Welcome Leslie Egan, new Girl Scouts of Utah Board Chair! Leslie was appointed as GSU’s new Board Chair on April 27, 2019 after previously serving on the Board of Directors. Leslie, a native Utahan and mother of eight boys, graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in social work. For the last eight years, she has volunteered in afterschool programs for refugee children. While volunteering in these programs, Leslie was astounded by “the strength and resilience of the children, who had often lived in several refugee camps while fleeing violence from their home country, before finding refuge in Utah.”

Girl Scouts offers experiences that open up a world of possibilities for a girl’s future success.

Leslie believes Girl Scouts benefits all girls, by offering new adventures and opening them up to a whole world of possibilities, and would like to say to all refugee Girl Scouts, “Welcome to America. You can achieve everything you want here.” Leslie’s passion and commitment to serving girls in Utah will certainly be an asset to Girl Scouts of Utah and we are thrilled to welcome her as our new Board Chair.

As she continued to interact with the children, she noticed how much the girls enjoyed having a mentor and participating in activities in an all-girl environment. Leslie commented, “sounds like Girl Scouts, right? That’s exactly what I thought!” So, she got involved with the Girl Scouts of Utah Board of Directors in hopes of bringing Girl Scouts programming to more Utah refugees. When reflecting on her time with Girl Scouts so far, Leslie said, “I have learned so much already and have seen what an outstanding outreach program is available for all girls, regardless of any socioeconomic concerns. I was thrilled to see refugee troops go to camp, attend a STEM fair, and lead the flag ceremony at a World Refugee Day celebration, a skill they learned here in Girl Scouts.”

Remembering a beloved Girl Scout Nancy Lipman Giles July 31, 1937 – May 5, 2019 Nancy was born and raised in Utah. She attended the University of Utah and after graduation, she married the love of her life, Clark Giles. Nancy and Clark both generously gave their time, talents, and financial support to Girl Scouts of Utah. Nancy’s service to Girl Scouts of Utah began when she was a young woman and continued to grow throughout the years. She worked at Girl Scouts of Utah, and later served two separate terms as Board Chair. Nancy was a continuous ambassador for our programs and outdoor properties. During her terms as Board Chair, she secured funding for the council resource center, and was instrumental in fundraising for the capital campaign to rebuild Camp Cloud Rim. In addition, Nancy supported Girl Scouts of Utah at the Annual Town Club Tea, where all proceeds continue to support Camperships. A self-described “full-time volunteer,” Nancy never hesitated to devote her time, talents, and resources generously to good causes, often in leadership roles. She personified the spirit of volunteerism and always sought to help others in need. In the late 90’s Nancy was instrumental in spearheading the fundraising of three million dollars for the rebuilding of Cloud Rim Lodge. In 2011, Nancy was honored as a Girl Scout of Utah Distinguished Alumni. Nancy enriched the lives of all those around her, bringing kindness, joy, humor, and fun to family and friends alike. She embodied the Girl Scout Promise and Law throughout her life. She exemplified being “honest and fair, friendly and helpful” and “considerate and caring,” and she certainly made the world a better place. Nancy was laid to rest in May and in lieu of flowers, contributions were made in Nancy’s memories to the organizations she cared deeply about, including Girl Scouts of Utah.

Celebrating another amazing Girl Scout cookie year! This June, Girl Scouts from all over Utah celebrated a successful 2019 cookie season together. Girls who sold 300 packages of cookies or more were invited to a Cookie Party at Cowabunga Bay Water Park on Saturday, June 1. The girls and their families had the chance to experience the water park with their Girl Scout sisters, shop at the GSU Mobile Pop-Up Shop, get a sneak peak of our 2020 cookie season, and meet our new CEO, Lisa Hardin-Reynolds, and Board Chair, Leslie Egan. On Saturday, June 8, girls who sold 1000 packages of cookies or more were invited to Lagoon for a celebratory luncheon and day at the amusement park. After spending the morning riding roller coasters and exploring the park, everyone gathered together for lunch and to celebrate the girls who sold 1000 packages of cookies or more. Each girl received a certificate recognizing the total number of packages of cookies she sold during the cookie season. The five girls who sold the most packages of cookies this season were presented with personalized jackets.
