Introduction Susana Lee is now studying at Wenzao Ursuline College of Languages and she majors in English and minors in French. She was born in 1994 and lives in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The Throne is her first English published novel and she has been writing novels on blogs since twelve. Most of her novels are about romance and this time Susana tried to write a different style of novel, The Throne.

Prologue Fifty years ago, there were two strong islands called Ollie and Swift near todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Australia. King Ollie X and Charlie Swift were best friends since childhood and two islands had diplomatic relationship from the last century. One day, they were planning to attack their nearest island, Coli, and they succeeded. However, Charlie Swift unfortunately died in the bullet war and King Ollie X took charge of Swift Island as one of his colonization. Since then, most of the people from social

economic status were sweatshop labors working for Ollie Island and no one could accept the result. Also, their prince disappeared and there seemed no hope for rebuilding the kingdom. After King Ollie X died, his son, King Ollie Xl was successor and now is the present king of Ollie Island. Twenty years ago, he decided to return the freedom to Swift Island. In addition, they had signed a contract and they had cut all connection with each other. Since that day, nobody knows what

happens in Swift Island right now or even has never heard of this name before. Two years later, King Ollie Xl got married with Annie Ollie, the youngest daughter of Gordy Briton. At the same year, he met a lady, Cathy, when he was out the hunting. Then he married her as his concubine and he lives happily with his royal family untilâ&#x20AC;Ś

Chapter 1 The announcement I lay awake in my bed and look at the throne aside me. It’s today. I murmur. I am going to be the queen of Ollie Island, but how about Eric? “Princess Christina, may I come in? It’s time for breakfast.” A servant says. “Sure! And where is Eric? I want to talk to him. Is he okay?’’ I ask. “Prince now is in his room. Let me dress you up first.’’ She dresses me in dark navy gown with pink Randall shoes.“You look really nice, princess. Today is your

18-year-old birthday and also you have to be prepared for the coming enthronement this afternoon.” This is the first time that I feel extremely nervous in my life, and in my mind I know Eric always wants to be the next king and he has all the qualities that my father requires. Until now, I still can’t figure out why my dad said that to me… Yesterday, I was in my room and a servant gives me a card. It says, “Allez dans ma chambre, papa.” It is written in French which only my dad and I can

understand and we communicate with each other when it is urgent. Something bad must happen, I think, so I took a cape to cover my head and ran quickly to my dadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s studio.

He was sitting on the chair and writing something that I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see clearly. He

took off his glasses and looked at me sincerely. “What happen, dad?” This time I couldn’t guess what he was going to say and he seemed waiting me to ask him. “Well, my dear, come here and sit.” He pointed the chair next to him and gave me a book. “What is that for?” Then, I flipped a couple of pages and was surprised to find that book are written base on English alphabetical order. Wait! There are meanings in those alphabets. I tried to find a hint from them, but there was nothing found.

Perhaps I focused on the wrong place. Or...dog-eared pages. “Yes, the letters on the dog-eared pages.” I speedily flipped again and then… “No way!” I cry out. “Dad, are you going to resign from the throne? Why do you do that? ” I was holding the book tightly. I couldn’t believe what I saw. T-H-R-O-N-E- T-O- C-H-R-I-S-T-I-N-A “You speak too loud and I haven’t let anyone known it yet but I am going to announce this news in dinner. Christina, papa is old and I am not that strong you

think, my dear.” He said while holding my hands. “Listen! You cannot trust your brother, Eric. He is not what you think of and stay away from his mother.” “What are you talking about, dad?” I laughed. “I am the one who understands him the most, and we grow up together. Although sometimes I don’t like his mother, Cathy Ollie, Eric and I get along pretty well. I think he has potential to be a good king as you.” I tried to convince him and just now I was confused with his words. “You will understand it one day, my dear,” he says.

“I choose you as my successor because you have a kind heart as your mother, Annie Ollie. I am incapable to take good care of her, so that she has to sit on wheelchair for the rest of her life.” I wiped his tears and reassure him. I haven’t seen my dad cry in front of me and it must take him a lot of courage to tell me something that hidden deeply in his heart. “Princess? Princess? Everyone is waiting for us in the dining room. It’s better that we move right now.” The servant carefully asks me and follows

me to the dining room.

Chapter 2 The Hole “Finally, here comes our princess. It must take a couple of hours to make up and dress up for the girls in your age. I can forgive your lateness.” Cathy Ollie says bitterly and she seems eager to complain more, but Eric interrupts her.“ Mom, it’s okay. Let’s have breakfast! Also, today princess is going to be our next queen. You can’t talk to her like that.” What Eric says irritates me a bit, but I think he still hasn’t recovered from the announcement yesterday. I sit across from

Eric, but he doesn’t look at me. None of us says a word during breakfast and I can’t stand the silence anymore. I say, “Well, tonight I am going to hold my birthday party at the yard and invite some friends that Eric and I both know well to watch the play. Cathy Ollie and dad, would you like to join it?”“Sorry, my dear. I still have some works to finish today, but tell me what you want for your birthday gift. I ‘ll try to find the best one to you.” I hug my dad and kiss his cheek. While Cathy Ollie shows her unfriendly look,

and says, “No thanks! I am afraid that I will decrease your interests if I join you. But I still thank princess for inviting me. Also, tomorrow is your enthronement, don’t be late!” She smiles and goes back to her room. I turn to Eric and try to talk to him, but he turns away and is about to leave. “Eric, hold on! I have no idea why dad chose me and yesterday I tried to convince him to change his decision. Believe me, what I say is all truth.” He looks at me coldly, and leaves a sentence before he leaves.

“Whether dad chose you or me is not important anymore, we will see.” What does he mean? Why he seems so far to me? My mind is in a mess right now. “Cherry, I want to see my dad privately. I can take care of myself and I ‘ll come back for lunch.” “Princess, wait…! The king asked me to accompany you anywhere… princess!” I think I have to tell dad that I am not ready yet and I want to give up the throne if that makes Eric happier . I go to the rooms where dad might stay,

but I don’t find him. I start to worry about him and then I see a shadow in a room. This must be dad. He always likes to be alone and make people find him.

I run into the room, but who stands in front of me is not dad. I couldn’t see his face clearly, and he is getting much closer to me. “Who are you? Answer me!” I shout at

him. “There is no need to tell you who I am, but very soon you will know.” He asks, “ so, what are you doing here, princess? Here is supposed to be a forbidden place to you.” What? He knows me? I have never seen this guy before but why he looks so familiar. I answer “I am finding my dad and I don’t know where he is. Do you know…?” Suddenly, he grabs my right hand and covers my mouth by his hand. Then he says, “be quiet! Someone is coming.” Now, I am

terrified and I can’t move any inch because his body is so close to me. I ask him, “why are you afraid to be seen by others? Only if you do something illegal, so are you a prisoner?” He answers me impatiently, “ No. I am not like what you think. So, if you really want to know who I am, come with me and jump to the hole when I count to three.” Three…two…one… Jump! “Ouch!” I scrape my knees when I fell in the hole. “Are you okay?’’ he asks, “the

first time that I fell in this hole, I almost broke my leg. You are really lucky.” I am a bit furious and scream at him, “ why you bring me to this dark damn hole? Now tell me who you are and how I can get out of here? Later if my dad doesn’t find me, there is no way for you to live.” He doesn’t answer me; instead, he presses a bottom on the wall and asks me to follow him. Within a few seconds, a corridor appears…..and we enter into a completely different place from where I live.

Chapter 3 The Assassination After the breakfast, Cathy Ollie secretly enters Eric’s room. “Dear, listen! Today is your best time and follow the instructions that I tell you then , okay?” She puts her hand on his shoulder. “Mom, I don’t want to kill anyone. Catherine tries to persuade dad and she is very nice to me and….”Cathy interrupts him and says. “Shut up! You don’t understand how hard I want you to be a king. I cannot stand your father and his “ sweet” daughter anymore. Or you prefer to watch me died,

and then you can live happily with them. Is that what you want?” Cathy Ollie starts to cry and describes how hard her life will be if Eric doesn’t become a king. Finally Eric is convinced and says ,“Okay, mom. I will do what you want and ascend the throne.” “That is my good boy!” She hugs him and kisses on his cheek. “Eric, I will see you tonight at eleven in the dining room to celebrate our success.” Cathy Ollie says before leaving his room. After she leaves, Eric is sitting on his bed and hides the knife that

his mom gave him under his pillow.

I cannot open my eye and the sun is so bright. It is so different from where I live and there are lots of cows, sheep and people here seem have a hard life. “Where is it and who are you?” I ask you impatiently. “What do you think about this place?” He ignores my questions again and I don’t know why I always

answer his question naturally. “Is it where you live? I think the life here is difficult and some buildings were completely destroyed.” I step forward to take a look on castle.

“We call here Swift Island and it used to be one of the richest islands. Me, I am the disappearing prince of Swift Island, Henry Swift, and no one knows it

except your father.” He says seriously. “What! My father knows it?” I am totally surprised and I don’t know why dad doesn’t tell me anything about this island and also an surviving prince. “King Ollie saves my life, but on the other hand he destroys the only hope of Swift Island.” He looks at me and continue to say. “ I want to save my people and be the next king of Swift Island. However, King Ollie asked me to follow all of his instruction and hide me in your castle. You are the first girl that I

have ever met and King Ollie told me a lot of things about you.” I am confused right now and it seems that my dad hides some secrets behind him and there must be something about his past. Before the dinner , King Ollie returns to his room and takes out of his diary from one of the drawers. “Sorry, my daughter. Maybe this is my last time writing a letter to you and I know Eric is going to kill me tonight. I don’t want to defeat him and this is what I owe him.”

King Ollie smiles and talks to himself, “my dear daughter, thank you for accompanying me for 17 years and when you become the next queen, Henry Swift will be your husband. You two can….” He hears footsteps getting closer and suddenly Eric enters into his room. “What’s wrong, Eric? It’s hard to see you come to talk to me in person.” King Ollie tries to stand up and talk to Eric. “ You, you…don’t approach me or I will kill you.” Eric raises up his hand with a sharp knife and says, “ listen! I won’t kill you if

you asks Catherine to give up her throne. Also, I want you to take care of my mother and give her more love. You know I always envy you dote on Catherine and ignore my mother and me. Sometimes I even think that perhaps I was not your son.” All his words make King Ollie sad and painful.

King tries to pacify Eric and says, “my dear, it’s all misunderstanding, but I

confess that what I have done to your mom and you is my fault. I apologize to you, but I cannot give the throne to you because this is what your grandpa has decided . If I don’ follow the rule, all Ollie family will be cursed and we will die.” After listening to King Ollie’s words, Eric laughs grimly and says, “ at the end, you still don’t want to abdicate the throne and give it to me. I don’t want to listen to you anymore and you hurt my heart. The best way to reduce my pain is to kill you and then I can get whatever I want.

Hahahahahaa” He screams and laughs loudly and he looks like almost crazy. “I can’t imagine that a king’s life is controlled on his son’s hand and within few seconds he will become a cold dead body. King Ollie keeps calm and looks at his incurable poor son with a long sigh. “Then kill me. KILL ME! One day you will find out the truth. I know you won’t forgive me even if you kill me. But……promise me, don’t kill Catherine. She is the most thoughtful sister and she would rather sacrifice herself but

protecting your safety. You cannot find the second one.” After King Ollie finishes his words, Eric nods his head and then holds on the knife and stabs into King Ollie’s heart. “ Sorry, dad! I promise you I won’t kill Catherine but the throne is mine.” King Ollie throws up blood from his mouth and breathes his last. After an hour, two servants run from King Ollie’s room and scream with freighting tone, “ ahhhh king Ollie….King Ollie was found dead in his room. ”

Chapter 4 The country life “Come with me, princess.” Henry Swift is holding my hands and we are walking on the rugged road. I guess now my face is red like an apple and this is my first time staying with a man. Isn’t it like one of scenes written in love stories? “Are you okay? Pay attention to the roads here. If you fall down, I won’t help you.” He warns me. “Thanks you’re your consideration, Henry Swift.” I blush again and quickly walk close to him.

“Now we are approaching a cottage where we are going to stay for a week. Princess, don’t worry ! There are two bedrooms, so I won’t bother you.” He explains to me. “What! Why we have to stay here for a week? And how are we going to spend a week?” Are you kidding? You want me to stay here for a week. How about my dad and my

enthronement? Wait! How long have I been here? I am supposed to be in the castle not here. “Henry Swift, sorry. I have to leave right now. There are some important things I need to do and thanks for your invitation.” I am about to leave and he says,“ princess, I’ve heard from King Ollie that you would like to experience an ordinary person’s life, and he asked me that if one day I meet you, I can take you here for a few days. After you become the next queen, I bet you don’t have time to do what you

want to do. You don’t have to worry about the time because here the time in Swift Island is a week slower than Ollie Island. When you return back to castle, you have enough time to prepare for your ceremony and birthday party.” I imagine my relief by hearing his words, but it is weird that he seems to know everything happening in the castle and about me. “Thank you, Henry Swift. You are so considerate and what are we going to do during this week?” I ask him. “ Well, we can do farm work, raise animals and weed, but I am

afraid that your body cannot afford those hard jobs. Or you can choose……” I interrupt him, “ I can take it and I will try my best to do it. You just have to teach me and then I can handle it myself. Don’t worry, I am not a weak princess like anyone thinks.” Now I am full of energy and I have confidence to finish my one-week works. The next early morning, I was woken up by brightly sunshine. Today must be very hot. I dress up and take a seat to have my breakfast.

Only a piece of bread and a glass of milk, is that what people here have for breakfast? I couldn’t believe what I see. “ Don’t doubt it! Some people even share a piece of bread and they cannot afford milk. We live much happier than people living here.” I have a bite of that bread and I treasure what I own right now. I don’t lack of anything and my dad gives me whatever I want. After I return back to Ollie Island, I want to help this poor island. “If you finish your bread, let’s go to the farmland near the house.” He goes

outside to wait for me accompanying him. I hurry to drink up the glass of milk and eat rest of the bread. “Now we weed first and then farm seeds.” I plant them by following his instructions, but I almost get sunstroke and sweat profusely.

“Princess, you do not look well. I take you into the house to rest.” During these three days, I am suffering

from a flu and fever and I feel like I will die anytime. “Henry…Henry am I going to die? My family is waiting for me and I have to take care of my father and Ollie Island.” I cry out loud and suddenly he hugs me and says, “ don’t worry. I won’t let you die because you are my fiancé and I will take care of you.” He lowers his head and kiss me…kiss me ! I am totally shocked and push him away. “ Do you know what you just did right now? Are you crazy? And why do you say I am your fiancé?” My body

seems running out of energy and I pass out. When I wake up again, it’s the day I have to leave. I see Henry Swift is packing and he is about to carry me on the back. I stop him and say, “thank you. I can walk on my own and I don’t need……”He holds me in his arms without my permission. I don’t know why my heart beating so fast and a blush comes into my cheeks.

Chapter 5 The whole truth Henry Swift and I are back to my room in the Ollie Island. In a second, my servant runs toward me and cries. “Princess, princess. Where were you? I couldn’t find you and King Ollie……was found dead in his room.” I am unable to stand by myself. I am too shocked to say anything and Henry Swift asks her, “who’s the killer? And what’s that dawn annoying noise upstairs?”He looks at her with a frown. “ Eric Prince is holding his enthronement and just now he told

everyone that no one can stop him from being the next king and it is he who killed King Ollie.” I shake my head and scream. “ I can’t believe it! The killer is my dearest brother, Eric. You are kidding right?” “ Princess, all you have heard is true and I found a letter and a diary left in King Ollie’s room.

I opened the first page of diary, it says:

“My dear daughter, this is daddy’s diary. At first I don’t think it is necessary to write, but I have too many things to tell you and I am afraid I cannot live until then time. I always designate a few servants to serve your aunt, Cathy and Eric. I know they are planning to kill me on your birthday, but I cannot avoid it. I want to protect you and that’s my destiny. After you were born in this world, every day staying with you was happy until your brother was born. The biggest mistake that I made is to marry Cathy. Your

mother, Annie Ollie, got sick and was pushed to fall from third floor by your aunt. I am sorry for Annie and you two are my love. One day I found my father’s diary in his study room and I couldn’t believe that he had a deal with Charlie Swift, the ex-king of Swift Island and it influences your marriage and enthronement. It says that if my first child is a girl and she has to marry Charlie’s son. Also, she will be the first queen of Ollie Island no matter she has sibling or not. However, at that time your grandpa was too ambitious and

he betrayed his best friend, Charlie, and destroyed Swift Island. I still remember the last words my father told me are to take good care of Charlie’s son, Henry Swift and he was wrong for what he did to Swift Island. He was afraid that one day people in this island will take revenge on us, until now I haven’t reconstructed Swift Island. Catherine. My dear, if you don’t want to marry Henry, I won’t force you to marry . In the past ten years, I have taught him what I learned and told him everything about you.

Henry is like me and I believe he can take good care of you for me. If I am not in this world anymore, don’t cry for me! Think about the next steps and take your throne back. I love you, my daughter.” I cannot help weeping, Henry dries my tear and then he holds my hands and says, “Catherine , I will help you to win your throne and then defeat Eric Ollie.” “ Really, Henry? You really want to forgive my family and help me? My grandpa destroyed your home and……” “ You are my fiancé and when the first

time I saw you, I have already fell in love with you. No matter what happen, I will always be with you and support you. He kisses me and holds my hands tightly. “Now, it’s time to fight. First, we have to find out Eric’s weaknesses. Catherine, do you have any ideas?” He asks. I think for a while and say, “ his mother, Cathy Ollie. He obeys what she tells him and I guess this was my aunt who asks him to kill my dad.” While saying, I clench my fist. “ Catherine, later you go upstairs to ask your aunt out in the yard. Then I will wait

there and kidnap her, don’t worry I won’t hurt her. After that Eric will definitely come to ask you and then I will be with you.”With Henry and dad’s servants’ help, our plan was carried out successfully. Cathy Ollie is with me right now in the yard and Henry just now tied her hands and legs together. Now we are all waiting for Eric and here comes him! We can tell Eric is drunk from his heavy footsteps. What a great opportunity! Henry gives him a blow and he passes off.

Chapter 6 The forgiveness I open my eyes and I know Eric is looking at me furiously. “Why you put me into jail? I am the king of this island. How dare you set me in the jail?” He scolds at me. “Shut up, Eric! You used your hand to kill dad, and he has already known you were going to kill him.” I look at him and continue to say, “ take a look at his diary. Do you know the reasons why my dad doesn’t like you? It’s because of your mother, Cathy Ollie. She tried many times to frame up my mother and me. I still

couldn’t believe that you killed him just like your mother said. She just wanted to take advantages of you in order to be with her boyfriend with the stolen money from our bank. I feel sorry for you! ” I leave himself alone with my dad’s diary and go to Cathy Ollie. I see a woman sneers at me and laughs loudly and screams, “ your mother and you would never win me hahahaha……Look at your poor mother sitting on wheelchair for rest of her life. I am so happy and I can’t wait to watch her die in front of me.” She

points at my face and continues saying,“ The only thing I haven’t finished is to kill you. My poor son didn’t do it for you and now I ‘m going to do it myself. She takes out her knife and are ready to stab into my shoulder. Eric pushes me away and he is stabbed.“Eric!” I scream and people in the outside all run inside. “Mommy, please don’t kill my sister. I promised dad not to kill her and this is the only thing that I can do for him. In the past, you told me how bad dad, Catherine, and Annie aunt are. I know you just

wanted more love from dad. Mom! Please forgive dad, Catherine, Annie aunt and your own son. Because of your jealousy and enmity, you and I have hurt people who love us. What we have to do is to forget enmity and then live happily with our family.” All people are touched by this scene and I cry for help and ask servants to find a doctor. “Doctor John is coming, and King Eric please waits for a second.” A servant says. Suddenly, Eric holds my hand and Henry’s hand and says, “After the marriage with Catherine, Catherine is

Ollie island’s new queen and Henry will be the next king.” I smile with tears. “Eric, thank you! Henry and I will live happily and I think dad has already forgave you and Cathy Ollie. After your recovery, I will send Cathy aunt and you to Swift Island and help me to manage our new nation, Chrisry Nation. I will explain to you later, and take care of yourself and aunt.” Henry and I leave the jail, and we enter my room. “Catherine, what do you mean Chrisry Nation? You didn’t mention it to me before.” He asks.

“Well, actually it is a gift that I want to give you, but I haven’t organized my project already. My idea is to unify two islands into a nation and we can both take care of our people in our island. In the future, you will be the king of Chrisry Nation and I have plenty of things to complete with you.” “ Me too, Catherine. Thanks for god letting us meet each other. Tomorrow is going to be our wedding and Enthronement and……” Catherine kisses him and says, “ I win my throne back and that is you.”
