YEAR OF THE RAT - 250TH ANNIVERSARY OF BEETHOVEN PART 1 - ALDERNEY BIRDS - SEA LIFE IN THE RAMSAR AREA

www.guernseystamps.com

Welcome Welcome and happy New Year! We have an exciting stamp programme this year, which will provide all of our customers with something of interest and enjoyment. The Chinese New Year – The Year of the Rat is our first issue on the 8th January. The stamps have once again been designed by Chrissy Lau and feature accents of gold reflecting the belief, in Chinese culture, of the rat’s association with wealth, abundance and prosperity, as well as fertility and reproduction. On 21 January, we also release the first of our Quartet series to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven. He remains one of the most admired and influential composers who ever lived; an innovator who oversaw the transition of music from the Classical to the Romantic style, characterised by emotion and impact. Over the course of the year we will release four stamps culminating in October with the release of a souvenir sheet and prestige booklet.

to reveal that January 2020 will see a new set of sixteen stamps. Alderney Wildlife Trust have recorded approximately 284 species of birds including resident and rare passage migrants and this set of definitive stamps features a variety of those spotted regularly on or around the island. Alderney’s commemorative issue is a beautiful set depicting sealife in the Ramsar area. The island’s west coast and the Burhou islands were recognised as a wetland of international importance in 2005, becoming the first designated Ramsar site within the Bailiwick of Guernsey. Although there is no Stampex in February, we will be issuing our next Post & Go pictorial issue on the 12th February: a beautifully illustrated set featuring six fishing boats, which work out of the various bays and harbours in the Bailiwick of Guernsey. We hope you enjoy these issues and what our 2020 stamp programme offers.

It has been over 12 years since we have issued a definitive set of stamps for Alderney, and I’m excited

Customer Corner We celebrated our 50th Anniversary of Postal Independence in October and we would like to thank everyone who sent in their best wishes. Here are just a couple of cards we received.

We received an email from a customer highlighting that our automatic web order email receipts contained a lot of details about the customer. After reviewing this we agreed that the receipts were not in line with GDPR so we have updated them. As such, you will now only see your name, philatelic account number and purchase details.

We welcome feedback on any part of our service, so if you have any suggestions or comments on how we could improve our service we would be happy to hear from you.

2020 the Rat Year of

GUERNSEY

We are delighted to release our seventh set of stamps celebrating the Chinese New Year and, specifically, the Year of the Metal Rat 2020, created once again by Sydney based artist, Chrissy Lau. According to the Chinese zodiac, known as Sheng Xiao, each Chinese New Year is characterised by one of 12 animals, being based on a 12-year cycle in line with the Chinese lunar calendar. The first animal in the cycle is the rat. People born in the Year of the Rat are said to be instinctive and alert in nature. They react well to situations; they handle themselves well during social interactions with others; and, they are confident and very adaptable. However, they can also be shy, stubborn, fastidious and critical. [pull out section] Lucky Rats • Colours: blue, gold, green • Numbers: 2, 3 • Flowers: lily, African violet, valley lily • Favourable directions: southeast, northeast • Favourable directions of wealth: southeast, east • Favourable directions of love: west Unlucky Rats • Colours to avoid: yellow, brown 66 Year of the Rat 2020 • Unlucky numbers: 5, 9

Did you know? According to one myth, the 12 animals of the zodiac quarrelled as to who was to head the cycle of years. The gods were asked to decide and said that the animals would be ranked according to the order in which they reached the opposite bank of the river. The animals gathered at the river and jumped in. Unknown to the ox, the rat had jumped on his back. As the ox was about to jump ashore, the rat jumped off the ox’s back and won the race. Other recent years of the Rat are: 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, and 2008.

In celebration of Beethoven’s legacy, we will issue four stamps during 2020, each depicting the BTHVN logo, as well as a souvenir sheet, which will be issued on 28 October 2020 featuring the complete set of stamps.

We are delighted to mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of the highly acclaimed composer Ludwig van Beethoven, who was born in Bonn, Germany, in 1770. He is believed to be the most frequently performed classical music composer in the world – and certainly one of the most influential. The Beethoven Anniversary Society (BAS), a non-profit organisation and affiliate of Beethoven-Haus Bonn, was founded in 2016 to bring together an exciting programme of events in celebration of Beethoven’s 250th birthday. The BAS has created the logo ‘BTHVN’ to feature on worldwide stamps as part of the anniversary celebrations – an abbreviation said to have been used by Beethoven on some of his scores. The stamps: Stamp one: This depicts a large bronze statue of Beethoven, which stands on the Münsterplatz in Bonn, Beethoven’s birthplace. Issue date – 21 January 2020. BAILIWICK OF GUERNSEY

A bird’s eye view of Alderney’s feathered friends Alderney Bird Observatory (ABO) was founded in March 2016 by the Alderney Wildlife Trust to study bird migration and the island’s seabird colonies. Its HQ is based at ‘The Nunnery’, the oldest standing building in the Channel Islands and the best preserved Roman small fort in the British Isles. The Nunnery provides accommodation for visiting guests and their stay at the field centre not only helps support ABO’s work but also contributes towards the maintenance of this important heritage site. Just a year after it opened, ABO won top prize in the Guernsey Insurance Corporation Awards, a prestigious award for nature conservation. It was awarded a grant of £1500 which was used to purchase vital bird-ringing equipment including ringing nets, poles and nets. Since opening ABO’s research has confirmed that the island is a major flyway and one of the most exciting hotspots in Britain for seeing and monitoring birds in migration and nesting. Under the leadership of its warden, John Horton, local birders and those from further afield flock to spot species they might never get to see on mainland Britain. Alderney is a designated Ramsar site, with wetlands of international importance and the small uninhabited island of Burhou provides a refuge for threatened colonies of puffins and petrels and black-backed gulls. Ortac and Les Etacs are home to thousands of gannets. John and his team of volunteers work to ring migrant birds on passage as well as breeding seabirds; building up data used to help understand changes in movements of migrating birds as well as the effect that loss of habitat and global warming are having on the birds’ survival rates. John and the Alderney Bird Conservatory have featured on both BBC’s Countryfile, with Matt Baker, and Channel 4’s Little British Islands. In 2019 the Alderney Bird Observatory became Alderney Bird Observatory Trust Ltd, an independent and selfsupporting organisation.

Sealife in the Ramsar Area NEW ISSUE: Set of 6 stamps: £4.47

Issue date: 21 Januuary 2020

Alderney’s west coast and the Burhou Islands were recognized by the United Nations as wetlands of international importance in 2005, becoming the first designated Ramsar site in the Bailiwick of Guernsey. The site covers 1,500 hectares, bigger than mainland Alderney and includes the waters from the island’s west coast, including Burhou islet and the surrounding rocking reefs, to the rock of Les Etacs, 100m from the coastline. The rocks of Les Etacs and Ortac are home to nearly 6,000 and 2,800 pairs of Northern Gannets respectively during the breeding season, equating to >1% of the world population. The site is managed by the Alderney Wildlife Trust, on behalf of the States of Alderney, with other groups/ organisations supporting the work. Its designation ensures it is gently managed, conserving and maintaining its ecological character, diverse habitats, flora and fauna and protecting it for future generations. The site has 5-year strategic plans and annual action plans ratified by the States of Alderney, detailing works throughout the year monitoring habitats and key species including Northern gannets, European storm-petrels, Atlantic puffins, grey seals, lesser backed gulls, great black backed gulls, ormers and seaweed species – to name but a few. The Trust collates, analyses and reports all the results back to the States and as Secretariat for the site, is also responsible for updating the Ramsar Information Sheet – a document detailing key information about the site which is submitted to The Ramsar Convention. Daniele Clifford, Ramsar Officer for Alderney Wildlife Trust explains, “Since its designation, the species list has grown. This year we have recorded spotted cowries, a lot of large brittle stars and native oysters.” “We are also completing a new habitat map for Clonque Bay and have recorded a couple of new habitats since the last survey in 2014.” “Unfortunately, we are also seeing more invasive species in the site and these are a very real threat as they can outcompete native species. We have identified Asian shore crabs within the site and are monitoring their presence. We continue to lookout for species which haven’t been recorded in the Ramsar site before and encourage the public to add to their sightings to our records book.”
