destination and all the inspiring things to see and do! Our region is the birthplace of American Art and home to the founding father of the Hudson River School; it’s the place where artists from every medium continue to find inspiration for their craft. The Catskill Park is a “Forever Wild” kingdom that offers solace and rejuvenation on hiking trails that lead to breathtaking views. All of this just two hours north of New York City! The Great Northern Catskills of Greene County are easy to get to from metro NY, northern NY, and all the bordering states. Here, you’ll never tire of finding new experiences and things to do – whether you’re looking for a quick trip or a week-long adventure. Add in
spite of the breadth of regional experiences to be had, no one region is cut off from the other. Mountain biking trails cross from valley to mountain, and river region attractions connect to the valley. iding in the Great Northern Catskills is an adventure of the senses. Imagine for a moment that you’re riding through evergreen forests with distant mountain peaks on the horizon. The wind is soft and scented
with fresh grass, sun-warmed balsam trees, and the roar of the throttle from your motorcycle as you gain elevation. The light shifts from shadow to sunlight, cool then hot. If that doesn’t sound like bliss, then we don’t know what does! From valley lows to mountain highs, the rural motorcycling routes that wind through Greene County are some of the best kept secrets around. Four designated motorcycle routes offer self-guided tour options for all riders. Take in some of the most scenic landscapes and iconic landmarks in the Catskills from your bike.
1. The Cat’s Tail Ride | 25 Miles Greene County’s newest motorcycle route was created by the founders of the Hudson Valley Biker Network, Eddie Ramirez and Ray Zarcone. This out-and-back ride leaves from Blackthorne Resort in East Durham and travels for 25 miles along routes 10 and 20, connecting to Cornwallville and Cunningham roads. The route curves a bit like the end of a cat’s tail, according to Zarcone. For stunning vistas and smooth roads, this one is the cat’s tail and pajamas! Mountain Biking for Every Rider W ith more than 120 miles (and counting) of mountain biking
trails in the Great Northern Catskills, there is terrain for every level of mountain biker. From adrenaline-inducing thrilling
hills to smooth cruiser trails, Greene County welcomes all riders.
Mountain bikers have been flocking to the Great Northern Catskills for ages, and with an ever-growing mecca of trails, it’s easy to understand why. In September of 2021, the most recent trail was added to the list—the Colonial Trail System in Tannersville. Known as a winter hot-spot, the “Painted Village in the Sky” is the perfect location for a new trail, making it a year-round travel destination. Greene County resident and mountain biking enthusiast, Ernie Reale pioneered the development of the Colonial Trail with the support of the Hunter Foundation and countless volunteers. Reale describes the new network as being a combination of “rake and ride” and man-made flow track and features trail names like Bear Skull, Pancho Villa’s, Giddy Up, June Bug, Goof Ball, Main St., and Narnia. The trail system can be ridden in cross country fashion with a fast and flowy ride for all riders. As Reale describes: “Two laps through the system and back to your car should get you a fun 10mile ride. As the system is small, I encourage you to hit the Hathaway loops on the same day. This is the beginning of more to come to our area. I hope the momentum continues for outdoor recreational activities to further develop.” In addition to the new Colonial Trail System, the Mountain Region of the Great Northern Catskills is home to five other recognized mountain biking networks. There is one other trail system—Roundtopia—located in the Valley Region. During any outing, be sure to adhere to mountain biking trail etiquette including leave no trace, yielding appropriately to fellow riders, respecting natural wildlife, not trespassing on private property, and planning ahead for your trip.

nation’s first frontier lay north of Manhattan, past the winding river bearing a doomed explorer’s name, into the green peaks of the Catskill Mountains. Here, among the deep mountain cloves and old-growth forests, the wilderness beckoned. Well known among indigenous people, the region was prized for its verdant landscape, abundant wildlife, and old-growth forests.
Catskill Park was created in 1885. The state drafted constitutional protection for 700,000 acres sprawling across the four counties of the Catskill Region, including Greene County.
