Employer Feature
EMPLOYEE SAFETY DIVERSITY & INCLUSION How does your organisation promote employee diversity and inclusion in the workplace? Bank Islam's commitment to workforce diversity and inclusivity – of its BITIZENs (Bank Islam Citizens) – are promoted through our: • Employee value proposition of maximising potential, working with thought leaders of Islamic Finance, beyond work and life, and living the universally accepted good values. • Provision of a clear policy commitment on workforce diversity.
WORKPLACE CULTURE What makes your organisation's culture unique? Bank Islam upholds the Shariah principles that bring out virtuous traits among its BITIZENs. Our shared values, TAAT (Think Customer, Act with Integrity, Advance Beyond, Take Charge), unifies us. We foster a workplace that engenders the highest level of integrity and business ethics, encouraging BITIZENs to do the right thing at all times. We place our BITIZENs at the forefront of the bank's growth. The bank will continue to advance when our people grow. Hence, BITIZENs are at the
65
heart of our development programmes. We empower and encourage mutual trust and accountability to foster BITIZENs' growth. Working in a hightrust environment allows performance and productivity to thrive – when BITIZENs perform, the bank prosper.
BENEFITS What is the one benefit your organisation offers that keeps your employees happy? We believe our holistic approach to a balanced work-life brings out the best in our employees and motivates them to work, translating into higher performance and sustainable business results. We prioritise creating an excellent employee experience through consistent and authentic communications. In our Employee Engagement Survey 2020, 83% of BITIZENs feel inspired to do their best work every day. Our ongoing initiatives range from enhancing employee's physical and mental wellbeing by reinventing our workplace to place people first, where performance is measured by the outcome and not output, to open-for-all learning opportunities. In particular, an upskilling programme in digital skills and new ways of working so they can move onwards and upwards with the bank's digital transformation journey.

What steps does your organisation take to ensure employee safety during the covid pandemic? We introduced a remote-working policy before the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the pandemic. Our BITIZENs are already opting to work from the safety of their home before the outbreak declaration. In addition, Bank Islam established a COVID-19 Task Force two weeks before the announcement of MCO 1.0. They oversee the implementations of safety measures and strict adherence to SOPs at all our premises – be it at the bank's headquarters, Menara Bank Islam in Kuala Lumpur or all our 144 branches in the country. The workforce required to work-inoffice must plan and submit their work week plans for tracking and ensuring adherence to SOPs. During this challenging period, we practise clear and concise communications to all staff frequently. Leaders exercised a high level of understanding, setting clear expectations among their teams to ensure that everyone can discharge their duties effectively from the safety of their home or at the office when required.

Using a variety of frameworks – such as the EY Diversity & Inclusiveness (D&I) Culture Change Roadmap, the EY Global D&I Tracker report and the EY Workplace Behavior Guidelines, to name a few – we develop practical solutions to create a sense of belonging for all and to champion inclusive causes that positively impact D&I in society. How does your organisation promote employee diversity and inclusion in the workplace?
What makes your organisation's culture unique?
Diversity and inclusion go beyond celebrating different festivities or granting ‘festive leaves’. For us, it’s about supporting and empowering different employee groups, whether they are working mothers, retirees, even those with impairments and special needs so that everyone has an equal chance at success. Although we do organise fun activities for staff to celebrate diversity within Great Eastern, we set the baseline for diversity and inclusion through the various HR policies that we implement in the organisation. For instance, in recruitment, we are committed to Equal Employment Opportunity, and all qualified applicants will receive fair and equal consideration for employment. Only by formulating policies that prioritise diversity and inclusion are we able to create a truly diverse and inclusive workplace.
69
Our core values – Integrity, Initiative, and Involvement – are what guide us in what we do. We are reminded to do the right thing, take the lead, and choose ‘we’ over ‘me’. When a group of people acts and lives out the same values in their daily lives, they achieve collective success, and the organisation thrives as a result, even in the harshest environment. That’s why at Great Eastern Life Malaysia, we are a big family moving together as one, and what truly makes us GREAT is our people.

EMPLOYEE SAFETY What steps does your organisation take to ensure employee safety during the covid pandemic? Like many organisations, we have taken stringent approaches to ensure our employees’ safety during the pandemic such as providing reusable facemasks and hand sanitisers for those who are required to work in the office. Of course, it is best to stay at home, which is why we enabled work-from-home for the majority of our employees at Great Eastern Life Malaysia. This is a big step for us but we believe remote work is here to stay and as such, we do our best to ensure the necessary support and resources are available for our people to work from home effectively. This includes setting up the necessary tools and infrastructure such as virtual platforms and revamping hard-copy processes to fully online.

EMPLOYEE SAFETY What steps does your organisation take to ensure employee safety during the covid pandemic? At the early start of the pandemic, we were quick to form a Crisis Response Team (CRT) who are in charge of all COVID-19 related matters. To ensure the safety of our people, only 30% of staff are allowed to work from the office whilst the rest worked from home. Before entering office premises, all staff and guests are required to submit health declaration forms indicating that they are not at risk of COVID. Frequent sanitation is done at every level, whilst strict monitoring of social distancing is performed. Additionally, our staff receives monthly supplies of masks and sanitisers regardless of where they are stationed for work. Through these trying times, our values – Together, For Better – remain at the heart of our response.

It also reminded us to future proof our careers, enable greater flexibility in ways of working and make use of

available technologies. With that, we continuously engage our stakeholders and act on their feedback when implementing our people agenda. The recent Maybank Employee Engagement Survey (EES) was conducted to find out the level of engagement and willingness of our employees to perform and contribute to the success of Maybank in this next normal. This notion ensures that the thoughts, feelings and needs of Maybankers are taken into account, alongside the operational and financial requirements of the organisation.
BENEFITS What is the one benefit your organisation offers that keeps your employees happy? We had more than 80% of staff working from home from the usual 80% on-site. WHAT DOES MCMC LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT CULTURE LOOK LIKE? MCMC affirms the need for structured talent development to support the execution of the talent bench strength strategy. Concurrent use of skills and competencies enhances employee development by helping them advance towards their career goals (illuminated by skills) and helping employees improve against performance expectations for their current or future roles (associated with competencies). Furthermore, to build an effective Commission that drives results and fosters successful teams, it is key to enhance the leadership bench strength. Developing leadership bench strength is also a key driver for succession planning in the Commission. Thus, leadership development programmes such as the Accelerated Leadership Programme Series (ALPs), All Star and E-Series have taken the lead in our quest.

An integrated talent assessment and profiling framework has been put in place to measure, monitor and report for an informed decision-making on career mobility. Our ultimate aim is to cultivate an agile workforce that is achievement-oriented and capable to adapt to the changing business needs and evolving organisational goals. One such example is the identification of high potential talents for fast track growth. Job architecture is constantly evolving. We have had generalists, specialists and now, we turn to possible “craftspeople”. Hence, there is downstream impact on the team structure and process. Continuous learning is essential to address the evolvements. Job person match is undertaken to explore an individual’s potential through personal development plans. Some notable development pillars are functional mastery, sharpening one’s business acumen, embodying critical behaviours
(based upon MCMC core competencies) and development of leaders through digital leadership continuum. Other learning opportunities include on-the-job training, coaching and mentoring, project involvement, experiential learning through technical report presentations, cross-working assignments, contributions to the idea generating labs, speaking opportunities in tea talks, article publications and job rotations. Workforce resilience is the product of investing in the well-being of our employees, creating a working environment that allows people to adapt to adverse situations, manage stress and retain motivation. Therefore, MCMC is committed to tailoring the required work-life balance. In the areas of automation, digitalisation, analytics and process improvements, many new initiatives are being institutionalised to support the cause.

BENEFITS What is the one benefit your organisation offers that keeps your employees happy? Our people play various roles outside of work, having different needs and wants. For example, as parents, many of whom are working from home now have the added responsibility of managing children and their school work too. This is why we have flex+, under which the initiatives are designed to cater to people at various stages of their lives. Some of the initiatives include: • flexTime – choose when to start and end your workday • flexCare – care for your immediate family members should an unfortunate event occurs • flexMum – mothers with newborns can opt to use 30 out of the 90 days of their maternity leave, to be taken throughout the first year
Employer Feature
• flexBenefits – flexibility to claim your benefits in areas that are most relevant to you in different phases of life, such as wellbeing, personal development, fertility treatment etc. • flexMed – allows medical leave to be taken without needing to produce a medical chit • Vaccination leave – Our people get a day off for each vaccine dose. They may also take flexMed if they experience side effects, and flexCare if their immediate family members require help in receiving their vaccinations.
EMPLOYEE SAFETY What steps does your organisation take to ensure employee safety during the covid pandemic? Since the start of the pandemic, our people have been instructed to work from home (WFH). They are only allowed to access the office if it is absolutely necessary, and they must follow the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) strictly. Furthermore, we also monitor the situation closely and ensure that regular communication is sent out to inform our people of the latest updates on COVID-19, while emphasising WFH guidelines, based on government SOPs, to ensure their safety and well-being.

Furthermore, Samsung Malaysia Electronics is always respectful of these celebrations, striving to understand that employees have different needs that may require flexibility. It is our motto that no one gets left behind.
The one thing that Samsung takes immense pride in is how we invest in our people. We believe that it is our employees who facilitate change that benefits the business. One of the many ways we want to implement the latter is through our on-the-go learning platform called Samsung U. With Samsung U, employees get to design their own learning plan that fits their career aspirations. To cultivate belongingness, we rolled out our Great Workplace initiatives that cover an array of topics, from taking care of our mental wellbeing to celebrating major festive seasons in Malaysia. These initiatives do not stop during the pandemic. We have moved our activities virtually to support our employees remotely. Additionally, we supplement these activities with our Proud to Own campaign which includes exclusive discounts and launch passes for our employees.
EMPLOYEE SAFETY What steps does your organisation take to ensure employee safety during the covid pandemic? While the pandemic has severely affected the orthodox way of working, Samsung Malaysia Electronics strongly believes that our employees’ safety is our priority. With that, a new way of working to support the future of work was put in place so that we can continue to give our employees the close collaboration and connection they craved, balanced with the flexibility needed to be working remotely. Whether through our efficient internal meeting platform, convenient communication portal or daily COVID-19 updates, we ensured that both leaders and their teams are prepared in practical and attainable ways for remote working.

M100 provides us with the platform to show potential recruits our unique quality as the first Islamic bank with an unparalleled network of Islamic Banking channels in Malaysia. We uphold Shariah principles that bring out virtuous traits among our employees. To be listed as Malaysia’s top 100 graduate employer and the opportunity to be featured in M100 demonstrate Bank Islam's commitment as an organisation that prioritises the growth of its employees. We believe the Bank will continue to grow when our people grow with the Bank.

How does your organisation remain relevant as a top-of-mind employer amongst students? How do you communicate your organisation’s EVPs to such a young audience? EVP can be a foreign acronym to those outside the job market, especially amongst the students. Being millennials and Gen Zs born in the digital era, these students are digital natives. To effectively communicate with them, we leverage their digital habits such as using social media
gradmalaysia MALAYSIA’S 100 Leading Graduate Employers 2020/21
platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, etc.) to interact and tell our stories and values as an organisation. We also showcase what life is like as employees of Bank Islam to attract these young talents. The young audience is also very comfortable interacting with us digitally or virtually. Without the limitation of time and distance of traditional career events, we can reach out to a more significant demographic of the young audience.

What are your organisation’s ambitions for the M100 in 2021 and beyond? We aspire to remain as one of Malaysia’s top 100 leading graduate employers in the industry as we grow to become the leading Islamic Bank in Malaysia. As the first Islamic financial institution in Malaysia, Bank Islam had achieved many firsts since its inception 38 years ago: • The first issuance of Islamic Sukuk in Malaysia • The first involvement in the digitalisation of the bail payment process in Malaysia's judiciary system (eJamin) • The country's first microfinance facility funded by sadaqah (donation) called BangKIT.
Speaking in terms of professional development, what can a fresh grad hire expect when they walk into your organisation’s doors? We encourage our people to step outside of their comfort zones. We prepare them for continuous growth in their career with Bank Islam. Every employee's development needs are assessed, gaps are identified and addressed with suitable training. Our employees’ professional growth is balanced with the Soft Skills and Technical Skills development programme that they can get from blended learning modules. From the start, Bank Islam's new employees are equipped with knowledge fundamental to their career through a series of training on basic knowledge of Islamic banking and finance. This is to provide them with the competency to excel in their current roles and develop them for future roles.
Our ambition is not only to be recognised for our financial strengths but also through our efforts in ensuring support to the economy, community empowerment and environmental protection.

What is your main challenge as a graduate recruiter in our pandemic times? How do you strive to overcome it? We always believe in silver linings, we view the pandemic as a blessing in disguise. The young graduates' nature as digital natives works to our advantage in this current situation where interactions and communications are mainly done via digital technology. Time and distance are not an issue as we can now connect with talents from anywhere around the world, as long as there's an internet connection. Furthermore, it is more time and cost-efficient to conduct recruitment activities virtually now. Technology allows us to do more with less, such as having more value-added interaction sessions with students and career development programmes (e.g., our Young Leaders Programme aimed towards developing future leaders in Bank Islam).

What is your main challenge as a graduate recruiter in our pandemic times? How do you strive to overcome it? The pandemic has certainly changed the way we recruit as we typically connect and engage with graduates at physical career fairs, office visits and campus roadshows where we can have engaging in-person interactions. To overcome these challenges, we have pivoted to digital platforms and have been working closely with universities to host virtual workshops, learning programmes, lectures and sharing sessions for the students, where we stress the importance of investing in future skills and regularly acquiring and using new knowledge and skills to stay relevant.
Speaking in terms of professional development, what can a fresh grad hire expect when they walk through your organisation’s doors? At EY, we pride ourselves on having a collaborative environment and an inclusive culture. We have a friendly work environment, with highly approachable and supportive colleagues and leaders. We empower our people to take on early responsibility and encourage them to seek new challenges. We assign them challenging and meaningful work that helps develop their skills and knowledge. We expose them to a wide variety of experiences that allow them to learn and progress more quickly. We also provide our people with a clear career continuum and the opportunity for career development and advancement. Fresh grads can expect to benefit from comprehensive training programmes that are structured around experiences, learning and coaching. As a highly integrated global organisation, we have mobility programmes that are open to our highest-performing people. They can experience working with people from different countries and cultures as part of their everyday job. EY also prioritises the health and wellbeing of its people and has various programmes dedicated to maintaining good wellbeing. Our ‘MYWellbeing’ initiative covers physical and mental health, flexibility programmes, and family and community activities to help our people balance their work and personal lives. The knowledge, skills and experience that our people gain equip them to take on new or added responsibilities. All these, together with the relationships and networks that they build while in EY, will last a lifetime. What is your main challenge as a graduate recruiter in our pandemic times? How do you strive to overcome it? The most prominent challenge is identifying the right talents who are equipped with the affinity to work remotely. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about a paradigm shift in our ways of working. While the culture at KPMG remains working collaboratively, the very concept of working remotely has posed a greater challenge, particularly on graduates without any professional experience. The loss of personal touch has made the process of talent identification more challenging as interviews and career fairs are all now performed virtually. To combat this challenge, we have taken it upon ourselves to groom these fresh graduates to become better prepared at transitioning into the corporate world through various futureproofing workshops conducted alongside university faculties, professional bodies, and student associations.
What are your organisation’s ambitions for the M100 in 2021 and beyond?
Speaking in terms of professional development, what can a fresh grad hire expect when they walk into your organisation’s doors? Working at KPMG is as challenging as it is rewarding and fulfilling. We strive towards a shared purpose of Inspiring Confidence and Empowering Change. This means we practise a culture of trust, empowerment, and openness. Furthermore, we encourage two-way communication between top management and our people. Aside from our annual Town Halls, we also have regular Coffee Sessions for our people to engage with top leaders discussing trending topics. We also constantly provide training to our people – especially to new joiners – to ensure they are constantly improving their craft. After all, at KPMG we believe in Leading by Example; hence by getting to learn from and work alongside everyone surely helps to promote a culture of togetherness, as well.

Ultimately, we also aim to constantly improve our ranking as one of Malaysia’s leading graduate employers.

Speaking in terms of professional development, what can a fresh grad hire expect when they walk into your organisation’s doors? With the Bank accepting talents from diverse backgrounds, a fresh graduate can expect to learn to be multi-dimensional from day-today assignments to projects, scrums, gigs and constantly picking up new skills as they explore the world of Maybank. A suite of programmes is also made available to Maybankers such as certification courses, micro-learning programmes, international assignments (virtually for now) and mentor pairings, truly living up to how #LearningNeverStops for all in the Bank. Furthermore, personalised learning programmes with 24/7 access enable employees to learn anytime and anywhere. Continuous career conversations coupled with a customised Personal Development Plan (PDP) also ensure learning and development are always at the heart of every conversation. Most importantly, we want talents to be able to learn, unlearn and relearn to stay current and get ahead as Maybank recognises that every individual is different – we all learn and develop differently.
What are your organisation’s ambitions for the M100 in 2021 and beyond? Our ambition is to be recognised as the leading graduate programme employer in Malaysia and across the region. Most importantly, it is vital that we bridge the gap between employers and fresh graduates as we believe that they play an integral part in any organisation. We will continue providing more opportunities for graduates and students by equipping them with useful knowledge and the necessary networks that they can utilise in the working world. We also aim to retain our position as Malaysia’s No.1 Graduate Employer of the Year, continue being the top-ofmind employer for fresh graduates and at the same time, grow our organisation with fresh perspectives, ideas and talent.

What is your main challenge as a graduate recruiter in our pandemic times? How do you strive to overcome it? The main challenge is the current limitation on genuine human connections between employers and potential hires as recruitment now has transitioned into a virtual setting. As effective as virtual interviews may be, this method can still put a barrier between both parties and limit the ability to create honest and genuine connections. With that, we constantly seek innovative ways to transition by creating new but similar or better experiences online that would overcome these challenges, and be able to spark the connection regardless of a physical or online engagement. This is why at Maybank, we have engagements such as #DefytoDefine, MFest, M-Dash, and many more. malaysias100.com

What is your main challenge as a graduate recruiter in our pandemic times? How do you strive to overcome it? We have been leveraging technology for several years now, as part of our interview and onboarding process. Hence, we have been very much agile in our approach and experienced minimum disruption even during this pandemic. Specifically, during these times, our focus has been on educating candidates and interviewers to adapt to the new norm in the recruitment journey. Interestingly, we observed a trend of an extremely high volume of job applications in every open role, especially since the beginning of 2021. What we are doing differently is ensuring that we rely on the digital platform in engaging, managing the huge volume of applications and shortlisting the right talent in a timely manner. While this is not considered the main challenge, it is about how we are being increasingly agile in adapting to the current needs.
What are your organisation’s ambitions for the M100 in 2021 and beyond? We simplify Top Glove's EVP into bite-sized information that students can digest and understand. Our corporate values, business ethics and corporate culture are all made to be easy to understand and recall.
Speaking in terms of professional development, what can a fresh grad hire expect when they walk into your organisation’s doors? In Top Glove, formal training programmes are offered, which means there are plenty of opportunities to learn and flourish. This is exceptionally beneficial for fresh graduates as they can join classes and training to further improve themselves even after their studies. Due to the diversity of the roles available in our company, youths will be able to make lateral moves or aim for different positions. These made up for a wider prospect for internal career advancement. The easy-access education is also available at one's fingertips, from virtual workshops to e-learning. The best part about this training is that you have complete control over it. To support our corporate Vision and Mission, Top Glove also provides professional progression possibilities for our workers and encourages innovation and entrepreneurial ideas. We are committed to ensuring that all individuals are treated equally in terms of employment and professional advancement, with all merits, talents, and abilities taken into account.
What is your main challenge as a graduate recruiter in our pandemic times? How do you strive to overcome it? The main challenge that we faced is that we cannot organise any physical talent engagement activities such as physical career fairs, open days, student tours, career talks, etc. Henceforward, we evolved with digitalisation by conducting career fairs, student tours and career talks virtually. Despite facing the pandemic, we are able to grow and prosper through the challenges.
What are your organisation’s ambitions for the M100 in 2021 and beyond? We are driven to pursue to be in the top 10 of M100 Awards under the categories that we have participated in. Subsequently, we also strive to continuously improve ourselves to become a better organisation.
