Will the news of the calendars,

the themes proposed by the trends, the necessity of

animating the markets and the quality of the European textiles, be enough to blow away the clouds of the global financial crisis?

To these and to other questions, the European textile-clothing system are looking

for the answers through the fairs in Milan, Munich and Paris, the classic February appointments but, this year, they have been put in a curious and maybe positive competition by a complex and compressed calendar of dates.

If the dates somehow create a fracture, the fabrics and the production of the Italian companies create, instead, a fil rouge throughout the fairs, meeting and exchange points for the experts.

Three occasions to take advantage of, in this moment when Made in Italy needs to be reinforced and promote its presence on the international market: The ideas are not missing, new textiles either, professional experts, trend watchers, managers and stylists do the rest.

It will then be the turn of the economy to walk round the corner, in the hope that, having gone round it, there will be an improvement in business and orders that will save jobs, currently at risk, and districts that are suffering after the last three months of a disastrous 2008.

Basteranno le novità nei calendari, i temi proposti dalle tendenze, la necessità di animare il mercato e la qualità dei tessuti europei per far passare le nubi provocate dalla crisi finanziaria globale?

A queste e ad altre domande il sistema del tessile-abbigliamento europeo cerca risposta nelle fiere di Milano, Monaco di Baviera e Parigi, appuntamenti classici del mese di febbraio ma, da quest’anno, messi in curiosa e chissà quanto positiva concorrenza tra loro da un calendario complesso e compresso. Milano e Monaco di Baviera per la prima volta in contemporanea, Parigi dopo una settimana, come di solito, ma tutte con sette giorni di anticipo rispetto al calendario classico.

Se le date in qualche modo creano una frattura, i tessuti e la produzione delle aziende italiane creano invece un filo comune che lega le tre fiere, punto d’incontro e di scambio degli addetti ai lavori. Tre occasioni da sfruttare in un momento in cui il made in Italy ha bisogno di rafforzare e aumentare la presenza sul mercato internazionale: le idee non mancano, i nuovi materiali neppure, la professionalità di tecnici, curatori di tendenze, imprenditori e stilisti fanno il resto. Poi toccherà all’economia svoltare l’angolo, nella speranza che dopo la svolta si presenti una ripresa degli affari e degli ordini che possa salvare i posti di lavoro a rischio ed i distretti che stanno soffrendo dopo un ultimo trimestre di 2008 da brividi.

Antonio Marras has always operated on parallel lines. He is both an intellectual and a craftsman, traditional and innovative, popular and absolutely elite. It’s not a game with sides: the result is magic in its authenticity, equilibrium and the passion distilled in his creations, fold after fold, embroidery after embroidery.

It all began by chance in 1987, when he was employed by a Roman company to design a new pàp line. In 1996,in Rome, during the haute couture, he presented his first collection, with his name, in which there were all the keys to the Marras style: the folklore of his homeland, the “legaccio rubio”, a very personal leitmotif, vintage, decoration, embroidery. Three years later he was in Milan with his womenswear prêt à porter and in 2002, he presented his first menswear collection at Pitti Immagine Uomo. In 2003 he was nominated artistic director of the Kenzo maison, a new job which Marras took on with his inimitable savoir faire. The latest chapter in this creative development, is the creation of a second line, I’M Isola Marras, on sale in shops from August 2008. Directed exclusively at a female public (the men’s line should come out ready for S/S P/E 2010), I’M ISOLA MARRAS is planned to spread the spirit and typical essence of the Marras Maison, bringing it into the band of easy-daily-wear. In the new line, there are all the alphabet codes of Antonio Marras, from the embroidery to the decorations, up to the use of a variety of fabrics and patterns for the same article. The extraordinary quality-price relationship which makes these articles accessible to a very wide market..

“In a sense, I’M is my B side” explains the stylist “While the main collection reflects my more nostalgic, melancholic side, with I’M, I have given rein to my playful side. It is a cheerful, fizzy collection which doesn’t take itself too seriously: in fact, on the label, the linings and some corners of the articles, there is Pepeddu, the mascot dog of my studio in Alghero and symbol of the label”.

We met Antonio Marras on the eve of the opening of two of the most important appointments of the textile sector, Milano Unica and Premiere Vision, in order to talk about his first love: fabrics.

Da sempre Antonio Marras agisce su un duplice binario. E’ intellettuale e artigiano, tradizionale e innovativo, popolare e assolutamente d’elite. Non è un gioco delle parti: il risultato incanta per l’autenticità, l’equilibrio e la passione che i suoi abiti distillano, piega dopo piega, ricamo dopo ricamo.

Comincia per puro caso nel 1987, quando viene chiamato da una ditta romana a disegnare una linea di pàp. Nel 1996, a Roma durante la haute couture, presenta la prima collezione con il suo nome in cui sono già presenti tutti gli elementi chiave dello stile Marras: il folklore della sua terra, il “legaccio rubio”, un fil rouge altamente personale, il vintage, le decorazioni, i ricami. Tre anni più tardi arriva a Milano con il prêt à porter donna e nel 2002 presenta a Pitti Immagine Uomo la prima collezione maschile. E’ del 2003 la nomina come direttore artistico della maison Kenzo, un nuovo incarico che Marras interpreta con il suo consueto grado di personalità.

Ultimo capitolo del percorso creativo dello stilista la creazione di una seconda linea, I’M Isola Marras, in vendita nei negozi da agosto 2008. Rivolta esclusivamente al pubblico femminile (si prevede il lancio della linea uomo entro la P/E 2010), I’M ISOLA MARRAS è progettata per esprimere e diffondere lo spirito e l’essenza tipici della maison Marras declinandoli in un easy-daily-wear. Nella nuova linea si ritrovano tutti i codici dell’alfabeto di Antonio Marras, dai ricami alle decorazioni, fino all’utilizzo di più tessuti e fantasie in un unico capo. Lo straordinario rapporto qualità-prezzo rende questi capi accessibili ad un pubblico più vasto. “ In un certo senso, I’M è il mio lato B” spiega lo stesso stilista “Mentre nella collezione principale ho sempre esaltato il mio cotè più nostalgico, malinconico, retrò, con I’M ho dato sfogo alla mia vena più ludica, giocosa, divertente. E’ una collezione sfiziosa, allegra, frizzante, che non si prende troppo sul serio: del resto, sulle etichette, sulle fodere, da qualche parte su ogni singolo capo è presente Pepeddu, il cagnolino mascotte del mio studio di Alghero ed eletto simbolo del marchio”.

Abbiamo incontrato Antonio Marras alla vigilia dell’apertura dei più importanti appuntamenti del settore tessile, Milano Unica e Premiere Vision, per parlare del suo primo amore: i tessuti.

I'M Isola Marras Some stylists seem to have particularly sensitive antenna which are able to capture and interpret phenomena which are still embryonic. You are, without doubt, one of these, can you give us some indication of new trends in future fashion?

When I think about a collection, my first worries aren’t the tendencies. Somebody wrote, a while back, that “Antonio Marras is a stylist outside those tendencies which create tendencies.”. I take it as a compliment, extremely gratifying, I would really like this to be an accurate definition of me. I do what I feel like doing at the time, whether it coincides or not with the “tendency”: I’d never be able to make myself work in another way, a different approach which only considers the desires of the market. Up to now I’ve been lucky, clients have appreciated and understood my way of working.

What would you like to see in the next edition of Premiere Vision?

What I find every time: fabrics which surprise me, fabrics which I had never imagined and which I fall in love with every time. The extraordinary atmosphere helps: When there is a fashion event in Paris, it’s as though the whole city is involved and this is its strength. I hope Milan, sooner or later, will also manage to create this atmosphere, an atmosphere of fashion lived with enthusiasm by the entire city.

Beyond fashion and trends, what particular textile would you, Antonio Marras, like to see developed?

I’m crazy about materials, to the point where there doesn’t exist a single fabric of desire. I prefer to be surprised every time I meet something new. I love the feel, the weight, the way it reflects the light, the way it hangs in fluid waves or crisp folds. I not only go to the specialized fairs, but I also go assiduously to the markets to look at old and antique fabrics and study the designs, I rework them and get them made up. This is the sensual aspect of my work. Sometimes I’ve been criticized for being too austere, for “covering” too much. But in the finishing of the fabrics, the ribbons and lace, there is an erotic potential which maybe less explicit but is very strong.

Alcuni stilisti sembrano avere antenne particolari per captare e tradurre in uno stile fenomeni ancora in embrione. Lei, sicuramente dotato di queste antenne, ci può segnalare qualcosa di particolare e nuovo per prossimi scenari della moda?

Quando penso ad una collezione, non sono le tendenze la mia prima preoccupazione. Qualcuno ha scritto, qualche tempo fa, che “Antonio Marras è uno stilista fuori dalle tendenze che fa tendenza”. Mi sembra un complimento bellissimo e gratificante, vorrei davvero che questa definizione fosse quella giusta. Io faccio quello che sento di fare in quel momento, che coincida o no con le “tendenze”: non sarei mai in grado di impormi qualcos’altro, un modo diverso di procedere solo per assecondare il mercato. Fino ad oggi sono stato fortunato, i clienti hanno apprezzato e capito il mio discorso.

Cosa vorrebbe trovare alla prossima edizione di Premiere Vision?

Quello che trovo ogni volta: il tessuto che mi sorprende, quello a cui non avevo pensato e di cui puntualmente mi innamoro. Complice l’atmosfera unica che si respira in quei giorni: a Parigi quando c’è un appuntamento con la moda è come se lo vivesse tutta la città e questa è la sua forza. Mi auguro che anche a Milano si riesca, prima o poi, a far respirare con più entusiasmo il fashion a tutta la città.

Oltre la moda e i trend, qual è il tessuto dei desideri di Antonio Marras?

Amo così pazzamente i materiali, al punto che non esiste un tessuto dei desideri per me. Preferisco farmi sorprendere ogni volta dall’incontro con la materia. Amo la consistenza, il peso, il modo di rispondere alla luce, di cadere a onde fluide o a pieghe spezzate. Oltre che delle fiere di settore, sono un grande frequentatore dei mercatini, in cui faccio incetta di stoffe antiche e vecchie, ne studio i disegni, li rielaboro e li faccio riprodurre. E’ l’aspetto sensuale del mio lavoro. A volte è stato rimproverato di essere formalmente austero, di “coprire” troppo. Ma nelle superfici dei tessuti, dei nastri, dei pizzi c’è un potenziale erotico magari meno esplicito, ma fortissimo.

What is your relationship like with the Italian and French textile companies? From loyalty to research into new proposals?

Of loyalty and research, reciprocal respect and collaboration. I was born and grew up, literally, in my father’s fabric shop, totally fascinated by those enormous bales of material for which I still today, have a particular passion: notwithstanding ever increasing pressures of work, I always try to go to the fairs myself and choose the fabrics for my collections. This is the part of my work which I could never delegate completely: in fact, it is the first, essential step in the “construction” of a collection. My relationship with fabrics is wonderful, I love working with them, experimenting, trying out yarns and often, the most beautiful fabrics are created by mistakes made on the looms. I have created a sort of archive of textiles and, for me, looking at them is like winding back a film, an emotional experience.

“Your” Sardinia has recently been chosen to welcome the young American President on the occasion of G8. Can you envisage any of the scenarios of this event, can you help us to identify the soul of the project?

Impossible, and very premature, to talk about my G8 project at this time, given that my involvement only happened a week ago! Certainly I should say that the best things happen when they are least looked for, It’s always been that way for me. Guido Bertolaso (head of Italian Civil Protection) came to my house in Alghero at the beginning of January and asked me to take part in the project. A bit recklessly, I accepted: it’s a challenge which makes me feel part of an historic occasion. My job will be to involve potentates from all over, in the Sardinian atmosphere: the participants of G8 must be overwhelmed by the atmosphere of the island, they must go away with a definite, powerful image and magic memories. Nobody should be able to forget where they have been. That is my job.

Qual è il suo rapporto con i tessutai, italiani o francesi? Di fedeltà o è alla continua ricerca di nuove proposte?

Di fedeltà e ricerca, di stima reciproca e collaborazione. Io sono nato e letteralmente cresciuto nel negozio di tessuti di mio padre, completamente affascinato da quei rotoli enormi di stoffa per i quali ancora oggi conservo una passione particolare: nonostante gli impegni sempre più pressanti, cerco il più possibile di partecipare personalmente alle fiere ed alla scelta dei tessuti per le mie collezioni. Questa è proprio una parte del lavoro che non riuscirò mai a delegare completamente: anzi, è il primo fondamentale passo per la “costruzione” di tutta la collezione. Il mio rapporto con i tessutai è meraviglioso, adoro lavorare con loro, sperimentare, provare i filati. Spesso, i tessuti più belli nascono da errori dei telai. Ho creato una specie di archivio dei tessuti e per me rimirarlo è come vedere un film, uno spettacolo emozionante.

La “sua” Sardegna è stata scelta per accogliere il giovane Presidente americano durante il prossimo G8. Ci descrive alcuni scenari che immagina per l’evento, permettendoci di cogliere l’anima del suo progetto?

Impossibile, oltre che totalmente prematuro, parlare in questo momento del mio progetto per il G8, dato che il mio coinvolgimento risale a circa una settimana fa!

Di certo posso affermare che le cose migliori capitano quando non le cerchi. A me è sempre successo così. Guido Bertolaso (capo della Protezione Civile italiana) è stato a casa mia ad Alghero a inizio gennaio e mi ha chiesto di far parte del progetto. Con la mia incoscienza ho accettato: è una sfida che mi fa sentire partecipe di un grande momento. Il mio compito sarà coinvolgere i potenti della terra con tutti i loro sensi nelle atmosfere sarde: i partecipanti al G8 dovranno essere investiti in pieno dall’anima intensa dell’isola, dovranno avere un ricordo indelebile della Sardegna. Nessuno dovrà dimenticare di essere stato lì. Ecco il mio compito.

Isabella Tonchi, born in 1963, Florentine by birth but Milanese by adoption, abandoned her linguistic studies to concentrate on fashion, motivated by the enthusiasm of Elio Fiorucci,who noticed her for her original style of dressing. Over 20 years of working in fashion with important names of made in Italy, have created a prestigious background which have led to the creation of her own label. She became famous with “Who’s on next” , during which she presented her s/s 2006 collection. The rest is recent history, a success story and a style which re-elaborates the classic lines with her own, personal touch.

Before creating your own line, you worked for almost twenty years with important brands. Can you tell us about it?

It was a very interesting learning experience. You never finish learning in this field, and working is the best schooling. To be able to work with stylists and prestigious brands is very hard work but also very stimulating.

How did the creation of your own brand come about? To express what needs?

I think it was “physiological” after years of work and research, you develop your own creative code which needs to be consolidated and communicated.

The sources of your inspiration?

I do a lot of research: ethnic travelling, looking for alternative fabrics and techniques. I study vintage and military pieces in order to construct new proportions. I also buy a lot of magazines and books about fashion, art, music, in order not to lose touch and to stay in Isabella Tonchi, classe 1963, fiorentina di nascita ma ormai milanese d’adozione, lascia gli studi linguistici per dedicarsi alla moda spinta dall’entusiasmo di Elio Fiorucci, che la nota per il suo stile originale nel vestire.

Oltre 20 anni di collaborazioni nella moda con importanti realtà del made in Italy, le creano un background importante che la porta a firmare una linea con il suo nome. La notorietà al pubblico arriva con il concorso Who’s on next , durante il quale presenta la collezione p/e 2006. Il resto è storia recente, una storia di successi crescenti e di uno stile che rielabora le linee classiche con taglio personale.

Prima di creare una sua linea ha collaborato per quasi venti anni con importanti brand.

Ci parla di questa esperienza?

E’ stata un’esperienza molto interessante e formativa. In questo lavoro non si finisce mai di imparare e lavorare è la migliore scuola. Avere l’opportunità di collaborare con stilisti e brand di prestigio è tanto impegnativo quanto stimolante.

Come è avvenuto il passaggio a un suo brand? Per dare voce a quali esigenze?

Penso che sia “fisiologico”: dopo anni di lavoro e ricerca si sviluppa un proprio codice creativo che si ha la necessità di affermare e comunicare.

Le sue fonti di ispirazione?

Faccio molta ricerca: viaggi etnici in cerca di tessuti e tecniche tessili alternative. Studio capi vintage e militari per la costruzione di nuove proporzioni.

The fabrics are the pillars which support the collection. They must be of good quality and be the right fabric to express the form of the article, the print and the colour. Often, I not only select the fabrics but I create them in order to get exactly what I want for each creation.

What will you be looking for at the next fashion fairs?

The textile fairs permit me to meet the new textile companies, to see their products and their potential.

The next autumn winter collection: what colours and finishes have you chosen?

I have used compact double cashmere, angora and silk. The print is in digital quadrichrome, tending to grey and turquoise tones, embroidered with swarovski crystals.

A preview of the s/s 2010 Collection?

I can’t say much now. Only two words: ethnic futurism Acquisto anche tante riviste e libri di moda, arte, musica per non perdere il contatto con la realtà che ci circonda e intuirne i cambiamenti.

Quali sono i codici dominanti dello stile Isabella Tonchi?

Comfort, qualità, originalità Nella fase creativa, quanto conta la selezione dei tessuti?

I tessuti sono i pilastri che sorreggono la collezione. Devono essere di qualità e sposarsi alla forma, alla stampa, al colore. Spesso non solo li seleziono, ma li creo per meglio corrispondere alle esigenze creative del momento.

Cosa cerca alle prossime fiere del settore?

Le fiere di tessuti mi servono soprattutto a conoscere nuove aziende tessili, i loro prodotti e le loro potenzialità.

La collezione per il prossimo autunno inverno: colori e superfici che ha privilegiato.

Ho utilizzato superfici compatte in cachemere double, angora e seta. Le stampe sono in quadricromia digitale, virate nei toni del grigio e del turchese e ricamate di cristalli swarovski.

Anticipazioni per la collezione p/e 2010...

Per adesso posso dire poco. Solo due parole: futurismo etnico.

Gabriele Colangelo

Couture cuts for Tagli couture per codici culturali cultural codes di Francesca Lombardi Gabriele Colangelo is cultured: from the beginning of the talk, “cultured” is the adjective that one associates with the young stylist, regarding the notable culture that distinguishes him. In his thoughts of art, literature and fashion, he ties them together and rebuilds volumes and cuts to then recompose them in a personal elegant style. If he hadn’t become a stylist he would have continued his studies in literature, a future professor with a passion for drawing. However, natural inclinations are hard to silence and “the brainwave on the via of Damasco” arrived quite early, his accomplice, the family’s own company of furs, known for their collaboration with important maison.

When did you start working?

I started working in ’98, when I won a contest organized by the Camera Nazionale della Moda. For the winner, the prize was an internship with the group Itierre in Isernia. I collaborated with the creation of the Versace Jeans Couture line, of which I almost immediately became creative director. After four years at Itierre, I was called by the maison to draw the first line of the women’s collection, the Versace Classic. Then I collaborated with Roberto Cavalli and Gruppo Mariella Burani, where I became creative director of the first line Amuleti J. Since December 2008 I have decided to create my own line, which, last February, I managed to show on the catwalks of the fashion week. Winning the competition Who’s on next is the most recent chapter of my professional career.

Working with different brands, keepers of a heterogeneous stylist code, they have, therefore, been an important test bed for your experience in the world of fashion?

Yes, especially my experience in Itierre was important because I followed the whole process of production, from the drawing to the realization of the garment. All the way to the product entering the markets, with a tight collaboration with the commercial network of the brand. The experience with Gianni Versace was, instead, more related to the glamour world, and the fashion shows, just as important from another point of view. At Roberto Cavalli I intensified my knowledge of prints. It was with Amuleti J that I finally Gabriele Colangelo è colto: fin dal primo scambio di battute, l’aggettivo che associ al giovane stilista riguarda la notevole portata culturale che lo contraddistingue. Nel suo percorso di pensiero arte, letteratura e moda sono indissolubilmente legate a ricostruire volumi e tagli. Che poi si ricompongono in uno stile elegante e personale. Se non fosse diventato stilista avrebbe continuato gli studi di Lettere, futuro professore con la passione per il disegno. Ma le inclinazioni naturali sono difficili da mettere a tacere e “la folgorazione sulla via di Damasco” arriva piuttosto presto, complice l’azienda di pellicceria di famiglia, nota per le collaborazioni con importanti maison.

Quando è iniziato il suo percorso lavorativo?

Il mio percorso è iniziato nel ’98, quando ho vinto un concorso organizzato dalla Camera Nazionale della Moda. Per il vincitore era previsto uno stage che ho realizzato presso il Gruppo Itierre a Isernia. Ho collaborato alla realizzazione della linea Versace Jeans Couture, di cui sono diventato quasi subito responsabile creativo. Dopo quattro anni alla Itierre sono stato chiamato direttamente dalla maison per disegnare la prima linea di diffusione della donna, la Versace Classic. Sono seguite una collaborazione con la Roberto Cavalli e poi con il Gruppo Mariella Burani, dove sono diventato direttore creativo della linea Amuleti J. Da dicembre 2008 ho deciso di creare una mia linea, con cui lo scorso febbraio ho sfilato durante la settimana della moda. La vittoria al concorso Who’s on next è il capitolo più recente del mio percorso professionale.

Le collaborazioni con marchi diversi, custodi di un codice stilistico eterogeneo, sono state quindi un importante banco di prova per quanto riguarda la sua esperienza nel mondo della moda?

Si, soprattutto la mia esperienza in Itierre è stata una esperienza importante perché ho seguito da vicino tutta la filiera di produzione, dal disegno alla realizzazione del capo. Fino all’ingresso del prodotto sul mercato, attraverso una fitta collaborazione con la rete commerciale del brand. L’esperienza presso la Gianni Versace invece è stata più legata al mondo del glamour e delle sfilate, ugualmente importante in un ambito diverso. Where do you get the inspiration for every new collection?

Every collection has a cultural background, that derives from my own background of study. Often, inspiration, come to me through modern or contemporary artists: with a method that I like to define as philological, I try to decipher the aesthetical codes of the artist and to re-propose them with my stylistic language.

If you had to define, in a few words, your style, what would you focus the stage light on?

Feminine, light, intense and fluid, and I like to think, sophisticated.

How important is choice of the materials to the creative process of your collections?

Fundamental, from the moment I start working with shape and volume. A correct fabric combined with an architecture that supports it, lets me achieve 100% of the objective.

What do you hope to find in the next fairs of the sector regarding fabrics for the S/S 2010?

I like garments that have an elaborate model construction. Therefore I look for fabrics that support such construction without making them heavy and that valorize the natural feminine shapes.

What are the leitmotifs for next winter?

It will be a minimalist collection, with particular combinations of blue and black and black and brown. Inspiration comes from a show at the Victoria & Albert Museum of the artist Sian Bowen, from which a text has been extracted with the title of Gaze’. I try therefore, to reproduce the minimalism of his works through my interpretation.

Previews for the S/S 2010?

Its too early... stampe. E’ stato con Amuleti J che ho finalmente avuto la possibilità di avere una panoramica a 360° di questo settore.

Da dove nasce l’ispirazione per ogni nuova collezione?

Ogni collezione ha un impianto culturale, che deriva probabilmente dal mio background di studi. Spesso l’ispirazione mi viene da artisti moderni o contemporanei: con un metodo che mi piace definire filologico, cerco di decifrare i codici estetici dell’artista e di riproporli con il mio linguaggio stilistico.

Se dovesse riassumere in poche battute il suo stile su cosa punterebbe i riflettori?

Femminile, leggero, inteso come fluido, e mi piace pensare sofisticato.

Quanto peso ha la scelta dei tessuti nel processo creativo della sua linea?

Fondamentale, dal momento che lavoro molto sulla forma e sui volumi. Un tessuto corretto abbinato a una architettura che lo supporti mi permette di raggiungere il 100% dell’obiettivo.

Cosa spera di trovare nelle prossime fiere di settore per quanto riguarda i tessuti della p/e 2010?

A me piacciono i capi che abbiano delle costruzioni elaborate di modello. Cerco quindi tessuti che supportano tale costruzione senza appesantirla e che valorizzino le forme naturali del corpo femminile.

Quali saranno i leitmotiv per il prossimo inverno?

Sarà una collezione minimalista, con particolari abbinamenti di blu e nero e nero e marrone. L’ispirazione nasce da una mostra al Victoria&Albert Museum dell’artista Sian Bowen, da cui è stato tratto anche un testo dal titolo Gaze’. Cerco quindi di riprodurre il minimalismo dei suoi lavori attraverso la mia interpretazione Anticipazioni per la collezione p/e 2010?

The process of developing museums of clothing and accessories in countries like France, England and the United States started long before it did in this country. But also in Italy there are historic – and beautiful – institutions which have contributed to the process of raising the status of particular garments to works of art. There are a number of such institutions in Tuscany, mainly in Florence.

The Antico Setificio Fiorentino was born in the mid seventeenth century, when some of the aristocratic families of the city decided to create a workshop where looms, patterns and fabric designs would be housed in one place rather than in their respective palaces. Today, ten weavers work in this precious workshop and pass down the traditions of the art, working on eighteenth and nineteenth century looms, some of which are unique. The historical archive cannot be visited, but in the sales room, the visitor can buy fabrics such as l’ermisino, a particular type of Renaissance taffettà, saia fiorentina or filaticcio, a simple, heavy Tuscan fabric made from silk and linen or pure silk, unique in Italy. Among their clients, architects and famous interior designers as well as private clients like members of the European Royalty and the big international families (Via Bartolini 4, tel. 055. 213861, www.setificiofiorentino.it). The Fondazione Arte della Seta Lisio was born in 1971, the idea of the daughter of Giuseppe Lisio, founder of one of the most well-known manufacterers of hand-woven silks. The structure aims at keeping alive the ancient techniques of hand weaving silk and contains one of the most important archives of over 350 antique silk fabrics. This important institution is famous also for its educational activities and for its library. (via B. Fortini 143, tel 055.6801340, www.fondazionelisio.org). Another important place is Palazzo Pitti, in which the Costume Gallery represents the only museum of the history of fashion in Italy, one of the most important internationally.. In the suggestive frame of the Villa Bardini, the Museo della Fondazione Roberto Capucci are conserved the works and techniques of Roberto Capucci. After the success of the inaugural show in 2007, since last October, the Fondation has put on a show illustrating the research and analysis of form created by the master between the years 1950-1995. Inside the ex-factory of Campolmi,a jewel of industrial architecture of the XIX century, the Museo del Tessuto di Prato, The Prato Textile Museum documents the textile world, from the paleo-Christian era to the modern day. In March 2009 the Museum inaugurated a new layout of the contemporary section, dedicated to environmentally friendly textiles, fibres and garments, all made from renewable resources. The exhibition of Indian techniques is a further exploration of the current exhibition of traditional fabrics from countries outside the European Union. Last January the book La Fondazione Cerratelli.

Technicians, young Tecnici, giovani professionisti crescono professionals grow Theirs is a profession with its roots in the history of textiles. The job of a technician is, in fact, one which characterizes every company producing or finishing yarns and textiles: “ask the technician” is a phrase which echoes round the walls of the Prato, Biella, Como workshops or anywhere in Italy that textiles and yarns are worked. This is because the technician is a bit like the factotum of the company, he is involved in every aspect, he knows everybody and is the most important person next to the director’s offices.

Now this professional figure has undergone a radical change, theoretical training is more focused and specific, the responsibilities are no longer limited to within the four walls of the company, but are now frequently outside the company, once upon a time a taboo area for the technician.

Two “new generation” technicians with very different backgrounds, confirm this tendency. Stefano Ballerini is a technician, son of a technician, but he and his father have very little in common regarding their roles at work: “Now we get asked also to be involved in the commercial side – he says – whereas before, the technician stayed within the company, following the production cycle, now he works with subcontractors, checks and records the hours of the workers and has to even be involved in the costs of the processes and the administrative accounts.

“The first request I received was to take on the role of technician-accountant - confirms Godi, graduated from “Buzzi” in Prato –and now the technician’s role is much more extensive, he talks to the stylists, is involved in the development of new products, has constant dealings with clients. But for now, I don’t yet see the entrepreneurs developing an approach to improve and develop this new professional figure”.

La loro è una professione che affonda le radici nella storia stessa del tessile. Quello del tecnico è infatti un lavoro che da sempre caratterizza la produzione di ogni singola azienda che produce filati e tessuti o rifinisce i prodotti: "chiedilo al tecnico" è una delle frasi che per decenni hanno riecheggiato negli stanzioni di Prato, Biella, Como o di qualsiasi distretto tessile italiano. Questo perchè il tecnico di una volta era un po' il factotum dell'azienda, si occupava di tutto, conosceva tutti e alla fine era anche l'ultima persona da interpellare prima di arrivare direttamente nell'ufficio dell'imprenditore.

Adesso la figura professionale è radicalmente cambiata, la formazione scolastica è più mirata, i compiti sono più limitati tra le quattro mura dell'azienda ma aumentano all'esterno, un voltà spazio tabù.

A confermare questa tendenza sono due tecnici, Francesco Godi e Stefano Ballerini, entrambi della "new generation" ma con un backstage diverso. Stefano Ballerini è infatti un tecnico figlio di un tecnico, eppure con il padre ha pochi punti in comune: "Adesso ci viene chiesto di fare il commerciale - dice mentre prima il tecnico restava in azienda, seguiva tutto il ciclo produttivo, gestiva i rapporti con i contoterzisti, controllava e segnava le ore lavorate dai dipendenti e addirittura si occupava delle tariffe delle lavorazioni e della contabilità amministrativa.

"Quella di fare il tecnico-commerciale è stata la prima richiesta che ho ricevuto - conferma Godi, diplomato al "Buzzi" di Prato - e adesso il tecnico lavora con un'accezione più ampia del termine, va in giro dagli stilisti, segue i prodotti nuovi, ha rapporti continui con la clientela. Ma per ora non vedo negli imprenditori la mentalità per far funzionare al meglio questa nuova figura professionale". fabrics world 37

A fact which characterizes this new reality in which technicians work, is the calendar of the fairs and collections which, in recent years, have been earlier and less regular than in the past.

“The consequences of these changes in deadlines - explains Ballerini – also involve the differences between clients. Those who want longer term deadlines, turn to China or other low cost markets. Those who need rapid delivery, research and quality, stay with the Italians. However, the average delivery times do not exceed five weeks”.

“We respect the times the clients want - says Godi, who works for a company whose point of reference is high level, ready-to-wear – so that the calendar of the fairs interests us only relatively. The salons, more than anything, provide the timing.”.

“Also to compare, benchmark and keep up to date with the production of our competitors - admits Ballerini - because Milan and Paris are important places where we can judge and evaluate the collections, you meet clients and see new fabrics and textiles made by others.

Maybe the salons have lost something from a commercial point of view, because the business aspects have taken place before, but they are still not to be missed, neither by us technicians”.

A caratterizzare la nuova realtà dei tecnici sono anche le date di fiere e collezioni, da qualche anno anticipate e comunque meno regolari rispetto al passato.

"Le conseguenze del cambiamento della tempistica - spiega Ballerini - sono anche la divisione della clientela. Chi vuole prodotti con scadenze lunghe si rivolge alla Cina o agli altri mercati dalle tariffe più basse. Chi invece vuole rapidità, ricerca e qualità rimane legato a noi italiani. D'altronde ormai i tempi medi di consegna non superano le cinque settimane".

"Noi seguiamo i tempi chiesti dai clienti - dice Godi, che lavora per un'azienda che ha come riferimento il pronto-moda di alto livello - quindi i calendari delle fiere ci interessano relativamente. Ormai i saloni servono per più che altro per darsi un timing".

"Ed anche per confrontarsi e seguire i prodotti dei concorrenti - ammette Ballerini - perchè Milano e Parigi sono pur sempre punti di incontro importanti dove si tirano le somme delle collezioni, si incontrano clienti e si vedono i tessuti altrui. Forse i saloni hanno perso qualcosa dal punto di vista commerciale, perchè gli affari si fanno in anticipo, ma rimangono un appuntamento da non mancare, anche da parte di noi tecnici". fabrics world 39

To talk about fashion with Dan Beranger is like consulting a thermometer under his arm and a crystal ball revealing images of the future.

Disenchanted expert regarding the practical mechanisms of fashion, he is also an enthusiastic explorer of new markets where the culture, the costumes, the habits of the people and the daily life are of the first importance, even before the economic aspects, and are the aspects which first capture his attention. A creative volcano, with an uneven, variegated curriculum like the laws of fashion when experienced from behind the camera. Stylist, consultant, art director, trend setter and, for some months each year, also designer.

We met him the day after the inauguration of the first monobrand Hybris boutique in Paris where Dan Beranger, already style director of the label since it first appeared in 2002, has been entirely responsible for the concept.

75 sq. metres at 79 rue Vieille du Temple, that is to say, at the new crossroads of Paris fashion, conceived as the inside of a tin, entirely covered with untreated zinc. Grey is the dominant colour in this space created to give a sense of freedom, and not suffocate the content, a total look, made in Italy, created for the woman of today, the lover of versatile and top designer styles.

Mr Beranger what does Italian fashion need to do to be competitive in the future?

Rediscover the value of craftsmanship for a start. The know how and professional approach of top craftsmen who work with leather, textiles and knitted products, regrettably an ever smaller number, but who are present throughout the fashion world, in all sectors, and will, in a few years, become one of our greatest treasures. If well matched, naturally, with creativity which must be increasingly pure, intelligent and of the highest possible quality.

Parlare di moda con Dan Beranger è come consultare un termometro sotto al braccio del presente e una buona palla di vetro che fluttua sul futuro.

Disincantato conoscitore dei meccanismi pratici della moda è anche un appassionato esploratore dei nuovi mercati, dove a interessarlo sono la cultura, i costumi, le abitudini, la quotidianità prima ancora del potenziale economico. Un creativo vulcanico, dal curriculum irregolare e screziato come lo sono le leggi della moda quando viene vissuta da dentro la sala macchine. Stilista, consulente, art director, trend setter e da qualche anno anche designer.

Lo abbiamo incontrato all’indomani della recente inaugurazione della prima boutique monomarca Hybris a Parigi di cui Dan Beranger, già direttore stile del marchio fin dalla prima uscita nel 2002, ha interamente curato il concept.

75 mq al 79 di rue Vieille du Temple, cioè nel nuovo crocevia della moda parigina, concepiti come l’interno di una scatola interamente ricoperta di zinco non trattato. Domina il grigio in questo spazio creato apposta per non soffocare il suo contenuto: un total look tutto made in Italy, pensato per una donna moderna, amante di uno stile versatile, ad alto contenuto di design.

Signor Beranger cosa dovrà fare la moda italiana per essere competitiva in futuro?

Riscoprire il valore dell’artigianalità, per prima cosa. La perizia di alcuni, e purtroppo sempre minori, bravissimi artigiani della pelle, del tessuto, della maglieria, figure infinite che in Italia costellano ancora tutta la filiera della moda fino ad arrivare al pezzo finito, diventerà, fra pochi anni, uno dei beni più preziosi.

Se ben combinata, naturalmente, con la creatività che dovrà essere sempre più pura, intelligente e più alta possibile.

Alto artigianato, dunque, per quale motivo?

Ma perché il pubblico che compra prodotti di moda si è spaccato su due fronti: i più acquistano già regolarmente prodotti a bassissimo costo, ma una fascia

Top craftsmanship therefore, why?

Because the people who buy fashion products are divided into two groups, the much larger group buy very low cost goods, but a small section are beginning to demand top quality, often unique pieces, or anyway products which vibrate and stand out because of how lovely they are and how brilliantly made. Italy cannot be competitive on the mass market, but it is the only one which knows how to handle products individually, the Italian craftsman has innate taste, the ability to find, each time, the right technical solutions and offer that flexibility which is required by top craftsmanship..

For sometime, you have embarked on a multi-domiciled venture: always active in the world of fashion – the work with Hybris and with the bureau de style Nelly Rodi – but also in the design sector...

Everything began a few years ago when I was commissioned to re-style the concept studio of the Nomade Hotel, which was inaugurated two years ago in its new image in the heart of Istanbul. Now I am involved in another experience with another hotel, a restaurant, a wine bar and a Spa in Casablanca, in Morocco. They are small hotels, where I have been careful to avoid disagreeable tendencies to reproduce the continental stereotype which is impersonal and makes you feel, wherever you are, always in a no-man’s land. Western comfort and functionality are intrinsic in my projects together with a sensitivity for local decorative traditions, colours, materials and architectural styles. In all the places in the world where I have been able to live for a period of time, I have always become passionate about the culture, the aesthetic qualities of the place, the lifestyle, the attitudes. I believe that design and fashion in this era of globalization, should pay attention to integration: a product must take into consideration the culture and history of the person who buys it. ristretta di pubblico comincia ad esigere il massimo, quasi il pezzo unico, o comunque oggetti che pulsano, vibrano da quanto sono belli e impeccabilmente realizzati. L’Italia non può essere competitiva nel mercato della grande distribuzione, ma è l’unico, grande distretto nel mondo che ha il vero saper fare nelle mani, che a loro volta sono ben collegate a un gusto innato, alla capacità di trovare, di volta in volta, le soluzioni tecniche adeguate, a quel tipo di flessibilità che è necessaria all’alto artigianato.

Lei da un po’ di tempo ha iniziato l’avventura del pluridomicilio: sempre attivo nel mondo della moda – la collaborazione con Hybris e con il bureau de style Nelly Rodi - ma anche nel settore del design...

Tutto è cominciato alcuni anni fa quando mi fu commissionato il restyling e lo studio del concept del Nomade Hotel, che è stato inaugurato nella sua nuova veste due anni fa nel cuore di Istanbul. E adesso ripeto questa esperienza con un altro hotel, un ristorante, un wine bar e una Spa a Casablanca, in Marocco.

Sono hotel di piccole dimensioni, dove ho avuto cura di evitare la sgradevole omologazione allo stereotipo continentale che azzera ogni emozione e ti fa sentire, ovunque tu sia, sempre in un non-luogo. Comfort e funzionalità occidentale si fondono nei miei progetti alla sensibilità per le tipicità decorative, cromatiche, materiche e architettoniche locali. In ogni luogo del mondo dove ho avuto modo di vivere per qualche tempo mi sono sempre appassionato alla sua cultura, alla sua estetica, al suo stile di vita, al suo punto di vista. Credo che il design e la moda in questa epoca di globalizzazione dovrebbero maneggiare con cura il fattore integrazione: un prodotto non può non tener conto della storia di chi lo acquisterà. fabrics world 47

So design, after all these years of fashion, represents your next channel of expression?

It seems to me that fashion is past its peak. OK, it will continue to be a really important phenomena, but it will be more limited when compared to ten or twenty years ago. In this sector, everything has become very unstable and fast changing, whereas interior design and décor have taken off in the middle classes in the last ten years. Design is becoming more the norm, also for the higher middle classes all over the world, not only in the west, as a solid long term investment Also here, I repeat, Italy has an exclusive potential of excellent craftsmen who support and develop the work of designers and creators, and are indispensable, professional figures. I hope that Italians will soon realize the importance of these people and their potential. You need to promote the high professional levels of your manufacturing and production.

You had close relationships with many of the emerging markets long before they boomed economically, can you tell us which, now, is a country or a city we should keep an eye on?

Istanbul, without doubt. It is magic. It is a crossroads between present and past, between western and eastern cultures.

And it is in a period of ferment Sarà il design, dopo tanta moda, il suo prossimo canale espressivo privilegiato?

Mi sembra che la moda abbia già oltrepassato il momento del suo apice massimo. Sì, continuerà ad essere un fenomeno di costume importante, ma assumerà dimensioni più contenute rispetto a dieci, venti anni fa. In questo settore tutto è diventato ormai più mutevole e instabile. Il design, l’interior design e il cosiddetto décor invece hanno iniziato il loro ciclo vitale, intendo a livello diffuso di middle class, proprio in questo decennio. Noto che il design si sta affermando, anche per le classi medio-alte del mondo, e non solo in Occidente, come un bene più solido della moda e più duraturo. Anche in questo ambito, torno a ripeterlo, l’Italia vanta un potenziale esclusivo di bravi esecutori, artigiani che sostengono e accompagnano il lavoro dei creativi, diventando praticamente figure indispensabili.

Mi auguro che voi italiani prendiate coscienza di questo al più presto. Dovete tornare a rivalutare l’alta professionalità manifatturiera.

Lei che ha stretto rapporti con molti degli attuali mercati emergenti ben prima del loro boom economico, può indicarci adesso un paese o una città che un creativo dovrebbe tenere d’occhio?

Istanbul, senza dubbio. E’ magica. E’ un crocevia temporale di passato, presente e futuro, è un crocevia culturale di pensiero orientale e occidentale.

E ora è in pieno fermento.

Spring-summer 0: Milan and Paris fullstop and paragraph. While on the catwalk, the models display the articles we will be wearing next winter, the two most important textile fairs reset the calendar and take a lucid and innovative look at the trends that follow. Beyond the crisis, well-constructed mechanisms begin to move. From the 3rd to the 6th of February, Milano Unica, which brings together the traditional Italian textile fairs of Ideabiella, Ideacomo, Moda In, Prato Expo and Shirt Avenue at the Fieramilanocity showground.

Haut du gamme textiles and research products for mens and womenswear, formal and informal, offer a complete panorama of the future textile production and constitute a solid base of made in Italy of the fashion sector. Another thermometer which gauges the temperature of world markets is Premiere Vision Pluriel, from the 10th to the 13th of February. A complex system which unites like segments of the market: Premiere Vision for textile production, Expofil, dedicated to yarns, Mod’Amont, for accessories and decoration, le Cuir, for leather, and Indigo, designs for patterned fabrics. The numbers, in this case, are more eloquent than any number of words: 700 participants from 28 countries and over 50,000 visitors, are numbers which record a constant reality. We asked Angelo Uslenghi and Pascaline Willhelm, creative directors respectively of Milano Unica and Premiere Vision, to give us a preview of the tendencies we will see at the fairs. And to comment on this particular economic period which we are now experiencing.

On a chromatic level, can you identify one or two dominant leitmotif ?

Spring summer bursts upon us with light and joy, exceptional and very much alive. A symbiosis of materials and colours, textiles and views, feel and music. Both for women and men, the importance of the fabrics flirts with discretion to reveal subtle tactile and visual sensations.

Lightness allies with consistency, a modest transparency elaborated with a structured superimposition, concentrating on creating an almost immaterial feel of opacity. The fineness of the linen combines with fluidity, the dryness of crêpe becomes more lively. The 3D reliefs and patterns play with the monochrome and in a light ton sur ton, The clarity of the dyes softens every attempt to shock. The season provokes, but without violence and leaves space to other humours and vagaries, making the frontier between styles and materials more permeable. The weight of cotton and linen are surprising, due to their generous softness, elasticity is used to gently underline the shapes. The cottons and the richer silky fabrics make the commonplace extraordinary. The surfaces flow in magnificent movements and the deorations acquire a strong graphic candour. La primavera estate innesca, con luminosità e gioia, una eccezionale e viva simbiosi tra materiale e colori, tessuto e visivo, tocco e musica. Sia per la donna che per l’uomo, la nobiltà dei tessuti flirta con la discrezione per dei piaceri tattili e visivi più sottili. La leggerezza si allea alla consistenza, si munisce della pudica trasparenza elaborata in sovrapposizione strutturate, si concentra su un’opacità dalle mani quasi immateriali. La finezza dei lini si associa alla fluidità, la secchezza dei crêpe diventa gentilmente piccante. I rilievi 3D ed i disegni si divertono con la monocromia o in leggeri ton sur ton. La chiarezza delle tinte ammorbidisce ogni tentativo di urto. La stagione provoca senza violenza e lascia spazio all’umore e all’irragionevolezza, rende permeabile le frontiere tra gli stili ed i materiali. La pesantezza dei cotoni e dei lini stupisce per la morbidezza generosa, usa l’elasticità per sottolineare le linee con gentilezza. I cotoni o i tessuti serici più ricchi rendono il quotidiano straordinario. Le superfici fremono in movimenti magnifici e i decori acquistano una forte franchezza grafica. I procedimenti rispettosi dell’ambiente e dell’uomo sono privilegiati, i riciclaggi perseguiti con determinazione. I colori si abbinano in opposizioni pacifiche, spiritose e ludiche. Both from a historical point of view and a more technological and futuristic point of view, in fashion, it seems that people themselves are returning to take a central position. Wellness and beauty are linked in the research for fabrics with a high aesthetic level, but also a high level of comfort and care for the environment. Do you agree with this interpretation?

In a continually changing and developing fashion environment and in the world as it is today, Première Vision opens new lines of development which allow producers and buyers to find the winning card to stand out from the others. For the last few seasons, personalization is an aspect which textile producers at Première Vision have concentrated on. Their research allies industry and personalization, the ability to reproduce the identical product on request but leave a mark on the complex world of fashion, using that sense of savoir-faire and creative genius. To protect people with fabrics is an ancient art and contemporary technology has made for spectacular progress in comfort and protection. Today wellness and beauty are intimately linked: protecting people and the planet is an invitable consequence. Da diverse stagioni la personalizzazione è un lavoro che i tessitori di Première Vision esercitano con virtuosismo. Le loro ricerche per alleare l’industria all’ineguagliabile, il riproducibile alle richieste particolari, lasciano il segno in un universo moda complesso, attingendo al loro savoir-faire e al genio della creazione.

Proteggere l’uomo con il tessuto è un ruolo ancestrale del tessile e le tecnologie contemporanee hanno permesso dei progressi spettacolari nel comfort e nella protezione. For this season, spring summer 2010, the valid procedures regarding eco-responsible development, are always more direct and give rise to original products which become a part of fashion, with the strength of aesthetics and wellness.

Economic crisis and tendency: fashion trends are the translation of those phenomena which occur worldwide in the most varied fields. How much does the current financial crisis influence research into trends?

Fashion often provides a reflection of the future. It is an emotion, poetry, image, appearance, hard work. Fashion is ephemeral and eternal.

Fashion takes on the different faces of the worldliness of the men and women who make it, who dream about it, conceive it, invent , create, industrialize, distribute and live it.. Fashion contains the essence of man, which fluctuates according to the era and the situation, flowing between protection, extravagance, recession, ostentation, discretion, exageration, nobility, foolishness, purity or eccess. . So it knows how to adapt cheerfully and with intuition to new recipes, relations and organizations to invent. This spring summer 2010 constitutes, above all, a new point of departure for Première Vision, which is investing in a new salon for a better future. rispetto del lavoro dell’uomo. La moda è spesso un riflesso precursore. E’ emozione, poesia, immagine, apparenza, industria. La moda è effimera ed eterna. La moda assume le sfaccettature della la globalità degli uomini e delle donne che la fanno, la sognano, la concepiscono, l’inventano, la creano, l’industrializzano, la distribuiscono, la vivono. Porta con sè l’essenza dell’uomo che oscilla, a secondo delle epoche e delle congiunture, tra la protezione, la stravaganza, il recesso, l’ostentazione, la discrezione, l’esagerazione, la nobiltà, la follia, la purezza o l’eccesso. Per questo saprà adattarsi con brio e intuizione alle nuove ricette, relazioni ed organizzazioni da inventare. Questa primavera estate 2010 soprattutto costituisce un nuovo punto di partenza per Première Vision, che investirà sul salone per un futuro migliore.

What are the most evident characteristics of the materials for menswear and womenswear for the next s/s 2010 regarding the fabrics and the finishes?

The principal characteristics of the materials for S/S 2010 must be looked for in two leitmotiv which, together, represent the philosophy of the season, a Minimalism Plus and a Maximalism Minus. In general, we are talking about a considerable use of silk filaments and natural, vegetable fibres with an essential contribution of high-tech fibres and finishing. After a season of fabrics with a super clean, impeccable look, it is important to record the presence of a new vintage look, light and sophisticated on rich, elaborate, complicated backgrounds. Next to the traditional fluid feel, (typical of the summer season) there is also a crisp, almost starched, look, which is ideal to give volume, a sculptured effect, on garments which are a bit “pret-a-couture”.

Prints and jacquard merge and overlap in a fantastic mix &match. Very visible is “bio”, with natural materials such as cotton, linen, hemp, bamboo, jute and raw silk. There is also extreme, ethereal lightness created by the use of man-made filaments.

On a chromatic level, can you identify one or two dominant leitmotiv?

I think that the dominant chromatic groups will be given by neutral tones like rope, sand, eggshell, khaki next to a series of “almost” white tones. And then sherbert colours, the vivacious ethnic and tribal tones. Above all, brown, in all its variations: African, orange tinged, rust, bronzed. And of course, black and white.

Quali sono le caratteristiche più evidenti dei tessuti uomo e donna per la prossima s/s 2010 per quanto riguarda superfici e materiali?

Le caratteristiche principali presenti nei tessuti per la P/E 2010 vanno ricercate nei due leitmotiv che rappresentano insieme la filosofia della stagione: un Minimalismo Plus ed un Massimalismo Minus. In generale si parla di un uso considerevole di filamenti serici e di fibre naturali vegetali con il contributo essenziale di fibre e finissaggi high-tech. Dopo stagioni di materiali con effetti puliti e impeccabili, è importante registrare la presenza di un nuovo vintage, leggero e sofisticato su basi ricche, elaborate, complesse. Accanto alla tradizionale mano fluida (tipica della stagione estiva) si inserisce una presenza sostanziale di mano croccante, quasi inamidata che ben si presta a dare volume, effetto scultura, su capi un pò “pret-a-couture”. Per stampe e jacquard, motivi fusi e sovrapposti in un fantasioso mix &match. In evidenza il bio, con materiali organici come cotone, lino, canapa, bambù, juta e seta cruda. Troviamo anche leggerezze estreme, eteree con filamenti di prodotti man-made.

A livello cromatico può individuare uno o due leitmotiv dominanti?

Penso che i gruppi cromatici dominanti saranno dati dalle tonalità neutre come corda, sabbia, guscio d’uova, kaki accanto a tutta la serie dei “quasi” bianchi. E poi i colori sorbetto, le tinte vivaci etniche e tribali. Il marrone soprattutto, sarà declinato in tante variazioni: africano, aranciato, ruggine, brunito. Immancabile il bianco/nero.

In the current fashion systems, taking into consideration the difficulties of this economic period, is it still more important and useful to talk about trends and tendency?

For a number of seasons, Moda In has also concentrated on providing more information about products. Companies want a service that can help them identify the most important trends for the next season, to use and interpret according to their own particular speciality. If the fashion world demands something new every six months, someone has to do a lot of research and present the results to the producers, without giving in to the fear, that in difficult times is very strong, that they are not really on the same wavelength as the market.

Fashion is, today, very diversified. What is the role of the tendency section in Fashion in such a complex scene?

Regarding what has just been said, the job of research into current tendencies is always more complex and articulated. We have to carefully evaluate and be responsible for the product information we give, particularly for totally new products. One thing is for sure: the complex panorama of fashion always offers innovation, even in difficult times because of the economic situation.

You just have to know how to seize the opportunity. In identifying tendencies, it is important to keep in mind that four or five directional themes seen from the point of view of the companies are perceived as ten or maybe twelve.

Nel sistema moda attuale, considerando anche le difficoltà del momento economico che stiamo attraversando, è ancora significativo ed utile agli addetti ai lavori parlare di tendenze moda?

E’ da diverse stagioni che Moda In non parla solo di tendenze moda ma affianca sempre più l’espressione informazioni di prodotto. Alle aziende interessa avere un servizio che li possa aiutare a trovare i filoni merceologici più importanti della stagione successiva, da coniugare e interpretare a secondo della loro specialità. Se il sistema moda richiede novità ogni sei mesi comunque qualcuno dovrà ricercarle e presentarle ai produttori, senza cedere al timore, che nei momenti difficili è più forte, di non avere prodotti in sintonia col mercato.

La filiera moda è oggi fortemente diversificata. Qual è il ruolo della sezione tendenze di Moda in uno scenario così complesso?

Per quanto detto sopra, il compito di chi ricerca le correnti direzionali delle tendenze diventa sempre più complesso e articolato. Occorre valutare attentamente e prendersi le proprie responsabilità nel proporre quelle informazioni di prodotto che rappresentano veramente le novità. Un dato è certo: il complesso panorama moda offre sempre spunti innovativi, anche nei momenti difficili per la congiuntura economica. Occorre solo saperli cogliere. Nell’elaborare le tendenze, inoltre, bisogna tener presente che quattro, cinque temi direzionali sono percepiti dalle aziende; dieci, dodici forse non proprio.
