NATIONAL PARTNERS WELCOME For many this won’t be your first year of competing at Greenpower, but it is safe to say it never gets boring. We have been taking part for eight years and they only get better each time! For those of you who are new, welcome to being an engineer! One of the things happening at this year’s finals are the Pit Lane talks and we look forward to getting the chance to speak with you about our technology and innovations as well as introducing some of our entry level talent so you can ask them anything you might want to know about engineering apprenticeships and graduate schemes. All that is left to say is to wish everybody safe and enjoyable racing, and we look forward to seeing you on the track! Olivia Whitlam Corporate Citizenship Manager Siemens UK

The IET is proud to be a sponsor of Greenpower as its aligns with our mission to inspire the next generation of engineers and technicians. Greenpower continues to develops the valuable skills that is so desperately needed both in the UK and globally to allow us to continue to engineer a better world for us all. Good luck to all of the teams involved in today’s race which will no doubt be a fantastic day. David Lakin Head of Education The Institution of Engineering and Technology 6

Ford Motor Company was delighted to move up to national level support of the Greenpower Education Trust in 2018, ‘The Year of Engineering’. Having hosted numerous race days as a regional sponsor over the past 18 years at our Dunton Technical Centre in Essex with around 50 Ford volunteers at each of these, we continue to see very positive benefits from our relationship with Greenpower through inspiring students to participate and Ford employees to go out into Essex schools and mentor the next generation of engineers through their involvement in the project. Throughout our long history with Greenpower, we have seen how the project engages the youngest generation of students and continues to inspire them as they progress through their academic development, nurturing and sustaining a passion for practical problem solving and shaping the engineering talent of the future. By actively supporting Greenpower, we look to champion a strong future for the automotive industry in the UK with young people that can achieve things that exceed what we think is possible today. If you are a part of a team competing today, you have already demonstrated great engineering ability in your journey to get here. Good luck and we wish you all the very best for this unique event and in your future engineering activities! Roger Ratley Electrified Powertrain Engineering Manager Europe Ford Motor Company

INTRODUCING GREENPOWER About Greenpower

Greenpower Education Trust inspires young people aged 9-25 to excel in science, technology, engineering and Maths, through a unique challenge - To design, build, and race an electric car.

IET Formula Goblin age 9 to 11

The Goblin Kit Car is a great introduction to STEM for primary school children, they get hands on assembling the car and compete in slaloms, sprints, and drag races at events.

IET Formula 24 age 11 to 16

In F24, teams have more freedom to design and build their Kit Cars or scratch builds, and students develop their STEM skills. Regional heats feature two 90 minute races requiring 3 drivers, with an International Final at the end of the season. 8

IET Formula 24+ age 16-25

F24+ is a great project as a gateway to a STEM career, and for furthering employability skills. Races are an hour long, and the category is ran as a championship with each teams 2 best results in heats, and their result in the final counting.

GREENPOWER’S 20th ANNIVERSARY Throughout 2019 Greenpower will be celebrating its 20th anniversary. Having started from a single race at Goodwood in 1999, it has grown to a truly international programme with teams in every continent, and numerous licenses operating across the globe. Gathering of Goblins 21st July 2019 The historic Goodwood Motor Circuit is once again our venue of choice for the end of year International Gathering of Goblins. This is an opportunity to give children who have been involved in the design and building of their IET Formula Goblin kit cars a chance to proudly display their achievements in a wonderful setting.

is the timed Sprint around the circuit’s Chicane. The afternoon also gives one lucky child from each team the chance to race an entire lap of the 2.4 mile circuit – “The lap of Champions”. Proceeding the event will be a grand prize giving.

Greenpower International Finals 17th October 2019 The 2019 International Finals will be held exactly 20 years on from when it all started on the 17th October 1999. To add to the excitement it will be held at the home of British motorsport, Silverstone.

This will award prizes for the top three cars in each of the four events plus additional awards, which celebrate the multiple aspects of the project.

Goodwood Heat Goodwood Heat 30th June 2019 A spectacular day of racing at Greenpower’s spiritual home as we The Gathering gives all drivers the chance welcome teams to our largest regional to race the familiar Drag and Slalom heat – Usually a sweltering day for teams courses, but also, unique to Goodwood so be sure to bring the sun cream! 11

made by the group based on theory, research and practical experience. Although there was a car (Banchory Bazinga) remaining from 2015, it was decided to construct a new car using salvage parts such as motor, batteries and wheels.

Banchory Academy last participated in There was a lot of talk and very little the 2015 Greenpower race and then took progress over the first few months. a break. Eventually, a strong chassis was constructed from rectangular section In late 2017 the Academy contacted aluminium. The students decided to call Banchory Rotary Club to ask if any the car “50 Shade of Green” and the members would be prepared to act as Academy provided £1,500 of budget to mentors and four retired professionals cover the project. (3 ex-oil industry engineers and a petrophysicist) signed up. Workshop The 2018 team ran the car at Alford sessions were held weekly during school last year but it was evident that it fell time and four pupils were chosen to form well short of the required performance, a team. The main brief was to educate, averaging just 11.8mph and attaining just engage and enthuse this group of nonunder 18 miles distance. academic students. track testing and redesign of key components. The students have learned a whole new range of skills, have participated in all aspects of the project from concept, through design, construction, testing, data logging, analysis and improvement. They have created a strong team spirit, have matured and have been part of a technically challenging mission. Some may decide to become engineers. Some not. But the experience is positively impacting on other aspects of their academic and practical education.

Long-term Vision.

TAQA is committed to a safe and successful future in the UK North Sea. We are once again proud sponsors of the Grampian heat of the national Greenpower competition. TAQA recognises that the future of the oil and gas industry relies on a skilled workforce, so it’s important that, from a young age, children get a better understanding of how subjects such as technology and engineering might be applied in ‘real life’. Many of our employees volunteer to help both prior to and during the regional event, sharing their valuable skills, knowledge and time with the young people involved, as they undertake a yearlong journey to design, build and then race their electric cars. Best of luck to all those racing their cars over the weekend.

CASE STUDY Whitehills School

After experiencing the Green power event at Alford last year and seeing how much my daughter and her friends got out of the experience, we thought it would be great for the kids at Whitehills to have a go. Telling the primary 6’s about the opportunity was very exciting as their energy and interest in the project and competitive spirit was obvious straight away. The children had to fill out applications explaining what they could bring to the adventure. It was hard to pick but with some deliberation, our team of 10 was selected. Then after an anxious wait, reality struck when some large cardboard boxes arrived at school and we then realised the 18

massive task ahead. This challenge was heightened by the cars late arrival just before Easter. One of our team slogans being, ‘It was a slow start but we got there in the end.’ However our quest to take part was helped along by Kevin, whose enthusiasm for the event was infectious. Kevin’s team from MacDuff had won the Alford event last year and he was keen to get other schools in the area involved to encourage healthy competition and local practice events. The build process was a learning opportunity for all. Fortunately we had expert help from Kevin, Malcolm and some parent helpers to guide the kids and teachers through the build. Eventually, after 100’s of bolts and screws being ratcheted into place and a great deal of thinking about design the car was ready to race. The look of excitement on the children’s faces was priceless the first time they got to drive. But this was not without extra excitement too when the drive belt loosened and brake pads went flying off

mid drive! On the 31st of May the children had to opportunity to race with the other local schools at Macduff School. It was a fantastic day where many of our team conquered there fears and took on the challenge of slalom and sprint racing. It was great to see the delight on their faces of their achievements and to see their other motto of ‘Kind but confident’, shining through. We are all even more excited about race day on the 15th June. We can’t wait! Go Team Whitehills!!

GOBLIN AWARDS Slalom 1st, 2nd, 3rd Drag 1st, 2nd, 3rd Sprint 1st, 2nd, 3rd To reflect the work that has gone in to designing and building the cars, Greenpower presents additional awards to the teams to reward excellence in design and engineering, sustainability and team ethos. Best Bodywork This is judged by the level of skill and creativity shown by the students in creating the bodywork for their Goblin. Sometimes this may be for excellent engineering concepts (aerodynamics, weight) or can be for artistic flair.

20

Greenest Bodywork With everything from cars woven out of used carrier bags to a body made entirely from a damaged recycling wheely bin, teams really pull out all the stops in an attempt to win this popular award. Check out the cars in the paddocks and see who you think deserves this year’s award! Best Presented Team This is for the team that looks, sounds and works like a team! Not necessarily the ones with the snazzy race overalls but the ones that have taken pride in their appearance, are polite and helpful and work well together when changing drivers or moving between events. Portfolio Award The Portfolio was introduced to let us see how much work the teams have contributed to the project every year. It is important that the children actually get to build the car and this is a great way of having

this documented. The Portfolio can also reflect the additional work the children have undertaken to support the car such as fundraising and report writing. Spirit of Greenpower At every event there is either a team that has encountered difficulties, a team who have a team member lacking in confidence that they support or a team who help out others with the loan of tools or equipment. Overall they embody the team spirit and positive attitude that has made teachers rate Greenpower so highly for team work.

next day and got a tour, it was fun! We even managed to lock Kai in a cell!

Then the next day we had a team building trip to Cluny Clays and we took part in more activities.

Blue Light Fifers

We are Glenrothes high schools first F24 team. We work alongside police Scotland, our School Campus Officer (Ross Fisher), our Family Support Worker (Karen Reid) and our Cowdenbeath Community Team (Barry smith, Gary Chrystal). We have 6 team members: Luci Fraser, Brandon Bisset, Joseph Doidge, Harry Hays, Kai Herd and Sarah Boyd. Our programme has been designed to not only include the build of our car, but also to teach us important life skills including how to keep safe online, first aid and other topics that are important in the area we live. Week 1 We scrapped the frame for our car and spent time getting to know each other by playing team building games. Then we went to levenmouth police station the

Week 3 We watched a missing persons film then continued to build our car.

Week 2 We went to brag and had an input from Sacro , we learned about the consequences of getting charged and all about the youth justice system. Then we started our build!

The next day we visited a local company called Marvent who helped us make the bodywork for our car.

Week 4 We put the wheels on our car!! Then we went on a dog walk to end the day.

it worked! We all got our first shot at driving it, this was an amazing feeling as we could see how far we had come as a team.

We then started the body work design, this was really tricky!

Week 7 Luci designed our team logo and it was turned into an amazing real life logo by a tattoo artist so we went to say thank you!

We visited Atlantic Embroidery as we decided to design team hoodies.

Then we done some final prepping the day before race day

We practiced for the last time and invited the PoPo Cops to come along. Week 6 We finished wrapping the car and we were all really happy with the look. This was the first time we tried the car – and 22

We made our pit sign and tried on our team overalls. Captin Seath Memorial Fund came and taught us CPR!

Week 5 We had Pancake Day! Clued-Up came and we had a drugs and alcohol input.

Week 8 Race week!

Race Day We went to Heat A at East Fortune and

Event on 7th June as a team. Our job is to serve tea and coffee. We have also been practicing and we are getting ready for the next race at Alford on 14th June…… BRING IT ON!

it was amazing! There were so may other cars there and we met loads of new people. It was interesting to hear how other teams had designed their car and on the day we won the portfolio awards which was fantastic! Once we returned back to school we met as a team as we knew we didn’t want the programme to end, we decided to keep the team going and we continued to practice together at the school. We couldn’t believe it when Karen got an email to say we were awarded Best Newcomer! None of us have ever managed to get a trophy in the school

cabinet and now we have 2! This made us feel really proud and we are going to try and win more to make the school proud. We love being part of F24 and we are going to the volunteer at the Goblin
