Welcome Welcome to the summer edition of our Bulletin. It is a strange time for us all, with Coronavirus having an impact on everyone one way or another. We have decided to continue with our stamp calendar and hope that our summer issues provide you with something of interest during these troubling times. We have four new issues being released on the 21st July 2020, one of which is the third part of our quartet series celebrating Beethoven’s 250th anniversary. Stamp three features the Beethoven monument which was unveiled on 12 August 1845, in honour of the 75th anniversary of the composer’s birth. We are also delighted to be able to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Rupert Bear. On November 8, 1920, a small, furry brown bear wearing a scarf, sweater and checked trousers was sent off to the shops by his mother for some provisions. Unfortunately, he got lost on the way, but 100 years on, Rupert Bear continues to captivate audiences around the world. The stamps depict the very recognisable characters of Rupert and his friends.
Gallery’. Working in collaboration with Guernsey Arts Commission, the philatelic bureau invited local artists to submit pieces of work for consideration for the stamps. We had an overwhelming response and the six selected pieces depict stunning artwork, which depict a wide variety of styles, scenes and themes. We celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain with our latest Alderney issue. The Battle of Britain took place between 10th July and 31st October 1940, and was an attempt by the Luftwaffe to destroy the RAF and gain air superiority. The stamps depict a mix of black and white historic images and illustration of the planes that fought many a battle. Finally we would like thank you for your patience over the last few months. Although we are still able to receive and process orders, our staff levels have been restricted which has meant it has taken us a lot longer to process orders. We apologise for this and hope this hasn’t marred your enjoyment of our stamp issues. We hope that you are all keeping well and safe and have the opportunity to enjoy these new stamp issues.

Originally created by artist and illustrator Mary Tourtel, Rupert Bear first appeared in the Daily Express newspaper on November 8 1920. He is certainly one of the most recognisible bears with his checked yellow trousers, scarf and red jersey. Rupert was created for The Express newspaper in a bid to rival the Teddy Tail cartoons, which were published in the Daily Mail. It wasn’t long before Rupert took over as the nation’s favourite. In 1935, when Tourtel was forced to retire due to failing eyesight, Alfred Bestall took over the illustrations and also wrote the stories himself. He introduced popular characters such as Tigerlily, Pong-Ping and Sailor Sam. He also created Rupert’s yellow and red coloured outfit - Tourtel’s wore a blue sweater and grey trousers – and the fictitious English village of Nutwood where Rupert lives with his family. When Bestall took over, The Express decided to bring together all of Rupert’s adventures from newsprint and turn them into an annual. The first Rupert annual was printed in 1936 and it was a huge success. In the late 1940s Bestall was suffering from overwork and handed over some of the Rupert work to Enid Ash. She was unable to draw Rupert’s face, so Bestall continued to be involved.

Bestall drew Rupert for the Express newspaper until 1965, although he still contributed to the Rupert Annual for a number of years. It is thought that Bestall wrote and illustrated at least 273 Rupert stories, almost half of those ever written. Following Bestall, Alex Cubie took the reigns as illustrator for a brief period with the stories being written by Freddie Chaplain. John Harrold began illustrating Rupert in 1980 and continued until 2007. Rupert enthusiast Stuart Trotter, a highly experienced illustrator, has been the official Rupert artist since 2008 when he illustrated his first annual. Stuart’s style of Rupert artwork is inspired by his hero, Alfred Bestall. He has created new characters and has written 16 brand new stories for the very popular Rupert Annuals. We are delighted to celebrate the centenary of this most loveable character with our special issue stamps and miniature sheet.

12 facts about The Battle of Britain The Battle of Britain took place between 10th July and 31st October 1940, an attempt by the German Air Force (Luftwaffe) to destroy the Royal Air Force (RAF) and gain air superiority. The name Battle of Britain came from a speech Prime Minister Winston Churchill delivered to the House of Commons on 18th June 1940 in which he said, “the Battle of France is over. I expect the Battle of Britain is about to begin.” Almost 3,000 men in the RAF took part in the Battle of Britain. Prior to invasion Winston Churchill addressed the House of Commons and said, “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.” These Fighter Command pilots have been referred to as ‘The Few’ ever since. It was the first battle in history to have been fought solely in the air. London was systematically bombed by the Luftwaffe from 7th September 1940 for 57 consecutive nights, a campaign known as ‘The Blitz’, which comes from the German word blitzkrief, meaning ‘lightning war’. The Blackout imposed during the War was a defence against the German bombers during the Blitz. Each home was given blackout material in a nationwide effort to turn off all lights in towns and cities. It was enforced by Air Raid Precaution (ARP) wardens. Battle of Britain Day is annually observed on 15th September, the day the Luftwaffe embarked on their longest daylight bombing attack on London, forcing the RAF to fight back and successfully defend the capital. The Supermarine Spitfire, the iconic aircraft of the Battle of Britain was named after the daughter of the manufacturer’s chairman, Sir Robert McLean. His pet name for his young daughter Ann was ‘the little Spitfire’. The Hawker Hurricane shot down the most enemy planes over the course of the campaign. The Focke-Wulf FW-190 was the best World War 2 German fighter plane and on this £1.02 stamp it can be seen attacking a Royal Air Force Lancaster bomber, a plane which has become a show piece in all Battle of Britain memorial flights. 544 RAF Fighter Command pilots lost their lives in the Battle of Britain and 1,023 RAF aircraft were destroyed. Nazi Germany’s failure to destroy Britain’s air defences or force Britain to negotiate an armistice was one of the crucial turning points in the war.

For this year’s SEPAC stamps, we interpreted the theme Artworks in the National Gallery and decided to showcase some of the wonderful talents of the local art community. We asked Guernsey Arts Commission (GAC) to invite local artists to submit pieces of work to our team, for possible inclusion on our stamps. The standard of pieces submitted was incredibly high and gave us the unenviable task of selecting just six pieces of artwork to feature on our stamps and one on the First Day Cover. We also decided to showcase an illustration of all the artists who submitted pieces, which is depicted on our Presentation Pack. We are delighted with the results and we hope you like the variety of art that we’ve chosen About Guernsey Arts Commission Working with GAC for this stamp issue served as a timely reminder of the fantastic work that the Commission does. Since its launch in 2008, GAC has continued to provide the local arts community with an all-important voice whilst helping the arts in Guernsey to grow and develop, and involving more people in the arts. The GAC’s aims include helping the arts community to succeed and for the arts to be valued as a key element of island life. The Commission believes that everyone should have the opportunity to expand their ideas, skills and creative potential; it is particularly keen to provide opportunities for people who, as a result of their economic and social circumstances, have little access - or means - to participate in arts-related activities. Numerous exhibitions are held annually at The Greenhouse Gallery, GAC’s dedicated project and exhibition space. As a non-commercial space the Gallery, located in the gorgeous setting of Candie Gardens, enables GAC to bring contemporary, innovative art to Guernsey. With sincere thanks to Guernsey Arts Commission for its assistance with our SEPAC stamp issue and to those artists who submitted their work.

LOCAL CHILDREN PUT THEIR STAMP ON NEW DESIGNS During these exceptional times Guernsey Post has been helping the local community through a number of initiatives. One of the projects undertaken was inviting local school children across the Bailiwick to create a piece of artwork, with the winning designs being chosen to feature on new stamps for the themes #GuernseyTogether and #AlderneySpirit. As seen around the globe, local children have been involved in numerous activities to help their communities, from painting colourful rainbows to show support for essential workers, to baking for local hospitals and care homes, and generally helping to keep spirits up within the community. For our campaign, children were asked to create designs for our stamp competition that relate to the COVID-19 pandemic in a positive way. The 12 winning designs will feature on a set of Guernsey-issue stamps, whilst eight designs have been chosen to feature on the Alderney set. Subject to Royal Approval, these stamps will be release in late summer / early autumn. All proceeds from the sale of the Guernsey stamps will be donated equally between the Guernsey COVID19 Response Appeal and the Social Investment Fund – COVID19 Community Charity Appeal; in Alderney, all proceeds will go to the local Helping Hands appeal. The closing date for competition was 15 May and an independent judge selected the winners, who each won a £100 voucher from a local retailer. The stamps are currently in production and it is anticipated they will be released late summer / early autumn. We hope you will love these wonderful stamp designs as much as we do.
