NEVER-ENDING EVOLUTION

Dubai is much more than a city, it’s a dynamic, ever-evolving hub that has been redefining itself for decades, always with a vision firmly focused on the future. In the latest issue of Dubai Italian Experiences, we delve into the story of the city’s extraordinary evolution, focusing on the past thirty years. During this time, Dubai has transformed from a desert settlement into one of the most modern and forwardthinking cities on the planet. Historical images chronicle this impressive building process, where skyscrapers and futuristic infrastructures have emerged from the sands, like a mirage turned into a stunning reality.

Today, Dubai pulses with a vibrant calendar of events, seasons, and international gatherings. Among them, Dubai Design Week stands out as a must-attend for Italian brands, offering a global stage where tradition meets cutting-edge innovation. But the city’s strong connection with design extends throughout the year in one of its most stylish destinations: the Design District (d3). This hotspot is a true haven of style and luxury, where architecture, art, and technology seamlessly come together. Yet, Dubai is not just about innovation and design. It’s a place where luxury and elegance shape everyday life. This is perfectly exemplified by prominent figures like Stefano Ricci, a Florentine designer deeply connected to the city, and Paolo Petrocelli, a young cultural manager reshaping Dubai’s theatre and music scene. For those in search of even more exclusive experiences, Dubai offers the thrill of exploring its streets at the wheel of the new Ferrari 12-Cylinder – a bold statement of power, freedom, and speed. Every inch of this city breathes transformation, innovation, and the spirit of limitless ambition. Dubai is constantly evolving, and at Dubai Italian Experiences, we’re ready to unveil all its hidden facets.

THANKS TO MY SPONTANEITY, I MANAGED TO BUILD A LOT OF CREDIBILITY AND SET UP MY CONTENT CREATORS’ ACADEMY

A MARCHE WOMAN IN DUBAI

You’re a content creator, but also a social media manager and trainer. How did you achieve these goals?

After completing two degrees in Marketing I embarked on my career as a Social Media Manager, handling various corporate accounts, but I always felt I could do more. So I decided to create content about my region, Le Marche. And I carried on with this double life, as a travel blogger and a SMM. The turning point came when I decided to combine the two parts. Thanks to my spontaneity and transparency, I managed to build a lot of credibility and set up my Content Creators’ Academy, a live support platform for professionals and business people, but also for anyone who wants to turn a passion into a job, as I’ve done.

You’re from the Marche but you’re living in Dubai. Why did you choose the Emirates city?

At frst I was very sceptical, but then I realised it was the right place to start my new chapter. The climate and the quality of life were crucial elements in my decision. I miss the Marche, but thanks to my work I travel a lot, so I can visit often, even for just a few days.

3 recommendations for a frst-time visitor to Dubai?

A night in the desert; a trip to Bur Dubai with a visit to the Al Shindagha museum, and a tour of Al Seef with dinner at Al Khayma Heritage Restaurant. What are the biggest differences you’ve found between Italy and the United Arab Emirates?

They’re two very different countries, but I feel at ease in both. Here in Dubai I’ve found my place as an entrepreneur, because although competition is ferce, that means you’re always giving your best. In Italy there’s more of a tendency to settle for less, although it’s still the most wonderful country in the world.

A restaurant for a working lunch, and another for a romantic dinner.

For a business lunch I’d recommend Sushisamba, on the 5 st foor of The St. Regis Dubai, The Palm, with incredible views over the whole city. And for a romantic dinner for two, Pierchic, the only restaurant set right over the sea with views of Burj Al Arab and food from the Marche, because the chef, Beatrice Segoni, is from the same region.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS BRINGING JOY TO OUR GUESTS AND THE MOST REWARDING ASPECT IS SEEING THEM COMING BACK AGAIN AND AGAIN

THE KING MIDAS OF HOSPITALITY

ALBERTO MICHIELI, GENERAL MANAGER AT ALAYA, THE GO-TO RESTAURANT IN THE HEART OF THE DIFC

What inspired you to pursue a career in the hospitality industry and for how long have you been in Dubai?

I am originally from Italy, born and raised in Venice. My father used to take me to fne dining restaurants, and I have been in love with hospitality since then. So at the age of 7, I started working in this industry. In 7 I moved for the frst time to Dubai, where I worked as restaurant manager, winning the award for the Best Lebanese Restaurant in the city. After successful experiences in China and at the Caribbean in Aruba, in 6, I moved back to Dubai and the three restaurants I managed won the Best Italian Restaurant award. Since , I have been proud to be Alaya’s General Manager, my second role with Fundamental Hospitality.

What is the key to excellence in hospitality?

The harmony between departments. From the kitchen’s operations and its collaboration with Marketing to the welcoming gestures of the front desk, every element must work in unison to ensure a fawless guest experience. How does your approach change based on the city where you are working?

Understanding the local market is our guiding compass. Each city, whether it’s the romantic canals of Venice or the dazzling lights of Dubai, has its unique character. I’ve learned that not every concept translates across different markets. By grasping the culture, preferences, and trends of each location, we can craft experiences that resonate with our guests and ensure the brand’s success.

What is your guiding principle?

Leading by example. I strive to do what I say I will do. In this industry, actions speak louder than words. Enhancing the guest experience has been the mission shaping my strategies and decisions throughout my career.

How do you motivate your team?

Energy is contagious. As a leader, it’s crucial to bring positivity and enthusiasm from the moment you arrive, as it sets the tone for the team. Motivating them through goalsetting, celebrating successes, and recognizing hard work is the reason for achieving outstanding results.

What is the most rewarding aspect of being Alaya’s General Manager?

Seeing the guests always coming back because of the hospitality and the experience we provide at Alaya.

I ALWAYS APPROACH RUNWAY SHOWS WITH GREAT ENTHUSIASM, BUT I HAVE A SPECIAL WEAKNESS FOR DOLCE&GABBANA

SHINE LIKE A STAR

LUIGI RIZZELLO, LOOKMAKER TO THE STARS text Martina Olivieri

When did you realise you wanted to be a hair stylist and make-up artist?

It was all thanks to my mum, who taught me that loving yourself also means taking care of yourself. My mother gave me this extraordinary feeling for beauty and the intuition to create the perfect look for every woman by understanding which shades, haircut or style would make them happy when they look in the mirror.

In terms of fashion shows, what’s been your favourite experience?

I always approach runway shows with great excitement and enthusiasm, but I have a special weakness for Dolce&Gabbana; I love the way they manage to bring out the femininity of every woman. Choosing the perfect make-up for the outfts makes me give my best. Which celebrities have you most enjoyed working with? And which would you like to make up?

My favourites include Carla Bruni and Gisele Bündchen. And the star I’d most like to work with is Charlize Theron, an icon of perfection.

What’s your connection with Dubai?

My love for Dubai began when I created the look for a show by Rami Kadi, the Lebanese designer who’s well known in the United Arab Emirates and for Dubai Opera. Living in this city gives me an incredible buzz; it stimulates my imagination and allows me to unleash all my creative talent.

Dubai in 3 stylish places.

The Theatre of Digital Art at Souk Madinat Jumeirah, where classical art is turned into digital shows with musical accompaniment; Be Beach at Dubai Harbour, to relax by the pool while enjoying gourmet food and listening to top DJs; and Ibn Battuta Mall, for shopping.

You’ve also been Creative Director of the Italian brand Infnity Cosmetics; what does that mean to you?

I really like the brand, because it has everything cosmetics should offer a woman: versatility, durability and the desired effect. I share the philosophy that beauty should be within reach of everyone, and we’re exploring products that guarantee professional results, so that every woman can create her own individual version of beauty.

I HAD A DREAM: TO CREATE A GLOBAL COMMUNITY THAT BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER REGARDLESS OF DISTANCE AND LANGUAGE DIFFERENCES

GLOBAL CONNECTIONS

FRANCESCO MERIGHI, THE PIONEERING

Where did your passion for all things digital come from?

I had a dream: to create a global community that could overcome social barriers and bring people together regardless of distance and language differences. We thought sport might be the shared passion that could make the dream come true. I returned to Italy and together we began building the frst multilingual publishing platform. And that was the start of Goal.com, which has become the world’s largest football website, translated into 5 languages.

The standout project you’re working on at the moment?

It’s called the Capello Index and it brings artifcial intelligence into the world of sport to create a system that can assess the performance of players on the basis of a proprietary algorithm that combines statistics (developed in three years of research) with the professional experience of the great expert Fabio Capello. The system can provide an accurate vision of what’s happening on the feld, but at the moment it’s not accessible by the public.

What do you like most about Dubai?

Having visited the city a number of times, during Covid I spent an extended period here, and that’s when I started falling in love with the place. I’ve found a country that stands out for its effciency, vision, openness to the world, serenity, safety and hospitality. Not to mention the sunshine, which I consider to be a source of great energy and happiness for human beings.

Your favourite hotel in the city?

For me, Jumeirah Al Qasr is still the perfect resort, with the optimum combination of refned, elegant taste and excellent facilities.

The perfect place for an after-dinner drink? Socialista, the Cipriani cub, and Zuma.

What’s your advice for someone visiting the city for the frst time?

Don’t limit yourself to the classic sites, but go and watch the sunset at Jumeirah, take a bike ride to Kite Beach or spend a night camping in the desert.

All these will allow you to discover a more genuine side to the city.

His passion for travelling has deeply infuenced his style, by being a source of inspiration for his clothing’s sophisticated details, but also for all his other creations. Stefano Ricci is the symbol of % high Made-in-Italy craftsmanship across the world.

There is no head of state, prince, top manager or great sportsman who doesn’t own a collection of his handmade and hand-sewn suits or of his fne silk ties from which it all began. A pioneer of beauty, Stefano Ricci has always defed the rules of fashion, both the too ordinary or the too sensational ones. A Florentine by heart like few others… and yet ‘a man of the world always in the world’ who transformed his passion for the earth’s remotest corners into the Explorer project, which brought him and his collections from Iceland to the Galapagos Islands, from Mongolia to Cambodia and as far as the Land of the Incas, always accompanied by some of the world’s most famous photographers. We are talking about the great traveler Stefano Ricci who, in , celebrated 5 years of business in Luxor and has always been transforming his travelling experiences across the world into pieces evoking luxury, elegance and timeless taste, thus, testifying to an art that celebrates Italian beauty and craftsmanship in its every form.

When did you visit Dubai for the frst time?

Thirty years ago. Dubai in those days was a beautiful picture that is still stamped in my memory. It was a calm, peaceful, pleasant and, even back then, very elegant city. I remember that my wife Claudia and I, after having spent twenty days in a tent in Tanzania, as much as it was beautiful and comfortable, were happily surprised the moment we stepped into the 5 -square-meter apartment at Dubai’s Burji Al Arab! Dubai has always been ten years ahead of the rest of the world.

RICCI ESTABLISHED HIS LUXURY LIFESTYLE BRAND MORE THAN 50 YEARS AGO, HE CHOSE TO EMPLOY LOCAL ARTISANS AND CELEBRATE HIS BELOVED FLORENCE’S HERITAGE

How is your Dubai today?

We have two lovely shops in Dubai, one at The Mall of the Emirates and one at the Atlantis at The Palm. In Abu Dhabi, we have a shop at the Avenue in the Etihad Tower. Every Stefano Ricci boutique is an aesthetic experience… I have always personally designed my shops and supervised the selection of materials and production of furniture and furnishing objects. For the interiors, I use only two materials, in addition to crystal glass: grey sandstone and briar-root wood. The grey sandstone is quarried in the Mugello area: a plateau to the north of Florence and the homeland of the Lords of Florence, the Medici family, who ennobled the use of this stone. The stone is quarried

and still processed by hand by local skilled artisans, the stonecutters. An age-old craft which, unfortunately, is disappearing: through the Stefano Ricci Foundation, I have fnanced a stonecutters’ school because, otherwise, this craft will be lost forever. Even the dark brown briar-root wood furniture and coffered ceiling evoke the Florentine Renaissance. Details change, but the materials are always the same.

How did the Stefano Ricci Interior collection start?

More and more customers asked me to create for them the same objects and furniture they saw at my shops. It was only natural to extend our vision to a luxury lifestyle which includes living spaces, business, passions and leisure time.

Style and manic attention to details and materials, so typical of the Stefano Ricci style, are in demand even in the luxury residential market. What are your most interesting projects in this feld?

In Italy, in my Tuscany, we designed the Presidential Suite of the Grand Hotel Principe di Piemonte on the exclusive Versilian Coast. Located on the hotel’s second foor, the suite room features materials recalling our brand’s identity: Californian briar-root wood surfaces and contrasting precious marbles. It is an elegant balance that refects the image of our boutiques. We have also recently inaugurated the largest suite room ever built in Central Italy: it is in the tower of the medieval Castle dominating Castelfalf, an age-old village converted into a luxury resort surrounded by one thousand hectares of woods and hills. This place is an increasingly exclusive international destination for those longing to seek refuge in nature and history. And, last but not least, another project of this kind is the Yacht

Club on the island of Sindalah, in Saudi Arabia. It was a Florentine architect whom I think highly of, Luca Dini, who designed the whole island and told me about this project for the frst time. We were invited to take part in an international competition and I’m proud to say that my two sons Niccolò and Filippo submitted the design which was chosen by His Royal Highness in person.

Why did you decide to take part in the Sindalah Yacht Club project?

Because I see this project as a jump forward thirty years into the future. The island’s marina offers 86 boat docks and 75 mooring buoys offshore, but this is not my job. For the Yacht Club’s interiors, I designed elegant Italian-style rooms by using fne materials like white Carrara marble, briar-root wood surfaces and handmade fabrics provided by Antico Setifcio Fiorentino (the age-old Florentine silk factory dating back to 786 that Stefano Ricci purchased in , editor’s note). We created a new color for this project, Blue Sindalah, used on the precious crocodile skin which the sofas are covered with.

You own a leading crocodile skin workshop, a symbol of excellence across the world. How does this know-how translate to the production chain?

In terms of choice, selection, treatment and processing. Being able to assess the value of the skins to be used, as well as the quality of our artisans, led us to the top of this market niche across the world.

Excellence has deep roots…

Our company’s greatest heritage are the artisan workers. Some of them have been with us for 4 years! I am increasingly committed to handing down their know-how to the newest generations.

DISCOVERNIG ‘D3’

OR ONE OF DUBAI’S COOLEST NEW NEIGHBOURHOODS THAT FEATURES AVANT-GARDE DESIGN, TRENDY SHOPPING AND ART CONCEPTS IN A STYLISH ATMOSPHERE text Cecilia Berardi photo Marco Morelli

Unfolding along the waterfront, d3’s character is a blend of chic, eclectic, and avant-garde elements. It is exactly this unique mix that draws visitors from all walks of life

You are planning your trip to Dubai, and your research on the Emirate’s most iconic and unmissable places has just begun. Well, it won’t take long before you come across Design District as one of the city’s emblematic symbols!

Situated beside Dubai Creek, behind the Burj Khalifa, and close to Mohammed bin Rashid City, d3 is truly a must-see destination. Conceived to solidify Dubai’s status as a UNESCO Creative City of Design, the district provides a platform for the emirate’s creative professionals, designers, and artists to come together and inspire.

Its name refects not only its focus on design but also the three phases in which it has been projected and realised.

But what makes d3 so attractive?

artistic scene. Showrooms and galleries intersperse its streets, framing every corner with elegance and fair. Buildings 7 and 8, considered the district’s heart, perfectly refect the area’s artistic and innovative spirit. These two buildings host some of the most renowned design brands and art boutiques.

While leisurely strolling through the vibrant district, you will encounter an eclectic mix of art installations and eateries, each refecting the rich tapestry of the community. You might also unexpectedly run into a few sheep!

BETTER KNOWN AS D3, THIS IS THE CREATIVE HEART AND SOUL OF THE CITY. THIS PURPOSEBUILT COMMUNITY IS WHERE INDUSTRY HEAVYWEIGHTS,

STARTUPS AND ENTREPRENEURS CONNECT AND CELEBRATE ALL THINGS CREATIVE

It might surprise you that the answer does not lie in its sleek, contemporary buildings or the luxurious design boutiques that line its streets. What is truly captivating is its essence. Unfolding along the waterfront, d3’s character is a blend of chic, eclectic, and avant-garde elements.

It is exactly this unique mix that draws visitors from all walks of life.

By being a melting pot for design, art, and fashion from all over the world, d3 represents Dubai’s vibrant

One of d3’s most striking art installations, Chic Sheep, is part of the Design for Good project, which connects the design community through creative collaborations that support and promote social change within the United Arab Emirates.

This artistic initiative scattered one hundred sheep sculptures around the district as a symbol of new beginnings and a bright future.

After exploring the area, you might wish to relax in a setting beyond the concrete jungle. That’s why The Block, the country’s frst urban beach park, was conceived in d3.

its skyline, or staying active with its skate park, basketball courts, and cycling areas.

But the true spirit of d3 shines during a specifc time of the year: Design Week. This event is not just a rendezvous for industry insiders but an inclusive experience that celebrates design in all its forms - architecture, fashion, technology, and art- transforming d3 into a bustling hub of inspiration. During this week, the energy in the district attracts both locals and tourists eager to experience the latest in design.

Yet, it is not all about art and design here.

The culinary scene in Design District is certainly worth exploring! Concept stores offering various coffee roasts and Arab sweets, accompanied by a variety of teas, fusion cuisine, and Italian dishes, fll the area with their enticing designs and captivating aromas.

In d3, where ‘the obvious’ has no place, the famous restaurant Akiba Dori embodies originality and creativity, perfectly aligning with the district’s ethos. This emphasis on uniqueness enhances the overall dining experience. Indulge in its exquisite Japanese cuisine and Tokyo-style Neapolitan pizza - you won’t regret it. Italian cuisine is also a highlight in d3, adding a touch of authentic favor. Vicolo, serving a taste of Italian street food in the UAE, is an ode to secret,

ancient street recipes and is defnitely a must-try.

For a café that combines a relaxed atmosphere with hearty food and irresistible desserts, One Life Kitchen and Café is the place to visit. No matter what you choose from its menu full of options, dessert here is non-negotiable.

To fully immerse yourself in d3 on a typical day, Joe & The Juice is the go-to spot. As expected, you can fnd a variety of juices - fourteen options, all made with high-quality and sustainably sourced ingredients. Coffee lovers will also appreciate the premium blends and beans sourced from Uganda and Guatemala. From its architecture to its culinary offerings, the multifaceted nature of Design District blends art and fashion in an ever-evolving space.

But regardless of the suggestions provided, to truly capture its atmosphere, take a stroll on a winter evening and enjoy the scene: cafes bustling with patrons, Emiratis in their Khandura conversing, drinking tea, or smoking shisha.

You will soon notice that d3 offers a refreshing alternative to the typical expat nightlife. This neighborhood, quiet yet vibrant, provides a full immersion in the local culture.

Welcome to Dubai Design District.

BIRTH OF A METROPOLIS

DUBAI ENTERS THE MODERN ERA AND BOOMS LEARN MORE ABOUT CITY’S EVOLUTION FROM A VILLAGE FACED THE SEA TO MODERN-DAY METROPOLIS

text Cecilia Berardi

Below: Sheikh Zayed Road skyscrapers (ph. Len Chapman)

Long before the era of artificial island sand fully automated metro systems, when world records were still waiting to be broken, Qassimi ships navigated the waters of the Arabian Gulf to trade pearls and fish. The land was alive with Bedouins, merchants, caravans, and fleets of explorers.

But in 1966, everything suddenly changed: Dubai struck oil, a discovery that ignited a transformation forever altering the region’s landscape.

The oil revenues, along with the resulting population surge and the push for economic diversification, set the stage for Dubai’s extraordinary development. Small trading postsevolved into dynamic ports and thriving commercial hubs.

As highways and airports became integral to the city’s infrastructure, the early 98 s marked a turning point with the launch of Emirates Airlines, opening Dubai to global connectivity.

Zayed Road, were paved and expanding but still surrounded by vast stretches of desert. The road itself was much quieter than today, with only a few significant buildings dotting its sides, such as the World Trade Centre, which at the time stood as one of the tallest buildings in the region.

Camel caravan scould still be seen in the desert outskirts, and while the contrast between modernity and tradition was evident, the city was slowly beginning to embrace its leaders’ vision for rapid development.

IN THE SPACE OF JUST HALF A CENTURY, DUBAI EXPLODED IN GROWTH, BUILDING MODERN WONDERS SUCH AS BURJ AL ARAB AND BURJ KHALIFA, WHICH ARE NOW FAMOUSLY ASSOCIATED WITH THE

METROPOLIS

Nevertheless, at that time, Dubai still appeared as stretches of desert and sky overlooking the sea. With few urban agglomerations and pristine beaches, the city relied on the area around the Creek as a central hub for trade and commerce.

Wooden dhows sailed the surrounding waters, reflecting the city’s deep connection to its maritime past.

The main roads, including the now-famous Sheikh

It was only in the 99 s that the city’s skyline began to take shape. Sheikh Zayed Road became a major artery for the emirate’s growth, and a new wave of high-rise buildings joined the tallest and most recognizable structures. The development of Jebel Ali Port and the surrounding free zone became key economic drivers, attracting international businesses and investors.

This shift was part of a broader strategy to turn Dubai into a global commercial center. As a result, new office buildings, luxury hotels, and residential complexes started to appear.

Dubai was gradually stepping into modernity, engineering ambitions weret aking shape, and the journey toward iconic status and technological advancement was set in motion.

The era of luxury began.

The opening of the Burj Al Arab in 1999, with itssail-shaped design, marked the city’s bold entry into the world of tourism.

The iconic hotel became a symbol of Dubai’s aspirations to be a refined global destination and a key player in the international tourism scene. New shopping malls, such as the Deira City Centre, emerged, and on the horizon, the artificial island of Palm Jumeirah began to take form.

Overall, the 99 s marked a pivotal period for Dubai, laying the foundations for the explosive growth that would follow in the s. As Dubai faced the new millennium, it emerged as an unstoppable force of innovation and growth, ready to redefine urban living and set new global standards. The Atlantis, The Palm resort on Palm Jumeirah symbolised Dubai’s commitment to luxury and innovation.

came a major attraction for global brands. In this vibrant atmosphere, galleries, desert adventures, and golf clubs flourished. Dubai had taken on its aura as an exotic destination, a land of promising opportunities and a future haven of prosperity.

The world watched in disbelief at the miracle of the desert. Certainly, some skepticism about the sustainability of Dubai’s growth lingered during those years. Yet there came a moment when every doubt was swept away.

THE OPENING OF THE BURJ AL ARAB IN 1999, WITH ITS SAIL-SHAPED DESIGN, MARKED THE CITY’S BOLD ENTRY INTO THE WORLD OF TOURISM

The city also saw the emergence of other striking skyscraper sand neighbourhoods, such as the Emirates Towers and Dubai Marina, contributing to a breathtaking skyline. The city’s infrastructure expanded rapidly, with significant investments in transportation systems.

No place in the world had reached those heights; no city had dared so much. The construction of the Burj Khalifa represented a testament to the tireless pursuit of excellence. “Burj Khalifa: Dubai’s Bold Leap into the Skies!” and “The Rise of a Legend: Burj Khalifa Construction Commences” are just a couple of headlines that captured the excitement as the world welcomed this new record-setting marvel. At that time, the emirate had already embarked on a journey of ambitious projects that further exemplified its innovative spirit, such as The World Islands, a breath taking example of creativity, and the Frame, which connects the city’s rich heritage with its futuristic aspirations.

Today, Dubai has not only cemented its status as a global architectural power house but also continued to redefine innovation and luxury, embodying progress, and inspiring others to reach for greatness.

Paolo Petrocelli, cultural manager, has been appointed as the new Head of the Dubai Opera in the United Arab Emirates

MY BOUNDLESS DUBAI

PAOLO PETROCELLI, HEAD OF THE DUBAI OPERA, TAKES US ON A TOUR OF THE EMIRATI METROPOLIS AND SHARES HIS VISIONS, EXPERIENCE AND ADVICE ON THE MUST-SEE EVENTS text Teresa Favi

CITY

“A contemporary opera house should be a dynamic space which not only celebrates the past, but also looks to the future by integrating the local culture and creating global connections”. These words are by Paolo Petrocelli, an academician and journalist who combined a passion for music and culture with his managerial background. Ever since he was appointed Head of the Dubai Opera in , his goal has been that of transforming the great Emirati city’s major theater into a bridge between the East and West by promoting both the regional cultural heritage and the great international artistic traditions. Dubai Opera’s - season is a clear example of this vision, which aims to fnd the perfect balance between the classical and the contemporary, by staging iconic operas, the most popular classical ballets, but also the great opera and symphonic repertoire, such as Aida, Eugene Onegin, Giselle, Bayadère, The Nutcracker, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and Mozart’s Requiem. But the opera house’s program includes also contemporary dancing shows, musicals and pop, rock, jazz, electronic, ethnic and Arabian music concerts to reach out to a mixed, multicultural and international audience. A young Italian talented man, a cultural management expert and musicologist with a career ranging from the Santa Cecilia Academy to Opera di Roma, two of Italy’s most illustrious music institutions, Petrocelli brought with him a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the unifying power of art.

Mr. Petrocelli, we would like to learn about the fve places in Dubai which make your life enjoyable in this international metropolis throughout the year. I enjoy visiting the art galleries on Alserkal Avenue,

watching jazz performances at the Jass Lounge and dining at Italian restaurants, frst of all, our Belcanto, located on the Dubai Opera’s last foor, which every night celebrates the excellence of Italian cuisine, but also Borro, Scalini and Signor Sassi. I enjoy reading a book at the Etihad Museum’s Library and watching a good movie at the Akil Theater.

Speaking of the Dubai Opera, what are this season’s most ‘Made in Italy’ events?

We will be hosting several events which fully embody Italian excellence in the felds of music, art and culture. Among them are the great Italian operas: this year, we opened our season with a beautiful production of Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida, with the collaboration of Poland’s National Opera. And we are bringing to Dubai some of the greatest Italian soloists. We have already hosted Umberto Tozzi, on the occasion of his latest world tour, and Carla Bruni who, despite her strong ties with France, paid a tribute to her Italian origins by performing some of the great songs of our repertoire. Coming soon is Il Volo, whom the audience is already eagerly waiting for. Among the ‘special events devoted to Italy’ with the collaboration of the Italian representatives in the Emirates, we are planning some more themed events entirely devoted to the Made in Italy, including not only music shows, but also comprehensive cultural experiences. These events are designed to offer our audience a full immersion in the world of Italian excellence. Events which are a tribute to Italy, but are also a way to share with our international audience what makes the Made in Italy so unique: a combination of creativity, elegance and passion.

What event at the Dubai Opera, from December to May, is worth a trip to Dubai?

You can take your pick! From December to May, Dubai Opera hosts a variety of extraordinary events, from concerts by international artists to plays and operas. Every event promises to be a unique and unforgettable experience, making it very hard to choose! For instance, the premiere in November of the Singin’ in the Rain musical, which will be performed for the frst time in the Middle East, the New Year’s Eve gala event starring DJ Parov Stellar and the concert by the Limitless Orchestra with the special appearance of Hans Zimmer in January.

What is the must-try experience at ‘your’ theater, besides being a member of the audience?

with different history and tradition. In addition, our food & beverage services (pre-concert dining, pre and post-concert drinks) and the Belcanto restaurant’s offerings complete the cultural experience, by providing a culinary journey that excites the senses. This combination of art and cuisine makes the visit to Dubai Opera a truly memorable experience, enriching every event with unique favors and atmospheres.

What is your favourite spot at the theater?

FROM DECEMBER TO MAY, DUBAI OPERA HOSTS A VARIETY OF EXTRAORDINARY EVENTS, FROM CONCERTS BY INTERNATIONAL

Our opera house, with its futuristic and iconic design, is not only a stage, but a work of art in itself and offers an extraordinary immersion into a unique cultural context. Every visit is a journey of the senses, starting from the breathtaking architecture which embodies Dubai’s innovative and creative spirit.

ARTISTS TO PLAYS AND OPERAS

A truly must-try experience is the chance to interact with a global audience. Dubai Opera attracts visitors from every corner of the world, creating a vibrant and multicultural atmosphere.

This diversity adds to the experience, allowing cultural exchanges and new connections between people

I have two favourite spots at the Dubai Opera. One is the backstage, where all the magic comes to life.

That is where you can perceive the emotions, the energy and dedication of all those who work untiringly to create an unforgettable experience. Watching the technicians and artists getting ready and collaborate is amazingly fascinating.

The other spot is when I sit at the back of the house during the shows.

From there I can observe the audience being completely captured by the emotions of every performance.

Watching the reactions, the smiles and tears of joy is an extraordinary experience, which reminds me that art has the power to bring people together and touch their heart.

Both these moments, in the backstage and in the house, represent to me the throbbing heart of Dubai Opera and sum up the best part of my life in this city.

THE TRADING QUEEN

OUR INTERVIEW WITH SILVIA

THE

VIANELLO,
ITALIAN FINANCIAL MARKET EXPERT, IN LOVE WITH DUBAI text Teresa Favi

Silvia Vianello, born in Venice, Italy, has been studying fnancial markets her whole life, since she received her PhD in economics. She has had an illustrious career as MBA and EMBA professor at prestigious business schools in Paris, New York, Houston and Dubai. She worked as Marketing Manager for Maserati across 4 countries. Today, she is committed to trading in regulated fnancial markets, while pursuing teaching and career coaching as a hobby. Known as the ‘Trading Queen’, she currently lives in Dubai and, through education projects, she promotes fnancial independence by frmly believing that “When people have control over their fnances, they have control over their future”.

Silvia, how long have you been living and working in Dubai?

SILVIA

IS A WORLDRENOWNED EXPERT AS A CAREER AND FINANCIAL COACH

Since 7, when the Burj Khalifa was already the star, but the city was not as ‘futuristic’ as it is now. While I was learning to orient myself amidst skyscrapers and deserts, Dubai was growing with me. What do you remember about the early days?

I could tell you about the frst time I discovered the existence of a camel wash or the time I was desperately looking for a traffc-less street at rush hour to move from the Marina to the DIFC for dinner, all in vain.

And now, how much do you know about Dubai?

I know every single corner of this city, from the traditional mar-

kets fragrant with the aroma of spices to the rooftop bars with breathtaking view of the skyline.

Why did you move to the Emirates?

Because of the ‘hot climate’ and I’m not talking about the weather. Dubai is a veritable crossroads of opportunities.

One day I thought: “Why should I face another dreary winter when I can work by the sea all year round?” And what is more, it is a very safe city for women. I was aware that what awaited me was an irresistible mix of business, adventure and a bit of that Arabian magic that makes you feel like being on a movie set every day.

How is your ‘Italianness’ perceived in the trading feld?

When you hear the word ‘Made in Italy’, the frst things that come to your mind are fashion, food and design, so people look at me with a mix of curiosity and incredulity, expecting to see me wearing a designer bag rather than tackling charts and fgures. But this is the beauty of Italiannesss: we know how to adapt, to innovate and bring our creativity everywhere. In the trading feld, like in the fashion world, you need to have an eye for details, to be able to seize the moment and manage risk… It’s like making perfect pizza: you mix different ingredients - in this case, fnance, analysis, risk management and creativity- in order to achieve the best result. After all, trading is an art too.

VIANELLO
MyTradingWay is professional project Silvia Vianello is the most excited to work on right now in Dubai, to increase people’s financial literacy (ph. Marco Morelli)

What does it mean to be Italian in the fnance world?

It means applying the ‘ know how’ art to all the decisions I make. My Italianness has a huge part in my being able to adapt quickly and to fnd creative solutions to complex problems. And when it comes to teaching, it is useful in communication and in mixing the logic of numbers with the warmth and passion required to educate students. What professional project are you the most excited to work on right now?

Defnitely MyTradingWay, to increase people’s fnancial literacy. I believe that more fnancial awareness gives people control over their economic future. Our commitment is to provide them with the tools and skills required to do it.

As former Maserati marketing manager, what is the Made in Italy?

A symbol of passion, excellence and creativity. The perfect blend of style, innovation and tradition. It is also synonymous with audacity: being daring, being different, creating something that does not necessarily go by the book, but establishes new standards. What do the Emiratis like the most about the Italian market and our lifestyle?

the Amalf Coast is their wish to enjoy an authentic and fully immersive experience. Furthermore, they love Italian cuisine: Italian trattorias and restaurants in Dubai are often full of customers in search of an authentic culinary experience. What are your three favorite Italian places in Dubai?

I like Eataly, which offers a lovely selection of Italian food and wine, it is not, however, a mere supermarket, but also a restaurant and culinary center where you can attend cooking and tasting classes. Da Massimo’s restaurant and ice-cream shop at Dubai Marina, famous for its pizzas and homemade ice cream. The Dubai Opera, which regularly hosts Italian opera productions, concerts and shows that celebrate Italian culture, the perfect place for an immersive cultural experience.

IN THE TRADING FIELD, LIKE IN THE FASHION WORLD, YOU NEED TO HAVE AN EYE FOR DETAILS, TO BE ABLE TO SEIZE THE MOMENT AND MANAGE RISK

The Emiratis admire Italy for its sophisticated luxury, its matchless high craftsmanship and for the relaxed and authentic life experience it offers. All this is refected in the products they choose in Dubai, but also in the experiences they go looking for when visiting or investing in Italy. The motivation for destinations such as Tuscany, Lake Como and

What do you love about Dubai and what is the best thing about living in this metropolis in your experience?

Living in Dubai means being surrounded by a cosmopolitan environment, where different cultures meet, creating a vibrant and inclusive community. It is a place where every day brings new opportunities, and the combination of modernity, safety and a global community makes this metropolis a special place that you can call home.

On a day off (I suppose a rare thing), where do you take your favorite walk in the city?

Defnitely at Dubai Marina, where I live and which reminds me so much of Venice, my hometown.

Your motto?

Shine like a star in the sky of opportunities!

D3 DREAMS

Dubai Design Week, the leading design fair in the Middle East, is celebrating its tenth birthday. This November, as every year, emerging and and internationally renowned designers will showcase their world view and achievements in the form of installations, exhibitions and experiences in general. The tenth edition of Dubai Design Week, taking place at Dubai Design District – better known as d3, a global ecosystem of creativity that encompasses design, fashion, architecture and art – focuses on planning for a sustainable future.

The key features of Dubai Design Week are as follows: DOWNTOWN DESIGN – THE FAIR

The main event in Dubai’s week-long programme is Downtown Design, aimed at anyone seeking the latest trends in interior design, furniture, lighting and household accessories. This year’s fair returns to its original home on Waterfront Terrace. Acclaimed as the Middle East’s leading event for high-quality contemporary design, Downtown Design presents the latest collections, innovative products and design solutions, alongside a series of pop-up creative concepts, installations and networking events, plus debates, keynote talks and masterclasses at the venue’s Forum. This edition of the fair will feature some top international brands: Haberdashery marks its debut in the region with a made-to-measure composition of Sand & Sea; Kartell once again showcases its latest collections of industrial and contemporary design; Poltrona Frau displays its timeless pieces created in collaboration with well-known names including Faye Toogood, Draga & Aurel and Sebastian Herkner; B&B Italia exhibits its iconic furnishings for interiors and

exteriors, presented by the brand’s local partner Baituti Home.

Casa Milano also returns this year with an immersive space featuring the design challenge Talking Walls, which invites eight leading Arab Emirates design studios to create and build concepts in response to a randomly-chosen word.

Among other highlights is Obegi Home, which presents an array of contemporary luxury, with brands of the likes of Flexform, Poliform and Antonio Lupi; and Caspaiou, with a multi-brand display of designer pieces by Meridiani and Gallotti&Radice, to name just a couple.

In the national pavilions area, the Italian Trade Agency is back at Downtown Design with over 40 brands and producers, confrming Italy’s heritage of craftsmanship and innovation; Designed in Saudi, a strategic initiative by the Saudi Ministry of Culture’s Design and Architecture Committee, which highlights the kingdom’s creative talent and this year introduces nine new design studios; Interiors from Spain, with ten brands in a dynamic exhibition designed and curated by B8 Architecture & Design of Dubai; and the Dutch Collective, headed by Margriet Vollenberg, which launched at the 2023 Downtown Design and returns for the second consecutive year with seven Dutch designers.

Don’t miss: a large-scale foral installation made by the Dutch artist Linda Nieuwstad using recycled everyday materials including truck tarps, old woollen blankets and construction sheets; and the open-air pavilion of the Dubai-based architecture and interior design studio Bone, made solely with pre-formed blocks of compacted

It’s little wonder that the model has ignited such a strong passion in the hearts of Ferrari connoisseurs, being so steeped in nostalgia. Afterall, the naturally-aspirated, mid-front-mounted V12 was the very frst Ferrari engine to roar its way through the factory gates in Maranello. The Ferrari 12Cilindri is inspired by the legendary Grand Tourers of the s and ‘ s, embodying the front-mounted Ferrari V12 two-seater mission with its effortless combination of elegance, versatility, and performance. The car represents the latest evolution in this bloodline and continues that unique legacy, elevating it towards new standards in performance, comfort, and design. Its silhouette exudes

sportiness and class: simple yet harmonious lines feature an integrated active aerodynamic device to guarantee peerless performance, a front-hinged bonnet that exalts the view of the engine bay, and the two twin tailpipes that have become a signature of Ferrari’s 12-cylinder cars.

PUREST EXPRESSION OF FERRARI’S SOUL: THE ENGINE

Unsurprisingly, the purest expression of Ferrari’s soul can be found in the engine - the F HD engine equipping the Ferrari 12Cilindri is the new version of the iconic naturally-aspirated Ferrari V12. Its peerless performance, powerful soundtrack and exclusivity make it the worthy heir to the legendary berlinetta sports cars that wrote some of the most glittering chapters in the marque’s history. The engine can unleash up to cv while its max revs have been increased to rpm by adopting challenging and innovative solutions. Most of the modifcations focused on optimising torque delivery in all operating conditions. The result is an engine with exhilaratingly smooth, seamless response, that delivers peak power at the red line.

INGENIOUS SOFTWARE FOR A TRULY UNIQUE AND EXHILARATING DRIVING EXPERIENCE

The application of ingenious software, for the very frst time on a naturally aspirated engine, enables the 12Cilindri to provide a truly unique and exhilarating driving experience. The maximum torque can be modifed as part of the gear selected, which give the driver the feeling of a highly smooth progressive pick-up as the transmission ratio increases.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS INCLUDE EMISSIONS REDUCTION

A notable enhanced element and one that demonstrates

Ferrari’s commitment to a keen environmental agenda is the new exhaust system, developed to allow the car to comply with the latest emissions requirements (EU E, China B and BIN ), which introduces a ceramic catalytic converter coupled with a particulate flter, the most advanced emissions-reduction technology available. In addition, for the frst time on a Ferrari production car, a secondary alloy with % recycled material has been used to make the shock towers of the gearbox subframe: its introduction allows a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of kg of CO for every car produced.

I DESIGN, THEREFORE I AM

He has roots in Puglia and Milan, but he describes himself as a contemporary nomad. Having taken over as Creative Director of his family’s company Natuzzi – a leading Made in Italy producer of fne designer furniture, known for its combination of artisan tradition and innovation –, Pasquale Junior Natuzzi has shifted the focus of his attention from the product to the experience.

With a network of some over monobrand stores (as of . . ) around the world, he has come up with a communication strategy that transforms sales points and showrooms into theatrical stage sets. In the meantime, partly thanks to original collaborations with globally renowned designers, he has turned Natuzzi Italia into a lifestyle brand that’s attracting new generations of consumers with its experiential, opensource approach that blends design and communication, events and interactive projects. NATUZZI ITALIA, CHOOSES THE STAGE OF DUBAI DESIGN WEEK

TO CONTINUE THE PROGRAM OF EVENTS AND PROJECTS CREATED TO CELEBRATE THE BRAND’S 65TH

ANNIVERSARY

I wanted to revamp the Natuzzi style in order to add value to its DNA and make it even more appealing. I did that by shifting the focus from the product to the experience, and elevating the concept of aesthetics. Natuzzi’s mission is to foster the idea of wellbeing by means of the mediterranean lifestyle, which is naturally hospitable, eternally beautiful and, of course, sustainable. To achieve this, we offer furniture that tells an engaging

At Dubai Design Week we continue the celebrations for the th anniversary of the founding of our company. Six and a half decades ago, Natuzzi set out on a journey in search of harmony, inspired by the fertile region of Puglia, which nurtured my father’s creativity and his ethical approach to business. These values have marked the company’s story throughout the development of its identity and style. Our new collection, The Circle of Harmony – 65th Anniversary traces the evolution of the brand in the past, present and future through projects by Karim Rashid, Andrea Steidl and Simone Bonanni. With his contemporary interpretation of the welcoming, generous lines of the Memoria sofa, Karim Rashid reimagines it as an ode to mediterranean hospitality.

It’s a modular sofa that puts a modern twist on the joys of gathering and on Natuzzi’s vocation for harmony, comfort and design. Memoria re-shapes the reassuring lines of the past to create ergonomics that are even more comfortable, even at frst sight.

How is Made in Italy design seen in Dubai?

We live in a globalised world in which products increasingly tend to become commodities. The real difference lies in offering authentic items that are shaped by the expert hands of Italian artisans, and unique in terms of quality and attention to detail. The savoir-faire of Italian companies, their heritage and their wealth of expertise help to create a distinctive lifestyle that’s appreciated all over the world. In Dubai too, that aspect is extremely valued and sought-after.

Dubai is the new global lifestyle destination, and you’re working on a prestigious residential project in Deira. What’s it about, and when is it scheduled to open?

On November we’ll be presenting Natuzzi Harmony residences, the group’s frst residential project. At the heart of the project is the mediterranean lifestyle and the concept of hospitality that’s inherent in the Italian region where our roots lie, Puglia, along with the harmonious living spaces we’ve taken all over the world for the past years. The properties are designed for sophisticated homeowners who not only want their private residence to be a personal space, but also a place where amenities are key, and are designed with hospitality in mind. Every space is conceived to offer a high-level experience in which comfort, elegance and amenities come together in an atmosphere that refects the property’s exclusivity.

Tell us about your Dubai, in personal discoveries, special places to make an Italian heart sing, and those where the future lifestyle has already arrived.

Dubai’s innovative spirit and dynamism reminds me a bit of New York in the noughties, a place that’s constantly changing, with loads of new companies springing up in line with global trends. It’s fascinating, but also hard work keeping up with the city’s frenzied pace. One of the places I’m particularly fond of is defnitely Nonna Chic Dubai, a restaurant that gives me the genuine favours of home.

‘ON NOVEMBER WE’LL BE PRESENTING NATUZZI HARMONY RESIDENCES, THE GROUP’S FIRST RESIDENTIAL PROJECT. IT HAS AT THE HEART THE CONCEPT OF THE MEDITERRANEAN LIFESTYLE AND ITALIAN HOSPITALITY’

Their pizza is an absolute must, a no-brainer. I also enjoy the warm Greek-style atmosphere of Nammos. Even though it’s a pretty well-known place, it always offers fantastic quality and fun.

Your personal passions, other than work and family?

Music, fashion, sport, cooking and travel are my sources of inspiration on a daily basis. Music has always been an important part of my life. Growing up, I was infuenced by my father, who sought beauty in an eclectic way, in all its forms. This led me to become passionate about fashion. Sports is a place where I can express myself. It also takes me back to my childhood. Cooking is another great passion of mine. I believe that food unites people and tells stories. Finally, travel is what keeps me alive.

Your motto?

Dream. Believe. Achieve.
