Annual Report 2019 1

Mission Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

The Girl Scout Promise On my honor, I will try: To serve God* and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

The Girl Scout Law I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout. *Girl Scouts of Utah makes no attempt to define or interpret the word “God” in the Girl Scout Promise. It looks to individual members to establish for themselves the nature of their spiritual beliefs. When making the Girl Scout Promise, individuals may substitute wording appropriate to their own spiritual beliefs for the word “God.”

Dear Girl Scouts of Utah Members and Supporters, At Girl Scouts of Utah, girls are at the center of all we do. This year we celebrated Girl Scouts of Utah’s Centennial, marking 100 years of Girl Scouting in Utah, and reflected on the commitment and passion for serving girls over the decades. We launched growth initiatives designed to work toward increasing our membership. Girl Scouts of Utah is committing resources to broaden our reach and tell our story so we can serve more girls. This requires all hands on deck from volunteers, staff, and our community partners. Our top priority is to make sure that every girl gets to be a Girl Scout. Every girl deserves—and needs—this experience. While 2020 will be defined by unprecedented challenges and uncertainty, we are more committed than ever to serving girls in our great state. We know how important it is to feel connected to one another, especially now. Challenge creates opportunity, and through navigating these times, we launched completely new ways of delivering our programs virtually to serve the girls in our state and throughout our nation. As you look through this year’s Annual Report you will see how Girl Scouts of Utah is influencing today’s young women in powerful ways. We develop leadership qualities in each girl as we partner with hundreds of incredible volunteers to provide opportunities that inspire girls to be their best. We hope you will gain the same sense of optimism that we have for the future of our girls.

Yours in Girl Scouting,

This October 11, 2019, 50 high school and college-age Girl Scouts and young alums joined 400 business and community leaders to celebrate Girl Scouts of Utah’s second annual Utah Day of the Girl at the Salt Lake City Marriott Downtown at City Creek. Held to coincide with the International Day of the Girl, this celebratory day was presented by Dominion Energy and recognized the power and potential of girls in Utah. We also honored four Girl Champions, leaders in each of our four pillars: STEM, Entrepreneurship, Life Skills, and Outdoors. Our 2019 Girl Champions: STEM — Deepika de Silva, BioFire Diagnostics, LLC Life Skills — Dr. Susan R. Madsen, Utah Valley University Outdoors — Heidi Redd, Dugout Ranch, Indian Creek Cattle Company Entrepreneurship — Ali Hynek, Nena & Co. Guests also heard an inspiring story of perseverance and making your own choices from special guest, President and CEO of Utah Food Bank, Ginette Bott. The event was as much about recognizing current girl successes as it was providing a mentorship opportunity for Girl Scouts. Girls who attended the event had the opportunity to sit and network with a table of women and men from various industries and learn about potential career paths. Utah Day of the Girl provided an inspirational and powerful message about Girl Scouts and our impact on young women in Utah! Next year, Utah Day of the Girl will take place during Girl Scouts of Utah’s centennial, sure to be an exceptionally exciting and memorable event.

OUR PROGRAMS ARE

Built for Every Girl

OUTDOORS

STEM

Girl Scouts have room to explore, seek new challenges, and discover their strengths through our Outdoor Programming. Whether it’s their first outdoor experience, or they’re already a master of the outdoors, there’s something for every Girl Scout. The summer camp experience is truly a building block in the development of girls into successful and resourceful young women. In outdoor settings, girls develop a strong sense of self, gain practical life skills, become resourceful problem solvers, and cultivate healthy relationships.

Girls become women who team up to invent the future, thanks to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programming through Girl Scouts. Here she can build a robot, design a car, research new discoveries, and study the stars. With programs like Robots Rock, Science Explorers, Think Like Programs like Horse Lover, Night Owls, Up in the Trees, Camp Chef, and an Engineer, Astronomy Explorers Campapalooza are ideal for learning outdoor skills, trying high adventure Day, and more, the possibilities activities, and being part of adventures she’ll remember her whole life! are endless! STEM can take her Outdoor experiences give girls an opportunity to develop leadership anywhere she wants to go! skills that will stay with them throughout their adult lives and careers.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP Everything girls do in Girl Scouting is designed to help them grow into leaders of courage, confidence, and character. The five skills that girls learn through our entrepreneurship programs are an important ingredient in the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. The entrepreneurship badgeearning program combines financial literacy, business skills, and innovation through girl-driven programs like Cookie Pro, the Fall Product Program, and the Girl Scout Cookie Program where she takes the lead to reach her goals.

LIFE SKILLS Girls gain essential skills from reallife experiences in programs such as Advocacy, Civic Engagement, Staying Fit, Making Games, and more. Whether it’s by exercising and staying healthy, developing strong relationships with family and peers, advocating on behalf of others, protecting our environment, or exploring careers that can truly change the world for the better, girls gain the skills and the inspiration to accept challenges, overcome obstacles, and take the lead.

I loved going to camp! The rock climbing was great and we learned about

On November 9, 2019, Girl Scouts of Utah held our annual Recognition of Excellence award ceremony and luncheon, where we celebrated 10 Gold Award Girl Scouts, 58 Silver Award Girl Scouts, and 180 Bronze Award Girl Scouts. We also recognized three families and 37 dedicated volunteers, all examples of incredible role models and leaders who support girls throughout our state. Each of these girls and volunteers have shown dedication to making their communities and their world a better place, and we are excited to see what they will do next!

Amelia Slama-Catron was inspired to create an initiative to help encourage low-income kids and families to eat healthy and balanced meals. She collected and distributed food to more than 70 families in Midvale and donated soccer equipment to the Boys & Girls Club of Midvale. As part of her initiative, she also made an online website with downloadable PDFs, a place for people to donate and get involved, and healthy recipes in English and Spanish. Throughout her project, Amelia refined her leadership and communication skills, ¡especialmente en Español!

Ashley Rose felt compelled to call attention to emergency preparedness in her own community. She visited her local junior high school and community events to talk about natural disasters, being prepared, and creating and sustaining 72-hour kits. Ashley was proud of how much she had learned about preparedness and excited by the opportunity to share her knowledge with others. Bella Lonardo avid reader, she understood the power of a good book, so for her Gold Award Project she used literacy to help women and their children while they’re in recovery facilities for substance abuse. Bella built two libraries and collected over 2,500 books for a Volunteers of America recovery facility for women and children. Today her two libraries continue to give women a place to access resources regarding addiction, spark children’s interest in reading, and help everyone in the facility relax with a productive hobby. When presenting the final product, she spoke to the National Ability Center’s staff about the cart’s importance and maintenance requirements and provided them with user manuals for the cart.

10

Fatima Faizi created a documentary called “Reviving Heritage” for her Gold Award Project to help preserve culture, language and heritage. She was inspired by her grandmother who told her the story about the partition between India and Pakistan. Fatima’s grandmother told her about her family’s journey and the obstacles they had to face. Fatima had the realization that she might be the only person in the world to hear this story, and that broke her heart. She wanted everyone to hear it; so she began creating the documentary. Fatima recognized how challenging creating the final product was, but is grateful for all of the skills she gained throughout the process. Kaylan Christensen noticed that many students don’t know the importance of kitchen safety, even though they might be expected to help cook for their families. She created a website to teach students kitchen safety basics that teachers can also use as an additional resource for their classes. Kaylan created five lesson plans to help kids learn how to be safe in the kitchen. Each lesson includes a written lesson plan, video, in-class activity, review game, assessment, take-home activity, and recipe. Kaylan then made the lessons and resources available on her website.

Ruth Bloomquist had untreated hearing loss until recently when she got her first set of hearing aids. Her experience made her think about others who struggle with the same issue, so for her Gold Award Project she created a hearing aid awareness campaign. Ruth prepared presentations for staff at assisted living homes and made educational videos about untreated hearing loss, how to clean and care for hearing aids, and how to help hearing aid users. Then she shared her videos and presentations online. Through her project, Ruth overcame her fear of public speaking and learned how to use social media for good.

Samantha Macuga created a sensory cart for the National Ability Center, a non-profit that helps individuals with disabilities participate in outdoor recreation activities. A sensory cart is a portable version of a sensory room and is designed to engage and refine all the senses, an important part of child development. Sam cleaned and painted a cart with bright colors. Then to outfit the cart, she researched the best sensory activities and purchased the necessities. Savannah Wallace was shocked by the traffic violations made against school buses, even when their red lights are flashing and stops signs are extended. After doing some research, she set up a website with information about the issue in Utah and nationwide and collected over 800 pledges at local events and meetings. Finally, she brought her concerns up with local and state student transportation experts, members of the PTA, and members of the state government, including Rep. Michael McKell and Gov. Gary Herbert.

Sophia Goodwin’s Gold Award project addressed the need for more test preparation books in her school library as a resource for students to prepare for their college readiness exams. She tackled this problem by starting an annual book drive. Sophia noticed that students at her school would often throw away test prep books after one year of use, even though they can last for up to three or four years. Sophia used this as an opportunity to eliminate unnecessary waste and help students in need. Her school library now has a designated shelf for test prep books as well as more information about their online resources.

Tara Tankersley noticed that many girls’ voices were not being heard on STEM teams, which caused the girls to lose confidence in their abilities to succeed in STEM. Tara decided to design and create Core Values boxes for STEM teams that are filled with activities that encourage teamwork. She met with STEM teams, distributed the boxes, led the students through activities, gave out grant information, and encouraged the girls on the teams. Tara also made sure all of the resources she created are available online for educators.

Silver Award Girl Scouts Through earning their Girl Scout Silver Award, girls learn courage by pushing beyond their perceived limits to reach their dreams. They gain confidence by discovering their strengths in a supportive girl-only environment and develop character by continually learning about themselves, their community, and their world.

On August 16 and 17, 2019, over 100 women joined us at Camp Cloud Rim to experience Girl Scouts of Utah camp with a grown-up “glamping” flare at our annual Camping for a Cause fundraising event. Guests were greeted on Friday with a sparkling welcome and a beautiful view of Lake Brimhall tucked into the mountains above Park City. That evening, we celebrated the highlights of our program and the impact Girl Scouts of Utah has made for girls across the state. Our guests joined us for a silent auction before hitting the dance floor, watching a movie under the stars, and topping off the night with one of the best Girl Scouts traditions, S’mores by the fire. On Saturday, everyone had the chance to participate in classic camp activities and signature Camping for a Cause adventures. Guests curated their own perfect days at camp, from fly-fishing lessons, stand-up paddle boarding, and picturesque hikes to outdoor yoga, guided painting, and flower arranging. 22

Girl Scouts of Utah lost Nancy Giles, a dedicated supporter and Girl Scouts of Utah Distinguished Alumni, in May 2019. Nancy’s service to GSU began when she was a young woman and grew throughout the years. She worked at Girl Scouts of Utah, and later served two terms as Board Chair. Nancy was a fierce ambassador for our programs and outdoor properties. While Board Chair, she secured funding for the council resource center, and was instrumental in the capital campaign to rebuild Camp Cloud Rim. Nancy enriched the lives of all those around her, bringing kindness, joy, humor, and fun to family and friends alike. She embodied the Girl Scout Promise and Law throughout her life, exemplifying being “honest and fair, friendly and helpful” and “considerate and caring.” She certainly made the world a better place.
