LOOKING GLASS THE GREEN SHEET
HELLO, YOUNG FELLOW, WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU? ... An 8-year-old boy decided to take his 4-yearold sister along for a drive to the local McDonald’s in their father’s van because they were both very hungry for a cheeseburger. Police said the boy looked up videos on YouTube on how to drive. He was apprehended when he tried to make his purchase at the drive-thru window.
YOU’RE IN DEEP DOODOO, MISTER ... A man stole lumber from a farm shed, but then crashed his pickup truck into a large pile of manure while still on the property. Deputies found him standing on the side of the road, smoking a cigarette, covered in manure from his waist to his feet. One of the officers said, “The trip to the jail was made with the windows open.”

THIS IS ONE GRANNY YOU DON’T MESS WITH … A couple reached into a car and stole the purse of an 81year old woman after she pulled into the driveway of her home in Mount Pocono, Pa. They ran to their car to make their getaway, but, the lady gave chase and rammed into their vehicle, marking it in order to help police track them down. Which they did a short time later in a nearby supermarket parking lot.
BAD NEWS, MA CHERIE … A French woman thought she had won the lottery, and immediately went on a mad spending spree, racking up thousands of dollars’ worth of purchases. But her husband became concerned that the lottery company was slow in sending his wife her cash, and her checks started to bounce all through the a region of France. So he checked the number again. It was off by one digit.
RATS! IT’S MY MOM! … A 13 year old boy stole a Toyota Camry, and was driving it down a New Jersey road when he saw his mother approaching in the opposite lane. He soon panicked and crashed into a tree.
WHY ARE WE SELLING? THAT’S A GOOD QUESTION … A family decided to sell its homeafter two cars struck the residence in less than a month. The day before the first open house another car crashed into it.
UNTIL THEN, THE DATE WAS GOING GREAT ... A man went on a blind date in Cleveland after being set up with a woman through the app MeetMe. When he went into a gas station to buy her a pint of ice cream at her request, she stole his vehicle along with his cellphone which he had left with her because she said she wanted to use it to get some info on the Internet.
THE SPIRIT WORLD IS EXPENSIVE ... A man went to a psychic in New York City and asked her to repair a relationship with a woman who seemed to have no interest in him. The fortune teller then charged him $56,000 to rid him of an evil spirit that was stalking him, and another $30,000 for a time machine to cleanse his past. In the end, she scammed him out of more than $700,000.

HE RINGLING BROTHERS & BARNUM AND BAILEY CIRCUS announced
last year it was closing after a 146-year run, largely because of high operating
costs, costly legal battles with animal rights groups and declining ticket sales,
especially after elephants were retired from the show. Brett Kavanaugh's embattled nomination for the Supreme Court has become a circus, and it's time for the Senate Judiciary Committee to consider closing it to the public. As Kavanaugh's nomination has shown, these hearings only serve the objectives of special interests and certain politicians, not the general public. The Constitution is silent on congressional committees, which were established well after the document was ratified. The Senate Committee on the Judiciary (its official name) was, in fact, not established until 1816. Its purpose was to serve as a forum for public discussion on social and constitutional issues and to discover the views on these issues from nominees to federal courts and other high offices within the judicial system. In modern times, this committee has been used as a stage for political theater. During the Kavanaugh hearings, activists from far-left groups disrupted the proceedings, hoping, presumably, to get their pictures in the papers. Their rude behavior guarantees it. Defenders say they are exercising their First Amendment rights, but should those rights deny others their right to speak without being interrupted? Why does it seem that incivility is mostly practiced by the left? When a Democratic president nominates someone for the Supreme Court, one doesn't usually see Republican and conservative activists shouting and displaying signs in the hearing room. In the case of recent nominees by Democratic presidents, the GOP obstructionist power play over the nomination of Merrick Garland notwithstanding, though even in that case, we did not see the virulent cast of characters we're seeing today, some Republicans have voted to confirm, believing that elections have consequences and as long as the jurist is qualified, he or she should be approved. Not so with Democrats, who ap-
SEPTEMBER 24: ON THIS DATE IN 1957, United States President Eisenhower ordered federal troops to help desegregate the public schools in Little Rock, Ark. In 1968, the newsmagazine program “60 Minutes” premiered on CBS. SEPTEMBER 25: ON THIS DATE IN 1789, the first U.S. Congress adopted 12 new amendments to the Constitution and sent them to the states for ratification. Ten were then approved and became known as the Bill of Rights.
SEPTEMBER 26: ON THIS DATE IN 1950, United Nations troops recaptured the South Korean city and capital of Seoul from the North Koreans. In 1960, Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy met in Chicago in the first televised debate. SEPTEMBER 27: ON THIS DATE IN 1919, Democratic National Committee votes to allow female members. In 1964, findings of the Warren Commission into the assassination of President John F. Kennedy released, finds Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone.

pear to see the court as a cover for their inability to get unpopular laws through Congress, for example the outlawing of prayer and Bible reading in public schools and the striking down of all state abortion laws. If order and decorum are to be protected during future hearings for Supreme Court nominees, the committee should ban the public from attending. In a technological age where television networks can be accessed on smartphones, why is it necessary to have people filing in and out of the hearing room? What does the public gain from having such access? If activists want to exercise their First Amendment rights let them do so outside the building. That way, the rights of those inside will also be protected. Isn't that fair to everyone? If public access is allowed to continue and should President Trump get one or possibly two more opportunities to name a conservative judge to the court, these demonstrations and allegations of misconduct are likely to get worse. Like the shuttering of the Ringling circus, it's time to shut down this judicial circus. We can start by locking the door and conducting these hearings in an orderly and respectful way that honors everyone's rights, including the right of senators and the public to hear from the nominee uninterrupted by people whose parents, apparently, never taught them manners. by: Cal Thomas (c) 2018 Tribune Content Agency, LLC.

ID YOU KNOW? The perfect length of time to be on vacation is 8 days. Your health and wellness levels rise rapidly while on vacation, but they peak on the 8th day and return to baseline within your first
week back no matter how long you're gone. Because lengthier vacations don't seem to make a difference, experts say the key to improved overall satisfaction is to take more vacations, not longer ones.

With over 100 beers to choose from and an everyday happy hour from 7pm-9pm, Italian Village Pizza can win anybody over. Meet Frank Veltri, 36 and owner of this delicious family business. His father, Frank moved from Italy at age twelve in 1955. When arriving in America, school wasn't common for immigrants so he took up a job at a pizza shop. Bouncing around from different pizza shops, Frank Sr. was gaining a lot of knowledge on how the whole restaurant operation worked. Years later, Frank Sr. decided to open his own business. The first Italian Village Pizza opened in 1980 at the Century 3 Mall in West Mifflin. Today there are 25 locations in six states. Frank Sr.'s son, Frank Jr., began working for his dad as a kid and recalls making his first pizza at age 12 at the Century 3 Mall location. When he was 18 he moved to Kentucky, where his uncle lived and opened up his very own Italian Village Pizza. From there the demand for Italian Village Pizza grew and Frank continued to help open stores all over the Pittsburgh region. Although Frank hops around to different locations keeping up to date with the restaurants, you can primarily find him at the Waterworks location in Fox Chapel/Blawnox. The Italian Village Pizza taste remains constant through all their locations. Frank Jr. takes pride in carrying his father's original pizza recipe and delivering it to all of Western PA. Over the years, Italian Village Pizza has earned a strong reputation for their quality and value. As you already have gathered, Italian Village Pizza goes beyond just pizza. From salads, wings, soups and desserts, there's no way you can't find something you love. The restaurant is a perfect setting to watch a game or have a casual dinner with friends and family. If you don't feel like dining in, don't worry they offer delivery and take out. For the month of October (National Pizza Month) Italian Village Pizza at the Waterworks will be holding a contest. Here's how it works. You submit your pizza recipe to them in person with your contact info. One recipe will be selected each day of the month. If your recipe is selected, you will be contacted prior to the day they start selling it. Whichever recipe earns the most sales on their respective day, the winner will get free pizza for a year (one large pizza each month!). The key is to be creative. Have fun with your topping and sauce ideas, let the best pizza win. There is no reason not to give Italian Village Pizza at the Waterworks Shopping Plaza a try. You won't find a better New York Style slice with a cold beer anywhere else. This pizza restaurant ranks number two in Pittsburgh for selling Dogfish Head beer, and they have an insane special every Friday of $3 Dogfish Head bottles. Take the family, take a friend, go in by yourself! The service is quick and selling by the slice is their specialty. Walk in, order, pick out a beer on draft or bottle and sit down and watch the game. I promise you'll keep going back. By: Dan Hammond

IVING MICE A RE-THINK: That's what I'm doing, having just watched an amazing new 3D film, "Backyard Wilderness," now playing hourly at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. It's hard -- well, let's say a little hard-er -- to hate the whiskered nibblers once you see what they're up against, including freezing, starving and staring down the family dog as it peers inquisitively into their mouse hole. Give it up for these mice! "Backyard Wilderness" is a movie that makes you thrilled to be connected to all the living things on Earth. You feel a kinship not just to rodents but to salamanders, frogs and even some bugs -- heck, even to a dead deer. Let me explain: The movie is about a year in a suburban home and its backyard. But rather than a tale of the family that lives there, the film's humans are almost comic extras, often seen tapping away at screens, oblivious to the gobsmacking drama happening all around them in the natural world. And that, say husband-and-wife filmmakers Susan Todd and Andrew Young, was at one point pretty much true of their own family. Though the couple spent several years making nature documentaries in places like Madagascar and Alaska, home was just ... home. But once they had kids and read Richard Louv's "Last Child in the Woods," they realized this generation is growing up less connected to the outdoors than previous ones. "It gave us a feeling of urgency," says Young. They wanted their kids -- and everyone else's -- to understand that nature isn't only in exotic locations. It's everywhere. They set out to prove it. And so, over the course of four years of filming, Todd and Young managed to get footage of things even they hadn't noticed before, like a duck family living in their backyard tree. (Yes, some ducks live in tree holes.) Thanks to a camera they wedged into the ducks' hole, we get to watch the eggs hatch -- all at once. Later that day, they waddle over to the hole their mom has just blithely flown out of, look up, look down -- and jump. Duckling after duckling takes floppy flight, an amazing sight captured on camera (and vastly enhanced by Tom Petty's "Free Fallin'"). All told, about 10 ducklings leave the nest, find their mom down below and follow her to the local pond. Then, in another act of derring-do, they jump in and start swimming. And that's just one species. We also burrow into a raccoon home and see a mama with her babies. We soar above a hawk and watch him fly in slow motion. The filmmakers manage to document a caterpillar as it morphs into a cocoon -- so weird -- and then into a butterfly. It all makes you want to pump your fist in the air and give it up for Mother Nature. She is unstoppable. But of course, that doesn't mean the animals themselves are unstoppable. We watch a pack of coyotes track a deer. The deer doesn't win -- but we do. Using time-lapse photography, the film actually shows us, over the course of just a minute or two, the six months it takes for the deer carcass to decay into the earth. It's a little unsettling to see the bones so bare, but at the end, wonder of wonders, the deer has truly disappeared. Precisely where it died, we see in the spring new plants shooting up, green and glorious. It is so remarkable that it's like a prayer: world without end, amen. The movie makes you laugh, too, especially at the parallel existences of the mice just trying to live in a wall and the suburban kids just trying to do their homework. Look up from the screen, kids! The real world is just as educational and a whole lot more exciting.
Q: I AM A PERFECTIONIST and I suspect this compromises my effectiveness on the job. I also find it really annoying when others do sloppy work and I speak up about those problems. My intention is to stand out as competent and professional, but my team is starting to ignore me. I think my perfectionism is a problem. How can I fix it? A: Many highly intelligent and competent professionals are perfectionists. You can fix this problem if you realize perfectionists are highly anxious people that believe perfection will fix their chronic worry. My advice is to aim instead for adequacy and learn to tolerate the concerns you have about not doing everything at 100 percent.
WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 24, 2018
interpersonal edge
No need to swing for the fences every time; go for adequate Now clearly there are times in our career where 100 percent is necessary. Brain surgery, race car driving, and engineering buildings to be safe are examples. However, 100 percent really is not necessary for many aspects of most jobs. Believe it or not, adequate will work for most emails, reports and team meetings. If you believe every single task you do at work has to be perfect you will get little done. You'll also alienate others with your insistence on
perfection, which means no one will want to work with you. On any given day a valuable skill is to consider our tasks and ask ourselves which tasks require 100 percent - brain surgery - and which tasks can be merely adequate. Yes, at first if you stop doing everything perfectly you will worry about the fallout. A good question to ask yourself to manage your concern is, "What is my worst case scenario?" An imperfect email may need more info sent. An imperfect team meeting may require more work. A phone call that is only adequate may require a second call. None of these cause death or destruction to occur.

Perfectionism in part is a response to our genuine powerlessness in an uncertain world. Perfectionists often tell themselves that if they can just achieve perfection nothing bad will ever happen to them. Obviously this strategy is simple superstition. The most brilliant and proactive among us will still have bad things happen occasionally. When you aim for adequacy you can put your extra energy into having a Plan B in mind if a bad thing happens. Otherwise your perfectionism will not save you and you will be unprepared for adversity. You can now see in every job a pervasive need for perfection will drive success away from you not toward you. By embracing your new ability to aim for adequacy you can still turn on perfectionism on a few rare occasions when needed. You will not burn out yourself and others demanding your work ethic is on constant high when medium heat will work just fine! Q: I have a quick temper and often say things I regret. There are a many times when I get caught up in the moment at work and my frustrations really show. After my temper flares, I realize that ‘s not the most professional way to handle things. Is there any solution for a hot temper? A: Yes, silence. You're better off remaining quiet until you can think about what you want your words to achieve than opening your mouth and wrecking any chance for a good outcome. If need be, excuse yourself for a few moments until you calm down.

Grandmother Feels Trapped in Her Own Home By Amy Dickinson
DEAR AMY: My 36-year-old daughter and 8year-old granddaughter live with me. My daughter has a small business which brings in barely enough income for her to survive; it would be difficult if not nearly impossible, for her to get her own place. My daughter seems to get involved in one bad relationship after another, pays minimal attention to her child, drinks excessively, relies on me for childcare, rarely helps around the house and frequently cannot give me the agreed-upon rent of $300 a month. I am approaching retirement age, but feel I can't actually retire, as it will mean selling my house and finding something smaller that I could afford. While I would be OK with telling my daughter that she needs to paddle her own canoe, I'm reluctant to abandon my granddaughter. I've suggested, begged and hinted that my daughter get some counseling. She has struggled with depression and anxiety and takes medication, which doesn't seem to help much. Any ideas? -- In a Tough Spot DEAR TOUGH SPOT: Your daughter cannot reach her potential, as a person and a parent, until she stops drinking. Her alcohol use interferes with her judgment, triggers her depression and affects her ambition -- and the efficacy of her medication. And you cannot even begin to get out from under this until get some professional and therapeutic coaching about how to stop enabling your daughter without abandoning your granddaughter. Suggestions, hints and begging are not going to cut it. You have to create and maintain enough pressure and workable consequences to try to force your daughter toward change. You also need to fully absorb the very real possibility that your daughter will not change. Will you try to force her out of your home? This might be a challenge, certainly if she refuses to go (I have read of parents actually selling their homes and moving in order to force out a resident family member). You should contact your local department of Family and Childrens Services to connect with a social worker who could work with you to develop a plan and locate services to help your family. If your daughter refuses to attend sessions, go on your own. You should also attend a "friends and family" support group (check alanon.org for a local meeting). DEAR AMY: I recently got married to the man of my dreams! Now, I'm having problems with my mother. Mom has always struggled emotionally (in my opinion) with letting me grow up (upon graduation, or moving out), and has pushed away from me during those times. The same has happened here. I call her two to three times a week, like I always did, but the conversations are shorter and I don't feel like we are connecting like we used to. I know she likes my new husband, so I don't think this is disapproval. But I'm wondering what I can do to nurture my relationship with my mom: should I just let this go until she comes to terms with our new roles, or should I confront her and risk having her shut me out even more? -- Confused Daughter DEAR CONFUSED: Your insight about what lies behind your mother's distance sounds correct. You are both in the midst of an emotional and relational transition. Look at the dynamic from this angle: you want your mother -- and she's right there, same as always. She wants her daughter -- but your status has changed. Give her time. Don't let her emotionally manipulate you, but do let her adjust.
THE GREEN SHEET STARTING THIS WEEK: SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY: One key factor makes or breaks this prequel - how successful a different actor is in channeling Harrison Ford's portrayal of one of the most iconic characters in the world. Luckily, Alden Ehrenreich is up to the task. The script sets down the roots of Han, the interstellar rascal who lives by his own code; he throws in with a band of smugglers - Woody Harrelson and Thandie Newton - to end up an indentured servant to an interplanetary mobster. Director Ron Howard - who took over the picture after production had started - wisely gives sufficient time to Donald Glover, terrific as the younger incarnation of Billy Dee Williams' Lando Calrissian.

GOTTI: Admittedly, he's no Marlon Brando in The Godfather, but John Travolta does a reasonably effective job as the Teflon Don John Gotti, one of New York's most notorious crime kingpins. The script recalls the power Gotti wielded during his many years with the Gambino underworld dynasty, with his wife - played by Kelly Preston and son - Spencer Lofranco - by his side. The cast also includes Stacy Keach, Pruitt Taylor Vince and Leo Rossi.

UNCLE DREW: In a year that also is seeing him get his own television series - Fox's Rel - comic Lil Rel Howery headlined this tale as a down-on-his-luck coach who tries find a way into a Harlem streetball tournament. He appeals to a legendary squad to take the court again, but the key lies in getting a reclusive legend - played by NBA veteran Kyrie Irving - to participate. That man is the Uncle Drew of the title, and once he signs on, it's a matter of getting his old teammates on board as well. BILLIONS: SEASON THREE: An absolutely superb round of the Showtime drama finds nemeses Axe and Chuck - Damian Lewis, Paul Giamatti - both under the gun, as Axe's trial forces him to turn over operation of the hedge fund to Taylor Asia Kate Dillon-while Chuck feels the heat of having a demanding new boss - Clancy Brown - at the prosecutor's office. On the marital front, Axe's woes with Lara continue, while Wendy suddenly finds herself enmeshed in legal woes that could end up taking both her and Chuck down. David Costabile, Toby Leonard Moore and Jeffrey DeMunn also are in the cast, with John Malkovich as a Russian investor.

Ghostly
ENCOUNTERS The Paranormal By: Anonymous
WE BUILT OUR HOME and have lived here for 7 years. A few times I would wake up in the middle of the night and the bedroom would look "cloudy" or "hazy." My head would feel really heavy and I would think it is just because I awoke from a deep sleep or something and I would get up and turn on the light and the room would still look a little hazy to me. Recently I am beginning to think that all along it was something paranormal because just this past year other things have started to happen. I have heard knocks on doors when no one was on the other side. Also one afternoon when I was in the bath I heard my 6 year old saying, "Mommy," three times progressivley louder and I opened the door and came out and absolutley startled him. He was looking into my bedroom and said he saw something all black and about my size walking slowly through my room. He had thought somehow that it was me because he said it had hair like mine. As I am typing this I hear something sliding back and forth on the top of my computer cabinet though the only thing up there is a plant! I see nothing up there at all and now the sound has stopped. Anyway, earlier today I was upstairs cleaning and the kids were downstairs watching TV. As I came down the stairs I smelled something that smelled like chemicals. It was very strong and not knowing what it was, I made the kids go outside while I threw open the windows and investigated. Soon I traced it to our utility room where I heard a hissing sound. I started moving cleaning supplies around and found a can of wasp and hornet spray sitting there surrounded by these other bottles just spraying away on its own! Very strange to say the least, and upseting since I worried about my children breathing those vapors. Since my son saw this dark thing in my room I have started leaving the hall light on at night. The other night I flipped on the lights and all the bulbs popped! There are 3 bulbs in each overhead light and they all blew out and need to be replaced. Over the years I have experienced a few random paranormal things but not ever in my own home. This is making me feel uneasy and I don't really know quite what to make of it. My son also told me one evening he saw a blue light with a face in it go into our fireplace, but this was last winter before he saw the thing in my room. I told him his eyes must have been playing tricks on him and blew the whole thing off because I do not want him being worried and dwelling on anything like this. I have a friend who told me the more you speak of things like this and the more interest you convey then the more active ghosts or whatever they are will try to make you notice them. I have not really noticed this though since my family is full of old ghost stories that we have told many a time and it never seemed to make a difference before. That's the end of my story and hopefully the end of all the weird happenings also! ©theshadowlands.net
BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL: Ready to take matters into his own hands, Bill surprised Katie with a visit. An argument arose, made worse by Ridge's unexpected arrival. With the court date looming, Katie and Thorne exchanged wedding vows. The ensuing custody battle pitted spouses, siblings and lovers against each other, with no bad deeds left out of the testimony. Ridge continued to hide his secret. BURDEN OF TRUTH: On the season finale, Joanna used the law to her advantage. Once back in the game, Joanna decided to make her boldest move, prompting the industrial company to propose a new offer. It remained with the plaintiffs to decide whether to settle, or demand more. GOD FRIENDED ME: Miles got a stunning opportunity when a satellite radio company wanted to air his podcast. The God account pointed Miles toward a single mother. Cara tried to build a relationship with her estranged mom. Rakesh was crushed when he saw Jaya on a date.

After being forced to admit her reservations, Sam made a bold move. Jordan gave bad news to Margaux. Curtis obtained the information he needs. Sonny put Ava in her place. Valentin was put on notice. Griffin got reassurance. MANIFEST: The passengers from the missing flight faced government scrutiny as they struggled to rebuild their lives. Klaus realized it was time for him to finally die, and made peace with Hope, Caroline and his siblings. Elijah made a surprising choice. Rebekah opted for a life with Marcel. Vincent joined Freya and Keelin as a family. Coming: Hope begins a new chapter of her life on Legacies. THE OUTPOST: Talon faced a tough decision. After squaring off with Dred, Talon had to choose between getting revenge, and saving her friends.

Carlotta and Cassie continued to battle, as Maurice and Cassie teamed up with an unlikely strategy. Derek returned home to find that Miss Ruby is in trouble. STATION 19: The members of Station 19 continued to battle a huge skyscraper fire, with lives hanging in the balance. Pruitt's health was in danger at Grey Sloan. A seasoned firefighter with a mysterious past arrived at Station 19. His approach to the job differed greatly from the regulars. YOU: Convinced that Peach is not good for Beck - and increasingly aware that Peach is out to get him - Joe played a game of wits and schemes with his rival for Beck's heart. When Peach staged a suicide attempt, Beck fell back into her needy friend's circle, and Joe was left with only one option - removal. A MILLION LITTLE THINGS: When Sophie asked a very reluctant Eddie to dance with her at the father-daughter recital, it left Delilah feeling uneasy. Maggie quickly realized that a conflict of interest was arising after she agreed to have Rome in for a therapy session. Danny confessed a secret to Gary. Maggie received an unexpected visitor from her past. YOUNG AND RESTLESS: Victor refused to consider the possibility that he and Jack could be brothers. Mattie was arrested protesting Lily's imprisonment. Traci turned down Ashley's request that she become CEO of Jabot, insisting there's a better way to help Billy. Sharon proved successful in her job with the police department, causing Rey to second guess going ahead with his plan to deceive her.
