ALDERNEY CHRISTMAS STAMPS GUERNSEY CHRISTMAS STAMPS ALDERNEY HOMECOMING STORIES FROM THE GREAT WAR: PART 2

www.guernseystamps.com

Welcome Welcome to the July issue of our Stamp Bulletin. We are just back from a very busy Europhilex exhibition in London and it was great to see some new faces amongst the familiar faces too. We now have two new Post & Go B-Series overprints available from both the Essen and Europhilex 2015 exhibitions - further details are available in this bulletin. The tiny Channel Island of Sark celebrates 450 years as a Fief to the Crown this year. From dragon slaying to pirates and gold mines the fascinating history of Sark is brought to life with a beautifully illustrated set of stamps and miniature sheet.

Alderney: Anne French Stained Glass Windows NEW ISSUE: Set of seven stamps: ÂŁ3.99 Issue date: 6th November 2015

Christmas is the perfect time to help other people. At this time of year, our thoughts may turn to helping others less fortunate than ourselves. For our Alderney Christmas stamps we have chosen to focus on someone who dedicated her life to helping children. Through her unwavering support and work with children in Alderney and overseas, Anne French epitomises the true meaning of Christmas. Our stamps feature some of the scenes from a special window dedicated to her in 1957, which can be found in St. Anne’s church in Alderney. The Anne French window is a reflection of her charity work with children in the island and in countries such as Africa and Burma.

Our stamps feature some of the scenes from a special window dedicated to her in 1957, which can be found in St. Anne’s church in Alderney. The Anne French window is a reflection of her charity work with children in the island and in countries such as Africa and Burma. Today, there are many successful charity campaigns which garner support for those in crisis around the world, resulting in donations and vital aid reaching countries which have been torn apart due to wars, famine, disease and natural disasters. Shoeboxes full of toys, books and clothes can be sent to children in Africa, India and the Philippines. Shoeboxes full of toys, books and clothes can be sent to children in Africa, India and the Philippines. Donations to provide food, clothing and toys enables families to experience some of the joy of the Christmas season. You can even donate money that pays for a flock of chickens for a famine struck village, buy a blackboard for a village school or a bicycle for a midwife in Cambodia - the options really are endless. In the true spirit of Christmas we can share our good fortune not just with friends and family, but by thinking about ways to support those in need at home and overseas that really need our help.

Guernsey: William Morris Stained Glass Windows NEW ISSUE: Set of seven stamps: £3.99 Issue date: 6th November 2015

‘Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.’ These are the famous words of William Morris (1834-1896), considered by many to be the greatest designer and one of the outstanding figures of the Arts and Crafts Movement. In 1861, with a group of friends, Morris started the decorating business Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. - Morris & Co. - which initially concentrated on stained glass and other ecclesiastical arts for church decoration, such as those depicted on our Christmas stamps. The firm began to appear at international exhibitions and receive awards, including for its stained glass and furniture at the 1862 International Exhibition. In 1867 Morris & Co. was asked to decorate the Green Dining Room at the South Kensington Museum (now the Victoria and Albert Museum), and the Tapestry Room and Armoury at St. James’ Palace - both notable commissions which secured the future of the business. Thanks to Morris’ drive and enthusiasm, the company’s output was significant. Whilst being credited with reviving many of the traditional arts which has disappeared with industrialisation, Morris is probably best known for his wallpaper and fabric designs. Regardless of what form his art took he is known to have mastered each craft; painstakingly learning each stage of the hand making process and understanding his materials so he could yield the best results.

William Morris died on 3rd October 1896, aged 62. He is buried in the churchyard near his favourite home, Kelmscott Manor, in Gloucestershire.

First Day Cover: £5.19

Morris’ legacy continues today with Morris & Co. producing authentic versions of his original designs alongside new interpretations translated into fabrics and wallpapers. In 2011, the firm celebrated its 150th anniversary with a new collection of archive based products including fabrics and surfaceprinted wallpapers, together with new designs inspired by the life and work of William Morris and his artistic circle.

Alderney: 70th Anniversary of Homecoming NEW ISSUE: Miniature Sheet: £3.00 Issue date: 10th November 2015

During the Second World War, the Channel Islands were the only part of the British territory to be occupied by the Germans. In June 1940 almost the entire population of the island of Alderney was evacuated. Most of the 1,500 residents left on official evacuation boats sent from mainland Britain. When the German troops arrived in Alderney they found it virtually deserted. Following Hitler’s instructions they set to work fortifying the island to form part of his ‘Atlantic Wall’. Four concentration camps were built, and forced labour was used to build bunkers, gun emplacements and air-raid shelters. The war raged on, until eventually, after almost five years, the Germans finally surrendered Alderney on May 16th, 1945, seven days after the liberation of sister islands Guernsey and Jersey and eight days after the Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Nazi Germany and the end of Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich. On the return to their island, Alderney evacuees had little or no knowledge of what had happened on their tiny island, some of the evidence however was clear to see, with vast concrete fortifications and graves marking the numerous prisoners who had perished there. Many of the island’s buildings were completely derelict due to the fact that anything wooden, including front doors, had been burned for fuel during the desperate times.

www.guernseystamps.com

Over two thousand German prisoners of war were removed from Alderney on 20th May 1945, leaving around 500 Germans to undertake clearing up operations under British military supervision. For two years after the end of World War II, Alderney was operated as a communal farm. Craftsmen were paid by their employers, whilst others were paid out of the profit from the sales of farm produce. Remaining profits were put aside to repay the British Government for repairing and rebuilding the island.

Stories from the Great War Part 2 NEW ISSUE: Set of six stamps: £3.62 Issue date: 11th November 2015 For issue two of our five stamp sets commemorating the Great War, we wanted to build on the stories that we began last year with a focus on the role that the Post Office played in keeping Bailiwick residents in touch with their loved ones abroad.

Once again we have featured individual islanders who served in the conflict and this set sees the inclusion of a Sark resident, Philip Carré, who left his home and his duties as the island’s postman to volunteer in the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry (RGLI). Many of his family members still live in Sark, including his great grandson Simon who is one of the island’s postmen today. His story has parallels with that of Robert Bynam, the grandfather of long-serving Guernsey Post Head of Network Planning, Dave Bynam. Robert, was a postman when War broke out having started as a telegram boy at the age of 14 and, like Philip, he also fought with the RGLI. Thankfully both men returned from the War to raise families and both continued their work as postmen until they reached retirement.

Many of the servicemen who came home either rejoined or began working for the postal service and it is easy to understand how its sense of duty, structure and solidarity was reassuringly familiar to men who had spent time in the armed forces.

This issue features several items of WWI postal memorabilia including a Field Service Post Card that was sent home by Private Yves Cataroche (who was in our 2014 commemorative issue) and a Christmas card sent home by Lieutenant Peter Le Page. Head of Philatelic, Dawn Gallienne, explains: “These items were brought to us by family members when we put out a request to the public in 2013 and such authentic details have really helped to bring the stories to life. “We are very grateful to all those who have come forward to share their family histories with us.”
