Girl Scouting’s Highest Award
Since Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines was established in 2007, 934 Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors have achieved the highest award in Girl Scouting. Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines takes great pride in recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of the 30 Girl Scouts who earned their Gold Award from April 2023 to March 2024. Hats off to all of our Gold Award Girl Scouts for demonstrating courageous leadership, advocacy, and compassion; and for making the world a better place.
Steps to the Gold Award
Fulfilling the requirements for the Girl Scout Gold Award starts with the completion of two Senior or Ambassador Journeys or earning the Girl Scout Silver Award and completion of one Girl Scout Senior or Ambassador Journey. After the Journey requirement has been fulfilled, Girl Scouts spend a suggested minimum of 80 hours leading their team to tackle a community issue that impacts their target audience while raising awareness, educating, and inspiring others about the chosen issue and its root cause. Gold Award Girl Scouts work through the following steps on their path to success:

Project: Honoring the Fallen | Theme: Military/Veterans Affairs
Notable Mentions:
With great appreciation and respect for fallen United States veterans, Gold Award Girl Scout Elizabeth wanted to find a way for more people to honor them. For her Gold Award, Elizabeth created a scavenger hunt at Greenwood Cemetery to help students learn about the achievements of the veterans interred there. To do so, Elizabeth installed a display at the cemetery that included a map of veterans’ graves. She then distributed the scavenger hunt information to Selma Elementary School and Selma Public Library so that local students and community members could participate in the hunt. Looking ahead, Elizabeth plans to study animal science at Wayne Community College.

Notable Mentions:
Gold Award Girl Scout Emma wanted to inspire her peers to support the needs of those facing homelessness. For her Gold Award, Emma established “A Lotta Love” club at Jordan High School. The club made a plan and worked to renovate spaces at a local homeless shelter. Improvements to the shelter included new artwork and other updates to improve the quality of life of those living at the shelter. Currently, Emma is enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she studies journalism.

Project: Bringing Back the Bees | Theme: Environment & Sustainability
Notable Mentions:
Growing up going to Mayo Lake Park, Gold Award Girl Scout Katelyn decided she wanted to give back to her community. For her Gold Award, Kaitlyn educated Person County citizens on declining bee populations. To do so, she created educational materials which showed citizens how to create safe bee habitats. Katelyn also built bee boxes at Mayo Lake Park in areas that are surrounded by pollinator-friendly plants, and distant from pesticides and chemicals. Currently, Katelyn is enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where she is studying business administration.

Project: Children’s Mental Health | Theme: Mental Health
Notable Mentions:
With a goal of addressing children’s mental health and helping them de-stress, Gold Award Girl Scout Sarah created children’s programs for children at the Salvation Army of Wake County. The programs created by Sarah included salt and watercolor art, dog therapy, yoga and other fun activities for the children to enjoy. Sarah also created 50 age-specific care kits for children to take when they leave the shelter. The kits included additional stress-reducing items like a journal, stress balls, a blanket and more. Sarah will be graduating in 2024, and looks forward to her future endeavors.

Project: Women First Responders & Veterans Tea Party | Theme: Military/Veterans’ Affairs
Notable Mentions:
Gold Award Girl Scout Margaret wanted to help provide female veterans with a safe space to feel supported and uplifted. For her Gold Award, she held an event that recognized the accomplishments of women veterans and first responders. The event provided information about local support services and allowed participants to network with others with similar experiences. Margaret also established an ongoing support group, to ensure veterans always have a safe place to go for support. In the future, Margaret plans to study pharmacology at Campbell University, and also hopes to join the Air Force.
With a passion for pollinators, Gold Award Girl Scout Kyra created a pollinator garden and educated children on their importance for her Gold Award. Kyra helped the children build the garden at Two Dachshunds Farm, where she taught visitors about the role of pollinators in our environment. The visitors even had the chance to participate in games and activities that Kyra created to learn more about pollinators. Kyra also put together pollinator plant seed packets for the children to use to plant their own gardens at home.

Project: Brushing for Bright Futures | Theme: Physical Health
Notable Mentions:
Poor dental health can lead to problems down the line, and Gold Award Girl Scout Emma wanted to ensure that youth knew the importance of good dental health. For her Gold Award, Emma addressed the issue of poor dental health in low-income school-aged children by creating an educational program. The program was presented to 3rd and 4th grade classes at two Title I elementary schools in Nash and Edgecombe counties. Through the presentation, students were able to learn about how to properly brush and floss, making better food choices, and why oral health is important. They were also given tooth brushing kits to take home and put their new skills to the test. Emma is currently enrolled at East Carolina University to study communication.

Project: Susie’s Science | Theme: STEM
Notable Mentions:
With a goal of inspiring youth to get excited about science, Gold Award Girl Scout Susannah created hands-on, age-specific science activities for preschoolers. Susannah then presented these activities to preschoolers at a local preschool, where they had the chance to hold live animals and insects, make crafts, and sing songs about science. Susannah also shared her lessons with the preschool so that they could have them as a resource in the future. Currently, Susannah is enrolled at North Carolina State University where she is studying veterinary medicine.
Maintaining a sustainable lifestyle is a great way use resources wisely and give back to the planet, and Gold Award Girl Scout Danielle wanted to ensure children knew the importance of sustainability. For her Gold Award, Danielle decided to build a garden at a local elementary school. The garden taught children the importance of gardening, and allowed them to practice sustainability and taking care of crops. All of the produce from the garden was harvested and then donated to a local food pantry for others to enjoy. Danielle is currently enrolled at the Savannah College of Art and Design, where she studies animation.

Computer science is an important and growing field, and Gold Award Girl Scout Marisa wanted to encourage youth to learn more about it. For her Gold Award, Marisa developed a curriculum and held a six-day computer science workshop for students at Sycamore Creek Elementary School. The workshop focused on introducing computer science concepts and history and encouraged participants to pursue computer science programs. Marisa also distributed the curriculum to Wake County AIG Coordinators, so that more children will have access to computer science. Marisa’s future plans include studying computer engineering at a 4-year college or university.

Passionate about softball, Gold Award Girl Scout Madison wanted to find a way to provide more girls access to the sport. For her Gold Award, Madison implemented a mentoring program and free softball clinic in Brunswick County for girls ages 7-12. The mentoring program allowed young players to be paired with a player from the Brunswick Community College Softball Team. Through the clinic, players were taught key softball techniques and skills and learned tips and tricks from their experienced mentors. Looking ahead, Madison plans to attend a college or university and hopes to continue following her passion in the health and fitness field.

Project: Sportswear Sunday: Keeping Kids in the Game | Theme: Poverty
Notable Mentions:
After the COVID-19 pandemic shut down sporting programs, Gold Award Girl Scout Avery recognized the impact it had on her peers, and decided to research the long-term benefits of youth sports. After researching, Avery decided to raise awareness for local at-risk teens and their lack of access to sporting programs and needed equipment. To do so, Avery built a coaches’ guide and website that detailed ways to identify and help students atrisk of dropping out of their sport. In addition, Avery held a series of clothing drives and created a lending closet for Haven House, where she was able to collect over 100 items of clothing for teens in need. Avery’s future plans include furthering her studies at a college or university.
Knowing the role that key pollinators play in nature and the threats that pose harm to their populations, Bree made a plan to educate the community on the importance of bees. For her Gold Award, Bree presented information about sustaining bee populations at local outdoor events. At the events, Bree instructed her audience on how they could make and maintain their own bee boxes. In addition, Bree hand-crafted and painted over 10 bee boxes, and placed them throughout Wake County for more bees to enjoy. Bree’s future plans include furthering her education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Project: Operation Turtles in the Sun | Theme: Environment & Sustainability
Notable Mentions:
Turtles are cold-blooded, so basking in the sun is crucial for their survival and wellbeing. Knowing this, Gold Award Girl Scout Yannie decided to educate the community on the importance of turtle basking for her Gold Award. To do so, Yannie led workshops for children at her local YMCA, and prepared a craft which showed the kids how to build a turtle basking platform. Yannie also built two turtle basking platforms for the turtles at Veterans Park. Looking ahead, Yannie plans to attend Wake Tech and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where she will study environmental science.

Notable Mentions:
Passionate about the sport of swimming, Gold Award Girl Scout Langley addressed the issue of aquatic poverty and safety for her Gold Award. To ensure low-income families have access to swim lessons, Langley designed a water safety program. The program included a curriculum crafted by Langely that was taught at elementary schools and summer camps. The summer camp program also provided access to free swimming lessons, which taught participants basic swimming and safety skills. Currently, Langley is enrolled at Wesleyan University where she studies neuroscience.

Notable Mentions:
Gold Award Girl Scout Renée wanted to increase youth interest in arts and creativity. For her Gold Award, she ddesigned and taught a week-long art program at a local summer camp. The camp taught children creative freedom in art projects, using recycled and upcycled materials. Additionally, Renée showed children that art can be done anywhere and by using all kinds of materials. Looking ahead, Renée plans to further her education at a college or university.
Creating new ways for members of the community to learn about sustainability is a great way to make the world a better place. So, for her Gold Award project, Hannah created a website for citizens of the Triangle community to learn about living sustainably. The website served as a sustainable living resource guide that residents could reference as needed. Hannah also led the creation and installation of a community mural at Apex Community Park with the help of local residents. Currently, Hannah is enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she studies environmental sciencequantitative energy.

Notable Mentions:
Domestic and sexual violence are prominent topics that affect many people. For her Gold Award, Annalise educated teens about four topics in domestic and sexual violence. The four topics -safety at home, teen dating violence, bullying and emotional boundaries- were researched and then presented in workshop-style classes at the YMCA Leaders Club. In the presentations, Annalise covered definitions of each topic, statistics, warning signs, effects, and resources. Looking ahead, Annalise plans to study English and education at a college or university.

Notable Mentions:
Reading can have many benefits in relation to mental health and relaxation. With a goal of encouraging students to grow in their reading skills, Gold Award Girl Scout Lily created a literacy garden at her school. The garden provided comfortable seating and a calming environment for students to strengthen their reading skills. Lily was also sure to include a wide variety of reading materials for all levels and genres for school age children to enjoy, and QR codes with additional literacy resources. In the future, Lily plans to attend college to study biology and forensic science, and hopes to eventually land a job with the FBI, NCIS, or a similar organization.

Project: Bringing Art to the Lighthouse | Theme: Life Skills
Notable Mentions:
Knowing that recovery support is an important topic, Gold Award Girl Scout Carley raised awareness for and support for The Lighthouse Home, a residential facility for women overcoming addiction. To prioritize the mental health of residents at the facility, Carley introduced art therapy by creating a coloring book with each of the Narcotics Anonymous’ 12 steps to recovery. Carley used the coloring books to encourage residents to draw or paint whatever came to mind while discussing the 12 steps. While at the facility, Carley also painted a mural to inspire and encourage the residents. Currently, Carley is enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she studies nursing.

Notable Mentions:
Mental health is an important issue that affects everyone. For her Gold Award, Rama created a peer support club for students at her high school. The club met weekly to discuss different struggles they were facing and to learn about healthy coping mechanisms to maintain their mental health. Rama also crafted a guide for other high school students to learn how to start their own peer support club. Currently, Rama is studying mathematics and industrial engineering at Meredith College and North Carolina State University.

With a passion for STEM, Gold Award Girl Scout Anika recognized the hurdles that can arise and wanted to find a way to inspire girls to pursue STEM fields. For her Gold Award, Anika crafted a curriculum and held a STEM camp for 4th-7th grade girls. The camp aimed to empower girls and nurture their interest in STEM through a variety of engaging activities. While at the camp, participants received hands-on experience in technical skills and were encouraged to collaborate with their peers. Anika’s future plans include attending a four-year college or university to study aerospace engineering.

Project: Great Things Are In “Store” for Life Skills Students! | Theme: Education
Notable Mentions:
Jenna recognized that exceptional students at Spring Creek High School wanted to find a way to build stronger relationships with the larger student population. For her Gold Award, Jenna created and launched the “Now or Later Gator Store” at the school. The store provided a space for exceptional students to interact with traditional students, and work on their customer service, inventory control, cashier, and advertising skills. Jenna also crafted a curriculum that taught the students social and occupational skills, as well as daily living skills that help prepare them for customer-facing jobs. Currently, Jenna is enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.
Gold Award Girl Scout Angela knows the impact that microplastics can have on the environment. For her Gold Award, Angela built two machines that have the ability to shred and melt plastics for reuse. The machines were then installed at Campbell University Environmental Science Lab to teach students about the environmental impact of micro-plastics in the water table. Angela also crafted a curriculum to go along with the lab and presented it to students at the university. Currently, Angela is enrolled at Campbell University where she studies electrical engineering.

Notable Mentions:
Passionate about her faith and the importance of mental health, Gold Award Girl Scout Allison increased awareness by creating a pamphlet about mental health and prayer, and held classes for her teen youth group. Allison also created a prayer walk at her church, that serves as a place for people to relax and take time to focus on their mental health. The walk was complete with stones painted with positive messages for visitors to enjoy. Allison also shared informational posters at Wayne Community College and the Goldsboro YMCA. Currently, Allison is enrolled at Wayne Community College, where she is studying science.

Project: An Introduction to Gardening | Theme: Environment & Sustainability
Notable Mentions:
Building and maintaining a garden can be challenging, but very rewarding. That’s why Gold Award Girl Scout Isabel decided to educate her community on proper garden maintenance for her Gold Award. To do so, Isabel worked with the Veterans Administration Chaplain and Department of Occupational Health to revitalize the garden on the VA grounds. She also created a booklet, which outlined cultivation and care of 30 different plants, to help new gardeners get started on their own. Currently, Isabel is studying chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Knowing the importance of agricultural waste reduction, Jackie educated her community on composting, sustainable gardening, and reducing their carbon footprint. To do so, Jackie hosted tours for visitors of Priority Farms and provided them with information on renewable energy and other sustainable farming practices. Jackie also constructed a wooden compost bin at the farm, to serve as a demonstration of ways to reduce agricultural waste. The bin included three separate compartments with removeable fronts, in order for the compost to be processed properly. Jackie is currently attending Brown University where she is studying chemical engineering.

Project: Nursing Home Resident Resource Room | Theme: Elderly Issues
Notable Mentions:
With a goal of raising awareness of social isolation in nursing homes, Gold Award Girl Scout Sarah created a resource closet at Pender Skilled Nursing Center. The resource closet was stocked with fidget items, puzzles, and other resources to help keep residents entertained. Sarah also educated the community about the needs of nursing home residents, and even established ongoing relationships between the nursing center and five community organizations. The relationships will ensure that support will continue to be provided for the residents. Sarah is currently a senior at Pender Early College High School, and plans to attend a four-year university or college in the future.

GSUSA Gold Award Scholarship
The GSUSA Gold Award Scholarship is awarded annually to one Girl Scout from each council who has demonstrated extraordinary leadership, measurable and sustainable impact, and addressed an issue of national and/or global significance. Girl Scouts who earn their Gold Award between April 1 and March 31 and are high school seniors or graduates are eligible to apply. Girl Scouts who earn their Gold Award in 9th through 11th grade will be eligible to apply when they reach 12th grade. The annual recipient will receive movement-wide recognition, and may have an opportunity to represent Girl Scouts through public relations, speaking engagements, or other related opportunities.
Jane S. Barringer Award
The Jane S. Barringer Award was established to honor Mrs. Barringer, an outstanding teen advisor who has been a dedicated Girl Scout for more than 50 years. A group of her former Girl Scouts, along with Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines and the Barringer family, have instituted an award in her name to be given to an individual who embodies the principles and spirit “Mrs. B” works to instill. This award is open to Gold Award Girl Scouts who are high school seniors or adult professionals pursuing further education or skill development.
Misty Crabtree Eastham Scholarship
The Misty Crabtree Eastham Scholarship was established to honor the memory of lifelong Girl Scout Misty Crabtree Eastham, and provides scholarships for Gold Award Girl Scouts to help defray college expenses. As a girl in foster care, Misty joined Girl Scouts and gained a network of friends to support and guide her— friends who joined her in a journey of adventure that provided life-changing opportunities. Misty’s scholarship recognizes and rewards Girl Scouts with these same qualities. Misty completed an Associate’s degree, a Bachelor’s degree, a certificate program, and had been accepted to a Pharmacy Tech program before she was diagnosed with her cancer.
Gladys Marion Scholarship
The Gladys Marion Scholarship was made possible by a lifetime member of Girl Scouts who gave of her time and shared her talents to support Girl Scouts as they developed their leadership skills and prepared to be the next generation of leaders. This four-year scholarship recognizes those who have demonstrated significant leadership as members of Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines through earning their Girl Scout Gold Award or equivalent participation in council leadership programs.

The Girl Scout Silver Award stands as the pinnacle of achievement for a Girl Scout Cadette, symbolizing leadership, organization, determination, and a dedication to community betterment. 115 Girl Scout Cadettes achieved their Silver Award this year, totaling over 5750 hours. Have you ever felt the urge to change your neighborhood or school for the better? Pursuing this highest honor provides you with that opportunity. Earning the Silver Award places you in an exceptional group of Girl Scouts who have leveraged their knowledge and leadership skills to make a real difference in the world. Steps to the Silver Award
As a Girl Scout, you’re committed to doing your best. Each Cadette completes 50 hours towards the Girl Scout Silver Award, whether working individually or as part of a team. To earn the Girl Scout Silver Award, you’ll complete these steps:

Girl Scouting’s Bronze Award
The Girl Scout Bronze Award is a leadership adventure embarked on by over half a million Girl Scout Juniors across our movement — including 365 Juniors from Girl Scouts - North Carolina Coastal Pines who contributed over 7300 hours to their communities. The Bronze Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can earn. It embodies the spirit of teamwork and allows Girl Scouts to make a significant difference in the world. The journey towards this award fosters confidence, introduces the Girl Scouts to new people, and instills in them the fulfillment that comes from collaborating with other Girl Scouts to enact positive change. As you venture into this Girl Scout Bronze Award adventure, you become a representative of what Girl Scouts can accomplish in their communities, all while having fun and making the experience enjoyable for everyone involved.
Steps to the Bronze Award
As a Girl Scout, you are expected to navigate this process with courage, confidence, and character, ultimately making a difference in the world around you. To earn the Girl Scout Bronze Award, each Girl Scout completes 20 hours through the following steps:

• Explore your community and identify areas for improvement.
