Mission Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. The Girl Scout Promise On my honor, I will try: To serve God* and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law. The Girl Scout Law I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout. *Girl Scouts of Utah makes no attempt to define or interpret the word “God” in the Girl Scout Promise. It looks to individual members to establish for themselves the nature of their spiritual beliefs. When making the Girl Scout Promise, individuals may substitute wording appropriate to their own spiritual beliefs for the word “God.”

Dear Girl Scouts of Utah Members and Supporters, When we look back at 2020, the Girl Scout Law gained a new significance as we navigated our way through an unprecedented year: Being honest and fair, and courageous and strong; using resources wisely; respecting ourselves and others, and making the world a better place are values that Girl Scouts live by. The values of the Girl Scout Law are embedded in the way we interact with the world and one another. These values will also help us solve the challenges of tomorrow—however complex they may become. With the onset of the global pandemic, Girl Scouts of Utah quickly got to work and developed adaptations to all of our programs so that we could continue to reach girls and help them stay connected. In 2020, we changed the way we did almost everything; from our cookie program, to troop meetings, to summer camps, to our participation in the triennial National Council session. With your help, Girl Scouts of Utah kept moving ahead while keeping girls at the center of all we do. As we look toward summer and the excitement of re-opening our camps, we have never been more grateful to be able to offer these incredible resources and experiences to Girl Scouts. At camp, girls develop a strong sense of self, gain practical life skills, become resourceful problem solvers, and cultivate healthy relationships by living and working together. We look forward to making memories, and having adventures together, once again. Girl Scouts of Utah continues to be committed to broadening our reach and telling our story so we can serve more girls. This requires all-hands-on-deck from volunteers, staff, community partners, and Board of Directors. Our top priority is to make sure that every girl gets the opportunity to be a Girl Scout. Every girl deserves—and needs—this experience. As you look through this year’s Annual Report you will see how Girl Scouts of Utah persevered through the pandemic, often embracing the challenge as if we were “building an airplane while in flight.” While we do not know what challenges we may face tomorrow, we know that as Girl Scouts, we will overcome them together.

Yours in Girl Scouting,

Our Programs Are Built for Every Girl OUTDOORS With Girl Scouts Outdoor Programming, girls explore, seek new challenges, and discover their strengths. Outdoor experiences give girls an opportunity to develop leadership skills that will stay with them throughout their adult lives and careers. With programs like Horse Lover, Night Owls, Camp Chef, and more, girls will try high adventure activities, learn outdoor skills, and be part of adventures she’ll remember her whole life! For the safety of our girls, volunteers, and staff, inperson programs scheduled for March through August of 2020, including summer camp, were canceled. Instead, Girl Scouts of Utah created virtual experiences for girls. Summer Camp: Home Edition and virtual leadership programs offered a safe alternative to resident camp for 143 girls. Troop camping also went virtual for 178 participants, who worked on the centennial patch program and Meet the CEO patch. Three Never the Same Weekends programs hosted 133 participants before in-person programming was canceled. Girl Scouts of Utah’s minicamps hosted 505 members. In the fall, day-only programs for small family groups were offered, with strict safety, cleaning, and disinfecting protocols that included masks and social distancing between members of different households.

STEM Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programming with Girl Scouts can take girls anywhere they want to go. She can build a robot, design a car, research new discoveries, and study the stars. Our program team quickly adapted our STEM programs to a virtual format, which allowed us to deliver the same exciting programs to girls in Utah, across the country, and Puerto Rico. We hosted 1,077 girls in STEM programs like Robots Rock, Science Explorers, Think Like a Programmer, and Coding Basics.

6

ENTREPRENEURSHIP The five skills that girls learn through our entrepreneurship programs are an important part of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. The entrepreneurship badge-earning program combines financial literacy, business skills, and innovation through girl-driven programs like the Fall Product Program and the Girl Scout Cookie Program, where she takes the lead to reach her goals. We hosted 633 members between our entrepreneurship and life skills programs, including entrepreneurship programs with Little Brownie Baker.

LIFE SKILLS Girls gain essential skills from real-life experiences in programs such as Advocacy, Civic Engagement, Staying Fit, Making Games, and more. Whether it’s by exercising and staying healthy, developing strong relationships with family and peers, advocating on behalf of others, protecting our environment, or exploring careers that can truly change the world for the better, girls gain the skills and the inspiration to accept challenges, overcome obstacles, and take the lead. We hosted 633 members between our life skills and entrepreneurship programs, including an updated color guard program.

Girl Program

1920-2020

Girl Scouts of Utah celebrated our centennial year in 2020. To commemorate 100 years, a Centennial Patch Program was developed so our girls could experience what it used to be like to be a Girl Scout as they explored some badge requirements from each decade. To earn an exclusive centennial patch, girls completed a total of 50 requirements, including at least one in each of the 10 categories. Unfortunately, our planned celebrations for our centennial and regular programming were canceled. We quickly adapted to provide virtual programs to keep Girl Scouts going when in-person activities were canceled. Within days we launched Girl Scouting at Home in conjunction with GSUSA’s own Girl Scouts at Home website to provide virtual programming and activities to girls. We hosted 1,764 girls in our virtual programs focused in STEM, outdoors, life skills, and entrepreneurship. In September, 150 girls and adults joined us for Girl Empowered, a virtual conference for girls who want to advocate for themselves and others. The event featured inspirational and motivational speakers and sessions, including Lindsay and Lexie Kite, founders of Beauty Redefined; and Gail Miller, businesswoman and former owner of the Utah Jazz.

For the safety of our members and staff, Girl Scouts of Utah’s in-person Recognition of Excellence award ceremony and luncheon was canceled. We celebrated our four Gold Award Girl Scouts, 54 Silver Award Girl Scouts, and 131 Bronze Award Girl Scouts through our social media, website, and member communications. Our CEO and Board Chair also visited our Gold Award Girl Scouts to congratulate them on their achievements. Many of our girls were forced to adapt their projects when COVID-19 made it unsafe to continue with their original plans. Each of these girls has shown incredible dedication to making their communities a better place, and we can’t wait to see what they do next!

Gold Award Girl Scouts Anna created 20 mindfulness buckets for special education students in four junior high and high schools. These buckets were created for students to build mindfulness and to improve behavior, helping them recognize when they needed to take a break. They contain sensory items and breathing and reflective exercises to help students calm down and reflect on their actions and emotions.

1920-2020

Cosette used technology to educate her local and global community about small habits for people to start on a path to environmental sustainability. Inspired by her love of the outdoors, Cosette created workshops for kids and adults and on social media platforms to demonstrate how gardening can give back to the community.

Izzibelle taught over 450 elementary students in 18 classrooms about why they shouldn’t feed bread to ducks, sharing healthy alternatives. Izzibelle used her experience with animals and observations of numerous bags of bread at ponds to educate others on the lack of nutrition in bread for animals. Sierra brought music education in English and Spanish to rural, Spanish-speaking communities, including two web-based lessons in both languages. Inspired by a service trip to the Dominican Republic, Sierra solicited and received donations of musical instruments and equipment and located Spanish piano lesson books for instruction. In a Spanish-speaking border town in Arizona, 16 children registered for the first instruction. See Sierra’s piano lessons online.

Silver Award Girl Scouts Through their Girl Scout Silver Award project, girls focus on an issue they care about and take action to make a difference. They learn courage and confidence by pushing beyond their perceived limits and discovering their strengths in a supportive girl-only environment. It is the highest honor a Girl Scout Cadette can achieve.

Staying Connected

Without in-person meetings, troops and service units had to adapt to a virtual format for their Girl Scout activities. Girl Scouts developed a partnership with Zoom to offer discounted year-long licenses for its members, and GSU issued 69 licenses to our troops and service units! Through such challenging times, our volunteers and girls continued to exemplify what it means to be a Girl Scout by supporting one another and finding new ways to be together while apart. One of our amazing and creative troop leaders, Timbra Wiist, coordinated a door drop for her Girl Scouts who were feeling disconnected in May 2020. She created baskets full of goodies, complete with hand-painted signs and garden pinwheel flowers, a notebook and pen, a hat for a virtual end of the year party, a framed photo of the whole troop, a handwritten note, badges, and a list of the badge requirements they’d completed or had left to do. Plus, each girl got a s’mores pack, and the girls in 8th grade received goodies to celebrate their graduation!

Leadership Summit 2020

Due to the impact of COVID-19, Leadership Summit 2020 was held virtually, and 91 service unit volunteers attended this training and development event hosted by Girl Scouts of Utah. Volunteers participated in various workshops, networked with other teams, and connected with GSU staff. Workshops and trainings focused on topics like communications and recruitment, as well as how to use tools and resources for meetings. The virtual summit also included an overview of the National Proposals for the upcoming National Council Session.

Adult Awardees

Girl Scouts of Utah’s in-person Recognition of Excellence award ceremony and luncheon was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We recognized four families and 29 adult volunteers through our social media, website, and member communications. These incredible volunteers were honored for their dedication and commitment, often going above and beyond to be there for their girls, troops, and service units. Full descriptions of each award are available on our website. We are grateful to our volunteers for supporting girls throughout Utah and for being incredible role models and leaders. Our CEO and Board Chair also visited numerous adult awardees to congratulate them on their achievements. 14

The 2020 Girl Scout Cookie season was cut short when Girl Scouts of Utah made the unfortunate but necessary decision to suspend cookie booths and in-person cookie deliveries at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. With about a week left of their sale at the time of the suspension, our girls and cupboards were left with thousands of cases of unsold cookies. Cookie sales support the development of important skills in leadership, entrepreneurship, STEM, and outdoors, and support scholarships for girls. To help our hard-working cookie entrepreneurs and support future Girl Scout programs, GSUSA launched the Girl Scouts Cookie Care campaign to encourage cookie supporters to go online and purchase cookies for shipping to their homes or donating to Hometown Heroes. Boxes donated to Hometown Heroes were taken from girls’ inventories and distributed to first responders, frontline volunteers, and local causes in need when it was safe to do so. With so much unsold inventory, Harmons Grocery generously stepped in and took cookies on consignment to sell in their stores. For a limited time, customers could purchase cookies at all Harmons in Utah for the same price as if they purchased directly from a girl at a booth, with all proceeds staying local with the girls, troops, and council. In total, over 72,000 packages of cookies were sold in stores! Thank you, Harmons, for being a true Hometown Hero!

On October 11, 2019, 50 high school and college-age Girl Scouts and young alums joined 400 business and community leaders to celebrate Girl Scouts of Utah’s second annual Utah Day of the Girl at the Salt Lake City Marriott Downtown at City Creek. Held to coincide with International Day of the Girl, this celebratory day was presented by Dominion Energy and recognized the power and potential of girls in Utah. We also honored four Girl Champions, leaders in each of our four pillars: STEM, Entrepreneurship, Life Skills, and Outdoors.

Our 2019 Girl Champions: STEM — Deepika de Silva, BioFire Diagnostics, LLC Life Skills — Dr. Susan R. Madsen, Utah Valley University Outdoors — Heidi Redd, Dugout Ranch, Indian Creek Cattle Company Entrepreneurship — Ali Hynek, Nena & Co. Guests also heard an inspiring story of perseverance and making life-changing choices from special guest, President and CEO of Utah Food Bank, Ginette Bott. The event was as much about recognizing current girl successes as it was providing a mentorship opportunity for Girl Scouts. Girls who attended the event had the opportunity to sit and network with a table of women and men from various industries and learn about potential career paths. Utah Day of the Girl provided an inspirational and powerful message about Girl Scouts and our impact on young women in Utah! Learn more about Utah Day of the Girl 20

On August 15, 2020, over 100 women joined us for Camp-In for a Cause, a virtual adaptation of our annual fundraising event normally held at Camp Cloud Rim. The event reached beyond Utah, bringing together women from Arizona, Georgia, Maryland, Minnesota, and Texas for this memorable morning. Courtney Carver, author of Soulful Simplicity and Project 333, kicked off the morning with an inspiring keynote address. Attendees created their perfect experience from a selection of numerous uplifting sessions in heart-opening yoga, active listening, River Writing, how to create an anti-racist home, courageous leadership, and more. Throughout the event, we celebrated the highlights of our program and the impact of Girl Scouts of Utah with success stories. Attendees had the option to purchase swag bags of gifts from local business partners and GSU. Lavanya Mahate, owner and founder of Saffron Valley Restaurants, led guests through a cooking class to wrap up this day of connection and wellness with a delicious home-cooked meal. In Remembrance

Char Corbit (1942-2020) Char had an enormous impact on our council, and was a dear friend to many staff, volunteers, and girls. Char Corbit began her story with Girl Scouts of Utah in the fifth grade, when she found a perfect way to embrace her love of the outdoors and her outgoing spirit. She was given the gift of a campership and was able to attend Trefoil Ranch, and her Girl Scout story continued throughout her life. Char was a Girl Scout troop leader before being hired by GSU in 1977. She served as director of outdoor programs, director of fund development, interim CEO, director of property, and oversaw the reconstruction of both GSU camps. She retired in 2010, after 33 years at Girl Scouts of Utah. In her time with GSU, Char watched three generations of Girl Scouts come through the GSU camps, and thousands of girls whose lives were changed through the Girl Scout programs. When asked about her retirement, Char said, “Working for Girl Scouts ceased to be a job for me about 20 years ago. It’s a lifestyle.” “Char was an amazing person who touched so many people during her remarkable life,” said Lisa Hardin-Reynolds, Girl Scouts of Utah CEO. “Char was my mentor, teacher, and friend, who taught me how to be a Girl Scout. I can honestly say my life has been changed because I was lucky enough to have Char in my life. She was instrumental in generations of girls’ lives, and made such an incredible impact on everyone she met. Char truly embodied being a Girl Scout, as she believed in diversity and inclusion, led by example, and loved everyone unconditionally. She created lifelong connections and friends for life. Anyone lucky enough to know her shared her enthusiasm for life and Girl Scouts.” Learn more about the Char Corbit Campership Fund

Constance “Connee” Gates (1931-2020) Constance “Connee” Gates was a Girl Scout alum and lifelong volunteer, with more than 50 years with Girl Scouts. A former board member, she served as Board Chair for four years. A tree will be planted in her honor at Trefoil Ranch. To donate in honor of Connee Gates, select “This gift is in honor, memory, or support of someone” as you make your donation.
