Greenville College empowers students for lives of character and service through a transforming Christ-centered education in the liberal arts, sciences, and professional studies.

EXTENDING OUR HERITAGE AS GREENVILLE UNIVERSITY
At each turn, they encountered the names of dedicated scholars and faithful Christ-followers from GC’s past whose extraordinary commitment to Christ-centered education continues to influence our work today – people like: • Carrie T. Burritt, namesake of Burritt Hall and instructor in missions, who championed GC’s expanded international reach during the 1920s. Burritt’s dedication and relentless promotion of mission work kept the subject in front of students and drew many to the mission field. This year, Burritt’s passion lives on through students serving in Thailand, Fiji and Tanzania. • Walter Scott, namesake of Scott Field and professor of physical education, who personally turned part of GC’s campus into an athletic field. The 1922 Vista reported that Scott graded, dug, raked, sprinkled and rolled the sod “into slick respectability.” With that same spirit, current and former professors added a locker room to the Briner Training Center this summer. • H. J. Long, namesake of H. J. Long Gymnasium and chemistry professor, who, as the College’s longest-serving president, called colleagues to embrace the “sacredness of personality.” We echo that call today when we tell students that God has created each of them to uniquely shape the world. Prospective students were not our only guests last November. Members of GC’s Board of Trustees also gathered on campus to carry out their work.
They unanimously approved a five-year strategic plan to extend our heritage into a new era and expand GC’s reach. Essential to that plan is the transition in name from Greenville College to Greenville University. For more than a decade, we have functioned as a university by meeting the needs not only of residential students, but also of international students, graduate and non-traditional students, distant students who value the flexibility of online learning and professionals who seek continuing education credits. Our clear designation as a university, effective July 1, 2017, will assure prospective students from all of these groups of our capabilities. As they explore their options, we hope that Greenville University will emerge as their choice. GC’s first president, Wilson T. Hogue, launched the work of Greenville College in 1892 by proclaiming that it would promote “true and thorough” Christian education. “‘Education for character’ will be our motto,” he said. Our mission today remains true to Hogue’s vision. Our purpose remains relevant. Our heritage remains inspirational. Our faith remains engaged as we fix our eyes on seeking the Lord’s favor and following His lead. Now, more than ever, we treasure your prayers, covet your encouragement and strive to be good stewards of your support. Blessings,
Dr. Ivan Filby President

Last November, high school students descended on campus for a preview of college life. With enthusiasm and curiosity, they imagined themselves part of our community. They attended classes and athletic practices; they talked with students, professors, coaches, band and choir directors; they ate lunch in the dining commons and stayed in residence halls.

FILLING A NICHE, THEN AND NOW For more than a century Greenville College has delivered programs that meet select marketplace needs and packaged them as part of the “true and thorough” Christian education envisioned by its first president, Wilson T. Hogue. Ninety years ago GC students earned certifications in areas like stenography and refereeing high school sports. Today they develop expertise in audio engineering, digital media, music business and other majors that are a good fit for GC’s resources and capabilities. New programs on the horizon include sports management, nursing and video game design and development.

Today’s Joy Hall lettermen sport sweaters they’ve earned that bear the initial of Walter A. Joy (GC Class of 1900), whose spirited determination compelled him to make the most of his college years. Joy penned the alma mater that these men will sing at Commencement. From Wilson T. Hogue’s pronouncement in 1892 that “all students residing in the college building” are members of the college family to the enduring bond and brotherhood of “Joy Boys,” generations of students have benefitted from GC’s strong community. Plans currently on the drawing board leverage this strength by connecting students to our core values and helping them link their learning to career R GIV aspirations. FO IN

Merton Munn ‘28 earned his “G” by excelling in five sports. Today’s Joy Boys earn their letter sweaters through a mix of programming, Bible study and service that fosters excellence in Christ-centered leadership.

GOOD STEWARDSHIP AND FUTURE FOCUS Just as the construction of residence halls and a student union facilitated a spike in enrollment after World War II, this year’s addition of a multi-use suite of offices and meeting space on the top
floor of the library facilitates increased productivity and teamwork. Director of Property Management Mark Owens (pictured at left) oversaw the renovation that features movable walls to keep options open for future uses. Looking ahead, GC’s new strategy includes plans for developing similar flexible-use facilities that promote creativity and collaboration and allow for future repurposing and redesign.

surprised to find that nothing had been published in academic journals that focused on Roberts’s Ordaining Women,” said Wayman. “This seems to me an amazing omission. Ordaining Women is a great gift to the church not only in its time, but ours as well.” Wayman’s current project is a new edition of Ordaining Women. Also this year, Professor Kent Dunnington presented a paper on intellectual humility in higher education at a conference of the Wesleyan Theological Society, and Professor Christina Smerick chaired the Wesleyan Philosophical Society.

Young theologians following in Thompson’s footsteps and providing leadership in Wesleyan thought today include Professor Ben Wayman ’02, author of the newly released Make the Words Your Own, An Early Christian Guide to the Psalms (Paraclete Press, 2014). In a recent article for Women’s Studies, Wayman paralleled the work of B. T. Roberts and Elizabeth Cady Stanton on gender equality. “I was

In the spring and summer of 1914, students labored to roof and enclose the building before winter. “The work has been pushed forward, especially during school hours,” reported the Vista. By February 1915, the gymnasium housed practices for a 15-member tumbling team and 20 student basketball teams, plus fitness classes for community members and students alike.

“IF IT IS TO BE, IT IS UP TO ME”
Thanks to alumni, faculty and students, GC’s newest facility, J K L Academic Hall, may rightly be called the house that collaboration built. Don ’52 and Esther (Knapp ’54) Jones purchased the former office building on Locust Street for the College and took the lead in funding renovations. Generously investing sweat equity, students and professors transformed it into the new home of GC’s Department of Philosophy and Religion. The joint effort echoes a time early in GC’s history when students raised $2,000 for the construction of a

College Missionary Society 1922
Head Men’s Basketball Coach George Barber and friend in Costa Rica
THE SUN NEVER SETS By 1922, 12 percent of GC’s graduates served overseas as missionaries, and more than 170 students belonged to its missionary society. First lady Carrie T. Burritt said that the sun never set on Greenville College because so many of its graduates lived and worked in distant lands. A student reporter observed, “The influence of our institution for God and righteousness is being extended from year to year to the corners
of the earth.” Recent participants in this lineage include Panther basketball players who delivered a message last summer of faith, compassion and sportsmanship to the people of San Jose, Costa Rica. “The most challenging aspect of the trip was definitely the language barrier,” said Panther guard Alex Mumphard ’14. “I don’t speak Spanish very well, but God remained perfect in this weakness.” The players discovered that basketball transcends language differences. They held basketball camps for children, played exhibition games and shared the gospel through personal testimonies.

CALLED TO INCLUDE Attending college might still be a dream for the inmates at Greenville’s Federal Correctional Institution if not for the pioneering work of Professors Frank Thompson and Dan Jensen and the current work of Professor Kent Dunnington and Stan Pickett ’91, director of education at the facility. This fall, Greenville College launched a credit-granting partnership that enables inmates to earn transferable credit through college courses taught at the prison. Professor Teresa Holden (shown below) recently initiated the women’s program with a course entitled “American Social Movements.” Engaging prisoners not only responds to Christ’s teaching in Matthew 25, it also flows out of GC’s heritage for serving persons previously excluded from college, like women, students of modest means and military veterans.

CULTIVATING PARTNERSHIPS For more than half a century, Greenville College has partnered with the University of Illinois and Washington University in St. Louis to prepare students for careers in engineering. FRIENDS Ninety-eight percent of the students enrolled WHO GAVE in these programs have successfully completed them. GC is now on target to launch a nursing partnership in 2015 with St. John’s School of Nursing in Springfield and under negotiations to establish nursing partnerships with Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and Saint Louis University. The 3/2 format (three years at GC and two at the partner school) will allow students to earn bachelor’s degrees in both biology and nursing. On the international front, GC’s University Pathways English learning program continues to draw students from China through partners Beida Jade Bird and YeChing Elite. Shown above, students from Immanuel Business School (IBS) in Hyderabad, India, recently visited GC’s campus. They reciprocated a visit GC representatives made to IBS earlier in the year. YO U

“LIKE PASTOR, LIKE PEOPLE” B. T. Roberts, the father of Free Methodism, believed that significant contributions to society depended on an educated laity, and an educated laity required educated leaders. His colleague Wilson T. Hogue echoed these sentiments as GC’s first president. “Like pastor, like people,” said Hogue. By the 1940s, 33 percent of GC’s graduates had prepared for full-time Christian ministry. That preparation frequently included service to local churches and communities.
Each year, in addition to student interns placed in ministries across the country, 30-40 students train as resident chaplains on campus. They learn how to guide their peers through challenging situations and inspire them to respond to God’s call. GC’s strategic plan calls for more experiential learning through service, mission trips, international experiences, chapel and worship activities, athletics and internships.
For 17 years, resident chaplains at GC have prepared for their work with fellow students by kicking off the school year on WalkAbout, a wilderness camping experience that fosters spiritual growth.
