Hello again! I’m very excited to bring you the first-ever BLACK ROCK EDITION of NORTH IDAHO LUXURY LIFESTYLE Magazine. As always, it’s our goal to showcase the finest communities in the Western U.S.—and Black Rock, located in scenic Northern Idaho certainly fits that bill. As you’ll discover on the following pages, Black Rock is a very special place, situated on a dramatic basalt rock bluff overlooking one of the most beautiful lakes in all the World. Within the Black Rock Community is The Golf Club at Black Rock—an exclusive golf and social club featuring one of America’s “Top 100” golf courses and a masterfully-made mountain lodge clubhouse, complete with multiple dining venues, spa, fitness center, salt-water pool and private beach club. We’ll explore the current real estate offerings at Black Rock, including residential homes and vacant homesites. Plus, you’ll find everything you need to know regarding the goings-on and the culture of the community and The Club, including this years’ schedule of events, interviews with key personnel and loads of other useful information. If you’ve been in or around North Idaho for any amount of time, you’ve no doubt heard of Black Rock. Perhaps you’ve even visited the Club on occasion. This issue is intended to give you an “inside the ropes” look at what the Black Rock Lifestyle is truly all about. You may have even read some literature regarding Black Rock previously. Words like “special” and “world-class” get used often regarding this amazing place. At the end of the day, it’s not just marketing fluff or hyperbole, it’s ALL TRUE. Life at Black Rock is unique, and offers a refined and entertaining living experience for members, guests and homeowners of all ages. I’ve been at Black Rock from the beginning in 2003. Initially as an employee, and now as a property owner and member. Given that background, I’m able to offer a unique perspective on what makes Black Rock extraordinary. Sharing this wonderful place with prospective buyers and new members has become my passion. Please enjoy the photos, information, personal interest articles and testimonials herein. And please, don’t hesitate to give me a call if you’d like to take a closer look at Black Rock for yourself.
We had vacationed in the Canadian Rockies several years in a row and wanted to find a second home experience with similar scenery, but a longer season. Many mountain destinations in the West are also at higher elevation, and it takes more time for the body to acclimate, but Coeur d’Alene sits at a perfect 2100 feet above sea level. Real Estate in North Idaho is also more reasonable than other resort areas in the Western U.S. There are so many positives, we really didn’t seriously consider any other place. —Bill P. The sun is shining and we’re off and running for the 2019 season here at The Golf Club at Black Rock! Every spring we look forward to seeing so many familiar faces — as well as new ones, as more and more people discover this great place that we call “HOME.” Our team has been busy planning over the winter months, and the calendar is jampacked with golf tournaments, social events, and fun for the whole family. The golf course “wintered” well, and is primed and ready for another epic season. Last year was another HUGE success for us, where we added several new members to our ranks. We also experienced huge successes in the launch and participation of some new events and venues, such as the bocce ball league (which will be extended this year) and pickleball. We’ll be adding new equipment at our private beach here in a few weeks, which is sure to be a hit for members of all ages—kids, parents and grandparents alike. Something you might not know is that here at The Club we have a full-service concierge team that is ready to assist with any needs that may arise when you come to town; whether it’s booking transportation to/from the airport, renting a boat to spend some time on Lake Coeur d’Alene, or scheduling a ziplining adventure for the family. The Inland Northwest has so much to offer and we strive to help our members and guests make the most of their time here. There’s simply no denying that Black Rock’s facilities and amenities set it apart from other clubs, but it’s our culture and the presence of friends and family, and the memories and legacies made, that truly make us one-of-a-kind. We hope you have the opportunity to experience this remarkable place for yourself, and we hope that what you see in these pages gives you a glimpse into what it could be like for you to call Black Rock “HOME.” From ALL of us here at Black Rock, WELCOME... The Black Rock Community was established as an exclusive, private, gated residential neighborhood. Privacy, security and safety were, and still are, paramount considerations for owners choosing to purchase and establish a residence here. Each purchaser of a residence or homesite in the community may apply for Membership to The Golf Club at Black Rock. Ownership of a residence or homesite does not give any vested right or easement, prescriptive or otherwise, to use the Club facilities. I probably shouldn’t admit this, but I made up my mind to become a member about 10 minutes after walking in the Black Rock door, even without touring the golf course. Greg, Shatana, Kelli, Trevor, the whole staff, the members, made me feel so warm and welcome. There is a spirit there. A sense of belonging. Everyone hides their ego and success far away. Quite simply, there is something “magical” about Black Rock. It’s hard to describe unless you go there. The first thing that comes to mind when I think about Black Rock is FAMILY. We are all real close at Black Rock—the members, the staff, everyone. We care and we look out for each other. You can be yourself, relax, yet feel part of a close-knit community. It’s truly special and I feel privileged to be a member. —K.Y. (member)

For us, the decision to join came down to the facilities and the staff. Black Rock has so much to offer, not just for my wife and I, but for our kids as well. Our kids love using the beach, the pool, the basketball court and the golf course. —Aaron H. (member of 4 years)
CLIFF & DONNA FINDLAY For the 3rd time since Black Rock opened in 2003 there’s been a change of ownership. As many know, The Club transitioned ownership in 2010 from a single developer to a group of a dozen or so members. Last summer, one family, Cliff and Donna Findlay, bought out the remaining members of the ownership group and returned The Club to a single-owner business model once again. To add some context; Cliff and Donna are based out of Las Vegas, Nevada, where they have lived and operated car dealerships for several decades. They are the proud parents of 4 children and a handful of grandchildren. Cliff is a 5th generation Nevadan. His family settled in Panaca, NV, in 1848, nearly 20 years before Nevada became recognized as a state. Later, the family moved to Las Vegas in 1960. Cliff’s father was an Oldsmobile salesman, which led to Cliff’s entry point to the auto industry. Initially, working as a lot boy, then used car manager, and on up and up and up. They opened their first car store in 1990, and now own 35 dealerships across the Western U.S. I thought it would be nice to share with the readers here the decisions that led to the Findlay’s purchase of The Club, and their plans for the future of Black Rock. Q. Most would think that at this point in your lives it’s time to slow down a bit. So why this? Why now? A. Cliff. Well we didn’t buy this as a revenue stream to keep our family going, that’s for sure. It just felt like the right thing to do. A couple guys on the ownership group had some health issues come up, and sadly, a couple passed away. We just didn’t want to go through what we’d been through all over again, and we didn’t want The Club to have an uncertain future. We just want to keep The Club on the path that it is headed thanks to the work of the ownership group, and we want to see it restored to what was always intended. We are 100% committed to this. Donna. We just love The Club for what it is, and we love the people here for who they are. We don’t want that to ever change. This is the prettiest golf course in the world in the prettiest town in the world. It’s a special place to us and to so many of our close friends. It felt like it was our time to take the reigns. Q. What lessons have you learned from your father and in your professional life that you apply around here? A. Cliff. He taught me to treat people like you want to be treated and never lie to anybody. He used to tell us to abide by the “10 foot rule.” This means that if you’re ever within 10’ of someone, you make eye contact and say hello. It’s that simple. Donna. It’s important to us to treat our employees like our own family. We can’t do it without them. 8
w w w.BlackRockIdaho.com
Q. How and when did you initially come to Black Rock? A. Cliff. One of the original members, Bud Gordon, and I were here in Coeur d’Alene for a Toyota President’s Award trip. He invited me to play, and while we were on the course, Donna said she was going to go look at some property. I told her OK, but if you buy something, make sure it’s one of the inexpensive lots. Later, she caught up to us on the 11th tee box where the sales associate she was with congratulated me because we had just bought the most expensive lot at Black Rock! I said… we did what?! Donna. (laughing). Yeah, I just fell in love. Q. Now that you’ve been here for more than a decade, sum up your thoughts for me about Black Rock. A. Cliff. It’s a special place. There aren’t any more of these being built. Not anywhere. Donna. I’m not a golfer, so for me, it’s not about the golf course. This is what golf clubs used to be like. The people here love each other like family. They rally around when someone is sick or celebrating. It’s just a special place to grow old… and grow up. I love attending the various social events and watching the people. Everyone “table hops” because they’re so interested in catching up with one another. It’s not a place to come if it’s your goal to be alone. It is the perfect place to come if you like to meet people and make new friends. Q. I’m sure you have big plans for the future of Black Rock. So what’s next? A. Donna. It’s our goal to keep providing things to do, that are of interest to everyone. Cliff. We plan to keep upgrading the facilities and amenities. We just bought all new golf carts and shuttle vans for this year. We remodeled the clubhouse last year with fresh paint and new carpet. We remodeled the ladies’ locker room too. We just want to keep making things better. Q. Is there a message you’d like to share with anyone who might be considering joining Black Rock? A. Donna. It’s been our experience that a “club” is not a place. It’s a group of people. And that’s what we have here. It’s a group of people who like to have fun and who are genuinely interested in each others’ well-being. We just want to see that continue. Cliff. This place is as good as it gets. So what are you waiting for? I think I can speak for the entire membership when I say that we know the future of Black Rock is bright, and we have 100% confidence that we are all in very good hands. —GMR

LIVING IN NORTH IDAHO Amid snow-capped peaks under azure skies sits the tranquil "panhandle" of Northern Idaho—widely known for its fresh mountain air and natural beauty. Located within a half-hour of an international airport, and perched perfectly at the crossroads of Interstate 90 and Highway 95, it's the ideal jumping off point from which to explore the wild west. But with an unlimited supply of year-round recreation opportunities, including hiking, biking, boating, and skiing, and with 5 ski mountains, 25 golf courses and 50 lakes all within a 50 mile radius of downtown Coeur d'Alene, you may never want to leave.
NORTH IDAHO WEATHER ELEVATION Coeur d’Alene, Idaho is located at 2180 ft above sea level. TEMPERATURE Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 23˚F to 84˚F, and is rarely below 10˚F or above 93˚F. The warm season lasts from June 23 to Sept. 10, with an average daily high temperature above 74˚F. The hottest day of the year is July 27, with an average high of 84˚F and low of 56˚F. The cold season lasts from November 14 to March 5, with an average daily high temperature below 42˚F. The coldest day of the year is Dec. 26, with an average low of 23˚F and high of 32˚F. SUN The length of the day varies significantly over the course of the year. The shortest day is December 21, with 8:24 hours of daylight. The longest day is June 20, with 16:02 hours of daylight. PRECIPITATION The probability that precipitation will be observed varies throughout the year. Precipitation is most likely around June 16, occurring in 9% of days. Precipitation is least likely around November 26, occurring in 2% of days.
When people think of The Golf Club at Black Rock, the first thing that comes to mind is world-class private golf. And rightfully so. Architect Jim Engh has crafted 18 completely unique holes through wooded forests, across prairies and wetlands and around natural ledges, towering waterfalls and basalt rock formations from which Black Rock gets its name. From the grand front entry to the private wine room there is no detail left to chance. Eric Hedlund with his distinctive style and experience with golf clubhouse design has selected every detail with an ample use of native material giving the feel of a grand lodge and unpretentious luxury.
HUMIDITY The relative humidity typically ranges from 25% (dry) to 93% (very humid) over the course of the year, rarely dropping below 15% (dry) and reaching as high as 100% (very humid). DEW POINT Dew point is often a better measure of how comfortable a person will find the weather than relative humidity because it more directly relates to whether perspiration will evaporate from the skin, thereby cooling the body. Lower dew points feel drier and higher dew points feel more humid. Over the course of the year, the dew point typically varies from 18˚F (dry) to 53˚F (very comfortable) and is rarely below 3˚F (dry) or above 59˚F (comfortable). The time of the year between June 23 and August 17 is the most comfortable, with dew points that are neither too dry or too muggy. WIND Over the course of the year typical wind speeds vary from 0mph to 15mph (calm to moderate breeze), rarely exceeding 23mph (fresh breeze).
I get jazzed when I can find really interesting locations on a piece of property. I call these “hot spots,” and I try to connect them. At Black Rock we had this great rock cliff wall and I just had to use it. A lot of designers call these “difficult” sites, but I love them. Every time I face a “problem” I stew on it long enough and come up with a really creative solution. For me, adversity is the mother of invention. Somewhere along the line, someone decided there were ‘rules’ to golf course design. The only rules I have is that a course has to be playable, even if it’s weird, hidden or quirky, and it has to be fun. If those two factors are involved, it works. —Jim Engh (Black Rock Member, Course Designer)

Originally for us, it was about the golf. We love playing, and when we joined, I figured that’s all it was about. Now, I look forward to the comradery that we’ve built with other members. We love sitting at the poolbar or in the Clubhouse and socializing more than the golf aspect. The facilities are incredible. Trevor Fox giving Shaquille O’Neal a golf lesson at Black Rock in 2018.
GETTING TO KNOW: TREVOR FOX, PGA The tale of a small-town boy making it big is as old as time. And certainly there’s a reason that we have a soft spot for this storyline. It’s the innate belief that something great can happen for each of us, regardless of our starting point in life. At Black Rock, our PGA Director of Golf, Trevor Fox can tell this tale first-hand. He has gone from small town kid to a Top 100 Golf Pro. We sat down the other day for a little Q and A. Q. I know you grew up in Oakesdale, WA. For the readers, give us a sense of what that was like. A. Yeah, it’s a small farming town for sure. The population there is around 400 people. I think the current enrollment at the high school from grades 7 through 12 is a total of 37 students. Q. That’s not exactly the place we would expect one of the best golfers in the entire Pacific Northwest to come from. How, when and where did you start playing golf? A. I started on a baseball field. When I was young, my dad (Joe) would take me and my older brother (Travis) to the baseball field to hit golf balls. When I improved my skills, he took me to the Tekoa Golf Club, about 18 miles away. He would just drop me off in the morning on his way to work and pick me up on his way home. I played all day every day. I played with anyone who would play with me. I played as many holes as I could walk in a day. Q. When did you realize you were better than your peers? A. I was pretty good in high school, made it to state both junior and senior years, but I guess I knew I could really compete with the better players when I was in college. Q. Did you play in college? A. Yes, I played at Eastern Washington University. First, as a walk-on, and later as a scholarship athlete. I finished second in one event and earned All-Big Sky Conference honors my senior year. Q. Did you go right into the golf business after college? A. Not immediately, no. I earned a degree in Business Marketing and Management Information Systems (M.I.S.), and I always knew I wanted to do something in sports. Initially, I worked for the Spokane Chiefs hockey team as a marketing intern. I learned quickly that life in a cubicle wasn’t a good fit for me. So from there, an opportunity to go to work as an Assistant Golf Professional at Indian Canyon Golf Course in Spokane presented itself, and the rest is history.
Q. Sometimes working at a course doesn’t give you the opportunity to go play for “real” money. Did you ever consider trying to play golf for a living? A. Sort of. My first few years as a Pro, I saw some good success. I even got a small offer to go “play” by someone who was willing to back me financially. But it’s such a tough lifestyle and I had already built a great network as a PGA Pro. So instead of hitting the road, I just hunkered down as a local club pro, focused more on teaching, and played as many local, regional, and section events as I could. Q. What are your career highlights as a player? A. I won the Montana Open twice, in 2003 and 2006. The second win in 2006 was pretty awesome. I started the final round 8 strokes back of the lead and shot 63. That’s my career low tournament round. And then last year, I qualified for the National PGA Club Professional. That was simply incredible. It was as close to playing in a tour event as anything I’ve ever been part of. It was televised, the galleries were roped off, and it was first class all the way around. It was a great experience. I’m definitely hoping to get back there again very soon. Q. Turning the page from Tevor Fox as a player, let’s talk about Black Rock specifically. How did you come to be the Director of Golf at one of America’s Top 100 Courses? A. During my time at Indian Canyon in Spokane, I also worked at Rancho La Quinta in California during the winter months for several years. I started at Black Rock in 2005 as an Assistant Professional, and have managed to climb the ranks. It’s hard to believe I’ve been here for 15 years now. Q. I think you’re as much a fixture at Black Rock as the course itself. What do you enjoy most about the culture there? A. I’m not a big city guy and I never wanted a big city job. I enjoy what I do and love where I do it. I honestly don’t feel like I’m going to work every day. Yes, there are long days where it can be tiring, but I’m one of only a few people on the planet who gets to call a Top 100 Golf Course my office. The best thing about this place though isn’t the course, it’s the people. Yes, we went through some hard times. Lots of courses did. But the relationships that came out of those times have become very special to me. I feel like family with the people at Black Rock. At the previous clubs where I’ve worked, there are nice people and I’ve made good friends, but what we have here is totally different. Q. What are some of your favorite memories on the course at Black Rock? A. One memory that immediately comes to mind is from a few years ago. We played a Men’s Night forward tee scramble and I was partnered with (the late) Bill Morrow. He was such an influential guy around here, and we played great together and won the thing. It wasn’t an “important” round so to speak. But is was just so fun to see him having such a great time at his age. Also, Tom Bottiaux and I won the Member-Pro Tournament in 2012. It was pretty cool to defend my home turf against so many other pros from around the country.
Trevor—teeing it up at the PGA Professional Championship in 2018. Bayonet Black Horse Golf Course Monterey, CA
Q. What accomplishments are you most proud of as the Director of Golf? A. I love what we’ve been able to create for our Men’s and Ladies Days. We have a thriving and active group of players every week. And I love my staff. It’s important to me to find and keep good people. It can be difficult in the golf business, especially at a seasonal club. I feel super lucky to have the same guys and girls come back to work for us year after year. Q. What’s new for the coming season? A. We rearranged the tournament calendar which seems to be a big hit. We sold out all of our major tournaments this year, which hasn’t happened in awhile. The Alamo and Wyatt Earp actually filled in minutes after we began taking sign-ups. Our next big focus is on our Junior Program. My staff and I are excited to build a program that will help our future Black Rock members really enjoy the game of golf. —GMR

I challenge anyone to stand on the 11th tee box and not be moved by the sight. It takes your breath away. Jim Engh thought of heaven when he created Black Rock, I swear! It took me a long time to figure out how to play Black Rock, and truth be known, I’m still puzzled everyday. It’s an incredible, yet fair, test of golf. This past year, I had the honor of witnessing a new course record (63 gross). What a day, an amazing golf-buddy, gracing an amazing track with an amazing round. It gets no better! —K.Y. (member)
To me, the thing that makes this golf course special is that it plays differently every time you tee it up! Each hole reveals something new— something not noticed the time before. And that’s true for players of all levels. Men, women, seniors and juniors all experience the same thrill. —Trevor Fox

We could toss around words like commitment, excellence, passion and perfection, but our guess is your eyes would start to roll. You might even be tempted to turn the page. It seems everyone is trying to distinguish themselves from the competition using words that aren't very distinctive. At Edwards Smith Construction, we believe in the old axiom: actions speak louder than words. That's why we invite prospective clients to tour our completed homes. Put your blinders on to the bling and really look at how they are put together. From foundation to finish, there's a difference that's palpable. Artistry and attention to detail are the hallmarks of our success. It's evident in every facet of your project from what you see to, perhaps more importantly, what you don't.

There’s been a recent trend among Black Rock homeowners to find and buy a modest cabin on the waterfront near the Club, and then tear it down to replace with a “day cabin”— somewhere to hang out on the water, keep a boat, cook a meal and unwind.

That’s precisely what we’ve done at THE ESTATES. You could even say that we started the trend. TRIVIA TIME— WHO IS THIS? (#52) Hints
(answer on pg. 8)
• UNLV Basketball Star & Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee • Career Rebounds-Per-Game Leader, UNLV Men’s Basketball History • Played in 1 Final Four
UNPACKING THE NEW RULES OF GOLF The Rules of Golf can be confusing. And now, the USGA and R&A have gone and changed some of them. In general, it was their goal to speed up the average pace of play – something I’m sure we can all agree is a good idea. This seems like as good a place as any to share with you some of the rule changes that are now in effect and how to proceed if/when you find yourself in any of the following situations: THE FLAGSTICK You can now leave the flagstick in the hole when putting on the green, and there is no penalty if the ball hits the flagstick. The old rule required the flagstick to be pulled, and if the ball hit the flagstick, a player was penalized 2 strokes. PENALTY AREAS The term ‘water hazard’ is now replaced with ‘penalty areas’ – and in addition to ponds, lakes and streams, also includes deserts and jungles. Yellow and red markings will continue. Relief on the opposite side of a red penalty area has been removed. SEARCH FOR LOST BALLS If your ball is lost anywhere outside of a penalty area, the search time to find it is now three minutes (instead of five). If, during the search the ball is accidentally moved by anyone, there is no penalty. The ball is simply returned to its approximate position.
Trevor Fox, PGA Director of Golf The Golf Club at Black Rock
DOUBLE HITS/DEFLECTIONS If you accidentally hit the ball twice with one swing, there is no longer a penalty stroke. It merely counts as one stroke with no penalty. The same concept applies for any ball that accidentally deflects off you, another person, a golf bag or a cart after a shot. Play the ball as it lies when it comes to a rest. Under the old rules, it was a one stroke penalty. DROPPING FROM THE KNEE The process has been revised for dropping and playing a ball from a relief area. The drop procedure has been changed from shoulder height to knee height in a standing position. If you drop from shoulder height this year, you will be penalized one stroke. FIXING THE GREEN Fixing ball marks on the putting green has always been OK. But now it is also OK to fix other marks/damage on the green such as spike marks, indentations caused by equipment and animal marks. Also, your putting line to the hole can now be touched. BUNKERS You can move loose impediments in bunkers and will not be penalized for generally grounding your club away from the ball, so long as it doesn’t improve the conditions for the next stroke. There is now an additional option which allows you to take a drop outside of a bunker for the penalty of two strokes. CADDIE/PARTNER POSITIONING A player’s caddie/partner can no longer stand behind the player and help with alignment. The caddie/partner cannot position themselves behind the player once the player begins taking a stance for the stroke. If the caddie is behind the player during the process of taking a stroke, the player will incur a two-shot penalty. READY GOLF Golf’s governing bodies are also encouraging ready golf in stroke play, and recommend golfers take no longer than 40 seconds over a shot. Holler if you have any questions, and let’s go have some fun out there. —Pro

FIT AND FINISH A CLASSIC RUSTIC NORTHWEST LODGE AT BLACK ROCK The expression Fit and Finish can be used to describe many things, most often referring to manufactured products (cars, handguns, etc) but also applicable to almost any human production (tv shows, websites, etc). It is also used frequently in real estate when describing luxury homes. Fit refers to how well the component parts come together, and finish refers to the completeness, quality or perfection of the work. This is precisely what local luxury home builders, Edwards Smith Construction, are known for. And when they were chosen to build one discerning couples’ dream home at Black Rock in 2006, that’s exactly what they were asked to execute. Build a home to exacting standards and complete the woodwork, both interior and out, to an impeccable “furniture-quality” finish. The vision was to build a quintessential “Rustic Northwest Lodge.” To do so, they chose to build a stick framed home with timber accents and native stone. They chose a homesite on prestigious Onyx Circle that offers privacy, yet showcases the dramatic lake view from nearly every room on the main level—kitchen, dining, great room and master suite. And with the guidance of Edwards Smith Construction, their vision was executed emphatically. As the client puts it, “There are so many small things that separate a true luxury home from a very nice high-end home.” He continues, “Often times, it’s in the things you can’t see. Mechanics, foundation and framing. Other times, it’s the stuff you look at every day. Just run your hands across the wood floors, trim, baseboards and stairways, the woodwork is still perfect. It’s like living inside a piece of hand-made furniture.” Now, they have decided to sell their magnificent North Idaho home. Their travel patterns won’t bring them back to North Idaho as frequently as they used to. “It’s just time,” he says. “We’re going to miss it here, no doubt. We believe we built the finest home at Black Rock, and now it’s someone else’s turn to enjoy it.” 42

THE NEW & THE TRIED-AND-TRUE YOUR CUSTOM HOME At Edwards Smith Construction, we feel fortunate and are humbled to be selected to build many of the region’s premier homes. It’s exciting to be asked to create one-of-a-kind residences that express our clients’ individuality. As it happens, it’s also a fun time to be building in North Idaho. The natural rustic charm that’s been favored in the area will always have its place against a backdrop of evergreen-laden mountains and the region’s shimmering lakes. But there’s an infusion of cool and unique elements of late that, until recently, were limited to design magazines and larger markets. The good news is these elements are no longer out of reach. Materials are more readily available and the technology is in place. Most importantly, we’ve raised the bar for ourselves and our subcontractors to ensure these elements are implemented efficiently, function properly and, of course, look great.

Welcoming Walls Many of our clients are turning to different materials on the walls or as the wall itself to add a new dimension or feel to their homes. As the name implies, rammed earth walls are constructed by ramming natural raw materials into place to create eye-catching walls that garner attention – both inside and out. Resembling sedimentary sandstone without the thousand-year wait, these high-performance walls are energy efficient while providing the homeowner with a sense of quiet and comfort. Custom steel patina panels provide an industrial dimension to the home yet still maintain warmth due to their rich, dark tones. Wallpaper is making a comeback, with options for any budget, providing homeowners a way to express their unique style in graphic, colorful and textural ways. Thanks in part to Chip and Joanna Gaines of Fixer Upper fame, shiplap continues to grow in popularity. Throughout the design and construction markets, these walls provide a farmhouse feel that many homeowners desire.

Sophisticated Siding One of the main functions of siding is to serve as the first barrier to outside elements such as rain, snow, hail and ice. Practicalities aside, siding adds color and definition to your home, allowing you to highlight special features, set the tone for interior and other exterior aesthetics and ensure that wow-factor when your home first comes into view. The love affair with locally available and harvested wood products continues in North Idaho, but other options are causing a stir. The use of new materials such as high-density, laminated wood panels and rammed earth walls provide a unique exterior aesthetic. Both “siding” options protect against adverse weather conditions without the need for maintenance or treatment down the road.
High Density Laminated Wood
Reclaimed wood – particularly charred wood siding – adds warmth and depth to a home’s exterior. It provides a naturally aged and weathered appearance along with a potentially tighter grain structure than virgin wood for greater durability. Factor in the positive impact on the environment and the story waiting to be shared and you can see why people continue to embrace reclaimed wood in home design.
Sensational Stairways From a purely functional standpoint, stairways help us move from one level to another. From an aesthetic viewpoint, however, stairways are so much more. Today’s stairways grab your attention, expand the imagination and serve as a permanent artistic stamp on your home. Homeowners are elevating the status of the stairway to built-in furniture that’s highlighted and celebrated like never before. If you only have one opportunity to make a creative statement inside (or outside) your home, it should be the stairway.
Craftsman Style Radius Staircase
Incorporating elegance, drama and/or the wow factor, our clients have requested everything from rustic outdoor circular staircases to North Idaho contemporary stairwells. Of course, Craftsman-style radius staircases are still a favorite for many and, in every case, double-takes are a given. First and foremost, from classy to quirky, people are embracing options that make the space their own. They are not tied to generic norms. As new ideas emerge, we remain committed to educating ourselves and those we work with to ensure we are at the forefront when it comes to incorporating them into your home. From new elements to the tried-and-true, each home we build is as different as the owners who occupy them – and that difference is the essence of custom building.
Rammed Earth Wall

We just live in a beautiful area that offers so many different activities and a variety of entertainment and restaurants. I had a client that was a CEO of a major hotel and resort company. When he chose to have us build him a home here, I asked him why? He had lived in all of the finest resort areas in the world, and I just wanted to understand why North Idaho out of all of them. His response was this:

“Coeur d’Alene is first at nothing. It doesn’t have the best ski resort in the world. It doesn’t have the best lake in the world. It doesn’t have the best golf in the world. Coeur d’Alene isn’t first at anything, but it IS second at EVERYTHING. Aspen has the best ski resort, but nothing else. Pebble Beach has the best golf course, but nothing else. Coeur d’Alene has the best four-season climate, and the secondbest of EVERYTHING ELSE.” —Andy Smith (member of 15 years) 43
