TRX WALK-BEHIND TRENCHER LINE The Toro® TRX walk-behind trencher line includes two new models designed for exceptional performance, serviceability, ease of use and operator comfort. The new TRX 250 and TRX 300 feature Intelli-Trench® technology, an innovation that optimizes the machine’s hydraulic flow for the digging conditions. This system automatically diverts the hydraulic flow from the traction motors, providing more power for the trencher head. As a result, the traction handle can be held in one place without requiring constant adjustment, reducing operator fatigue and optimizing performance. The Intelli-Trench feature decreases track wear and maintains engine RPM for efficient engine cooling. The new TRX models also have a new hydraulic design that requires significantly fewer components than previous models. Other features include differentiated traction controls that are easy to learn and use. Operators will find the familiar TRX trencher valve handle and boom lift lever, as well as independent traction control for the left and right track. The boom lift function has also been enhanced with a new hydraulic valve that allows the boom to move up and down smoothly. The TRX 250 has a powerful 24.5 hp Toro engine and offers a maximum forward speed of 2.4 mph (3.9 km/h), while the new TRX 300 has a 26.5 hp Kohler® EFI engine and has a maximum forward speed of 2.3 mph (3.7 km/h). A heavy-duty air cleaner is standard on both engines. Both models are 82.5 inches (209.6 cm) long, 33.8 inches (85.9 cm) wide and 46 inches (116.8 cm) tall, with a ground clearance of 4.3 inches (10.9 cm) and a fuel capacity of 4.0 gallons (18.2 L). In addition to the TRX 250 and TRX 300, the TRX 16 is also available and has a 14.5 hp Kawasaki® engine and a maximum forward speed of 3.1 mph. The TRX walk-behind trenchers are available from Toro’s trusted dealer network.

LANDSCAPERS ARE OPTIMISTIC ABOUT ©PATPITCHAYA@HOTMAIL.COM - stock.adobe.com

espite the roller coaster that was 2020 for landscapers, green industry leaders are reasonably optimistic about the outlook for 2021. Aside from just the health aspects, the COVID-19 pandemic had a substantial impact on the green industry in 2020. The first hurdle for many was whether their services would be deemed “essential” through the numerous “shelter-in-place” policies initiated at the state level. From the onset, the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) and the various state associations were advocates for the contractors to be labeled as “essential.” “Stay-at-home” orders put in place by many states ultimately did not apply to most landscapers. While there were some restrictions, existing customers and potential new customers that were stuck at home started calling. Ultimately, what could have been a dire year for those in the industry concluded as one of the best for many due to the increased

interest in outdoor spaces. The pandemic and its aftermath are expected to continue to plague the economy through at least the first half of the year. To get a pulse on what’s going to drive the industry in 2021 and beyond, we reached out to several industry experts.
Q: What is your assessment of the landscaping industry heading into 2021?
Kris Kiser, president, Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI): While 2020 has been very challenging, we saw a tremendous reconnection to the outdoors. The outdoor power equipment industry stepped up this year to continue making and shipping necessary equipment, helping many Americans get outside and work in and reconnect with their living landscapes. Shipments of outdoor power equipment that OPEI tracks broke records in 2020 increasing by 5 million units, a jump of 16 percent over 2019.

Professional landscape contractors have been saving and during this period of uncertainty, will likely be in a strong cash position in the spring. We expect significant commercial investment in equipment in spring of 2021, and a continued investment of homeowners in their outdoor spaces, which bodes well for the industry. Britt Wood, CEO, National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP): The industry is doing very well despite all the challenges the pandemic brought with it. The lawn care and residential landscape sectors are doing better than would be expected, with many companies meeting and even exceeding their revenue projections for the year. While there are still economic issues related to the pandemic, people will continue to make an investment in their landscapes and lawn care, so we expect the industry to continue to do well overall, considering the total impact to the economy. Sean McCormick, CEO, and co-founder, SingleOps: I’m very optimistic about the future of the green industry. How we responded to the pandemic is a testament to not only the industry’s resilience and creativity but also how essential our services truly are. As a result, we’ve seen large segments of the industry grow significantly in 2020, and capital is being deployed into the industry at record levels, which will fuel future innovation and growth. Joe Raboine, director of Belgard residential hardscapes, Belgard: We feel there is much to be optimistic about in this industry. With historically low interest rates expected to remain throughout 2021, we feel that the demand for outdoor living projects will remain exceptionally strong. Outdoor renovations saw a significant surge in 2020, given the increased amount of time we’ve all spent in our homes. Homeowners now, more than ever, see the importance of having a

Q: What should landscape contractors be doing to take advantage of the opportunities that this pandemic presented?
OPEI: In 2020, we saw a tremendous reconnection to the outdoors as more people realized the mental and physical health benefits they get from being outside. Landscapers are a vital part of an industry that connects people to the outdoors, they
create and maintain those safe spaces for families, children, and communities. Those living landscapes in our communities and at our homes have been some of the safest places for us to spend time. functional outdoor living space and the added value it brings to the home. Adam Morka, marketing manager, LMN: As of right now, we are reasonably optimistic about 2021. The residential design and build segment did exceptionally well, with some companies reporting 40% year over year growth. Some areas, commercial maintenance, contracted in 2020 due to the unforeseen pandemic. Now that vaccinations are being distributed, we foresee commercial maintenance making a slow comeback by mid to late 2021. We also believe residential maintenance and design and build will continue to stay healthy throughout 2021. Sam Williamson, national golf sales manager, Doosan Bobcat North America (Bobcat): I believe the landscape industry is in one of its strongest periods to date. When you compare landscape materials cost from 10 months ago to today, it’s clear that demand for lumber, mulch, rock, mowers, string trimmers, has skyrocketed. I would argue most landscapers are busier than ever, which is a great sign for our industry. We know one thing for certain, the grass will continue to grow. We look forward to 2021 and watching our industry continue to flourish.

throughout the year, and that’s a good indication companies were capturing the work, making money and being profitable. Perhaps some commercial maintenance businesses will have to diversify their services and look to new revenue streams or innovate on current ones in 2021. In general, the industry is still suffering from a labor shortage despite unemployment being high, so operating an efficient and lean company in 2021 should still be top of mind for any landscape company in the New Year. Bobcat: The pandemic has provided some real opportunities for our industry to grow. People are wanting to do more at home and keep their space well maintained and manicured. I think the best thing a contractor can do now is invest and expand their offerings. There is good chance some of their current customers have other projects they would like completed and would love someone they already trust to complete them. If contractors can learn new skills, add new equipment and employees they can increase their profitability. We currently have an industry that can support such growth.
Q What advice would you share with those seeking to get into the industry in 2021?
OPEI: The landscape industry remains healthy, and we expect 2021 to be a great year for the business. The best way for young companies to learn more

and to position themselves for growth in the future is to attend GIE+EXPO in Louisville, KY, this October. It’s the industry’s family reunion, and the best place to learn about new trends, see the latest industry technologies, and test out the newest equipment. The 2021 show is primed to be one of our best yet. SingleOps: Build close relationships with your customers. In any industry, strong customer relationships can help a business overcome challenges and give you time to adapt, whether that’s a new competitive threat or even external factors like weather. In our industry, where profit margins run slim and customers tend to view some services as commodities, building authentic relationships with customers can help differentiate you from the rest of the market like nothing else. NALP: Despite a higher unemployment number than we have experienced in years, the competition to find good employees continues to be a challenge. NALP has an ongoing campaign to attract new people to the industry through our Landscape Industry Careers and Why I Landscape platforms. With outdoor careers being safe career choices in a pandemic, we’ll continue to use the opportunity to educate more people about the wide range of jobs in the industry. options in the industry in the field, in sales and management, and more. Belgard: I do feel there will be renewed interest in the industry as we move forward. During the pandemic, we’ve seen product availablity and timeliness take precedence over price for homeowners investing in an outdoor living project. Increases in revenue will allow contractors to compete with other trades and offer increased wages, which will be appealing both to newcomers and those already in the business. My advice for those looking to enter the landscaping and hardscaping profession echoes my sentiments for existing contractors, invest time in learning and take advantage of resources from both your employer and your vendor partners. These tools are right at your fingertips these days, you don’t have to leave the comfort of your home or office to watch a new product installation video or participate in a virtual conference or training session. It’s easier than it ever has been to keep learning and be more successful each day. LMN: I believe there will be a continued interest in the green industry in 2021. With the adoption of technology amongst landscape owners, more education resources that are now primarily virtual, easily accessed, and free in most cases, the barrier to entering the industry is becoming lessened to those who want to join. There is more opportunity in general for those that are motivated,

Landscape contractor, Jeremy Knecht, said Tractus gives his crews confidence that they’ll be able to finish their daily routes. “We have six zero-turn mowers in our fleet, so anytime we can reduce the risk of downtime, it’s peace of mind knowing the mowers are out there running,” Knecht said. “Prior to Tractus, we’d have six or seven flat tires each season.” Knecht estimates each flat tire costs his business $200-300. “That’s what comes out of my pocket with each flat tire,” he said. “It’s not so much the cost of the repair, but the downtime and potential to upset the schedule, especially if rain is coming. “Having the peace of mind that they’re going to get their route done is a strong benefit.” Learn more at www.Exmark.com

driver in 2021. Modular installation has steadily gained popularity, as it makes installation an easier process for both contractors and homeowners. Little cutting is required, so the install takes less time, and the space is ready to enjoy in a shorter timeframe. We’ll also continue to see geometric shapes and patterns as a popular choice, along with neutral, minimalistic tones. These trends combined offer a very clean, modern aesthetic that homeowners are looking for today. Our next big initiative, Belgard Rooms, allows contractors to provide homeowners with a templated design for their outdoor space that they can further customize to meet their needs. With the move toward functionality, we feel this approach will make the process simpler for contractors and homeowners and result in a space that’s perfectly suited for their lifestyle. We feel this will be a game changer within the outdoor living industry, and we’re very excited to launch later in Q1. LMN: I certainly believe we will see more battery-operated hand tools both in the commercial and residential segments. Some corporations with large grounds that require maintenance are mandating greener equipment with fewer emissions and noise pollution. Some are implementing robotic mowers for larger commercial jobs, but those may still be further out and are predominantly in the testing phase. With the supply chain upside down and a steel shortage, I believe 2021 will be mostly traditional equipment as usual, with some battery-powered hand tools integrated along the way. Bobcat: 2021 should be a great year for new products and innovation. I think we will see both battery and robotic mowers grow in interest, along with increased smart technology playing a part in equipment. I also think we will see more innovations on maintenance, maneuverability, and cost effectiveness of machines. I look for 2021 to be a great year for our industry.

M
oundridge, KS – January 6, 2021 – The Grasshopper Model 337G5 zero-turn MidMount™ mower is powered by a 993 cc Vanguard V-twin EFI engine. This model is equipped with Hydro-Gear ZT 5400 transmissions that deliver smooth response. These heavy-duty transmissions feature large, 1-3/8-inch axles for handling side loads. Available with either 61- or 72-inch DuraMax® cutting decks, the 337G5 makes quick work of large acreage areas.
The Premier Suspension Seat adjusts to the operator’s weight and size. Covered in a breathable Cordora® fabric, the seat adjusts fore and aft with adjustable armrests and backrests with customizable lumbar support. Iso-mounted footrests and operator station coupled with MultiPoint Suspension™ absorbs and reduces vibration to deliver a smoother ride. QuikAjust Tilt™ dual steering levers adjust 9 inches to fit the reach of larger and smaller operators. The 13-gallon, single-fill gas tank sets under the operator’s seat for a lower center of gravity. Large 26 x 12-12 turf tires cushion the ride.
DuraMax® cutting decks, designed from the blades up, deliver a crisp and clean cut. The extra-deep, 5.5-inch design and specially engineered cutting chambers combine to create an enhanced airflow to disperse clippings in a wide pattern. Roboticallywelded decks, with heavy-gauge, formed U.S. steel, are stronger than stamped steel decks. The front of the deck incorporates an anvil-edge design that is 74 times stronger than a strip of steel added to the leading edge. Massive 8-inch spindle flanges anchored in a 6-bolt pattern are mounted to a double laminate spindle plane nearly one-inch thick in stress zones. MARBAIN® steel 1/4-inch-thick blades hold their edge longer. The 300G Series line of MidMount™ mowers include four models with choices of Vanguard or Kohler Command Pro EFI engines and cutting widths of 52-, 61- and 72-inches. obotic mowers do a fantastic job of maintaining grass at a specific height of cut and giving commercial and residential sites good curb appeal. The adoption of such autonomous mowers in Europe has been gargantuan compared to that in the U.S. Robotic mowers technology was part of a discussion during a recent ECHO Means Business Social Media Lounge event. “If you look at

that the worldwide market, the U.S is a little bit slower to adopt this technology than Europe,” says Jake Vollbeer, ECHO Robotics national sales. In the past few years, consumers and professionals have taken more interest in the use of robotic mowers for a variety of reasons, mainly to offset the cost of labor and looking at the opportunity to have a service that is sustainable or eco-friendly. “It takes an entrepreneurial spirit from that ground level and it takes a willingness to get into the space and be able to work through some of the growing pains to get the product out into the market,” Vollbeer says. He suggests that there are a couple of hindrances to adoption in the United States related to the “aesthetic threshold” of the client expectations as to what they want and what they are looking for. “The truth is its growing at a decent pace. As the technology gets better and better, I think you’re going to find robotic mowers will be more of the norm,” Vollbeer says. “There’s a lot of

room for this product in landscaping and in business models moving forward.” There is little argument within the industry that Husqvarna is an industry leader in terms of robotic mowers and holds most of the market share. Until recently Husqvarna’s focus has been on the smaller landscapes, although they are making moves to expand more into the commercial realm and larger sites as other manufacturers are doing the same. Robotics is an area that is ripe for innovation in the green industry. All the manufacturers (ECHO, STIHL, Honda, WORX, Lefthand Robotics and more) are in a race to try to figure out a way to make installations easier and make products work better across all landscapes. “It’s not going to be something that maybe comes out all at once,” Vollbeer says. In addition to installation, GPS tools and general technological advances, he says compliance with industry standards is another challenge.

Robotic mowers such as the Husqvarna Automower use sensors and guides (such as buried wires) to trim lawns autonomously.
“We have to not only create a product that solve the problems that the market demands but it also is going to be compliant with the rules and laws that bind us,” Vollbeer says, adding that for robotic mowing to really take off in the United States there needs to be that product that is just a no-brainer for everyone to purchase. “We’re not to that point yet as a robotics industry, but we will get there,” he says. For now, manufacturers and dealers continue to pursue the early adopters, those contractors that are willing to take a chance, recognizing the future of the industry and wanting to be a part of it.
Pros
The number one issue facing commercial and residential landscapers is a labor shortage. From a workforce perspective, robotic mowers are always going to show up for work and do exactly what they are told to do. At the same time, they still need to be managed as either part of the service or as a role of the clients’ responsibility. “It’s easy to forget that because they are autonomous, they’re always working,” Vollbeer says. “The truth is you still need to pay attention and monitor it. “This is a product that is definitely going to require human hands to install, to make work properly, and to maintain and also to communicate with the customers and clients about what it’s doing and the benefit it’s providing above everything else,” he adds. “Robots are not going to be able to consult and have that that interaction with the customers, which is so important in this industry.” Robotic mowers do provide landscape contractors an opportunity to reduce or alter their
labor force and focus and allow crew members to be put into design and build functions or other areas where there is more significant profit margin. A three-person crew can go down to one person for edging and trimming every two weeks while the remaining two can move into another part of the business. With those options available, some crews are reluctant when told robotic mowers will start being utilized. However, Vollbeer, dismisses that thought. “I guarantee right now robots are not going to replace a vast majority of personnel,” he says. “They are going to allow you to be able to transition your labor into other areas of value for your clients.” Recognizing that use of the robotic mowers can be a cathartic process for a lot of people in the business it also opens opportunities to do a lot of good for those clients with that extra time. “It also could make your turn on those areas less expensive because as opposed to spending time going out and mowing four or five clients, depending on the size, now you can hit 15 to 20 just do basic work and cover more clients in a day, while still being able to provide that that service that your company is known for,” Vollbeer says. In addition, to labor savings, the robotic mowers offer additional savings opportunities. The mowers are intended to be residents of the area they are servicing. “It’s not something that you’re going to trailer from spot to spot,” Vollbeer says. “Instead of going out with a truck and a trailer and filling up the gas in the

morning and going and hitting client spots and performing your mowing duties, and at the same time doing the trim work and all the other things that you provide, now, you just load up a van, or a truck with your electric trimming tools to go out to the site.” Also, maintenance is reduced in comparison to a regular piece of equipment. There really is no ongoing maintenance schedule for the robotic mowers. Unlike a standard zero-turn or stand-on unit, contractors are not lubricating or repairing things on a certain schedule. In some cases, the mower will send an error message to indicate the likely problem. The two parts that need to be replaced and monitored on a regular basis are blades and tires. In addition, technicians can check on the unit and conduct software upgrades periodically. Vollbeer says most failures with robotic mowers go back to installation. “One of the worst things you can do is try to force a robot into a landscape that it’s

Being able to look at a site, measure it and make sure that it’s the right site for the robot and tell the client no if it’s not a good site, is it going to help you as a professional it’s going to help you build credibility, but it’s also going to help the robot awareness and adoption rate. “There are all those types of processes and value-added services that landscapers do for customers are still going to be required but it also allows you to enhance it,” he says. Even the best installations are not going to be able to hit all the intricacies of a landscape and some trim and edging work will be required. Other concepts in development include having the robots web portal to communicate with the client. “The fact that the customer is going to have to be engaged in it is another opportunity for you, and the landscape community to communicate with your customers and sell more value of your services,” Vollbeer says. “I think that’s where there’s a lot of benefit in this.” Also, he says the installation itself is another possible revenue stream as well as the handling and managing of the units. From a cost perspective, Vollbeer notes that as a landscaper, there is no reason that you can’t lease the robots

downside listed by clients. Many of the manufacturers have done well in making sure that the mower doesn’t travel the same header around the border of the property anymore. Still, in some parts of the property you could have tracks during certain parts of the season. There are also issues with the mowers getting stuck in some spots on properties, however, more and more there are tools and resources to help prevent that.
The Future
TurfBot, is one of a handful of companies (Robin Autopilot, Mowbot and more) seeking to franchise the use of robotic mowers. “Many landscapers are focused on commercial or high end residential (larger lots) and service hundreds of customers so this in itself will not quickly propagate the robotic mowing industry,” Lemcke says, noting that the key to making it a sustainable business is to understand the true costs. Coming from Weed Man’s base in the residential lawn care segment she says TurfBot is looking at the opportunity to put thousands of mowers in place. Their first year was more about understanding the technology and some of the challenges of servicing a few hundred customers. “We feel like we have learned a lot and have mastered servicing hundreds of mowers but now we need to scale up

to thousands of mowers in the markets we are in,” she says. “Understanding the cost of acquiring a customer is key in understanding the true ROI.” If you are a small landscape company and are looking to dabble with robotic mowers, it could work, since you have an existing infrastructure and are not looking to create a stand-alone business. “Our goal is to franchise this concept and we need to make sure that franchisees can make money doing this business as a stand-alone,” she says “We understand the residential customer and understand the importance of not just looking at this opportunity to reduce costs but to truly make money by supporting thousands of customers in any given market. “Truly this is all so new to many companies, and I feel we have a lot of lessons to learn, but our focus will be to scale up the customer base through franchising,” Lemcke says. “I think robotics will significantly impact this industry and I see it as the future,” she says. “How can you argue with all the benefits to the environment, noise reduction and the overall health of the turf is impacted? When this takes off, I think customers will demand having their lawn cut with a robotic mower. “ She acknowledges that there is a lot of work to make it more mainstream, but she has seen several larger companies looking into the possibility of use of robotic mowers. “We are so excited to see people wanting to explore this and add it to their portfolio of services, the more the better,” Lemcke says.

Robotic mowers operate autonomously and quietly, producing no emissions.
Robotic mowers such as the Husqvarna Automower can keep lawns trim with minimal oversight.
Bedell envisions future developments from manufacturers having the robots message clients indicating that it’s time to put down preemergent or fall fertilizer, rather than it is coming from the contractor and sounding like an upsell. “It changes the conversation when their robot lawn mower is telling them that their yard needs to be fertilized and then they call and ask for help with that. I just see all sorts of opportunities with that,” he says. “The robot allows you to focus on areas of the property that aren’t the lawn and probably helps you make a little bit more money servicing those clients. “I think that as time goes on, there’s just more and more positives to this and then obviously that gives all the developers more and more time to kind of answer the bell and fine tune their offerings to what’s going to fit their best need,” Bedell says. Just as companies make different sized zero-turn lawn mowers, development of the robotic mowers is happening in a similar fashion. “This is a conversation that’s not going to go away I think that they’ll be having this year after year and just getting to talk about all the cool developments and, and probably over time how contractors are using it more and more as kind of a staple of their business,” he says. “I think that as time goes on, there’s just more and more positives to it.”

o experienced equipment operators, compact machines may drum up images of cramped operator environments, minimal comfort features and rudimentary controls. However, manufacturers have been rapidly evolving the operator environment to maximize every inch of available space, while providing features found in much larger machines, such as climate control, pressurized cabs and sophisticated touchpad controls. Comfort is key to operator retention. “Many operators seek the same comfort features they enjoy in their automobile,” says Sarah Peckskamp, marketing manager – loaders, Bobcat. “When we designed the R-Series loaders, we kept this in mind by offering a roomy, sealed and pressurized cab environment with an air-ride seat, heating and cooling options and eye-level push-button controls.” Other automotive-style features include standard keyless start and LED lighting. Compact equipment offers very little space for designers to utilize. “As we design cabs for our compact machines, it’s vital that we utilize every inch of space for maximum

operator comfort and configure operator controls in a way that maximizes functionality in an ergonomic way,” says John Dotto, Wacker Neuson product application and training specialist. “Wacker Neuson employs engineers with specialties in ergonomic design and it leads us to do things like maximize floor space in our skid steers and compact track loaders (CTLs) in order to keep an operator’s feet and legs in an optimal position throughout the work day. Operator comfort has a direct impact on productivity, and the more we utilize the basic principles of ergonomics specific to the type of equipment we build, the greater productivity we can provide our customers.” As manufacturers update their compact machines, the operator environment has become a major point of focus. Case recently introduced a new lineup of skid steers and CTLs that feature many changes to the operator environment. “These new Case B Series loaders feature a completely redesigned operator interface, including new left- and right-hand posts with simple ignition, push-button operation, easy throttle control and intuitive switches for all core machine functions,”

Software engineers continue to produce updates for existing machines, which means owners should check that they have access to the most current updates. “Wacker Neuson engineers are continuously looking for enhancement and improvement opportunities, which include software updates to machine controls and in-cab displays,” says Dotto. “Technicians should verify that the latest software is installed when a machine is going through its periodic maintenance to ensure that the machine is running at peak performance. Operator Comfort a Top Priority
A clean workspace that is neither too hot nor too cold goes a long way toward keeping workers focused on
the task at hand. Pressurized cabs keep dust out, while improved HVAC systems ensure consistent temperatures in the operator environment. “To optimize comfort, Wacker Neuson relies on direct customer feedback and input when we design operator stations,” says Dotto. “One of the outputs of this direct feedback loop is seen in the way we design our air conditioning systems. On our newest mini-excavators, the design of the air conditioning system was an engineering priority with a focus on maximum cold air output in most hot and humid environments. The same is true for all new product development, with a specific focus on cold air with maximum airflow.” HVAC controls have replicated the simplicity of automotive controls. “In addition to traditional climate controls on many of our machines, some newer models offer automotive-style climate control where the operator can set a desired cab temperature,” says Dotto. “The system then works to automatically maintain that temperature.” Designing better cab pressurization systems has also been a priority. Manufacturers are striving to increase the long-term integrity of these systems. “Wacker Neuson skid-steer and compact track loader cabs are designed to maintain the best possible air seal over the lifetime of the loader by utilizing a single pod design,” says Dotto. “Essentially, the entire cab is a modular unit that tips for service, floor and all. Cab designs that tip an upperstructure only while the cab floor remains integrated in the frame require a seal that can wear out over time, leading to a loss of pressurization that allows dust and pollutants into the operator space. Our ‘pod’-style design eliminates the need for such a seal.” Bobcat R-Series loaders have a new one-piece, sealed and pressurized cab design. “It provides a near-seamless interior for a new level of operator comfort and improved service access,”
says Peckskamp. “The roomier deign offers a sealed and pressurized environment that repels dust and dirt in the cab, isolates the operator from engine and hydraulic noise and enhances the efficiency of heating and air conditioning. When it’s time for maintenance or repairs, the entire R-Series cab rotates out of the way to provide improved access, with hardware on the cab exterior for easy removal.” In many cases, operators spend hours in the cab of a compact machine and it literally becomes their office. “Operators have an expectation of comfort and convenience in the cabs of their machines,” says Dotto. “The cab is essentially a mobile office, so features such as Bluetooth radios and plugs for charging cables are important. It’s also important to have room for storage, a place to secure a phone and good-sized cup holders. It might sound simple, but sometimes it’s the little things like this that make a big difference to an operator working a long day in a machine.”
Compact equipment offers very little space for designers to utilize. It’s vital that every inch of space is utilized for maximum operator comfort and operator controls are designed in a way that maximizes functionality in an ergonomic way.

introduced aftertreatment systems — created large blind spots, which rear view cameras eliminate, increasing safety on the jobsite. Now, rear view cameras are finding applications in the compact equipment market. Many of the latest compact equipment introductions incorporate rear view camera technology. For instance, on the Case B Series loaders, a new 8-in. LCD multi-function display with backup camera comes with all electrohydraulic models, and can be added to mechanical configurations for use with the backup camera and operational displays. The B Series display includes the industry’s only backup camera visible in a split screen along with machine data, according to MacIntyre. “The camera is operational in both forward and reverse and enhances the B Series’ industry-leading visibility with even greater jobsite awareness,” he asserts. “It also provides operators with the most fully functioned operator experience ever found in a Case CTL or skid steer.” All Bobcat R-Series loaders come rear camera ready. “Once installed, the optional rear camera integrates seamlessly with the in-cab display to provide an on-demand, automatic or continuous rear view,” says Peckskamp. But companies are not just relying on cameras. Visibility is always a priority when designing a cab. The R-Series features a new clear side enclosure option that reduces steel mesh screens from the side windows. “It allows operators a clearer view to the sides of the machine to help maneuver more confidently,” says Peckskamp. “In addition, the arm linkage has been repositioned to the rear of the machine, allowing for an optimal view of the wheels or tracks.”

post emergent herbicide in the tank. Controlling emerged weeds and nondormant ornamentals is difficult and so that’s why post weed control is difficult. “It’s just a lack of selectivity and so it makes over the top applications tough, and some herbicides will drift and volatilize onto the ornamentals and neighboring trees or whatever,” Reicher said. “If you’re going to use a post-weed control it’s really best to use targeted applications around the base of the ornamentals using a wick applicator or maybe a non-selective herbicide such as Roundup, Cheetah Pro, or Reward.” Application

of pre-emergent herbicides on a bed can be done in one shot. However, timing is critical. These pre-emergent herbicides do not move in the soil and so you must have good, accurate application. Most pre-emergent herbicides will not control weeds that are emerging from stolons or rhizomes, but it will control almost anything coming from seed. Reicher said it’s important to make sure of the rates that you’re using because that way you can maximize control.. On many of the preemergent products, the rates are flexible on mulched areas or nonliving areas. Generally, Reicher said calibration application is critical. “It’s important because we’re putting out a lot of money in these products and it’s important to get the right amount of product down.” Most of annual Bayer U.S. LLC.
re-emergent herbicide is an important tool in controlling weeds in landscape beds. Whether it’s weeds or diseases, the goal is really to flatten the curve. During a virtual event hosted by SiteOne Landscape Supply, Dr Zac Reicher, Bayer Green Solutions, said the safest and most effective way to control weeds is prior to emergence. Depending on location the benefit of a pre-emergent can last up to six months or more. “Pre-emergent herbicides are always the most effective way to do it, it’s the safest over the ornamentals, especially when the ornamentals are dormant,” he said. ‘’If I’m spraying a pre-emergent herbicide or applying a pre-emergent herbicide, I’d usually try to include a non-selective product at the same time just to control anything that has already emerged.” Reicher said that regardless of claims, pre-emergent herbicides just are not very good at affecting even small, emerged crabgrass and annual bluegrass and things like that. In most cases, you almost always must, if you have emerged weeds, have a selective or

mental operators are the small green handheld whirly-bird spreaders found at Ace or Home Depot. Reicher is staunchly against professionals using such products. “I would not touch these with a 10-foot pole for a professional,” he said. “They have no pattern adjustment they have limited accuracy. These are great for homeowners and we can just let the homeowners use those, they are not for the professionals.” He suggested use of the belly grinder spreaders that he said are effective for larger commercial areas. The challenge with such products is that the calibration and application can be
impacted by a variety of factors. “The bottom line is, once you get a calibrated it’s critical to keep in your mind as you or your people are out there spreading, if they know roughly what area they’re applying to and they can tell how many bags they’ve put in, they know that they’re pretty close to the recommended rate,” Reicher said. Many spreaders have no gauge on how much product is being utilized. Reicher suggests, regardless of brand of spreader or product, weighing out a pound of product and a known coverage area to determine exactly how much product is being used.

weeds germinate at one of two times in the year, the summer annuals generally germinate March and April, and then the winter annuals are starting to germinate around late September, depending on location. “If you’re going to use a pre-emergent herbicide, you really have to time your application in the fall, or in the spring,” Reicher said. “In some cases where you have winter, if it gets really cold, you might be able to get by with a single application either in September or March.” Application prior to emergence of the weeds is critical. “If you’re applying any kind of a knockdown be it Cheetah Pro or Roundup or anything like that, always include a pre-emergent herbicide and our choice would be Specticle, since you get such long term control,” he said.
Spreading It Out
In terms of granular spreaders, Reicher said the PBI Gordon SpredRite is a simple product that is good for narrow, linear areas like beds along houses. He notes that depending in the product, technicians may have to walk slower than they normally would for the proper application rate. Other spreaders that can be found among lawn care or orna Many spreaders have no gauge on how much product is being utilized. Weighing out a pound of product and a known coverage area to determine exactly how much product is being used is a good practice.

business strategy to ascertain that each segment of your enterprise runs smoothly and efficiently. You also have to consider the needs of your staff and clients, carefully choose the services you want to offer, utilize digital tools to manage information and communication, and find ways to publicize your business and build its reputation. Moreover, you must acquire and maintain your lawn care equipment. Doing all this while keeping your staff and clients content can seem daunting, but there are ways to streamline the process of starting your own business.

Be sure to choose a creative but practical name for your brand and design a logo that reflects this name. A catchy name and attractive logo will propel your brand’s level of recognition. You can put your brand’s name and logo

on clothing, accessories, and professional documents; doing this will increase brand awareness and attract clients. Also, be sure to engage in marketing activities to promote your brand. If your budget is large, you can take the more expensive route and invest in things like mobile billboard ads. However, if your budget is small, you may want to take the less costly route and invest in things like sandwich board ads. Additionally, consider creating a social media business page to disseminate information about your brand.
Address Legal Concerns
When starting a business, it is best to take care of legal matters as soon as possible. Identify the structure you want for your company (i.e., sole proprietorship, partnership, LLC, or corporation) and register accordingly. Consider hiring a lawyer to deal with more complicated contracts and to walk you through how to obtain licenses and permits you need in order to start your business. After completing the registration process, be sure to obtain commercial insurance for your business. Commercial insurance will help you make the distinction between your professional and personal assets. It will also help protect you and your workers if on-the-job errors or injuries occur.
Communicate with Clients To communicate with clients, you

must inform © them of when and how they can reach you and your team. You can add your lawn care business’s email, phone number, and operating hours to advertising materials, social media pages, listings, or websites. You can purchase a domain name and create a branded email address, or you can create a professional standard email account. It is vital that you offer clients the chance to review your business after you provide them with services. You can use social media or survey sites to collect reviews. Moreover, you can use online platforms to respond to any of your client’s concerns and rectify any issues they experience. lD nie Da
k bi ro
It is best practice to conduct research before purchasing lawn care equipment. Doing so will give you a sense of the type of equipment that will meet the needs of your business without breaking its budget. It is not wise to only purchase extremely expensive equipment because it could result in financial problems down the line. On the other hand, it is also not wise to only purchase cheap equipment because it could affect the quality of your company’s services. Ultimately, you must use discretion when choosing the types of equipment to buy. Be sure to also develop an equipment maintenance plan. This will help you and your team monitor the condition of each piece of equipment you purchase and make note of any damages.
Utilize Business Software
Make use of business software to help you and your team organize work and coordinate communication. Software systems can be used to manage clients since they store each client’s information and automatically generate quotes and invoices. Such systems are also great for time tracking; once linked
to a software system, team members can clock in and out using a mobile device. Team members can also use these systems to schedule jobs and callbacks. Many software systems allow team members to communicate with one another via chat and communicate with clients via automated reporting.
Prepare for Seasonal Work
Summer is the perfect time to focus on your lawn care business since you will likely receive many requests during this time; be sure to stock up on equipment and ascertain that you have enough available staff. During the fall, consider adding extra services like leaf removal to your list of offered services; this will attract more clients to your business. Likewise, during the winter, consider adding extra services like weed and snow removal; this will help you generate revenue and maintain income. While starting a business can seem daunting, following these practices is a great way to create a business plan that will work for you. If you spend more time preparing on the front end, you’ll have a much easier time setting up your business and ensuring a great entrance into this billion-dollar industry. NA LP Ph ilip pe

DEALER SUCCESS GUIDE

2020 WAS EX H

t is easy to state that 2020 was not like 2019, or any other year of recent memory. Clearly, the ebb and flow of 2020 were so volatile that no two consecutive months were the same, and if they were for you, it did not feel that way. It is equally as easy to state it is slightly more difficult to predict what the future lies ahead. So which adage will you glom onto? The ‘past is history, and the future is a mystery,’ or rather ‘history repeats itself’? Perchance a pragmatic approach is taking pieces from each axiom to benefit the future of your dealership. It is January 2021. Currently, many dealerships are in the final planning stages navigating an unusual period trying to establish important decisions regarding forecasting, planning, inventory ordering, staffing, process, marketing, and pricing, to name a few. Dealerships will continue to expect the unexpected. If there were any learnings from 2020, it was that there was no playbook dealing with the COVID-19 onslaught. Dealership owners and management needed to use

Get ready to store some ox common sense. No surprise many have this trait. Independent dealers and retailers have and will continue to remain resilient, resourceful, and deft, just how they have been for years past. Heck let us be clear about volatility. I acknowledge that by the time this article gets published compared to when it was written in December of 2020, current affairs may be different. Vastly? I doubt it, but who really knows. The key point is preparedness for what could happen is as critical as to be agile for addressing the unexpected. This is non-negotiable in business and life. Those dealers and retailers that did adapt quickly in 2020 not only survived, but many thrived – with unimaginable record growth. Waiting around to have your

Retail defines survival of the fittest. According to Constellation Software, a leading provider of dealer management systems, the vast majority of outdoor power equipment dealers reporting their sales reached a historic growth YoY in 2020. And we mean serious doubledigit growth. Who would of ‘thunk’ in mid-March 2020 after corners of the US were immediately being ordered in lock down that dealers would realize such impressive numbers? For Q3 YoY, 2020, 74% of dealers nationwide had grown >10% for whole goods revenue. During the same period for whole goods, nationwide revenue growth was a 32% increase. Certain regions, such as the North (New England, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania) was up 45%. The South was 38%. This is during the time when the stimulus discussions stalled out, the original PPP package was nearing its end, and the fatigue of learning about rising cases of COVID-19 were back in the fold across certain regions across the US. Let’s not forget the election noise too. To claim dealers were able to capture 100% of this massive CAGR YoY, 3rd quarter growth doing business as is,

Keys, wallet, kids, car seat. Check. Heading out of your COVID19 cave to run some errands? Add a mask to the requirements list. Whether you do, or do not, advocate for masks, sometimes the higher ups have a lot to say about your personal freedom and candidly, your operations. So, let us just say for arguments sake, certain corners of your marketplace today still have mask mandates before entering your store. No biggie. You already adjusted in 2020 to address traffic flow, stickers on the floor, large signs telling customers DO NOT COME IN UNLESS but pretty please we really do need you to so you can buy stuff. No more than X customers allowed in the store at the same time. One person allowed per aisle. You know, the customer satisfaction protocols handed down to you from
your prior generations of retailing. Enter the immediate emergence of curbside shopping for small independent retailers. It has completely redefined the physical point of sale (POS). POS is outside. In the parking lot. In the rain. With runners trying to find the right black Ford 350. This is the antithesis of executing in-store merchandizing strategies, or to be the solution hero to solve their need through insightful customer interactions. So much for “counterback selling” strategies.

There is a segment of buyers who embrace customer convenience. Maybe at the same time a hint of control. For them, having the package delivered to their car is akin to expecting valet approaching your car at a hotel, when previously they would normally park their own car. No doubt, this extra benefit costs you money by redirecting labor resources from one department to another. Is it possible for you to address this new process of buying to be sustainable and profitable? After all, you can buy coffee, go to an ATM, head to McDonald’s, pick up prescriptions, get your dry cleaning, and get an oil change without leaving the driver’s seat. Why not a gallon of Benjamin Moore paint, or a leave blower, or a six pack of BudLite? Its real and it is happening now. E-commerce is not a novelty. is a stretch. The high growth dealers adapted by applying material changes to their operations during a time of uncertainty. Management called audibles like a 2-minute drill and marshalled the resources in lightning speed. One could even speculate the laggards, resulting in the estimated 15% of the dealers who shrunk (-10%) or more in Q3, may struggle to ever keep up - unless both declining dealer segments quickly adapt for the future.

DEALER SUCCESS GUIDE 2020 brought in more customers, the biggest question is, can you convince them to buy from you on the next purchase.
2020 brought change. Now it is time for more dollars.
Get, keep, and grow your customer-base. If you were fortunate enough to gain greater customer transaction in 2020, there are basic questions to help guide your 2021 market outreach efforts. For example, who came in the store in 2020 for the first time, what did they buy, what will they buy, and how will the buy it in 2021? The loaded question is if you can convince them buy from you on the next purchase. First, are you aware of their prior buying experience that could set the table for repeat purchases, or not? One simple tactic is to always ask, whether that be in store, a text soon after purchase, gain online reviews, etc. The customer feedback loop informs how to improve processes, creates efficiencies and thereby effectiveness. For repeat customers, the same theorem applies to get them to buy
transaction 3,4, or 5 and so on. To execute Customer Relationship Management (CRM) effectively, which you can if you capture purchase, timing, market basket, and product info, develop targeted lists to segment customers for cross-selling and upselling parts, products, and service (i.e., who bought product A but not Product B). Be the hero for the buyer. Provide long-tail, yet short form content for your market. For example, instructional videos on maintenance such as how to sharpen your blade, or how-tos such as cutting limbs, or safe riding tips for UTVs. This content can be shared by consumers via smart phones, thereby increasing your web hits and improve your SEO store “presence” digitally. Operationally, if your growth in 2020 was well beyond forecast, prepare for a 2021 surge in parts and service demand, and thus a protracted backlog. To realize this revenue quicker, create
a real-time coefficient to adjust for parts ordering, and staffing. Track the trends weekly to determine YoY growth difference by key models, by customer type, new/repeat customers, etc.
Necessity is the mother of invention
Whether you weathered COVID-19 in 2020, and grew beyond expectations, or you dodged a bullet, one thing holds true. Change occurred, and you had to hug the bear to get through it. Now is not the year to take the foot off the pedal. Lead the charge of change in 2021. Learn to appreciate how you quickly adapted, embraced digital transformation, reliance on analytics to help drive smarter and faster decisions, and changed processes to better serve you customer. Fine tune the more recent new retail operations and explore even more to make 2021 a banner year.
