A NOTE OF THANKS...

AFRICA SECURITY SYMPOSIUM • VIRTUAL EVENT

2

Welcome to the Post-Event Guide. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all those who participated in our first virtual Africa Security Symposium (ASEC2020), and contributed to its successes (the 7th in the ASEC series). We had the pleasure of welcoming over 400 participants to our online platform for what was a productive and engaging two days for all involved. During this challenging period, we greatly appreciate your continued support and dedication to addressing some of Africa’s biggest security challenges. At the virtual ASEC2020, we were able to replicate the feel of a live event through many of our key event features, including an Exhibition Hall, Networking Lounge and of course, 1-2-1 matchmaking meetings. Across the two days and with over 40 interactive booths, there was lots to see and do, as industry leaders showcased their solution-based products and services, ranging from telecommunications to vehicles and field equipment. Each booth displayed documents, videos and featured a chat session for anyone wishing to ask questions or hold a video call.

Across the 6th and 7th October, our online audience participated in Open Forum Chats led by a few of their fellow participants in the Networking Lounge. Day one’s discussions came from DCD Protected Mobility who focused on ‘Collective Security of the African Standby Forces’, closely followed by Woolpert’s discussion on ‘The Role of Geospatial Information for Security’. The chats garnered the attention of all online and provided an engaging interlude to the 1-2-1 meetings that took place throughout the entire event. On day two, participants were treated to 3 new discussion topics from: MINUSMA on ‘Strategic Information: a Key to Decision Making’, Blackberry on ‘Cyber Threat Hunting: Necessity or Luxury?’, and Microsoft on ‘Cloud for Defense & Security in Times of Crisis’. Each conversation explored a different area of the security landscape as matters of political support and community involvement were taken into consideration regarding sustainable action. ASEC2020 would not be complete without our revered

1-2-1 Matchmaking Meetings which aim to further collaborations and facilitate new partnerships on the continent between public and private sector leaders. Across the two days, the GRV Global team facilitated over 650 virtual meetings through video calls, in support of continued security progress. Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic in creating these new connections, the GRV Global team were glad to make these vital introductions for future alliances. A big thank you to our Conference Chair, MG Salihu Zaway Uba (Ret.), Former UNMIL Force Commander, for his unwavering support throughout the planning of ASEC2020, as well to all our panellists for being so accommodating despite their different

Participants are still able to access our virtual ASEC2020 platform until Friday 6th November 2020 and so, we urge you to take full advantage of the content and documents available at booths and within the auditorium. Although we were not able to meet in person, it was wonderful to see both old and new colleagues online, and I truly hope to have the pleasure of meeting again in 2021! With the best wishes of me and my team, stay safe and well.

THANKS FROM OUR CHAIR Invited guests and delegates,

6-7 OCTOBER 2020

After spending two interesting days viewing panel discussions and presentations, during the 1st virtual Africa Security Symposium (ASEC2020), it is with great pleasure that I wish every participant a safe farewell. It was nice to see the continuous interest of all attendees, to enhance the security situation in Africa. Whilst GRV Global organises several seminars, ASEC remains incredibly essential, especially given the fluid and engaging security situation in Africa, despite the global disruption caused by COVID-19. GRV Global has exceptionally surmounted the challenges of physical distancing by adopting their virtual platform which simulated the intimate feelings of a professional symposium setting. Overall, with the support and cooperation of every stakeholder, the symposium ran smoothly and ended on a high note.

Day 1 Opening Ceremony remarks

I must mention my deep sense of appreciation to the sponsors, participants, presenters, panellists, and all those who made this feat not only possible but also fruitful, stimulating and fulfilling. While it is impossible to summarise the two-day event in a few words, I must mention that the presenters, discussants, and moderators have done remarkably in the virtual environment. The panel discussions on policing, border control, communications, health, peace support operations, counterterrorism, financial stability, the spotlight addresses, and the forum chats, were incredibly thought provoking. I also wish to express my gratitude for Mr. Andrew Dowell, GRV Global’s CEO, and the reliable support of the AU, UN and other international organisations whom provided their dedication and support during the 1-2-1 meetings, which offered optimistic insight into the ways we can still collaborate, looking to the future. ASEC2020 emphasised that the Sahel being a semi-arid region on the fringe of Sahara, comprising of ten countries with interconnected open borders,

OVERALL, WITH THE SUPPORT AND COOPERATION OF EVERY STAKEHOLDER, THE SYMPOSIUM RAN SMOOTHLY AND ENDED ON A HIGH NOTE was the epicentre of conflict in Africa that required proactive security measures. As discussions on the fluid security in Africa took centre stage, leading organisations such as the AU, REC colleagues etc., would need to take enhanced pragmatic coordination to resolve the lingering terrorism, extremism, and other security challenges in the sub-region. Regional organisations would further need to closely collaborate with the UN and other international agencies to address the humanitarian challenges paralysing Africa.

Finally, I once again express sincere appreciation to you all for your participation and for giving me the opportunity and privilege to Chair this historic event. The experience is worthwhile, and from my assessment, the purpose was well achieved, and the two days of contributions have excelled my expectations. I hope we have all benefitted from the rich discourses and meetings associated with the virtual 2020 ASEC symposium and hope to have the pleasure of meeting with you again next year. Thank you.

The ICRC is funded mainly by voluntary donations from governments and from National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The ICRC is funded by voluntary contributions from the States party to the Geneva Conventions, Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, supranational organizations (such as the European Commission) and public and private donors. Each year the ICRC launches appeals to cover its projected costs in the field and at headquarters, plus additional appeals if needs in the field increase. We account for our work and expenditure in our Annual Report. The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is the largest humanitarian network in the world. Its mission is to alleviate human suffering, protect life and health, and uphold human dignity, especially during armed conflicts and other emergencies.
