DUTCH BROS. The Business of Relationships BY KAYLI CORBIN PHOTOGRAPH KIMBERLEE MILLER

s consumers, and more importantly as humans, we chose to invest time and money at the places that fuel us. Whether your desired fuel is caffeine, community involvement, or a next-level personal interaction, Dutch Bros. is here to provide you with just what you need. Brian Wight and his wife, Libby, have been sharing Dutch Bros. culture and adding fuel to the Treasure Valley since 2007. The Wight’s story begins at a Dutch Bros. in Bend, Oregon. They both started as baristas working to make ends meet and get through college. They met during overlapping shifts and instantly hit it off. Their Dutch love was fueled by their passion for the culture that Dutch Bros. creates. Before they knew it, they were both managers at separate locations, and it was the logical decision to open a franchise as Brian approached graduation. Depending on which Wight you ask, you’ll get a different answer on whose idea it
so great— personality. Brian shared “The beginning times were tough for Libby and me. The customers simply were not coming in. We had many sleepless nights wondering if we had made a bad decision bringing the Dutch Bros franchise to Idaho. Ultimately, we had to rely on what I call “Blind Faith” in the culture of what Dutch Bros is! Dutch Bros culture is amazingly unique and truly something to stand behind in good times and bad!” Dutch Bros. is now a staple in the Valley. Those of us who have experienced the Dutch mentality know that “it’s about people, fun, music, and great coffee!” Brian and Libby now own 10 locations in Boise and have two more in the works. Their shop on 8th and Main St. opened December of last year and is one of the only locations without a drive-through. Rest assured it isn’t lacking any of the allure a traditional Dutch Bros. has. Great music is playing, the vibe is upbeat and positive, and the coffee is amazing. The original Dutch Bros. was founded in 1992 in Grants Pass, Oregon by Dane and Travis Boersma. These brothers of Dutch descent started on a dairy farm with a double-head espresso machine and now boast the title of the country’s largest, privately held drive-thru coffee company. The company as a whole donates over $2 million a year to its local communities and nonprofit organizations. “With its loyal customer base dubbed the Dutch Mafia, Dutch Bros Coffee continues to grow, and, wherever it does, the love, donations and smiles grow also.” One of the most admirable aspects of Dutch culture is their Love Abounds Foundation. Dutch Bros. “sees a world where all people are smiling. The people in communities we serve hold the power to create opportunities for themselves and others.” The mission of this foundation is to put people first. They strive to engage communities through giving and action in four core
was to start this journey, but we’re sure glad they did. In February 2007, the Dutch Bros. on Chinden launched with a two-day grand opening. They offered free coffee for these two days and had a line almost reaching their neighbor, Fred Meyers. The Wight’s were ecstatic and convinced they had made the right decision. The morning following their grand debut, Brian told Greenbelt Magazine there were practically tumbleweeds rolling in the drivethrough. Everyone loves free coffee, and Boise hadn’t had the chance to fall in love with the Dutch Bros. experience. The next year and a half were filled with hard work, feet hitting the ground, and the opening of two new locations. Brian, Libby, and their employees would take free samples and stickers to the traffic waiting on Chinden. They made sure each cup was offered with a smile and a taste of what makes Dutch Bros.

areas: youth, music, health, and origins. Everything from the place where the coffee beans are grown to accessible music programs are touched by their positive impact. The specialty days also make a huge community impact. Dutch Luv Day happens every year on Valentines Day. All locations donate $1 from every drink sold to a local food organization. Drink One for Dane is a day where the Dutch Mafia celebrates co-founder Dane Boersma. In 2005, he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, ALS. “Dane passed away in late 2009, but he left behind a legacy which, to this day, the company bases its daily decisions. His memory continues to inspire everyone at Dutch Bros. Inspiration to give it their all, love every person they encounter and do more for others than for themselves.” These are just a few examples of the amazing ways that Dutch Bros. participates in their community and works towards a better world each day. Each member of the team at Dutch Bros. contributes something unique and special to the culture. This leaves us wondering: how do they find the best of the best? The answer is in their hiring process. It’s no surprise that their interviews are one big party! In true Dutch Bros. fashion, their group interviews are looking for the most bubbly and personable attitudes in the room. Brian told Greenbelt that his hiring process is all about personality. He’s confident in his team’s ability to teach someone how to make coffee, but he can’t teach them how to have a dynamic personality. For those of you who haven’t experienced the Dutch Bros. culture, I strongly urge you to stop at one of their many locations throughout the Boise. You are guaranteed a phenomenal customer service experience, the opportunity to give back to your community, and a tasty coffee. We all need fuel at one point or another, and Dutch Bros. is here to serve it up with a smile. ¢

Year-Round Farm Fresh Products on Your Table
BY TAMARA CAMERON PHOTOGRAPHS KIMBERLEE MILLER
Whether you are looking forward to a table of 50 of your best friends or a cozy candle-lit holiday dinner for two, going local with your food dollars is a win-win for you and our Boise area community. Purchasing ingredients from local farmers directly supports the farmers and their families. The holiday season is a time when their sales slow down, so supporting them now is a great way to ensure that they continue to be able to do what they love to do best - farm. You get produce that stays fresh longer and has better flavor, plus fresh local ingredients that will be the basis for the most delicious meals. Greenbelt Magazine and the Boise Farmers Market are here to help you create memorable and delicious local-food holiday dinners. The Boise Farmers Market (BFM) Indoor Winter Market is your one-stop source for local ingredients, baked goods, specialty items, and more! Although you could go totally local, you don’t have to. Would you go 30% local? 50% local? 90% local? Let us help you make a plan to gather up as many local ingredients as possible. Integrating local fresh produce, humanely raised and grass-fed proteins, local dairy, and specialty foods into your recipes will leave you serving holiday meals made with lots of local love. Karen Ellis, Boise Farmers Market Manager, says, “Our community needs to know that we will have fresh locally-grown produce and protein, plus direct from the producer specialty items like fresh cranberries and dates, indoors, right up until Christmas.” 22

Local farmers are extending their growing season, using hoop houses and other methods, to make sure that the BFM Indoor Farmers Market has a large variety of produce. Everything from salad greens and arugula to fresh herbs and microgreens to root vegetables and squashes to fresh and dried apples plus potatoes, onions, mushrooms and all the other late fall and winter vegetables will be available for your holiday meals. Add in locally sourced protein and dairy, plus specialty items, available only this time of year, such as Salted Honey Pie from Matthews Family Farms or Homemade Cannoli from Ferranti Fresh Pasta, and you might find that a locally sourced holiday meal is your new tradition. Whether you are a traditional turkey dinner type or a someone who does it different every year, here are some local-food holiday dinner combos, with the ingredients that you can get at the BFM Indoor Winter Market, to get your culinary creative juices flowing:
The Tradit ional:
Pasture-raised turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, salad, candied yams, winter vegetable medley, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie with whipped cream. (turkey, bread for stuffing, potatoes, salad greens, yams, carrots, beets, onions, squash, fresh herbs, cranberries, pumpkin, whipping cream)
The Mini Tradit ional:

(Turkey breast and leg, bread for stuffing, potatoes, salad greens, carrots, beets, onions, potatoes, squash, fresh herbs, cranberries, pistachio cream croissants)
The beautiful holiday table pictured was shot by Greenbelt Magazine’s Lead Photographer, Kimberlee Miller on-site at Meadowlark Farm in Nampa. Heidi Wight, Owner and Principle Designer of Ira and Lucy designed the festive tablescape. Heidi says, “I love to play up a monochromatic style, layer textures, and create a show-stopper focal point. Utilizing local artists and farmers creates a meaningful table design for your Idaho home gathering. Lemon Tree Linens brought the hand-dyed, gorgeous velvet runner and linen napkins in a soft blond hue, which ties in beautifully with the textured woven chargers and gold stemware. Heidi carries a wide variety of rental decor elements for tabletop design and will work with you on custom requests. Mother-daughter duo, Megan and Candace Bell chose dahlias, hops, maple leaves, garden roses and grasses from their flower gardens at Bloomin Flower Farm to create the stunning centerpiece. Also featured are baked goods from Wildflour Bakery and fresh local produce available from the BFM Indoor Winter Market. 25
26
The Classic:

From plush reds to complex sparkly ciders to eggnog, beverages are another way to go local. The BFM Indoor Winter Market is open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at 516 South 8th Street (the Corner of 8th and Fulton Streets) in downtown Boise through December 22nd, the Saturday before Christmas. Parking can be found in the lots across the street and behind the building. Both of these lots require payment. If you find parking on the street, remember to feed the meter. If you don’t mind walking a block or two, please don’t park at The Flicks, but the huge lot beyond The Flicks is available. Come and shop at the BFM Indoor Winter Market for all your local-food, locally made holiday party needs! Whether you are a regular or a first-timer, we look forward to seeing you. reakfast is commonly referred to as the most important meal of the day, and for most people this holds true. Getting your day started with something not only delicious but also nutritious gives you the energy and focus required to be productive and overcome all of those little daily challenges that may seem to be an impossible feat. When looking at breakfast options it can sometimes be a hard choice, but on Saturday mornings many of Boise’s residents make that decision at the local Boise Farmer’s Market. The Farmer’s Market is a place where local entrepreneurs can all come together to highlight their creations and that’s where our breakfast club members really made a name for themselves.

WANNA MATCHA
The first craveable breakfast place on our tour is Wanna Matcha. Wanna Matcha is Idaho’s first matcha bar providing a healthy alternative to morning coffee. Matcha is a type of tea made from only the baby leaves of the plant. After harvest, the plant is deprived of light which tricks it, and the leaves sky rocket in chlorophyll content. The results of this process cause an increase in antioxidants, caffeine, flavor, and nutrients. Austin and Ashley Townend started Wanna Matcha after a six and a half week honeymoon to Europe. They soon found that after the big day their energy was running dry and they were tired. As Ashley described it after the first time she tried matcha she was amazed at how much energy she had and how she wasn’t crashing after a few hours. The matcha is sourced from Kyoto, Japan
where the farmers have been growing and producing matcha for over 200 years. This healthier alternative is offered in a few forms including matcha lattes and matcha horchata. They also feature a matcha mocktail every month. Currently Wanna Matcha has a weekly stand at both the Boise Farmer’s Market and the Boise Flea Market. Outside of that they will also do the occasional pop-up at local shops. When asked if they had plans to open a brick and mortar location Ashley stated, “YES! We want to not only provide matcha and treats during the week, but also provide an amazing experience and environment. Soon Boise, soon.”
MUSCLE DONUT
Our next breakfast club member is The Muscle Donut, a healthier alternative to a sugar fried donut. Yes, that’s right, a healthy donut.
29
The struggle is very real in breakfast options, to eat something sweet and delicious or something healthy and nutritious to start the day. The Muscle Donut was born in 2016 and was the first company to introduce the healthy gluten free donut concept in the Treasure Valley and has been a booming online business since. The Muscle Donut has found a way to help with that dilemma by offering donuts that are high in protein and fiber, gluten free, and low in sugar and carbs. Jackie Melesio and Bill Mcglen, owners of The Muscle Donut, are both fitness enthusiasts and donut lovers. Jackie, an NPC fitness competitor, explained that she had always had a love for donuts and even when she was preparing for a fitness competition she still found herself craving them. Due to her strict diet when competing, she had to get a little creative. Her and Bill originally started giving the donuts to friends and family who then encouraged them to market the donuts. The Muscle Donut was born in 2016 and has been a booming online business since. They offer a wide variety of flavors including smore, birthday cake, choco-chip, and blueberry, to name a few. When asked what her favorite donut flavor is Jackie said, “It has to be the maple bacon one with caramel.” Their products are available daily at their online store with pick-up and delivery options Tuesday-Saturday mornings. Their products can also be found locally at the Boise Co-Op off of Eagle road, Jax Nutrition in Meridian, Hyde Perk Coffee House, and soon at Chardoney’s Coffee House in Meridian.

WAFFLE ME UP
Our final breakfast club member takes a timeless breakfast classic and makes it something unique and delicious. Waffle Me Up is located off of Capitol in the heart of downtown and is owned and operated by husband and wife duo Hector and Josie Garcia. The company, as Josie describes, has come from humble beginnings. “We started with one cheap waffle iron and a heavy metal table that we had to haul out of our apartment every Saturday morning.” With their roots of early
Saturday mornings at the Boise Farmer’s Market, Waffle Me Up has now been serving Boise breakfast since 2012. They put a lot of importance on community and source as much as 90 percent of their ingredients from Idaho vendors and farmers. Their waffles are made with GMO-free ingredients following a classic waffle recipe. The dough is made from scratch with real butter and Belgian sugar pearls giving the waffle a nice crunchy exterior and a soft warm center. Waffle Me Up offers a variety of sweet and savory waffles, so there is something for every palate. Their sweet options include many of the classics like strawberries, bananas, and blueberries but they give them a bit of a twists by adding things like cookie butter and Nutella. Their signature savory option is the BOB deluxe bursting in flavor with havarti cheese, a fried egg, bacon, basil, and syrup. Even with their brick and mortar location Waffle Me Up still comes to the Boise Farmer’s Market on Saturdays and sets up shop. All of our breakfast club members give an exciting twist to breakfast with their creative and innovative ideas. And each of these local companies can be found at the Saturday Boise Farmer’s Market downtown where you can taste their delicious creations. With strong ties to the community these local entrepreneurs have given The Treasure Valley even more choices when deciding what to eat for the most important meal of the day. ¢

THE UNIQUE CRAFT OF A SPECIALIZED ARTIST Meet Greenbelt’s Cover Artist: Lorelle Rau BY JANELLE STEAR PHOTOGRAPHS KIMBERLEE MILLER
Imagine the sound of paper tearing, the sound of flames crackling, or cards shuffling. Step inside Lorelle Rau’s studio to see and hear her meticulously creating an abstract composition synthesizing brilliant reds, greens, and yellows. She blends her materials to create rich contours and textures of scenes in nature. A contemporary collage artist and a professional art consultant, Lorelle’s inspiration is our local Idaho landscapes. She says, “When you’re in the backcountry, the higher you hike the more the mountain contours flood your field of vision.” Her unique cut paper art ex32
emplifies her individualized perspective. The experience and rawness of the natural world has always been an integral part of her creative process. As a young girl watching her mother meticulously mold clay into beautiful ceramics in Fort Lauderdale, Lorelle learned to appreciate the intimate manner in which we can use our hands to create stunning pieces of artwork. Lorelle mixed her love for art and business into earning a BA in Studio Art and a BS in Art Management from Appalachian State University; she earned a MA in Arts Administration
from Savannah College of Art and Design. She began her affluent career working in the collection management and curatorial departments at the University Art Museum. She also served as curator for the student art gallery at Appalachian State before moving to D.C. to work at the Corcoran Gallery of Art/College of Art + Design. After D.C., Lorelle worked for five years as an art consultant at a private firm in Virginia, before moving to Boise two years ago. “Boise has been very welcoming and the art community is incredible.”
From her wealth of experience working in the art world, Lorelle recently started an art-consulting firm to help local businesses, healthcare facilities, and homeowners select artwork. Lorelle says, “I have a knack for listening and getting to know [the clients]’s style, brand, and message and being able to help match them with finding the right art.” Lorelle also relishes in collaborating with other creative individuals. When she moved to town, she joined local artist groups, Boise Open Studios (BOSCO) and the Swell Artist Collective. By being able to display her art beside other fantastic valley artists, Lorelle has been able to immerse herself in the artistic
world. “I love that Boise has a ton of support for artists.” Her advice to emerging artists is to: “put yourself out there, join an artist group, and be proactive with your art.” Lorelle will be working at the Capitol Contemporary Gallery in Downtown Boise when it opens this winter. You can also visit her at her home studio where you can check out her art in person (by appointment). ¢

SALVAGE SISTERS & SON Revealing the beauty in being rustic
BY ELLE PARKER PHOTOGRAPHS KIMBERLEE MILLER

It’s no secret that flea markets and secondhand stores are becoming increasingly popular, and Boise is no exception to this trend. Chas and Catherine Wojick run Salvage Sisters & Son, Boise’s prided local vintage goods shop. After four years of ‘picking’ together for fun in Southern California, the two decided to finally begin their own business last September. As the dynamic mother-and-son duo from Redondo Beach continue to scavenge the Pacific Northwest for the best rustic pieces, the demand only heightens for classic decor such as theirs. It’s clear that this team has an eye for top-notch vintage items—even one glance into their shop or Instagram feed will make that clear. With their headquarters nestled on Broadway Avenue, Salvage Sisters & Son is a quaint shop, the product of a passion-driven team who travels through Oregon, California, and Washington buying, redoing, and re-selling coveted vintage items. In addition to this, Catherine owns and manages Savory n Sweet Inc., while Chas runs his other business, Salvage Coffee Co. “We have the sweets and coffee daily to make shopping experience a bit different,” Catherine explained. After their initial opening a little over a year ago, business has skyrocketed for this hard-working bunch. Fortunately, for Salvage Sisters & Son (as well as other similar businesses), there has been a recent incline in the past five years of second-hand buying. The Wojicks have taken advantage of the vast market of vintage items that are begging to be redone and resold in such a captivating way. Luckily for this group, they know exactly what buyers want and how to restore items to their former glory or revamp the rustic nature to create “new and improved” version of their products. Even though they’re a relatively new business in town, they’re already a beloved part of Boise. “We love being in Southeast Boise [and] we hope to be here for quite a few years!” they told me. A large portion of their success is due to their avid participation in pop-up shows and frequent workshops, where they partner with other Boise artisans, including wedding planners, modern calligraphers, and florists to bring the

artist out of anyone willing to attend. Their aesthetic is impossible to beat, making them a desirable seller to both the young and old. They not only sell furniture, but also timeless clothing, ranging from vibrant leather jackets to classic Levi’s flannels. All in all, Salvage Sisters and Son represents everything that a vintage shop should: a perfect blend of classic and eclectic, harmoniously bringing together the old and the new. No matter if you’re into decor, clothing, flowers, or coffee, there’s something there for everyone. You’re truly missing out if you haven’t dropped by their store, which is rich with history and teeming with life. ¢

THE BISHOPS’ HOUSE A House Saved for the People, by the People BY ANA LETE

places, and revel in the fact that each of these beautiful features are original. Built in 1889 (when Boise was still four dirt roads) by architect, James King, The Bishops’ House originally sat on 2nd and Main (now St. Luke’s Hospital) and was home to the first six episcopal Bishops of Idaho and
their families for 90 years. Originally from the South, the first Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Idaho, Bishop Funsten, and his wife, Ida, felt a calling to Boise’s small-town charm. After applying for the Bishop position a 2nd time, the Bishop and his wife moved to the city of trees in 1889. Ten years into their stay Ida wished for a new home with a veranda. After failing to find an adequate Boise home and receiving an anonymous donation of $10,000, a local architect, John Tourtellotte, assured the Bishop that he could turn their pre-existing home into the Queen Anne Victorian style home that she wanted. After serving the Bishops of Idaho for 90 years, the new Bishops decided to stay in their own homes and The Bishops’ House was leased to St. Luke’s to be used as a senior center. When St. Luke’s proposed the building of a parking garage at the houses’ location in 1975, a small group of people formed The Bishops’ House Preservation Society to save the home from demolition. With help from Mayor Eardly, Arthur Hart, and house mover, William Huckstep, the home was cut into pieces and placed on a truck, where it jiggled down Warm Springs Avenue. As the movers turned onto Old Penitentiary Road, the house began sliding off the truck and the move was halted temporarily. After trimming trees and lowering powerlines, the house was placed across from the penitentiary and the move was complete. Today, the home is maintained by Executive

A PLACE AT THE TABLE Giving back is at the heart of Mark & Jeanette Priddy’s Happy Day Brands BY SUBMITTED BY CAITLIN COPPLE-MASINGILL PHOTOGRAPH KIMBERLEE MILLER
Husband-and-wife social entrepreneurs, Mark and Jeanette Priddy, know something about the power of intuition and giving back. It’s the foundation to the values-centered approach that weaves throughout the four organizations they’ve built in the Treasure Valley over the 25 years they’ve called the community home, including Happy Day Brands. “Happy Day has been germinating for over 10 years,” said Mark of the couple’s two-year-old chocolate, tea, coffee, and oatmeal company. “Success to us means not only a profitable company, but also a company that invests in our employees, so they can maximize their talents, and together, we can do the most good in the world.” The triple-bottom line ethos (people, planet, profit) of their company drives a new partner38
ship with the Idaho Foodbank’s School Pantry Program that feeds the families of hungry students and their families. “Mark and Jeanette Priddy’s positivity and desire to make a difference is truly palpable,” said Morgan Wilson, chief development officer at the Idaho Foodbank. “When they learned about our School Pantry Program, their eyes lit up knowing their company’s donation of oatmeal would be going home with thousands of students’ families during the school year.” In late October, the Priddys announced that Happy Day Brands will donate 100,000 servings of oatmeal over the next 12 months to the program. Last year, the School Pantry Program served 1,409 families across Idaho. A few years after moving to Boise, Mark partnered with his two brothers and sold their
company, Richardson Labs, which had grown from a start-up to more than $50 million in annual sales. The success of Richardson Labs led to a 1998 merger with Rexall-Sundown, a public NASDAQ 100 company. After the sale, Mark and Jeanette wanted their next adventure to be rooted in social purpose, so they created Rembrandts Coffee House in downtown Eagle. “By this point, Jeanette and I had four kids, and we had a real heart for our neighborhood,” said Mark. “We thought about what our city needed, and back then, Eagle really needed a community space, where people could gather and feel a sense of belonging. A coffeehouse seemed like the best way to achieve this for our neighborhood.” “Outreach was a big part of the coffeehouse,” said Jeanette. “Rembrandts provided a platform to engage our community around important global issues such as, human trafficking, HIV/Aids, women’s empowerment, education and clean water. Because of our influence from the success of Richardson Labs, we wanted to help connect the local community to the global causes that mattered most to us.” Happy Day Brands is well on its way to making a difference in Idaho, producing locally sourced superfood oatmeal, gourmet chocolate, and roasting organic and fair-trade coffee in the Treasure Valley with the help of 12 employees, four of whom are refugees and graduates of Full Circle Exchange. Happy Day products are for sale in seven local Albertsons stores, the Boise Co-Op, Natural Grocers, Whole Foods, as well as coffee shops, cafes, and hotels. Every purchase of a Happy Day product provides a meal to those in need. “I want to try and put a smile on every person’s face in the country,” said Jeanette. “I want it to be successful, because we see the need to make someone’s day a little bit brighter, to bring joy and create a moment for connection. We also want to give a sense that everyone matters. In a cynical world, we want to bring some happy back.”. ¢

THE GREAT POLAR BEAR CHALLENGE Participants raise money for Make-AWish Idaho, then take the plunge! BY CHELSEA CHAMBERS PHOTOGRAPHS REBECCA BLEDSOE
The temperature has dropped and you can begin to see your breath in the brisk air. Layers become an important part of dressing in the morning and the heater turns on after a summer slumber. Winter—the perfect time for a swim… wait a minute… Not many of us are jumping at the opportunity to dive into icy waters in the middle of the winter, but there are hundreds of dedicated people that take the Polar Bear Plunge each year, all to support an incredible cause: Make-A-Wish Idaho. Helene Peterson, the Special Event and Development Manager for Make-A-Wish Idaho, shared more information about the Polar Bear Challenge and its promise to Idaho to grant wishes to those suffering from long-term and life-threatening medical conditions. Read more about some of the incredible things they have done! Who started the polar bear plunge? How long has it been going on? “January 1, 2019 will be the 16th Annual Great Polar Bear Challenge. It was started by Larry Gebert as a water skiing/swimming event. I think there were only 30 people that year. Now, we have more than 250 people participate.” What wishes has the event helped grant? “Each year we raise enough money to fund about six wishes. Funds raised help to support wishes like Ryley’s to become a DJ. For his family, having their son that was diagnosed was a deep emotional blow. Ryley receiving a wish was a silver-lining in a bad situation and gave 40
them something they never would have been able to afford. Ryley and his family have become ambassadors for Make-A-Wish Idaho. They share their journey, fears, and inspire others to give and to be a part of the wish process. He’s known to others as “DJ Cut-Throat Kid” due to his thyroid cancer, surgery, and scar. Being given DJ equipment has sparked within Ryley a new sense of purpose. He’s been the DJ at local proms, weddings, and Make-AWish Idaho events! He’s is also going to college to study music. Ryley’s mom, Kerri, wrote to her wish-granting volunteers the day after Ryley’s surprise wish reveal: ‘I wish you could’ve seen Ryley last night. He stayed up most of the night. He kept putting his hands on his head saying, “MOM... this piece... do you realize what this is?!?” and “This piece of equipment is a dream come true!” Then he would talk about another one, “MOM... this one...dream come true.” He has them all unpacked and rearranged his room and furniture. His calm way of excitement at Guitar Center certainly exploded last night as he was setting it all up.’” Join Make-A-Wish Idaho in their efforts by taking the plunge! LOST LITTLE THINGS Creating Treasures BY KAYLI CORBIN PHOTOGRAPHS KIMBERLEE MILLER
Tapping into a deep and meaningful creator’s community has been the theme in the life of Tara Dial. She has degrees in Architecture and Interior design from our very own University of Idaho. Her background in event planning and project management contribute to her incredible success and fulfillment as the owner and operator of Lost Little Things. She has an exquisite perspective of what it means to be an artist and how that translates to interaction with the places she has lived. Greenbelt Magazine got the opportunity to learn about how she started, what drives her passion, and where we can find some of her creations this holiday season. Tell me about how Lost Little Things came into existence. What passion drove you to start this business? “I started Lost Little Things after moving to Austin, Texas in 2010… When I moved to Austin I struggled to find a job that fit my qualifications and financial needs, so I started selling bottle cap jewelry and screen prints first on Etsy then branching out into local markets, shops, and craft shows. I later took a laser cutting workshop at the local TechShop in Austin. I immediately fell in love and started making the wood products that I’m mostly known for now.” While living in Austin, Tara was a part of Austin Craft Riot. ACR
is an organization that supports local small businesses by putting on educational and craft workshops, craft shows, and supply swaps. She brought that experience back to Boise by creating the Idaho Makers Association, a Facebook group supporting 140 members made up of artists, market directors, and small business owners who share and collaborate with each other. If there was one thing you wanted everyone to know about Lost Little Things, what would that be? “It’s just me, filling all the roles it takes to run a small business. Sometimes that feels daunting but most days I feel so grateful to walk into my sunny studio, enjoy the sounds and smells of the wood on my laser knowing how hard I worked to get here and how hard I will keep working to support my family and grow my business.” Where can we find your work? Do you have anything special lined up for the holidays? “This will be my fifth year at Wintry Market (November 16th to 18th), and I had the privilege to design this year’s artwork for the show. I received the email when working on the engine of my new 1968 Dodge camper van, so the design seemed fitting. I have special camper stickers, wood ornaments, and magnets that will be available at the show with my new design. I also have two new travel map prints and postcards that will be hitting the shop this November/December.” Tara also started an extended pop-up market, Merry Makers Market, that has double in size since it’s debut last year. Find more details on their website, boisemerrymakers.com, and be sure to check them out downtown from December 1st to 23rd. This is just another great example of her dedication to creating an environment for creators of all varieties to share their craft! STAGE TWO & CO. Celebrating 12 Years of Turning Idaho Houses into Homes BY ELLE PARKER PHOTOGRAPH KIMBERLEE MILLER
Growing up in Papua New Guinea, Ellyn Hoffman used to take the grass shavings from her lawn-mower and lay out blueprints on her front yard. While she didn’t realize it at the time, this would ultimately be a glimpse into her future. Today, Ellyn works for Boise Hunter Homes as an independent business owner and has staged over 500 homes in the Treasure Valley. For most of her youth, Ellyn, like many people, was unsure of what her purpose was. On top of this, being dyslexic challenged her greatly; all she knew was that college simply wasn’t the right path for her because of her difficulty in school. In 2000, Ellyn and her husband David became missionaries through Mission Aviation Fellowship and headed to Ecuador. Years later, they returned to the states, and Ellyn began cleaning houses for secondary income. She would do little things alongside cleaning, such as moving small pieces of decor around the houses. Eventually, one of Ellyn’s clients, who worked for a real estate firm, offered her a job to stage a model home after noticing she had a talent for it. Ellyn gradually began staging more homes. So, before she started her own business, she approached Boise Hunter Homes to see if they would be interested in taking her on to stage for them. They said “yes” and that was the beginning of a beautiful relationship! So at last, in 2008, she started her own business: Stage Two & Co. Ellyn explained ear44
nestly, “I am so truly thankful for [Boise Hunter Homes]...they trust my creativity to fill their homes with all my ideas of how to make a house a home!” It wasn’t always easy though, and it took immense dedication and time to get to where she is today. At one point, she was working three jobs just to help her business grow. Now, Ellyn is a full-time stager who works exclusively for BHH and loves every minute of it, calling her job “the best gig ever.” While staging can seem glamorous from an outside perspective, there is much more that happens behind the scenes that can be challenging. Besides shopping, Ellyn also is required to pack/unpack all of her decor and furniture, hang wall art, and organize/keep track of all 18 houses worth of furniture. It can be a very physically demanding job. Each day is unexpected and exciting, always bringing new people into Ellyn’s life. By integrating Boiseans’ work into her houses, she adds a personal touch, as she doesn’t want all of her pieces to look or be generic. “I want
there to be character to the pieces I pick.” In the same way, staging isn’t a one-person job. You’re only as good as the people who come alongside you; finding people to support you is crucial to being in interior design. Ellyn is the kind of person who inspires everyone she meets to style their home after what they love and can bring out the beauty in anything. Her work reflects her overflowing creativity and passion, always bringing something new to the table. Despite her hardships, she has persevered and become one of the most popular stagers locally, while remaining down-to-earth and lively. As she reflects on her life, Ellyn looks back and sees how God used every job, struggle, and relationship as stepping stones to help guide her to where she is today, and is thankful for the generosity and trust that Boise Hunter Homes gave her from the beginning. ¢ To keep up with Ellyn and StageTwo & Co, follow her on Instagram @ellynhoffman

CHOCOLATE CHIP DELICIOUSNESS HAPPENING IN BOISE! Chip Cookies: The Original Gourmet Cookie Delivery Company BY JANELLE STEAR PHOTOGRAPHS KIMBERLEE MILLER
It’s one AM, you’re cuddling up with your pooch when you suddenly crave chocolate chip cookies. You are in no mood to drive through the snow. Besides, store bought cookies just aren’t the same. Just call Chip Cookies for delivery! Chip Cookies has been in Boise since January of this year, but began in November of 2016 in Provo, Utah. A family of cookie lovers, Sarah and Sean Wilson opened their first Chip location with a mission to cure late night cravings and provide a fun unique experience. You don’t have to go any further than their Instagram page to know Chip is special: “#chip was made for rainy days. Stay home and let us bring #chip to you… Free cookie smells for #boise until 2am.” From Late Night Cravings to Full Service Cookie Delivery Business While living in LA, the Wilsons realized there was a need for dessert delivery to cure those latenight munchies. Sarah, pregnant at the time, had been having cookie cravings late at night; her loving husband, Sean, found himself running 46
around town searching for the perfect cookie that would satisfy his wife. He realized there was no market for dessert deliveries, so he came up with a business plan and they went to work perfecting their cookie recipe combining their favorite ingredients. “We wanted to disrupt the bakery industry by always offering the best, freshest warm cookies anytime of day or night. Whenever those cravings seemed to hit,” exclaims Sean Wilson, CEO and Founder. Sarah says, “We started with a rental kitchen, just doing deliveries, and in two weeks, people were lining out the door, so we knew had to open up storefronts.” By November 2017, they had expanded to Salt Lake City, and the next January, decided Boise, Idaho would be their third location. Sarah passionately states, “Boise is such a good fit for us…It’s a warm and friendly community that loves warm gourmet cookies as much as we do. Chip has been fully embraced by the people of Treasure Valley, which is why we now not only have a storefront in Boise, but pop-up locations
in Meridian and Nampa.” A Community Minded Cookie Company Chip’s motto, “Delivering Happiness,” means more than just providing snacks. They believe in supporting other local companies and have done promotions with businesses like Boise Fry Company, The Stil, and Upcycle Studio. This is just further proof for how well Chip fits in to our growing metropolis. So how does Chip work? Chip keeps things simple: You get a box of four fresh gourmet cookies (the dough alone hand weighed to 6 oz.) for $10; plus, $2 if you want milk for dunking. Delivery fee is $2.99. Each month, the company collaborates with local brands and influencers to create a new Chip of the Month, such as Reese’s Cup, Chocolate Malt Chip to Lucky Charms. ¢ Chip is located at 501 W. Main Street in Boise. You can pick-up or order delivery: Monday to Thursday from 11am to 2am, Friday and Saturday 11am to 2:30am (Closed Sundays). For deliveries, visit chipcookies.co, download the Chip app, or call 208.639.2447. Find them on Social Media: @chipcookiesco and @CHIPCOOKIESCO.BOISE. BOISE’S WINTRY MARKET Idaho-ho-ho Welcomes the Beloved Art/ Craft Show for Another Year BY ELLE PARKER PHOTOGRAPH KIMBERLEE MILLER
Everyone knows the sight: snow dusts every tree on Harrison Boulevard and lights twinkle entrancingly...the smell of pine fills the brisk air and the anticipation grows for Christmas to arrive. As the holiday season rolls around, there is no better place to be than Boise, and its annual Wintry Market! This delightful “upscale and inventive Idaho indie art/craft show” has been bestowing the Christmas spirit upon Boiseans for the last eight years. Amy Pence-Brown and Kristin Montgomery, who call themselves ‘Team Wintry,’ organize the entirety of the Wintry Market by themselves. Pence-Brown (a body-image activist, writer, artist, and historian) and Montgomery (an interior designer, crafter, and art enthusiast) 50
met through mutual friends at U of I and hit it off years later with their shared passion for art and community connection. In 2010, after spending months researching other popular American holiday markets, the two created the Wintry Market; they realized that there was a need for a market prior to the holidays to kick off the merriment. While it used to be held at odd locations including the rehearsal hall at Ballet Idaho and the old Sage International School gymnasium, this year it will take place on floors 5 and 6 of JUMP Boise! The Wintry Market has come a long way from when it first began, and this year, 70+ exceptional vendors will be present, all of which abide by fairly “strict guidelines/requirements... for [the]
curation process.” These top-notch creators provide an array of “quirky, edgy, and quality handmade items,” all priced between $1-200. Last winter, this event was even mentioned by Food & Wine Magazine! There is so much to see and experience at the market for everyone— whether you’re interested in clothing, posters, furniture, baby items, art, or just delicious food and drinks, the whole family is sure to be entertained. This event is free and open to the public, but you can purchase tickets for VIP Opening Night Party through the link featured on their website (at bottom), but tickets are limited, so act fast! With this ticket, you’ll receive access to delectable appetizers, a raffle, and a no-host bar on Friday, November 16th from 6-9pm. PenceBrown and Montgomery guarantee that “your gifts will certainly be the most unique under the tree” if you shop Wintry Market. These gifts show the thought and detail that every good gift should, with an added bonus of a memorable experience at the classic Boise event. On a chilly winter day, nothing will warm up the family like a healthy dose of the Christmas spirit, a good cup of coffee, and lots of shopping! Luckily, you can find all of these at the Wintry Market. Come check out these talented makers and artists, and make sure to say hi to the lovely curators Amy Pence-Brown and Kristin Montgomery as well. Attend the festivities at JUMP Boise’s 5th & 6th floors on November 17th-18th from 10 AM-5 PM. ¢

MERIWETHER CIDER COMPANY Handcrafting the Missing Link One Bottle at a Time BY HALEY GRUGEL
PHOTOGRAPHS KIMBERLEE MILLER
When talking about beer, everyone has their own preference on taste and variety, but overall beer is extremely well known and loved. As craft brewing has increased in popularity so has the need for something a little different. As the Meriwether team describes it cider is, “the missing link between wine and beer.” It has those great bubbles and refreshing taste that everyone loves, in a good beer mixed with the amazing flavors and smells that you can only achieve with fruit like wine. While cider making is an age-old craft, over the past few years it has really regained popularity. Meriwether Cider is owned by the Leadbetter Family made up of Gig, Ann, Kate and Molly. When the family found themselves searching for a new path in life at the same time, Meriwether Cider Company was born. The original taproom located on Chinden in Garden City was opened in February 2016. The Chinden taproom is where all the magic happens. From brewing to labeling, the taproom, as Molly Leadbetter describes it, is the “heart and soul of Meriwether.” Every bottle is hand brewed, bottled, and labeled. When going to make a new cider Molly said they use a flavor bible in order to match flavors and keep the cider balanced. Molly stated, “we don’t buy apples from any orchards individually, we buy juice from a presser located in Grandview, WA who source their apples from Oregon, Washington, and Idaho.” On September 4, 2018, Meriwether’s newest venture, the Cider House, was born. This 52
location is downtown on the corner of 9th and Bannock. Unlike the taproom, this location not only offers Meriwether Cider but also a large variety of ciders from around the world. The menu is broken up into five different groups based on the specific styles of the ciders: modern, heritage, hopped, fruity, and spiced ciders. Molly said with the opening of the new Cider House, she is most excited about the chance for people to be able to taste different types of ciders from all over and really find a cider that appeals to them. The new location offers cider tasting from 20 different taps and also houses over 40 different ciders in bottles for purchase. Every bartender at the Cider House is a certified cider professional and can answer all of your pressing cider questions. The Cider House has even streamlined the flight board, matching the symbols on the card you fill out to the symbols on the board, so you know what you’re tasting. At the end of September Meriwether released their seasonal Pineapple Habanero Cider and for Hoptoberfreshtival and this year they are introducing a new Hopped Lemon Verbena and Lavender Cider. Molly said we can also look forward to their festive Cranberry Cider in early November and an American Apple Pie Cider around Christmas. Cider may be an age-old tradition but Meriwether is giving the Treasure Valley a way to really experience and develop a new love for cider. ¢

TRAIL BLAZER
NOVEMBER IS NATIONAL ADOPTION MONTH Fostering Brighter Futures PC: MAIKE MUNDEN
BY MEGAN BRYANT
At any given time, nationwide, there are over 100,000 children and youth within the foster system waiting for a safe place to call home. These kids are displaced for a myriad of reasons. Trauma, neglect, and other health or safety challenges appear in countless forms. In fact, tens of thousands of these children are removed from their homes after extreme abuse. Not exactly the typical light-hearted or whimsical info you are used to reading in this magazine, right? Sometimes it’s tough to face facts that are so bothersome; however, there is good news. We have amazing people right here in our community working relentlessly to be a part of the solution, and to find homes for as many of these young people as possible before they age out of the foster system. Oh, by the way. That’s a huge concern for us. Not only for the well-being of these individuals, but for our society. Stable home and family dynamics for these youth help to reduce the likelihood of committing crimes, and devastating abusive cycles being perpetuated. Each year, more than 23,000 children will age out of the foster system, and an estimated 20% of them will become instantly homeless. Only 50% of these youth will secure gainful employment by age 24. And, only 3% of them will have an opportunity to attend college. Of the females, approximately 7 out of 10 will become pregnant by age 21. November is National Adoption Month. National Adoption Month was proclaimed to be a month of adoption awareness in 1995 and each year continues to select themes related to adoption. Organizations across the nation celebrate and bring awareness to adoption and the need for families to adopt children from the foster-care system. Fostering, perhaps more than any other area of adoption, has a special sense of urgency to give the best shot for children in the system to find healing and stability with a foster family, and, hopefully overcome their past to break the cycles of abuse and neglect. Clearly, the impact on each individual who is placed into a permanent family is immeasurable. Just take a look at these photos. These boys, including a sibling group of four, were adopted out of the foster program. The two oldest fellas, Nehemiah and Tyler, are currently undergoing specialized training programs to further the advocacy for foster programs and become active resources for other foster children and families who are looking to become foster parents. 56
THE KROHN FAMILY, ADOPT A NEW BEGINNING
A New Beginning Adoption Agency is Idaho’s private, non-profit, full-service, licensed agency who helps find permanent families for older children in the Foster-Care system from across the nation. A New Beginning also provides adoption services to families who wish to adopt infants locally and internationally as well as providing adoption services such as home studies, post placement supervision, training programs (including important trauma resources,) specialized counseling services, support groups and free birth parent services to those who wish to make an adoption plan for their baby. Established in Boise in October 2004 by adoptive parents, A New Beginning has assisted in the placement of over 500 children and are setting the bar in social work high by caring for all sides of the adoption triads every step of the way. ¢ Find out how you can get involved at www.AdoptANewBeginning.org.

BOGUS BASIN A Nordic Guide to the Mountain Beyond Skiing and Snowboard BY HALEY GRUGEL PHOTOS SUBMITTED BY BOGUS BASIN
For most people, winter is the time of year when you find ways to enjoy your time inside. But for those looking for some adventure, skiing and snowboard are great winter recreational activities. Boise is in a prime location to a few different resort destinations, the closest being Bogus Basin. Bogus is extremely popular for skiers and snowboarders alike. But if you’re like me, you may not visit the mountain because, quite frankly, you just can’t board. When you aren’t into winter sports, the winter can be a real challenge to enjoy. While you may not be a skier or snowboarder, Bogus still has some fun winter activities so you can join your friends on the mountain, get outside, and have a good time. Arguably the most popular thing to do up at Bogus, if you’re not riding the lifts to hit runs, is their winter tubing. Bogus has an 800-foot downhill tubing slide with a lift to the top. Unlike with skiing you don’t have to have a lot of equipment to tube, just some good snow clothes. This makes tubing an extremely ac-
58
cessible winter activity for everyone. The tube is included with your ticket which runs $15 for 1.5 hours. As long as the kids are over 36 inches tall the tubing slide is open to all ages. You can even reserve the tubing hill for large groups over 15 people. Bogus is home to Idaho’s only mountain roller coaster, the Glade Runner. The Glade Runner allows you to control your speeds while sailing through the trees. With more than 4,300 feet of track the coast operates both summer and winter. A day pass for child is $39 and an adult pass is $49. At the Nordic Center on the mountain, you can purchase and pick up trail tickets for a variety of activities. Snowshoeing is one of the trail passes offered. Simply put, snowshoes allow you to walk along the snow without sinking by distributing a person’s weight. For any outdoor enthusiast who loves a good hike, snowshoeing around Bogus could be a great way to explore the mountain. A full day trail ticket is only $18 for adults and $9 for children
as well as $12 for an adult snowshoe rental and $8 for a child rental. Winter fat biking is also offered at Bogus. Fat biking refers to super wide tires, generally on mountain bikes, that can ride through the snow. You can explore the nordic highway using the fat bike and transform a love of mountain biking into a winter sport. All that’s required to purchase is a trail ticket. Bike rentals are also offered on site if you don’t have your own. If you’re planning for any of these winter activities, it’s always a good idea to call ahead and reserve gear or space. If skiing and snowboarding isn’t really your thing, or you’re just looking to try something new, Bogus is sure to have something that will peak your interest. ¢
