A NOTE OF THANKS...

PHARMA LOGISTICS AFRICA • VIRTUAL EVENT

2

Welcome to the Post-Event Guide. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all those who participated in our first virtual Pharma Logistics Africa (PLA2020) and contributed to its successes (the 2nd in the PLA series). We had the pleasure of welcoming over 300 participants to our online platform for what was a productive and engaging two days for all involved. During this challenging period, we greatly appreciate your continued support and dedication to discuss Africa’s pharmaceutical and supply chain sector under the Covid-19 pandemic and beyond. At the virtual PLA2020, we were able to replicate the feel of a live event through many of our key event features, including an Exhibition Hall, Networking Lounge and of course, 1-2-1 matchmaking meetings. Across the two days and with 13 interactive booths, there was lots to see and do, as industry players from leading freight carriers and technology service providers showcased their solution-based products and services designed for the pharmaceutical industry in terms of warehousing, storage, handling, and distribution of medical supplies. Each booth displayed documents, videos and featured a chat session for anyone wishing to ask questions or hold a video call. This year’s Pharma Logistics Africa was attended by 300 participants with 180 African representatives as well as 46 Government Representatives, 25 Logistics Companies,

22 Non-Governmental Organizations, 15 Healthcare Organizations, 14 Academic & Research Institutions, 7 International Airline Companies, 8 Pharmaceutical Companies, 5 International Organizations, and 5 Multinationals Corporations. Across the 15 and 16th December, our online audience participated in Open Forum Chats led by a few of their fellow participants in the Networking Lounge. On Day 1, the open discussion was led by the German Corporation for International Cooperation GmbH (GIZ) on the need for local skills to improve Africa’s Pharmaceutical Supply Chain and Logistics industry. One participant proposed the idea of creating a local African task force sparking interest amongst participants thus revealing the need for local collaboration among key actors in the field. On Day 2, Dr. Shital Maru from School of Pharmacy, University of Nairobi opened discussion on the importance of maintaining quality and standards of pharmaceuticals during and after COVID-19 pandemic. This triggered debate on the urgency for large scale public–private partnership collaborations to achieve last mile distribution while other participants emphasized the importance of using current infrastructure instead of investing in the short-term solutions. The final open chat was led by Dr. Omar Najim, Chief Advisor and Director of Special Programme, Department

of Health, Abu Dhabi - The Hope Consortium on the readiness and challenges of cold chain solutions. PLA2020 would not be complete without our revered 1-2-1 Matchmaking Meetings which aim to further collaborations and facilitate new partnerships on the continent between public and private sector leaders. Across the two days, the GRV Global team facilitated over 200 virtual meetings through video calls, conversing about the challenges, concerns, and opportunities in terms of supply chain and logistics movement in Africa. Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic in creating these new connections, the GRV Global team were glad to make these vital introductions for future alliances.

CLINTON HEALTH ACCESS INITIATIVE

The Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) was founded in 2002 by former US President Bill Clinton and his long-term advisor Ira Magaziner, on the principle that it was unacceptable that millions of people were dying each year of HIV/AIDS in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean while treatment was readily available in wealthier countries. CHAI found the arguments made at that time that treating people with HIV in resource-poor settings was too expensive or too complicated, as completely unfounded. CHAI has since then, played a significant role in helping to save the lives of millions of HIV-infected people by lowering the cost of treatment and scaling up high-quality systems to deliver care around the world. www.clintonhealthaccess.org
