Girl Scout Spirit Peyton’s Story Peyton was only eight years old when she asked a question that would change the exhibits at the National WASP WWII Museum in Sweetwater, Texas. Peyton had recently read about WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots) in school, and with an interest in aviation, she asked her grandmother if they could visit the museum. As she toured the museum, she knew something was missing. So she asked, “Are there any WASPs that look like me?” The executive director giving the tour stated that there were not any in the museum, and she was not sure if there were any at all. Three years later, Peyton’s grandmother received an email from the executive director inviting them to the 80th Anniversary Celebration of WASPs and the unveiling of a new exhibit - Celebrating 100+ Years of Black Women in Aviation. An exhibit that started with Peyton’s question. The Museum staff know the path to becoming a pilot was not easy for all women, but all women pilots deserve their story to be told. Through research, historians, and outreach, the Museum not only has a new exhibit specific to African American women, but also a Legacy exhibit honoring women pilots of all ethnicities. One simple question, asked with courage and confidence, by a young Girl Scout, changed how history is shared.
