About the author Sammi Chang was born in 1993 in Taiwan, a beautiful island surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and Taiwan Strait. I am now a fourth-grade student in Wenzao Ursuline College of Languages, which located in southern part of Taiwan. In my leisure time, I like to take trip with my friends and family. Every trip is a unique story!
Foreword This is the first time for me to write a novel. I decided to write a novel basis on judging the humanity and the significance of death. “Life asked death, why people love me and hate you? Death replied “Because you are a beautiful lie and I am a painful truth.” I had read these words from the net and I was inspired by it. Most of the people are afraid of death, include me. But after reading these words, I was thinking about “Isn’t death just a
gift that gods greet for human beings?” No matter how your lives are, happy or miserable, we could both end up with a completed ending- the death, which I interpret it as a period in a sentence in this book. In addition, don’t forget to spend time on maintaining the relationship between you and your families. Time flies, cherish what you have and you won’t regret what you have missed to do.
Synopsis If Trust Gets You Killed, Than Love Gets You Hurt‌ Victor stays alone in the ward, what merely left beside him are the medical facilities and a bouquet of flowers. He was told that his son Marc has been doing great business with his friend, but Victor have never got an idea of what big business can his son been doing. That was the last night they saw each other, a sonorous gunshot set them apart‌
Chapter I Loneliness
In the cramped ward, Victor alone, murmuring‌ The bright moon accompanied with the stars shining in the sky. The gentle breezes bring the pleasant aroma of
jasmine. “How harmony they are. Victor sit in the wheel chair, look out of the window. The old man recalls those fine days they used to have. When his son was still a little naive boy, he always begged him to read the bedtime stories for him. However, Victor used to be very irritable about this request because he was busy in his work, miner. He left early at five in the morning, and came back home late at eleven o’clock. He had no times and energy to
pay any attention on his son. “I should have cherished those days I have with my son. He is now left home for work, and I’m the one who is left alone.” Victor sighs. He closes his eyes to feel the breeze and try to forget the agony of loneliness. His face expresses his grief more eloquently than any words. He is now solidarity elder man, with no family accompanied, but only medical devices around him. ***
The other day, in the morning… “Doc, doc” the nurse knocks the door and comes in with a young girl. The young girl rushes toward Victor with a bouquet of flowers in her hand.
“Mon chère grandpère, c’est votre cadeau, des jasmins!” “I collect these followers on the way here. It smells great, isn’t it? It’s for you. I bet you’ll love it.” Emilie pours the words in a heavy accent
of South French mixed with some English she learned from school. “Oh. It’s you.” Victor couldn’t figure out who this reckless girl is at first. He is shocked at the moment, but soon he recognizes that she’s the girl of his son. “I haven’t seen you for ages. My little Emilie. How’s your school work? You’ve grown a lot. And…….” Victor stops the words suddenly and continues after a while… “How is your father? Does Marc come with you?” Victor asked her in a
desirous and wishful ton. “Non.” Emilie responds her grandfather. “He is now expanding his important BUSINESS with a man who called Henri. Ah, he is a busy man, who even hasn’t time to take care of his own child, ME and visit his dad, YOU.” The elder doesn’t respond but look out of the window as usual. “I’ve got to go, grandpa. Hope you love the present I gave you. Bye!”
Chapter II Temptation
Midnight. In a bistro… “Brother, I’ve told you that if this transaction is done successfully, we can get a lot of profit from it. However, you need to help me at first...” Henri whispers to Marc in a way fearing someone heard.
“Being a rich man has been your dream, isn’t it?” “As your best friend, I’m helping you to find some resources to pursue your dream.” Henri continues. Marc gets two cigarettes from his cigarette case and lights them. He passes one of them to Henri, and then asks. “How much can we get from it?” Marc asks. “It depends, if there isn’t any intercept, I mean, if the cargos aren’t being hold up or deprived by the cop, we can definitely earn a minimum fifty thousand British
pounds.” “Temptation, right? Do you want to join us? I am telling you this is a bon anza for us to become wealthy.” Henri tells Marc in a serious way. Henri is Marc’s best friend, and a better part of his fortune is made thanks to Henri, a friend he met when he was holding a post in a tobacco factory two years ago. Marc trusts him, but this time he hesitates because the cargo they are
shipping from Morocco is …Cannabis. “Hey bro, there’s no need to be afraid. You have done so many businesses with me before, and no failure!” Henri says. “So what am I going to do? From which harbor we are going to import it?” Marc throws himself into the couch and drinks some water to have himself be clear-headed toward this complicated issue. “The one in Tangier, of course. It’s the nearest harbor to North Africa.”
“Alright, I’m involved.” Marc agrees the collaboration. *** Henri has their companions in Morocco package the cannabis in numerous tea pots. Once the shipment arrives in France, the truck driver will transport them to Marc’s suite, which he rents for storage of cannabis in the suburb…
Chapter III Distance There’s a while, Victor’s condition is getting better. The illness has been controlled. Therefore, he goes back to the cottage he used to live in Marseille. He is surprised to see Marc is home… “Marc, c’est toi! You are backing home. Aren’t you doing business with someone who called…Henri? I’ve thought that I won’t see you till I die. Ha-ha!” Victor says in a humorous way. “What are you talking about all of these nonsense? By the way, how did you
know I’m doing business with him?” Marc talks to his father, being curious but impatient. “Emilie, your daughter. She came to visit me when I was in the hospital. She has grown a lot. She told me that you are doing business with him. She might have been a little unhappy about your concentration on your BUSINESS…I thought… and so do I. You’ve never come to visit me, huh?” “OK, OK, just stop talking about
these nuisances. I’m backing home to take a rest and relax from my busy life, please. Speechless, the elder goes back to his room on his wheel chair. Marc sits in the deck chair and falls asleep. That night is even painful than the days Victor had in the hospital. Without any care from his child, one could be the most miserable one. He can feel the distance between them are even farer... ***
Chapter IV GunShot “Bang Bang...” Late at night, Victor and Marc are awakened by the sonorous gun shot. An array of police stand outside the cottage and one of them comes to Marc. “We’ve arrested some of your partners, and they’ve confessed that they are working for you. The drug trafficking.” “What are you talking about?” Act the goat, Marc replies… The other cop brings a guy out of the police car, by whom Marc is shocked and
frightened. It’s the truck driver that Henri employed for drug trafficking. Marc’s face turns totally pale by this incident. He falls on his hands and knees. “How come it was discovered and where’s Henri?” “He has told me that I’d only need to rent a house for storage, and he’ll finish the rest procedures. And we can enjoy the large amount of fortune together at the end.” “Merde, it’s all finished. My reputation and my fortune. Henri must
have run away‌ In the side, Victor sits in the wheel chair, and he suddenly realized the great business his son was doing is drug trafficking. Being dizzy, he fainted and fell down from the wheel chair. ***
Being convicted of illegally importing
cannabis, Marc is escorted to the jail. Wondering why Henri betrayed him and escaped with fortune. Hatred breeding and he becomes insane… *** With wild ambition, some people successes in life. Nevertheless, some are leading themselves to the devil’s production, “Greed”.
Chapter V Period-Le Point
Victor was sent back to the hospital, and the tumor was found spreading in his head. “Your grandpa’s condition is getting worse after the shock. Little girl, be strong. We all love you. The nurse tells Emilie. *** After two months, Emilie is informed by the police that his father, Marc, goes
totally crazy and commits suicide afterwards… Being calm, Emilie goes to the ward where his grandpa stays. She holds his hands and stares at him. “Everyone will be equal after they die, right? No matter how wealthy they are, or how successful they have been when they alive, isn’t it?” Emilie says, but there isn’t any further responds except two lines of tear outflow from Victor’s closed eyes. He smiles slightly.
“A lifetime is just like a sentence. The death is a period for a lifetime, after writing down this period, everybody is Equal.” Without breath, period is written down in Victor’s sentence. No fortune is brought by Marc; no concern from his son is brought by Victor. Nothing, is everything in death…Now, they’ve got everything... ***
