We had just completed our pool renovation, and I really did not want to put traditional chemicals into our new beautiful pool. I happened to grab Green Living magazine from the grocery store and opened it to find an advertisement about “no chemicals in your pool. I thought WOW... I was just thinking about this for our new pool! I called Exceptional Water Systems to learn more about their technology. After our installation, we found there were more advantages than just a pure clean pool that was safe to swim in. Both my husband and I have battled with inflammation from past injuries, and lived with frequent pain. We soon learned that these nanobubbles also infused our bodies with oxygen. As we spent time in our pool, we noticed our pains had subsided and we felt great! We love our clean, crystal-clear, chlorine-free pool, and we highly recommend Exceptional Water Systems to every pool owner across the valley and the country! Beth and Craig Tieken

Water Quality at its Finest

For many years, designers and contractors have been building some of the most breathtaking water structures we call pools. Some of these structures are so intriguing, and built with some of the most beautiful stones imaginable. But... what is it that draws our attention to these masterpieces? Is it the stones... the design... the water? Or maybe it’s the mystical way the water dances along these features? Perhaps it’s all of these things combined, because the effects wouldn’t be the same having one without the other. Most often we are all so memorized by these great features that we fail to realize the true life and essence that lies within the water itself. I would like to think that these beautiful structures are built with the intent of stepping in and utilizing them with your families and loved ones. Our water is so healthy, when properly treated, that you can utilize your pool water to feed your plants and vegetation around your home. That’s right—and not only will the water be good for them, but they will also grow three to four times larger and faster by only utilizing half the amount of water. It’s very similar to getting a fresh rainfall! Unfortunately, in a normally treated swimming pools, there are more chemicals in that concrete structure than you can imagine. Chlorine, salt, acid, algaecide, clarifiers, metals, and who knows what else! Then to top it off, we jump in like it’s the greatest experience ever, only to get out after a hot sunny day in the afternoon sunburned and smelling like a chlorine tablet! For the next week we watch as our family’s skin peels, and we apply layer upon layer of aloe or lotion to help in the healing process. Days and weeks go by until we have finally finished the process of shedding our skin like some sort of reptile, and then... we’re ready to start again! What if we didn’t have to deal with that at all? What if we were able to use our pool to feed our surrounding vegetation safely? What if we used the pool all day on that hot sunny afternoon and didn’t smell like a chlorine tablet after getting out? I’d say that sounds pretty amazing to me! Well, it is possible, and it does exist! Of course, seeing is believing, right? For several years, Pure Vision Technologies and Exceptional Water Systems have developed and tested systems that provide truly amazing results, and provides some of the greatest, world-

class water quality right here in Phoenix and across the United States. Not only does it provide this wonderful experience for our families, but to almost anything else it touches! Aqua Fuzion is our residential system. It utilizes both pure oxygen and ozone, and diffuses them into the water to provide one of the strongest natural disinfectants and oxidizers available. The diffused oxygen is capable of staying in the water for days and weeks at a time. This extra oxygen provides the softest water feeling you’ve ever felt, and provides the most crystal clear water you’ve ever seen. Oxygen itself is used in hospitals and medical centers all over the world for healing in many ways. When added to water, it offers a whole new level of water quality to many who suffer from the normal chemical treatment process. Ozone is 20 to 3,000 times more powerful than chlorine, and is 10,000 times more efficient at killing microorganisms. Aqua Fuzion diffuses the ozone into the water, and offers a disinfection area 1,000 times greater than typical ozone systems. To balance the pH, we utilize carbon dioxide, which is the third most abundant element in the world. It is highly efficient and doesn’t leave any harmful byproducts in the water. As an added benefit, it also helps keep the water alkaline by not reducing the alkalinity like traditional acid. We utilize all of these elements into one system because they are purely natural! We truly feel for those who suffer from engaging in water activities that they love and enjoy, only to find that in the end they are left with lifelong health problems like swimmers’ lung, hair loss, chlorine allergies, skin issues, asthma, and much more. Those of you who have lived this journey know exactly what we’re talking about. We’ve heard your stories and had the opportunity to visit some of those rancid indoor and outdoor pools. The good news is that there are several pools here in Arizona that now have water you can truly enjoy without these ugly side effects. The beautiful part is that you don’t have to listen to me either, because some of them are now public or semipublic facilities that you can experience yourselves! If you would like to learn more about our systems please feel free to visit our websites: www.purevtech.com or www.exwsystems.com, or call us call us at 480.694.4709.

EDITOR'S

Note

Contributors This month we asked some of our contributors: What are you most thankful for this year?

Happy Thanksgiving! Somehow it’s November already, and with 2020 being, well, 2020, it’s definitely a time to pause and take a moment to reflect on what you are thankful for this year. For me, it’s family, friends, and health. I’ve had the chance to spend extra time with my husband and children, and I’ve been lucky to continue sharing inspiring stories that hopefully make an impact. This month, our Assistant Editor Kyley Warren had a chance to speak with Nikki Reed (featured on the cover), the actress and now founder of BaYou with Love, a sustainable lifestyle brand. We’re loving her new One Earth Collection, a line of 14-18 karat gold jewelry made from extracted gold found in Dell’s old computer motherboards. How’s that for recycling?! We also help you get ready for the holidays with a curated gift guide, filled with products that are sustainable or eco-friendly. Plus, there are inspiring people, innovative programs, and other fun products throughout the issue. I’d love to connect and hear which stories you found helpful or inspiring, or what you are most thankful for this holiday season. Send me an email! And this month, remember to take a moment to reflect on what you are most thankful for. One more thing I’m thankful for? You. Thank you for sharing your stories, reading our magazine, and for helping to make the world a better place. You are also my inspiration!

Angel Fuchs, writer Angel Fuchs is a mother, wife, writer, amateur photographer, and the owner/editor of Yay Baby! blog. She spends most of her time as a personal assistant and chauffeur to her 8-yearold daughter, Jax. In her free time, she enjoys cooking great food and making memories with her family. “There are many blessings in my life—my hardworking husband, my adorably sassy daughter, our comfortable life together. 2020 has been a challenge but has helped put many things into perspective. I'm grateful we've been able to find the blessings through the burdens, and I am thankful that my family has remained healthy, happy, and productive during these crazy times."

Environmentally yours,

How Genusee Eyewear Is Supporting Flint

Understanding the Value of Holistic Nutrition

How to Address Compassion Fatigue

One of Flint, Michigan’s most unique businesses, Genusee, offers the first-ever circular economy business model for eyewear, with frames made sustainably from the plastic accumulated as a result of the Flint Water Crisis. Our digital coordinator and Flint native, Kait Spielmaker, spoke with company founder and CEO, Ali Rose VanOverbeke.

Implementing healthy habits in our daily lives is imperative, as it helps us to maintain good physical and mental health. Editorial intern and writer, Tony Barrera, connected with New York-based certified holistic nutritionist, Shannon Haupert, about the value of holistic nutrition— particularly in our current climate.

For this Wellness Wednesday feature, our team explored how people are now attempting to navigate the realities of compassion fatigue. At this moment in time, the stress that comes along with attempting to care about everything is forcing people to question: What is the real cost of caring?

Helping Sanitize

Reducing Greenhouse Gases

Arizona-based Purification LLC recently launched as the latest in sanitation technology, leading the way in using CDC-approved UVC lights to destroy harmful bacteria and viruses through environmental sterilization and HVAC air sterilization. The one-of-a-kind technology can be used on any surface to sanitize homes, schools and businesses to create a safer environment. Purification LLC’s sanitation method emits no ozone or harmful gas, is free from human error that can miss areas during cleaning, and is environmentally friendly at a comparable price point to other sanitization services. www.purificationllc.com

Food banks in 70 countries mitigated an estimated 12.39 billion kg of greenhouse gases (CO2-eq) last year—the equivalent to nearly 2.7 million passenger vehicles driven in the U.S.—by rescuing food that would have otherwise been wasted or gone to landfill, according to new data published in Advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Roadmap to 2030 by The Global FoodBanking Network (GFN).

RECOGNITION A Top Bathroom in the Country? Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts The list is in—and Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts was named one of 10 finalists in Cinatas Corporation’s 2020 America’s Best Restroom® contest. The 19th annual contest celebrates innovative and hygienic public restrooms across the country. A 2005 renovation designed by award-winning Scottsdale architect John Douglas brought a sleek and modern look, with terrazzo flooring, glass-tiled walls, and stainless steel stalls. Both the men’s and women’s restrooms are fully accessible and also feature changing stations, as well as a lighting system that can be custom programmed for holidays or events. The facilities also include environmentally friendly, low-flow faucets and toilets to conserve water. The winner will be announced soon. www.scottsdaleperformingarts.org

The guide shows how community-based food banks are a “green” solution to hunger, and found that food banks serving 66.5 million people are preventing approximately 3.75 million metric tons of safe, wholesome food from going to waste. Food waste left in landfill releases an estimated 3.3 billion tonnes of harmful greenhouse gases into Earth’s atmosphere, or approximately 6% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Put in the context of national emissions, food loss and waste would be the world’s third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases. www.foodbanking.org

Nestled in the foothills of Southern Arizona’s Chiricahua Mountains is Cruz Farms—a fourth-generation, familyrun farm that’s committed to natural and sustainable farming. The farm’s mission is to produce high-quality, pasture-raised eggs and to grow the finest herbs and fruits that help to not only nourish families, but the greater community as a whole. Cruz Farms achieves this through its ethical farming model—which is built to respect animals, the land, and the journey that takes place from the farm to the table. The farm’s team operates under the very same principles that it was founded on—”respect the land, and it will give back in bounty.” Cruz Farms has long served as a champion of ethical agriculture, and a leader in regenerative techniques that—when combined with traditional and contemporary practices—help to promote the future of efficient farming. Sustainability is at the core of what Cruz Farms does to manage day-to-day farm operations, and it is what has continued to set them

apart from other companies within the state. Their free-roaming hens are fed off of an herb-based diet composed of ingredients that are grown on-site at the farm. This means that there are “no chemicals, no pesticides, and no short cuts.” Cruz Farms also values forming partnerships with trustworthy organizations as a means to utilize integration and to fulfill their mission to work towards a common goal—which is rooted in assessing a company’s direct and indirect impact on the environment, and implementing ethical practices that promote a more sustainable world. In accordance with that, Cruz Farms believes that it is their responsibility to uphold ethical and humane standards for their work production. The farm is meticulously maintained to ensure that the animals and plants that inhabit it, are provided with a safe and pristine environment that’s free of pesticides, antibiotics or harmful chemicals.

Harvesting Hope

Tiger Mountain Foundation unites communities through gardening BY ANGEL FUCHS

T

Tiger Mountain Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering communities through gardening. The organization provides job skills and supports workforce development through neighborhood revitalization. It works to beautify dilapidated neighborhoods through Agri-Landscape. This incorporates fruits, vegetables, nuts, flowers, and herbs into the landscaping of a home's front or back yards, or empty neighborhood lots into bountiful food supplies. This initiative helps alleviate food scarcity and reduces the urban heat island effect.

The vision for Tiger Mountain Foundation came to founder Darren Chapman in 2003. At the time, Chapman lived in Los Angeles and was running on empty from a career in nightclub management. “I was living life in the fast lane,” Chapman says. “And I wanted to wake up in the morning and know I was doing good; I wanted to change my life around, change that narrative.” Gardening was a big part of Chapman's life growing up in south central L.A. He recalls his family's backyard garden yielding not only food, but also hope. Chapman knew that gardening feeds not only the body, but also the mind and soul, and he knew that the planting, harvesting, and sharing had the power to bring communities together.

14

GREEN LIVING

|

greenlivingmag.com

The Tiger Mountain Foundation officially became a 501c3 in 2007, and has been growing fresh, wholesome food and communal unification ever since. The organization strives to restore pride in neighborhoods through the beautification of vacant lots while inspiring people to volunteer and engage in their communities. They also provide local youth with the skills needed to prepare them to enter the workforce. “We provide on-the-job opportunities through landscaping, planting in community gardens, and selling the produce they grow at local farmers’ markets,” says Chapman. It was actually at one of those farmers’ markets where

Chapman met Jan Doughty, Tiger Mountain's office administrator. For the past five years, Doughty has helped secure grant funding for the non-profit and basically runs the show with Chapman. Tiger Mountain grows fruits, vegetables and grains across three main areas of land in South Phoenix. “We have the Spaces of Opportunity site, which is 20 acres, the Garden of Tomorrow at 1.5 acres, and the People's Garden, which is 5 acres,” says Doughty. They're growing pretty much every kind of fruit and vegetable on those acres. The crops include wheat, corn, collard greens, turnip greens, kale, squash, sweet potatoes, strawberries, peaches, nuts, herbs, and much more.

Tiger Mountain relies on volunteers for everything from land preparation, planting and harvest, to selling, tours and education. The second and fourth Saturday of each month they offer TMF Experience Days, when the public is invited to the gardens to learn about the foundation and get their hands dirty, planting, sowing, and harvesting. All volunteers have the opportunity to take home some of the produce for a contribution made towards the foundation's youth initiative. For more information and to learn about volunteer opportunities with Tiger Mountain Foundation, visit www.tigermountainfoundation.org.

“If it grows, then we're growing it,” he explains. “We're able to grow a variety of different foods by using cooling soil and creating microclimates which allow it all to thrive.” Everything they grow and harvest goes back into the community through partnerships with Fresh Food Collab, Local First, Arizona Community Kitchens and other collaboratives that provide food to those in need. “The produce we sell at the farmers’ market is for donations,” says Doughty. “That ensures that everyone has equal access to fresh, wholesome food.” Since Tiger Mountain Foundation provides food to the community, they are considered an essential business, and have remained open and productive throughout the pandemic; however, they have seen a significant decrease in their volunteer workforce.

Sustainability During COVID How a business and a middle school are using SCALE UP to take action and inspire change BY MARIA LOPEZ, WITH LOCAL FIRST ARIZONA

W

While empty buildings and slower foot traffic have heavily impacted Arizona’s small businesses, many are taking advantage of the times to implement cost-effective sustainability projects through the Local First Arizona SCALE UP program. From energy to waste, here are two of the businesses taking part in building the regenerative economy, which prioritizes the health and well-being of all people and the environment.

Imago Dei Middle School

BRINK

Imago Dei is a small, independent, tuition-free private school in downtown Tucson that offers grades 5-8 for children from low-income families. Learn more at www.imagodeischool.org/thread.

BRINK is a Tucson-based, purpose-driven strategy and creative agency that uses design and technology to elevate communities and culture. Learn more at www.brink.com.

HOW THEY SCALE UP: T.H.R.E.A.D. (Together for Hope, Resiliency, Empowerment, and Development) Project, a new small business partnership established between Imago Dei Middle School and local Tucson-area refugee entrepreneurs, has allowed for refugee partners to sew fair-trade, all-cotton face masks to donate and sell in Tucson, and they receive 100% of the funds raised. Since March 2020, they have sewn 20,000 masks and earned $70,000. Already, THREAD is reducing energy by sourcing and producing all materials locally (purchased/donated cotton for masks, thread, sewing machines), which cuts down on the energy needed to create and also transport materials long distances. Ultimately, Imago Dei’s project is supporting its ongoing efforts to break the cycles of poverty while ensuring greater equity and sustainability goals are met for the community.

GREEN LIVING

|

HOW THEY SCALE UP: Already, BRINK has worked towards a culture of sustainability, energy efficiency, and waste consciousness. Through SCALE UP, they helped establish a formal internal Green Team so employees can take ownership of the sustainability improvements, and develop a green culture in their business. To help waste reduction, BRINK focused on local procurement, including reducing Amazon purchases by 50%— and creating a community garden/cool corridor space with composting facilities. In the community, they want to increase their involvement around social and climate justice, especially in the immediate neighborhood and with the homeless population.

The first SCALE UP 2020 graduate cohort includes Witnessing Nature in Food, Natural Building Works + Harris Herman Enterprises, Local First Arizona Community Kitchen, Pop Cycle, Good Eye Living, International Traditional Knowledge Institute Foundation, Sustainable Tucson, and Project Greenhouse.

Time for a Tune-Up? Check out biofield tuning BY RIC COGGINS

W

With no particular intention on my part, the subject of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) has interwoven itself in and throughout this series. Topics such as 5G, WiFi, power lines, smart meters, and even the positive EMFs from the Germandeveloped BEMER device have all been explored and discussed in these pages. In fact, this will not be the first time we will have touched on the magnetic field that emanates from our bodies, but it will likely be the most interesting. Prior discussions introduced, acknowledged, and described the science which has recognized its existence and even measured this biofield. And while we discussed how discordant EMFs might potentially cause damage to this field, in no way however, did any of the research previously explored seem to indicate that there existed a way to adjust or “tune” our fields. But that is exactly where the work of Eileen Day McKusick will take us today. McKusick is the originator of the sound therapy method she calls Biofield Tuning, and since her first experimentation in 1996, she has trained over 2,000 practitioners in this art worldwide. She is the author of the award-winning and bestselling book, Tuning the Human Biofield: Healing with Vibrational Sound Therapy, and she has a second book upcoming called Electric Body, Electric Health that is set for release in January 2021. Her first book shares her story of how, as a massage therapist, she became interested in the relaxing sound waves emitted from tuning forks, and began experimenting with incorporating sound into her massage practice regimen.

Early on, she began noticing that, as she moved the tuning fork in and around her clients’ “space,” the tonal qualities of the sound changed. Sometimes the tone would go sharp, sometimes flat, and even sometimes the sound would “vibrate.” She found that by moving the activated tuning fork back and forth, over the area in space that caused the tonal change, that the tonal change would resolve, and further, that the client would feel benefit. Fascinated by these subtle changes, she began to look for explanations to this phenomenon, but to her surprise, very little information existed which could explain her experiences. It was from this beginning research that McKusick developed the science of Biofield Tuning. Biofield Tuning is a sound therapy methodology that employs the power of sound waves (also electromagnetic) on the human biofield to help alleviate conditions such as pain, anxiety, insomnia, PTSD, emotional overwhelm, digestive issues, adrenal fatigue, and more. It is based on the premise that the human biofield (the energy field that surrounds

and permeates our bodies) is inextricably connected with our conscious and subconscious mind, including all of our memories. All physical, mental and emotional disorders can be perceived as "dissonance" in our energy fields. According to McKusick, “Biofield Tuning is able to diminish and resolve this dissonance and, in doing so, alleviate and even eradicate the corresponding physical, mental and/or emotional symptoms.” During a Biofield Tuning session, a client lies fully clothed on a treatment table or sits upright in a chair, while the practitioner slowly scans the body with an activated tuning fork, beginning from a distance of up to several feet. The practitioner is “feeling” for resistance and turbulence in the client's energy field, as well as listening for any change in the overtones and undertones of the tuning fork that may occur. When the practitioner encounters an enturbulated area, he/she continues to activate the tuning fork and hold it in that spot. Research suggests the body’s organizational energy uses the steady coherent vibrational frequency of the tuning fork to "tune" itself. Soon, the dissonance resolves and the resistance gives way. This seems to correspond to the release of subconsciously held tension in the body. In time, McKusick recognized that certain aspects of her art seemed to dovetail with related sciences, such as that of Energy Medicine. In fact, her instructional Biofield Anatomy Map, used for training and explaining her techniques, clearly displays the Chakra locations. Benefits to clients are both physical and mental. McKusick has evolved to see this process as "consciousness hacking,” a side-door entry if you will, into the psyche. She indicates she is “working with what has been hidden in plain view.” With this technique, McKusick assists people in making changes they otherwise could not make on their own. For me, the most fascinating thing about this course of study is that it works with the premise that rather than being located in the brain, as has been taught by Western science, our memories and yes, even our consciousness, is encoded into our biofield, where it can be “massaged” and discharged, if need be, with the proper frequencies. There is even a component of this science that addresses ancestral upsets. But that’s a topic of its own. As you might guess, there is so much more to this subject than we’ve covered here. It is my hope that I have piqued your interest enough to seek out more information on this practice, and to see what value it might hold for you. McKusick has a number of videos on YouTube where she develops the underlying concepts of her practice, and also demonstrates her techniques on camera. Of course, her book would also be a good place to start. Also, with the more than 2,000 practitioners she has trained, there is likely one near to you. Perhaps you wish to experience a biofield tune-up for yourself! NOVEMBER 2020

The Dazzle Dry system offers long-lasting, fast-drying, nontoxic nail polish BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN

P

Picture a nail polish system that’s not a gel, not a hybrid, and not a traditional polish. It lasts, chip-free, for up to two weeks, dries in just five minutes, is vegan, and is nontoxic—free of formaldehyde, TPHP, nitrocellulose, and more.

While it may sound too good to be true, it does exist—and it works. “I believed that there was a need for a nail polish system that air dries in five minutes without the use of UV light, wears chip-free for seven to 14 days, comes off with regular polish removers, and leads to stronger, healthier natural nails,” explains Vivian Valenty, the founder and president of Dazzle Dry. “I also wanted the product to be clean [no toxic, allergenic, or endocrine-disrupting ingredients] because I believe that what we apply on our body impacts our overall health. Creating Dazzle Dry from scratch gave me the assurance that the product will be vegan and produced in an ethical, sustainable way.” It took Valenty, a Chandler, Arizona, resident with a Ph.D. in organic chemistry—with a specialty in bio-organic chemistry—about 10 years to create the product, which launched in 2007. Valenty invented the first UV Top Coat that dried a freshly applied manicure using UV light. “At about the same time, I invented a coating that became the gold standard for making sublimation dye-decorated ceramic articles dishwasher-safe. But it was the statement from the U.S. FDA that spurred me to develop Dazzle Dry. The FDA said that, ‘UV-A is potentially more dangerous

than UV-B.’ Although UV-B causes sunburn, the light only penetrates the epidermis, which is composed mainly of dead skin cells, while UV-A goes past the epidermis, through the dermis, and into the subcutaneous layer, where cell activity is happening. “I took this very seriously and started working on what became Dazzle Dry. The name derives from my thought that women will get dazzled by how fast the product dries and how long it will stay on their nails compared to a traditional polish,” she explains. The system is a unique four-step system that includes a nail prep, base coast, lacquer, and top coat. “Spreading the Dazzle Dry knowledge with DIYers and nail industry professionals may just be the easiest thing I have ever done,” says Silva Nahabedian, Dazzle Dry’s director of education. “As a natural nail care specialist for over 23 years, never have I experienced products as distributive and revolutionary as Dazzle Dry. I will tell anyone who will listen about the benefits of this remarkable system, which is designed to solve problems, not create them.” Find Dazzle Dry at www.dazzledry.com, through the Spa Locator found on the website, and in top luxury spas and salons around the world.

Swap & Shop

Swap Society is the future of fashion resale BY KYLEY WARREN

B

Back in 2010—long before sustainability was a cultural trend and fashion designers were hailed for their eco-conscious practices—Nicole Robertson was, like so many, simply a woman in love with the creative expression that’s provided through personal style.

“I'm one of those people who really enjoys mixing up what I wear to better reflect my mood or whatever it is that I want to express about myself that day. I just love the art of getting dressed,” says Robertson.

Members simply send in the clothes that don’t fit or that aren’t their current style, in exchange for points which can be used toward new, pre-loved clothes of equal value via the site’s ever-changing inventory.

But once Robertson began to understand the unfortunate realities of the fashion industry, she felt inspired to find an alternative to shopping that would help preserve her style, without polluting the planet in the process.

“Aside from clothes swapping being super fun, I have saved a lot of money as a result, and I have also reduced my personal carbon footprint.”

“When I really learned about all of the environmental issues and human rights abuses—specifically, that millions of women and children are living in modern-day slavery and working in these supply chains—I just felt that I didn't want to be a part of that system,” says Robertson. “I love fashion, but I don't think that it should be at the cost of the Earth or something that harms other people in the process.” The apparel industry is one of the largest industrial polluters in the world, and clothing waste is a huge problem—with the average American known to throw away nearly 70 pounds of clothes every year. Robertson began assessing her own consumption habits— which compelled her to commit to swapping the clothes she already had, and avoiding ever buying new clothing items again. But she was on the verge of something much bigger than just a personal commitment to be better—and she’d quickly discovered a niche demographic of women looking for a space that would allow them to easily shop pre-worn styles that they could then give a second life. Her love for sustainable fashion eventually evolved into a full-time job as an entrepreneur, and a first-of-its-kind resale business model, known as Swap Society. Swap Society is an online clothing swap that makes it easy and affordable to embrace new styles and mix up your wardrobe in a sustainable way. It’s also the only online clothing swap that gives you equal value for your clothes.

The company’s point system also helps to make sure that users get equal value for the clothes they swap, in an effort to not only save them a fair amount of money, but to also ensure that unwanted clothing isn’t simply disposed of or sent to landfills. Swap Society uses a proprietary algorithm to assign a fair point value to each garment received. Instead of markups, everything ordered from the site costs points plus a per-item fee of $3.99 or $4.99, depending on membership type. Swap Society is different from other clothing resale brands in that it accepts all brands in all of its different states—regardless of how used or old it may be. While other companies are more particular in the items they choose to accept or redistribute, Swap Society was built on the belief that wearable clothing should be kept in circulation for as long as possible. The company—as detailed by Robertson—offers women the opportunity to “consume less, without sacrificing style.” “More than anything, I want to have our service be a mainstay for people—and particularly, for more women—so that they just get in the habit of thinking about shopping secondhand before shopping for new styles every time there's a fresh fad or trend,” she says. “Fashion is fun—it really is. But it's also really damaging in so many ways. I want to change the narrative surrounding resale clothes, and just make sustainable fashion more accessible as a whole.” For more information, visit www.swapsociety.co.

Nikki Reed Strikes Gold BY KYLEY WARREN

The actress-turned-environmental advocate stepped away from Hollywood to tap into another creative space—designing luxury jewelry that’s as sustainable as it is chic

T

Throughout her expansive 17-year career, storytelling has always been at the forefront of Nikki Reed’s work—beginning at age 13 when she was tapped to cowrite and star in the coming-of-age drama, Thirteen, and continuing on through her diverse acting roles and famous portrayal of vampire Rosalie Hale in the film adaptation of the wildly successful Twilight series. Now, Reed has transitioned her creative efforts into the world of conscious storytelling and environmentalism through her sustainable lifestyle brand, BaYou with Love. BaYou with Love is rooted in the desire to “achieve the very balance we find in nature, in the fashion world.” Even in its earliest stages, Reed knew that she had discovered a niche market that would give her company the potential to evolve into something truly special. In an effort to keep the business as small as possible, she opted out of reaching out to investors, and instead decided to recruit a six-person team to help manage the business alongside her when it launched in 2017. This small-business mindset carried over into production methods too, with the company making an early commitment to source items only from local manufacturers in Los Angeles, as a means to help reduce the brand’s carbon footprint. In 2018, she was approached by an all-female team at Dell who were looking to repurpose their e-waste—the tech giant is known to use nearly 7,000 pounds of gold per year in its products. The pitch eventually evolved into a partnership which would help to recycle the company’s trashed tech, and inspire the One Earth Collection—Reed’s line of 14-18 karat gold jewelry made from the extracted gold found in Dell’s old computer motherboards. The move eventually earned BaYou with Love a Fast Company nomination for innovation and

design, and quickly put her eco-startup in the same category as brands like Nike and Apple. We had the chance to connect with Nikki and ask her questions about the value of sustainable beauty, the challenges of ethical business management, and how motherhood has influenced her career as an entrepreneur. This interview has been edited for length and clarity. Sustainability often feels like a buzzword that's thrown around in the business space, but rarely broken down. What does BaYou with Love do specifically to truly embody a sustainable company, and to leave the smallest footprint possible? At BaYou, we create fine jewelry using recycled—as opposed to newly mined gold—and specifically recycled gold from used technology through our partnership with Dell. We currently produce everything in California at our downtown Los Angeles manufacturing facility. We also offer all of our clients the option to choose a carbon-neutral grown diamond for their engagement or bespoke piece instead of a mined diamond. The cultivated diamonds we source are grown using solar energy in California, as well. Our goal is to go from being sustainable to regenerative in the next year or two.

The company name is so unique and beautiful. Where did the inspiration for it come from? Thank you! My husband grew up on the Bayou waterfront in Louisiana, so I always thought I would name a child Bayou, but then I birthed a company before I had my daughter! You've advocated for the importance of collaboration and "combining worlds" in business. Has your partnership with Dell inspired you to want to work within other facets of sustainability more, or to collaborate with other companies to expand the reach of BaYou with Love? I have always approached business with the “together we are stronger” mentality, likely due to my background work in activism. I don’t think we will ever make true progress as activists if we don’t lean on each other, share and provide resources, partner, etc. If we act as islands, we can’t really move the needle. With BaYou, I try and approach business in the same way. We have a section of our website dedicated to sharing some of our vendors, and talk openly about how we produce. The goal is not for BaYou to be the only company doing this, but to inspire others to join us! How can the bioeconomy help us to find sustainable solutions for the future? I think holding ourselves accountable and having reliable sources of information are crucial for real change. We need to incentivize companies to produce in a more conscious way, while educating consumers so they ask the right questions and put more pressure on businesses to change. The more information is readily available, the better! What advice do you have for entrepreneurs who want to run their business in an ethical way? The truth is, running a sustainable/ethical/eco-conscious business has its challenges. It does! There are inevitably shortcuts that will pop up which could potentially make things easier, but you can’t take them, because shortcuts often mean less sustainable or ethical. The only path is the one you are on, and you have to commit. On a daily basis I’m presented with options to produce faster and cheaper which, technically speaking, is built into the DNA of most companies. But BaYou focuses on slow production, small batches, with sustainability at our core.

GREEN LIVING

greenlivingmag.com

You've had such a successful acting career. Has it been challenging having to pivot away from Hollywood? Moving away from acting was definitely a conscious choice that I made knowing there were other areas of passion I had to explore. I have always known I would do something outside of acting. I started my career as a writer, and always felt the desire to tell stories. Making jewelry is another aspect of storytelling. I think what we create, where we put our time, where we find inspiration are all parts of storytelling. I get to dive deeper into my creative self, while also sharpening my tools as a business owner. We are a small company, so I still work in every single area of the company. I design, I create, but I also handle operations as well. Everything from building product pages, to web design, to accounting, to photography; I do it all. We also have an amazing BaYou team that continues to grow with a ton of passion, and I’m so grateful for their commitment to the brand and mission. How do you practice mindfulness and sustainability in your own home? The work/life balance is definitely tough right now. It’s hard to set boundaries with yourself when I can work remotely because I find myself working 16+ hours a day since there is always more to do. With BaYou being a small company, I am still catching up on things and to-do’s from a year ago. There’s always so much to manage! So my mindful practice has been reminding myself to slow down. As a household, we are very conscious of what we bring in, and where it goes when it leaves. We buy in bulk and rarely bring new plastic into the home. We make sure to recycle. We compost. We drink water from a well, we grow a lot of our own food or we buy from a nearby farm so we don’t have to go to the supermarket. We use hydroponic growing towers for veggies and herbs that reuse water to reduce water waste. My daughter pretty much only wears hand-me-downs, we don’t buy new clothes, we just pass around amongst neighbors. But still, there’s always more to do. Has motherhood made the work that you do feel more important—knowing that you're not just helping to create a more conscious world for future generations, but for your daughter, as well? Absolutely. Every day I learn new things I want to incorporate into our life for her future and the future of

our planet. She is my greatest source of inspiration and motivation to be a part of creating a life that is one which helps regenerate. I have always loved plants and animals, but my connection to the Earth definitely expanded after becoming a mom, and my passion only continues to grow. BaYou With Love feels, in many ways, like it was your first baby before you actually had a baby. As the brand expands, does that make it harder to let go of some of the control? I would like to always stay a small business, because I think the morals of the company mirror mine, and I don’t feel the need to grow to a point where we lose sight of who we are as a brand and what we stand for. We produce in a way that could so easily be replaced by a less sustainable model if another entity were to take over. We don’t cut corners, because I have made it clear that we will travel the harder road if it means better, more conscious production in the end, and I am not willing to let go if it means compromising! What does the future look like for BaYou With Love? Right now I am really focused on creating products that are versatile. One of the reasons I love working with gold is because it is a treasure, an heirloom, something people hold on to for a lifetime. It doesn’t often end up in landfills polluting our earth, and technically it came from the Earth, so working with the elements feels like the path we will stay on. But given the fact that I can’t change the cost of gold, and it is a luxury item, I want to create pieces that are multifunctional so those who can’t necessarily afford a ton of jewelry can still be a part of the BaYou story by purchasing one piece in their lifetime which can have many functions. Less is more. We have to buy less but buy better. I know this goes against the conventional business model handbook, but it’s who we are as a company and I know there is a way to succeed without abandoning our mission! Very Vessl BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN

Talking with GRAMMY® Award-winning artist Miguel, and Vessl CEO Walter Apodaca, on their collaboration—and the revolutionary product

V

Vessl™ is truly a unique product—one that CEO Walter Apodaca is excited to share with the market, and one that has drawn GRAMMY® Award-winning singer, songwriter, producer, and global artist Miguel to join the team as a creative advisor and sustainability ambassador.

What is Vessl? It is a patented, pressurized dosing and dispensing system in the form of closure or bottle cap, which automatically propels and instantly mixes concentrated ingredients into a base container. “Many consumer products that are packaged in bottles, such as beverages, have water as their primary ingredient. By storing the concentrated active ingredients in the Vessl closure, these same products can be sold in environmental and ecommercefriendly multipacks, consisting of a single reusable bottle and multiple Vessl refills,” Apodaca explains. ”Once the initial bottle has been used, simply refill it with water and reuse the bottle by twisting on another Vessl. “Why ship water? It’s available at home, at work, and on the go. Vessl allows us to eliminate the unnecessary transport of these products and their associated single-use bottle waste.” We sat down with Apodaca and Miguel to chat about the company. How did this product come to be developed and how long did it take? Walter Apodaca: Vessl was developed by a Scottish inventor named Bernard Frutin. Prior to developing Vessl, he created the ''widget,'' which produces a draught-type head on a can of beer. His idea was sold to a major brewery for an undisclosed sum. When Mr. Frutin encounters a problem, he invents a solution. Vessl was born of this same inventive spirit. I’ve spent a career as an executive in the beverages

industry with various companies, including Coca-Cola and MillerCoors. When I first saw the Vessl technology, I Walter Apodaca

immediately recognized the promise for the technology in the beverage space. Vessl acquired the rights to the technology for the beverage category in 2012, and in 2016 expanded this to the global rights to the technology for all applications for the life of the patent and patents for any subsequent improvements on the technology. I recognized the enormous potential, but believed that Vessl needed to demonstrate commercial success before any third party would pay to use it, so we founded Vessl. After securing the global rights to the technology and launching products that are now distributed in 50 countries worldwide, Vessl has set the stage to upend the disposable bottle paradigm and enable efficient and eco-friendly ecommerce solutions for a wide range of products and industries.

mixing process by the user, which is often time-consuming, prone to error, and messy. By purging oxygen from headspace and preserving the active content under pressure with an inert gas such as nitrogen, Vessl reduces or prevents degradation and eliminates the need for chemical preservatives in perishable items. For cosmetic, chemical, medical and pharmaceutical applications, the precise dosing and instant mixing provided by Vessl eliminates complexity and allows for revolutionary packaging systems. What sets this product apart? WA: Vessl is a patented device with significant global coverage. The system provides formulators and marketers with a unique opportunity to significantly enhance the functional efficacy, accuracy of dosing, mixing and sensory impact of their products. Aside from the ability to deliver products in a concentrated format for use with reusable bottles, we are able to address other product development constraints. By purging oxygen from headspace and preserving the active content under pressure of an inert gas such as nitrogen, Vessl reduces or prevents degradation and eliminates the need for chemical preservatives in perishable items. For chemical, medical and pharmaceutical applications, the precise dosing and instant mixing provided by Vessl eliminates complexity and allows for revolutionary packaging systems. How will this impact the environment? WA: One of the primary benefits of Vessl is replacing traditional bottled products with Vessl pods for use on reusable bottles. With reusable bottles, Vessl eliminates single-use disposable bottle waste. We also eliminate the associated freight for inbound empty bottles, the delivery of those bottles to the consumer, and the associated packaging materials for these heavy and bulky items. This represents end-to-end supply chain savings, including fuel, freight, and the associated carbon emissions. As traditional retail is eroded, which is only being accelerated by COVID-19, Vessl is an optimal solution to offset singlebottle delivery to the home. What problem were you trying to solve with this? WA: Vessl is a tremendously versatile solution. We are working with companies for applications of the technology in fields as wide-ranging as beverages, disinfectants, pharmaceuticals, and much more. • Kalvara—Four-pack reusable bottle • Kalvara—Five-pack reusable bottle What are some of its other applications? WA: Personalized Skin Care Serums. The Vessl closure was used to solve the problem of short shelf life and supply chain logistics with a beauty cream. Prior to using Vessl as a solution, the serum component of the beauty cream had a short shelf life of 30-90 days. This limited the distribution geographic footprint, and required end users always have refrigeration available. Vessl allowed artistry to fill the Vessl closure with the serum and extended the shelf life of the product for up to two to three years, without refrigeration. In addition, the Vessl closure allowed for the customization of the product, with multiple serums being offered to address different solutions (dry skin, age spots, wrinkles, etc.), thereby adding additional profit channels and increasing demand. Also, Kalvara. The Vessl closure is being used with this product to offer a radically unique Cannabis beverage. The active ingredient in cannabis degrades rapidly without preservation and/or refrigeration. Vessl allows the beverage to be shelf-stable at room temperature for an extended period of time. More importantly, because we are able to deliver a liquid nano-emulsion from the pressurized inert environment provided by Vessl, we are able to deliver a precisely measured, highly efficacious dose with rapid onset and high bioavailability. What do you see in the future for this product? WA: The Vessl closure can be customized for different sizes and shapes, and can even be adapted to store two different types of liquids in separate chambers, or a liquid and a powder. This allows for the use on a virtually unlimited number of applications, for anything requiring the final mixing of ingredients at the point of use, to applications requiring the preservation of natural ingredients with the use of artificial preservatives, to environmentally friendly applications allowing for elimination of the disposable bottle paradigm, or any combination of any of the above. Vessl aims to disrupt industries and eCommerce in the most virtuous ways. We see that Vessl being used across product categories in everyone’s home. Vessl transforms the household with reusable bottle formats, thus eliminating single-use plastic bottles whether in beverage, household and cleaning, personal care and beauty, baby products, and much more. Why did you become involved with Vessl? Miguel: I’ve been looking for alternative solutions that can reduce carbon emissions and eliminate single-use plastic for some time, and I knew this was the company to align with. I had to be involved with Vessl once I saw how great their technology was, and how large of an impact the brand would make on the world. I personally have a deep passion for sustainability, and together we will drive positive change in a quantifiable way. What does being an ambassador for the company mean to you? M: I get to use my platform to educate people about alternative solutions that I believe in. Being an ambassador allows me to use my creativity in a way to make a positive impact to the future of the Earth. How will your company, Schedule 1 Concepts, be involved? M: Schedule 1 Concepts will lead the design of limitededition reusable bottles that support all Vessl-powered beverages. What types of sustainability do you practice in your own life? M: I’ve been driving an electric vehicle for some time now and our household does not use plastic water bottles ever. In general, I make a large effort to minimize single-use plastics in my everyday life. I’m also a big supporter in sustainable fashion. What is on the horizon for you in addition to Vessl? M: As you know, I’m working on the reusable bottle program and Kalvara products with Vessl. Separate from that, music, film, and sustainable fashion.

In 2007, Dr. Andrew Weil M.D. and André Fasciola fell in love with traditional matcha on a business trip to Japan. With a shared mission to expand the reach of the product—and to speak on its undeniable health benefits—the duo founded MatchaKari, with the hope of providing an experiential alternative to coffee and sugary drinks to American consumers. MatchaKari is rooted in the belief that good matcha should be accessible anywhere in the world—and they maintain this belief by only importing products that meet the company’s standards for color, aroma, and flavor. Dr. Weil, a cofounder of the brand, prefers to start the day with matcha because he appreciates the matcha’s: Beautiful color. Aroma. Complex rich taste. “Also, I like the ritual of drinking matcha. It is a relaxing and meditative time for me and I know I’m getting the health benefits from it,” says Dr. Weil.

Cottonwood: You Are Welcome Here Cottonwood is the Heart of Arizona Wine Country. That isn’t just because of its perfectly situated location— close enough to Sedona, just down the road from Page Springs, or at the bottom of the hill from Jerome. It’s the location along the banks of the Verde River, the base of Mingus Mountain, and the center of high desert terrain with a unique climate, that makes a perfect mix for the science and art of winemaking.

less than two miles from Old Town. Here, explorers of all ages can hit the trails on foot, bike or horseback, and discover the terrain that has led many to call Cottonwood home for decades.

Cottonwood is home to nearly 10 wine tasting rooms; countless restaurants serving Arizona wines; and merchants with local product or Arizona produced goods that go hand-in-hand with wine, from cheeses to olive oil. Cottonwood is a place to explore, sip, and share in the art of winemaking.

With partners like Friends of the Verde River working to conserve and protect the Verde River, visitors are encouraged to explore the outdoors, enjoy the opportunities to recreate on the water, but also be mindful to take care of the precious resource flowing through the community. Leave no trace, take only photos to capture the memories!

And, wine isn’t the only reason visitors come to Cottonwood. Cottonwood has embraced the slogan: You Are Welcome Here, and for good reason. Visitors will find a state park—Dead Horse Ranch State Park—

Thanksgiving Thoughts, 2020

A

BY DAVID M. BROWN

A few weeks ago, I was enjoying a regular mid-afternoon walk to Trader Joe’s, a quarter-mile from my East Valley home. These grocery outings offer a break from the computer keyboard, and a few casual moments for centering and considering dinner. On my right wrist, worn like a hospital bracelet, was a standard-issue mask, blue and white.

While I approached the store, an unmasked associate stopped me, smiling.

inspire questions. Is that...? Is that person smiling? Is she stressed? Is he happy?

“So good to see you,” she said, clearly happy to be outside and breathing unobstructed. “We haven’t seen you without a mask for so long we forgot what you looked like,” she added.

This holiday season, in a year of so many challenges, let’s celebrate the blessings together: what brings us joy, what makes us glad, and what—as one of our 11 participants below says—“rocks our boat.”

Through this pandemic, we have forgotten what all of us look like and how important we are to each other; we have also learned how strengthening it is to actually see each other again. I look at eyes inside the grocery, and they

She completed a bachelor of fine arts from the University of Arizona. Her vision of a sustainable future drives the magazine, educating and inspiring readers to make eco-conscious choices for a healthy life and healthy planet. She and her husband, Mark, have two sons. I am thankful and blessed for my family and friends’ health during the times of COVID-19. Health is the most important aspect to anyone’s life. Life is a gift and so precious. I am grateful that many people are aware of the environment and healthy living. And, it is so important for everyone to connect with nature and want to eat healthy.

I asked some friends and business associates: “During these COVID-19 times and as we approach the holidays, what are you thankful for in terms of eco-consciousness and healthful living, the mission of Green Living magazine?”

When COVID-19 began, Mike McMahon and Green Living magazine co-founded the Fresh Food Collab with our partners, Amici Catering and Witnessing Nature in Food. We put together boxes, filled with some organic fresh fruits and vegetables, for those in need. We have also donated hot and cold meals to frontline hospital workers, domestic violence shelters and veterans. We have donated over 200,000 pounds of produce since late April of this year. For the Fresh Food Collab, we create videos for our sponsors and collaborators for our website to share with people who are getting back to work so that they can grow their own food, create a good mindset, eat healthy and live a good life. Our pillars of the movement are fighting food insecurity and food waste and fighting for food education. We have created a wonderful community of volunteers who have helped make this movement possible. I am filled with gratitude that I have been able to spend time with my family, friends and the Green Living team, preparing and handing out food boxes at schools and churches. I also feel very fortunate that I have had time to connect virtually with family, friends, clients, partners and teammates through COVID-19. I look forward to a bright future where everyone is connected to planet Earth, and a healthy living and mindset.

He and his wife, Ashley, have six children—five girls and a boy. One of the benefits from these COVID-19 times has been the focus on healthy living and the home. We have seen a huge increase in demand for homes that are more healthy, sustainable and efficient. Our clients have asked for better water and air filtration, storage, and more energy-efficient methods. This has been something very important to us over the years, and even more so now. Home offices, increased data capacity for at-home school children, and home gyms have been ever more important. Touchless faucets, self-cleaning toilets, and bidets are also so important, as are switches that turn on and off the lights automatically when you enter and exit the room to save energy. We are thankful for the continual innovation and accessibility of these items.

This pandemic has focused a lot of attention on not just how we live but how we choose to treat each other and the world around us. It makes me think we can and should do better.

Ron Steege Retired, Former Co-owner, La Casa Builders Scottsdale Steege retired from his luxury home design/build business five years ago and now paints Arizona landscapes and Biblical illuminations. He and wife, Jenn, love traveling the backroads of Arizona. Around Thanksgiving 2019, I made a commitment to make some major health and lifestyle changes and choices. I felt I owed it to my beautiful wife, Jenn, to become a better man, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Over the course of two decades, I had gained a significant amount of weight, which led to depression and negative thinking, and then to even more weight gain. I was desperate to change this. I needed a solution. I set my mind and my will to a plan of action. Although rather radical, I began an intense exercise program and started eating healthy small meals, which were interspersed with fasting. My exercise included power-walking 20-plus miles a week with 2-pound wrist weights and weightlifting two to three days a week. By the end of 2019 I had lost over 20 pounds. When the COVID-19 lockdown hit, I had already been following a regimen. The isolation imposed by the lockdown allowed me to focus more fully on my weight loss and fitness goals. With no other lifestyle distractions, my concentration on my goals was easier to maintain. By month seven into my program I had lost 60 pounds. I had regained my fitness, which in turn changed my negative thinking patterns and helped me restore my relationship with Jenn, my life partner in body, mind, soul and spirit. If I can do this at age 75, anyone can do it. This Thanksgiving and holiday season, I have so much to be grateful for... blessings upon blessings. Ken Edwins CEO, Wealth Manager Scottsdale Edwins lives in North Phoenix, where he cycles on the road and in the dirt regularly. A Southwest native, he has lived in Southern California, Las Vegas, and now for 26 years in Phoenix. He has a rescue dog, Max, a Cane Corso. He loves reading.

I began riding bikes when I was about 5–6 years old. I still remember my brother helping me take off the training wheels. That was an exciting moment. I graduated to a “big-boy bike” a few years later, which I promptly proceeded to crash into a fire hydrant. I bent the fork so badly that my father had to use a torch to heat the metal and make it soft so he could bend it back into shape. What really stood out for me about that experience was that my father went out and bought some spray paint so he could repair the paint that had been damaged by the repair job. He wanted me to continue to experience the “new” bike and not a damaged bike. He knew a complete repair would help me heal from my embarrassment. I continued to ride bikes as I got older. I’ve ridden my mountain bike with friends of mine for close to 20 years. What started as an informal get-together turned into 20 years of riding together through the country’s economic ups and downs, and life’s many personal and professional experiences. During this COVID-19 experience, I have had a number of friends and family members pass away, but not from COVID. I have continued to ride, mostly by myself, and my bikes have become places of joy, meditation, solitude, and grief. Life comes with you on the bike, and you can either ride with it or stay home. I will continue to ride through this COVID experience and live in the hope that the day comes when we have no more COVID infections and families are able to play, heal, and grieve together.

Scott is widely recognized as an expert on architecture in Arizona. And, azarchitecture/Jarson & Jarson Real Estate is an ecobroker™ certified firm. We were so fortunate to have architect Will Bruder design our home for us. His design was beautifully integrated into a desert site against the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. We had bought the lot, considered “unbuildable” by many because of its intensely natural setting. Our architect did not need any encouragement to make most of the location, placing the home with wonderful views and thoughtful orientation. The result has never been more noticeable and appreciated by us than in this trying time. We are grateful for the solace we derive from communing effortlessly with the desert. Every day brings news of new life, changing light, and calming vistas; this was always an ethic integrated into the design. Our home’s sheltered connection to the outdoors allows us wonderful views, all the while being protected with thoughtful overhangs built into the design. From the beginning, we selected a simple and natural palette of materials that add to our ease of living: Concrete and cork floors feel great underfoot and are comfortable to maintain, woods and fabric add to the texture. Consciously choosing the right materials has paid off; recycled denim insulates the interior walls, and low-VOC materials and high-efficiency HVAC keep it clean and comfortable.

COVID-19 has brought many things into sharp focus. What I miss and what I’m thankful for are the main ones.

Our lot is landscaped almost entirely with native plantings to restore and blend into our gentle hillside. We’ve never needed to apply any extreme methods to “control” our environment.

My daughter and her twin boys, Evan and Connor, have been living with me through COVID-19. I'm so grateful to have them close. The boys have learned how to prepare soil (gathering cow

The result is a carefree setting that invites nature in. It is a place of shelter, comfort and solace. There is seldom a day passes where we both don’t marvel at our good fortune. NOVEMBER 2020

We do feel that the home and location have had a positive impact on our health and outlook. I was able to meet an original owner of one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonian homes in New York. He built his home when he was in his 20's. Today, in his 90s, he attributes no small portion of his longevity and happiness to living in great architecture. Debbie and I could not concur more.

Tony Sutton Principal, Est Est Scottsdale Sutton completed a bachelor’s degree in interior design at the University of Illinois, working in Chicago first, then Arizona, including at Est Est in 1979; he bought the company in 1984. He has worked on projects in 40 states, plus Canada, Mexico, and Europe. His wife, Esther Boivin, also has an interior design firm. Sutton has three children and three grandchildren, and Boivin has a daughter, Alessandra, who lives with them.

Vivian Ayala Principal/Partner, Candelaria Design Associates Scottsdale Ayala joined Candelaria Design Associates (CDA) in July 2000 and became a partner in 2016. She lives in Phoenix with her 15-year-old daughter, Gabby. Founded in 1999, CDA designs luxury homes throughout Arizona, the California coast, and the Hamptons, New York. Founded on the principle that the design process needs to be a collaborative adventure, the firm works closely with its clients and design team to create homes and projects specifically for the needs and experience of the end-user. During this unprecedented time and as we all feel uneasy about what is happening around us, we have also found ourselves in what we call a new routine. I have found that in my constantly busy days at work and life, I am able now to take a break from the hectic daily living, look around and have a new perspective toward my surroundings and a look back at the pace I was living my life.

Esther and I are both very social. Prior to COVID-19, we attended many events regularly. We also enjoy our personal time, and COVID has given us an opportunity to be discerning with our schedules. While we used video conferencing prior to COVID, we are using it even more now.

Even with the unfortunate circumstances shadowing us these days, I have found myself taking a new appreciation at staying home, being healthy, cooking with my daughter, and enjoying the beautiful Arizona outdoor settings.

With remote access, there is less time spent traveling, resulting in more personal time and more free time to cook together and enjoy new recipes from scratch. We enjoy using our fresh herbs and citrus in our healthy cooking. Whole 30 has several favorites.

Amazingly, I found more time in my hands than usual when I realized how much driving I was doing every single day, a break Earth has also benefited from with reduced air pollution. I am thankful to build these new memories!

We utilize our outdoor “house,” having breakfast outside and using our outdoor spa and living space. We also spend more time at our house in Arkansas in the Ozark mountains of the North: 200-plus acres of mountains, fields, garden area, a stream and a fishing pond. Hiking trails within a diverse hardwood forest allow access to remote areas of the property with abundant wildlife. We have enjoyed sharing it with friends, teaching them to fish, cook, throw axes and knives, shoot a bow and arrow, and use a chainsaw to harvest fallen trees from the trail. We sit on the front porch, enjoying the view and engaging in healthy conversation. We don’t watch TV or listen to the news. It’s a wonderful way to reboot your soul with some God time while hiking the trails. The best things in life are free. Spend time with those you love, doing what you enjoy, and make the most of each day God gives you!

Long walks with my dog in the early mornings and late evenings have become a very welcome new routine. Most Arizonans know there is ample healing available in our breathtaking sunrises and sunsets. These are now the backdrop for a twice-daily ritual that helps me process my thoughts and reflect on many blessings.

I am very thankful that my medical practice does not have to worry about whether “insurance will let me” order the tests that I need; I can simply recommend the treatments that I feel are in the patients’ best interests, and my patients can make the decision about which tests they are willing to pay for.

My walks have also allowed me to meet many neighbors who were never really on my radar before COVID. We wave and smile with delight in knowing that we’ll probably do the exact same thing again tomorrow. In fact, we look forward to it.

I am truly grateful that the health of my bank account does not depend on what the insurance companies will pay me.

From a professional perspective, I’m grateful to work in an industry where the long-term health and safety of our society is the primary mission. The pandemic is fraught with many unknowns, as pandemics tend to be, and I think it’s safe to say we were mostly caught unprepared. But, we know where our current energy choices will lead us, and we know how to avoid that through different decisions. I’m thankful every day that I get to have that kind of impact on future generations, especially now.

She spent the first 25 years in emergency medicine and the next 25 moving beyond conventional allopathic medicine into functional, nutritional, Oriental, and bioenergetic medicine and acupuncture. She has a practice of integrative medicine in Scottsdale and is convinced that people who feel unwell have a reason for that feeling, and that reason can be identified and treated.

I am thankful that I finally have an office staff who are dedicated, loyal, honest, and loving, who care about our patients almost as much as they care about their own families. I am thankful that most of my new patients have done their homework and made a decision to get healthier before they come to see me. Many of my patients have already moved to healthy food choices: organic, non-genetically modified, more plant-based foods, less animal-based. I am thankful that they have taken that first crucial step toward health. I am thankful that my patients come to me voluntarily, expecting to work hard to restore their health. Many have investigated their symptoms online, most come in with a list of conditions they have questions about or would like to rule out. Many bring in articles from the medical literature to discuss with me. I am thankful that these patients care enough about their health to take an active part in the journey. I am beyond thankful that my patients have made the decision to move forward and I am honored to share their journey. I am 75 years old. I have no idea how long I will be physically present on this earth, but while I am still here, I am beyond grateful that the journey––while “interesting”–has also been fun. How many people get to do for a living what truly floats their boat?

Nothing the lesser creatures can teach us is more worth learning than the lesson of gladness. — Joseph Wood Krutch, The Great Chain of Life

So much of our world is living in fear these days–that they will become infected with the COVID virus, that they will die of the COVID virus, that someone near them is not wearing a mask and will infect them, that they are not wearing a mask and therefore they might get infected. Because of this fear, we are willing to give up even more of our freedoms–even to the point of accepting forced and involuntary vaccination, should that situation arise. I am thankful that I am alive today, and that tomorrow will surely take care of itself. I am thankful that I have my wits about me, that my body is in reasonable shape, that I am free of pharmaceutical medications, and that I am in good health. NOVEMBER 2020

Key to Strength Arizona-based company Charity Charms is supporting nonprofits through its new pandemic-proof Key to Strength campaign BY KYLEY WARREN

T

This year alone, nearly 89% of Arizona nonprofits have lost critical funding as a result of COVID-19. It’s a daunting statistic—one that’s made even more disconcerting considering the contributions of the state’s nonprofit sector, which is reported to contribute at least $22.4 billion to the state's economy, employ more than 324,000 people and generate at least $2.1 billion in annual sales, payroll and property taxes. But for Kay McDonald—founder of Charity Charms—she saw the setback as an opportunity to expand the efforts of her own business, so that it could act as a vehicle for struggling nonprofits and organizations of all types to creatively brand, fundraise, and engage with their communities.

"We saw the need for charities to have a turnkey program that was not hands-on for them, and that could be totally handled from start to finish,” says McDonald. “So, we came up with the item, we came up with the concept, and we came up with all of the marketing through a program that could do just that.” Since 2004, Charity Charms has worked to meet the growing demands for socially conscious brands—demands that have escalated even more throughout the pandemic. The company’s mission is to empower organizations and their supporters, employees, and customers through symbolic pieces that celebrate their impactful work, and act as tangible gifts to those who support them. This year, the company launched the Key to Strength program, an innovative marketing campaign that gives

nonprofits the opportunity to control their narrative and tell their authentic story through charming jewelry pieces. By design, the Key to Strength campaign is meant to inspire giving and promote brand recognition through multiple communication channels. “This was developed out of the need for struggling nonprofits and charities,” says McDonald. “Because these organizations couldn't have live, in-person events anymore, we knew that we needed to come up with something that would enhance their virtual events—specifically, something that could be mailed so that after the event is done, the memory would still live on.” The program starts with the corporation selecting a charity that aligns with their values. They then underwrite a custom program for the charity, and a 30-day virtual donation campaign is launched. Supporters are driven to virtual donation pages through the messaging shared through the various community channels. For each $50 donation, the donor will receive a thank you gift mailed to them by the Key to Strength team.

The memento includes a his & hers fob with the signature Key to Strength Charm that’s customized with the company and charity logo charms. The recycled, eco-friendly pewter charms are made in Phoenix and assembled by Seeds for Autism—another Phoenix nonprofit. The Charity Charms team believes that charms not only have the power to tell a story and bring people together through a common thread, but that they can also serve as an elegant way to market your brand. This November, the chosen partner for the Key to Strength program is Waste Not—an organization that’s working to support the nearly 1 in 6 Arizonans who experience food insecurity. The company develops food systems that help people and the planet flourish, by eliminating food waste and hunger through innovative community partnerships partnerships. Additionally, the corporate sponsor for the program is Sierra Signs. “What this pandemic has shown us is that we needed to think a little bit more outside the box and provide even more solutions to our clients than we previously did. We've turned into a completely full-circle company that does everything from the design and inception, all the way through the shipping and follow-up. And I think this new business model is really going to help nonprofits in the future.” For more information, visit www.charitycharms.com/wastenot. NOVEMBER 2020

SAVOR

Delivery

The Vegan Taste BY KYLEY WARREN

W

While the benefits that come with living a healthy, nutrition-based lifestyle are undeniable, the effort and attention to detail that’s often required complicates many people’s ability to actually maintain it. But The Vegan Taste—a Phoenix-based vegan meal subscription service developed by Executive Chef Jason Wyrick—is working to create contactless meal deliveries that are as easy as they are delicious and nutritional.

Chef Jason’s life was changed by going vegan, and actually reversing his diabetes in the process. The New York Times bestselling author became the first vegan chef to teach in the world-famous Le Cordon Bleu program at the Scottsdale Culinary Institute. And his belief that eating clean does not have to mean compromising on flavor is ingrained into every aspect of his business, The Vegan Taste.

The most refreshing element of The Vegan Taste is its everrotating menu of items. Each week, Chef Jason works with his team to curate a menu that strikes balance between familiar fare and adventurous cuisines from around the world. To ensure the full nutritional value of each dish, the menus are even approved by science advisor and Harvard professor of nutrition, P.K. Newby.

The concept is designed to make healthy eating not only tangible, but super affordable too.

The team at The Vegan Taste values full accessibility to healthier meal options—and that’s exactly what they provide through the service. In an effort to make things even simpler for consumers, they’ve designed a range of plan and pricing options, so that anyone can take advantage of the program, without having to make an extensive commitment. TRAVEL

Business

Exploring Ecotourism with Green Travel Queen BY ANGEL FUCHS

T

The past few years have been full of global enlightenment, with a heavy focus on sustainability and change. This intense interest has even modified the way people travel. Where people once looked at vacation as an escape from responsibility, some now see it as a way to further philanthropic growth and improve the places they visit, leaving no trace behind.

One Arizona company is taking ecotourism to levels beyond minimalist trips and glamping. Green Travel Queen is assisting its clients in booking unique life experiences. Danielle Coletto founded her agency nine years ago on a mission to change the way her clients vacation. Coletto began her career 13 years ago as an event planner specializing in destination weddings. Starting Green Travel Queen was born out of necessity. “I was always referring my wedding couples to a separate business for their flights and accommodations,” she says. “I

knew I could plan all the details, including the travel, so I started Green Travel Queen.” She still runs her event planning business, Events by Danielle, but she is now a one-stop shop, fueled by her passion to see the world and live as sustainably as possible, while helping others to do the same. Green Travel Queen takes pride in creating custom vacations through everything from transportation to lodging and service activities.

“People don't want to pick up trash or volunteer while they're on a trip,” Coletto says. “But I can plan excursions and outings that maintain the fun while helping out in the destination.” That could be as simple as bringing boxes of pencils to schools in Cuba, where they are much needed and appreciated, or planning visits to assist in schools or orphanages. “Any trip can be eco-conscious,” says Coletto. “Even if it's just bringing along a case of water for areas where it's not as readily available.” Coletto also wants travelers to know that even in the most pristine places, there are areas that need help within the surrounding communities and landscapes, leaving plenty of opportunity for an eco-conscious vacation experience. “In places like Bali, you see resorts with perfectly clean beaches, with crystal-clear water, and pure white sand, but nearby there are areas littered with bottles and a ton of trash,” she says. “People don't realize this reality and this is where we, as tourists, can help out and give back to the places we visit.” Eco-conscious travel can easily make a wonderful vacation into something wonderfully fulfilling and life-changing, and it can be as simple as how you pack. Coletto’s basic tips for planning an eco-friendly trip are:

PACK LIGHTLY Especially when flying. “The heavier the suitcase, the heavier the plane, the more fuel is used. Lightening the load truly does help reduce your carbon footprint.” RESEARCH AND PLAN Every destination has needs and programs for eco-tourism activities. Bring along a trash bag to help keep hiking trails or beaches clean and safe. Or pack some children's books to donate to area shelters. DRIVE If you can drive to your destination, do it, advises Coletto. It leaves a much smaller carbon footprint than flying. Driving is also a great way to see and explore more and bond with traveling companions. Coletto also advises travelers to verify their accommodations are green certified. “Find a hotel that is eco-conscious or has green certifications,” she advises. “Most hotels will make mention of that on their websites.”

She’s GREEN He’s GREEN BY JENNIFER & JOHN BURKHART

Shelf-Stable Foods Ever have those blah days where you just don't feel like cooking? Yeah, us too. More so lately than we'd like to admit. Thankfully, it's possible to still eat somewhat healthy with convenient, shelf-stable meals. Let's see how some of those fared in this month's reviews.

Wild Planet

The Coconut Cult

Tasty Bite

Wild Sockeye Salmon, canned

Probiotic Coconut Yogurt, Chocolate Mousse

Organic Indian Coconut Squash Dal

He said: This one is a clear case of wallet flex. Are you willing to shell out the extra money to eat a superior product? This is the best of the best when it comes to quality canned fish. Wild-caught in Alaskan waters, which means it's lowest in potential contamination, but when that little can slid across the register and $7.85 popped up, it was like getting kicked in the shins.

She said: If you're tired of the classic tuna fish sandwich, you need to try salmon instead. Look for wild-caught, or Pacific, and steer clear of anything farmed. Wild Planet sockeye made for a very flavorful (read: fishy) sandwich, but also very aromatic (read: open all the windows and light a candle). Our youngest walked around plugging his nose, ha! Worth it, it was delish.

He said: Okay, there's two different ways to approach this product. Mindset one: This is a tasty dessert with some probiotics in it. Mindset two: This is a gut health vitamin that sorta tastes like chocolate mousse. I recommend the latter. The only way this is a tasty dessert is if you can ignore the funky foot flavor, and if you can do that, you don't need to read product reviews ’cause you can eat anything.

She said: A darn delicious way to take your vitamins! Four simple ingredients blend perfectly to create a TART, mousse-like, non-dairy yogurt. Careful though, you'll need to start with small portions (8 servings per jar) to avoid any, ahem, extra bathroom time. Actually, as a parent, bring it on! That's the only place I can be alone. Kinda.

He Said: Oh man! Dal is my favorite food order when we get Indian. It's usually this rich, hearty smooth lentil dish that has a complex spice profile and just a little heat—perfect for dipping garlic naan in. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. But Tasty Bites' dal royally lacks in the spice department. Good for a quick fix, but nowhere near as good as the original.

She said: Dal is perfect for those chilly evenings, when you need a cozy, satisfying meal. Amazingly, this one is done in 60 seconds! It was creamy, slightly sweet with a hint of heat. It would be better with more chunky vegetables, but ya can't be too picky with a meal in a pouch. I recommend pairing this with white rice over the coconut rice pouch.

R.W. Knudsen Apple Cider & Spice He said: Well it's officially fall now, which means the nights get colder, the leaves change color, and the warm drinks go back into rotation. This apple cider was sugar and spice and everything nice. It will definitely warm your bones on a chilly fall evening.

She said: Yum! I love fall, and all the harvest goodies (yep, PSL gal here). Apple cider is a favorite around here, and our kiddos loved this one. It was tasty both hot and cold, but it could use more “spice.” So toss in some cloves and cinnamon when you warm this up on the stove. (And some rum on the side for the adults!)

FINAL

Word

Home Sweet Home Two mountain lion kittens, found in Simi Hills, California, have found a forever home at Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center in Arizona. The pair were left orphaned after biologists with the National Park Service discovered that their mother, a 2.5-year-old mountain lion, was dead. She died of rodenticide poisoning, a commonly used mouse and rat poison. Rodenticide is primarily used around homes to rid properties of rats and mice, but can have devastating results for other species—whatever animal eats the poisoned rat or mouse will suffer the same fate (pets and wildlife included).

According to the biologists, the then 3-week-old kittens would not have been able to survive in the wild without a mother. The kittens are now about 3 months old. They are adjusting to their new home, and have begun to show typical wild cat behavior: stalking, wrestling, and climbing. They come out of their shell more and more every day, and have even begun to develop their own personalities; the female is bolder while the male is laidback. “They are inseparable and a great comfort to each other,” says Linda Searles, director at the Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center. www.southwestwildlife.org
