elcome to the Powering Resilience with Renewables Africa Forum (PRAF) PostEvent Report where, GRV Global would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all those who participated in this important annual event; a series promoting long-term renewable energy development across Africa through public-private partnerships (PPPs) focussed on adaptive clean energy solutions mitigating climate change. Following a very enjoyable and productive few days at the Intercontinental Ababa in Ethiopia, this report contains a detailed overview of the various workshops and plenary sessions, afternoon matchmaking meetings, and networking occasions including a large selection of photographs from the event. GRV Global would like to pass on our sincere gratitude to the various Government, International and United Nations agency officials and the developers that gave formal presentations and were committed to meeting with event delegates throughout our afternoon matchmaking meeting sessions. We are extremely grateful for their kind time and support not only during the few days in Addis Ababa but also, for their assistance during the build up to the event. GRV Global would like to express special thanks to the African Union Commission (AUC) for their unwavering assistance with helping to organise PRAF, the World Bank and IFC, the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) for partnering with us again on PRAF and also, Eversheds, who kindly fulfilled the role of Conference Chair across the few days.

The Powering Resilience with Renewables Africa Forum (PRAF) has been heralded as a significant success by both the participating officials and private-sector delegates alike; testimonials of which can be found later in this report. We welcomed over 150 local and international participants to Addis Ababa and facilitated over 400 face-to-face matchmaking meetings. As a result of this event and GRV Globalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ethos of personable engagement, longlasting collaborations are sure to result and from those collaborations, a stable base on which to build reliable and sustainable development. POWERING RESILIENCE POST-EVENT REPORT The inaugural Powering Resilience with Renewables Africa Forum, held at the Intercontinental, Addis Ababa on 1-2 September 2016, was billed as a major success. Bringing together leading renewable energy experts and technology specialists, the two days actively facilitated direct engagement – not only through high-level plenary sessions and various networking & social functions but also, through hundreds of prescheduled matchmaking meetings between public and private sector entities. Organised with the African Union Commission (AUC) and UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), Powering Resilience welcomed leading local, regional and global developers in Addis Ababa, to hear from and meet with senior African Government officials, UN, U.S., EU and international agencies, technology and service providers, NGO’s and major stakeholders involved in upcoming renewable energy projects, all focussed on furthering the continents efforts to encompass climate change into its long-term infrastructure plans.

Powering Resilience - Day One

The event’s first morning of plenary sessions welcomed an esteemed ‘Opening Ceremony’ party consisting of H.E. Dr. Elham M. A. Ibrahim, Commissioner for Infrastructure & Energy (AUC), Hon. Dr. Shiferaw Teklemariam, Minister of Ministry of Environment, Forest Development & Climate Change; Ethiopia, Andy Dowell, CEO of GRV Global (forum organiser), and Howard Barrie, Partner of Eversheds who was also fulfilling the role of Conference Chair across the two days. Our esteemed guests welcomed the international audience graciously and thanked them sincerely for taking the time to convene in Addis Ababa. They expressed their thanks to the event’s valuable sponsors and also to GRV Global, for working with the African Union Commission to bring Powering Resilience together for the first time. The Conference

Chair, Howard Barrie of Eversheds, introduced the topics to be discussed over the coming two days whilst stressing the importance of keeping addresses to time according to the programme (due to the pre-scheduled afternoon matchmaking meetings). Powering resilience was kicked off by Dr. Fatima Denton, Director of Special Initiatives Division representing the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). Dr. Denton, addressing an audience representing more than 35 countries worldwide, once again she welcome everyone to Ethiopia on behalf of UNECA and stressed the importance of renewable energy in meeting the climate change targets, especially noting the significant steps already being taken following the agreement forged at the Paris meetings (COP21) earlier this year.

Thursday 1st September would feature three themed panels namely; Panel One: PublicPrivate Partnership Models, discussing Investment, Effective collaborations, communications and growth which featured Mo El-Fatatry of Masar, Lynne Wells, Principal Associate at Eversheds & Jason Lee, Investment Officer at the International Finance Corporation; Panel Two: OffGrid/On-Grid chaired by Solarkiosk AG discussing the what, where, when and why of the different models of renewable energy projects, and the challenges facing off grid models both for residential and industrial and business applications, with enlightening presentations from Ron Margolit, Principal of Impact Financing at Lumos, and Ashenafi Girma Wondimu, Distribution, Operation and Construction Engineer at Ethiopian Electric Power; Panel Three: The scope of projects across Africa, chaired by Crispen Zana, Senior Energy Advisor at EUEIPDF, discussing mitigation, success and scalability, looking at the success of project models and considered project vulnerability in an environment of high cost competition which included addresses from Rashid Ali Abdallah, Principal Energy Officer at the AUC, Johan Van Kerrebroeck, Regional Manager East Africa at Engie, and Malte Meyer, Director Business Development of Vestas South Africa.

Following the networking lunch break, the first day of Powering Resilience then moved to the Renewable Energy Matchmaking Meetings. In the weeks leading up to the event, delegates were able to identify their preferred matchmaking meetings through GRV Global’s secure scheduling website. Pre-event, meeting schedules were finalised and confirmed to all participants in order to maximise the potential outcomes. Thursday afternoon featured hundreds of one-toone meetings with many governments/ agencies taking back-to-back meetings throughout. For many, it was the first time they experienced GRV Global’s personable format of 20-minute matchmaking meetings; participants were quick to identify their potential value and praised their efficiency.

Whilst visiting Addis Ababa, some for the first time, GRV Global wanted to ensure participants experienced the maximum possible relaxed networking opportunities. All participants were invited to enjoy cocktails and canapes at the Intercontinental Hotel main bar & restaurant. In a relaxed, casual setting, event participants enjoyed an evening of fine cuisine and refreshments. It proved an ideal opportunity for all to reflect on the day’s talking points whilst continuing the discussions they had already started during the afternoon meeting sessions.

DAY TWO REPORT Powering Resilience - Day Two

The second and final day of Powering Resilience With Renewables, Friday 2nd September, began with welcoming remarks from the event’s Conference Chair – Howard Barrie, Partner at Eversheds, who took a moment to emphasise some of the event’s highlights thus far. Panel Four: Financing Projects shared details on project finance standardisation and assessed the importance of this in protecting project IRR’s, and also looked at how competitive pricing had been achieved and what the impact has been on traditional African financing models. Panellists included Fabio Borba, Managing Director of Abraaj Group, Ina de Visser, Project Manager at Africa-EU Renewable Energy Cooperation Programme (RECP), and Sohail Barkatali, Partner, Hogan Lovells International LLP. Panel 5: Regulatory Environment, discussed management, policy, demand and impact and looked at which regulatory programmes work best for attracting investment, create bankable programs and alternative products that help plug the gaps. Chairing this panel was Chris Antonopoulos, CEO of Lekela Power, welcoming Alasdair Miller, Senior Energy Specialist at the IFC, discussing the impact of their Scaling Solar programme in Zambia, and Nathan Schmitt, COO at Shannon

Energy who discussed their own model for rolling out hundreds of MW of solar power across Africa. It was a fittingly lively debate with good Q&A at the end of the session. Following a brief Networking Tea & Coffee Break, the final panel session, the 6th, looked at New Technology Implementation. Chaired by Thinus van As, Senior Engineer/ Energy Consulting at Arup, the session looked at a variety of solutions that provide reliability, cost saving, and inspire advancement in the renewable energy space. Powering Resilience’s plenary sessions would conclude with a Closing Ceremony whereby the event’s Conference Chair, Howard Barrie of Eversheds, Hon. Dr. Shiferaw Teklemariam, Minister of Ministry of Environment, Forest Development & Climate Change; Ethiopia, Linus Morfor, Senior Energy & Climate Change Expert, African Climate Policy Centre (ACPC) of UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), and Andy Dowell, CEO of GRV Global would ultimately thank everyone for their kind commitment to this important, annual event and also to the various climate resilient challenges that lay ahead. Hon Dr. Teklemariam took the opportunity to thank all of the high-level dignitaries for their kind attendance and commitment to GRV Global’s engaging and personable format. He also emphasised again how the privatesector has a leading role to play in adapting to climate change over the many years to come and how, the Ethiopian Government are spearheading the challenges across East Africa. the AUC and UNECA for their unwavering support and collaboration on Powering Resilience With Renewables. Although the Closing Ceremony had now been held, there was still an afternoon of Renewable Energy Matchmaking Meetings to facilitate. Once again, GRV Global’s structured one-to-one meetings format was held in high regard. Powering Resilience had now seen some 500+ meetings take place between the very entities best prepared, and able, to further renewable energy and climate change adaptiveness across the continent. Undoubtedly, many meaningful contacts and collaborations had been formed in Addis Ababa this week; longlasting relationships between the public and private sector, set to aid Africa for many years to come.

DAY TWO REPORT Day 2 concluded with a field visit to the Reppie Waste-to-Energy Project in Ethiopia. The plant is designed to process and dispose 1400 tons waste per day, and upto 437,500 tons per year, which is a key project for green energy development in Ethiopia. The owner of the project is Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP). The project is being constructed by the EPC contractor- the consortium formed by Cambridge industries Ltd (CIL) and China National Electric Engineering Co. Ltd. (CNEEC) on a turnkey basis. The ownerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s engineer is Ramboll. Reppie Waste-to-Energy Project is the first waste energy facility in both Ethiopia and Africa. So it is not only a landmark project in Ethiopia but also a breakthrough of waste energy industry in Africa. This power plant will generate Thermal Energy by burning waste which can further convert to electric energy. The annual power generation will be 185 GWh. After the completion of the Reppie, it will largely reduce the negative impacts of municipal waste on ecoenvironment, lower the health hazards of environmental pollution on residents and ease the power shortage in Addis Ababa.
