A message from GRV’s Chair, Peita Duncan. Welcome to a special edition of Greyhound Monthly Victoria for December 2020 and January 2021. It has been a truly eventful year for our sport both in terms of the challenges we faced and how the greyhound community responded to those challenges. To keep racing under extremely difficult and at times stringent requirements was testament to the dedication, commitment, patience and passion we all share for our sport. All of Victoria’s greyhound racing community rallied, from participants and their families, frontline staff at race meetings, clubs and volunteers at the track and, at GAP. On behalf of the GRV Board and team, we give heartfelt thanks for this truly remarkable effort by everyone. We also delivered the biggest racing program in Victorian history with 26 meetings a week by the end of the year which attracted record wagering and new national and international broadcast slots. Off the track, we continued to be a world leader in integrity and welfare, taking significant steps forward in safer racing and finding homes for thousands of retired racers. For 2021 and beyond, GRV will continue to ensure it provides a safe work environment for participants, their dogs, clubs, and GRV staff. We will continue to grow both the race program and prizemoney pool to increase returns to participants. You will also see further investment in club infrastructure and safe racing including an increased effort in making GRV’s own processes more user-friendly for participants. Finally, we wish you a safe, prosperous and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and look forward to seeing everyone back at the track in 2021.
CEO's Update. Firstly, I would like to thank everyone involved in Victorian greyhound racing for how you all came together to work in a very collegiate way through what has been the most challenging year in our sport’s history. All this effort is now paying off as COVID restrictions lift and Victoria’s greyhound racing clubs open up again for all participants and spectators. However, I do ask you to keep following club directions about attendee limits and density requirements for indoor and closed spaces and to keep wearing masks indoors and make regular use of hand sanitisers. And as part of this easing of restrictions, I am pleased to announce that TAB outlets and book-makers are now returning to clubs as well.
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA DECEMBER 2020
If you can’t make it to the track but want to keep on top of all the action, GRV’s Watchdog app is being continually upgraded with new features like race card refresh, compatibility for 13+ races and more Surepick data rolled out last month and there will be more upgrades by the end of the year. And there is now also more coverage and more races. Sky Racing’s broadcasts of our Saturday morning meetings is now joined by coverage of three additional Victorian meetings a week on Sky Racing 1. In addition, a trial of 13 races will soon begin at some clubs with these meetings tailored to give greyhounds more opportunities to gain a start while boosting revenue and returns to participants. One major racing highlight we can look forward to in the coming year is the new Traralgon track, which is on schedule to be completed by mid-2021. It will follow Horsham as one of the most advanced greyhound tracks in the world, setting new standards as a safe workplace for racing dogs and with a design that adds an exciting new option to Victoria’s racetrack collection. While it is great to be out in the sun again, it is also a reminder that the hottest time of the year is nearly on us. So, it is very important that all kennels and other greyhound facilities have fire management plans in place and have the location of their nearest registered Local Evacuation centre included in their EHMP. Luckie's life-changing cup triumph By Gerard Guthrie A greyhound racing dream came true for Luckie Karabitsakos when his brilliant sprinter Hard Style Rico unforgettably smashed the Sandown Park 515m track record in the Group 1 TAB Melbourne Cup Final. It was a fifth appearance in a Group 1 event for Hard Style Rico, which Pearcedale-based Karabitsakos also bred and owns, with his best previous finish coming when runner-up to Simon Told Helen in the Maturity Classic. While Karabitsakos had to bide his time in the quest for Group 1 glory, it was undoubtedly worth the wait. Hard Style Rico overcame box five against an all-star field in a sensational all-the-way victory, clocking 28.909s, eclipsing Hooked On Scotch’s previous course record of 28.939s, established in the 2019 Melbourne Cup heats. “What an experience. I’m speechless,” said an ecstatic Karabitsakos. “This is the greatest race to be in and to have the dog win it and to win it in track record time speaks for itself.” Hard Style Rico won his Cup heat in a blistering 29.17s, being shaded for qualifying honours by Tiggerlong Tonk’s 29.16s performance. Despite his awkward draw, Hard Style Rico was wellsupported, starting on the third line of betting at $5.70, behind $2.40 favourite Simon Told Helen and Western Australian pinup Tommy Shelby at $5.20. Karabitsakos was celebrating a long way from home after Hard Style Rico flew out to assume control, running 4.99s early. He was never going to be beaten from that point, defeating a gallant Simon Told Helen by 5.5 lengths, with Tommy Shelby running third.
“What a great feeling,” said Karabitsakos. “Emotions did run wild. I felt like I was fighting Mike Tyson and I was winning! “As soon as he found the front – no disrespect to the other dogs in the field, they’re all great dogs – but as soon as he found the front I know how good he is and they weren’t catching him.” Hard Style Rico, a homebred son of Bella Infrared, has now won 21 of his 40 starts, having also claimed the Group 2 Shepparton Cup, while the massive $435,000 winner’s purse saw his earnings skyrocket to $632,530.
TAB Melbourne Cup night was the conclusion of the inaugural Metro Festival of Racing, incorporating five nights of racing at The Meadows and Sandown Park during November with almost $2 million in prize money being distributed. It was the second time this month that Hard Style Rico has upstaged Simon Told Helen, having also claimed the Australian Greyhound of the Year’s scalp in the Group 3 Silver Bullet at The Meadows, making a point after being left out of the Group 1 Topgun field. The Karabitsakos family are becoming well-attuned to Group 1 success at Sandown, with Luckie’s brother Anthony guiding Black Mumbo to victory in the 2017 Harrison-Dawson. It’s very much a family affair, with Hard Style Rico’s mother, Bella Rico, being a litter sister to Black Mumbo.

Shima’s shining Topgun breakthrough By Gerard Guthrie
Victorian star Shima Shine claimed an overdue Group 1 breakthrough on one of Australian greyhound racing’s greatest stages with a memorable all-the-way victory in the TAB Topgun (525m) at The Meadows.
On debut in Victoria, Western Australian Tommy Shelby started $3.20 favourite from box one, shading Australian Greyhound of the Year Simon Told Helen at $3.40 from box eight.
Contesting the invitation-only Topgun for the second time, having run sixth to Get It Gizmo in 2019, it was an anomaly that Shima Shine didn’t yet have a Group success on his resume.
Shima Shine came out running and set up his victory when holding out Simon Told Helen in the allimportant run to the first turn.
Trained by Andrea Dailly, the son of Barcia Bale is raced by long-time breeding partners David Gleeson and Bob Cummings, who’ve enjoyed feature race success with Shima Shine’s mother Shima Song, a two-time Group 2 winner of the Geelong Cup and McKenna Memorial, and the likes of Shimaguni and Shima Bar. And at his seventh appearance in a Group event, Shima Shine finally delivered on his enormous talent and continued the proud family tradition. “He’s had a few things go wrong but he’s right tonight and he showed them what he can really do,” said delighted cotrainer George Dailly. “You can’t knock the dog. He’s got two track records (Ballarat 450m and Bendigo 425m) and he could have held four. He’s a serious dog.” Drawn in box two, Shima Shine started on the third line of betting at $5.10.
Shima Shine shone in the Topgun; here with George Dailly.
10
Shima Shine and Simon Told Helen then broke clear of the chasing pack as Shima Shine kept going strongly to deny the gallant Simon Told Helen, scoring by 2.5 lengths in a scorching 29.67s, equalling his Meadows personal best. Christo Bale finished strongly to grab third place ahead of Tommy Shelby, completing a Victorian trifecta. It was Shima Shine’s 25th win from 40 starts and he’s racing in peak form at the right time of the year, having won six of his last eight starts. “He was in this race last year but he got seriously hurt at the first turn and he wasn’t the same dog for six months,” George Dailly explained. “It took forever to get him right but he’s come good and he’s racing well. “Things haven’t worked out for him but they worked out good tonight!”
Community clubs share in $10,000 in TAB Melbourne Cup sweep
Record wagering, the biggest racing program to date, 2,542 greyhounds rehomed and major new media initiatives were some of the highlights in Greyhound Racing Victoria’s (GRV) 2019-20 Annual Report, which was tabled in the Victorian Parliament on 10 December 2020.
Eight regional Victorian community clubs have added to their clubs fundraising efforts with a share in $10,000 from the Greyhound Clubs Victoria (GCV) TAB Melbourne Cup Community Sweep last Friday at Sandown Park.
National wagering turnover on Victorian greyhound racing in 2019-20 reached a new record $2.6 billion, up 10% on last year. Victoria’s greyhound racing program expanded to 1,198 race meetings over the year, including new events such as the inaugural SEN National Straight Track Championship, the innovative State-of-Origin event between Victoria and South Australia, ‘GR8 8’ special events and the Bendigo Battlers Cup. And in a historic first for Australian greyhound racing, GRV partnered with SKY Racing to broadcast Saturday morning meetings and then with Sky Racing World and TAB to broadcast Victorian greyhound racing throughout the USA. GRV Chair, Peita Duncan, said these outcomes were achieved despite a range of challenges including a canine gastroenteritis outbreak, extreme weather conditions and bushfires and COVID-19. “During the COVID restrictions, GRV committed to maintaining prizemoney levels and racing schedules to ensure the livelihood of thousands of people and hundreds of local suppliers, many in regional Victoria, and the welfare of thousands of dogs,” Ms Duncan said, GRV’s CEO Alan Clayton said that like many other organisations across Australia, it was a financially challenging year for GRV and the clubs as TAB retail outlets were closed and track attendance limited.

BY BERNADETTE DILLON
This was a state-wide initiative by the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club involving all 11 regional Victorian greyhound clubs. GRV, Sandown GRC and GCV came together to create the Community Clubs sweep for the TAB Melbourne Cup with $10,000 as a total prize pool. A total of 64 regional community clubs appreciated the opportunity to be associated with these elite greyhounds, by being randomly allocated a greyhound in the Melbourne Cup heats, for the chance to boost their 2020 fundraising efforts. Our state-wide finalists, from Rosedale to Warrnambool, have all been active on social media creating content that is fun and engaging. Clubs have thrown their full support behind their dogs, using the COVID restrictions to get creative when promoting their runner in the Cup. The community and sporting clubs in the sweep have given our regional greyhound racing clubs an opportunity to partner with their local community and strengthen the linkage to the world’s greatest greyhound race. GCV Chairman Adrian Scott said: “What a wonderful success the community sweep has been, with community clubs benefiting from the initiative with the distribution of $10,000 in prize money. It is sensational to see the spirit of regional clubs, as they are the heartbeat of many country towns and we will continue to support them in the future.” Mark Taylor from East Warrnambool Rotary Club, who drew the favourite and eventual runner-up Simon Told Helen said: “We were pleased to be selected for the Sweep as it strengthens our relationship with the Warrnambool GRC, who support us in many ways. Any fundraising in the current environment is always appreciated and the money will go straight back into our local community.” The following Clubs will share in the $10,000 prize pool: Anakie Football Netball Club Bacchus Marsh Golf Club Bendigo City Bulldogs Sports Club Dennington Pony Club East Warrnambool Rotary Club Ellinbank & District Football League Rosedale Kilmany Cricket Club Stratford Football Netball Club

“However, GRV’s ability to offer a consistent and trusted wagering product when many other sports were shut down helped ensure a good financial outcome for the year and we are well placed for future growth,” Mr Clayton said.

Mepunga Blazer (L) and Mepunga Cruzer flanking Jeff Britton
Straws to go with Warrnambool Oaks and Derby winners BY MOLLY HAINES
The stud dogs of Warrnambool – Mepunga Blazer, Mepunga Cruzer and Lightning Frank – will have straws donated to the winners of the Warrnambool Oaks and Derby which will be run on 21st and 28th of January. The winning connections of the Warrnambool Derby will take home the $7,500 first prize and a Lightning Frank straw. Lightning Frank, a winner of 22 races from 47 starts, is a son of Black Magic Opal and Kirabilli Abbie. Trained by Matthew Wright, Lightning Frank claimed the Group 1 Temlee and the Group 1 Silver Chief, both at The Meadows. Lightning Frank currently stands at stud for $1,100. But the winning connections of the Warrnambool Derby will receive one free. “The Club has been good to us, so we are really happy to be able to give back,” Wright said. “There are limited numbers on the ground but from all reports and from the pups I have had they are easy to break in and have really good natures.” The Warrnambool Oaks winner, which will take home $7,500, will also be the lucky recipient of a Mepunga Blazer and Mepunga Cruzer straw courtesy of local breeder and Hall of Fame inductee Barry Smith.
Mepunga Cruzer was unbeaten in four career starts which includes an impressive 25.01sec effort over the 450m at Warrnambool. “Cruzer tore a triangle and a back muscle at a young age,” trainer and stud master Jeff Britton said. “He is on another come back but we are taking things slow.” “Cruzer is the fastest ‘breaker’ I have ever had. He went 17.25sec at Geelong and 29.87sec first look at The Meadows and he is faster early than Blazer.” Mepunga Blazer was a winner of 13 races from 25 starts which includes victory in the Group 1 Maturity Classic at The Meadows. Blazer ($2,200) and Cruzer ($1,100) are both sons of Barcia Bale and Mepunga Nicky, but from different litters.

Summer has begun and it has been preceded by high rainfall and excellent vegetation growth. As the temperatures have warmed up through November, the vegetation is now beginning to start drying out. Participants need to be prepared for fire season. Now is the time to get your fire plans in order and avoid leaving things until the last minute:
☐
On bigger properties, a clearing of about 10 metres of well-mown grass around your home and kennel block is advisable
☐
Walk around your home and remove piles of fine fuels such as leaves. It will probably be where embers will land
☐
Check your gutters to make sure leaves haven’t built up – check your home, kennels and other shedding
☐
Make sure you remove any fuels from around windows and doors. These are the most vulnerable parts of the home and kennel area
☐
Prepare or review your fire plan, including evacuation options
☐
Make sure trees on your property are healthy with no dead limbs and no vegetation underneath them
☐
If you choose to take your greyhounds with you, you must contact your local Municipal Council now to find out which of their evacuation centres will allow dogs and add the address and details to your plan. ** Please do NOT rely on your local greyhound club to open in the event of an emergency. They may not be allowed to operate as an evacuation centre under local government laws. You MUST use the local council evacuation centres, and these need to be recorded in your EHMP. GRV will work with GCV to provide a list of registered evacuation centres.
☐
Ensure your insurance is sufficient and current
☐
Prepare a greyhound evacuation kit, including, leads, muzzles, bedding, first aid kit, food and water bowls, 3 days of dry food and bottles of water. Make sure you include any medication your greyhound may need. Have your kit in a central location so it can be quickly loaded into your car
☐
If you have transport crates, ensure they are clean, in good working order and easy to access
☐
Practise your emergency evacuation plan at least once before the hot, dry weather arrives.
☐
Remove doormats from around the house and kennel areas
☐
Move combustible outdoor furniture and other items from decks, up against, or under the home or your kennel area
☐
Move pot plants a few metres from the home or kennel area
☐

CEO Alan Clayton's report (continued)
On the subject of welfare, I am pleased to announce increased funding for the Greyhound Re-covery Initiative (GRI). All greyhounds with a GRI-eligible injury can now receive up to $2,000 towards off-track veterinary costs, up from $1,500. GRV has also introduced a new rehabilitation grant of up to $500 paid directly to the owner to support recovery and additional veterinary costs. Eligibility requirements for the GRI remain the same and the initial off-track GRI consultation is fully funded regardless of diagnosis and treatment options. And if you have greyhounds that you are planning to re-home soon, GAP has places still available in January and demand for these wonderful dogs remains strong. Finally, I would like to restate how profoundly grateful I am for how Victorian greyhound racing rose to the occasion this year. To keep racing under the circumstances of 2020 was a real privi-lege for the code and one that was earned by how everyone worked together. I thank you all: participants and your families, clubs, Greyhound Clubs Victoria, all race day staff, from stewards and vets to kennel attendants and catchers. I also thank the thousands of volunteers at the clubs, the race meetings and at GAP. I wish you a safe, prosperous and happy holiday season and I’ll see you at the track next year.

And I also remind you that GRV’s recently updated Hot Weather and Transport Policies are now in force and you can and should find out more at: greyhoundcare.grv.org. au/policies-and-guidance. Another issue that participants should be aware of is that New Zealand is currently in the middle of a widespread and severe Kennel Cough outbreak. While there do not appear to be any Kennel Cough cases in Victoria at the moment, I ask you all to remain vigilant for any signs of Kennel Cough and report any cases to GRV. Any greyhounds that have not been vaccinated for Kennel Cough in the last 6-12 months should be re-vaccinated now.

Sandown Park Greyhound Racing Club Manager Profile: Adrian Scott Adrian was born in Mirboo North in Gippsland where he lived until late primary school years, when he, his parents and four sisters moved to Boronia. On completion of secondary school Adrian decided to join Victoria Police Force, commencing in the Police Academy in June 1979. He remained in the force for 20 years, working both in metropolitan and country areas. In 2000, he purchased an agricultural business in west Gippsland dealing in which he ran for about 6 years. After selling the business he was employed by a major Australian seed company as a Regional Business Manager for Tasmania and Gippsland. In 2014 he was appointed Manager of the Warragul Greyhound Racing Club where he worked until March 2020, when he then took over the position of CEO at Sandown. Throughout his time in the greyhound industry Adrian has been passionate about the advancement of the 13 greyhound Clubs. He was instrumental in the formation of Greyhound Clubs Victoria, becoming the inaugural Chairman. He has worked exceptionally hard in the last 3 years to ensure Greyhound Clubs Victoria has a strong voice and works collaboratively with GRV to enhance the performance of the 13 clubs. Residing in a small country town has seen Adrian develop a very strong community spirit. He’s a Life Member and former President of the Nar Nar Goon Football Club as well as being a founding Board member of the recently reformed West Gippsland Football Netball competition. This has kept Adrian in close contact with the ‘grass roots’ sport. Adrian and his wife Christine have a new addition to the household, Shadow - a retired racing greyhound - who has made himself completely at home in the paddocks and house. Keep up the great work Adrian
Fun Fact - with Neil Brown There have been three standouts to race at the three MGRA venues. Starting at North Melbourne, a tricky oval circuit which observers from that era state without contradiction that champion chaser Rookie Rebel was almost unbeatable. He won on many occasions including an outstanding win in the 1957 Australian Cup. He was a great railer and North Melbourne suited his style of racing, but as the late George Schofield said of the best dog he ever saw race “Rookie had track sense like no other. He would look above the other dogs for the best passage.” Rookie Rebel 67 starts for 36 wins and 23 placings. At Olympic Park there were many outstanding dogs one favourite was Striding Ahead, but there was none better than Temlee, he raced on 37 occasions for 25 wins. He was the undisputed ‘King of Olympic Park’. He won 13 races from 19 starts on Swan Street’s No. 2 Oval – including the 1974 National Sprint Championship, 1974 Maturity and a 29.67sec track record in 1974, a mark that stood for 10 years. Another mad railer, he was never beaten from box one. Unfortunately, Temlee’s race career came to an abrupt halt when he cracked a bone in his left hind leg at Olympic Park. However, he became arguably the best stud dog of all time. Some of his early champions he produced included Satan’s Legend, Tempix, Tangaloa, Chief Dingaan, World Acclaim and Roy Trease. At Meadows again we have seen superstars win many features over the past 20 years but for sheer versatility there has been none better that Fanta Bale. The daughter of David Bale and Ucme Typhoon retired with a record $1,365,175 in prize money. She won 42 of her 63 career starts, contesting 22 group finals, winning 13 including a record nine group 1’s. The Queen of the Meadows won five of those group 1 finals on her favourite track. The 2016 Hume Cup (600m), 2017 Rookie Rebel (600m), 2017 Australian Cup (525m), 2018 Zoom Top (725m) and 2018 Super Stayers (725m). Overall, she raced at the Meadows 12 times for 10 wins and one placing. Three immortal stars that shone over 60 years. For the full history read more - https://gcv.org.au/locations/sandown

What is antibiotic resistance?
FEATURE
Gastroenteritis and Appropriate Use of Antibiotics – GRV Veterinary Services Diarrhoea in greyhounds: Earlier in the year, the greyhound industry was significantly impacted by a nationwide outbreak of gastroenteritis caused by the gut (enteric) form of canine coronavirus (no relation to COVID-19 and cannot be spread to humans). In most cases it caused a self-resolving mild gastrointestinal illness (vomiting, diarrhoea, poor appetite), but some trainers reported a reduction in performance that lasted several weeks. The disease had implications for greyhound health and welfare and impacted the racing population with participants unable to race their greyhounds. Just like the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in humans, testing is an important part of any outbreak control strategy. Many greyhounds had their faeces sampled and tested for different infectious agents that identified the cause of disease, rather than guessing and providing unnecessary treatments.
Causes of Diarrhoea: While infection may often be thought of as a primary cause, there are many different reasons a greyhound can develop diarrhoea, including dietary indiscretion, a change in diet, ingestion of spoilt food or a toxin, food sensitivity or irritable bowel, stress, or as a side-effect of certain medications. In most cases, including those of infectious diarrhoea, routine antibiotic treatment is not required.
Many greyhounds will test positive for Campylobacter and Salmonella on faecal samples. These bacteria do not always cause illness, and antibiotic treatment will only be required in exceptional circumstances. They can however be spread between greyhounds or though ingestion of and contact with raw meat. They have the potential to also infect humans. Viruses, including parvovirus and coronavirus, are not normally found in the gastrointestinal tract of greyhounds and cannot be killed by antibiotics. In some cases, your vet may prescribe antibiotics to treat a secondary bacterial infection, especially if there is a secondary overgrowth of resident bacteria or more severe symptoms are present. Giardia is a parasite and is usually transmitted via contact with faeces or through faecal contaminated water. Your vet will be able to diagnose infection from a faecal sample and provide treatment recommendations.
It is easy to think that if you are giving antibiotics to a greyhound with diarrhoea that it was the medication that led to an improvement; actually, diarrhoea will resolve on its own within two or three days in most cases. Using antibiotics inappropriately may not harm the greyhound but increases the risk that antibiotic resistance develops. This is because antibiotics will only kill the bacteria that are sensitive to the drug; the resistant bacteria are the ones that can survive and multiply. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria occurring in animals can spread between animals and to humans, which may lead to infections that are difficult to treat. As an example, a recent case of severe pneumonia in a greyhound, cultured bacteria that were resistant to lincomycin, which has been commonly used in greyhounds for many decades. It is therefore extremely important that antibiotics are used prudently and only under the direction of your veterinarian, which includes using them at the dosage and duration prescribed. Antibiotics should only be used where necessary and the correct antibiotic to treat the likely or known infection should be selected by your veterinarian (which may require culture and sensitivity testing). Correct use of antibiotics will mean that in the future we are able to continue to improve animal welfare by treating and preventing bacterial infection and, also, to ensure that human medicine continues to have antibiotics that work. Note: If you have old / expired, non-prescribed, or left-over personal antibiotics in your kennels, you should discard them appropriately, along with any other prohibited substances not possessed in accordance with the Rules. GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA DECEMBER 2020
Whenever there are multiple greyhounds affected on the same property, or that have been in contact with others affected by a gastrointestinal illness, it is reasonable to suspect an infectious cause. Infections may be from a virus, bacteria or parasite. Studies have shown that dogs carry many different infectious agents in their gastrointestinal tract, so it can often be difficult to distinguish which one is responsible for causing the observed illness.
World Antimicrobial Awareness Week was 18-24 November and antibiotic resistance is important for us all to be aware of. Antibiotics are substances used to kill bacteria or to stop them from growing and multiplying. Antibiotic resistance is defined as the ability of a bacteria to resist the action of antibiotics. This means bacterial replication will not be inhibited or the bacteria will not be killed.

With successful seasons leading up to 2020, the NCAV were looking forward to a bumper coursing season in 2020, but what curve balls life can throw at us! The spread of Coronavirus, or COVID-19, around Australia in the early months of 2020 threw everything in jeopardy and at more than one stage we didn’t even know if there would be a coursing season. A month out from the season’s scheduled first meeting, and at a time when Tasmanian Racing had been shut down, and the AFL after only one round had called a timeout on their season, the tough decision to defer the commencement of the season was made. At the time, the first wave of COVID-19 was shutting many industries and businesses down and whilst Victorian racing was continuing, it was only under strict protocols and with considerable change to racing as we knew it. The Strathbogie Shire refused to allow the Longwood club to operate, despite the Victorian Government approval and no end of calls and emails could change their minds. The thoroughbred picnic season was discontinued and the NCAV’s fate appeared to be going down the same path with even club trials closed down for a number of weeks. After a number of meetings with GRV racing and integrity officials, we were able to reach agreement on the necessary protocols required to be put in place at clubs to allow us to restart the season with only the loss of the ‘Catch on to Coursing’ picnic meeting and two maiden meetings. Unfortunately, the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions in Victoria meant the planned lure system replacement at the Benalla track was not possible in time for the 2020 season, with workers unable the travel from interstate.
The 2020 year has been one of utter turmoil around the world with COVID-19 changing every part of our lives. The 2020 coursing season, whilst requiring travel permits to go further than 5kms from our homes, brought a sense of normality back to many whose lives were turned upside down. My sincere thanks go to the many that volunteered when many of the normal Club volunteers were unable to leave their homes. To the GRV Stewards, especially Ashleigh Curry, who ran our coursing season with control and understanding in the most difficult season.
To our joint Secretaries Mel and Sean Lithgow, who went above and beyond, to ensure our season went ahead, even to the extent of organising Zoom meetings for the NCAV Executive throughout the season. I’m sure you didn’t expect anything like what the 2020 season presented but the way it was handled is a credit to you both. To my Executive at the NCAV, I thank you for the diligence and enthusiasm with which you approached your duties in this most difficult year. Special thanks goes to Heather Villinger who stepped into the breach and took on the role of Grader for this season. Heather took on the difficult duties, ensuring a coursing season, while at the same time coaching new GRV personnel in Coursing procedures. To our sponsors, I must thank them for the strong support we continue to get through this difficult time from the Cranbourne and Sale Greyhound racing clubs as well as the MGRA and Sandown clubs. This year saw the sad demise of one of our oldest clubs, with the Werribee Coursing Club starting the winding up procedures. To the current and past officers and volunteers at the club I thank them for their service over the years and the many happy memories forged coursing at Werribee. In an arrangement with the NCAV, we will continue to honour the Club with the Werribee Cup and JN Smith Memorial to be held annually as the open events in conjunction with the Derby and Oaks features. Whilst the Benalla Club was unable to race in 2020, we look forward to them re-joining the roster in 2021 with their new lure system and note the cable changes introduced by Benalla were an outstanding success at Lang Lang this season with not a single cable break all season. The COVID holdups have further delayed the Melton track upgrade but with the prevalence of straight tracks being developed throughout the state by GRV, it should only be a matter of time before this important training facility is reinstated. In years to come few will recall the trials and tribulations that went into the 2020 coursing season, but many will read the name Making Gravy on the Waterloo Cup trophy. Making Gravy also took out the Greyhound of the Year title with 3 wins from 4 attempts. The Coursing Bitch of the Year was a tie between Gotham Princess and Julana. Congratulations to all connections on a wonderful effort in this most difficult season. To Brian Fothergill and John Bosnich, congratulations on great seasons, sharing the Trainers spoils, and to the SMKN Syndicate, congratulations on winning Owner of the Year. Now with less than two weeks until the end of 2020, it is hard to imagine the 2021 coursing season will be untouched by COVID-19, but I hope everyone stays healthy and we can meet again in slips in 2021. Yours in coursing, Peter Craig, President National Coursing Association of Victoria Inc.
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA DECEMBER 2020
The season eventually got underway at Lang Lang on May 31st. A fortnight later at Longwood, the Derby and Oaks were run for the first time over consecutive Sundays and numbers were very pleasing given the extremely trying COVID conditions. For the first time the coursing operated without a Bookmaker, and with only trainers and registered handlers on course the normal atmosphere was a lot quieter than normal. Thanks goes to the many hardworking lovers of coursing, who allowed the season to continue through to the end of August and as usual culminated in a wonderful Waterloo Cup, in what will be our last Waterloo Cup run over a single weekend, and probably the only one in our 144 year history, to be run without a crowd present. Special thanks must go to Clint Anderson for the way he captured the wonderful action through his lens and had the images online so quickly for those unable to attend the historic event at Lang Lang.

The Meadows Greyhound Racing Association Manager Profile: Ashley Baker Ash is a long way from home, born and raised in Cairns, where he attended the greyhound track every Thursday. Racing is in his blood. Ash studied a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Southern Queensland, majoring in economics, and in 2007 moved to Melbourne and decided to follow his one true love, racing. While continuing to work full time, his day would start at 3am with a 45-minute drive to Mornington for track work with trainer David Brideoake to learn the thoroughbred industry and bloodstock management and returning to the city by 7.30am to continue his 9-5 role as a director for Centrelink. In 2010, after two years of learning about the industry and building a network, Ash took a leap of faith and left the public service to pursue a career in the thoroughbred industry, starting a media, consultancy and bloodstock business called ThoroughComm. The business expanded rapidly with contracts with the VRC, MRC, Pakenham, Cranbourne and Mornington as well as international bloodstock consultancy in Hong Kong. Ash joins MGRA with great experience in the industry, previously a Senior Policy role with the Office of Racing in 2016 and the General Manager of the Werribee Racing Club in 2018. Ash and his wife Naomi have two boys, Atticus 7 and Jude 3 and in his spare time he is studying a Master of Sports Business and Integrity with Victoria University Ash has settled into MGRA and his is amazed at the greyhound industry and how supportive everyone is of each other. Ash and his committee have many exciting projects either underway or about to commence at the Meadows as he looks forward to shaping the future of the club. Great work Ash
Fun Facts with Neil Brown Itt was common knowledge, for many years, the two Metropolitan clubs were not the best of friends. The situation was caused by how everything started, when licences were granted to two vastly different organisations (GOTBA and the NCA). In those early days and years through the 60’s and 70’s the clubs controlled most of their destiny. There was separate grading and prize-money which could be vastly different as it was determined by the clubs who also had different ways of promoting their races and venues. In the main it was a friendly rivalry most of the time, as each club hosted committee members of the opposite club as it is today. One night at Sandown wasn’t quite harmonious. Sandown Chairman Henry Harrison - famous for his quote “My way or the Highway” - got into a heated argument with popular MGRA Chairman Les Foran. To say the two gentlemen had different backgrounds would be an understatement. Henry took offence and was not going tolerate any more talk from his counterpart and ordered security to remove him from the course. Now Les, a resourceful character at the best of times, scoured the packed Lightwood Road Carpark until he found an electrical sub-contractor’s van with a long ladder. He removed it from the roof racks and placed the ladder up against the outside fence. Scaling to the top, he hurled abuse at Henry and wouldn't come down until removed by the local Springvale Police, summoned to put a stop to the incident. It’s fair to say their relationship remained testy for some time. I am happy to say as the current Chairman of Sandown, things are vastly different to those times. MGRA Chairman Eddie Caruana is one of my best friends and it has been my pleasure to have know him for as long as I have. For the full history read more - https://gcv.org.au/locations/meadows

GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING REPORT
BY DR GAVIN GOBLE BVSC, GENERAL MANAGER, GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING
VACCINATIONS FOR GREYHOUNDS The Code of Practice requires all greyhounds to have a current C5 vaccination. Please speak to your veterinarian about when your greyhounds are next due for a vaccination and ensure your Kennel Cough vaccine is up to date. Just a reminder that the vaccination requirements for acceptance into GAP are more specific, so please check with GRV if you are planning to get a vaccination for this purpose. These requirements are also on the GAP page of this magazine. In addition to recording your greyhound’s vaccinations in its Greyhound Record, please also provide GRV with copies of your C5 vaccination certificates for GRV to upload into FastTrack if you are considering, or are already, breeding from your greyhound. These vaccination certificates are required to keep the Pink Card active.
Increased Greyhound Recovery Initiative (GRI) funding To further reduce on-track and off-track euthanasia, GRV is pleased to announce the funding model for the GRI for serious injuries sustained during a race or a race-day trial has been extended. From 1 December 2020, all greyhounds who suffer a GRIeligible injury (or the On-Track Veterinarian suspects they might have a GRI-eligible injury) will be offered: ■
up to $2,000 towards off-track veterinary costs (increased from $1,500) AND
■
up to $500 in a NEW rehabilitation grant paid directly to the participant to support recovery from the injury (it can also be used for additional veterinary costs).
Eligibility for GRI hasn’t changed, so combined, this is an additional $1,000 available to participants in support of surgery and recovery of greyhounds with GRI-eligible injuries. It is important to point out that when a greyhound is admitted into the GRI, the initial off-track consultation is funded regardless of the diagnosis and treatment option decided by the owner and off-track veterinarian. For more information on the scheme, please speak to your OTV and visit https://greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/greyhoundrecovery-initiative/.
Kennel Cough outbreak in NZ
20
New Zealand is currently in the middle of a widespread and severe Kennel Cough outbreak, which appears to be caused by the bug Mycoplasma cynos (a recognised cause of Kennel Cough but not covered by any vaccine). It is thought to have arrived in NZ at the same time as four greyhounds from Australia, but other domestic dogs arrived at the same time, so the origin is not certain. This bug is already present in Australian greyhounds but there do not appear to be any Kennel Cough cases here at the moment.
It is critically important that all participants remain vigilant for signs of Kennel Cough and report any cases to GRV. Any greyhounds that haven’t been vaccinated for Kennel Cough in the last 6-12 months should be re-vaccinated now. Protecting them against parainfluenza and Bordetella (what’s in the Kennel Cough vaccine) will reduce the chances of them getting sick with Mycoplasma.
Hot Weather Just a quick reminder that the updated Hot Weather Policy is now in force to protect the welfare of the greyhounds over the summer. GRV asks participants to note that clause 19 now states that taking advantage of penalty-free scratching provision is a breach of the policy.
Hot Weather Policy update: From 1 January 2021, early kennelling for hot weather affected MORNING meetings will no longer be offered. Early kennelling will continue to be offered for hot weather affected Day, Twilight and Night meetings. The updated Transport Policy is also now in force. If the forecasted maximum temperature is 32°C or above at any point in the journey at any time that day, the hot weather requirements apply (i.e., mandatory air-conditioning and barking muzzles banned) regardless of the time of the day of the journey. The updated policy stipulates that the internal trailer temperature must be kept at or below 30°C (but ideally at 16 - 24°C), so the air-conditioning should be started at least 30 minutes prior to loading greyhounds into the trailer and must be kept running during travelling.
Kennel Returns In August 2019 GRV enhanced the Kennel Return functionality on FastTrack to allow a Kennel Return for all greyhounds, not just named greyhounds with a trainer. The Kennel Return is used to advise GRV of both the location of the greyhound and what it is currently doing (e.g. training, breeding, spelling etc). While spelling is usually defined as a greyhound taking a
If you plan to breed with your greyhound and you are waiting for the greyhound to come into season, you can record your greyhound’s activity as breeding. It is also important to remember that if the greyhound is changing ownership or is being retired as a pet, those changes must be processed in the usual manner (retirements) and not just recorded in a Kennel Return.
Post-whelping certificate Under the Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds, a breeding female greyhound must have a general health check by a veterinarian 6-8 weeks after whelping. GRV has created a template Post-Whelping Veterinary Certificate to support breeders in ensuring they meet the requirements of the Code of Practice. The template is available at https://greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/wp-content/ uploads/2020/12/Post-Whelping-Veterinary-Certificate-2020. pdf. Ask your veterinarian to complete the certificate when they examine your female and ensure you keep a copy as part of your Greyhound Record.
On behalf of everyone at Greyhound Adoption Program, we want to say Merry Christmas! We sincerely hope that 2021 is a prosperous year for you all. Here at GAP, 2020 has certainly brought its challenges but we are proud to say that we have been able to adapt quickly to ensure we continued finding forever homes for our beloved greyhounds. We also wanted to take this chance to let you know that behind the scenes we are busy working to ensure all your favourite GAP events can return bigger and better in 2021. GAP Seymour will be closed from December 24 and re-open January 11.

long break from racing (e.g. recovering from injury), this option can be used in a Kennel Return where none of the other options apply. For example, if a greyhound is being wound down or being re-trained in preparation for rehoming, or the greyhound is boarding with you, it is OK to select spelling as the activity.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA DECEMBER 2020 23
To assist participants with re-homing their greyhounds, spaces in the pre-entry assessment sessions are booked through Racing Services during office hours on 03 8329 1100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au. All sessions for the next 2 months are listed on this page, with later dates released each month. To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must: ■
have a current C5 vaccination as per the specific GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS described on this page given at least 10 days before the pre-entry assessment; and
■
not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“wind-down period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. The ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Racing Services or at: greyhoundcare.grv.org. au/retirement-from-racing.
Pre-entry Assessment Booking number: 03 8329 1100 Pre-entry Assessment email: gapbooking@grv.org.au
GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS Your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations: ■ Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and ■ Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine. The simplest method to achieve this is an injectable C3 vaccine plus the standard intra-nasal Kennel Cough vaccine. Note the GAP vaccination requirements are more specific than a standard injectable C5 vaccination given annually. If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements, please contact GRV.
Participants may be asked to provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP. Note: there in no fee for greyhounds being entered into GAP. The principles of the GRV Hot Weather Policy also apply to days when greyhounds are accepted into GAP. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 32 degrees or above, entry sessions may be subject to a time change. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 38 degrees or above, entry sessions will be cancelled. GRV will notify participants by phone as soon as possible for all session changes and cancellations. Wherever possible, GRV will endeavour to replace cancelled sessions with new sessions in the local area.
