FOREWORD Advancing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education is a critical focus for Lockheed Martin. We know first-hand the importance of educating our young people in these areas. Our future success — and our country’s technological advantage — depend on a constant supply of highly trained, highly capable technical talent. We believe strongly that advancing STEM education requires collaboration among industry, educators, policy makers and families. As an industry leader, Lockheed Martin globally has an employee population that includes 49,000 engineers, scientists and IT professionals and we are committed to working to develop programmes that educate and inspire tomorrow’s scientists, engineers and mathematicians.
4
To help address these challenges and strengthen the UK workforce pipeline, Lockheed Martin is proud to partner with Greenpower, who provide a range of practical, educational engineering challenges which fulfil our mission and encompass all of our values. We wish all of the participants luck at the Goblin Event this weekend!

INTRODUCING GREENPOWER About Greenpower
Greenpower Education Trust inspires young people aged 9-25 to excel in science, technology, engineering and Maths, through a unique challenge - To design, build, and race an electric car.
IET Formula Goblin age 9 to 11
The Goblin Kit Car is a great introduction to STEM for primary school children, they get hands on assembling the car and compete in slaloms, sprints, and drag races at events.
IET Formula 24 age 11 to 16
In F24, teams have more freedom to design and build their Kit Cars or scratch builds, and students develop their STEM skills. Regional heats feature two 90 minute races requiring 3 drivers, with an International Final at the end of the season. 8
IET Formula 24+ age 16-25
F24+ is a great project as a gateway to a STEM career, and for furthering employability skills. Races are an hour long, and the category is ran as a championship with each teams 2 best results in heats, and their result in the final counting.
At the heart of every great company are great people Every day, across Lockheed Martin, our 100,000 employees come to work with one focus – our customers’missions. Whether it‘s protecting citizens or advancing the boundaries of science, these missions are some of the most important and challenging in the world. We bring an unwavering commitment to help our customers succeed, and it’s that sense of purpose and opportunity to make a difference in the world that drives us every day. TM

GREENPOWER’S 20th ANNIVERSARY Throughout 2019 Greenpower will be celebrating its 20th anniversary. Having started from a single race at Goodwood in 1999, it has grown to a truly international programme with teams in every continent, and numerous licenses operating across the globe.
Hull Street Race 28th April 2019
Following a change in the Road Traffic Act, it is now possible to run a motorsport event on the roads. Greenpower have obtained a permit from Motorsport UK, and the necessary licenses to run this first of its kind race event, taking place in the Queens Gardens area of Hull on the 28th of April 2019. Cars built by teams of students from Hull will take to the circuit attempting to be crowned the best young engineers and racers in the region, take home 11
silverware, and qualify for the prestigious international finals of the 2019 season.
Proceeding the event will be a grand prize giving.
Gathering of Goblins 21st July 2019
This will award prizes for the top three cars in each of the four events plus additional awards, which celebrate the multiple aspects of the project.
The historic Goodwood Motor Circuit is once again our venue of choice for the end of year International Gathering of Goblins. This is an opportunity to give children who have been involved in the design and building of their IET Formula Goblin kit cars a chance to proudly display their achievements in a wonderful setting.
The Gathering gives all drivers the chance to race the familiar Drag and Slalom courses, but also, unique to Goodwood is the timed Sprint around the circuit’s Chicane. The afternoon also gives one lucky child from each team the chance to race an entire lap of the 2.4 mile circuit – “The lap of Champions”.
Goodwood Heat Goodwood Heat – 30th June 2019
A spectacular day of racing at Greenpower’s spiritual home as we welcome teams to our largest regional heat – Usually a sweltering day for teams so be sure to bring the sun cream!
Greenpower International Finals – 17th October 2019
The 2019 International Finals will be held exactly 20 years on from when it all started on the 17th October 1999. To add to the excitement it will be held at the home of British motorsport, Silverstone.
CASE STUDY
Rose Hill Motorsport Driving Ambition since 2012
Our Greenpower journey began when the Rose Hill School Parent Association purchased a Goblin electric car. Pupils built the car during STEM Club on a Friday afterschool. The Red Devil car was finished on a Friday and raced at the ‘Gathering of the Goblin’s on the Sunday! Staff, parents and pupils were hooked and the club took off, we were offered a second hand car, the Blue Demon. STEM Club is thriving and we have over 40 pupils signed up – we split them into groups of 8-10 per half term. Three members of staff, an ex-parent and an expupil help run the club. At the start of the academic year the pupils dismantle one of the cars and the other one is used for driver training. Each Friday, weather permitting, we have half a group building or maintaining a car in the DT workshop whilst the other half are honing their driving skills on the AstroTurf.
12
We have produced an engineering logbook that the pupils complete each week detailing what they have learnt, what tools they have used or how well they have driven. There is a ‘name the tool’ quiz and ‘name the parts of a Goblin’ in the engineering log books that the pupils can fill in as they develop skills and knowledge over time. Rose Hill School is a prep school and so has pupils up to Year 8. To continue with the work from the Goblins we have purchased a F24, V12 Warrior. Through the use of the Goblins and F24 our pupils develop a better understanding of STEM subjects. Both class of cars are used in DT and science lessons. This rich opportunity allows pupils to engage in the subject where they have previously struggled and it helps pupils to grasp concepts that would be hard to visualise otherwise. The Greenpower projects have allowed all pupils no matter gender, academic ability or sporting prowess to engage in a fun, stimulating and worthwhile activity and take it around the South of England showing off what they have achieved.

CASE STUDY Newick CoE Primary New Quick Newick?
New team, new bodywork, a renewed Newick Engineering Club. Fired up on last year’s success we were itching to be bigger and better, well maybe not bigger - quality over quantity - but certainly better! To fulfil this rather big ask we required a healthier budget as our elderly karts were suffering from breathless batteries and fatigued motors. So, once we’d concluded all the introductions and let the remaining members from last year wax lyrical on the highs and lows of the 2018 season, it was full steam ahead to put pen to paper and attract sponsors. Our knights in shining armour (coming in the form of several local businesses, in addition to a lucrative cake sale thanks to our Star Bakers) enabled us to inject life back into Rebellion, our larger kart, with a new motor and batteries. Meanwhile, ideas for designs were coming 16
thick and fast; Icarus’ kart of feathers and Datacomms’ tangled bodywork of cables were outvoted by ‘Weaving u Behind’ a willow woven kart highlighting the plight of deforestation and ‘Rebellion’ which symbolises the light and dark side of our world. During Engineering Club, the students worked in rotation on reducing the karts to ‘bits’, weighing, replacing and rebuilding; constructing the bodywork (all participated in the wonderful ancient craft of willow weaving); sketching designs, composing driver profiles, diary entries for the portfolios and learning about engineering drawings, all led by our team of dedicated parents.
But the icing on the cake was delivered when the clouds finally parted at the beginning of February and driver practice was mostly greeted with squeals of excitement, a little trepidation initially for some, but this was soon replaced with cries of ‘more’! So here we are, ready for more…
17
AWARDS Slalom 1st, 2nd, 3rd Drag 1st, 2nd, 3rd Sprint 1st, 2nd, 3rd To reflect the work that has gone in to designing and building the cars, Greenpower presents additional awards to the teams to reward excellence in design and engineering, sustainability and team ethos. Best Bodywork This is judged by the level of skill and creativity shown by the students in creating the bodywork for their Goblin. Sometimes this may be for excellent engineering concepts (aerodynamics, weight) or can be for artistic flair.
18
Greenest Bodywork With everything from cars woven out of used carrier bags to a body made entirely from a damaged recycling wheely bin, teams really pull out all the stops in an attempt to win this popular award. Check out the cars in the paddocks and see who you think deserves this year’s award! Best Presented Team This is for the team that looks, sounds and works like a team! Not necessarily the ones with the snazzy race overalls but the ones that have taken pride in their appearance, are polite and helpful and work well together when changing drivers or moving between events. Portfolio Award The Portfolio was introduced to let us see how much work the teams have contributed to the project every year. It is important that the children actually get to build the car and this is a great way of having this documented. The Portfolio can also reflect the additional work the children have undertaken to support the car such as fundraising and report writing.
19
Spirit of Greenpower At every event there is either a team that has encountered difficulties, a team who have a team member lacking in confidence that they support or a team who help out others with the loan of tools or equipment. Overall they embody the team spirit and positive attitude that has made teachers rate Greenpower so highly for team work.
