N YOUR HEART YOU KNOW HE'S RIGHT," was Barry Goldwater’s presidential campaign slogan in 1964. The critics of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), who announced Monday he is running for president, are effectively saying of him: "In your head you know he's

nuts." Even before his announcement, Cruz was labeled with the typical modifiers the left uses to scare people who don't pay much attention to politics -- extreme, far right, out of the mainstream. In the run-up to the next election, the left and their media colleagues will try to fool Republicans into nominating a mushy moderate from the party's establishment wing. You know, someone like "President John McCain," or "President Mitt Romney." They know that if the GOP falls for this line again, conservatives will stay home andHillary Clinton will be the next president. What the establishment and the left really dislike about Cruz is that he paints in bold colors. You know where he stands, whether or not you agree with his positions. There is little chance Cruz will say one thing on Monday and reverse himself on Tuesday to placate a different audience. Weak men fear strong men (and strong women) because the strong expose their weakness. Better for the weak to eliminate the strong and hide among other weak people. Cruz will face a problem similar to that of a TV evangelist: competing for dollars and votes from a fixed number of voters. When Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL.) and Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY.) jump into the race, perhaps followed by Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum and Dr. Ben Carson, all will seek money and votes from the same donor pool. None of these men knows how to unite conservatives much less the independents that those experienced in politics believe one must attract to win. Here's some advice, not only for Cruz, but for the other would-be candidates: Instead of nonstop attacks on President Obama, adopt a positive and future-oriented agenda. Cruz and the other candidates can start by considering some uplifting new videos created by Bob Woodson, president of the Center for Neighborhood Enterprise and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI.), who recently accompanied Woodson on a tour of some of America's poverty pockets. They spoke with people once considered beyond redemption, but who have turned their lives around. The result is a just released seven-part online video series called “Comeback" (www.opportunitylives.com/comeback/). The series highlights stories about drug addicts, alcoholics, abusers, gamblers, prostitutes and others, who with inspiration, motivation and perspiration are now inspiring others to pull themselves up and out of dire circumstances

without help from the government. In fact, some of those interviewed say they had been through many government programs and that none of them helped. While "Comeback" is partly Ryan's brainchild, the series is not about him, or Republicans. It's about overcomers who do the work necessary to escape poverty and addiction. HOPE WE HAVEN’T MADE A SCENE ... A young couple went into the ladies room of a pub in Durham, England, took off their clothes and engaged in a wild round of sexual relations. They were so loud that other patrons called the cops, but they refused to stop even after the police arrived. They barricaded themselves into a stall until officers pepper sprayed them, and dragged them naked into a patrol car. JOB’S DONE; TIME FOR MY COFFEE BREAK … A man who robbed a bank in Lodi, New Jersey, was caught because he stopped for coffee at a Dunkin’ Donuts right down the street. THAT OUGHT TO FOOL ’EM … Police pulled over a driver in Lincoln, Neb., and charged him with possession of marijuana they found in a container the guy had cleverly labeled “Not Weed.”

IT’S A CONSPIRACY … A man returned to his home in Wasilla, Alaska, to find a stranger hiding in his house suffering from drug hallucinations. He told the homeowner that people “were out to get him” and then ran away. WELL, I KNEW IT WASN’T MINE … Police pulled over a car in Georgetown, Texas, and the officer found a gun in the vehicle. The driver said it belonged to a friend, and his passenger said it belonged to the driver. A check of the serial number revealed that it belonged to the Austin Police Department from which it had been stolen. BUT YOU DON’T HAVE ANY EVIDENCE … A couple grabbed a rotisserie chicken in a Wal-Mart in Brunswick, N.Y., and then walked around the store eating it and drinking soda which they also had stolen. They were arrested.

interpersonal edge Don’t Let Negative Thoughts Block Your Road to Success

Q. FOR ME to be a success, I have to get my current boss to promote me. I’ve tried a million things to curry favor, impress my boss, and do stellar work, but no promotion is in the offing. How can I get the opportunities I want and get my boss to see my value? A. To get the opportunities you seek, you must first jettison the belief that your success is completely dependent on the actions of your boss. There are many ways to achieve our goals. One of the reasons we fail is that we get stuck waiting and waiting and waiting for the first solution we perceive. Try this: Close your eyes and go through a perfect work day after you’ve been promoted. Try to see yourself doing, smelling, feeling and seeing everything around you during your day. Feel all the gratitude and enjoyment you now have in your elevated role. Now work backward from that perfect day. Write down 20 different ways you could get that same kind of role in an organization. Notice that at least 15 of those strategies probably have nothing to do with your current boss. When we go to work, we often give our power to be happy over to our boss, the management team and coworkers. We then feel victimized by the genuinely unfair circumstances we constantly face on the job. Although it’s true that you’ll often be misunderstood, not appreciated, or badly treated,

you will always have the power to take your negative feelings and stare at the problem until you see multiple solutions. None of us like staring at problems. Staring at problems tends to make us feel inadequate, incompetent and frustrated. Since we don’t like feeling these emotions, we often only briefly glance at our problems before looking away so we can feel better. But, we then stay focused on our problems, which makes us feel bad. The bottom line is, when we often trade off our long-term happiness by avoiding temporary short-term bad feelings, we guarantee our work and personal life will be miserable. Bad feelings don’t last, but bad solutions that don’t fix problems do. If you’re ready to stop suffering, stop externally reacting in ways that fuel the fire of problems at work. Don’t ever counterattack, defend or explain during a conflict. Next, examine what you’re telling yourself that’s making you miserable. We often come up with dramatic and inaccurate statements like, “My career is over.” We then feel desperate because we don’t examine the validity of what we’re making up in our heads about the problem. If you quit internally explaining the situation as proof that you’re incompetent, unlovable, or worthless, you’ll settle down and see ways to help yourself. When you stop fighting with others and accept that even

DEAR AMY: The company I worked for offered an early retirement package. Since I am not old enough to draw on my pension I would have to roll it all over. I discussed this with my wife, and we came to the conclusion that this would be OK. She said if I took this early retirement I could help her with her home-based business. I agreed and retired two years ago. The problem is that I have yet to receive any compensation for the help I give every day to her business. Did I miss something here? All I ask for is a little spending money each week. She has control of all the income, and treats it as hers and hers only. What should I do? If I leave this arrangement it would greatly reduce the income coming in from the business. Should I just suck it up and keep begging my wife for gas money until retirement age? I told her I was going to get a part-time job. She said if I do I will have to pay her rent or move out. Please give me some direction. -- Angry and Hurt in Iowa DEAR ANGRY: Controlling the family's money and making you "beg" for every dollar of gas money is one hallmark of an abuser. Furthermore, your wife's threat to force you to pay rent or move out shows how desperate she is to control you. The way you describe it, this does not sound like a marital spat. This sounds like a way of life for her -- and you should consider calling her bluff. Please see a lawyer to research your rights. Her threats may be very shortsighted and ultimately quite expensive for her. If you do move out, you could end up with half the home and a stake in the home-based business (depending on how long you've been married and how aggressive your lawyer is). If your name is on the deed, she cannot force you to pay rent in your own home. DEAR AMY: Recently I have identified myself as a bisexual. I have been very confused about my sexuality all my life, but I feel happier now that I have come to this realization. I can now be honest with myself before I go off to college and start a new life. While admitting that I am bisexual has taken a huge weight off my shoulders, a fresh weight has been placed back on when I think about telling my mother. Although my mother is a wonderful, loving woman, I'm afraid she wouldn't take me seriously if I told her about my bisexuality. I have only brought home guys to meet the family, so I don't know if she'd believe me if I said I also like women. I have several gay male and female friends, and she is comfortable with them, but we have never explicitly discussed bisexuality. I don't know if she would react positively if I told her, which makes me incredibly nervous. I don't want to hide from my mother, but I'm scared of what she'll say. Should I come out to her or never disclose this information? -- Should My Mama Know? DEAR SHOULD: You present this as a choice between extremes: Tell your mother about your bisexuality now, or never tell her. I vote for the answer squarely in between: Tell her -- later. Go to college, continue figuring things out and tell your mother about your sexual orientation after your life is stable (and/or if you meet someone you want to have a serious relationship with). This is your life. You get to do things according to your own timetable.
