APRIL 2021 VOL 11 No 13
EUROPA: ENDANGERED NATIONAL WILDLIFE - HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN’S 95TH BIRTHDAY UN: INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF FRUITS & VEGETABLES
www.guernseystamps.com
Welcome Welcome to our second bulletin of 2021 and the release of three new issues in April. Due to new postal rates being introduced on the 7 April and the requirement of Post Offices to have EUR & ROW 100g letter rate stamps both the Alderney and Guernsey issues will include two additional stamps.
Finally, on the 21st April we celebrate the 95th Birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with six stamps depicting key aspects of the life of Her Majesty, who is the longest-reigning monarch in British history. This special issue, Devoted to your Service, is a collaboration between 11 postal administrations, which sees four Crown Dependencies – Guernsey, Jersey, the Isle of Man and Gibraltar – become part of a co-ordinated collection along with several overseas territories and the Commonwealth of The Bahamas. With this issue we will also be offering a sheetlet which features one stamp from each participating country - a great collector’s item, one not to be missed.
Guernsey will release the Endangered Wildlife issue which is the 2021 Europa themed stamps. This issue depicts eight species found in the Bailiwick that are locally registered from critically endangered through to near threatened. The stamps feature the wonderful work of Wendy Bramall, an artist who has lived in Guernsey and now resides in the South West of England.
Please note we have had a small revision to our stamp calendar with the addition of a new Postcrossing set along with a few changes to issue dates and themes. Please see the revised stamp calendar on the right hand page.
We are also delighted to celebrate the International Year of Fruits & Vegetables with eight stamps from Alderney. These stamps have been beautifully illustrated by Guernsey-based artist, Petra Palmeri, a locsl doctor who excels in painting oil still life topics during her down time. The stamps feature a diverse selection of fruits including strawberries, physalis or Cape gooseberry, along with brightly coloured tomatoes, peas, onions and garlic.
We hope you are all safe and well during these challenging times and hope our stamps provide you with some enjoyable distractions away from the constant health threats we are experiencing. Best Wishes from Guernsey Stamps

Unfortunately, at the end of January, Guernsey returned to the lock down regime which many of you continue to face. This meant that we had no alternative but to operate with reduced staffing levels for several weeks, which has severely impacted our normal despatching targets for all orders, special instructions and general correspondence. We apologise for any inconvenience caused to those internet customers who had to wait longer than normal for their orders. We also apologise to all our standing order and mailing list customers that have had to wait longer than usual to receive the February new releases.

Consequently our April issue despatch may also be effected, however we will do our best to get these out to you as soon as we can. As always, we appreciate all customer feedback, as this provides the knowledge that our services are working correctly or provides us with an opportunity to improve areas that may not be.

We are delighted to mark the United Nations’ International Year of Fruits and Vegetables with eight stamps, which have been illustrated by Petra Palmeri, a General Practitioner and artist who lives in Guernsey. Petra has enjoyed recognition for some of her still life works in oils, which saw ‘Lemon Tree’ and ‘Physalis’ published in Artists and Illustrators, a leading magazine for practising artists. Another work completed in oil, ‘The Garden Strawberries’, has been published in The Artist magazine, and featured as the editor’s choice. Petra was also chosen as the winner of the Brian Pinero Terris trophy at Eisteddfod 2015, for her oil ‘Quinces’. Petra tells us that she discovered her passion for painting several years ago: “Although I’m a self-taught artist, I have been drawing for as long as I can remember. “I hold a particular interest in still life. I have experimented with several mediums - acrylics, pastels and watercolours, but I prefer to work with oils. “As a full time GP, I find my job rewarding yet stressful, and sometimes it can be a challenge to maintain positive energy at work. I find art is a great stress relief tool. Creating art takes my mind off of whatever is causing me stress as I am focused on creating. The world is stressed out by the coronavirus pandemic, and there has been a marked increase in anxiety and depressive disorders. I believe that art therapy can help: the skill level doesn’t matter; it is the enjoyment and creativity you derive from art that counts. Petra is a member of the local artist group Sarnia Arts and Crafts and has exhibited regularly with the group, as well as at the Coach House Gallery and Guernsey Picture Framer. She has also been involved with the Les Bourgs Hospice and Chest and Heart charities to raise funds. “Guernsey has wonderful artists and we appreciate each other’s work, as we all have very different styles,” Petra says. “It is a privilege and an honour to be able to create the still life fruits and vegetables for Guernsey Post. I have really enjoyed painting them and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity. These are the first set of stamps I have worked on and it is an overwhelming feeling to know that my artwork could be seen around the world”.

Documenting the biodiversity of Guernsey The Guernsey Biological Records Centre was officially established in 2003 by La Société Guernesiaise and the States of Guernsey to manage and share information about the island’s wildlife, ecology and natural environment. Its main purpose is to document, sustain and enhance the Biodiversity of the Bailiwick, monitoring climate change impacts, invasive species and the health of the islands’ native species. It has become a one-stop-shop for information on sites, habitats and the species inhabiting the islands. The team, which consists of one full time member of staff and a number of volunteers, the time and dedication of whom is critical, work closely with La Société Guernesiaise, the Biodiversity Partnership, the States of Guernsey and others, collaborating and sharing data for the benefit of the environment. The team run several projects and are involved in a number of others including the Black-backed Ant Survey, DolFin ID Project, Barn Owl Survey, Amphibians and Reptile Survey as well as the Red Data Book – an ongoing, living document listing rare and endangered species of animals, plants and fungi, as well as some sub-species. Advances in technology provide excellent opportunities for the team to record, monitor, and protect species; to advise on strategy and educate and engage the local community. The Centre has thousands of records coming in each year and uses ArcGIS Pro with a Distmaps interface to map the location of habitats, sites and species. Its team of volunteers help validate, verify and process all new data before it is uploaded onto its database which holds over a million wildlife records. The GBRC spent most of 2020 carrying out a wildlife dataset audit, verifying all its outstanding data and digitising records and surveys that have only previously existed as paper copies. The audit will help identify what local species are under-reported and what needs to be surveyed in the future. In the words of Record Centre Manager, Elizabeth Sweet, ‘Data cannot simply sit in an archive, when it can be applied to the benefit of both us and our environment.’

It gives us great pleasure to mark the occasion of The Queen’s 95th birthday with six stamps depicting key aspects of the life of Her Majesty, who is the longest-reigning monarch in British history. The stamps will be issued on 21 April, The Queen’s actual birthday. This special issue, Devoted to your Service, is a collaboration between 11 postal administrations, which sees four Crown Dependencies – Guernsey, Jersey, the Isle of Man and Gibraltar – become part of a co-ordinated collection undertaken by Creative Direction (Worldwide) Ltd, which manages the stamp design and print programme for several overseas territories - the Falkland Islands, British Virgin Islands, British Antarctic Territory, Ascension Island, , South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands, Tristan da Cunha and the Commonwealth of The Bahamas. Each of the Crown Dependencies and overseas territories have produced commemorative stamps bearing the same titles – Princess, Coronation, Marriage, Leisure, Pageantry and Royal Duty – although each feature different images of Her Majesty on these themes. In addition to Guernsey’s stamps, Presentation Pack and First Day Cover, we are delighted that our Princess stamp, depicting ten-year-old Princess Elizabeth and her corgi Dookie, is one of 11 stamps to feature on a joint Sheetlet. The production of these special stamps and related products has been undertaken by respected specialist stamp printers, commissioned on behalf of the Post Offices by Tim Underwood of Creative Direction (Worldwide) Ltd, who has been exclusively involved with the commissioning of design and production of stamps for over 30 years. 50p: Princess - Princess Elizabeth, aged 10, with her pet dog. 70p: Coronation - Her Majesty The Queen on the day of her Coronation at Buckingham Palace in 1953. 73p: Marriage - Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh at the Olympic Horse Trials, held at Badminton in 1952.
