WELCOME Welcome to the Great Northern Catskills – where the mountains meet the Hudson. There’s a reason visitors have been coming here for over 400 years. Located in the Great Northern Catskill Mountains and verdant Hudson River Valley, Greene County is home to 5 of 10 Catskill High Peaks and the Catskill State Park. This 286,000 acre wilderness offers abundant year-round outdoor recreation, attractions, festivals, historic and cultural events. Named in honor of American Revolutionary War General Nathanael Greene, Greene County is renowned as the home of Thomas Cole’s Hudson River School of Painting and the inspiration for Washington Irving’s literary legend, Rip Van Winkle. Discovered in 1609 by Henry Hudson, the region is cherished for its rich artistic legacy, diverse cultural heritage and iconic place of literature and folklore.

Diamond Notch Falls: Among the most pleasant spots in the eastern United States, this 15foot fall is a hidden gem. Matched with a cascade that will one day rob the falls of their water, the beautiful scene results from the West Kills efforts to erode the mountainsides. High mountains loom around the stream valley, creating a cooler climate and a remote atmosphere. To reach the falls, drive to the eastern end of Spruceton Valley along County Road 6 (off State Rte. 42 north of Deep Notch). An old roadbed continues east of the parking area, heading for Diamond Notch, which separates Hunter and Westkill Mountains. Diamond Notch Falls are located about threequarters of a mile from the trailhead. The walk to Diamond Notch, about another two and a half miles round trip, is scenic as well. Hunter Mountain Fire Tower Hike: Ride the chairlift from the ski center to the Colonel’s Chair, then hike the remaining two
miles to Hunter’s 4,040’ summit and the fire tower. Surrounded by dense spruce-fir forest, the tower has the distinction of being sited higher than any other in NYS and offers 360 degree views of the Catskill high peaks, Devils’ Path, Platte Clove and the Hudson Valley. 4.2 mi. Difficult. Kaaterskill Falls: At 260 feet, this two-tiered fall is the highest cascading waterfall in New York State. First publicized in the early 1800s, this fall attracted tourists, painters and poets. Formed by a combination of glacial erosion and the interplay of two different types of rock, the waterfall is a product of the water, ice and rock that have manipulated Lake Creek’s stream bed. Parking for the half-mile trail begins one-tenth mile west of the horseshoe bend on Rte. 23A at Bastion Falls. The trail follows the stream through a forest of sugar maple, American beech, yellow birch and hemlock trees. The clove’s steep walls trap moisture and

area was among the premier resorts in the new world. The Catskill Mountain House was a summer retreat for European nobility and America’s nouveau riche. The fantastic vistas from the hotel’s front steps over-looked fifty miles of the Hudson Valley and into New England. The view and hotel became the inspiration for everything from wood carvings to landscape masterpieces. Although the mountain house is gone, this area is readily
accessible. From the beach parking area at North Lake State Park (a day use fee is required), follow the signs and head up the dirt road to the mountain house site. After returning to the parking area, follow the Escarpment Trail (blue markers) north for about a quarter-mile. At this point the trail wanders onto a high ledge overlooking the Hudson Valley. The view is incredible. On a day with good air quality Mt. Greylock in Massachusetts and the Green Mountains in Vermont are visible. Directly east, in Massachusetts, rises Mt. Everett. The Escarpment Trail continues north to many other fine vistas including Sunset Rock, Artists Point and North Point. Pratt’s Rocks: In the mid1800s, Zadock Pratt ran one of the largest leather tanneries in the United States. A prideful person, Pratt served two terms
in the U.S. Congress. He was an avid breeder of prized horses and dogs. To immortalize himself and his loves, Pratt hired stonecutters to shape the rocks overlooking the Schoharie Valley east of Prattsville. From the parking area, located along New York Rte. 23, about one mile west of its intersection with Rte. 23A, the trail leads to a picnic area and kiosk with background information about Pratt. A series of interwoven trails follow a moderate grade to the carvings. Above the carvings, the trail continues for a short distance leading to a series of southeast facing ledges with great views of the Schoharie Valley, Bearpen and Vly Mountains.

HISTORY, CULTURE – AND RIP VAN WINKLE The region was settled in the 17th century by Dutch and English colonists who were enticed by its fertile ground. As the region developed, the Great Northern Catskills quickly became an established vacation destination for wealthy New Yorkers. Eager to escape the oppressive city heat and enjoy the fresh mountain air, people flocked to the legendary Catskill “mountain houses.” Perched on scenic bluffs, tucked away high in the mountains, the hotels flourished. Simultaneously, in the early 19th century, the area’s scenic views and striking landscapes inspired a new genre of American
art with the Hudson River School of Painters and motivated Washington Irving to set his famous 1819 short story, Rip Van Winkle, in the Catskill Mountains. His legacy persists and is infused throughout the region in the form of commemorative statues, numerous business names and annual festivals.
Today, the Great Northern Catskills continue to attract artists, painters and writers in addition to families and friends, eager to experience our many activities and attractions. The region’s scenic vistas and unique blend of mountains, rivers and valleys offer great opportunities for a variety of lifestyles and interests.
Throughout the year, visitors can explore the home of painter Thomas Cole, now a historic site, or hike the Hudson River Art Trail, a journey to many of the places that inspired some of America’s greatest landscape painters.
