Around here, BOIers have a sixth sense when they’re within a few feet of each other, which is a distinguishing characteristic of those folks who have lived through all the beautiful, sunny, salt-tinged days and weathered every storm Mother Nature ever dished out. But BOIers are also well known for being among the most welcoming Texans in the entire state: They are famous for taking former tourists

Creative Corners Come for the architecture, stay for the arts. ,
, a stroll through downtown Galveston quickly presents itself as your happy place. The visual and performing arts shine year-round downtown, which is home to more than 20 art galleries, an opera house, a symphony orchestra and a performance theater. One of the reasons the Island is so artsy is that artists have been drawn by the many nonprofit art spaces that populate Galveston. The town’s eclectic and constant commitment to the arts resonate from the Galveston Arts Center, where renowned local, regional, national and international artists are featured in exhibitions housed in the center’s multiple galleries.

From the HeART Gallery is a local favorite and the Island’s largest, representing more than 100 artists, whose work spans nearly 30 mediums. Canvases and textiles that are for sale at the gallery include sculpture, wood carving, painting, photography, pottery, jewelry, furniture and mixed media. Art lovers and art makers thrive inside the gallery’s 3,000-squarefeet, which also features a classroom and space for parties and special events. Gallery owner Scott Edwards, who also purchased neighboring fine art gallery Affaire d’Art with his late wife, Samitha, says there’s so much flavor and depth to discover in downtown’s bustling art scene. “There are artists everywhere here, in all walks of life. It’s so diverse, and the art community is so supportive of one another,” Edwards says. “We cross-promote, we share, we learn, we grow.” One of the reasons art flourishes in Galveston is the Island’s diverse landscape of beaches, historic homes, migrating birds, marshlands and industrial areas, says Brenda Lee, owner of G. Galveston Historical Foundation raised $3 million for a hull replacement and other maintenance projects, including the replacement of 22,000 board feet of Douglas fir decking and new furniture crafted from teak. Three years later, the Elissa was seaworthy again. The idea for “Ship to Shore” came from some work the foundation was doing on another site, which led to an agreement that the Seaport should be redeveloped, Wright says.

Passengers must fill out immigration forms as they arrive on the Elissa, with questions designed to ferret out their real identities and reasons for wanting to come to America. Among those questions: “Are you an anarchist?” If a woman describes herself as single, more probing questions follow to determine whether she might intend to work as a prostitute, which would bar entry. “We try to convey this historical information in a playful way,” Smith says. “We haven’t done anything like this before; it’s fun for me, too.” Winston Ross is an award-winning journalist whose work spans two decades. Galveston led to an area renaissance that continues to shine almost four decades later. All over town, Islanders can’t wait for Mardi Gras Galveston 2022, an unprecedented event in Galveston’s illustrious cultural calendar. Since 1985, Galveston Mardi Gras has grown steadily in participants and fanfare to become a sparkling purple, green and gold highlight of the cultural year. As it was in 1871, the krewes, social clubs comprised of local community members, remain the bedrock of today's Mardi Gras. Eight krewes will coordinate events in 2022, each unique in membership and presentation. The Mystic Krewe of Aquarius sponsors the Kick-Off Parade and the Fat Tuesday Parade, the highly anticipated bookends of the Mardi Gras season. They also host the Ball and Barn Bash, the “biggest public party in all of Mardi Gras,” a fabulous launch of festivities the Friday night before the Kick-Off Parade. The closing Fat Tuesday parade features more than just the Mystic Krewe of Aquarius as other krewes marching bands, costumed dancers and other celebrants of the finale.

Many historical festivals also look to a pagan origin, when whoever found the hidden treasure was designated "King for a Day" during the Saturnalia, the Roman winter solstice feast. Historians have also unearthed a more pragmatic explanation: A New Orleans baker discovered an abundant supply of tiny porcelain dolls imported from France in the 1940s and began inserting them into his King Cakes. Danny Weber was a beloved member of the Galveston Fire Department for three decades, a prime example of how Mardi Gras Galveston is about much more than purple, green and gold beads. “The Knights of Momus select a King who visits the Texas Children’s Hospital and the Burn Center to deliver beads to the kids,” Ware says. “All of the krewes hold events that benefit the local community, raising funds for schools and other nonprofit organizations.” Several of the parades are also planned with children in mind, beginning with the Shriners Hospitals for Children & Sunshine Kids Parade, a wonderful fundraiser that features floats, those famous Shriner clowns in their minicars, and more. The Krewe of Barkus & Meoux Parade brings the animal spirit out in everybody, especially the furry, four-legged participants and their young trainers. Finally, the Mardi Gras Children’s Parade is hosted by local firefighters and first responders who encourage kids to dress up in their best costumes and participate in float decorations. Ware says this generosity of spirit remains an integral part of Mardi Gras. “For years small black churches in the area celebrated the period leading up to Ash Wednesday and Lent with Mardi Gras-style fanfare and charitable projects before the return of the large, citywide festival we know today.
