Chapter 1 Shock In the ATT hospital, I sit next to my wife, Mavis, who is now lying on a bed suffering from breast cancer.
Last
Saturday, when we were having dinner at home, she told me that she recently felt very uncomfortable. So the next day, I brought her to have a medical examination. After three days, we received the result. We were told the breast cancer which means there’s little hope for her to survive. The doctor told us that she needed to stay in the hospital and had the chemotherapy. That was a shock for both of us. “You can get over it!
Trust me and trust
yourself!” I told her. “How come life is
6
so cruel to me?” Mavis said sadly. “Honey, no! It is just a test.
You can
overcome it as long as you want to!” I told her again with constancy. “I will always be with you,” I added. For a moment, I was stuck in sorrow. However, I knew that I should encourage her instead of being sad with her. While in the hospital, I tried to make her feel happier and forget the pain.
“Do you still remember how
we met when we were in high school?” I asked.
“Yes, of course. I will never
forget about those cherished memories that we shared together in the past,” she said in her sweetest smile.

Chapter 2 Back to the Start Back to the year while Mavis and I was seventeen years old, we were classmates in high school. She shared everything with me including the relationship between her boyfriend and her. “Dan was really good to me.
He was the best
man I had ever met,” she always told me. I listened, though I knew that Dan wasn’t a good man, but a liar. It hurt because I couldn’t tell Mavis how much I loved her, and also how I wanted them to break up. I didn’t want Mavis to get hurt.
However,
if I told her the truth, it would be painful for her. That was why I still couldn’t decide what to do.

Chapter 3 A New Relationship That day, when Mavis and I was shopping downtown to buy a birthday present for Dan, we saw something. Dan was holding a girl’s hand at the opposite street.
Mavis ran toward them.
“What
is going on? Who is she?” Mavis asked with anger. Dan couldn’t say a word at first.
Then, he told Mavis that he’ll
explain it later when he got home.
I
looked at Dan angrily then I left with Mavis.
Mavis kept crying and didn’t say
anything until I asked her the first question. “Will you break up with him?” “I don’t know.
I loved him and I don’t
want to leave him.
Perhaps he will give
9
me some excuses,” she said trying to comfort herself with these words. “Mavis, you’d better leave him.
He has
already been unfaithful to you.
Why do
you still try to find excuses for him?
It is
worthless.
And you will get hurt again
and again.
Don’t trust a liar!” I told her.
The next day, when I got to school I saw Mavis’ swollen eyes. I knew she must have been cried the whole night. Mavis came to me and said, “Dan called me yesterday, he said he wanted to break up with me and told me that not to see him anymore.
Then he hung up the phone
and turned off his cell phone,” Mavis cried again. I held her in my arms. “It

is ok Mavis.
He doesn’t love you but I
love you and that’s enough,” I told her. Mavis looked at me and then said “Are you kidding? We are good friends, aren’t we?”
“No, I have been in love with you
for a long time. I am really serious,” I replied.
“Let me take care of you,
Mavis,” I looked at her and said.
Mavis
nodded her head and cried again in my arms.

Chapter 4 Happy Memories “Tim, I wanted to travel with you?” Mavis said. I asked. said.
“Where do you want to go?”
“Lanyu! It’s my dream,” she
Soon, we went there without any
plan. It’s a small island near Taiwan. Not many people visited there because it only has beautiful scenery and the aboriginal people.
We arrived in the
early morning and started our journey right away. this trip.
We were both excited about
“This small island is
surrounded by the ocean and it is amazingly beautiful,” Mavis said.
We
sat on the beach and I could feel that she was very happy. “We will create more

happy memories in the future together,” I told her. “Thank you, Tim. I never thought I could be so contented like this. You fulfilled my life,” Mavis said. “Mavis, promise me that no matter what may happen in the future, don’t forget the memories in Lanyu. Let us come back here twenty years later,” I told her. “Yes, I will remember all your words in my mind,” Mavis said.
13
Chapter 5 Study Abroad It had been three months since we came back from Lanyu. There was only two month left and we were going to graduate.
No one could tell what would
happen. That day, Mavis told me that her parents decided to send her to the US. I know it’s been a dream for her. She always told me she wanted to study abroad and this time her dreams were going to come true.
How could I be so
selfish and ask her not to go. “Mavis, go and seize what you can seize now.
Your
future is much more important than ours. Life will find its way,” I told her. “Tim, I am sorry.
I know this decision is selfish
14
and it would hurt you a lot.
I don’t want
to leave you, and I don’t want to lose this opportunity either.
Do you understand?”
Mavis cried. “I know, I know. get it.
Go and
I will be right here waiting for
you,” I said.
We hugged each other and
both cried.

Chapter 6 A Different Life I didn’t show up at the airport on the day that Mavis left because I knew that I couldn’t bear this kind of pain. One week ago, Mavis decided to break up with me.
She didn’t say anything except one
sentence.
“I don’t love you anymore.”
Then she just disappeared.
Actually, I
knew she didn’t want to leave me.
She
just didn’t want to face the truth and reality. So, she ran away. I knew she must be suffering from some kind of sorrow. I thought maybe this decision was good for both of us.
No one knew
whether we would meet again in the future or not. She needed to begin a new
16
chapter in her life.
I couldn’t become a
burden to her. A few days later, I got a letter from her:
To dearest Tim, How have you been? I am fine here. I think about you all the time.
I know my
decision hurt you a lot; however, I think that’s the best choice for both of us. I didn’t want to leave you, but there was no better way since I am not sure how long you would have to wait. You have your future and I have mine. start new phrases in life.
We both need to I hope you can
find the one who might be suitable for you.

Best Regard, Mavis My tears dropped down after reading. And then I understood.
When everything
about her seemed to be so far away, what I needed to do was to accept the truth and set both of us free.
18
Chapter 7 A Promise to Keep I have no information about Mavis for many years.
Maybe she had already
married and had a big family in the US. Look at what I was now.
I had a job with
a good salary, but still single. I tried to fall in love with someone else; however, I just couldn’t forget Mavis.
A few days
later, it’s going to be twenty years. I still remember the promise that we had in Lanyu though I knew that she probably had already forgotten. I decided to go back to Lanyu alone. I didn’t expect to meet her again. I knew it would be impossible.
I took a small airplane.
One and half hours passed.
19
I arrived.
After twenty years, everything in Lanyu was almost the same; however, the people had changed.
I walked around and
finally sat at the same beach where Mavis and I had sat twenty years ago. I sighed for those happy memories we had spent together.
At the same time, I saw
someone walking toward me. At first, I couldn’t recognize who she was. She approached and finally stood in front of me.
Both of us were very surprised.
Mavis and I really had met again after twenty years.
We hugged each other
tightly and cried. “Why are you here? I thought I could never see you again?” I said.
“I thought I would never see you
20
again either,” Mavis replied.
“How have
you been? You must have a wonderful family.
Where do you live now?” I
asked. “I am fine. I moved back to Taiwan last year. I tried to contact you, but it seemed that you had already moved somewhere else. I am now working in the ICCD Company. During the past years, I tried to find someone who could be with me for the rest of my life, but I still couldn’t forget you,” she said. “So that’s why you came here?
Do you know
that I feel the same way too? I came here because I wanted to keep our promise. And now, I am sure that we were destined to be together. Marry me, Mavis!” I said.
21
“Yes, I will, Mavis said nodding her head with tears dropping down.

Chapter 8 A Brand New Life A week later, we held our wedding in Lanyu.
We only invited our parents and
some relatives to share our happiness. We all knew that after so many twists we would treasure our relationship more. Two years passed, we looked at our baby playing in the back yard of our house with satisfied smile.
We both realized
that life was actually kind to us.
It gave
us a sincere love and child. We got everything we wanted and we truly thanked God.
23
Chapter 9 Farewell “It is time to sleep.” A nurse came in and brought us back from our memories. “Honey, you need to take a rest. Let us talk tomorrow,” I said giving her a kiss on the brow. I never thought it would be the last sentence that she would ever hear from me, because the next morning Mavis died from cancer.
I knew people all had to die,
but I wasn’t ready to accept the truth. I stood beside her cold body. I told myself she just fell asleep and she would wake up. I couldn’t control myself and then I cried. “My beauty Mavis, wake up and talk to me!
Don’t leave me alone!” I cried out.
24
At the funeral, our child, Sally, and I stood in front of her gravestone. “Mavis, I will take care of our family and Sally. Don’t worry. I know you will protect us in heaven. You will always be in my heart.
Farewell!” I murmured.
