WELCOME PAUL VAN VEGGEL

FOREWORD BBL BATTERIES

I’d like to welcome you all to Greenpower Educational Trust’s 2018 International Final on behalf of all of us at Greenpower.

“BBL Batteries are very proud, once again, to sponsor the Greenpower International Final Program 2018. Commenting on their year on year support, Graham Bultitude, Managing Director of BBL Batteries said:

This is my first year as Chief Executive of Greenpower and in the short time I’ve been with the trust I’ve been amazed with the enthusiasm, dedication and hard work of all of the participants. The final is the showcase of their incredible efforts and I’m sure that all that attend will be truly impressed with what they have managed to achieve and the spirit of how they have approached the challenge of getting to today. For all of the team members, the payoff of their journey to participating here today will be in the years to come when they turn the experience of their project to design, build and race an electric car into future STEM studies and careers. The most inspirational part of my new job is the stories I receive from people who credit Greenpower with being a big part of their success in life by giving them the skills and confidence to forge a technical career. I am certain that in the years to come I will receive many such messages from those here today.

“The Greenpower Education Trust inspires young people to excel in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) through a unique challenge: to design, build and race an electric car. We supply Yuasa batteries as power sources for all the cars and watching the teams of young men and ladies build and race the most fantastic racing cars is inspiring. Once again, we are really looking forward to this year’s final.” BBL Batteries, the UK’s most diverse stockist, supplier and distributor of premium stored energy products have partnered with Yuasa since 1981 offering Yuasa batteries as their premium battery brand, servicing a multitude of sectors and powering tomorrow’s world.”

An event like today would be impossible without the help from the greater Greenpower family of partners, sponsors, staff and volunteers and I would like to thank them all for giving us their support and time to be part of this incredible event and for being a large part of why Greenpower is such a successful and rewarding programme for all of those involved. PARTNERS WELCOME Siemens UK Welcome to the International Final. For many this won’t be your first year of competing at Greenpower, but it is safe to say it never gets boring. We have been taking part for eight years and they only get better each time! For those of you who are new, welcome to being an engineer! One of the things happening at this year’s finals are the Pit Lane talks and we look forward to getting the chance to speak with you about our technology and innovations as well as introducing some of our entry level talent so you can ask them anything you might want to know about engineering apprenticeships and graduate schemes. All that is left to say is to wish everybody safe and enjoyable racing, and we look forward to seeing you on the track!

The Institution of Engineering and Technology The IET has been a proud sponsor of Greenpower for many years as its passion and enthusiasm to inspire the next generation of engineers and technicians strongly aligns with ours. Greenpower is a programme which develops the valuable skills that is so desperately needed both in the UK and globally to allow us to continue to engineer a better world for us all. Congratulations and good luck to all of the teams involved in today’s International Final and we look forward to being part of what will no doubt be a fantastic day.

Ford Motor Company Ford Motor Company is delighted to have moved up to national level support of the Greenpower Education Trust during 2018, ‘The Year of Engineering’. Having hosted numerous race days as a regional sponsor over the past 17 years at our Dunton Technical Centre in Essex with around 50 Ford volunteers at each of these, we have seen how Greenpower has inspired the students to participate and Ford employees to go out into Essex schools and mentor the next generation of engineers through their involvement in the project.

BMW i BMW i are delighted to continue to support Greenpower as national automotive partner for 2018 and to be able to offer supporters the chance to test drive the electric BMW i3 at selected Greenpower events. The BMW i3 and i8 are built from the ground up with sustainable mobility and sheer driving enjoyment at the heart and so we have a lot in common with the cars the teams here have created.

Education

Greenpower Education Trust - International Final 2018

Throughout our long history with Greenpower, we have seen how the project engages the youngest generation of students and continues to inspire them as they progress through their academic development, nurturing and sustaining a passion for practical problem solving and shaping the engineering talent of the future. By proudly supporting Greenpower, we look to champion a strong future for the industry with young people that can achieve things that exceed what we think is possible today. If you are a part of a team competing in the final you have already demonstrated great engineering ability in your journey to get here. Good luck and we wish you all the very best for the event and in your future engineering activities! Roger Ratley Electrified Powertrain Engineering Manager, Europe Ford Motor Company

FIVE WAYS RACING TEAM ARE GO, GO, GO AT ROCKINGHAM HEAT This year Five Ways were very fortunate to win a grant from Siemens to part fund an electric powered car to participate in the Greenpower programme. The Greenpower Education Trust is a UK based charity which gets young people enthusiastic about science and engineering by challenging them to design, build and race an electric car. In February 2018 students from year 8 and year 9 were invited to join the project and begin our very first Greenpower team.

Team from left to right: Anu Boswell, Nico Singh, Inri Osmani, Hari Patel, Ali Ellabban, Izaac Moore, Sophie Inkpen, Emily Pearson, (Mr Plimmer), Portia Eccleston, In the car: Raja Singh Sidhu, Jayni Makwana, Kiren Ali, Rebecca Power, (Miss Beeson) (Absent: Hanisha Tahli and Fynn Rose) Car transport supported by Mr Kirby Quotes from the team: Mr Plimmer – “An awesome day, superbly organised and a fantastic opportunity for students to experience technology and engineering in the motorsport industry at a real racing circuit!” Sophie – “Really enjoyed the day, it was a great experience and I would love to do it again.” Anu – “It was great and a nice experience. Lots of fun, would definitely recommend.” Raja – “Its great fun being in a team and racing the car.” Izaac – “A really well organised race day with friendly staff. Great being part of a team.”

During the following 3 months students set about constructing the kit and designing the body for the chassis. The students realised that body and appearance was critical to the aerodynamics and performance of the car. The team worked to an incredibly tight time schedule and were able to finish the car and complete some pre-race testing at school ready for their first ever race at Rockingham Speedway Race Circuit in July. The day consisted of two races against 55 other schools and universities in England, the team entered both races with high hopes. The first race started well with the officially named Feeney-mobile staying in a steady position of 41st by a lead from Sophie Inkpen in year 8. However, in a turn of events the feeney-mobile broke down and the team spent most of the race fixing it. The last few laps of the first race were finished by Rebecca Power and the team finished in a staggering position of... 50th. Two hours passed as the team fixed most of the issues surrounding the feeney-mobile and the second race began. Another amazing start by Hari Patel kept the team in a steady lead, but with a crash that happened on the track between 3 other racers, the second race was shortened due to a 20 minute stop. After the crash Inri Osmani and Isacc Moore boosted the teams lead by a few places, with Isaac even getting the team’s personal best time around the track of 4 minutes and 27 seconds. A strong finish from Raja SinghSindu resulted in 36th place in the second race. It was fantastic to see the team finish ahead of other schools with much more experience and highly developed cars. The team would like to give a special thank you to Mr Plimmer and Miss Beeson for aiding the team over the past 3 months in building the car and supporting them on the day. The team looks forward to another race in October and they will be hard at work modifying the Feeney-mobile to its maximum potential.

PATRONS The Ultimate Driving Machine

“The thing that stands out for me about the finals of Greenpower is the excitement and enthusiasm of all the participants. Months of preparation of their beloved race cars all comes to fruition at Rockingham and, win or lose, it’s an experience that will live with them forever.” David Richards CBE “We have a serious shortage of engineers in UK industry. Currently it is estimated that we have an annual shortfall of over 59,000 engineers of all disciplines and the situation is getting worse. One of the solutions is to inspire and motivate children of all social backgrounds to consider a career in engineering. Greenpower is an exciting organisation dedicated to do exactly this – inspire, motivate and encourage youngsters to consider a career which is richly rewarding in so many ways. I would like to congratulate all the teams for qualifying for this years final and wish them all every success for their future. “ Alan Cook, CBE DSc “We absolutely love supporting Greenpower at Goodwood, as we see it as an incredibly important and inspirational platform. We are also very, very proud to have played a part in it since the beginning. All the very best of luck to all the contestants and many congratulations to you all for getting to this International Final.” The Duke of Richmond and Gordon a

GREENPOWER’S NEW CEO PAUL VAN VEGGEL What inspired you to join Greenpower? I have spent the last 20 or so years as an engineer and manager in the Formula 1 motorsport industry and I was looking for something to use the knowledge and skills I’ve acquired to make a real difference. I couldn’t have found a more worthwhile fit than Greenpower, inspiring young people to excel and have a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths is a cause that I’ve always been very passionate about. What did you do before Greenpower? I started in industrial Research and Development and then worked in various Formula 1 teams including British American Racing, Jaguar Racing and Red Bull Racing. I had a few roles, but they have mostly centred around technical and operational management, leading teams of varied specialists in fields such as aerodynamics, whist running facilities and R&D projects at the same time. In short, a little bit of everything and everything that comprises Greenpower.

What are you most looking forward to? That’s a simple answer, making a difference to the direction that students of all ages take. As an engineer, contributing to closing the skills gap and seeing students undertake truly interesting projects, gaining valuable life skills and forging technical careers is really rewarding. Of course, they have great fun too especially at the events which I’m really looking forward to being a part of. Where do you see Greenpower going? In 2019 we will be celebrating our 20th year, with more teams entering and more events year on year so the answer is, upwards! is a

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED We need Volunteers like you to help at Events! We rely on over 600 volunteers each year to help us run our race events all over the UK. If you can spare a day of your time we’d love to have your help. You don’t need any experience or expertise as we have a briefing for volunteers at the beginning of each event so you know exactly what you’re doing for the day. Volunteering at Greenpower is lots of fun, and can be very varied. From helping at registration to scrutineering, there really is a job for everyone. If you are a parent, teacher, friend, relative or spectator and interested in volunteering at a Greenpower event. Please get in touch as we would love to hear from you. Lunch will be provided to volunteers at every event as a way of saying thank you for your support. We couldn’t do it without you! If you would like more information please contact: E: info@greenpower.co.uk T: 01243 552305

I’ve been volunteering with Greenpower for a number of years now and I genuinely believe that Greenpower makes both a difference to the teams interest and understanding of STEM subjects, but also to their social skills. In a world dominated by online social interactions, the opportunities presented by racing with Greenpower Trust afford the teams a chance to develop their teamwork, presentation skills and confidence. All key skills in the world today that cannot easily be taught. As for volunteering, on Race days I am involved in everything from scrutineering the cars, running safety checks in the pits to answering questions about the cars or my career. From a mercenary point of view Greenpower supports my CPD, but more importantly, I have found volunteering with the Greenpower family to be rewarding, fun and probably the best volunteering experience I am involved with. To anyone thinking “shall I get involved?”, my answer is most definitely yes. Julian ‘Taz’ Bond - Volunteer

ARTHUR TERRY CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE CASE STUDY In 2017 Arthur Terry School applied to become a Greenpower Centre of Excellence. After submitting our application, we were visited by Greenpower for a site visit and interview, and were subsequently awarded Centre of Excellence status. Having spent untold hours building close links with local organizations and companies, who have made very significant financial donations, we were very fortunate to have the funds to purchase two very comprehensive tool kits, which, along with our workshops, allow us to welcome other schools who bring their cars to us to use our facilities and equipment, and where we are able offer guidance and support in their own Greenpower journey. We have worked with Midlands based secondary schools in their construction of kit cars. A number of our Year 10 team members use this opportunity as their Duke of Edinburgh Award volunteering unit and, each week, assist a local primary school in the construction of two Greenpower Goblin cars. Our assistance has now spread much further afield, including assistance and support to a school in London after we met them at the 2018 Ford Dunton race. In the summer of 2017 we hosted a STEM day with our team members and Greenpower students from China, where they designed, built and tested air rocket cars, looking at both aerodynamic design and braking systems.

CENTRES OF EXCELLENCE Would your school or centre like to be the local facility and hub where you can help support local Greenpower teams? As a Greenpower Centre of Excellence you would be helping grow Greenpower and engage more young people through: • Providing Solid Edge CAD software capability to local teams • Supporting local teams with the design and build of their cars • Encouraging more teams to get involved • Providing a venue suitable to host conferences, build days and even race events If you would like more information please contact: E: info@greenpower.co.uk T: 01243 552305

We thoroughly enjoy our role as a Centre of Excellence, in particular our Y10 and Y12 students are given the opportunity to work with other teams, developing communication skills, self- confidence and many other vital soft skills. We would highly recommend applying to become a Centre of Excellence.

AMBASSADORS We are currently searching for Ambassadors.

I have been an Ambassador for 4 years and it has given me an opportunity to inspire future generations of potential engineers. The Greenpower Challenge is a fantastic way to get students thinking about not just the engineering behind the build but also all of the other aspects involved in a race team. This involves fund raising, design of the body and team colours to being responsible for making sure that they have everything with them on race day! But the most satisfying thing for me is seeing students who do not normally engage in class activities getting involved. Alan Slade, Scotland Ambassador

Greenpower is engrossing and enjoyable and provides high-quality experiences to all who are involved. As an ambassador I’ve had opportunities to create links – raising awareness of the project in my region and meeting all sorts of people who have helped us introduce Formula Goblin and, if all goes well over the next couple of months, F24 to Norfolk.

Greenpower STEM Ambassadors are volunteers who promote the project to schools in their area, support existing teams with technical or extra support for the build and helping them reach the target of hitting the race track. Ambassadors are crucial to the sustainable growth of Greenpower and the service we provide to schools and young people throughout the country. Your involvement can be entirely dependent on the time you are able to commit to the project and how much you want to do. Teams to find out if you have an ambassador in your local area check out the map on our website: https://www.greenpower.co.uk/volunteering#id-247 If you are interested in becoming a Greenpower Ambassador, please contact the office: info@greenpower.co.uk

This has demanded time and perseverance but has been highly rewarding. Knowing that pupils and students are getting hands-on experience of engineering, problem solving and teamwork at the races is well worth the effort. Matt Buck, Norfolk Ambassador
