Hey, Girl Scout! Welcome to our newly reimagined Summer Fun Guide, a canvas where you can paint your personal growth story, surrounded by the strength and warmth of our sisterhood. While our guide remains a testament to exploring new experiences and horizons, this year, we dive deeper into celebrating the unique beauty each of you embodies. At Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines (GS-NCCP), our 2024 Summer Fun Guide offers you the nourishment and support to let your true self flourish amidst a bouquet of diverse talents. We believe that in the garden of Girl Scouts, the unique beauty of every flower makes our organization strong. As you browse the chapters of this guide, you'll notice a heightened emphasis on inclusivity. In the wake of changing times, our approach has evolved, but our core remains constant: to foster a community where EVERYONE belongs. Our summer events this year will resonate with the spirit of acceptance, ensuring that everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. As always, the health and wellbeing of our members remain our foremost priority. Camps will be tailored according to the most recent safety guidelines, with the added promise of further inclusive and accessible opportunities as they materialize. Our promise to you remains the same if not stronger: to provide a space where you can bask in the love of sisterhood, embrace your authentic self, and explore the numerous possibilities that lie before you. With a rich tapestry of camp programs ranging from STEM to life skills and entrepreneurship, we empower every Girl Scout to weave their own success story, backed by a community that cheers for every milestone reached and every barrier broken. Remember, the journey with the Girl Scouts is more than just an adventure; it's a testament to the power of unity, the magic of individuality, and the joy of sisterhood. It's a chance to be a beacon of change, courage, and compassion in a world that needs it more than ever. As the dawn of this new year approaches, we eagerly extend our hands in welcome, anticipating the myriad of stories you'll pen, the challenges you'll conquer, and the memories you'll create. Here's to another year of exploring, learning, growing, and most importantly, blooming boldly.

- Yours in Girl Scouting, The Outdoor Program Team

At Girl Scouts, we prioritize the health, safety, and well-being of our members and we strive to ensure that each member’s experience is inclusive and affirming. Our events for the upcoming summer will be planned based on current health and safety protocols as guided by the Governor’s office, CDC, and other health agencies. Because this situation is continuously evolving, additional inclusive and accessibile events may be added to our Activity Calendar as they are finalized. We can’t wait to welcome you to camp this year, celebrating the diversity and strengths that each one of you brings to our community!

Frequently-Asked Questions Q: Who can attend Girl Scout camp?

Q: What type of training does camp staff receive?

A: Camp is open to all Girl Scouts and girls ages 5-17. Some programs have Entering Grade requirements or prerequisites that must be met to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all campers.

A: Before camp begins, staff attend an intensive on-site training, which includes activity programming, outdoor skills, songs, games, first aid and mental health safety, emergency procedures, communications, program age level characteristics, working through homesickness, and more.

Q: My camper is not a Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines member but would like to attend camp. Can they attend? Are there additional fees? A: Girl Scout camps are open to all campers. An additional fee of $75 for camp is applied to each session for non-GSNCCP Girl Scout Members, and for non-Girl Scout members, this fee is $100 per session. Q: Where will campers sleep? A: Campers are grouped in units. Depending on the camp and their program choice, campers may sleep in cabins, treehouses, or platform tents. Each unit has trained counselors housed in separate quarters within the living unit but close enough to supervise campers. In select sessions at each camp, counselors sleep in the same cabin as campers. Unless noted in session charts, lodging assignments will not be given prior to check-in at camp. Q: Can my camper attend camp with a buddy/friend? A: During registration, a buddy’s name can be listed. Buddies must be in the same age group and must register for the same session, and both campers will need to request each other. We are not able to honor requests for more than one buddy. Q: Who are the camp staff? A: Camp staff are enthusiastic, talented, and caring individuals. They are selected based on maturity, program experience, and genuine passion for working with campers. Camp staff are 17+ years old and all receive extensive training prior to the start of camp.

6

Q: My child has specific needs. Can they attend camp? A: Each year, many campers with specific needs participate in our camp program(s). Youth must be able to function in a 6:1 camper-to-adult ratio and must be able to shower by themselves. Specific needs may include a range of physical, medical, developmental, dietary, behavioral, or communicative abilities. It is our hope to serve all youth wishing to attend camp. Providing a safe and positive experience for all campers is paramount to us. We reserve the right to make decisions of participation based on the extent of the camper’s needs and our ability to meet those needs in the camp setting, as well as other factors deemed appropriate. Don't hesitate to get in touch with the camp director at 800-284-4475 to discuss the camp program and the nature of your camper’s needs. Q: My camper has specific dietary needs or restrictions. How are menus managed at camp? A: Menus are planned with the general camp population and economy of associated costs in mind. We will try to provide for special dietary needs within the scope of our regular menus. We cannot guarantee the complete absence of a particular allergen on camp property. Please get in touch with the camp director at 800-2844475 for more information.

Q: Can my camper call home during the week? A: Campers are not permitted to make or receive phone calls. We encourage independence and self-reliance during camp. The camp director will contact adults if a camper has a medical problem, is excessively homesick, or has an emergency. Please let your child know before camp that they will not be able to call home or bring a cell phone with them to camp and that you are comfortable with this arrangement. It is important not to send your child to camp with a cell phone. There is little coverage on our properties, and more importantly, it will send a conflicting message to other campers. We are partners with you in your child’s summer experience, and we hope that you will support us with this camp policy. Q: Can I visit my camper during a camp session? A: To help maintain program continuity and ensure the safety of campers, visitors are not allowed at camp during our summer camp sessions. Q: What happens if my camper has a difficult time adjusting to camp? A: Camp staff will do everything possible to help campers adjust to camp life. However, our camp directors reserve the right to send home any camper who consistently exhibits inappropriate behavior or endangers themselves or others. A camper’s parent/ guardian is responsible for picking them up and fees will not be refunded. Q: What measures are taken to ensure my child’s safety while at camp? A: We are dedicated to providing safe and secure camps. Each camp follows the guidelines set by the American Camp Association as well as those set by Girl Scouts of the USA through Safety Activity Checkpoints. Staff are housed in close proximity to camper cabins and tents. Camp buildings and grounds are checked nightly. All camp staff and adults spending the night at camp must successfully complete a criminal background check.

Q: If our plans change, how do I cancel my child’s session? Can I get a refund? A: Please notify our customer care team at helpdesk@ nccoastalpines.org as soon as possible if plans change and your camper can no longer attend camp. Once you register for a session, you have made a commitment to that session and are responsible for payment in full. Refunds are available under special circumstances. Please see page 21 for our refund and cancellation policy. Q: When is the last day to register for camp? A: Camp registrations will close two weeks prior to the session your camper wishes to attend. Exceptions can be made if space is available. Please contact Customer Care at helpdesk@nccoastalpines.org or 800-284-4475 for assistance if registration has closed. Q: When can I expect to receive confirmation information about Summer Camp? A: Once you have completed your registration for camp, you can log back into your My GS account and have access to the 2024 Summer Camp Confirmation by selecting the camp name on your My Events page. Confirmation packets will also be emailed to all campers registered on May 1, 2024. Q: How do I know if my camper is prepared for camp this summer? A: We want every camper to be successful at camp this summer. To help our campers have this experience we find that campers have the best experience if they can do the following: • • •

• Q: What happens when there is bad weather? A: Our outdoor activities depend on good weather to operate safely. Our staff constantly monitor the weather and give warnings when needed. In the case of bad weather, camper safety is our number one priority. Campers may be moved to a safe location and activities may be rescheduled. All camp staff are trained in best practices in safety regarding weather.

• • • •

Be fully independent with hygiene (with reminders from staff ). Use the bathroom, shower, and get dressed unassisted. Live in communal spaces. Privacy is a fundamental right of everyone at camp, including in toilets, changing areas, and showers which are single use. Sleep in a room with other people and/or fall asleep without assistance. Our cabins and tents hold multiple people; there is no situation in which a camper will have their own room. Follow verbal directions. Understand and follow camp rules and expectations. Be able to verbalize if they need assistance, are hungry, hurt, etc. Be able to reasonably and age-appropriately self-regulate social and emotional needs.

Days at Camp Mary Atkinson bring tons of adventure through activities such as boating, archery, swimming, and crafts - just to name a few! Campers rotate through activities with their lodging unit, while horse campers head to the barn for their day of riding and other activities. Depending on age and ability, campers may canoe, kayak, or paddle board on our small lake. Youth will find themselves exploring nature trails, fishing, and playing games with friends. Campers entering grade 4 and up may have a chance to climb the Alpine Tower: the best view at camp! The evening brings flag lowering, dinner, and an evening activity such as a pool party, large-group game, or an allcamp activity based on the weekly theme. During the final evening at camp, campers and staff will enjoy a Girl Scout staple - a campfire. Staff lead everyone in much-loved camp songs and units to perform skits they’ve created and practiced throughout the week. 14

If you can’t quite imagine what it all looks like, see for yourself! We’d love you to stop by our free open house on March 17 to check out our facilities and meet some camp staff.

Camp Financial Assistance Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines understands the value of camp for our Girl Scout families. That’s why we’re dedicated to offering these important programs at affordable rates. Camp fees cover most council direct costs such as food, program supplies, supplementary health and accident insurance, and camp counselor salaries. Indirect costs such as planning and administering the program, registration, and property maintenance are costs subsidized by the council. Did you know that cookies help to make summer camp happen? Proceeds from the Girl Scout Cookie Program help our council provide high-quality summer experiences for all youth. GS–NCCP spends $900 per camper to give them an amazing week at one of our Girl Scout overnight summer camps, while most families are only asked to pay half the cost per camper. Even with that low rate, we know that camp can be out of reach for some families. That’s where camperships come in.

Camperships Financial assistance in the form of camperships enables all campers to enjoy the Girl Scout camp experience. Camperships are made possible thanks to our many generous donors and are available to currently registered Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines members who need assistance paying for the total cost of camp. To be considered for a campership, a camper must be a registered Girl Scout member, have selected and registered for their summer camp session, and paid the deposit fee. For more information about camperships or to apply online, please visit www.nccoastalpines.org. You can also apply by mail; a request form is included on page 27. Applications are due by April 1. Please note: Families may apply for a campership (financial assistance) for GS–NCCP members. The award amount varies and generally does not exceed $350 per member. Awards are limited to one session per Girl Scout member.

You can make summer overnight camp possible for a camper! Just mark your donation to the Campership Fund during the online registration process or on the registration form. Donations are tax-deductible.

With Sue Csorba’s vision and passion in mind, the fund provides a limited number of camperships each summer.
