ROOF

45600 The design of the Aitken Street building, Wellington, boasts and elegant timber diagrid structure; the first in New Zealand. A combination of structural expression and hidden structure is implemented in the design to provide a linear separation between the functions of the levels.

On the ground floor, a floor to ceiling glazed wall is used for the retail outlets to provide visual interest from the outside to inside and attract pedestrians into the shops.

From Level 2 to Level 7, a unitised curtain wall system is used with modules conforming to the diagrid structure. Where the curtail wall is fixed to the diagonal members of the diagrid, weather-tightness is achieved by capping pieces which acts as a structural expression of the diagrid. From Level 8 to Roof Level, a hidden structure facade is utilised. In further drawings the detailing of the facade will exhibit the qualities of the facade and how it is design for the apartment occupants. Metal panel cladding is used for the walls and operable window frames are installed.
