Chapter 1 The alarm clock rang at eight punctually. Angela woke up immediately and jumped out of her king-sized bed in the fastest way you can imagine. She never sleeps-in or oversleeps because she gets something more important to do. First, she brushed her teeth and washed her face really carefully. She actually thinks her gorgeous face is the worthiest possession she ever had, more than her slander and hot body. After that, here comes the motivation that makes her wake

7

up that early every day. She walked into her spacious dressing room that every girl will be amazed if they do that. There are thousands of clothes, from the summer tank top, mini skirts, shorts, dresses, body shirts, and bikinis to the winter jackets, coats, sweaters, blouses, hosieries, even gowns. People say that women will never give up on buying shoes, and Angela is the best proof. There are at least hundreds of different shoes that you might forget she only has two feet. Not to mention the various kinds of accessories, from the necklaces, rings, earrings, hair

8

ornaments, sunglasses, scarves and dozens of bags of designer brands. All of those are placed in an extremely well-organized way, and they all look brand new. When you walk in the dressing room, you might start to ask yourself: “Is the owner of this room a model of Vogue? Or how come everything she owns is that fashionable?” The answer is no, but Angela did subscribe the Vogue Magazine and she reads it as it’s a bible. She usually spends half an hour in this room every morning to figure out what to wear since that she’s like the fashion icon in the school and

9

almost every girl will copy her wearing style. After she finally picked the outfit today-- a tank top from Vivienne Westwood and a jean skirt to show her sun-tanned skin color and her long legs, she put on the make up attentively that she can’t stand any flaw on her face. She’s a little bit behind the schedule since she spent another thirty minutes thinking about which bag to bring. Eventually, she made a tough decision between the Prada and Chanel—she chose the Prada which she supposed it’s much more suitable. Finally, she’s all set to leave the house though

10

she has already been late for fifteen minutes. She’s not in the rush at all that she takes a serious look at her BMW sport car which she just recolors it to pink last week. It’s the third time she changes the color of it though she just received it as a gift from her father for only two months. Then she sat in the car, turn on the music as louder as it can be and drove out the garage. Just like yesterday, and every day before yesterday, she found out she’s stuck in a terrible traffic jam again. She keeps tapping on the steering wheel impatiently. Actually, it’s really

11

unwise to buy a car in New York because the public transportation system is convenient enough, but Angela got her first car right away after she got her driver license. Two years passed, she has changed more than five cars. After twenty minutes drive, she parked her car straightly in the parking lot of the Storm Queen Private School— you have no idea how expensive the tuition can be to study in this school. Then Angela suddenly realized that she has been late for an hour. In fact, it doesn’t matter since Paul—her father, contributed a huge

12

amount of donation to the school last year that she doesn’t have to worry about being late or getting an F on the test and report.

13

Chapter 2 “Oh! Angela! You look absolutely stunning today.” As the minutes she steps out her car, Daisy runs to her and tell her how beautiful she is. In fact, she does it everyday that Angela almost gets tired of it. “Calm down Dais, it’s not the first time you met Angela. Don’t be so excited.” Liz walks to them slowly from a Benz sport car, and Gill is with her. Gill gives Angela a hug and whispers near her ear. Angela says nothing but smiles evilly. They walk into the school together

14

when they hear the bell rings—it’s the break time. Almost every student pays great attention to them because they seem so incredibly perfect—gorgeous appearance and wealthy background. Though most of the students in Strom Queen Private school are born in rich families, they are still the stars, especially Angela, the prettiest and the most affluent one, she’s seem as a leader among the four of them. If you don’t know them, you must be new. “Sweetie, why are you so late today?” A charming guy walks to them from the other side of the hallway and he

15

gives Angela a kiss on her cheek. “Oh! You know, the same stuff repeats and repeats every day. I spent too much time hesitating to bring the Prada or the LV bag.” Angela sticks her tongue out and chuckles. That’s Ryan, the cutest and hottest guy in the school, without mentioning he’s also the smartest one who can always gets full As and earn himself the scholarship. Girls in the school are crazy for him because he seems so flawless, but they are also jealous of Angela though they know none of them can compete against her. They start to put on the same make-up as Angela

16

does and copy the wearing style of hers. They are doing this basically for two reasons—first, if you don’t do it, it will make you a loser because others do it. Second, they hope they can have Ryan’s attention. Ryan and Angela are just like the figures of the fairytale. Ryan is the prince and Angela is the princess which gives people a feeling that they are born to be together because they are perfectly matched that they seem incomplete without each other. They have been seeing each other for almost a year, and it looks like they are in a stable relationship though they

17

never fight. It’s a little bit uncommon for a couple dating over six months, but it’s considered that Ryan is too considerate and sweet to fight with Angela. They walk five people in a row, and students on the hallway soon become quiet and yield the pavement for them. Angela walks directly to a black-hair girl who’s standing beside her locker. She stops right in front of her and talks to her in an incisive and loud voice. “Oh my goodness! Flora! Gill just told me that you are wearing a GAP t-shirt, and I told her that’s impossible. Who else will wear GAP clothes

18

except the people live in the slum? I can’t believe you are actually wearing it!” “There’s nothing wrong about my family can only afford the clothes from GAP, Angela.” The girl who’s named Flora replies her in a calm tone. “If you really insist on wearing this junk to school, maybe being naked can get you more attention.” “Angela, guess what? We can definitely be good friends if you are not that mean” “I’m sorry to let you down, Flora, but I will never be friends with someone wears GAP” Angela walks away when every student on the hallway keeps staring at

19

Flora, and being surprised that how dare Flora to talk to Angela like that. People in this school respect Flora like she’s a queen and nobody have the courage to offend her, not even her best friends. Things between Angela and Flora have last for a few months since Flora transferred to this school half of a year ago.

20

Chapter 3 Flora is born in a middle-class family that she totally doesn’t fit in this school which is filled with people from upper-class. Angela and her best friends despise Flora from the minute she walks into that school and their classroom. They are people from different backgrounds, and that’s why they don’t see eye to eye on anything. Angela couldn’t understand why Flora doesn’t dress in the expensive clothes as they do, and why she takes the subway to school instead of

21

driving a car. The most important part is why she looks so ordinary and there’s nothing special about her. She’s not good-looking, doesn’t always get good grades, not born in a prosperous family. She’s just a normal person like most of the people in New York. But the Storm Queen Private School means a lot to Angela that she thinks only people with some special qualities are qualified to study in it. On the other hand, Flora also can’t understand why everybody in this school cares so much about the appearance. Does it really matter if a person not wearing clothes of

22

designer brands and doesn’t have a sport car? She thinks everybody in this school is out of their mind, especially Angela and her best friends. Their values are hugely different which makes Angela bullies Flora all the time, but Flora never look down on herself and is able to face Angela without any fear. The school ends at five o’clock, and Flora goes straightly home while her classmates are discussing which fancy restaurant they are going for dinner, where to go shopping, or whose party they are attending. Flora doesn’t really have friends in this school due to a reason

23

that everybody knows Angela hates her, and nobody is dare to resist Angela. Flora takes a shower first and then starts to clean the house. After that, she prepares the dinner for the family and waits for her parents to come back. “Sweetie we’re home! What’s on the table tonight? Um….. Let me guess. Burgers? They smell so good.” Steve gets one burgers from the table before washing his hands. “Honey, don’t forget our house rules! We only have our dinner on the table, and three of us must sit together.” Jane takes away Steve’s burger and put it back on the plate

24

before he has the chance to give it a bite. Steve and Jane are Flora’s parents, and they are really nice people. Both of them are salespersons that they have to work long hours to pay for the bills and the daily life expense, especially Flora’s tuition. They have a busy schedule so the only time their family can get together and talk in the dinner time, and that’s why “having dinner on the table when Steve, Jane, Flora are sitting together” becomes a house rule. “How’s your day sweetie? Anything new? Gosh! The burgers you made are so delicious that I think they can for sale” Steve

25

asked Flora with a satisfied face. “The same old dramas. Angela hates my GAP t-shirt but don’t worry! I don’t care what she says or how she sees. I love the GAP t-shirt you bought me, and I definitely will still wear it next time.” Flora said, with a careless face. “Oh sweetie, you have to know that not all of these are Angela’s fault. Don’t blame her. She doesn’t know how we live on our life because she has a different background, and that’s not her fault that her family is so rich that they can afford those luxurious stuffs.” Jane said patiently and kindly.

26

“Yes, I know that. But sometimes even I will become irritable. There’s one thing I don’t get it. Why must I study in the Storm Queen Private School? I like my original school more, and I miss my friends there. People in this school share different values with me. It’s almost impossible for us to become friends.” Flora has a big bite on her burger. Steve stops chewing and has a serious face. “I thought we’ve talked about this for thousand times, Flora. We make you transfer to the Storm Queen Private School simply because you can go to whichever university you want

27

once you graduate from that school.” “But the tuitions are ridiculously high. You guys have to work double shifts for me to study in the school that I don’t even want to be there.” “It’s worth it if you can go to the university you want. Working double shifts is not that tough as you think sweetie. Don’t worry about us. Keep holding on for a year and then you are free.” Jane tries to make things easier and make both Steve and Flora cool down. “Of course, mom. I’m not really complaining. I know you guys are doing this for my own good. I’ll definitely graduate

28

from this school then I can choose where I’m going to stay for the next four years.” Flora gives both Jane and Steve a kiss on the face. While Flora is washing dishes, she keeps thinking about Angela. In common sense, she is supposed to hate Angela, but deep in her heart, she actually wants to be her friend and understands her more though she knows that’s impossible since Angela looks down on her and she can’t change that no matter how hard she tried.

29

Chapter 4 Angela just arrives home from a steakhouse. While she’s having dinner with Daisy, Liz and Gill, they keep talking about the incident which happened in school today. “I can’t believe that Flora said Angela can be good friends with her. Angela is so amazing, how come a girl like Flora could say things like that?” Daisy’s face was full of surprise. “She’s insane.” Unlike Daisy, Liz is always intellectual. “What do you think, Angela? Do you agree that Flora and you can become

30

friends?” Gill turned her face to Angela. “Never.” Angela ended this conversation and drank a glass of wine. But now, when she steps into her house, she couldn’t help to ask herself, “Why am I being so mean to Flora? Did she really do anything bad? Okay maybe she’s just different from me, but it also means we’ll never be friends. I JUST DON’T LIKE HER.” However, she isn’t sure whether she’s telling the truth or she’s forcing herself to believe that. She hates things that are complicated so she decides to drop it. “Angela! Come and pick up these bags for me!” Angela

31

hears the voice from the vestibule and she walks there, thinking of: not again. Anny put over twenty bags on the floor, and she’s sweating. Angela picks up half of the bag and said impatiently “Mom, not again. Why are you buying so many things when you already have three dressing rooms that are full of clothes and shoes?” Anny walks into the house and said “I feel stressed today, so I must go shopping.” “What make you feel stress? You don’t have a job, you don’t have to do the house chores, and you don’t even get anything serious to do!”

32

Angela can’t control herself and yells at her mom. “I’m afraid the boots I want so badly will be sold out, so I couldn’t even sleep last night. Though I did get the boots today, I still feel I’m having too much pressure. By the way, miss, I AM YOUR MOM. I don’t need you to tell me who I am or what I’m doing.” Anny seems furious. “All you care about is shopping! Have you asked me how I’m doing in school or how my life goes? I’m telling you, the answer is NO! NEVER!” Angela is so mad that she throws all the bags on the floor, and walks into her room. She slams the door in

33

front of Anny’s face. This kind of incident happens almost twice a week, but Angela can never get used to it. Anny, her mom, is a shopaholic, and the worst thing is that Steve, her dad, allow her to do the things whatever she wants only if she doesn’t bother him on his job. She seldom sees her dad since he’s always abroad and dealing with his business. Angela lies on the bed and can’t stop bursting into tears. She knows most of the people think her life seems perfect and flawless, and they think she owns everything. The truth is, she doesn’t even own

34

the thing she wants the most—a supportive and lovely family. Her parents satisfy her needs on the materials and give her a lot of money, but money can’t buy her their time, love, and care. About this, she tells nobody, not even Ryan or her best friends because she thinks it’s a shame. That night before sleeping, she’s washing her face and then she feels an extreme pain from her leg. She’s too painful to keep standing up, so she squats on the floor and feels the pain going away. She gets back to her room and starts to think: When did I hurt my leg? There are even no

35

wounds on my beautiful leg. And then she tells herself, maybe it’s just a serious cramp. She falls asleep with concerns.

36

Chapter 5 The next day, she’s waken up by the awful pain, but she ignores it and still goes to school as nothing happens though she has a bad feeling. In the parking lot, Daisy runs to Angela and is going to compliment her as usual. When she saw Angela’s face, she seems panicked. “Oh my poor Angela, didn’t you sleep well last night? You seem…….tired.” Angela knows the word “tired” has the same meaning as “terrible”. The moment she’s going to find an excuse, she feels the pain

37

again. This time, the pain is too unbearable that she passed out directly. Gill and Liz catches her and calls for the ambulance right away. (In the hospital) “Is any of you Angela’s family?” Doctor Steve asked the three girls and a boy who comes to the hospital with Angela. “No, we are just her friends. I think her parents are too busy to come. How’s Angela now? Can she leave the hospital now? It smells so bad here.” Daisy replied the doctor before Gill gets the chance to do that. “Please ask Angela’s parents to come here immediately. I have something serious and

38

emergent that I need to talk to them right now.” Doctor Steve said. Steve and Anny arrive in three hours and meet Doctor without any patience. “Doctor Steve, I’m Paul, Angela’s father. What’s so serious that you have to meet me in person instead of just tell my secretary?” “I’m sorry to inform you that Angela is suffering from the cancer in her bones, the leg bones. And she’ll have to replace her bones with an iron brace or she might die in three months.” Doctor Nelson said professionally, without any panic. Paul and Anny seem that they are completely in the dark,

39

and they don’t get a single word which split out from the doctor’s mouth. “What are you talking about? Angela is a healthy and happy teenager. She’s just eighteen! There’s no way she has cancer!” Anny chooses not to face the truth. “In fact, the possibility of a teenager having cancer is much higher than an adult having one. Please don’t worry. It’s still not too late to find out now. We’ll find the way to cure it.” Doctor Nelson said confidently. “I don’t care how much I’ll have to spend, just give me my healthy daughter back.” Paul said almost angrily and left the hospital.

40

“Aren’t you going to see Angela? She’s conscious now.” Doctor Nelson stops Anny when she’s trying to leave. “She’s conscious which means she’s fine now, and I got more important things to do. Excuse me.” Anny just walked out the hospital as her husband did. Doctor Nelson sighs and goes into Angela’s ward. “Are you feeling any better, Angela? I’m Doctor Nelson, and I’m here to tell you what’s going on.” Angela is lying on the bed and staring at the ceiling. “You don’t have to tell me. I heard what you just told my parents. The only one thing I want to

41

know is, am I going to die?” she’s saying this without looking at the doctor. “No, you are not going to die. You are lucky that the cancer is discovered in the early stage. You might have to go through a tough period when you are taking the treatment, but everything will be fine in the end.” “Am I going to lose all my hair like the girl who has cancer in the movie?” That’s what Angela cares the most—her beauty. “It depends on how your body reacts to the chemotherapy. But yes, it’s very possible that you are going to lose your hair.” Doctor Nelson has the

42

responsibility to tell the truth thought it will hurt Angela. “Leave me alone, please.” Angela totally breaks down and starts to weep. “Press the button behind your bed when you need any assistance.” Doctor Nelson knows how difficult it is to ask a teenage girl to accept the truth that she has cancer. The best solution is to leave her some space and time, so he just walks out the ward.

43

Chapter 6 In the ward, Angela feels desperate and hopeless. She thinks her life is completely ruined. She can’t stop crying until she sees Ryan walk in the ward with a hesitating look on his face. “Oh baby, you are finally here. I really need you to give me a hug. Come here!” Angela thinks she find a lifesaver. Ryan said nothing but standing behind the door. “What’s wrong?” Angela can sense that something bad is going to happen, which worse than the bad news she just knows. “Angela, I

44

think I can no longer be with you anymore. I’m sorry, but I love you only because you are beautiful, hot, and rich. I’m not ready for dating a girl who has cancer.” Angela doesn’t even have time to say a word and Ryan just left. The following days, Angela lives in misery. She eats less, sleeps less, and most of the time she just simply keeps quiet. None of her “best friends” came to visit her, not even received a call or text message from them. She finally realizes that her life isn’t that perfect as she thinks, not at all. Both her friends and boyfriend don’t really love

45

or care about her because who she really is. They are treating her nice only because they think being with her is a symbol of power. Even her parents didn’t come for the reasons she can’t understand. While she’s feeling sad and wretched, someone walked through the door. She raised her head and surprisingly found out it’s Flora. “What do you want? Come here and mock at me?” Angela glares at her. “I heard you are seriously sick, so I just want to check out how you’ve been these few days.” Angela can’t believe what she heard. “But I was so unkind to you…” “Hey, now

46

I feel like those happened thousand years ago. Can we start over?” Flora smiled gently. Angela suddenly found out how foolish she used to be. She judged people through their appearance and backgrounds. She forgot what really matters are their personalities and if they are sincere to her. She also thinks money can achieve everything she wants but she finally figures out that money can’t buy her a true friend. Now, she sees Flora’s face and astonishingly feels better. “Of course. Only if you forgive me for those stupid things I did before.” “No problem. Let me be your

47

company to go through all of this. You are not alone.” Flora gives Angela a hug and Angela can’t help it but crying out loud. She thinks she finds hope again because she has a friend who will be with her. Meanwhile, Paul and Anny walked in followed by Steve and Jane. “Honey, I never found out how careless I am till Jane talked to me. She let me know that no matter how brave or independent you look like to be, you are still a teenage girl and you definitely need us to support you and let you know that we care about you.” Jane said with guilt. “ I’ve cancelled all my

48

meetings, and I’ve announced my staff that I’ll spend less time at work because I’m going to take care of you. I finally realized that money can’t buy my daughter’s health.” Paul said and rounded his arm through Angela’s shoulder. “Life is really…..marvelous. I never thought Flora and I can become friends one day, and I never imagine she’ll be the one who appears when I am helpless. Moreover, her parents even change my parent that I’ve tried so hard before.” Angela now has a whole new perspective to life. “YOU WILL NEVER KNOW.” Flora said meaningfully.
