepts with Garcia, and sold Bristle & Crown. The two friends decided to have each candle represent a time and place in Idaho by mixing certain fragrances together that every Idahoan would be familiar with. “Sometimes it starts out with the name of the candle, such as where in Idaho we feel like representing, then we talk about what that would smell like,” Garcia explained. “Or sometimes it starts the other way, where we order samples of oils, love it, and decide where it would be.” After the fragrance is tested and left for a period of time, the wax process begins. The candles are made from 100% soy wax that is hand poured. At first, they would the melt wax on stove tops which would take two days to make a small batch. Nowadays, they can produce over 100 candles in a day by using wax melters. This has allowed them to sell to retailers around Idaho such as Independent Goods in Ketchum, Flying M in Caldwell, and The Brass Monkey in Twin Falls.

Each candle comes bottled in a glass jar that features a stamp of the location and a special story. In their Signature Series you can find 1939 Ketchum, 1984 Grove Street, 1952 Harrison Blvd, 1980 Warm Springs Ave, 1944 Eden and 1863 Owyhee, each with a story of an event that happened in the year. “It’s our love affair of Idaho,” Mayer explained. Fragrances range from woody and smoky to flowery and sweet, as if you were traveling through Idaho all in a day. Go from Harrison Blvd. that has garden rose, amber, vetiver and sandalwood to 1976 McCall with Ponderosa pine, burning copal, and sweet wood smoke. Their signature staples will always be on shelves with six seasonal fragrances rolling out every season. Their next Spring collection will roll out March 1. Only about nine months old, Idaho Candle Company has people nationwide falling in love with the unique scents. As for the future, they plan on representing more locations in Idaho with the help of community members. Plan on seeing more Idaho Candle Company candles on shelves also, and possibly even a retail store. ¢ For more information, visit Idahocandles.com.

REENVISIONING RELICS Virgo Darling Pairs New Design With Aged Apparel BY RYON MORRIN

PHOTOGRAPHY KAREN KRUM

Kelsie Fields grew up in the small town of Buhl, ID, where she discovered her true passion: apparel. As a teen, she was digging through her grandmother’s collection of jewelry, discovering relics of the past and repurposing them as modern accessories. At the young age of 15, Fields had a photo feature in a hometown newspaper sporting her vintage treasures. Reenvisioning styles from previous eras is her specialty, and she has also drawn inspiration from her time abroad. Just a few years ago, Fields decided to take her natural gift and harness it to start her very own online apparel shop, Virgo Darling. Initially, her business consisted of a self-managed website and various pop-up shop appearances at local favorites like Treefort Music Festival and West Elm. However, an opportunity arose when one half of the cottage she resides in became vacant. No longer occupied, Fields jumped on the newly-available space with the intent of turning it into her own boutique. After months of work, Fields had transformed the former living space into a thoughtfully-designed curated studio.

32

The response was tremendous; Fields never expected the sheer number of people who showed up at her storefront. The success she has experienced quickly lead her to setting regular business hours in combination with running a webstore, making her vintage selections available to all. Virgo Darling is about more than just fashion; Fields has a vision for sustainable apparel shopping through upcycling old pieces that deserve new life. In addition, she sources new clothing and jewelry from a number of Treasure Valley creators as well as other vendors around the nation. Fields crafts her own Jewelry line, too. Virgo Creations, which can be found on her site, is a line of unique, one-of-a-kind pieces made by hand. Each one has an origin story which tells the reader how she came to possess the stunning crystals as well as the healing properties they possess.

More is coming to the store in the near future. By Spring, Fields is planning to open the full kitchen of the cottage as a part of the shop. She envisions the full shop being a beautiful and inspirational space holding not only products, but events for the community. The ever-expanding business will feature a home goods section as well as a “little darlings” selection for babies and children. Despite expanding her offerings, Fields continues to strive for a personal brand and shop that cuts down on waste. She truly wants to make an impact on our community and environment while embracing creative fashions and arts. Vintage clothing contains a story that Fields states, “lived far beyond our walls.” Wearing a piece of history is no small matter, and neither is adding to its timeline. ¢

ON THE TRAIL

NOAH WILLSONAMERICAN NINJA WARRIOR JUNIOR A Ninja Among us, on the Rise to Fame BY ELLE PARKER PHOTOGRAPHY KIMBERLEE MILLER

Everyone has had that moment when they’re watching someone incredibly talented on TV, whether they’re singing, dancing, or doing an obstacle course, that makes you stop and think: “Wow, I wish I could do that!” What so often seems a distant, unobtainable dream has become reality for Boise’s own 12-year-old Noah Willson, a competitor on American Ninja Warrior Junior. From the looks of it, Noah Willson is just your normal sixth-grade boy. Even from the way he speaks so humble of himself, you’d never be able to tell that he’s the Treasure Valley’s most talented and esteemed young ninja. Since the age of 9, Noah Willson was always an avid fan of American Ninja Warrior. Always being a driven athlete and student, Willson decided his goal was to make it onto the show. For his 10th birthday, his family built him a “salmon ladder” to practice on; this obstacle requires intense upper-body strength and is one of the infamously difficult parts of a typical ninja course. Over the past 2 years, the Willson family has built and kept a variety of obstacles that

34

were created for him. After waiting for what seemed like forever since sending his audition video in, the producers informed the young ninja that he’d have the opportunity to participate on the show, a real life dream come true. American Ninja Warrior Junior is exclusively for kids between the ages of 9 and 14, and the original show was initially only open to those 21 and older. Recently, the regulations have been altered. The minimum age requirement is 19, and Noah couldn’t be more excited to compete sooner than expected. He already trains alongside adults in Boise at Camp Rhino, a training facility that employs James Gomez, local ninja celebrity. Brenda Willson, Noah’s mother, couldn’t help but gush about her son’s outstanding character and perseverance throughout the interview. “He’s so competitive but he cheers for everyone-” she told me. “-and when he sees that someone needs help, he helps them.” Not only is he supportive of his friends, but he pushes himself, too. Noah spends upwards of two hours practicing daily, and takes any free moment to perfect his skills. You’ll find him training nearly anytime he’s not at school. “The comradery and friendships are amazing,” Brenda Willson said. Noah affirmed this: “We’re really encouraging to each other.” The

teen also shared with me that he is a part of several massive ninja group chats; they have daily competitions to keep each other committed to their sport. These challenges are meant to heighten the competition-for example, how many reps they can do on a particular obstacle in 30 seconds. Noah stayed humble, but his skills are far more developed than most of the ninjas his age. He’s even popular among adult participants. On one obstacle, Noah even helped an adult ninja by showing him his personal technique, which is just one of many grand feats of this Boise teen. Brenda Willson laughed, saying: “All the adult ninjas wanted to take pictures with him at the Regional National Ninja League qualifier hosted by the Movement Lab in San Dimas, California. Noah has recently learned how to make it his own and channel his stress into skill for competitions. This twelve-year-old will soon be partaking in a major competition in Connecticut that will be livestreamed. After watching a handful of videos from the past few months, Noah’s improvements are obvious, and his mother agrees. It’s incredible to think of where he’ll be in a year! “Maybe one day you can interview him when he’s on American Ninja Warrior!” Brenda Willson told me. I hope she’s right.¢

LED BOISE

Lighting up the City with their Art BY LYNN CANNING PHOTOGRAPHY STEVE SMITH

Lauren Edson loves to make things, and as co-founder of LED Boise, that is her job-description. Lauren is Artistic Director/Choreographer/Dancer and together with her collaborators, they combine contemporary dance, original music and film to create their innovative brand of performance art. Their recent project is a large scale dance performance, “Jabberwock,” which premiered March 2nd at the Morrison Center. It is a modern interpretation of the Lewis Carroll poem that features a cast of world-class dancers, a global sensibility, and includes original music by Lauren’s musician/composer husband, Andrew Stensaas. Growing up in Boise, Lauren was put into dance class at age 3 as an outlet for self-expression. A natural and gifted dancer, she trained at the North Carolina School of the Arts and The Julliard School. Later returning to Boise as an adult, she made the decision to remain in Idaho, “I love the people and the ability to contribute to the cultural landscape 36

while simultaneously taking in so much goodness.” Lauren and Andrew founded LED as a non-profit in 2015 after the birth of their f irst child, and committed themselves to full time artistic collaboration. In addition to dance and music, they had a vision to create cinematic theatrical experiences, and they recruited f ilmmaker Kyle Morck to join as the 3rd partner. They are completing the construction of a new studio space in downtown Boise on Grove Street which will serve as an incubator for new projects and a home base to share with the community. Once completed, they are eager to invite the audience to experience all their creative projects including live dance/music performances, f ilm screenings, intimate gatherings and visiting artists. Their art is inclusive and accessible, and Lauren stresses, “I would love audiences to

know that whatever they think or feel is exactly right. I want to create the space for people to enter into the work in their own way.” In addition to the large scale dance performances, they share their art via film and created a weekly video series, “Interesting Failures.” This medium provides limitless opportunity to create and explore new ways of expression and entertainment. In producing the videos, they often leave their studio and literally take their art into the streets of downtown Boise, integrating and filming their performers throughout the city. Recent videos featured a Jabberwock cast member dancing down the aisle of The Record Exchange, and another highlighted a performer zipping around on a scooter on the streets surrounding Boise State. The LED collaborators have no interest in being comfortable. They are always creating and searching for new ways to put their art out in the world. Andrew adds, “We aren’t doing it for fame, we aren’t doing it for fortune…we just want to make things”. We are fortunate that LED has made downtown Boise their home base. We have the opportunity to experience LED’s innovative art whether up close in their new space, at an on-stage performance or perhaps by chance while enjoying a latte at the neighborhood Ledboise.com, @ledboise coffee shop. ¢

IDAHO’S “BACKROADS BOSS LADY” Cheekys Founder & CEO Jessi Roberts BY CAITLIN COPPLE MASINGILL

PHOTOGRAPHY KIMBERLEE MILLER

Jessi Roberts doesn’t have the luxury of failure. She started Cheekys, the New Plymouth-based Western lifestyle ecommerce, retail, and wholesale company, in 2011 as a hard-working mom with $7,000 in life savings and a prayer. Her family of six and husband who had been injured on the job needed her support – and fast. “It was time to hustle. I needed to make some money,” Jessi said. A former Outback waitress and used-car saleswoman, Jessi was no stranger to hard work, and it shows. This year, Cheekys became one of 14 Idaho companies (and the only one led by a woman) to make the Inc. Magazine 500 list for rapid growth. Cheekys products are available in over 3,500 boutiques, including several in Idaho, as well as online at cheekysboutique.com. Jessi’s first book, Backroads Boss Lady: Happiness Ain’t a Side Hustle, comes out March 5 with a major New York publisher. The hybrid memoir and small business book has been endorsed by the likes of Lee Woodruff and The Myth of the Nice Girl author Fran Hauser, and led to interviews in Real Simple Magazine, Forbes, and Marketplace. Closer to home, the Idaho Business Review named Jessi among 2019’s Idaho Women of the Year – she figures she’ll have to buy a dress for the gala. The night before, on March 5, she will hold her first reading Boise’s Barnes & Noble. Despite the success, Jessi is working harder than ever from her bustling office in Downtown New Plymouth, population 1,538. She goes live on Facebook each day, reaching more than 2 million women a week through the platform, personally mentoring hundreds of aspiring or novice boutique owners. It’s still all about Cheekys sales, even with more than $500,000 coming in each month, Jessi says. At the big fashion shows she attends several times a year, Jessi sets up her own booth and merchandise and then helps take it all down, sweating beside her staff and husband. She buys all the samples after a show, figuring if they don’t sell through Cheekys, she’ll sell them at a yard sale if she has to. That ethos, as well as a deep understanding of her customer, is what drives sales. “Jessi not only created a million-dollar company, but she created, a die-hard, sisterhood of chicks that continues to grow,” said Erika Mata, Cheekys’ sales manager. Jessi thrives on the pace and finds inspiration in the community she’s created of fellow rural entrepreneurs. Business ownership has meant more time with her family and a better future for her kids, who often work alongside their mom, dad, and grandpa in one of the many buildings Jessi has purchased in Downtown New Plymouth. Jessi’s own childhood, much of it detailed in her book, was a struggle, and home was rarely a safe place to be. She’s determined not to let her past define her, but also not to run away from her roots, which is why she’s relentlessly authentic in telling her story. “My dream life is really to have an in-ground pool,” she laughs. “I already have an above-ground pool. I want to make a change in my community, I want my little girl to have a better place to grow up than I did.”. ¢

ARTIST RENDERING OF IDEAS FOR THE FUTURE. PROVIDED BY CTA ARCHITECTS ENGINEERS

NEW LOCATION FOR AN ICONIC BOISE TRADITION Boise Farmers Market BY JANELLE STEAR PHOTOGRAPHY KIMBERLEE MILLER

40

Annually from April through December, “the Boise Farmers Market focuses on local food, cultivating new farmers, incubating new food ideas, and creating a community space to learn about food and sustainability,” (theboisefarmersmarket. com). The Boise Farmers Market (BFM) will soon be opening at a new, location. The BFM Board has collaborated with local businesses, River Shore Development, and CTA Architects Engineers, to ensure the Market’s future. In the heart of Boise’s new urban development district at the corner of River Street and Americana Boulevard, the new space will feature the Boise Farmers Market on Saturdays starting April 6.

ROOTS

“The Boise Farmers Market is a vital, integral part of the face of Boise,” says the BFM Building Committee Project Manager Kristi Preston. “We are excited the new Market location will allow us to continue to grow and include more farmers and vendors…. It is very important to us to maintain that vibrancy and sense of community that is the Boise Farmers Market.” Janie Burns, from local Meadowlark Farm, has sold lamb and eggs at the Boise Farmers Market since it began in 2013. She also serves on the BFM Board, and adds, “BFM is food centric. We focus on the FARMERS part of the Farmers Market.” Megan Rebholtz, with River Shore Development, exclaims her office is excited to share their outdoor space with the BFM: “We love the connectivity of the location, as it’s adjacent to popular roadways, the Greenbelt, and parks. We are also excited by the opportunity to activate the neighborhood alongside the Farmers Market and to do so in a way that

celebrates food, innovation, diversity and the community.” Tamara Cameron, BFM Interim Market Manager, highlights the educational aspect, saying they will have room to offer chef demos, and classes for kids and adults. Stemming from a seven-year relationship with Danielle Hurd and BFM, and employees who are passionate about the organization’s mission, the team at CTA Architects Engineers was tapped to help BFM and River Shore Development envision what this vibrant community space could look like. Led by CTA’s Nicole Dovell-Moore, architect, Maria Chavez, lead designer, and Lisa Guerrero, graphic designer, the project focuses on evolving BFM’s identity with unique characteristics that link the goals of the Market with the heritage of the new location. The CTA team first and foremost took the time to understand the aspirations and needs of both BFM and River Shore Development, as well as to study the context and mobility of the neighborhood. Capitalizing on their diverse

expertise, CTA brought together in-house experts in retail thought leadership, branding, wayfinding, graphics, and place making for a “creative download” that included options for the site plan, logos, and signage. Eventually BFM would like to have a structure on the new site. For now, BFM, CTA, and River Shore Development are enthusiastic in their partnerships for improving the Market. Nicole, Maria, and Lisa agree: “We see this new location for the [Farmers] Market as a social experience.... A chance for creating a community gathering place that is flexible and can be used for a variety of purposes at different times of year, enhancing the area as it is, but bringing something all new.” ¢ Visit www.theBoiseFarmersMarket.com, www.RiverShoreDevelopment.com, or www. ctagroup.com to learn more about each of these organizations.

FREESTYLE

MASTER PHOTOGRAPHER WITH AN AMBASSADOR HEART Providing Care Through Education BY JANELLE STEAR

PHOTOGRAPHY MICHAEL BONOCORE

For over a decade, Michael Bonocore, a full-time travel photographer, has been traveling the world finding off the beaten path scenes and experiences while capturing timeless moments with his camera. Michael’s photos make you feel like you are there with him, living in the moment, whether it be a vivid landscape over Patagonia’s famous Mt. Fitz Roy or documenting the culture of Cuba while on a thirty-day road trip across the island country. Born in Philadelphia, Michael moved from the east coast to the west coast before finally settling his nomadic bones in Boise. Through it all, his two passions in life, storytelling through travel photography and working with youth in need around the world, has never changed. Michael moved to Idaho in 2016 and shared with us that, no matter the places he gets to experience, Idaho will always be home to him. That is quite the statement since his adventures include photographing wild gorillas up close in the jungles of Uganda, seeing the Big 5 game animals in Tanzania and Namibia, riding a camel through a massive sandstorm in Morocco's Sahara Des42

ert and swimming with sharks in Tahiti. Other countries whose stamps line his passport include iconic locations such as Iceland, Cuba, Jordan, Patagonia, Peru, Norway, Australia, India, and countless others to total almost forty in his life. With six years of experience leading international photography workshops, Michael teaches people the art of photography right in his own backyard through his business, Idaho Photo Workshops. Michael also serves as the Editor-in-Chief for his online travel magazine, Resource Travel. Michael’s passion for travel and photography intersect in his commitment to the global initiative to end the cycle of poverty, youth crime, and school dropouts in over 12 countries. He leads photography workshops for The Giving Lens, where his team works with local nonprofits to provide photography education and hands-on experience programs for teens. In models similar to other photography workshop companies, The Giving Lens sends Michael and a co-leader overseas with 6-12 photographers, where they partner with an existing non-profit organization in the local community. The af-

ter-school program of the NGO usually selects up to 20 students, who have to be excelling in both their grades and attendance in school, to participate in the photography adventure. Each center offers teens different activities, such as dance, art, and photography. Michael and his team will take the photography students out on field trips to help them unleash their creativity through a camera lens. Michael shares two student success stories from Nicaragua: Armando, a successful photographer and graphic designer for the Nicaraguan Tourism Board, and Anielka, who was the first one in her family to go to college and is now a manager at a hotel in Granada. Along with them, countless other children across the world have developed real-life skills that come from the artistic creativity that these workshops provide. No matter how much Michael enjoys his travels and the people with whom he meets on his adventures, this world traveler appreciates nothing more than coming home to Boise and all the beauty and adventure that Idaho holds. ¢

IDAHO WILL ALWAYS BE HOME TO MICHAEL BONOCORE, THAT IS QUITE THE STATEMENT SINCE HIS ADVENTURES INCLUDE PHOTOGRAPHING WILD GORILLAS JUNGLES OF UGANDA, THE BIG 5 GAME ANIMALS IN TANZANIA AND NAMIBIA AND RIDING A CAMEL THROUGH A MASSIVE SANDSTORM IN MOROCCO'S SAHARA DESERT.

Follow Michael’s adventures on his Instagram at @MichaelBonocore and his Facebook page, Bonocore Visual Studios.

THE PASSION IS IN THE PRODUCT La De Da Jewelry BY KAYLI CORBIN PHOTOGRAPHY KIMBERLEE MILLER

A rainy day in a sleepy ocean town has a special sense of nostalgia for almost all of us. Wandering the shops and window browsing is accompanied by the soft roar of the ocean as mist fills the air. Angie Sebolt had recently sold her business and was getting some much-needed rest and recuperation in the form of a family vacation to the Oregon Coast. She stumbled into a quaint gallery and found her way to a back room. A large wooden box was filled with splashes of color and shapes. Beads of all variety ran through her fingers as she became hypnotized, searching for anything that caught her creative eye. As she searched, the shop owner started a conversation that quickly progressed into a discussion of the fu46

ture and what it would hold for this recently open entrepreneur. Each day of her two-week vacation was spent sharing stories, experience, and tools with the owner of this shop. When it was time to head home, Angie had gained more than a new friend. She had grown a passion for what would develop into an incredibly successful business venture and something that truly brings her joy. La De Da jewelry started in the shop that day and has now been a staple at the Capital City Public Market for 20 years. Angie has a studio in Garden City, in the rapidly developing Live-Work-Create District. She prides herself on high-quality and unique products with a

specialty for customer service. She strives to thrill each and every one of her customers with delightful experience from picking product to meeting the artist. When La De Da began to make its way to the mainstage of Boise creativity, beading became all the rage. Bead shops were popping up on every corner. Angie shares, “Now I have many friends that are jewelry designers, and many have come to me for advice, which I happily share. We are all unique in our approach to design and my belief is ’There is plenty to go around for all of us!” No need to be nasty or competitive! I have come to love helping other women find their dreams and to follow their passion, just as my Oregon Coast Angel had done for me!” Four years ago, Angie met the love of her life, Matt. He showed interest in her design and began crafting his own line of beautiful leather totes and bags. Together they renovate vintage trailers and channel their collaborative creative expression into their remodels. Their passion for aesthetic and crafting beautiful things made it easy to know this was what they were meant to do. The pair continues to explore new mediums of creative expression and have more projects on the horizon. La De Da Jewelry is the embodiment of “do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life”. Her passion and creative ability pair to highlight some of the most unique hand-crafted jewelry Boise has to offer. ¢ Shop their amazing selection at la-de-dajewelry.com

HANDMADE GIFTS WITH A CAUSE Redesigned Wool into Creative Pieces BY ERIKA HEEREN

PHOTOGRAPHY KIMBERLEE MILLER

What started as a creative outlet for Sage Woolens owner Jeanna Wigger has become an opportunity to increase awareness about livestock welfare and the benefits of repurposing. Sage Woolens is a Boise-based handmade gifts store. The business is dedicated to giving a longer life to high-quality second-hand materials and turning them into something fresh and new. For Wigger, the practice of repurposing is a personal choice. Wigger took steps in her daily life to incorporate the principles of minimizing waste. She even committed to only buying second-hand clothing for an entire year – but she wanted to do more. While working full time as a speech pathologist, Wigger opened Sage Woolens as an outlet to explore her creativity and to address an important issue in the textile industry. “There is so much waste in the garment industry, and I wanted to start taking steps to reduce my consumption of new materials that contribute to that waste and be a more mindful consumer,” Wigger explains. When developing her products, Wigger pulls inspiration from her background raising sheep and llamas with her family in Alaska. An active 4-H participant as a child, wool quickly became her favorite medium for her creations. “I’ve always been drawn to natural fibers… [but], I don’t just use the fiber, I use the hardware too – like the buckles and vintage zippers and elements from the original items to integrate that in interesting ways into my products.” Wigger’s background also encouraged her desire to raise awareness about animal welfare 48

issues prevalent in the industry – specifically regarding wool-bearing animals. Sage Woolens partners with RescEwe, a local nonprofit dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of abused and neglected sheep. A portion of all sales from Sage Woolens is donated to RescEwe. Last year, the annual donation from the sale of her products provided enough money to cover more than half of RescEwe’s winter hay needs. You can find Sage Woolens products online, at various craft markets, and at Idaho Made - a local artist cooperative gift shop in downtown Boise. Community favorite items currently on sale at Sage Woolens include wool cozies and her unique “Idaho” shaped bags. Shoppers can also find one-of-a-kind gifts like wristlets and greeting cards. You can also commission custom projects to fit any occasion. A new addition to the Sage Woolens product line are hand-crafted fabric collages. For the sheep themed collages, 100% of the proceeds are donated directly to RescEwe. For Wigger, it’s the art in her practice that keeps the ideas for her business going. “The concept of creative constraint plays a significant role in my business. When I chose to use high quality repurposed wool textiles as my primary material to make handbags, I hadn't even scratched the surface of the creative possibilities…I have had no shortage of ideas to pursue, all within the constraints of making art from repurposed textiles.” What’s next for Jeanna Wigger and Sage Woolens? She wants to use the business platform connect with other people in the community.

BEFORE “I really like teaching, and I’m working towards being able to do workshops to share skills and information about reusing materials, minimizing waste within the context of learning useful sewing skills.” ¢ For more information about Sage Woolens and RescEwe, please visit www.sagewoolens.com.

LOCALLY MANUFACTURED FIRE TABLES “We like ours so much, we are buying another for a friend!” “We use ours more often than we ever thought we would!” These are common testimonials from people who own an IMPACT Fire Table designed by the creative team at Impact Imports and manufactured in the USA. After several years of making custom steel fire tables here in Boise, Impact Imports developed standard designs to help maintain product quality and increase availability. The company offers powder coated steel models as well as fully stainless steel models which are hand brushed and powder coated clear for a finish similar to that of a car. The fire ‘floats’ above the table top and the design of the firebox prevents the table surface from getting hot. Glass wind guards, polyester covers, firebox covers and other accessories are available. Beginning spring 2019, Impact Imports will be offering a new design of theirs: Natural Stone Gas Fire Pits hand crafted from a single piece of stone, and they will be the only natural stone fire pit on the market. See them burning at Impact Imports, 552 E Amity Road, in SE Boise. Open Friday and Saturday 10-5, Sunday 12-5, or call for appointment: 208.368.0300 impactimportsusa.com

TRAIL BLAZER

SAWTOOTH MASTERS SWIM CLUB Promoting the Joy of Swimming BY LYNN CANNING PHOTOGRAPHY KIMBERLEE MILLER

The Downtown YMCA opened its’ doors more than a half century ago and today remains a beloved landmark and valued part of life for many in Boise. Jeff Erwin grew up swimming in that pool (Boise High ’82) and continues to devote countless hours both as a coach to Boise High’s swim team and as a nationally ranked swimmer with decades of honors and victories in the pool. Jeff is a member of Boise’s adult swim program, Sawtooth Masters (SAWS), and his participation in the club motivates him and the team’s nearly 100 swimmers to keep on swimming and enjoying the benefits of the sport. Under the umbrella of the national organization, United States Masters Swimming (USMS), the local club offers community members an organized program that provides daily swim workouts with a certified swim coach on-deck. The coach customizes workouts, provides stroke instruction, feedback and most importantly, motivation to consistently get in the water to swim hard and achieve goals. Led by head YMCA coach, Rick McQuet, there is a stable of talented coaches who welcome swimmers of all ages and abilities. The swim lanes are organized by ability/speed and the coach assists members in finding a compatible lane. Each swimmer brings his/her own objectives to the pool, and coaches help build a strategy to accomplish those goals. There are many reasons swimmers join the team: health/fitness, rehabbing an injury, or social benefits. Others are interested in competing in triathlons, open-water or local/national swim meets. The team composition ranges from recreational swimmers to “fast lane” swimmers who are national or world champions. The team has many triathletes who join up to improve their skills in that leg of the race. Triathlete driven training can be lonely and jumping into a Masters’ swim practice can improve stroke efficiency and strength via drills and coaching. The group dynamics found in the lanes never fails to invigorate and challenge swimmers of all abilities, and Triathletes often see great improvement in their swimming. Members also benefit from sharing the pool with the elite of the swimming world. Coach McQuet is an accomplished swimmer/triathlete and a member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic water polo team. Other SAWS swimmers like Jeff Erwin continue to compete and win on the national stage. Members find it inspiring to train and compete alongside the team’s All-Stars, and benefit from their experience and words of wisdom. The overarching mission of SAWS is “Promoting the Joy of Swimming.” Swimmers come to the pool and join the team because of their love of 52

the sport and the benefits derived from belonging to a team. Inevitably swimmers find their “lane-mates” and a strong camaraderie develops which propels members to make practice even in the midst of busy daily life. As one swimmer put it, “Even if I am dead tired, I try to go because I never regret a good swim and I very much enjoy the company of the other swimmers.” A very common sentiment among members. SAWS welcomes swimmers in the community to show up on-deck, meet the coach, and try a practice. Whether you are new to the sport, a lapsed swimmer wanting to reconnect with the water, or currently train by yourself, there is a place on the team for you. Contact info@ sawtoothmasters.org if you are interested in learning more and joining SAWS for some free swims to try out the team. ¢ Check out sawtoothmasters.org or ymcatvidaho.org/program/usmasters-swimming-program for more information

DELTA DENTAL OF IDAHO PRESENTS TOOTH TRUTHS SM Floss like a Boss! BY HEATHER A. BROWN, RDH, MPH It’s amazing what goes on inside the human mouth and how it affects our overall health. There are 100s of different species of bacteria that call our mouths home. Often at the same time. What they can do to your teeth is the subject of another article, but let‘s just say it’s certainly not pretty, and not always beneficial. What to do about it? The constant, resounding answer shouted from the rooftops should be, Brush your teeth! Yes, brush your teeth, please and thank you. Be aware though, you’re cleaning about 60% of your teeth when you only brush. Not a big deal? Look at it this way, do you take advantage of a sale when something you want to buy is 40% off? Yes, because it’s a good deal and 40% is a lot, right? Leaving 40% of your teeth uncleaned is a lot, but in this case, it’s bad to take advantage of that. So what do we do to clean the parts of your teeth the brush can’t reach? You guessed it, floss. Flossing is more than pulling a string between your teeth. Flossing disrupts the rockin’ parties of bacteria that gather below the gum line where it’s dark and oxygen-free, it dislodges food particles bacteria thrive on, and keeps your gums healthy, helping you avoid gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease.

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?

Boise Escape BY CHELSEA CHAMBERS PHOTOGRAPHY KIMBERLEE MILLER

For most of us, the thought of being trapped in a room with no obvious means of escape would be mortifying. But now-a-days, this new form of recreation is as commonplace as mini-golf. Family outings, date night, business team-building, birthday parties… everyone is looking to get trapped. And for good reason. Studies are now showing that escape rooms help foster creativity, mental focus, and problem-solving abilities. While of course, deepening team-work and fine-tuning those motor skills. It’s become so much more than just being stuck—it’s a booming industry. Anik and Blake Furlow fell in love with the concept of an escape room while traveling. After returning to the Treasure Valley, they decided to take the leap and create one themselves. They’ve seen great success and various other escape rooms are popping up all over the Valley, modeling themselves after Boise Escape. The rapid growth of their company and the increase in competition requires the Boise Escape team to be constantly upping their game with new rooms, new experiences, and new ways to get locked in. Laura Coleman, Boise Escape Office Manager, shares with us what’s new with Boise Escape since we last heard from them, “Boise Escape has been building a rock star team of game operators over the past year and we've implemented a new game on-site called The Heist in May 2018. The Heist is an art gallery-themed escape room in which you have to enter the Wooded River 54

Gallery with your criminal cohorts to steal the most famous art piece in all of Idaho—the famous Idaho Golden Potato. The unique thing about The Heist is that the art in the room was created by local, Treasure Valley artists. We also launched the Boise Escape Book Club that you can follow on our social media pages. We feature a book every two months that is either a mystery, thriller, or choose your own adventure.” Boise Escape also now boasts their mobile escape room: Boise Escape on Wheels. Coleman explains, “The game is shorter than our on-site games and is a good introduction to the idea of an escape game. Boise Escape on Wheels can be rented out for parties, birthdays, family reunions, and company picnics. We added a spooky version of our regular game during Halloween that can be booked for any time. We are debuting a new, third option for Boise Escape on Wheels at Treefort Music Festival that is music-related.” The locally-owned company plans to increase their community engagement and aspires to host charity events in the near future. “With Boise Escape being locally owned, operated, and created, we really try to support our local small businesses in any way we can. We’re in this together!” says Coleman. Do you think you have what it takes? ¢ For more information about Boise Escape, booking, and their policies, visit them online at BoiseEscape.com, or give them a call at 208-375-7193.

BOISE MUSIC WEEK A Week of Fabulously Free Entertaining Concerts, Dance, and Theater BY JANELLE STEAR PHOTOGRAPHY PHIL WHITE

In 2018, Mayor Bieter declared, “Music Week programs have fostered a love of music among the people in our community… and have inspired many to make music a large part of their lives...” If you have not heard about Boise Music Week, then you must check it out this May 2-12. Boise Music Week, or BMW, is a week of different musical and theater events for all ages. “Boise Music Week exists to provide the city of Boise lots of free opportunities to hear different kinds of music, to see what is happening musically in our city, and to support local musicians and actors. There is a Church night, a school night; there is the musical at the Morrison Center, and other things... and it’s all free,” shares Michael Stear, local Music Teacher and long time BMW attendee. Then and Now Boise Music Week It all started back in May 1919, when Eugene A. Farner started a totally free, week-long, Broadway-esque musical celebration showcasing local talent in Boise. Now 101 years later, Boise Music Week continues to be a yearly tradition. Everlyerly Schumacher, retired Boise Schools Music Teacher and the 2019 BMW’s President, explains, “During Boise Music Week’s performances this year our patrons will continue to see a great lineup of talent… Behind the scenes, the Boise Music Week Board, which consists of experienced volunteers, is getting updated to make the second century carry on as strong as the first. The many committees it takes to put Music Week together are taking a good look at practices, procedures, and technology. My goal as President is to encourage each committee to be 58

good stewards in the use of local talent, volunteers’ time, and financial donations.” Why Should You Attend Boise Music Week? BMW will continue its traditional entertainment with a captivating mix of concerts and performances. To start the week BMW presents a Special Family Gala night at JUMP, in which a variety of musical performances where the public may wander and have dinner or refreshments; children may partake in music, dance, and drama activities. You will also be able to check out the displays and live representations of past BMW performances, as well as enjoy a formal piano concert given by one of Boise’s great musical treasures, Del Parkinson. Another new event this year will be Song of the Basque, a look back at the history of Idaho Basque families and their contributions to past BMW events. The week will end with the play, Thoroughly Modern Millie, “a look back in time to the culture, music, and dance of the era when Boise Music Week began” (Schumacher). Each event makes a great opportunity for either a family outing, a date night, or a night out with friends. How often do you get to go out to experience superb entertainment for free? Everlyerly Schumacher says, “Please come and join in the first season of the second century of Boise Music Week, May 2 – May 12, 2019. ¢ For more information and to see the complete schedule, check out BMW’s website at boisemusicweek.org.

HANDLE so their busy and on-the-go members could eat healthier with less stress. “That’s the biggest thing that sets us apart from other gyms – our community and sisterhood,” said Powers. “You can go to any gym and get exercise. But when you come here, you get people that smile at you when you come in, ask you your name, and if you’ve been in before. They show you around, and help you get weights and equipment for the workouts.” “Women come in initially because they feel like they need exercise or to be more active,” said Powers, “but they stay forever because of the friends they make here.” To allow everyone to experience Kaia FIT’s strong community, Kaia Fit offers a free week’s worth of classes to anyone who would like to experience Kaia FIT’s community for themselves. Better yet, everyone who signs up after the first free week gets their first month half-off. If you’re a teacher, military member, or run/ work for an Idaho local business, be sure to ask about that discount, too. ¢

KAIA FIT The Gym Designed With Women In Mind BY ANA LETE PHOTOGRAPHY KIMBERLEE MILLER

Walk in to Kaia FIT, and you’ll be welcomed by friendly staff members, an open exercise space covered in plush two-inch exercise mats, and other features designed with on-the-go moms and busy women in mind. “I bought Kaia FIT last April from the mother and daughter team that opened and ran it for the previous five years,” said Cari Powers, Kaia FIT’s current owner. Prior to taking on Kaia FIT, Powers ran a mobile personal training service to help women work out in their own homes. “I had all my workout equipment in my car and would go house to house to do one-on-one inhome workouts,” said powers. “One day, I got an email on LinkedIn that said, ‘I have a gym for women. I’m selling it and think you might be a good fit. Would you like to have a conversation about it?” Powers and the previous mother/daughter team did have a conversation, and according to Powers, “the more I learned about Kaia FIT, the more I knew I had to change my life and buy a gym, so that’s what happened!” Since taking over the business last April, Powers 60

moved Kaia FIT’s 75 members and 12 dedicated instructors into a brand-new 4,500 square-foot facility off of Cole and Ustick in the West Bench. When looking for the perfect space, Powers kept Kaia FIT members in mind. “The new location had to be within five miles of the old location to keep as many people as possible – we also had to have the right amount of space, parking, and lighting since we start our workouts at 5 am when it’s pitch-black outside. It took about six months to find the right space, but we finally found it, and here it is!” But even with Kaia FIT’s large open space, a dedicated yoga, barre, and dance room, and its two large shower/changing rooms, some aspects of Kaia FIT have not changed – its instructors and community. Kaia FIT’s 12 instructors are also certified personal trainers who ensure that everyone at Kaia FIT is supported and held accountable in every class. During Kaia FIT’s most recent BRIK program – a six-week bootcamp that focuses on health, nutrition, and exercise – Kaia FIT’s instructors started a soup exchange program
