GUERNSEY: SANTA’S VISIT 2020- ALDERNEY: SANTA’S VISIT 2020 - ST ANNE’S CHURCH - 250TH BEETHOVEN PART 4

www.guernseystamps.com

Welcome Welcome to the autumn bumper edition of our Bulletin. It has certainly been a strange year, with the global pandemic having a huge impact on everyone, and it still continues to affect us in many ways. Autumn Stampex is a casualty of these unusual times however the PTS are hosting an online Virtual Exhibition during October, and we are delighted to confirm that Guernsey Stamps will be present supporting the philatelic community. From the 1st – 3rd October there will be a live chat forum for our customers and during this period we will be issuing a Virtual Stampex overprint on our GG02 Post & Go kiosk. These strips will be available to pre-order online and purchase via the bureau or direct online on our website. Our last stamp releases of the year include our two Christmas issues. Anyone who has visited Guernsey or Alderney during the festive season will have experienced the magical atmosphere and events, which take place around the island during December. Beautifully illustrated by local artist Steve Winstanley, both sets depict Santa visiting local amenities and landmarks around the islands.

Customer Corner

We also release the final stamp in our mini-series commemorating the 250th Anniversary of Beethoven along with a Souvenir Sheet and Prestige Booklet. Beethoven was an innovator who oversaw the transition of music from the Classical to the Romantic style, characterised by emotion and impact. Finally, we have a miniature sheet depicting the Church of St Anne. A special feature of the Church is the fact that it is home to a glorious peal of twelve ‘Taylor’ bells, the only peal of twelve bells in the Channel Islands. St Anne’s was consecrated in 1850 and celebrates its 170th anniversary in 2020; the church is known colloquially as the Cathedral of the Channel Islands and is acknowledged as one of the finest Victorian buildings in the Channel Islands. We hope that you are all keeping well and safe and have the opportunity to enjoy these new stamp issues.

CUSTOMS: The impact of the Coronavirus pandemic continues to affect us all in many ways. Over the last few months we have received feedback that customs have been holding up the delivery of packages. Germany, Switzerland, Malaysia, India and China seem to be the main countries intercepting items at this present time. We will continue to do our utmost to despatch orders in a manner not to be delayed by customs, but please ask you to bear with us in the event they are held up. ONLINE ORDERING: Over the last few months some internet browser platforms have been updated which has caused issues with our online ordering system. Unfortunately, this has resulted in duplicate orders and payments being made. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused due to this issue and believe we have now resolved the problem. We would like to assure you that we are continually looking to provide the best possible service we can via our online services and through our philatelic bureau. Thank you for your continued custom and patience.

Anyone who has visited Guernsey during the festive season will have experienced the magical atmosphere and events, which take place around the island during November and December. Without doubt, one of the most memorable events in Guernsey’s festive calendar is the Christmas lights switch on – an important job, which, for several decades, has been carried out by Santa, accompanied by his Chief Elf. Having arrived by lifeboat (depicted on our 45 pence stamp), Santa joins the annual festive parade where he is accompanied by many colourful fairy-tale characters. In recent years, Market Square (seen on our 70 pence stamp) in the island’s capital, St Peter Port, has provided the focal point for the celebrations and is where the crowds eagerly await the arrival of their VIP guest. Once the festive parade has arrived in Market Square, Santa appears on the balcony to wave to the crowds before switching on the Christmas lights, which shine against the beautiful cobbled streets. A few days later, Santa returns to the north of the island to switch on the lights at St Sampson. For the past 4 years, the St Peter Port Christmas Lights Charity has worked with Guernsey Post to raise the funds needed to keep the Christmas lights shining brightly in St Peter Port – something which is needed more than ever this year in light of the global pandemic. For this year’s appeal, the charity has already received a generous anonymous donation during the island’s lockdown period as a result of COVID-19. This has funded the much needed maintenance of some of the electrical wiring and also paid for replacement lights, meaning the charity can now focus on raising the additional £32,000 needed to cover the cost of putting the lights up and taking them back down.

ALDERNEY

A very merry and laid-back Christmas on Alderney This little island just three miles long by one and a half miles wide might be a little wetter and wilder in winter but Alderney gives the same warm welcome as any other time of the year. The most northerly and third largest Channel Island, Alderney provides a relaxing retreat and the perfect escape from the stresses of the festive season. Each retailer in Victoria Street in the quirky capital of St Anne gets into the spirit, showcasing their Christmas windows and enticing people in to shop for the perfect gift for their loved ones. Santa likes to make an appearance on Victoria Street too, handing out gifts to every child on the island. Meanwhile it’s become a Christmas tradition to join him and his helpers and ride the ‘Santa Special’ as the two 1959 London Northern Line Tube cars are pulled and pushed by ‘Elizabeth’, the diesel locomotive along the only working railway in the Channel Islands. Home-grown meat with all the trimmings and seasonal vegetables star on Christmas menus at the island’s restaurants, pubs and hotels and many offer a crackling fire and a glass of mulled wine – winter warmers that are just the ticket after a festive train ride or some Christmas shopping. Alderney is never lacking in entertainment and the locals certainly know how to get the party started with concerts, carol services and acoustic sessions in the run up to the big day. Alderney Wildlife Trust’s annual Boxing Day Walk is a great way to walk off the Christmas lunch and explore some of the island’s rejuvenated spots and historic sites and there’s mulled wine and home-made mince pies to finish. New Year’s Day heralds the annual ‘squirt and dip’ at Marais Square, an historic event hosted by the island’s volunteer fire service which sees firefighters arriving with their sirens blaring and squirting any child or adult they can find, whilst those brave enough are ‘dipped’ in the water at the Marais Square trough! A bracing swim in the sea at Braye Beach is another tradition which will clear most heads on New Year’s Day and see visitors resolving to come back soon to enjoy more of what the island has to offer!

St Anne’s Church NEW ISSUE: Miniature Sheet: £3.00 Issue date: 28th October 2020

St Anne’s Church is the Parish Church for the Channel Island of Alderney. The small, three miles square, island has a close and friendly community and the church is very much at the heart of all that goes on. Originally from Suffolk the Reverend Jan Fowler moved to Alderney in the summer of 2018 along with her husband and Associate Priest. 2020 marks the 170th anniversary of this parish church, sometimes referred to as the ‘Cathedral of the Channel Islands’ and we caught up with Reverend Fowler to find out a little more… Q: The Church of St Anne is a beautiful and large building, surrounded by grounds on all sides; but the island of Alderney has small population with just over 2000 people. What is the size of an average congregation? A: The church can comfortably accommodate up to 300 people and can be packed out for celebratory occasions such as weddings; but our average congregation for Sunday services is around 80 people. Q: Alderney is known as a tranquil holiday destination, do tourists visit the church? A: Yes, tourists do attend, both to view the church itself and also to take part in services.

www.guernseystamps.com

Many come to hear the very special peal of the 12 Taylor bells. Throughout the summer we have tourists and second homers almost every week. Q: Historic, beautiful and set in stunning location the Church of St Anne is a perfect wedding venue; how many marriage ceremonies usually take place each year? A: In a normal year roughly an average of 4 weddings take place. I had one ceremony with a dog as the ring bearer! Q: What interesting or unusual facts about St Annes Church can you share with us? A: The church has a large stained glass ‘Anne French window’. Anne French undertook many missionary journeys and the design of the window portrays children from Alderney alongside those from all over the world, including Burma where she and her husband carried out much charity work. Q: On a personal level, what do you like most about the church? A: The church is architecturally a significant building, but what I like best is that it is situated in the centre of Alderney and is the parish church in ‘the heart of the Island’.

250th Anniversary of Beethoven - Part 4 NEW ISSUE: Single stamp: £1.00 Issue date: 28 October 2020

£1 The stamps: -

Stamp 1 - issue date 21 January 2020 Stamp 2 - issue date 2 May 2020 Stamp 3 - issue date 21 July 2020 Stamp 4 - issue date 28 October 2020

We are delighted to mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of the highly acclaimed composer Ludwig van Beethoven, who was born in Bonn, Germany, in 1770. He is believed to be the most frequently performed classical music composer in the world – and certainly one of the most influential. The Beethoven Anniversary Society (BAS), a non-profit organisation and affiliate of Beethoven-Haus Bonn, was founded in 2016 to bring together an exciting programme of events in celebration of Beethoven’s 250th birthday. The BAS has created the logo ‘BTHVN’ to feature on worldwide stamps as part of the anniversary celebrations – an abbreviation said to have been used by Beethoven on some of his scores. In celebration of Beethoven’s legacy, we will issue four stamps during 2020, each depicting the BTHVN logo, as well as a souvenir sheet, which will be issued on 28 October 2020 featuring the complete set of stamps. The stamps: Stamp one: This depicts a large bronze statue of Beethoven, which stands on the Münsterplatz in Bonn, Beethoven’s birthplace. Issue date – 21 January 2020. Stamp two: German artist Josef Karl Stieler painted the composer with the manuscript of his solemn mass, Missa Solemnis, in 1820. The stamp also depicts Bonn Minster, a Roman Catholic Church in Beethoven’s birthplace. Issue date – 2 May 2020. Stamp three: The Beethoven monument was unveiled on 12 August 1845, in honour of the 75th anniversary of the composer’s birth. Bonn Minster again features as a backdrop. Issue date – 21 July 2020. Stamp four: A bust of the great composer by German sculptor Hugo Hagen is depicted on the fourth stamp. The bust is based on a life mask by Franz Klein, completed in 1812 when Beethoven was 42, which can be seen in the Beethoven Museum in Vienna. Issue date – 28 October 2020.
