text Federica Repetto How did your passion for glass begin?

I moved toward the world of glass a few years ago, when I moved to Venice. To learn to love glass you need to know about it, learn about its thousand alchemies, study its history, learn about the art of glass from the great masters and also relate well to skilled artisans, impiraresse and perlere.

Your creations also suggest design.

Design is also part of my professional vision, my life, and for me, it’s synonymous with space and harmony of volumes.

Your works are unique and precious.

My lamps are unique because I produce them using elements made by the great glass designers. They are pieces of art and sculpture with mutating colors that speak of light.

Do you believe that the future of design is the quest for materials?

Design’s future certainly does not depend on the choice of materials but a deep sense of harmony, style and elegance, that perfect mix that combines the ancient and the modern.

An artist or designer who inspires you?

Venini, because he has intelligently revolutionized the conceptual world of glass.

Why visit Murano?

Only here can one perceive that energy that is born of fire and glass, a passage of Light, a precious gift for all of us.

Com’è nata la sua passione per il vetro?

Mi sono avvicinata al mondo del vetro qualche anno fa, quando mi sono trasferita a Venezia. Per appassionarsi del vetro bisogna conoscerlo, apprendere le sue mille alchimie, studiarne la storia, conoscere l’arte dai grandi maestri del vetro e rapportarsi anche con abili artigiani, impiraresse e perlere.

Le sue creazioni profumano anche di design.

Anche il design fa parte della mia visione professionale, della mia vita, ed è per me sinonimo di spazio e di armonia dei volumi.

I suoi lavori sono unici e pregiati.

Le mie lampade sono uniche perché le produco con elementi realizzati dai grandi designer del vetro. Sono pezzi d’arte e delle sculture dai mutevoli colori che parlano di luce.

Ritiene che il futuro del design sia la ricerca dei materiali?

Sicuramente il suo futuro non dipende dalla scelta del materiale ma da un profondo senso di armonia, stile ed eleganza, quel perfetto mix che sa unire ciò che è antico con il moderno.

Un artista o un designer a cui si inspira?

Venini, perché ha sapientemente rivoluzionato il mondo concettuale del vetro.

Perché visitare Murano? È solo qui che si percepisce quell’energia che nasce dal fuoco e dal vetro, un passaggio di Luce, un dono prezioso per tutti noi.

text Federica Repetto When did you first become passionate about your profession?

At the age of 14, I first set foot behind what was the most high-profile bar in my town and had my first bartending experience, as trainee, complete with white jacket and bow-tie. Two years later I got my first job as commis at the Hotel Romazzino on the Costa Smeralda.

Who has most inspired you?

My first real mentor was an amazing Austrian Head Barman, Peter Hofler. In London, I worked as ‘second in command’ for the then UKBG President, Roger Metcalf, an experience that enabled me to subsequently get hired as Head Barman at the Capital Hotel in Knightsbridge, where I had the privilege of serving, among others, Charlie Chaplin, Bing Crosby, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Rod Stewart.

What does being a bartender mean?

I consider myself as a host rather than bartender. What I love most about this profession is providing hospitality, not just mixing and creating cocktails, but making my guests feel at home.

What are your favorite cocktails to make?

The great classics, Martini, Negroni, Boulevardier, Old Fashioned...

What do you love most about Venice?

I love the history and the culture of this magnificent city, guests who arrive from far and wide, constantly enriching my spirit. For this reason I never feel the need to globetrot around the world – the world itself revolves around Venice!

Giorgio Fadda, who has held various important positions as bartender, is currently Bar Manager of The Westin Europa & Regina, in Venice. In 2018 his Martini Cocktail was awarded the prize as the best in Italy by the BlueBlazeR App Quando ha iniziato ad appassionarsi del mestiere di barman?

A 14 anni sono salita per la prima volta sulla pedana di quello che era il bar più importante della mia città ed inizia la mia prima esperienza, come apprendista, in giacchetta bianca e papillon. Due anni dopo ho ottenuto il primo incarico come commis all’Hotel Romazzino in Costa Smeralda.

Chi sono stati i suoi maestri?

Il mio primo vero maestro è stato un incredibile capo barman austriaco: Peter Hofler. Cosa ama di più di Venezia?

Di questa magnifica città amo la sua storia, la sua cultura, i clienti che arrivano da lontano e che mi arricchiscono continuamente. È per questo che non sento il bisogno di girare il mondo: è il mondo che gira intorno a Venezia!

text Sabrina Bozzoni Entrepreneur and multifaceted artist, when did you realize that you could make art a job?

At an early age, in fact, I still have my first paintbox. I don’t consider my activity a job, but a way to keep a diary of an adventurous life.

Your first encounter with art.

When I was eighteen, with my friend Alborghetti, the painter, I opened the “L’abside” art gallery in Chiari, Brescia. We spent afternoons and evenings in the studios of the artists, falling in love with their activity which then became mine. One thing, however, was clear to me: that I would have become an artist, but not like those in fairy tales.

Portraits of famous people? Who would you like to paint the portrait of?

After the portraits of the last three Popes, Obama, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Grace Kelly, various Nobel Prize winners. Perhaps Donald Trump, just to understand who he really is.

Beauty is …?

A flower in bloom, a dawn, a sunset, entering the soul of a sensitive person, walking in winter at night through the streets shrouded in fog.

Quando ha capito che avrebbe potuto fare dell’arte un lavoro?

Fin da piccolo, conservo ancora la prima cassetta di colori. La mia attività non la considero un lavoro, ma un modo per tenere un diario di una vita avventurosa.

Il suo primo incontro con l’arte.

A diciotto anni con l’amico pittore Alborghetti aprii la galleria d’arte “L’abside” a Chiari, Brescia. Abbiamo trascorso pomeriggi e serate negli studi degli artisti, innamorandomi della loro attività che poi è diventata la mia. Una cosa però mi era ben chiara: avrei fatto l’artista, ma non quello delle favole; mi sono prima realizzato economicamente e in seguito dedicato anima e corpo alla pittura.

Ritratti di personaggi famosi? Chi vorresti ritrarre ancora?

Dopo i ritratti degli ultimi tre Papi, di Obama, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Grace Kelly, vari Premi Nobel, trovo difficile individuare un personaggio. Forse Donald Trump, per comprendere chi è veramente.

Bellezza è?

Un fiore che sboccia, un’alba, un tramonto, entrare nell’anima di una persona sensibile, camminare in inverno di notte per le calli invase dalla nebbia.

Tre opere artistiche da vedere assolutamente a Venezia.

San Marco, la Basilica dei Frari e la Scuola Grande di San Rocco.

Un sogno non ancora realizzato.

Devo essere sincero: non ne ho. Sono soddisfatto di come ho vissuto, degli obiettivi raggiunti e di quanto mi è stato donato.

text Federica Repetto How does it feel getting a Michelin star at such a young age?

Receiving a star at the age of 29 is something that’s hard to explain. When I heard the news I was pleasantly surprised and so were the rest of my team – who I’ll never cease to thank. I still feel as if I’m living in dream, a state of amazing excitement; yet at the same time I’m aware that our journey is far from over and objectives far from being met.

Who have your greatest teachers been?

On my quest I’ve come across many great chefs, but two of them have left an indelible impression on me: Enrico Crippa and Paolo Lopriore. I’d like to stress, however, that we are still at the beginning of a long, fantastic journey.

What’s your mantra in the kitchen?

It can be summed up in a single action, the ‘gesture’, that metaphysical means of communication that the Japanese masters consider as a ‘technique of connecting with multiple planes of being’.

So why go to Glam?

Coming to Glam is nothing short of experiencing a Big Bang, a universe that is created and explodes in an instant.

If Venice were a dish?

Come si ci sente ad aver conquistato una stella Michelin in così giovane età?

Ricevere la stella a 29 anni è difficile da spiegare. Quando ho appreso la notizia sono rimasto piacevolmente sorpreso ed è stato così anche per tutto il mio team che non smetterò mai di ringraziare. Mi sembra ancora di vivere in un sogno, una realtà fatta di straordinarie emozioni; allo stesso tempo ho la consapevolezza che il cammino e gli obiettivi sono tutt’altro che raggiunti.

Chi sono i suoi grandi maestri?

Nel mio percorso lavorativo ho incontrato molti grandi Chef, sono però due ad avermi lasciato una personale ‘impronta’: Enrico Crippa e Paolo Lopriore. Ci tengo ad aggiungere che siamo, però, all’inizio di un lungo e fantastico percorso.

Il suo mantra in cucina? È racchiuso in un’unica azione, il ‘gesto’, quella comunicazione metafisica che i maestri giapponesi considerano come una ‘tecnica di collegamento con piani molteplici dell’essere’.

Perché venire al Glam?

Venire al Glam è vivere un Big Bang, un universo che si crea ed esplode in un solo attimo.

Se Venezia fosse un piatto?

Venezia… ohhhh Venezia, un piatto difficile e complesso, composto da ingredienti esclusivi: mistero, eleganza, unicità, sensualità, allegria e gargantuesca.

Palazzo Contarini Corfù dagli Scrigni aa “Everything I see and do assumes meaning in a mental space where the same calm reigns as here, the same penumbra, the same silence streaked by the rustling of leaves. At the moment when I concentrate and reflect, I find myself again, always, in this garden”, wrote Italo Calvino in the Invisible Cities.

Hidden behind high walls, Venetian gardens are labyrinths intersected by water, sometimes unknown, sometimes inaccessible and, in other cases, they require a great spirit of exploration to be discovered. Francesco Sansovino, in the 16th century, reviewed: 39 gardens in the San Marco district, 49 in Castello, 40 in Cannaregio, 29 in San Polo, 50 in Santa Croce and 29 in Dorsoduro, in addition to the vegetable gardens and gardens on the islands.

Some of the public parks still found in Venice date back to the 19th century. Such is the case of the Papadopoli Gardens, designed in the 1800s by stage designer Francesco Bagnara and enriched by landscape gardener Marc Guignon, which stretched over an area of 12 thousand square meters. Once filled with rare exotic plants, the gardens now welcome those arriving from Piazzale Roma. A rare example of Roman-style architecture is found not far from here. The two wings of Ca’ Zenobio, the historic building which houses the Armenian College named after Moorat Raphael and the neoclassical library designed by Tommaso Temanza, enclose a garden that appears in a 1703 veduta

“Ogni cosa che vedo e faccio prende senso in uno spazio della mente dove regna la stessa calma di qui, la stessa penombra, lo stesso silenzio percorso da fruscii di foglie. Nel momento in cui mi concentro e rifletto mi ritrovo sempre in questo giardino”, scrive Italo Calvino nelle Città invisibili.

Nascosti da alte mura i giardini veneziani sono labirinti intersecati dall’acqua, a volte sconosciuti, altre volte non accessibili e in altri casi richiedono grande spirito di esplorazione per essere scoperti. Francesco Sansovino, nel XVI secolo, recensì: 39 giardini per il sestiere di San Marco, 49 per quello di Castello, 40 per Cannaregio, 29 per San Polo, 50 per Santa Croce e 29 per Dorsoduro, oltre agli orti e giardini delle isole. Risalgono al XX secolo alcuni parchi pubblici tuttora esistenti, è il caso dei Giardini Papadopoli, progettati nell’Ottocento dallo scenografo Francesco Bagnara e arricchiti dal paesaggista Marc Guignon, che coprivano un’area di 12mila metri quadri. Noti, un tempo, per la presenza di rare piante esotiche, oggi aprono di fatto le porte alla città a coloro che arrivano da piazzale Roma. Un raro esempio di architettura alla romana si trova poco distante. Le due ali di Ca’ Zenobio, già Collegio Armeno dedicato a Moorat Raphael, vi fa da contro altare la biblioteca neoclassica progettata da Tommaso Temanza, si protendono verso il giardino che Luca Carlevarijs in una stampa del 1703 mostra disegnato a motivi floreali, quasi fosse un pavimento in marmi policromi. Oggi un cancello separa il giardino dal cortile, qui nel XIX secolo è sorta una doppia collinetta con funzione di

Palazzo Cavalli Franchetti as ice-house. The garden was restored to its original splendor by landscape designer Tudy Sammartini and is now filled with arches of sweet-smelling roses framing the flower-beds.

Campo San Barnaba leads to Ca’ Rezzonico The Eighteenth-Century Venice Museum and its garden (the admission to the garden is free). The sun-heated garden benches welcome exhausted visitors and low ornamental hedges separate the green lawns dotted with busts, sculptures and marble emblems.

A pond with fish and turtles “cheers the children up, while a cascade of wisteria flowers pours down from the pergola, sweetening the air with its unmistakable scent and the bell tower of San Barnaba watches over the green space from above, aided by four marble statues placed at the entrance”.

Now just bask in the beauty of the view from the Meravege bridge, from which one can admire the odd tower of Palazzo Contarini Corfù dagli Scrigni, a historic building owned by the Rocca family since the mid-1800s. This corner of paradise, which was once frequented by poet Gabriele D’Annunzio who was a regular visitor of the house to contemplate the beauty of Lady Moceniga Mocenigo Rocca and Lady Annina Morosini, is visitable today only by appointment with the owners and accessible through the canal walkway over Rio di San Trovaso. A magnificent wisteria, an ancient pomegranate tree and four statues representing Merope, Momus, Tantalus and Atlas watch over this enchanted garden.

Another interesting green space in Venice is the garden of Palazzo Cavalli Franchetti, designed in the 1800s by Giovanni Bat-

Proseguendo verso campo San Barnaba si accede a Ca’ Rezzonico Museo del Settecento Veneziano e al suo giardino (l’ingresso in questo angolo di verde è gratuito per chiunque si trovasse nei paraggi). Le panchine sono scaldate dal sole per accogliere stanchi visitatori, mentre le basse siepi dividono i prati punteggiati di busti, sculture ed emblemi in marmo. Una fontana con pesci e tartarughe “rallegra i bambini mentre una cascata di glicine scivola da un pergolato addolcendo l’aria con il suo profumo ed il campanile di San Barnaba sorveglia dall’alto lo spazio verde, aiutato dagli sguardi di quattro statue in marmo poste all’ingresso”. Lasciatevi ora conquistare dalla bellezza che si intravede dal ponte delle Meravege dal quale si può ammirare la curiosa torretta annessa al Palazzo Contarini Corfù dagli Scrigni, che dalla seconda metà dell’Ottocento appartiene alla nobile famiglia Rocca. Questo piccolo paradiso, un tempo frequentato anche dal poeta Gabriele D’Annunzio, che vi si recava per contemplare la bellezza delle nobildonne Moceniga Mocenigo Rocca e Annina Morosini, è visitabile solo previ accordi con la proprietà, e vi si può accedere tramite l’esclusiva fondamenta sul rio di San Trovaso. Ca’ Zenobio tista Meduna, enlarged by Camillo Boito and restored by Istituto Veneto di Scienze Lettere e Arti, affording a magnificent view of the Grand Canal. The gardens in Venice that are absolutely not to be missed are located just behind Piazza San Marco: the Royal Gardens commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte, which cover an area of 5,500 square meters and include a neoclassical pavilion. The gardens will be reopened to the public next year following major restoration works curated by Venice Gardens Foundation Onlus.

The Castello Gardens represent the largest green space downtown Venice: an area of 65 thousand square meters, two-thirds of which are currently occupied by the Biennale, filled with hundreds of plant species and monumental trees. The gardens were originally planted with a great number of plane-trees, palms, catalpas, acacias, fruit trees, magnolias, lime trees, box hedges, myrtle and flowers of all species, amidst eighteenth-century statues and an elegant sixteenth-century arch which marked the entrance to the Chapel of Sant’Antonio and to memorials such as the Partigiana Veneta.

Located on the Island of Sant’Elena is the Pineta di Sant’Elena, a lush pine forest planted mostly with trees and lined with avenues and cut through by trails.

Worth visiting is also the Carlo Scarpa Garden at the Querini Stampalia Foundation, in Campo Santa Maria Formosa, where one can get lost amidst artificial Japanese-style streams, Byzantine-like mosaics, papyruses evocative of ancient Egypt and the lions of San Marco reminding us that we are still in Venice.

Assolutamente da vedere sono, dietro piazza San Marco, i Giardini Reali voluti da Napoleone Bonaparte, 5.500 metri quadri di parco e un padiglione neoclassico, che saranno riaperti al pubblico il prossimo anno grazie a un attento restauro a cura di Venice Gardens Foundation Onlus.

Sono i Giardini di Castello a costituire invece la parte green più estesa del centro storico: 65mila metri quadrati, oggi occupati per circa due terzi dalla Biennale, con centinaia di specie vegetali ed esemplari arborei monumentali.

Un tempo furono piantati grandi quantità di platani, palme, catalpe, palme, acacie, alberi da frutto, magnolie, tigli, bossi, mortelle e fiori di ogni specie, tra statue settecentesche, un elegante arco del Cinquecento che segnava l’accesso alla cappella di Sant’Antonio e monumenti commemorativi come la Partigiana veneta. All’estremità della città vive rigogliosa la Pineta di Sant’Elena, un terreno con un fitto impianto di specie quasi esclusivamente arboree, percorso da sentieri e delimitato da viali. Suggestivo e da visitare è il giardino di Carlo Scarpa alla Fondazione Querini Stampalia, in campo Santa Maria Formosa, dove perdersi con la fantasia tra fiumiciattoli artificiali che hanno il gusto di un giardino giapponese, mosaici che richiamano Bisanzio, papiri a suggerire l’atmosfera dell’Antico Egitto e i leoni di San Marco a riportare l’immaginazione in patria.

Exclusive meeting in the Venetian Lagoon with a living legend of American cinema, Robert Redford Incontro esclusivo in Laguna con un mito vivente del cinema statunitense, Robert Redford They look like two teenagers. Nothing, on their faces or on their bodies, reveals the toughest spot to cover, the one they don’t have: fear. Robert Redford is in Venice, at the Film Festival, to present the film he played in co-starring Jane Fonda, Our Souls at Night, directed by Ritesh Batra. In the film, Robert and Jane are next-door neighbors who, despite their age, uncertainties and fears, grow close to each other, even physically close.

Robert Redford is the handsome and honest face of the most democratic American dream. He was the journalist who, alongside Dustin Hoffman, brought down the presidency of Nixon in All the President’s Men; but he was also a Casanova billionaire in Indecent Proposal. He starred in countless films. He is also an environmental activist and the founder of the Sundance Festival: the film festival devoted to independent filmmaking and young and talented film directors, such as Damien Chazelle, the director of La La Land. When we met with him for the interview, he was wearing a grey linen jacket over a cotton T-shirt. A casual chic look, his signature style.

Mr. Redford, what is at the root of this film?

I simply wanted to work with Jane one more time. We worked together in Barefoot in the Park fifty years ago, in The Chase, and in The Electric Horseman in more recent times. Well, I wanted to end on a high note.

In Barefoot in the Park, the two of you played newly-weds very much in love but very different: she was dynamic, passionate, romantic, he was serious-minded, composed, cautious. Is there any resemblance between them and the characters of Our Souls at Night? And how much are you really like them?

Yes, there were and still are some resemblances. Jane is a truly lively and passionate, impulsive, direct and enthusiastic person, whereas I’m a more reserved, perhaps even more suspicious type. In both films, it’s the woman, that is, the character played

by Jane, who chooses for both of them. She is the one who

Mr. Redford, cosa c’è all’origine di questo film?

Un desiderio molto semplice: volevo fare un altro film con Jane. Insieme avevamo interpretato A piedi nudi nel parco, cinquant’anni fa, La caccia e Il cavaliere elettrico, un po’ più di recente. Beh, volevo chiudere in bellezza.

A piedi nudi nel parco vi mostrava come giovani sposi innamorati ma molto diversi: lei vitale, appassionata, romantica, lui serio, contegnoso, prudente. Ci sono delle somiglianze con questo ultimo film? E con voi, per come siete veramente?

Sì, c’erano alcune somiglianze allora e ci sono ancora oggi.

Jane è veramente vitale e appassionata, impulsiva, spontanea, entusiasta; mentre io sono più chiuso, forse più diffidente. In tutti e due i film, è la donna, cioè il personaggio interpretato da Jane, che si incarica di scegliere per tutti e due. È la donna Venezia | made in Veneto 49

And I believe that the same happened in my life: women are always more willing to take risks, reveal their true feelings, make decisions.

What has changed between the two of you, in your relationship?

Not much: my hearing deteriorated a bit, so if Jane tells me something displeasing, I can’t hear her!

Is there an age for love, after which one can’t fall in love anymore?

No, there isn’t. It’s never late for love, no matter how old you are.

Was it awkward to shoot the sex scenes?

Well, they’re not really sex scenes. Anyway, I would have preferred not to shoot the scenes in which the erotic tension builds up, because I feel uncomfortable. But I liked the idea of two eighty-year-olds who still enjoy making love. And I felt that it was only right to show this desire on the screen. After all, the skin may not be as fresh as it used to be, but there are other things that count more.

What is your environmental activism based on?

On the simple idea that we have but one planet to call home and we are destroying it in the name of profit. We have to prevent climati c disasters and avoid poisoning the earth any further.

With the Sundance Festival, you have contributed to promoting young, talented and independent film directors. You reinvested your prestige in a showcase for talented artists.

When you have been lucky enough to be as successful as I am, it’s easier to give back. I wanted to make the voice of other actors and film directors heard. I started, basically from scratch, a festival which is a meeting place, where film directors can discuss their work with colleagues and exchange ideas. That is what makes the Sundance different from other film festivals.

How do you deal with the passing of the years?

When I was a young man, I was completely untroubled by it: I never thought I would grow old one day. I was very athletic, I felt light. Then you start realizing that you have to move carefully and give up doing things that came natural when you were young. You have to inevitably deal with a number of limitations, which is quite sad. You have to come to terms with the idea that you’re entering a whole new life phase. On the other hand, as someone before me said: “Growing old sucks, but it’s better than the alternative!”

che ha la forza di rischiare, di mostrare i sentimenti. E in fondo penso che mi sia accaduto questo anche nella vita: le donne hanno più capacità di rischiare, di mostrare i loro sentimenti, di compiere scelte decise.

Che cosa è cambiato fra voi, nel vostro rapporto?

Non molto: solo che sono diventato un po’ sordo, e se Jane mi dice qualcosa di sgradevole solitamente non la sento!

C’è un’età per l’amore, dopo la quale non ci si può più innamorare?

No. Nella vita non è mai troppo tardi per l’amore. È stato difficile girare le scene più erotiche?

Beh, non sono vere e proprie scene di sesso. Comunque, anche quelle in cui c’è una forte tensione erotica, non avrei voluto girarle, sono molto pudico. Ma mi sembrava bello che i due protagonisti, a ottant’anni, avessero ancora voglia di fare l’amore. E mi sembrava giusto rappresentare questa loro voglia.

In fondo, anche se la pelle non è più fresca come una volta, ci sono tante altre cose che contano.

Il suo impegno ecologista è molto forte. Da cosa nasce?

Semplicemente dal pensiero che abbiamo un unico pianeta sul quale vivere e che lo stiamo rovinando in nome del profitto. Dobbiamo evitare il disastro climatico, dobbiamo evitare di avvelenare la terra più di quanto abbiamo già fatto.

Il suo lavoro con il Sundance festival ha valorizzato molti registi giovani, originali, bravi. Ha reinvestito il suo prestigio creando una vetrina per nuovi talenti.

Quando hai la fortuna di ottenere un certo successo, come è capitato a me, puoi decidere più facilmente di fare qualcosa per gli altri. Io volevo dare voce ad altri attori e altri registi. Ho creato, praticamente dal nulla, un festival che è un luogo di incontro, in cui i registi possono discutere dei loro lavori con altri colleghi, dove si scambiano idee. In questo, il Sundance è un festival un po’ diverso dagli altri.

Come vive il passare del tempo?

Quando ero giovane non ci pensavo per niente: non pensavo che un giorno sarei invecchiato. Ero molto atletico, mi sentivo leggero. Poi ti rendi conto che devi cominciare a stare attento quando ti muovi, e che devi rinunciare a fare delle cose a cui non pensavi neppure, quando eri giovane. C’è una serie di limitazioni inevitabili e in una certa misura è triste. Bisogna imparare a gestire questa nuova fase della vita. D’altra parte, come diceva qualcuno, invecchiare è brutto ma l’alternativa è peggiore!

Blessed with a sunny disposition and typical Venetian verve, she grew up near the warmth of her beloved family, but above all, close to that of the furnaces of Murano where her father, Ulderico Moretti, worked, continuing that activity of master glassmaker which had been handed down, over the years, through the entire Moretti dynasty. A Murano family saga beginning in the mid-nineteenth century with the rediscovery by Vincenzo Moretti of the process - forgotten for centuries – for making murrino glass, and that today, thanks to Giusy Moretti, takes on the form of an elegant ‘Grand Foulard’ ( 120 cm x 120 cm).

The love for glass that has always accompanied the life of this Venetian artist begins like a fairy tale: “Once upon a time, there was a box full of small, brightly-colored round pieces of glass, given to a little girl, who made her up own fairy tale with them: they became flowers, animals, faces of characters from a different time.”

That child was Giusy, who with those glass ‘toys’ later set together with gold, platinum and precious stones, would go on to create authentic ‘glass fairy tales’ to be worn, and which today’s great museums (including the New York Met) host as examples of particular rarity and beauty.

Giusy Moretti, who lives near Venice with her memories of Murano, has felt the need to “write” the history of murrino glass on silk. In the weave of this shimmering headscarf, the faces of the various masters of the past belonging to the family and the images immortalized in their famous jewels: from those of famous historical figures (Christopher Columbus, Garibaldi, King Vittorio Emanuele II, King Umberto I, Pope Leo XIII, Emperor Francis Joseph I) to the cockerels of 1926, which her father, Ulderico Moretti, realized when the municipality of Murano was merged with that of Venice, losing its territorial identity.

A fact that psychologically affected the Muranese population so strongly as to suggest to Vincenzo Moretti the murrino-glass reproduction of the cockerel, formerly the municipal symbol of Murano: the cockerel, in fact, is also present as a murrina jewel in Giusy’s collection.

Giusy Moretti’s ‘Grand Foulard’ will be presented at various museum sites and with special events. Sale price? For now, still not disclosed.

Solare, dotata di verve di impronta tutta veneziana, cresciuta vicino al calore di una famiglia adorata ma soprattutto delle fornaci di Murano dove il padre, Ulderico Moretti, lavorava continuando quell’attività di maestro vetraio che era stata di tutta la dinastia Moretti. Una saga muranese che ha inizio nella metà dell’Ottocento, con la riscoperta da parte di Vincenzo Moretti della lavorazione - dimenticata da secoli - del vetro-murrina, e che oggi, grazie a Giusy Moretti, prende la forma di un elegante grand foulard (120 centimetri per lato).

L’amore per il vetro che accompagna la vita dell’artista veneziana comincia come una favola: “In principio fu una scatola con dei piccoli vetri rotondi molto colorati regalati a una bambina, che ne fece la sua personale di fiabe: erano fiori, animali, volti di personaggi d’epoca”. Quella bambina era lei, che con quei ‘giocattoli’ di vetro, poi assemblati a oro, platino e pietre preziose, avrebbe creato autentiche ‘fiabe di vetro’ da indossare, che oggi i grandi musei (tra i quali il Met di New York) ospitano come esemplari di particolare rarità e bellezza.

Giusy Moretti, che vive nel Veneziano con i suoi ricordi muranesi, ha sentito il bisogno di scrivere su seta la storia del vetro-murrina.

Nella trama di questo scintillante foulard, i volti dei vari maestri che si sono succeduti nella famiglia e le immagini immortalate nei famosi gioielli: da quelle dei personaggi della storia (Cristoforo Colombo, Garibaldi, Vittorio Emanuele II, Umberto I, Papa Leone XIII, Francesco Giuseppe) ai galletti del 1926, che suo padre, Ulderico Moretti, realizzò quando il comune di Murano venne accorpato a quello di Venezia, perdendo la sua identità territoriale.

Un fatto che incise psicologicamente sulla popolazione muranese tanto da suggerire a Vincenzo Moretti la riproduzione in murrina del simbolo comunale di Murano cancellato: il galletto, appunto, presente come gioiello-murrina anche nella collezione di Giusy.

Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara bring generosity to Venice Biennale di Architettura. Yvonne Farrell e Shelley McNamara portano a Venezia il tema della generosità Freespace is the title of the 16th Biennale Architettura, in the Giardini and Arsenale, as well as throughout the centre of Venice, until November 28, offering a reflection on the spirit of generosity inherent in architecture. The exhibition is curated by the Irish architects Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara, founders of the studio Grafton Architects and famous in Italy for having designed the headquarters of Bocconi University in Milan and for winning the Silver Lion at the 2012 Biennale. For the Dublin-based duo, their inspiration comes from nature, like the light of the sun, air and the force of gravity, and their proposal is an attempt to consider the architectural space as a place dedicated to the balance between the individual and the surrounding environment: free space, where one can express themselves and reconnect with nature and the urban landscape. The projects presented by the 65 participating countries, including first-time entries Antigua & Barbuda, Saudi Arabia, Guatemala, Lebanon, Pakistan and the Holy See (with its own pavilion on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore), revolve around this concept. ITALIAN PAVILION It’s the Italy of small cities and villages that Arcipelago Italia recounts in this project curated by Bologna-based Mario Cucinella for the Italian Pavilion at the Tese delle Vergini, Arsenale. One of the top architects in Europe and an expert on eco-friendly architecture and co-design, Cucinella presents an Italy comprised of places rich in history and different cultures. Protagonists of the projects presented by the exhibition are five places in need of an architectural intervention: Gibellina, Camerino, Ottana, the Casentino Forest and Matera.

Freespace è il titolo della 16ma Biennale di Architettura che, fino al 28 novembre, si svolge ai Giardini e all’Arsenale, oltre che nel centro di Venezia. Una riflessione sullo spirito di generosità insito nell’architettura firmata da due architette irlandesi Yvonne Farrell e Shelley McNamara fondatrici dello studio Grafton Architects, famose in Italia per aver progettato la sede dell’Università Bocconi a Milano e Leone d’Argento alla Biennale del 2012. Motivo di ispirazione, per il duo basato a Dublino, sono i doni della natura come la luce del sole, l’aria o la forza di gravità e la loro proposta è il tentativo di considerare lo spazio architettonico come luogo dedicato all’equilibrio tra l’individuo e l’ambiente circostante: spazio libero in cui esprimersi e riconnettersi con la natura o il paesaggio urbano.

Ruotano intorno a questo concetto i progetti presentati dai 65 Paesi partecipanti, di cui sei new entries: Antigua & Barbuda, Arabia Saudita, Guatemala, Libano, Pakistan, e Santa Sede (con un proprio padiglione sull’Isola di San Giorgio Maggiore). Tra questi e gli eventi collaterali presenti, ecco cosa non perdere.

PADIGLIONE ITALIA È l›Italia delle piccole città e dei borghi quella raccontata da Arcipelago Italia, progetto curato dal bolognese Mario Cucinella, per il Padiglione Italia, alle Tese delle Vergini, Arsenale. Tra i maggiori architetti del panorama europeo, esperto di architettura sostenibile e di progettazione partecipata, Cucinella racconta un’Italia fatta di luoghi densi di storia e di culture differenti.

signed by the Dutch architect and artist Constant Nieuwenhuys (1920-2005) – the pavilion examines the theme of automation in work and the classic distinctions between work and free time. The exhibition, curated by Marina Otero Verzier, an architect based in Rotterdam, explores the repercussions of new technology in our professional lives. At the Giardini in the Arsenale.

HOLY SEE PAVILION One of the most anticipated of this year’s Biennale, Vatican Chapels is the brainchild of Francesco dal Co, who were inspired by the chapel built in 1920 by celebrated architect Gunnar Asplund for Skogskyrkogården, a cemetery in Stockholm, to be “a place of reference, meeting, mediation and greeting”. The project is an example of architectural generosity that blends with the theme of the Biennale, presenting an exhibition itinerary comprising 10 chapels by 10 architects who were invited to reflect on the role of the chapel in contemporary society. The architecture evokes the lexicon of traditional, Scandinavian wooden buildings, Stavkirken, reinterpreting their volumes, styles and typical materials. The pavilion is located on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore.

DANISH PAVILION Dedicated to sustainable development. The main project, Blox, by the studio headed by Rem Koolhas, was recently opened at the port in Copenhagen: an example of free space dedicated to citizens, open to the public and which offers activities, workshops and opportunities for encounters and exchanges. CHINESE PAVILION Devoured by the ferocious industrialization characterizing re-

Freespace, Sketch section for Bocconi Universitta Luigi Bocconi, Milan, 2008 Grafton Architects Grafton Architects cent decades, the Chinese countryside is once again becoming the focus of architects and artists for their potential in offering an alternative way of life. This is the inspiration for the reflection presented in the exhibition curated by Li Xiangning, an overview of the projects that have combined modernization with a respect for rural traditions, from the expansive Loess Plateau to the water towns south of the Yangtze and the thriving plain in the north-east of the country. SPECIAL PROJECTS Two special projects enrich this year’s edition: the first, curated by Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara, revolves around an installation at Forte Marghera designed by architects Sami Rintala and Dagur Eggertsson; the second comes from a collaboration between the Biennale and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London: the Special Project at the Pavilion of Applied Arts, inside the Sala d’Armi in the Arsenale. Curated by Olivia and Christopher Turner, the project examines the future of social housing, with the example of the housing estate Robin Hood Gardens in East London, designed by Alison and Peter Smithson in 1972.

Art exhibitions that look to the future without forgetting the past Rassegne d’arte che guardano al futuro senza dimenticare il passato

The vitality of women like Marguerite (known as Peggy) Guggenheim is the kind that leaves a mark, as clear as if left by a blade of Toledo steel. Her explosive exposition (hosted by the Greek Pavilion at the 24th Venice Biennale) 70 years ago, in an Italy still reeling from memories of the war but ready to open itself up to economic recovery, to the boom and all that it would bring with it, was therefore the perfect opportunity to rethink what such vitality meant for the Lagoon city and for art in the Belpaese. Dedicated to the New York-born patron of the arts, and under the auspices of Gražina Subelytė, 1948: The Biennale of Peggy Guggenheim dominates the Project Rooms at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, running until November 25, recalling her words, “My exhibition had enormous resonance and my pavilion became one of the most popular at the Biennale. (…) It felt like a new European country.” Documents, photographs, letters and a reconstruction of the original set-up are at the heart of the exhibition, thanks to which visitors can admire some of the works displayed at that long-ago Biennale, which signalled the acceptance of avant-garde and works by the American patron’s compatriots.

The two locations of the Pinault Collection, which last year co-hosted the Damien Hirst monographic exhibition Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable, once again tell two different stories; Palazzo Grassi presents the first major exhibition dedicated to one of the main figures in contemporary painting, the German-born and Swiss-adopted Albert Oelhen, with his Cows by the Water, while Punta della Dogana is hosting Dancing with Myself, a collective exhibition that was previously staged (albeit less extensively) in Essen in 2006 and organized as a reflection on the representation of the artist’s self and his/her role as the subject and object of the work.

La vitalità di donne come Marguerite (detta Peggy) Guggenheim è di quelle che lasciano un segno, nitido come se tracciato con una lama di Toledo. La sua dirompente esposizione (ospite del Padiglione Greco durante la XXIV Biennale di Venezia) settant’anni fa, in un’Italia ancora esitante sulla memoria della guerra ma pronta ad aprirsi alla ripresa economica, al boom e a tutto quello che avrebbero portato, è dunque l’occasione per ripensare a ciò che significò per la città lagunare e per l’arte del Belpaese. Dedicata alla mecenate newyorkese, e sotto l’egida di Gražina Subelytė, 1948: la Biennale di Peggy Guggenheim domina lo spazio delle Project Rooms della Peggy Guggenheim Collection fino al 25 novembre, ricordando come scrisse: “La mia mostra ebbe una risonanza enorme e il mio padiglione divenne uno dei più popolari della Biennale. (…) Mi sembrava di essere un nuovo paese europeo.” Documenti, fotografie, lettere e la ricostruzione dell’allestimento originario sono il cuore della rassegna, grazie alla quale sarà possibile ammirare alcune delle opere allora esposte che significarono l’apertura alle avanguardie e alle opere dei connazionali della mecenate statunitense.

Hidden in a maze of streets and canals, just steps away from Campo Manin, in the district of San Marco, is an architectural gem without equal. It is the fifteenth-century Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo, best-known for its ‘bizarre and graceful’ external spiral staircase commissioned by Pietro Contarini, a scion of the noble and influential Contarini family of the San Paternian branch that, in the 1300s, had the privilege of giving a Doge, Andrea Contarini, to the Republic of Venice. The Contarini del Bovolo Staircase, designed in the shape of a “snail shell” which is called “bovolo” in Venetian dialect, is an architectural icon that ended up lending its name to both the building and the family who owned it. An architectural whim and a perfect blend of different styles: Renaissance (because of the use of some elements such as capitals), Gothic (because of the construction technique) and Veneto-Byzantine (because of the shape). Considered to be one of Venice’s hidden gems, the staircase was recently reopened to the public following major restoration works. 28 meters high and with a diameter of 4.70 meters, the structure is made of red bricks and white Istrian stone and consists of ascending rows of round-headed arches and 80 monolithic steps leading, counterclockwise, to an amazing domed belvedere affording a breathtaking view of the city’s rooftops and of the domes of San Marco, Santa Maria Nascosta in un dedalo di calli e canali, a due passi da Campo Manin, nel sestiere di San Marco, si trova un gioiello architettonico senza eguali al mondo. La Scala Contarini del Bovolo, dalla forma particolare ‘a guscio di lumaca’ che in veneziano si dice appunto “bovolo”, è più che una pregevole costruzione che finì per dare il nome non solo all’intero edificio ma anche alla famiglia che lo fece commissionare. Un capriccio architettonico e perfetta sintesi di stili diversi: rinascimentale (per l’utilizzo di alcuni elementi come i capitelli), gotico (per la tecnica costruttiva) e veneto-bizantino (per la forma). Considerata una delle perle nascoste della città lagunare, ha riaperto di recente al pubblico, a seguito di un lungo restauro.

Alta 28 metri, con un diametro di 4.7, si compone cromaticamente nel rosso del cotto e nel bianco della pietra d’Istria, è formata da logge e archi in tutta la sua altezza, e gli 80 gradini monolitici, che si salgono in senso antiorario, e che conducono ad un incredibile belvedere a cupola che offre una vista meravigliosa sui tetti della città, San Marco, Salute e Santi Giovanni e 78 Venezia | made in Veneto

An amazing domed belvedere affording a breathtaking view of the city’s rooftops (ph. Gioielli Nascosti di Venezia) della Salute and Santi Giovanni e Paolo. (In 1859, astronomer Wilhelm Tempel, who discovered Comet C/1859 G1 and the Merope nebula in the Pleiades, made his first astronomical observations from the belvedere by using a telescope). The arches and columns running the entire length of the staircase make it absolutely unique of its kind. The structure is an unusual and impressive blend of different architectural styles, expressive of the Renaissance taste for modularity and yet extremely unconventional in its design and formal solutions.

Connected to the Bovolo Staircase is the Tintoretto Room, a prestigious exhibition space which houses one of the preliminary sketches of Il Paradiso, the extraordinary painting by Tintoretto kept at Palazzo Ducale, and works by Sansovino, Guardi and Sebastiano Ricci.

Visiting this architectural gem offers the chance to admire a treasure trove of works which are part of the historical and artistic heritage of I.R.E., Istituzioni di Ricovero e di Educazione Venezia, and get a fascinating insight into Venetian art from the 1500s to the 1700s. The Contarini del Bovolo Staircase is also one of Venice’s so-called Hidden Gems, along with another four must-see sights: Oratorio dei Crociferi, Complesso dell’Ospedaletto, Chiesa delle Zitelle and Chiesa delle Penitenti.

Gli archi e le colonne che ne percorrono tutta la lunghezza le conferiscono un aspetto speciale costituendo un unicum affascinante ed ambiguo. Collegata alla Scala del Bovolo vi è la Sala del Tintoretto, spazio espositivo di grande pregio custode di uno dei bozzetti preparatori del Paradiso di Palazzo Ducale, opera straordinaria del Tintoretto, e che custodisce anche i lavori di Sansovino, Guardi e Sebastiano Ricci.

Visitare questo complesso consente di ammirare una raccolta di opere che appartengono al patrimonio storico artistico di I.R.E., Istituzioni di Ricovero e di Educazione Venezia, e che si inseriscono in quel significativo spaccato del panorama dell’arte veneziana che risale al ‘500 e al ‘700. The paintings that form the Qohèlet diptych, the work of art by Guido Peruz which has been placed on two specular walls in the Doge’s private church at Palazzo Ducale, are an artistic and spiritual testament, a celebration of life and art over the centuries. “They were familiar with my previous works and asked me to create a piece that could be placed in the two frames which, up to the nineteenth-century, adorned two paintings by Tintoretto which are now kept at the Accademia Gallery”, the artist proudly says. Guido Peruz was born in Cadore, but is Venetian by heart, Milanese by adoption, deeply attached to his independence and since always committed to living in the name of freedom of thought. His life has been marked by the passion for art since childhood: “In summertime, our parents brought us, from the earliest age, to Lido di Venezia on vacation and, from there, we toured the whole city, through the streets of course, but also through the works of art shining with gold, in the churches, museums and then at the Art Biennales.

Venice is deeply rooted in my way of thinking and in my conception of art. What struck me as a child was the symbolic richness of gold, of its nuances, of its many uses…. which I found again in medieval Tuscan gold”.

And so, art- despite his family’s wishful thinking (they expected him to become, if not an engineer, at least an architect)- marked the years of his training in Venice and Milan, where he also worked as a teacher at the Brera Academy.

Peruz’s pursuit of a personal expressive language led him, over years of meditation and hard work, to the elaboration of a sort of theology of silence, which is perfectly expressed in his Qohèlet. This work of art, which is inspired by one of the Books of the Bible also known as Ecclesiastes, consists of seventy-two gold leaf-covered paintings, divided into two panels of thirty-six paintings each and showing the statement at the beginning of the Book: “Vanity of vanities,

Sono un testamento artistico e spirituale, un inno alla vita e all’arte attraverso i secoli, le tavole che formano il dittico di Qohèlet, l’opera di Guido Peruz che è stata collocata su due pareti speculari dell’Anti-Chiesetta del Doge a Palazzo Ducale. “Conoscevano i miei lavori e mi hanno chiesto un’opera che potesse essere inserita in quelle due cornici che fino all’Ottocento avevano ospitato due tele di Tintoretto che oggi sono alle Gallerie dell’Accademia”, spiega con pacato orgoglio questo artista schivo, cadorino di nascita e veneziano per affinità, milanese d’adozione e innamorato della propria indipendenza e da sempre impegnato a vivere nel nome della libertà di pensiero. I suoi giorni sono stati segnati dall’amore per l’arte, come ricorda: “in estate, fin da quando eravamo piccoli, i nostri genitori ci portavano al mare al Lido di Venezia e da lì partivamo per conoscere la città, attraverso le sue calli certo, ma anche attraverso i suoi capolavori che brillavano d’oro, nelle chiese, nei musei e poi alle Biennali. Venezia è entrata nella profondità del mio pensiero e del mio modo di concepire l’arte. Quello che da bambino mi colpiva era la ricchezza simbolica dell’oro, delle sue sfumature, dei suoi molteplici impieghi… che ho poi ritrovato nell’oro del Medioevo toscano”. È stato così che l’arte - nonostante le migliori intenzioni della famiglia (che non potendolo vedere ingegnere lo sperava almeno architetto) - ha segnato gli anni della sua formazione tra Venezia e Milano, dove ha anche insegnato all’Accademia di Brera. Ed è stata la ricerca di un linguaggio espressivo proprio che lo ha condotto, negli anni di meditazione e di lavoro, all’elaborazione di quella che è una sorta di teologia del silenzio nelle forme dell’essenziale, perfettamente rese nel suo Qohèlet. L’opera, che trae ispirazione dal libro biblico un tempo conosciuto come Ecclesiaste, è composta da settantadue tavole ricoperte di foglia d’oro, divise in due pannelli di trentasei per ciascuno e Venezia | made in Veneto 83

Guido Peruz all is vanity”. A celebration of the human nature’s vulnerable insubstantiality and, at the same time, a deep reflection upon the values of life.

The words written by Peruz and eternalized in gold are meant to be a subtle yet persevering incitement to the practice of reason and, at the same time, a reflection on spirituality, “religion has become an integral part of my work in the past thirty years” , he explains, and goes on: “Art is not about being provocative or provoking shock and disconcertment at all costs. In my opinion, art should teach people the use of reason, to meditate on the human condition through silence, spirituality… and gold, which evokes the sacredness of the Divine, is the perfect vehicle to achieve this goal”.

Peruz’s admiration for Fontana, “he passed away too soon to be able to work with him”, and the attention he pays to the passing of time, “my every work shows the day, month, year and hour, because it represents a moment in my life and tells my story as a man and an artist, becoming a self-portrait of its own kind”, have made his works take a shape of their own, recognizable but not rationalizable according to everyday canons: “I’m not always fully conscious of what I’m doing, because Art is a world that we embrace but not necessarily know about, it’s not an easy concept to explain and share, but it’s radical…” Just like life, perhaps. Which is why it penetrates to the depths of our souls and to their most invigorating roots.

La levità delle parole incise da Peruz, eternate dall’oro, intendono essere un’esortazione sottile ma tenace alla pratica della ragione e al contempo a una riflessione sulla spiritualità, “la religione negli ultimi trent’anni è diventata parte viva del mio lavoro” spiega, e continua: “l’arte non deve essere gridata, cercare soltanto lo choc e provocare sconcerto, a mio vedere deve insegnare a usare la ragione, a meditare sull’uomo attraverso il silenzio, la spiritualità… e l’oro, che richiama alla sacralità del divino, diventa il veicolo perfetto per raggiungere questa meta.”

L’ammirazione per Fontana, “mancato troppo presto per poter lavorare con lui”, e l’applicazione intensa allo scandirsi del tempo “ogni mia opera riporta il giorno, il mese, l’anno e l’ora, perché rappresenta un momento della mia vita e racconta la mia storia di uomo e di artista, diventando un autoritratto sui generis”, hanno fatto sì che l’arte assumesse una forma propria, rara, conoscibile anche se non razionalizzabile secondo i canoni del quotidiano: “quello che faccio non è sempre consapevole, perché l’Arte è un mondo che abbracciamo e non sempre conosciamo, è un concetto non semplice da spiegare e da condividere, ma radicale…” Forse proprio come la vita.

E forse proprio per questo capace di scendere nelle profondità dello spirito e delle sue radici più vivificanti.

Fulvio Roiter. Photographs 1948-2007 is the retrospective exhibition showing until August 26 at Casa dei Tre Oci and honoring the life and career of this great photographer and artist whose name is closely associated with the city of Venice. Primarily acclaimed as an expert in black and white photography, Roiter also used color film in his reportages, with a very personal technique that highlights places and details in every scene. Two hundred pictures are on show on the Giudecca Island, most of which vintage photos representing the extent and international span of Roiter’s work and divided into nine sections that take visitors on an uncommon and amazing tour of Venice and the Lagoon, but also to New Orleans, Belgium, Portugal, Andalusia and Brazil, in that sophisticated neo-realist style which is the distinguishing feature of all his works. The exhibition explores Fulvio Roiter’s life, which was entirely devoted to photography and to the search for the places of the soul, including extraordinary sceneries, discoveries and unconditional love. Promoted by Fondazione di Venezia, in partnership with Città di Venezia, the exhibition, curated by Denis Curti and made possible thanks to the precious contribution of his wife Lou Embo, spans over the entire artistic career of Fulvio Roiter and is the most complete monographic exhibition ever devoted to Roiter and the first held afSi intitola Fulvio Roiter. The exhibition features video showings, spectacular blow-ups and about twenty original books which, in addition to showing Roiter’s works, include critical essays by the many intellectuals who influenced his artistic career such as Andrea Zanzotto, Italo Zannier, Alberto Moravia, Ignazio Roiter, Fulvio Merlak, Gian Antonio Stella, Roberto Mutti, Giorgio Tani and Enzo Biagi.

The exhibition includes also his wife Lou’s short but touching description of their first encounter in Belgium, which marked the beginning of a forty-year-long professional and personal relationship.

The photography book has always been a vehicle for Roiter’s ideas and artwork. His full devotion to the creation of photographic publications gained him a number of important recognitions such as the prestigious Nadar Prize in 1956 for the book Umbria, Terra di San Francesco, and the Grand Prix a Les Rencontres de la Photographie d’Arles in 1978 for Essere Venezia, a publishing sensation in the field of photographic publications, for one million copies of the book have been sold since 1977 alone. Fulvio Roiter greatly contributed to the promotion of Venice’s image across the world, representing it not only as a picture-perfect city. In fact, this retrospective exhibition invites visitors to explore Venice’s most unexpected and surprising sights, revealing all its eternal grandeur.

Homo Faber, an unprecedented exhibition celebrating the best of European craftsmanship Homo Faber, la prima grande esposizione dedicata al meglio dei mestieri d’arte europei Reality has often surpassed the wildest dreams of writers, philosophers, poets and scriptwriters. What was once difficult to imagine even for the most extravagant science-fiction writers- robots, 3D printers reproducing themselves, artificial organs or, more simply, highly advanced cell phones serving as computing devices- is so much part of our life now that we can hardly imagine the world without it. Such amazing technological progress, so fast and all-reaching, brought advances in many fields and improved our everyday life in many ways. And yet, this “progress” is causing us, at times, to lose that priceless human factor which no machine can replicate.

Examples par excellence of such a truth are art and craftsmanship, the fields in which human factor and genius are visible in the both the design and construction phase. It is creativity expressed at its fullest. This is the theme of Homo Faber: Crafting a more human future, the first major cultural event devoted to European craftsmanship, held from September 14 to 30 in the magnificent spaces of the Giorgio Cini Foundation on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, one of the Venetian Lagoon’s most evocative places. Presented by the Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship with the collaboration of Fondation Bettencourt Schueller, Triennale Design Museum and Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d’Arte, this spectacular and unprecedented celebration of high craftsmanship will give visitors the opportunity to observe first-hand the skills of Europe’s greatest master artisans and their creations. The exhibition spreads over the Foundation’s libraries, cloisters and galleries: 4,000 square meters of pure creativity, from jewelry to bespoke bicycles. It brings together the oldest and newest techniques, in which

“Homo Faber is an expression that was first coined during the Renaissance and it captures and celebrates the infinite creativity of human beings- Johann Rupert, Co-founder of the Michelangelo Foundation, says. “The exhibit will provide an overview of fine European craftsmanship but it will, nevertheless, have a singular undercurrent: what human beings can do better than machines.”

The exhibition is scheduled to overlap with Venice’s acclaimed Biennale of Architecture but “we chose Venice for this exhibition not only because it is a bastion of culture and a place of unequalled beauty, -Franco Cologni, Co-founder of the Michelangelo Foundation explains- but also because Venice is today and has always been a European hub for exchange and connection.”

One of the most eagerly awaited events is the Creativity and Craftsmanship exhibition, held at the Cenacolo Palladiano, Palladio’s magnificent hall, which will play host to a series of specially-commissioned works created by pairing designers with artisans, selected by Michele De Lucchi, each one an interpretation of traditional skills through contemporary forms. But this is only a small part of a major event designed to promote and preserve a precious and priceless heritage which, as the exhibition’s title suggests, will help us build a “more human future”.

Ma questa è solo una parte di un’importante rassegna volta a promuovere e tutelare un patrimonio che non è quantificabile, tanto è prezioso, e che soprattutto, come dice esplicitamente il sottotitolo, vuole “creare un futuro più umano”.

A favorite destination of the international jet set since its opening, this luxury hotel owes much of its charm to its strategic location on Giudecca Island. As you walk around the Fondamente Nuove neighbourhood, you have the chance to come across Osteria alla Frasca, hidden in a small piazza, an authentic place that still bears the charm of its early 20th-century foundations, when it was opened as a restaurant and wine outlet. In 2012, owner Bruno Natural decided to bring the original details to the forefront, especially the “frasca,” a unique element of the locale, ideal for lunch out of the sun or a dinner protected from humidity.

The cuisine is quintessential Venetian, not only in its recipes but also in the search for ingredients and local suppliers. This small gem is easy to fall in love with…and useful for inviting love.

The restaurant is proudly tied to the concept of “natural,” from the food to the wine. Classic Venetian dishes are reinterpreted by the young chef Carlo de Paoli with particular attention on where the ingredients come from, favouring organic, and using many spices (inspiring the name), in a return to the Venice of the past, when it was an important crossroads for the spice trade. Fresh fish, for example, is cooked with citrus fruits, ginger and cinnamon, alternating between traditional soar and modern lazzo. The “bigoi” (pasta traditionally made in-house by the chef) in sauce are impeccable, just like the fried fish, a must-try.

Recalling the multi-cultural treasure that contributed to the unique and everlasting charm of the Lagoon city is Luna Sentada, whose name alone reveals its bond with Marco Polo and the merchants, sailors and fortune seekers that brought spices and treasures to Venice, making it the most cosmopolitan city of the time. Luna Sentada, boasting an Eastern flair to its furnishings, offers dishes that not only make use of the spices found in Venetian cuisine, but also mixes them with typically Mediterranean foods, for a true culinary journey in the footsteps of Marco Polo, with stops in Venice, Southeast Asia and China. The small restaurant has a wonderful outdoor seating area in Camp San Severo, overlooking a serene but picturesque canal dotted with gondoliers.

Il locale è orgogliosamente legato al concetto di “naturale”, a partire dal cibo per arrivare al vino. Le proposte del giovane chef Carlo de Paoli, infatti, rivisitano i piatti della cucina veneziana con una particolare attenzione alla provenienza degli ingredienti, preferibilmente bio, utilizzando molto le spezie (da qui il nome) un rimando al passato di Venezia come importante crocevia nel commercio delle spezie. I “bigoi” (pasta tradizionale fatta in casa dallo chef) in salsa sono impeccabili, come da tradizione è il fritto, da non perdere.

A ricordare il tesoro multiculturale che ha contribuito ad accrescere negli anni il fascino unico ed immortale della città lagunare, ci pensa anche la Luna Sentada, che già dal nome rivela il suo legame con Marco Polo e con mercanti, marinai e avventurieri di fortuna che a Venezia hanno portato spezie e tesori, rendendola la città più cosmopolita dell’epoca.
