New Visual Language - Research document

Masthead Noun: Also called nameplate. a line of type on the front page of a newspaper or the cover of a periodical giving the name of the publication. Experimentation: These are some of my inital rough sketches I created to get a feel for what I wanted my masthead to look like.

I then created a series of papet cut outs so I could visualise the positions that I wanted my masthead to be in. I then decided that I liked the idea of having the circle as it is quite modernist but I decided I wanted to keep the full New Visual Language title.

Final Masthead Design

After much type experimentation I decided to pick this type face- Walkway Black. I chose this as it is bold clean and easy to read. I also feel this masthead fits in well with the modernist theme.

Magazine Layouts As I am a big fan of Modernism but feel my work is more reminiscent of Postmodernism I felt that my magazine needed to have a mixture of both traits throughout. I explored many typefaces and layout styles from both art movements.

I wanted my magazine to have a clean fresh look about it but felt the plain coloured background was to simple and wasn’t quite the look i was going for.

Evaluation Firstly I would like to start by saying I am pleased with my overall outcome of my magazine. If I was to do it again I would definetely plan my time better as putting the publication together was more time consuming than I expected. I am extremely pleased with my typesetting skills as I feel my magazine looks tidy and set out well. If I was to do anything different I would look more at page backgrounds and how to set my images differently to make my work look more proffessional. Overall I feel I have achieved more than I expected with this magazine.
