Following the birth of the infant son of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on 22 July 2013, Kensington Palace released a statement two days later which said: - “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their son George Alexander Louis. The baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge.” After his grandfather, Charles, Prince of Wales, and his father, Prince George is third in line to succeed his greatgrandmother, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. He could choose to become King George VII when he eventually takes the throne. This would follow a long tradition dating back to German-born George I, the first Hanoverian King of Great Britain, who acceded to the throne in 1714. The last was the Queen’s father George VI who died in 1952 but was known to his family as Bertie. He was christened Albert but monarchs are allowed to choose a name under which to rule. He chose George in honour of his father, George V. It is widely thought that it was also to create the impression of stability after the scandal caused by the abdication of his brother, Edward VIII.
The name Louis is Prince William’s fourth name and is thought to be a tribute to Lord Louis Mountbatten, the Duke of Edinburgh’s uncle and the last British Viceroy of India before independence in 1947. Lord Mountbatten and Prince Charles were very close - he is said to have been Prince Charles’ confidant. Alexander, the Prince’s other middle name is one that three medieval Scottish kings have had. The Queen’s middle name is Alexandra. The birth of Prince George means that three generations of direct heirs to the throne are alive at the same time, a situation which last occurred between 1894 and 1901, during the reign of Queen Victoria.

The 100th Anniversary of the West Show This year sees one hundred years of Guernsey’s West Show and the illustrations on our commemorative stamps capture the spirit of this two-day event, which is a highlight of the summer. Back in 1913, life was very different on the island and farming was a major industry - especially in the western parishes. Farmhouses were geared around their small holdings with sides of pork hanging from the ceiling smoked by the open fires, livestock occupying one end of the long-house and furze ovens for cooking. Land was given over to growing produce or rearing animals and most country folk were selfsufficient in milk, butter, home-cured meats and vegetables. The turn of the century also saw the introduction of greenhouses, raising horticulture up with agriculture in our heritage. The islander, it seems, was born to grow things - whether grapes and tomatoes or cows and goats - and The West United Agricultural and Horticultural Society was formed to promote and encourage their agricultural and horticultural interests. At the centre of this was to be an annual show so all this talent and progress could be showcased and shared. Despite wars, downpours, droughts and livestock outbreaks, it has continued to go from strength-to-strength. Current President of the Society is Carole Turner who lives in a beautiful farmhouse in St Pierre du Bois where she grows her own vegetables and raises her rare and gentle herd of Golden Guernsey goats. Preparation for the Show is a massive undertaking and very much a labour of love for the committee. Miss Turner explains: ‘We endeavour to keep our annual West Show as traditional as is possible and many of our Grand Pageants incorporate the use of restored farm machinery and equipment from periods of the Island’s history. As President, I am so pleased that the stamps have drawn on the traditional aspects of our Show.’
