MY GSTAAD AND ITS CASTLE

Y

ou’re not dreaming: summer is just around the corner. And with it, your chance to unwind, enjoy, and thrive in our inspiring setting, surrounded by the unique Alpine mountainscape. A modernised indoor pool, a refreshed outdoor pool area, a new board room: we have spent the last few months improving and refining. I won’t lie to you – there’s real effort behind all the fairy tale magic. No wands, no spells, no potions. Instead, our staff and family use their real-world skills, passion and expertise to make your wishes come true in an ever fast-changing world. For me personally, this year has a special challenge in stock: I’m humbled and honoured to be the newly elected chairman of The Leading Hotels of the World. We are a collection of authentic and often family owned luxury hotels, inviting travellers from around the world to immerse themselves in the decidedly extraordinary. Because what’s better than a fairy tale? Real experiences. Authentic traditions. Genuine hospitality. Distinguished pleasures. I can’t wait to welcome you and your loved ones to the Gstaad Palace once again. Sincerely,

Andrea Scherz

AUDEMARS PIGUET Fly over the peaks of the Swiss Alps to the heart of haute horlogerie. For all fans and connoisseurs of luxury watches: We will make your high-flying dreams come true! A helicopter takes you from Gstaad Airport on a spectacular flight over the Alps to Le Brassus to visit the workshops of Audemars Piguet, where you can get an insight into the fine art of Swiss watchmaking - including culinary flights of fancy.

WINE BY FAMILY MARTEL Being fascinated by high-quality wine also implies being in love with it. In our hotel, this love for highest wine culture is conveyed by the wine specialist Martel, which is, like the Gstaad Palace, family-run for five generations. From Chablais to Chardonnay, from Nebbiolo to Napa – Martel stands for a wide range of wines, including top rarities like the ones from the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Hence, for Martel, wine is not a good, it is artwork which they dedicate a lot of personal resources to, from selection to delivery to the Gstaad Palace. Proudly, due to Martel, we are able to provide access to highest wine culture.

ow do we translate the Palace experience into the virtual world?

That’s what we asked communication pros and digital experts. More and unique imagery, new booking features, and state-of-theart storytelling techniques: In June 2022, the new website of the Gstaad Palace will go live. “The Gstaad Palace is more than a fancy place to stay. It’s an experience”, says Stefan Ludwig, Executive Assistant Manager Sales & Marketing, at the Gstaad Palace. “A team of dedicated professionals has created a similarly unforgettable online experience.” The new website aims to be more than just another booking site: it will give friends of the digital a new and exciting playing field. ‘HAUSER & WIRTH’

Interview with James Koch, Partner and Executive Director at Hauser & Wirth Hauser & Wirth has a presence in Gstaad for a number of years, what are your activities here? We found a permanent home in the former chalet of Gunther Sachs, the Vieux Chalet, which has been used by Hauser & Wirth as a private space since 2015. It functions as an unorthodox setting to view art, where we curate eclectic art hangings of works by modern masters such as Picasso, Joan Miró, and Philip Guston, combined by works by more contemporary artists including Rashid Johnson, Nicolas Party, and Lorna Simpson, to resemble that of a collector’s home. We have since presented other public art projects in the area in collaboration with the Gstaad Palace, such as the Jenny Holzer truism projections and the Martin Creed neon which were shown on the façade of the building. Since 2018, we have hosted solo presentations at the exhibition space Tarmak22, including Jenny Holzer, Louise Bourgeois, Paul McCarthy and Günther Förg. Together with our artists, we are always delighted to bring pieces of art to the mountains. Since founding our first gallery in Zurich three decades ago, opening another space in Gstaad felt like a natural © see separate caption information extension given the gallery’s Swiss DNA. There is a vibrant art scene in Switzerland, including this part of the Alps, and we feel grateful to be standing amongst some of the most outstanding institutions, private collections and galleries in Europe. What is your advice to someone who wants to start building a collection? I think the most important decision to take is, considering whether collecting artworks, or artists, that you love and admire. Equally important is, to identify the kind of aesthetics that you like – so do your research. Go to as many shows and see as much art as possible.

How does a gallery choose the artists they represent? It’s important to consider an artist from a 360 degree perspective. This includes considerations such as their market and performance at auctions but as important are the museum exhibitions and museum acquisitions. In our case, sometimes the artists on our roster introduce us to other artists that connect with our programme, for example contemporary artists that feel affinities with the modern masters we represent. Which artists are you inspired by? We have so many incredible modern and contemporary artists on our programme, that it is impossible to choose just one. However, I am inspired by great women artists like Jenny Holzer, Pipilotti Rist, Lousie Bourgeois, Sophie Taeuber Arp, as well as the painter Philip Guston, to name just a few. Jenny Holzer’s Truisms are such iconic and important works. For more than forty years Holzer has presented text emblazoned on T-shirts, carved in stone, painted on canvas, scrolling on LED signs, and luminously projected onto buildings and landscapes. Holzer’s texts address oppression, gender, sexuality, power, and war. In 2019 we invited her to project some of her famous truisms onto the façade of the Gstaad Palace.

THE WALIG HUT

Preserving the past to develop the future sustainably. It’s the stuff fairy tales are made of: Our Walig Hut stands alone at 1,700 metres above sea level. The Gstaad Palace has leased and lovingly renovated this authentic alpine hut from 1783. A night up here, far from the world, is a dream come true. Our hut warden Maurizo Paglino stirs a fondue over the open fire. For lunch, he serves slices of cheese and air-cured beef. And in the morning, you can look forward to a proper alpine breakfast. Spend the night in our cosy hut, with only the sound of cowbells to lull you gently into a deep sleep. Our Walig Hut has space for a family with two children and is ideal for one night. During the day, we serve lunch or dinner for 4 to 14 guests.

Come on up! Contact us at events@palace.ch or call us on +41 33 748 50 00 For further information about our sustainability concepts please visit palace.ch

HOTEL MANAGER AKA VITTORIO DI CARLO

H

e makes sure everyone is happy and things are working smoothly: Vittorio Di Carlo is the operational brain of the Gstaad Palace.

A lot of passion, patience – and to always be ready for the unexpected. Once our doors open for the season, the hotel runs at full speed. No time to warm up the engine. How do you separate work and private life? The key to a long career in hospitality is to be able to disconnect from work. Once I get home, I try to be fully present enjoying life with my wife. Why did you decide to pursue a career in hospitality? I knew it when I was a child! Whenever I saw a beautiful hotel in a movie, I told my parents, “I will manage a hotel like this”. My parents owned several shops, so I learned to meet and exceed customers’ expectations early on. What sets the Gstaad Palace apart? Its history, heritage, and guests are unique. Our hotel has a special energy, I felt it from the first moment. The Gstaad Palace and its team members are like a family and our guests are an important part of it!

© Melanie Uhkoetter

What does it take to work in a hotel like the Gstaad Palace?

In your opinion, what is the most challenging aspect of a hotel manager’s job? My role is to make sure that team members are happy, our guests are satisfied, and we are profitable enough to continue investing in the property. That’s a lot of needs to satisfy. How did you discover your passion for the piano? One day, I was listening to our pianist. And I thought, “you can do that, too, Vittorio”. So, I tried. Now I know that playing the Piano is definitely not one of my strengths
