‘I’m still learning how to juggle being a

WORKING MOM’ When she’s not running her own clothing boutique, playing mom to two young boys and perfecting yoga poses, our cover star, Juliana, is just like one of us!

B

razilian-born Juliana Vasconcelos, 27, is co-owner of Brazilian swim- and gym-wear boutique, Periquita, which she runs with her best friend, Jackie Hawtrey. Juliana is engaged to Top Billing’s hunky Janez Vermeiren and is mom to Vincent, 13 months, and stepmom to Matisse, 11. Having recently relocated from Cape Town to Joburg, the family is currently on the hunt for their perfect family home.

I’m so excited about an upcoming trip to Brazil. I’ll be spending a few weeks over there with my family. There’s something so special about being with family in the run-up to the festive period. After our international trip, we’ll head back to Cape Town for a few weeks. I love being able to spend weekends outdoors and on the beach, and it’s a really busy time for my business, Periquita, as sales always pick up at this time of the year. Opening a business wasn’t something I’d planned. The idea came about when my best friend, Jackie, commented on how much she always liked the sportswear and swimsuits that I brought home from my trips to Brazil. One day,

4 ESSENTIALS

she suggested we open a Brazilianinspired store right here in South Africa. Of course, I fell in love with the idea immediately. We went to Brazil, sourced the most incredible items that we knew the South African market would love and it’s proven to be a great success, with women loving what we have to offer. The fashion industry has been an important part of my life for years. I’ve worked in the industry for so long already, and now I’m able to implement everything I’ve learnt, from the buying process to dealing with customers, and put those skills to good use in my own business. Everything changed when I had Vincent last year. I had been so focused on the business, but there was a definite shift after he arrived. I want to be hands-on with both boys, continue running the boutique and still have time for myself. It’s an incredible combination, and something that most moms will know often feels impossible! It’s such an exciting time for me though and I’m slowly learning how to juggle everything. I take my hat off to all the working moms out there; it’s a difficult task and I admire any woman trying to

make it work for her family. Taking time for yourself is so important. You need to remember that before you were a mom, you were a person with interests, passions and dreams. My advice to other moms is to do something that’s just for you. That could be a regular hobby, watching your favourite TV series every week or going for a run. If you make time for youself, you’ll be a better, more balanced mom and partner. Yoga is my escape. It’s something I do on my own, and I’ve been practicing for years – it really puts me into my happy place. It can be quite time consuming, so I try to include Vincent in my yoga sessions when I can. When I’m not doing that, you’ll find me catching up with friends, watching movies, reading a good book or relaxing on the beach if there’s one nearby – just savouring the moments I have to myself!

My grandmother taught me to cook when I was growing up, and I still love being in the kitchen. Lasagne is one of our family favourites, but Janez particularly enjoys my coxinhas (shredded chicken wrapped in dough and deep fried) – it’s a real Brazlian speciality! South Africa has started to feel like home. The landscape is amazing, the people are so friendly and there’s great cultural diversity. The country reminds me a lot of Brazil, which is probably why I’ve settled in so quickly and easily. The next few months are going to be exciting! I’m looking forward to settling in Joburg, getting married and hopefully adding on to our little family. To find out more about Juliana’s business, visit periquita.co.za.

Just over a year ago, my world came crashing down around me. I’d been living what felt like a fairytale; I was married to an amazing man and we’d been together for 14 years. We lived in a beautiful house, drove expensive cars and I had only the best clothes. Our lives were perfect, or so I thought, so it was a complete shock when I discovered my husband had been cheating on me and my marriage collapsed. This was just the beginning of a very dark time in my life, where my heartbreak and sadness grew into something far more serious. My mental health began to deteriorate and my depression engulfed me. By December of last year I’d attempted suicide more than once. My situation seemed hopeless – I had forgotten what it was like to smile. My sister took charge of the situation and booked me into a psychiatric clinic, where I began treatment for severe depression.

Worried about what people would think, I chose not to share what I was going through with anyone other than my close family. I still felt like I had to keep up appearances, and I didn’t want people to judge me. I’m so thankful now that my sister saw how necessary treatment was – I’m not sure what I would have done without her help and support. After a few months at the clinic, and with the constant support of my family, I began healing and, these days, I feel like a new person. I’ve changed my look, become a lot more independent than I ever was before, and I’m so much stronger after everything I’ve been through. The biggest lesson I learnt is that a mental disorder is not something to be embarrassed about; it can happen to anyone and, often, with the right treatment, it can be managed, or even cured. The key to recovery is speaking about what you’re feeling and seeking help. Depression shouldn’t hold you back from living the life you were destined to lead.

‘The biggest lesson I learnt is that a mental health disorder could affect anyone and, with treatment, it can be managed or even cured’

AMAZING WOMEN

‘I hid my OCD for years for fear of being seen as weak’ BARBARA LLOYD, 52, LIVES ALONE AND WORKS FOR A CHARITY ORGANISATION. I was diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) at 18, but it wasn’t until 10 years later that anyone other than my family knew. I’d always made lists for all my homework, but the year after I finished school, I began to make lists for daily tasks and would check, double-check and triplecheck them. I realised what I was doing wasn’t normal, but couldn’t stop myself.

Work suffered I started work in a hospital pathology unit, doing something I loved, but would have to double-check everything so often that my colleagues thought I was being lazy and avoiding work. I was terrified to tell anyone about my condition in case they thought I was weak. When it came out that one of the women I worked with had mental health problems, our colleagues were so derogatory that it made me more terrified my condition would come out. The atmosphere at work became so horrible that I left for another job. But the stress was the same and I didn’t trust myself with the work, so I left that job, too. At the end of my tether, I started going to church and found for the first time

I could be honest about my condition. There were other people with mental health problems so I felt like I could finally just be myself. I did get married in 1993, but family life was very hard with my OCD. I battle with a number of different things, including contamination, hoarding, rituals and checking, among others, and it played a large part in our divorce in 2012. Over the years, my symptoms have got worse. I don’t like sharing a toilet, so I don’t have people over. I also find it hard to leave the house because my routine of checking and doublechecking that everything is in the right place, clean or locked always makes me late. One of my biggest regrets was not being able to see my parents more before they passed away. Occasionally, I do go out to see a friend or to a social gathering. Unlike when I was younger, I feel I have a voice now and I can use it to help raise awareness for other people with my condition. There is still a stigma, but I hope it will dissolve, because mental health is no different to physical health – the brain is still an organ that can get ill in the same way a kidney can.

‘My friends don’t know I’ve got ADHD’ SANDRA SCOTT, 47, LIVES WITH HER HUSBAND, GED, 46, AND THEIR 16-YEAR-OLD SON. SHE WORKS IN THE EDUCATION SECTOR. I’ve always realised that my brain was different, but I had no idea I was suffering from attention deďŹ cit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). When I was a child I was forever on the go. If my mom looked the other way, I’d be making a bird cake out of the contents of the cupboard, or cutting off the cat’s whiskers – and I was always in trouble at school. I have the ability to hyper-focus on subjects I love so, although I failed my exams in the subjects I had no interest in, I’d get straight As in the ones I liked. I ended up studying modern European

languages and now I can speak ďŹ ve! After getting my degree, I went on to work at a school for children with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties, and the kids used to say to me, ‘Mrs Scott, you’ve got ADHD like us!’ I used to laugh, but when I did some more research, it clicked that I had all the symptoms. I decided to go and get tested last year and the psychiatrist conďŹ rmed that not only did I have it, I was at the top of the scale.

everyone’s symptoms are different, we still have to try to manage them and ďŹ t into society. At ďŹ rst I did try medication, but it made me so drowsy that I almost felt hung-over, so I decided to selfmanage. After all, I’d been self-managing all my life without knowing it! I’ve come up with tactics, like sitting on my hands during meetings to stop myself ďŹ dgeting and setting reminders on my phone so I don’t miss important appointments. In my adult life, I feel as though my ADHD has been quite a positive thing. When my son was younger it meant I was able to be constantly on the go with him, going out to the park or visiting museums. Now, working in education, I ďŹ nd my days are always varied and interesting, and I get to do something I’m passionate about. I’m lucky to be able to sleep six hours a night, too, as lots of people with ADHD struggle to sleep, but when I wake up in the morning, I jump straight out of bed and I’m on the go. I do feel that if I had known about my condition earlier, I would have been better equipped to cope with it. There’s still a stigma, and often ADHD isn’t picked up in women because it’s usually associated with violence and aggression, which isn’t always the way it manifests itself, particularly in girls. In fact, there are probably loads of women my age out there who are described as ‘dizzy’ or ‘forgetful’ when they may well have ADHD, but just haven’t realised it. The only people who know about my diagnosis are my close family and my work colleagues, so I’m officially outing myself in Essentials! When my friends read this article, they’re all going to go, ‘Ah, well that makes sense!’

‘If I had known about my condition earlier, I would have been better equipped to cope with it’

We still need to fit in At work, we teach the kids with ADHD that a diagnosis gives a reason for things, but not an excuse. Although

‘I saw postnatal depression as a cry for attention’

ALEXANDRA CHEKETRI, 27, LIVES WITH HER HUSBAND, DELON, AND TWO SONS, DANIEL, THREE, AND 21-MONTH-OLD JORDAN. My husband and son, Daniel, had just left the hospital to go back home. I’d given birth to our second son, Jordan, and all my visitors had left for the evening. Jordan was fast asleep, when I remember suddenly feeling all alone. I couldn’t control the feeling of loneliness – so much so that I burst out crying and couldn’t stop. I knew that it was common to get the ‘baby blues’ after having a child, and having been absolutely ďŹ ne after my ďŹ rst born, I convinced myself that baby blues was all it was. However, as the days went by, tasks that would ordinarily have put a smile on any mother’s face had no effect on me. Feeding Jordan, or having Daniel visit me in hospital with a big smile on his face did nothing to lift my mood. Nothing seemed to make a difference to the anxiety and loneliness. After being home for a few weeks, I woke up one morning and couldn’t get out of bed. My husband and my father both tried to get me up, and I even heard my boys crying for me, but nothing could persuade me to get out from under the covers. It was frightening, and was what made me decide it was time to see my GP, who referred me to a psychiatrist. The diagnosis was postnatal depression (PND). I wasn’t surprised by my diagnosis, but I was so ashamed that I kept it to myself. There’s still such a negativity attached to it; often people think you’re just weak and unable to cope, or that you’re looking for attention. Now I know that none of that is true. I was placed on medication for a year and with the patience and support given to me by my family, I’m now back to my bubbly old self. I’m so grateful for both of my little boys and consider myself to be one of the luckiest moms in the world. What I learnt about having PND is to appreciate every moment, and to only focus my attention on the things that really matter. No one is perfect, and that’s okay. You just do your best to be a good daughter, wife and mother, and your family and friends will love you unconditionally for it.

It was 2004, and I waved her off to school, stomach rolling, knowing that she was becoming more silent and isolated, and that what she faced at school was intolerable. But I sent her anyway, because I didn’t know what else to do. My daughter was born male. Or rather, she was outwardly male. The first of my children, Jack, was a healthy baby boy and I was delighted. At that point, I thought I knew what to expect. He crawled when expected, he walked when expected. All unremarkable, but for me, it was just like watching the sun come up when he smiled. Then, when he was around 18 months, I noticed that he was gravitating towards my clothes. Pulling my skirts out of the cupboard, putting my

bra on over the top of his clothes. Cute perhaps, but not an issue. I was his main carer, so of course he’d emulate me.

Not Dad’s little boy Still, his dad was disappointed that he didn’t want to play with balls or cars. When he opened his presents on his second birthday, the Lego and Thomas the Tank Engine were quickly shoved to one side, and he wanted to watch the video of The Little Mermaid over and over again. When we visited families who

had ‘girl toys’, he was in his element, so I began to ask what he wanted rather than just buying what was expected of a little boy. By the time he started nursery school he had his own Barbie dolls. And it was still cute, because he would grow out of it, or maybe just be a girly boy. Or maybe he would be gay. All fine, no panic needed. When Jack was four, and he told me God had made a mistake, and he should have been a girl, I KNEW. And I was terrified. I wished every day, with all my being, for it to go away. I told him it was okay to be a boy who liked girl things, but he was disgusted, insisting he was a girl. I told him he was wrong and hoped it would just stop. But it didn’t. Instead, my happy, bright little boy became isolated and lonely. The girls stopped wanting to play with him, and he didn’t have anything in common with the boys. School staff would tell me they were worried because Jack spent playtimes wandering around on his

own or in the classroom with a teacher. Then, at six, he asked me when he could have the operation to make him a girl and I knew I needed help. But the GP was clueless, and I felt totally adrift. A friend told me to visit a specialised clinic that dealt with kids with gender problems. So I went back to the GP and she put the wheels in motion. Around the same time, I found a charity offering support to transgender children on the internet and phoned the helpline. I spoke to a woman named Lin, and so many of the things I spoke about, she echoed. Her daughter was 18, but we had so many common experiences. I didn’t feel so alone any more and I started to think that maybe this was not a phase. Eventually, I agreed to take Jack shopping for girls’ clothes. His utter delight at being allowed to buy a Barbie top was indescribable – although the disapproval I felt from everyone in that shop is still fresh in my mind.

Jack became Jackie Jack began to tell schoolmates that he had a girl brain in a boy body, and the clinic even came to his school to give training on gender dysphoria. And when she turned 10 years old she began school as a girl named Jackie, with hair gradually grown longer over the last six months and a girl’s uniform. It was her best year. She was protected and thrived. I thought we had cracked it.

WHAT YOU THINK MOM ALWAYS KNOWS BEST ‘I would worry that in some cases the child might change their mind as they get older, but a parent would know what’s best for their own child.’ Sheena Mitchell

But the next year at a new school was a nightmare. Within a day, the news that a ‘trannie’ was in school had spread far and wide. The school wanted to pretend it wasn’t happening and refused to do any diversity education. Instead, bullies were given a slapped wrist, and the abuse began. She was subjected to kicks, punches, spat at full in the face, her skirt lifted in front of a crowd. And so came the first of many overdoses. I was on suicide watch for three years. Medicines were locked up, knives were hidden. Every call was a moment of terror in case it was the one that would tell me she had succeeded. Once, in the ambulance, she told me she wanted to die and come back as a proper girl or a proper boy, not this freak. I knew my daughter needed some form of

medication; I don’t think she would be here if she had gone through a male puberty. The beginning stages had her reaching for razor blades to cut herself to dull the sensations and distract her from her body changing. So at the age of 13, I took her to the States, to Dr Norman Spack who prescribed puberty blockers and the female hormone oestrogen. He is my hero – he saved her life. Three years later, on her sixteenth birthday, we flew overseas, where she had gender reassignment surgery. I know there will be people out there who will read this, and will probably judge what I did as child abuse – that she was too young to know. I don’t really care. Today, I have a bright, intelligent and funny 21-year-old daughter. If I had refused to listen to her, then I have no doubt I would be mourning a dead son.

GET YOUR OWN WAY AT WORK

To win your team’s respect, you have to make sure they have confidence in your abilities. Constantly doubting yourself at work is not the way to do this, but neither is trying to make out you know it all. If there are areas of your job where you’re not confident, don’t try to hide them and let things spiral out of your control. Instead, get help from a colleague who has the expertise, or ask your boss about training. Don’t skip lunch According to a recent survey*, nearly half of workers eat lunch at their desk and more than 1 in 10 admit they do it to impress their boss. Yet every efficiency expert will tell you that workers are more productive if they take a lunch break. ‘Taking a break from work has many benefits,’ says behavioural and work ethic expert Karen Meager. ‘Switching your mind away from work to something different allows you to refresh your perspective, making you more effective later.’ You need to take breaks to work to your best ability and it’s that which will impress the boss. Besides, no one likes a martyr.

ALL FOR ONE and one for all? ook out everyone, make way for the spoilt brats! Are we living in a world where parents will stop at just one child? There are many reasons why this could be the case. It could make financial sense, or it’s the need to finally put the cliché ‘three’s a crowd’ to bed. Either way, are we swapping the more traditional 2.4 kids in favour of a me-me generation of over-indulged want-it-alls? Or, are we just being more responsible and only giving birth to what we can afford? It’s easy to see the appeal of only having one child – one load of washing, one school run, one dinner… and only one tantrum at a time!

L

Together with her husband, Nick, she runs a specialist rehabilitation company for adults and children recovering from brain injuries. The couple live with their seven-year-old daughter. ‘I had a really positive experience growing up,’ says Zoe, ‘and I certainly don’t feel that I missed out. When I had my daughter, I was determined not to conform to stereotypes. Nick and I are her main role models and we hope she’s a wellbalanced girl. And the feedback we get from her school is that she’s caring and mature. She’s the child who goes over and says, “Hi, can I play with you?” She’s confident, but in no danger of being spoilt. In fact, I’m so conscious of making sure she’s not, that I sometimes think she loses out.’ Of course, having just one child is not always down to choice – many women can’t have more than one child. For Jane Piper, 47, who lives with her husband, Darren, and their 11-year-old daughter, Charlotte, it was never the plan to stop at one. ‘After five years of trying for a second, several rounds of fertility treatment and two miscarriages, we decided to stop. We had our beautiful little girl and that was more than enough. But I do feel bad that I couldn’t give Charlotte a brother or sister,’ admits Jane, who runs her own online business. ‘The school holidays are the most difficult time for her. She’s stuck with me and Darren for entertainment.

‘Are we swapping 2.4 kids in favour of a me-me generation of over-indulged want-it-alls?’

Single-child benefits ‘The pros of being an only child are pretty clear from the outset,’ explains childcare expert Caroline Hartwell. ‘The one-on-one attention, never having to share if they don’t want to and having the undivided attention of parents who can meet their needs faster and with more gusto. ‘The single-child syndrome may exist,’ says Caroline. ‘They can be demanding, spoilt, self-centred and non-independent with diva-like tendencies. But more often than not it depends on the parents.’ As an only child herself, mother-of-one, Zoe, 42, always planned to stop at one.

REPORT

But we balance that by being able to send her to various camps and take her on great holidays. We’ve been to Disney World with her, which would be incredibly expensive if we were a larger family.’ Ruth Sparkes, 45, who lives with her husband, Simon, and their 15-year-old son, Matthew, agrees that having one child can make things easier financially. ‘We’re better off with one: we wouldn’t have been able to afford the holidays we have, the school we send him to, or the house we live in if we’d had another child. ‘Plus, Matthew’s extremely confident because nobody’s there to chaperone him or be his comfort blanket; he’s also far more comfortable speaking to adults than I was at his age.’

many people, having one child fulfils the need to carry on the bloodline, without making as much financial commitment. Mom-of-six Kim Brown, 43, admits that having a large family has meant having to tighten the purse strings: ‘Financially, it is a strain. We can’t go on expensive holidays, but we do the best we can. For me, one just wasn’t enough.’ Kim, who’s just published her first novel, lives with her husband, Richard, and their children: Perry, 21, Ben, 12, Milly, 10, Thomas, six, and twin girls, Maisy and Ella, four. ‘I always knew I wanted to be a mom, but I’d never planned on having quite so many,’ confesses Kim. ‘After having three kids, I thought I was done, until I unexpectedly suffered a miscarriage, and after that something clicked and I wanted more. The fourth was a real game-changer. Everything was much more difficult on a practical level and I had to give up work. Then a few years later, on Christmas Eve, we found out we were expecting twins! I was crying and my husband was as white as a sheet – but we coped.’ In fact, they’ve thrived: ‘I love being a mom, and I love that the kids have plenty of siblings. They’ve learnt to be tolerant of others and how to share, they’re good friends and are very protective of one another.’ But with the cost of bringing up a child (from birth to 18) in the average middle-income family now standing at an eye-watering R1 600 000, is having more than one becoming a luxury many of us can no longer afford? And by denying the ‘only but lonely’ a sibling relationship, are we in danger of producing a generation with serious adjustment issues? No, says Professor Furedi, ‘Research has shown that by and large, having no siblings makes no difference to a child’s outcome.’ It seems then that the secret of producing well-adjusted, capable children has less to do with the number of siblings and more to do with what kind of parent you are. So it really is all down to you…

However, Ruth does admit that having just one child on whom to shower attention can have its downside. ‘One of Matthew’s teachers did me a great kindness at parents’ evening by telling me she could see he was an only child. He wasn’t very good at organising or doing things for himself because I’d been doing it all for him – and l loved doing it. Since then I’ve made a conscious effort to allow him to become more independent.’ So, does this suggest parents are making their choice based purely on the financial advantages? There’s no doubt that families with just one child in tow can afford to do more, buy more and see more compared to those with a larger headcount to consider. And, according to Frank Furedi, a professor of sociology and author of Paranoid Parenting (R493, Bloomsbury), ultra-wealthy families are still having three or more children, but increasingly, middle-income families are choosing to have just one child. ver fantasised about killing your boyfriend in his sleep? I know I have… Don’t get me wrong, in daylight hours, I love him dearly, but sleep deprivation can do funny things to your brain, and if suffocating him with a pillow is all it would take to drown out that awful blocked drain noise emanating from the back of his throat, it’s very tempting. And I suspect I’m not alone.

E

The easy answer? A recent survey* found that 19% of respondents had thought about breaking up with their partners due to snoring, and research** also suggests that up to one in five couples choose to sleep in separate beds. Could it be the best way to save your relationship (and his life)? We look at the implications…

More sleep A whopping 89% of people whose partners snore lose an average of 1.5 hours of sleep per night* – so just think how much more rested you’d be if you decamped to separate rooms at lights out time. And snoring isn’t the only thing that could be keeping you awake. Whether

Fewer arguments Studies also suggest that 25% of couples argue in bed because they are kept awake by their partners*** – hardly a surprise when you consider most people’s response to an annoying bedmate is a dig in the ribs or a swift kick to the shin. Ask any relationship expert and they’ll tell you that going to sleep on an argument is the worst thing you can do – all that rage won’t just lead to a restless night, it also means you’ll wake up cranky and ready to attack. Deciding to go at it alone in separate rooms means your bed becomes the haven of peace it should be at night and in the morning, you’ll be pleased to see your partner’s face… rather than wanting to punch him in it! it’s their series addiction, late working hours, or his need to sprawl spreadeagled across the mattress, approximately 50% of sleep disturbance is caused by a person’s partner and one third of married

couples admit that they sleep better alone**.

Better sex Sleeping apart may not sound like the best thing for your sex life, but actually, it could

even improve things in that department. More than 1 in 10 couples stated that snoring has had a negative impact on their sex life, either because they’re too tired or they find their snoring partner a turn-off*. It follows that if you’re well rested and not angry with your partner, you’re more likely to want to have sex with them in the first place. And who says it has to happen in bed at night-time? Sleeping apart could actually spice things up by bringing back a little variety to your sex life. You may even find the mood takes you in the middle of the afternoon… or in the living room!

Not quite ready to go at it alone? Try stripping off instead. According to writer Chris Thomson, sleeping naked could improve your sleep and your relationship. Skin-to-skin contact can boost production of oxytocin, also known as the ‘love hormone’, which can combat stress and high blood pressure, as well as making you feel closer to your partner. With warmer nights on their way, now is certainly a good time to pack away your PJs, so it’s worth a try, right?

IT HAPPENED TO ME

here you go,’ said my make-up artist, as she carefully blended my concealer, ‘you can hardly see it’. Covering a painful black and purple bruise the morning of my wedding wasn’t something we’d practised in my make-up trials. It had happened on a normal Monday morning, my last one at work before I was off for three weeks to enjoy my wedding and honeymoon. I checked the time before grabbing my keys and heading out the door. It was 6:30am, and time for my usual morning run. My fiancé and I were new to the area – we’d only been living there five months, so I was still getting used to my new running route. I loved our street and felt safe among the rows of houses with well-kept front gardens, each one crammed with young families. Our home is a stone’s throw from the local park, and each day, I’d pass by to see parents playing with their kids, dog walkers who’d smile and say hello. That morning, however, there was heavy rain and as I stepped out, I noticed how dark the rain clouds made the sky. I was still fiddling with the zip on my jacket as I rounded the corner, heading towards the park – my usual running route – when I saw a man walking towards me. He was short and stocky, dressed in head-to-toe black and wearing a beanie. As he walked past, he was looking intently at me, but instead of feeling scared, I thought to myself, ‘You look dodgy, please don’t rob our house.’

‘T

Suddenly fearful I continued jogging, pausing to put my earphones in and I was several steps into the park before I realised there were no families or dog walkers using the park. In fact, there was no one in the park but me. My stomach turned to stone, my breathing quickened and an uneasy feeling came over me. I shouldn’t have gone running this morning. I felt an overwhelming need to be alert. As the rain pattered down on me, I took my earphones out and cast my eyes around. A shadow caught my attention, moving swiftly around the outside of the railings. I thought to myself, ‘that’s where I should be; outside the park.’ Moments later, I saw a figure appear

directly ahead of me. It took me a few seconds to realise it was him, the man dressed in black I’d seen earlier. The atmosphere was instantly tense. This wasn’t good. We were alone in the park and he knew that. He was just standing there, square and strong, watching me. I forced myself to put one foot in front of the other, him watching me, watching him. I had a million things speeding through my head, all boiling down to one question: What do I do? My heart was thumping so loudly I was sure he could hear it. There was a curve in the path ahead, which – if I followed – would put me on track for the furthest exit of the park with my back to him, not a very strong position for me and I knew it was right where he wanted me.

smug in the knowledge no one could hear me. At that moment, a man happened to be passing by and shouted, ‘Are you alright?’ through the railings. Surprised, my attacker ran off. He didn’t steal my phone, or grab my keys. That wasn’t his target. I was sobbing as the passer-by ran to help me. A family in a house nearby had heard my screams and called the police. Once the police arrived they fired questions at me, ‘How tall was he? Did he have gloves on? Did you see where he ran to?’ I sat numb, only nodding or shaking my head in reply. A young man noted my answers, then he told me they’d been after someone in connection with a number of assaults – all sexual – in the area. I’d had a lucky escape. I learned later, after he was arrested, that of all the assaults, I was the only one to see his face, as he normally attacked from behind. He was arrested the week after my attack. I was on honeymoon at the time, but when I got home, I had to go to an identity parade. I picked him out with no hesitation – the detective on the case smiled and called me ‘an angel’ for doing so. I still struggle to sleep at night and suffer panic attacks if anyone in dark clothes comes near. Yet if I hadn’t been attacked that day and made the choice to face him, I wouldn’t have been able to pick him out in a line-up and he’d still be attacking women. When you look at the big picture, covering a bruise on my wedding day was a small price to pay.

‘My stomach turned to stone, my breathing quickened and an uneasy feeling came over me’

No going back In that split second, I remembered reading somewhere that if you make eye contact with a potential attacker they may be less likely to attack you. I made my decision, and as I jogged towards him, I tilted my head up so my eyes met his, like a silent dare. I willed him to walk by. But he didn’t. He took two big strides towards me and punched me hard, knocking me to the floor. My keys and phone went flying, the pain exploding in the right side of my jaw. As I lay in a huge puddle struggling for breath, he stood over me – fists clenched, just staring. I pushed myself up on my elbows and screamed as loud as I could. Still he didn’t move. He seemed transfixed, sneering at me on the ground,

‘I’ve finally landed my dream job...’ TASTETESTING BAKED GOODS!’ YouTube sensation, comedian and presenter of The Great South African Bake Off, Anne Hirsch, 31, chats to us about comedy, her lack of exercising and her latest gig on BBC Lifestyle

H

Hi my name is Anne Hirsch and I love Boney M. I grew up in the beautiful city of Bloemfontein – well I’m sure it will be beautiful, once they’re finished building it. I studied Drama at Stellenbosch University – go Maties – and am now permanently based in Cape Town. Growing up I wanted to be part of the mafia. I used to watch a lot of gangster movies and thought it was a pretty easy way of making money. That was until I recognised it would be, you know, illegal. I then dabbled with the idea of becoming a lawyer. Television is to blame for that as well; Ally McBeal, naked dancing baby, enough said.

Stand-up comedy definitely wasn’t always on the cards for me. While I was studying, auditions for the legendary David Kau’s annual stand-up comedy competition, So You Think You’re Funny, were taking place, and a friend of mine thought it would be funny for me to give it a go. To everyone’s surprise, especially David Kau’s – who I’m pretty sure said no to me at my first audition, I won the competition! After eventually winning him over, David invited me to perform in his Blacks Only Comedy Show, as a white female, I’m sure you can see how that’s funny.

‘Growing up I wanted to be part of the mafia. I used to watch a lot of gangster movies and thought it was a pretty easy way of making money’

The Anne Hirsch Show on YouTube came about when I joined forces with a few friends from production company Zootee Studios. We started interviewing celebrities just for the fun of it, and it eventually turned into a real thing. Our focus is definitely on local celebrities – not that we couldn’t interview Hollywood celebrities – we just haven’t done that yet.

My next adventure, as I’m sure the world knows, is co-presenting The Great South African Bake Off. The producers contacted me a while back to find out if I’d be interested in taking part, and although it was completely out of my comfort zone, I decided to give it a go. And that’s the way to cookie crumbles! Be sure to tune into the show for more awesome food puns. Presenting The Great South African Bake Off is pretty much the best gig ever. People make desserts for you and it’s literally your job to taste them – errbody got time for that, right?! It’s wonderful working with such an amazing crew and also such a great co-presenter, Donovan Goliath. We’ve truly mastered the art of sampling baked goods – really, we’ve been practicing our whole lives for this moment. Thankfully I’ve never been one to watch what I eat, and exercise and I have never been the best of friends. I know this sentiment will eventually catch up with me though. One day someone’s going to find me dead in my apartment holding a packet of cheese curls.

We are so looking forward to seeing what’s next for this SA funny gal.

CELEBRITY LIFE

I like to take long walks on the beach, drink piña coladas and get caught in the rain. And plan end-of-year holidays with my family, it’s like our thing. The next few months are very much the corporate season for comedians, so there are a lot of gigs and a lot of travelling. Loads of big companies have their end-of-year functions around this time, so it’s fun to be involved in this as an entertainer. And it’s Movember, so I don’t have to shave my moustache as often. I’m looking forward to getting back on the YouTube train this year. I know people have missed the show, what with the lack of YouTube videos out there. I’m also hoping for a second season of The Great South African Bake Off. Hint hint. Exciting times ahead!

MY CELEBRITIES I love them BIG all. From Kim Kardashian to Kate ½ LOVES even the ones who aren’t at all. Don’t let less-thansmooth backs of arms stop you from wearing strappy dresses. Known as keratosis pilaris, these bumps are a build-up of keratin in the hair follicles, which leads to a ‘chicken skin’ type texture. HOW TO MINIMISE THEM… ‘Look for lotions that have AHAs and salicylic acid,’ says Paula Begoun, founder of skincare company Paula’s Choice.

‘They’ll help dissolve the blockage and leave skin soft and smooth.’ TRY The Body Shop Fuji Green Tea Exfoliating Soap, R80, and TLC 3-in-1 Exfoliating Oil Free Wipes, R32,99.

POLISH pale legs

Rid legs of dry skin by using a coarse exfoliator, like Charlotte Rhys Salt Scrub, R96, before jumping in the shower. Use a gradual tanning product to build up a golden glow, then keep reapplying every few days. We love Skinny Tan Gradual Tanner, R320. Need an extra hit of bronze? YOU SHOULD DRINK AT LEAST EIGHT GLASSES OF WATER A DAY While it’s obviously important not to become parched, there’s no real evidence to support this. It depends on your size, how active you are, and how hot or humid it is. So unless you’re doing an Ironman in the Sahara, don’t get hung up on it. THE VERDICT False. TIP Although you get a lot of the fluid you need from fruit, vegetables and cups of tea, water is always better than Coke Light!

THE RULE

YOU SHOULD EAT FIVE PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEG EVERY DAY This one’s been drummed into us so much, we’re just about managing it, blending veggies into the kids’ pasta sauces and diligently swapping our vodka and Coke for vodka and orange. But don’t pat yourself on the back just yet – it turns out we should be aiming for twice as much! World Health Organisation boffins discovered the lowest levels of heart disease were linked to those eating 10 portions of fruit and veg. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY! THE VERDICT Up the ante. TIP Frozen fruit and veg is just as good for you as the fresh stuff, so stock up the freezer.

THE RULE YOU SHOULD EXERCISE FOR 30 MINUTES, FIVE TIMES A WEEK …so say international guidelines. Shortly after I was diagnosed with coeliac disease, I used the same fork to stir the kids’ pasta and my own gluten-free version. Thirty minutes later, I was doubled up in pain. It scared me that such a silly mistake could cause hours of agony. I’d always been healthy growing up. I did have bloating and stomach cramps when I ate certain things, but didn’t think anything of it. It wasn’t until I was a married mom-of-two that things got worse. I remember one miserable Halloween, I was so unwell that my husband had to take Alfie and Millie out trick-or-treating on our street, while I stayed at home unable to answer the door to the neighbour’s kids. Over the next two years, I’d constantly be at the doctor’s rooms for one thing or another – stomach cramps, throat infections, diarrhoea – but my symptoms were put down to stress, or I’d be given another round of antibiotics. I kept thinking, ‘Why am I getting all of this? What’s wrong with me?’ Next, I developed restless leg syndrome. For months, I spent every night unable to sleep because my legs would be kicking out constantly.

K

My doctor referred me for blood tests, but as we were due to go on a big overseas holiday, I had to wait for the results. Instead of enjoying myself on the beach, I spent the whole time thinking, ‘I can’t go on like this’. When I returned home, the test results showed I had a serious deficiency of vitamin B12. I was given a course of injections, and even after the first one, my legs stopped kicking out. However, the doctor explained that the deficiency could mean there was a problem with my gut and referred me for more tests. That’s when my doctors discovered I had coeliac disease. It meant my body wasn’t absorbing vitamins properly and my immune system had been damaged. Finally, I had an explanation for why I was always so ill! I was relieved it was nothing terminal, but the doctor stressed that it was an incurable condition and I’d have to follow a strict gluten-free diet, avoiding all flour-based foods. We had to buy new wooden spoons, new chopping boards, even a separate toaster for me. When I was first diagnosed, I worried we’d never be able to lead a normal life, but an online gluten-free guide was a real life-saver in the early days. It’s easier to eat out than I’d feared, and most people understand it’s not just a fad diet. I hadn’t realised coeliac disease was a genetic condition, but my mom was recently diagnosed, too, so I do worry about the kids. At the moment they’ll happily tuck into pizza, cakes and bread. I just look at them thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, what I’d do to eat that!’

‘It scared me that a silly mistake could bring on hours of agony’

WHAT IS COELIAC DISEASE? Coeliac disease is a serious illness where the body’s immune system attacks itself when gluten is eaten, causing damage to the lining of the gut. It is not a food allergy. Gluten is mainly found in wheat, rye and barley. Coeliac prevalence varies by region, and it’s estimated that it affects around 1 in 300 people in Africa. Even though it’s relatively common, only about 24% of sufferers are clinically diagnosed. The average time it takes for a person to be diagnosed with coeliac disease is 13 years. There is no cure – the only treatment is a lifelong gluten-free diet. Avoiding gluten can be tough, but it’s made much easier by all the gluten-free products available at stores like Dis-Chem. It tends to affect twice as many women as men and is usually diagnosed with blood tests, followed by a biopsy.

SYMPTOMS TO WATCH OUT FOR Inexplicable, constant fatigue Bloating or diarrhoea Joint or bone pain Sudden or unexplained weight loss Abdominal pain or discomfort, particularly after eating or anaemia Tingling in the hands and feet

K L A W THIS WAY!

It’s easy, it costs nothing and it could be even better for you than running – walking is where it’s at ere’s something to put a spring in your step! It’s time to dig out those takkies from under the bed and put your best foot forward. If everyone walked for just 20–30 minutes a day, up to 37 000 lives could be saved every year. And that’s just one of many convincing reasons why walking wins the great pace debate…

TAKE IT IN YOUR STRIDE ½ – every one of us can put one foot in front of the other. And it’s completely free! Go it alone and you’ll be amazed how a brisk walk focuses the mind and helps solve problems. Or, arrange to meet up with friends – it’s much harder to talk yourself out of going if you’ve agreed to meet other people. Leave the car at home and walk to the shops. If you can, go for a stroll during your lunch break, or enlist a four-legged friend – there’s nothing like a dog’s enthusiasm to motivate you.

FACE THE CONSEQUENCES Ever heard the expression ‘runner’s face’? Plastic surgeons apparently coined the phrase after they saw an increasing number of patients asking for procedures to combat the physical side effects of running, like wrinkles and gaunt faces. ‘Dedicated runners of normal weight in their mid-forties tend to have more haggard, sunken faces,’ says surgeon, Dr Gerald Imber, which could be why celeb runners like Madonna and Renée Zellweger are thought to have undergone facial procedures. Good for your heart We’re always being told cardiovascular exercise benefits our hearts, but a recent study showed that walking could be almost twice as effective as running in reducing the risk of heart disease. Participants were monitored over a six-year period, and while the runners reduced their chances of developing heart disease by 4.5%, the walkers reduced theirs by 9.3%.

through, then transfer to a warm plate. Fry the onion and chilli in the same pan for 2–3 min until softened. Add the paprika, saffron, garlic, stock, tomatoes and beans, then return the pork to the pan and stir well. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, cover with a lid and cook for 45 min or until the sauce has thickened. Add a few tablespoons of water now and again if the sauce is looking dry. Ladle into warmed shallow bowls, sprinkle over the parsley and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve with rice and salad.

1

Put the ribs in a roomy roasting tin with the paprika, Jack Daniel’s, maple syrup and stock cube, and season. Rub the ingredients into the beef ribs, then add 300ml kettle hot water and cover the tin with foil. If you like, you could marinate the ribs overnight in a sealed plastic food bag. Heat the oven to 180°C. Cook the ribs for 2–3 hr. Once cooked, remove the ribs to a board and slice between the bones to make individual portions. Set aside to cool if not eating now, or keep warm. Pour the juices into a jug and skim off the fat. Pour the remaining liquid into a pan and bring to the boil. Bubble for around 5 min, or until reduced and syrupy. Put the onions into a bowl with a generous sprinkling of salt and the lemon juice, and set aside. Baste the ribs with the sauce, then transfer to a hot braai and cook, turning until glazed and browned. Baste again with any remaining sauce and cook until piping hot. Avoid traces of egg yolk in the whites or you’ll never get the mixture to go thick and glossy, as needed. Room temperature eggs are best for this – you’ll get less volume if you use eggs from the fridge. Add the sugar slowly, 1 tbsp at a time, and whisk really well between each addition to get the best thick, glossy and stiff mixture. Love a meringue that’s soft in the middle? Simply remove from the oven after the cooking time. Prefer a crisper texture? Let it cool and dry out in the turned-off oven. Want it chewy instead? LIVING ROOM Pretty in print Never let it be said that curtains can’t make a room! This statement set ties everything together, from the cushions to the knitted pouffe. Keep an eye out for short offcuts of fabric – you can then sew them yourself to save cash if the pattern you have in mind is a bit pricey. Mixing prints? Stick to one or two main colours and a neutral white or grey to make it work. Furniture inspired by the 1960s is coming back into fashion, and lucky Harriet managed to nab some of hers for next to nothing. There are lots of buys to be had on online sites like Bid or Buy, but because of its rising popularity, you’ll need to beat everyone else to the front of the bidding line to bag a bargain!

WHO LIVES HERE? Harriet Hurdley thought her home was far too modern and uninspiring for her and her partner Mark’s tastes. But now that they’ve given it a makeover, using retro furniture, quirky prints and complementary colours, it has loads more life and character.

‘Most items of furniture in our home are bought second hand – and we’ve rarely paid very much at all for things’

KITCHEN Square meal No need to paint your table and chairs all one colour – here, pastel blue, crimson and bare wood match the kitchen’s fun feel, with an unapologetic chunky wall clock to complete the look. Don’t want to fork out for expensive wall prints? Neither did Harriet, so she cleverly framed wrapping paper instead.

Guest bedrooms are usually a tad on the smaller side, so make the most of what you have with eye-catching designs instead. You don’t have to go for a full mural – a display wall of vintage pictures can be just as strong. Pile pillows in a range of shapes and sizes for a luxury feel, and don’t forget to leave a few personal touches – equipping bedside tables with some well-loved books for a homely touch.

Weird crushes

HOT RIGHT NOW

They may not be your average hunks, but there’s something sexy about these unlikely pin-ups

British charm

BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH We can’t resist Benny when he’s in character on our TVs as the mysterious Sherlock Holmes in Sherlock. Not a hunk in the traditional sense, there’s definitely something about this British actor that we can’t resist. This month, he takes the lead role in Shakespeare’s tragedy, Hamlet, in cinemas from 7 November.

Guy next door

BEN STILLER We all know the way to a woman’s heart is the ability to make her laugh, and Ben Stiller has had us in stitches more than once. He may not be 'really, really ridiculously good looking', but he sure can make us smile. He’ll be back on the big screen in the much anticipated Zoolander 2 in February 2016.

JASON LEE Who didn’t fall in love with Jason Lee in the 2001 romance, Heartbreakers? He won the heart of Jennifer Love Hewitt, and snatched a piece of ours at the same time. And even though we don’t like to admit it, we quite fancied his down-on-his-luck character in My Name is Earl, too. And let’s not forget that he adopted three adorable chipmunks... Who could ask for more? Catch him in the fourth Alvin and the Chipmunks on screens next month.

Still got it!

Ewan could be playing Renton again in Trainspotting 2. Hopefully he’ll pick a cleaner toilet this time.

o¾a¾happy¾ ¾‘The¾secret¾t h¾ ¾be¾in¾love¾wit ¾marriage¾is¾to o’¾ u’re¾married¾t ¾the¾person¾yo it’s lovely to be able to share the experiences you’ve had with them. On his love of motorbikes… I get taken up with something, a new thing, and I run with it for a while and then it disappears. First it was paragliding, then it was flying, then it was something else. Underneath all of it, always, are motorbikes. That’s never gone away. On Trainspotting 2… It looks like it might happen. The idea is that we shoot it in 2016 – 20 years after the original came out. And I’d be up for it. I wouldn’t have been 10 years ago, but I am now.

INSIDE THE MIND OF...

Ewan McGregor

The Scottish actor on his rock solid marriage, skinny jeans and getting his kit off! On his wife, Eve… I get asked ‘what’s the secret to a happy marriage?’ a lot, and there’s no answer to it without trivialising it. You can’t just say ‘if you do this or do that, you’ll have a great marriage’, because it doesn’t work like that. There’s no secret other than to be in love with the woman you’re sharing your life with.

On travelling the world… We’re a really active family so, at the end of each of my trips, we try and meet up – it could be South Africa, Japan, Australia or wherever. And our holiday will be to go back along the route I have taken, so the kids can experience what I’ve been through. When you haven’t seen your family for such a long time,

On never wanting to grow up… I still want to kick around on BMX bikes! I have to ask my wife: ‘Do I look like an idiot, or is this all right, the way I’m dressed?’ Because you don’t want to be ‘that guy’, but you also don’t want to listen to that voice either. I want to wear skinny jeans when I’m in my seventies. Why not? Who cares? On nude scenes… I don’t mind doing nudity if it’s called for. I love romantic films, and part of that in our modern world is sex. I don’t want to be the guy getting out of bed clutching a pillow to his d**k, because people don’t do that in real life. If you’ve just spent three hours making love to a woman, you're not going to be worried about her seeing you when you get up to go to the toilet. Ewan stars in Jane Got a Gun with Natalie Portman, out 6 November.
