WELCOME
PAUL VAN VEGGEL The Street Race is finally upon us! The build up to this event has seen an amazing display of hard work and dedication on the part of the teams involved, together with real enthusiasm to be a part of this momentous event. Every team should be proud of what they have achieved to get here today. The Hull event is the first ever closed electric street race and marks an important milestone in Greenpower’s development in inspiring future engineers and STEM subject enthusiasts. At this important time we would like to thank all those who have made our dream a reality and in particular our staff, ambassadors, volunteers, trustees, teams, and partners. Our season has already launched with some exciting events. A notable example was the Blyton Park test day where the positive attitude of competitors showed their determination to overcome any obstacles in order to ensure that their drivers were ready for the Street Race. It was gratifying to witness the enthusiasm and team spirit! The achievement of getting to the Street Race has already delivered substantial benefits for the individuals involved, before they even get to the track. Positive individual development has been noted in many aspects of our participants’ learning, not only in working as a team but also in areas like mechanical design, project planning, communication skills and electrical design. All of these skills will assist the team members in their future careers and inspire them in their ambitions. Here at Greenpower we wish every team the best of luck on the track – this is what all your hard work and driving training has prepared you for. Enjoy the races and have a great day!

GREEN PORT HULL PARTNERSHIP
On behalf of Hull City Council and Green Port Hull partners, we are delighted to be able to support Greenpower Education Trust and to play host to the UK’s first electric street race in our amazing city. Our vision is to ensure Hull and the East Riding is the renewables and low-carbon capital of the UK – and we are well on our way to achieving this goal. To achieve this, we need to encourage our young people to invest in their education and to engage in the STEM subjects of science, technology, engineering and maths to create the engineers of the future so a skilled and capable workforce continues to grow.
During the past two years, we have been working alongside Greenpower to roll out their highly successful electric kit car project across the Humber. Their ethos of teamwork creates an excellent route to inspire our young people to achieve their potential, creating the next generation of engineers. We are delighted to see that so many local school and youth teams, along with their business mentors, have taken this project to their heart and have built and designed the most amazing electric cars.
And a huge thank you to their mentors, supporters, sponsors and organisers!
Councillor Stephen Brady Leader of Hull City Council, on behalf of the Green Port Hull Partnership
We are proud to be part of the Hull Street Race and wish all the participating teams the very best of luck. Thank you to all the schools and colleges and youth groups for participating and embracing this challenge, providing a fabulous opportunity for their students.

INTRODUCING GREENPOWER About Greenpower
Greenpower Education Trust inspires young people aged 9-25 to excel in science, technology, engineering and maths, through a unique challenge - to design, build, and race an electric car.
IET Formula Goblin age 9 to 11
The Goblin Kit Car is a great introduction to STEM for primary school children, they get hands on assembling the car and compete in slaloms, sprints, and drag races at events.
IET Formula 24 age 11 to 16
In F24, teams have more freedom to design and build their Kit Cars or scratch builds, helping to develop their STEM skills. Regional heats feature two 90 minute races requiring 3 drivers, with an International Final at the end of the season. 10
IET Formula 24+ age 16-25
F24+ is a great project as a gateway to a STEM career, and for furthering employability skills. Races are an hour long, and the category is ran as a championship with each team’s two best results in heats, and their result in the final counting.

United to deliver lasting value
Investment, innovation and collaboration is consolidating the Humber as a major hub for offshore wind, not just in the UK but on a global scale.
As a global technology leader in wind energy, Siemens Gamesa is now preparing to manufacture even larger 81.5m blades in Hull, for its next generation 8MW turbines.
Early this year, components (including wind turbine blades made in Hull) set sail to Hornsea One, the World’s biggest offshore wind farm with 174 Siemens Gamesa turbines. It is already producing electricity and when fully operational is capable of powering well over one million UK homes.
Our support and involvement in the UK’s first electric car street race here in Hull is just one of the ways in which we are recognising and celebrating the Humber’s renewables credentials, champions and innovators.

CASE STUDY HEALING SCHOOL
Students from Healing school built the car two years ago at a local engineering facility called CATCH. This was for the first race in Hull which we won! The team ensured that as many pupils as possible were included in the beginning from Years 7 to 10. The pupils designed our car to have an aluminium body panel with a foam nosecone. The team hopes to develop the car in the near future but that is top secret! The pupils have gained a lot from this project, from learning how to work as a team and to manage their own schedules to how to assemble and repair the car, as well as acting in races with the appropriate etiquette. The challenge has not simply been about engineering, the team have also been working hard to develop their marketing skills and are currently building their communication 22
skills by presenting to both outside investors and each other. Healing Racers have been working hard to put our car together for the street race. They have met most weeks after school, tested different elements, practised pit stops and looked into how to care for our batteries more effectively. However, it hasn’t been plain sailing: we have had issues with everyone’s timetable and we may have broken some parts but the pupils have learnt from their mistakes
and put most things back together! Most importantly, there have been no accidents and pupils have learnt how to conduct the work safely and taught the younger and new members of the team. Healing Racers have been very grateful to everyone who has supported them both financially (MHI Vestas, HWC Group, Engineering World) and practically. We are especially grateful to Online Designs and Engineering who have given us so much time and practical support.

CASE STUDY TEAM MORPHEUS, HORNSEA SCHOOL
We are Team Morpheus at Hornsea School and Language College and we are going to explain a little about our car and team. The original team that built the car are now close to leaving school and we have taken on this amazing opportunity. The car was built using the kit provided and the shell by using carbon fibre to keep it as light as possible. This unbelievable opportunity is great for us as it will be a helpful addition to our CVs. We love the fact it brings us together as a team and gives us something to aspire to. As a bonus we had a STEM representative come in and do a short course with us, we also got to go to the leisure centre nearby to help with advertising and we get the experience of the thrill of the races. We have a number of sponsors including 24
Heald Engineering and Hornsea Lions. We prepared for the street race in a number of ways: we went to Blyton Park to choose our drivers and check the car was fully working in a racing environment; we have practised the driver changeover; we have established the team so we all have our own, equally important, roles and we have had the car out at school to learn more about how it works and how to maintain it. We meet every Tuesday for an hour after school to work on Morpheus and our other car Xenia, which is part of the Scratch Build category. We hope to see Xenia looking as good as Morpheus and running well in the future.

AN INTERVIEW WITH
PAUL VAN VEGGEL, GREENPOWER CEO What is it that Greenpower does and why does it matter?
Greenpower’s mission is to use the hook of motorsport to inspire young people into STEM careers. Addressing this skills shortage is good for the economy, good for the young people because these are skills in high demand and good for society because it will be the engineers who innovate to address some of societies greatest future challenges. “Engineering is at the heart of the UK’s economic success: it generates 23% of UK turnover, employs 5.6 million people and produces the majority of the nation’s exports. Yet engineering skills remain in short supply, with almost half of engineering employers reporting recruitment difficulties and the shortfall of engineering graduates and technicians estimated at as much as 59,000 annually” – Engineering UK 28
There are plenty of science education activities, what makes Greenpower so special? The scale and ambition of getting kids as young as 9 to build and race an actual car is unbelievable and I think this is what has helped Greenpower stand the test of time. The commitment to fair play and a strong sporting ethos has also ensured that no matter who you and what your resources are, you can line up on the grid for a fair competition. That diverse range of teams we have from all sorts of schools, youth groups makes for a truly inclusive and friendly atmosphere.
What is the effect of taking part on the young people?
For many of our younger competitors they will have no idea what an engineer does and this will be there first introduction to what engineers do. A young person’s sense of identity and what they are capable of starts to form in primary school and so by introducing them to the idea of engineering and other STEM subjects so early we are hoping to engage a wider group of potential future engineers. “You cannot be what you cannot see” Marie Wilson The Whitehouse project
What if they don’t really want to be engineers?
and belief in themselves has improved, their critical thinking and problem-solving skills have developed and their team work, communications and planning skills have developed. Another strong trend is that they have an improved perception of what engineering is and an increased interest is studying STEM subjects and pursuing a technical career, so even if they went into the challenge not really wanting to be an engineer, many come out inspired to be so!
What do your sponsors get from supporting Greenpower?
Aside from knowing that they have enabled Greenpower to change the outcomes of numerous young people, our sponsors are very active in supporting us and the participants directly. For example, many of our sponsors are incredibly generous with their staff’s time and assist by providing staff to mentor teams and advise them on getting the best out of their Greenpower project or to assist them technically. They really make a difference to young people who participate in Greenpower this way, but also importantly show them what a technical career actually looks like in the world of work by exposing them to real engineers from inspirational companies.
The nature of the challenge is such that the participants are developing vital workplace skills irrespective of their final career choices. When we survey our participants and their teachers on the difference undertaking the Greenpower challenge has made to them there are strong common themes: Their self-image 29

We competed in the Goblin Race in Hull as part of the City of Culture events and came first place in the region.
School Y6 Goblin Car Project September 2016 – present
Last year, we again held a car club weekly to prepare for the race which was held in Hull in July 2018. Ecotricity, a green energy company, kindly transported our car to the event. Unfortunately, we didn’t win the race due to battery issues but we received a trophy for the best car design.
HEALING PRIMARY
We first started our Goblin Car Project back in 2016 with support from a local company, Online Design. We were full of excitement at the prospect of actually building and racing our very own electric car. The whole of Y6 were involved in designing and building our Goblin kit car. The year group went to CATCH Training Centre, at Stallingborough, were their apprentices helped the pupils to construct the car. We had a competition to design the artwork for the car body and our sponsors, HMI Vestas Offshore Wind, chose the winning design. We then arranged for the body work to be made at a local fabrication firm and the paintwork was completed and a transfer of the artwork was applied. We held a car club every week for the year in preparation for the race. Children were timed for the different race event and times kept to show their progression. 32
panels as it was light weight and flexible. They decided that they would cover the panels in recycled crisp packets as we had an abundance of crisp packets from school packed lunches. They collected the packets every lunchtime, then started the task of cleaning and gluing them onto the panels. They decided to make the car silver but then use the different coloured packets as part of the design. We have encountered a few problems along the way, but have managed to overcome them using our own problem solving skills or by asking for support from our sponsors.
The children were shown how to change the drive belt after it had snapped and had a go at using the tools to fix it. We have just had our final car club session to decide the six race car drivers and we still This year, we decided to tackle our design need to complete our bodywork before issues and completely redesign our we race in April. ULTIMATE JETS
Humber Foundation NHS Teaching Trust – Children’s Services We set up a group for young people with the aim of building confidence and developing team working skills through working together constructing and racing the kit car. It took a little while for a consistent team to develop but now we have a committed group of three young men who have been actively involved in building the car and branding the team. The team has been working together every week since January, spending half an hour working on branding and an hour in the workshop. We have followed the same construction as the previous year as this worked well for us. We added a heat sink to the motor to improve efficiency and have decided to go with a slim body design to improve aerodynamics. They have really got on board with branding the team – choosing colours and a name that they thought reflected the spirit of
the group. The race day at Bylton park was a fantastic opportunity for the group. The race day helped motivate them for the rest of the construction ahead and helped them learn to work together as a team.
When we asked the young people what they appreciated about the experience they said “if you are nervous around other people, it helps you develop confidence and team working” and “it’s fun and helps you work as a team”. As adults we have been impressed by the skills that the young people have had to develop. This includes not only their technical knowledge but also life skills such as patience, cooperation and team working.
One of the real benefits with this project has been the contact that young people have had with outside agencies. Airco have kindly lent us their premises so the young people have had a taste of working in a professional environment. They are helped in this task by Mike, our volunteer who has years of experiences working on cars, bikes and lorries. Working in this environment has boosted their confidence and skills in relating not only 37
