Madison, Minnesota Originally from Madison, Minnesota, Amber moved to St. Paul after graduating high school to attend college and had made the Twin Cities area her home for 17 years. Hailing from Iowa, Kyle also moved to the metro, where he later met Amber. They were married in 2016 and have three children—Kolten, Harrison and Archer. Wanting to be closer to family, the couple decided to make the move from the Twin Cities to Madison in 2020. Kyle and Amber were ready to soak up all the advantages of small-town living, while working for companies in the Twin Cities area. High-speed broadband allows them both to work remotely from the comfort of their home in Madison. One of the things they particularly enjoy about small-town living is the benefit of child care that is hard to beat in larger towns. The low cost is a great perk, but an even better aspect is the ability to create a personal connection with the people taking care of their children. Though conveniences of a metro area have their perks, Kyle and Amber are happy overall with the transition—and they even have time to slow down and enjoy life’s little moments with their three children, more so than before.

Chippewa County Natural resource options are plentiful in the 588 square miles of Chippewa County, whose entire western edge is comprised of the Minnesota River. In addition to the many recreational parks, the county offers three wildlife management areas, making it a hotspot for hunters, fishermen and wildlife watchers alike. But it also has made large investments in its communities, such as improving healthcare for its senior residents and providing an exceptional education. Just take MACCRAY’s forthcoming $40.7 million central campus, for example, which will feature connected pre-K/ elementary, middle and high schools. For a small-town feel with big-city innovations, Chippewa County is the place to be.

Recreation With a Side of History Whether you like to paddle the lake in your canoe or kayak, want to explore one of the numerous walking/hiking trails or cast a line for walleye, Lac qui Parle State Park offers it all. Camping and lodging are both available by reservation, and trails are open daily year round. While you’re visiting the park, be sure to stop at the Lac qui Parle Mission. Joseph Renville established the mission, where he worked with missionaries to create the first written Dakota alphabet. The recreated Mission Church is where the first church bell tolled in the Minnesota Territory in 1835. Experience the rich history at the annual Mission Sunday, which is held the second Sunday in July. Chippewa County offers two camper cabins at Wegdahl County Park, located on the Minnesota River. The rustic cabins are similar to those found in state parks and are available for use year round by reservation online at co.chippewa.mn.us. Hike or bike the trail running from the park to Montevideo, launch a canoe on the river or just enjoy the peaceful surroundings by the river in this 30-acre park. Public water access at the site also makes it a popular destination for anglers and paddlers. A Bird Hunter’s Paradise If you’re looking for one of the best waterfowl and upland bird hunting experiences in the state, you’d be hard-pressed to top Watson Hunting Camp. This camp specializes in guided geese hunts and, in addition, offers world-class guided hunts for ducks and other waterfowl, doves, pheasants and wild turkeys. And if you’re ready for a change of pace, the camp also offers fish house rentals during the winter. Accommodations range from large, heated sleeper houses, or choose to stay at the inland Watson Hunting Camp Hotel and Bar.
The camp’s bar is open seasonally and reopens during the weekend of the Minnesota fishing opener every year. Checkered Flags and Cheese Curds There aren’t a lot of counties fortunate enough to have the benefit of a speedway in their region, but luckily for visitors to the Chippewa County Fair, the Fiesta City Speedway showcases the unique thrills and dizzying array of high-speed races to get your adrenaline pumping. Races take place every day during fair week. And that’s just the beginning! For the little ones, check out the youth archery area, visit the 4-H Imagination Station or compete in turtle races. The fair also features live entertainment, a variety of fair food delights, beer gardens, a reptile zoo, tractor pulls, animal exhibits and more. The Chippewa County Fair takes place during the last week/weekend of July in Montevideo. A Little Taste of Hollywood Home to one of Minnesota’s most innovative immigrants and the background for a 2005 Hollywood film, the Olof Swensson Farm Museum is a National Registry site featuring a 22-room, turnof-the-century brick farmhouse nestled on 17 acres. Olof Swensson was a farmer, self-taught scholar, statesman, carpenter, bricklayer and more—and is considered to be one of the state’s most well-known, innovative immigrants. Also on site is a historic timber-framed barn built in the 1880s, which features an elaborate system of wind-bracing and notching, testaments to Swensson’s carpentry skills. The site served as a backdrop for several scenes in the 2005 Hollywood movie Sweet Land. The museum is self-guided, but private tours are available by appointment.

Camp Release Monument
Historic Destinations The Camp Release Monument, erected July 4, 1894, stands as a reminder of Minnesota’s tragic early history as a state. The Minnesota River Valley and the area of Montevideo played an integral part in the U.S.-Dakota War in the fall of 1862. After their defeat at Wood Lake, Dakota warriors surrendered at the Camp Release site, where they released any prisoners they had. They in turn became captives—38 were executed at Mankato, some were imprisoned in military prisons, and some were executed after conviction in summary trials at the Lower Sioux Agency. The monument was the first property added to the state park system and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Agricultural Heritage Minnesota Valley Antique Farm Power and Machinery Association welcomes visitors to its 35-acre show site, known as Heritage Hill. The nonprofit hosts an array of events throughout the year for the entire family, including the annual Threshing Show and Heritage Days.

A Home for Minnesota Veterans With expected completion in 2022, a new State Veterans Home is being constructed in Montevideo and will serve 72 residents in a residential skilled care model, with four households of 18 residents. Amenities will include private, single-occupancy resident rooms with full bathrooms, as well as living, dining, kitchen and den rooms in each household. Community spaces will be comprised of a café, club room, multipurpose room for large events, lifelong learning classroom, theater, library, meditation space and more. The design of the building will reflect a prairie-style architecture and incorporate natural materials—not to mention the views and beauty of the surrounding rural landscape. The facility is also projected to bring 150 FTE jobs to the area. Live Fit, Right in Your Own Community The CCM Wellness Center is now open! This new, 35,000-square-foot center in Montevideo provides residents with state-of-the-art equipment, well-planned spaces for exercising, basketball/pickleball courts, a yoga/spin studio, locker rooms with saunas and much more. Micronesian Population For
Founded by Norwegian immigrants in the late 1870s, the city of Milan is the epicenter of Scandinavian heritage and culture in Western Minnesota. Every year in May, the community celebrates its Nordic roots on Norwegian Constitution Day, known as Syttende Mai—friends, old and new, honor their pioneer heritage through music and dance, arts and crafts, and food and fellowship. Outdoor Adventures Take in the outdoors on the Milan Bike Trail, located on the outskirts of town along Highway 40, which offers incredible views of the scenic river valley. Then, make your way to the Milan Beach Resort. This family-owned campground is nestled on the shores of Lac qui Parle Lake, putting you right on the lake with easy access to excellent fishing.
the past 20 years, Milan has been an immigrant destination for people from Micronesia, a cluster of islands located in the South Pacific. The first Micronesians arrived in Milan in 2000, and hundreds more have since followed in pursuit of better jobs and schools, while their homelands face a dire outlook due to climate change. Fast forward to today and more than half of Milan’s population is estimated to be Micronesian—and have become an integral part of the community’s future.
Arts for All As a nonprofit dedicated to promoting the arts, the Milan Village Arts School hosts a diverse range of classes and workshops, reflecting the rich heritage within the community. Typical classes include Norwegian knife-making, weaving, rosemaling (decorative folk painting) and silver-smithing, to name a few. Attracting spoon carvers from across the U.S. and abroad, the annual Spoon Gathering in June offers a family-friendly event catering to both novice and experienced carvers.

Yellow Medicine County Yellow Medicine County covers 758 square miles—including 21 townships and 10 communities—and is nestled between the Minnesota River Valley and the Coteau des Prairies, an area with a bevy of natural resources. Its namesake comes from the Dakota word Pejuhutazizi, or “Yellow Medicine,” which is the bitter root of the moonseed plant that Dakota people traditionally used for medicinal purposes. Rich in Native American heritage, the county has served as the homeland of the Dakota Oyate Nation for generations. Full of stunning views of the unique landscapes, friendly locals and diverse communities, Yellow Medicine County is truly a must-visit destination.

Entertainment for Everyone When it comes to entertainment, Prairie’s Edge Casino Resort not only offers some of the best slot machines, table games and other popular betting options in the area, but it also features 160 rooms and suites, as well as some of the region’s top amenities. If gaming isn’t your speed, the resort regularly hosts live shows and has great dining options for every palate. It also boasts a 20,000-square-foot convention center that can be configured to accommodate corporate events, meetings and weddings. During the warmer months, the Prairie View RV Park and Campground gives visitors the option to set up RVs or tents, with a paved walking trail connected right to the resort. Speaking of fun—there’s nothing that brings a community together better than a county fair. The Yellow Medicine County Fair, a four-day event held annually at the fairgrounds in Canby the third weekend in July, has entertainment for young and old alike. Must-See Monuments and Museums The state of Minnesota erected the Wood Lake Battlefield Monument in 1919, in memory of those who died in this final, decisive battle in the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. On September 22, 1862, General Sibley led 1,500 troops to this area. The army neared the Upper Sioux Agency that afternoon where they camped for the evening. The next day, a small group of foraging soldiers uncovered an ambush by a small group of Dakota Akita (warriors) along the creek crossing on the government road. They were just some of the 700 nearby warriors under Little Crow, a Dakota leader. Sibley’s entire army was alerted, and the Battle of Wood Lake ensued. After three hours of fighting, the Dakota quit the battlefield, having lost over 20 of their relatives. The U.S. Army suffered seven losses. The Western Minnesota Prairie Waters region has a rich history in agriculture, and there’s no better place that show-
cases its strong ag presence in the area than Minnesota’s Machinery Museum, located in Hanley Falls. This unique attraction features five buildings on a 6-acre site that showcases a century of stories about farm life. First opened in 1980, the buildings house an extensive collection of tractors, vintage automobiles, gas engines and more. There’s even a building—a converted two-story former schoolhouse—that features beautiful handmade quilts and other rural art. Abundant Recreation You don’t have to travel far to experience the great outdoors in Yellow Medicine County. Carved into the landscape by the massive glacial River Warren between 11,700-9,400 years ago, along the Minnesota River lends itself to a bevy of recreation opportunities, including fishing, paddling, hiking and more. Upper Sioux Agency State Park contains the historic site of the Upper Sioux or Yellow Medicine Agency. The park covers 1,280 acres with open prairie knolls, bluffs and cool, wooded slopes. Trails are ideal for horseback riding and hiking, and in the winter months, skiing and snowmobiling are popular activities for visitors. And mark your calendars for the Upper Sioux Community’s Pezhutazizi Oyate Traditional Wacipi Powwow, a three-day celebration of culture and heritage, held the first weekend of August. Yellow Medicine County also boasts two top-notch county parks. Timm County Park, located on the north shore of Wood Lake, is a popular camping-friendly park that offers a recently developed campground. Other amenities include a picnic shelter, swimming area, boat ramp and dock. Located in the heart of Yellow Medicine County is Oraas County Park, a serene area filled with backwater and bur oaks. This relaxing retreat is a great setting for neighborhood gatherings and family camping, and is a convenient wayside rest for travelers.

Granite Falls is a progressive community full of natural beauty and abundant wildlife, and the Minnesota River weaves directly through the town. Whether you enjoy fishing, grabbing a bite at a locally owned restaurant or shopping for antiques, it’s not hard to find an activity here that would pique your interest. Arts, Culture and Community The arts and culture scene is alive and well in Granite Falls, thanks in large part to the Granite Area Arts Council. The council also owns and manages Makers on the Minnesota, a gallery and performance venue that features unique items for sale by local artisans, and also offers classes in a dedicated classroom space.

Take a Stroll Across History No trip to Granite Falls is complete without a stroll across the historic 280-foot-long Roebling Footbridge. The structure was built in 1935 by the Roebling Company— the same firm famous for designing the Brooklyn Bridge in Brooklyn, N.Y. Venture across and visit the Kiwanis Popcorn Stand, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2019. Granite Falls is also the proud home of the Fagen Fighters WWII Museum. This facility houses a pristine collection of fully operational active aircraft and vehicles from World War II, and also features fine art, bronze sculptures and interactive multimedia displays. Then, visit the Yellow Medicine County Museum, where displays tell a story of the geology and archaeology of the Minnesota Valley, Native American history and pioneer life in the county. A Minnesotan’s Fight for Prohibition One of Granite Fall’s more unique attractions is the Andrew J. Volstead House Museum. This house-turned-museum is the former residence of Andrew John Volstead, a former mayor of Granite Falls (1900–1902) and member of the U.S. House of Representatives (1903–1923). Volstead is best known for penning the Volstead Act in 1920, which was created to enforce the 18th Amendment by giving federal authorities power to prosecute the “manufacture, sale or distribution of intoxicating liquors.” It also defined intoxicating beverages as those containing

Canby, often referred to as “The Gateway to the Prairie,” is the westernmost city in Yellow Medicine County. It is located in the center of a broad-flat valley and offers Instagram-worthy views of the Coteau des Prairies in South Dakota, a great ridge of rolling prairie hills. Family Festivities and Fun Canby proudly hosts the annual community festival known as Hat Daze, held over Father’s Day weekend in June. “The Most Famous House in Canby” Tabbed as the “49 Day” House, the LundHoel House Museum is truly an American-Victorian architecture wonder. Built in 1891—in just 49 days by John Lund of Lund’s Land Agency—the house has been the talk of the town with its frequent upgrades shortly after it was built, including a gas plant to light the house at night. Outdoor Adventures No trip to Canby would be complete without a visit to the hiking/biking trail that connects Lake Sylvan and Stone Hill Regional Park. Start at Lake Sylvan, and spend time at the pool and playing tennis on the newly redone court. Keep going on the trail until you get to Stone Hill Regional Park. A Swift County Staple You know you’re a beloved staple in the community when you’ve been around for 124 years—that’s how long the Swift County Fair has been entertaining guests of all ages in the region. This is truly a county fair that has everything—fireworks, a demolition derby, live music, a rib fest where the top local rib makers compete for top honors, 4-H exhibits and livestock shows and, of course, mouth-watering food, midway rides and games and so much more. For those on the go, the fairgrounds offer 128 full electric sites with water. The Swift County Fair is held annually during the third week/weekend in August in Appleton. Off the Beaten Path Once an old gravel mine, the rolling terrain and excellent riding make the Appleton Area Off-Highway Vehicle Park a fun family adventure. The park covers 330 acres, including 20 miles of trails. It’s ideal for off-highway vehicles enthusiasts of all skill levels, containing miles of narrow technical trails that include stairsteps, hill climbs, rock crawls and mud pits. There’s also a motocross practice track available for use. Approved vehicles include all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), 4x4 trucks, motorcycles/ motorbikes and off-road vehicles like utility and side-by-side terrain vehicles. The park is open year round, although some trails close at certain times of the year. Facilities
Nature’s Serene Splendor Located on the banks of the Chippewa River, Swift Falls County Park offers a great place to hike, fish or enjoy its newly renovated playground. Fishing enthusiasts can cast a line in areas below the dam for a chance at northern pike and walleye, or try a spot along the Chippewa River to snag your catch of the day. Hiking trails are scattered across the park, offering quiet, wooded terrain with foot bridges over waterways for a truly serene escape. Camping spots are available May through October, and electricity and water hookups are available for motor homes, campers and trailers. Explore camping options, hiking trails and beautiful, scenic lakes at the 347-acre Monson Lake State Park. The park lies within the Alexandria Glacial Moraine Complex, which was created by glaciers more than 30,000 years ago. The rocks, sand and gravel left by the last glacier make up the drift that formed the rest of the awe-inspiring landscape. Speaking of glaciers, Monson and Sunburg Lakes were formed by melting ice in the glacial divide thousands of years ago. And whether you’re into hiking, fishing, birdwatching or just a lazy day floating on the lake, Monson’s sure to have something to fit your taste. The park features six electric and 14 non-electric sites for campers or RVs, and showers, flush toilets and vault toilets are available for use. After undergoing a major vegetation restoration in 2018, the 125-mile-long Pomme de Terre River now flows freely into Marsh Lake for the first time in more than 80 years. As a result, the habitat in the area has improved dramatically, creating a thriving environment for native fish and migratory wildlife. A recent water drawdown in 2021 was initiated by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to help protect and strengthen the growing vegetation.

Benson The city of Benson (along with much of Swift County) owes its early growth to railroad expansion. Land developers A.W. Lathrop and W.V. Lathrop opened the first general store in Benson in 1869, anticipating a surge in trading business because of the coming railroad. And they were right. In 1870, the railroad reached the site where the Lathrops built and determined it would be a solid trading center. Soon after, the city of Benson was established, named in memory of a prominent politician from Anoka. Within five years, the population of Benson had grown to 300, with four general stores, two drug stores, two machinery houses, three hotels, one bank and two saloons. In one of the general stores, A.N. Johnson & Co., the sales ran up to $60,000 in the last eight months of 1875. Today, Benson continues to unify, support and promote growth of area businesses and enhance the quality of life for the entire community.

A Special Link to Benson’s History First opened in 1925, Benson Golf Club started as a ninehole course but was expanded to an 18-hole championship course in 1971. The renovated clubhouse hosts events ranging from weddings, class reunions, business meetings and more. Other features include a large driving range, a well-maintained putting green and an excellent short-game practice area. The course features some tough hazards, including numerous holes with bunkers and water. And although the club has undergone a lot of changes since its inception, the original intent remains the same—bringing

A Day Dedicated to the Kids This cool event truly is just for the kids—the annual Benson Kids’ Day takes place each summer during the third weekend of July. Children can dress up and participate in a parade, enjoy carnival rides, play in a minigolf tournament and much more. There’s also the popular Medallion Hunt, where the hunt goes on until the medallion is found and the winner receives a cash prize.

A Festival of Marching and Music Celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2022, the Pioneerland Band Festival Parade is held annually on Flag Day (June 14), and features area high school bands competing for cash prizes. The early June date serves as a traditional kickoff for many bands that plan to compete in the active summer parade all across Minnesota. Last year, 11 bands competed for top honors. If you can’t be there in person, listen to the live broadcast on KSCR Radio. Take a Break from the Summer Heat Offering a zero-entry pool with various play features great for small children, the Benson Family Aquatic Center boasts a large lap pool, diving board, drop slide, large flume slide, and food and beverage vendors. Appleton A lot of towns and cities find different ways to celebrate the sacrifices our war veterans made for our freedom, but maybe none as unique as Appleton. On May 21, 1947, Appleton’s residents decided to rename its streets in honor of World War II soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Since then, heroes from the Korean, Vietnam and Iraq wars have also been added. It’s Not Fall Without Applefest If you’re going to name your city Appleton, it’s highly likely you know how to put together a great apple festival. Appleton has done that and more with its annual Applefest. Held the third weekend in September, the four-day event features live entertainment, a bike rodeo, a dog parade, a daily art tour, a golf tournament, kids activities, a street dance, a car show and, of course, delicious food—both apple and non-apple related. A Summer Swimming Destination Spend hot summer days at the Appleton Aquatic Center, which features a zero-entry pool, a kids area, slides and a lounging section. During the summer, the center offers open swim, lap swim, water aerobics, deep water aerobics and swim lessons.

Help Shape Tomorrow’s Sportsmen If you’re a serious sportsman who enjoys a range of hunting and fishing activities, the Appleton Sportsmen’s Club is a member-only organization that promotes safe hunting and fishing, including youth education classes, trap shooting leagues and various other activities. The club also offers various distances for shooting, along with a

rifle and pistol range and a venue for a youth trapshooting league. Near the club is the Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Park, where challenging trails to accommodate all skill levels. River Recreation With all the great activities in Appleton, it’s sometimes easy to overlook one of the city’s most treasured attractions—the Pomme de Terre River. The river flows directly through the city and is a popular destination for tubing, canoeing and fishing. Enjoy music in the park in the summer, or play a few rounds of disc golf at Riverview Park. Riverview Park features a walking path, shelter, large playground and trail access. The Appleton Bathhouse features the restored WPA-era bathhouse located at the site of a popular (circa 1940s) swimming pond on the Pomme de Terre River. Today the park features picnic tables, a fire grill and a community campfire ring, right on the banks of the river. If the activities on the river aren’t your speed, check out the serene setting surrounding Lac qui Parle Lake. The lake is a favorite of local fishermen, as it’s stocked with white bass, walleye, northern pike, crappies and catfish. You can cast a line from shore or bring your boat and enjoy the stunning views from the water while reeling in that once-in-a-lifetime keeper.

In the fall of 1958, only 150 geese were counted at the park. Since then, management practices have brought as many as 120,000 geese to the park at a time and has become a major spring migration stop for water birds. Similar success has
been seen with white-tail deer and other animals in the region. Be sure to plan ahead before your visit, as the park offers a wide array of activities. Besides its abundant trails and beautiful lake, it’s also home to a visitor center that features wildlife interpretive displays, meeting rooms and a nature store. There are also naturalist programs held occasionally during the summer months. If you’re a history buff, cross over to Chippewa County and visit the historic Fort Renville and Lac qui Parle Mission Site. The park is also a popular spot for campers—permits are available by reservation. Who would have guessed that Minnesota’s only alkaline wetland, Salt Lake, lies within Lac qui Parle County’s borders? The lake, which is one-third as salty as seawater, sits on the border of Minnesota and South Dakota. Th e high salt content has transformed this area into a birdwatcher’s dream. The lake has been recognized by the state as an area with “outstanding biological diversity” and is one of Minnesota’s top birding spots, with an average of more than 120 bird species documented each year. Each spring, shorebirds, waterfowl and other water birds visit the area to rest and feast as they make their way to northern breeding grounds. The area around the lake is not well-developed, but there is a viewing area with signage. There are also some clear spots along the shoreline where you can hike and take in the sights. A Mini “Minnesota Get-Together” Nicknamed the “Little Minnesota State Fair,” the Lac qui Parle County Fair (located in Madison) falls during the week/ weekend following Labor Day, giving one last shot at family-friendly fair fun—in case you couldn’t make it to St. Paul for the “Great Minnesota Get-Together.” The fair boasts the Minnesota High School Rodeo, live music and events, rides, games, food and beverage vendors, 4-H showings and just about everything else you’d expect to find at a classic county fair.

Founded in 1885 and Lac qui Parle’s county seat, the city of Madison has the unique distinction of being nationally known as the “Lutefisk Capital of the U.S.” The city works hard to maintain a small-town feel and strives to make its community a great place to visit, live and work. Home of Lou T. Fisk Known as the “Lutefisk Capital of the U.S.,” Madison is home to “Lou T. Fisk,” a 30-foot cod statue that welcomes visitors into town via S. Highway 75. Lutefisk, which is a Nordic delicacy often served during the holidays, is essentially frozen, dried fish and lye. For the brave of heart, there’s a lutefisk-eating contest during the annual Norsefest celebration, held the second weekend in November. Madison’s Golf Headquarters A popular attraction for locals, the Madison Country Club is a semiprivate, ninehole course situated on 40 acres and features two water holes, one par-3 hole and eight par-4 holes. If you’re interested in joining a league, there are weekly women’s and men’s leagues. Play Ball! When the grass turns green and the sun is shining, you can bet Madison’s Memorial Athletic Park is buzzing with activity. The park is home to the Madison Mallards, an amateur team, as well as legion and junior league baseball programs, including the LqPV Eagles. Teams can compete day or night, as the lighted field allows play to continue after the sun sets for the day.

The Need for Speed Featuring a 3 /8-mile-high banked dirt track, you’re guaranteed to enjoy some awesome racing action at the Madison Speedway. The track offers a variety of racing options every Saturday night from Memorial Day to Labor Day. A Park That Has It All If you’re looking for a park that’s brimming with recreational opportunities, Slen Park offers a wide variety for activities for visitors of all ages. The biggest attraction is a modern swimming pool with a large slide, along with a toddler splash and play area for the little ones. Aside from swimming, Slen Park also features basketball and tennis courts, shelters and a playground.
Big-Screen Entertainment If you’re looking to see the latest Hollywood blockbuster or catch a free matinee featuring everything from kids’ movies or a treasured classic, you’ll be sure to find it at the Grand Theatre. This quaint, art-deco venue is open exclusively on weekends. All the World’s A Stage Once a Lutheran church, the Prairie Arts Center has hosted theatrical events and productions for more than 30 years, providing opportunities for involvement in and exposure to the performing arts for both children and adults. The building has a history of showing small one-act plays, children’s theater, large musical productions and more. The renovated sanctuary houses a stage and seating for up to 230 people. The setting is intimate, allowing the audience to fully immerse themselves in the productions. Next-Level Senior Living Experience Scheduled to be completed in 2022, Madison Healthcare Services’ new senior Care Center will provide an unmatched option for elder care. The 56-bed facility will offer nursing care 24 hours a day, and all residents will have private rooms with a bathroom and shower option, flat-screen TVs and large, spacious closets. Madison Healthcare is also adding a 12-unit Independent/Assisting Living Building—these private apartments will feature full kitchens and baths, underground parking and ensuite laundry.

The city of Dawson, affectionately self-proclaimed as “Gnometown U.S.A.,” is a progressive community focused on maintaining a quality of life surpassed by none. The city boasts beautiful parks and a golf course, and Dawson excels through its excellent school and healthcare systems. Parks In Their Own Class Just east of Dawson, you will find Gnome Park Campground. This 10-site campground offers family-friendly amenities. Arts and Entertainment for All Home to the nonprofit Dawson-Boyd Arts Association, Memorial Auditorium offers world-class entertainment for all ages, including classical, folk and current music, children’s theatre, dance, comedy and opportunities for local musicians to showcase their
talents. The Dawson-Boyd Arts Association can also arrange for professional performances, master classes and workshops for students. Prioritizing Senior Healthcare Built in 2018 to meet the growing needs of the community, Johnson Memorial Care Center offers 56 private rooms, a surgery suite, a helipad and lab and radiology expansion, and it is directly attached to the clinic/hospital entrance. The facility is conveniently all connected on one campus and features a chapel, café, two guest suites, a salon and a wellness room. A Major Remodel Seeing the need for a modern addition to its school, the Dawson-Boyd School District undertook a major remodel over the last few years, as part of a plan to tear down and build a new elementary school. The school will feature a science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics center; a new community center, cafeteria and kitchen; and an Innovation Lab. The remodel is expected to be completed in 2022.

King of Trails Centuries ago, Native Americans cut travel routes out of the virgin prairie. With the automobile invention, roadways sprung up from many of these routes. One—stretching from Winnipeg, Canada, south to the Gulf of Mexico—became known as the King of Trails. You can navigate this historic roadway down through the entire western edge of Prairie Waters. Minnesota River Valley National Scenic Byway The Minnesota River is the premier natural feature of this byway, stretching far beyond our western border near Ortonville, across the entire southern portion
of Minnesota to the bluff country of the Mississippi River. See 3.8-millionyear-old granite outcroppings, lush prairie grasses, national refuges and state parks. Prairie Passage Over a century ago, the western portion of Minnesota was covered by more than 18 million acres of tall grass prairie—today, less than 1 percent remains. The Prairie Passage route travels through areas of region where sparse pieces of the original prairie still remain. Yellowstone Trail In 1912, a group of small town businessmen in South Dakota undertook an ambitious project to create a useful automobile route across America, the Yellowstone Trail. Today, almost all of the route of the Yellowstone Trail is on slower, less traveled roads. Some sections of the trail, especially in the west, have remained little changed and are a must-see.

This project brings all the schools together at the site of the high school in Clara City. The new elementary school and middle school concept will open in the fall of 2022 with the new theater/auditorium opening in the high school in November 2022.
