About the Author First of all, a warm welcome to all readers who happened to stumble upon this book. Before moving on to the next page, let me share something about myself with you. To start with, my name is Vivian, 18 years old, and I am currently a fourth year student of Wenzao Ursuline College of Languages. Influenced by my writing teacher, Mr. Kenneth M. Smith, I began my journey into creating my own story. Although it might seem kind of impossible and challenging for me to finish such a difficult task at the moment, I still tried my best to make it. I really enjoy a lot in the process of writing. Hope all of you like my work! 1

ď Ł Chapter 1 ď ¤ Born to the World

Colorful flowers blossomed like twinkling stars over the meadows. The birds sat in the trees and sang sweetly. Pure sky was blue like an ocean. The breeze crisped the brook beside the path. A clear day in spring, on a pleasant April

4

morning, with sun softly shining outside, a happy family gathered around the bed to celebrate that their lovely little girl was born to the world. They were grateful and loved each other. All of them enjoyed this precious moment with the greatest delight.

Her

birth

brought

enormous

happiness to the whole family. The only daughter and also the first child in the 5

family, Alice, had an enriched childhood. Her parents not only offered her the best environment to grow up but also provided her with a good solid education. No matter what she wanted, they would try their best to satisfy her needs and make her happy. Alice’s life was just like in a heaven, she could easily get whatever she asked for.

Five years later‌.. Little by little, day by day, Alice became a little girl who was very selfish and willful. She only cared about herself. 6

In addition, she was so demanding that she even wanted all the things to be done in her

will

no

matter

what

happened.

‘Daddy, I want a lollipop. I want the one exactly the same as what Aunt Sally bought me last month. I mean the pink one with beautiful ribbon on the top which

is

strawberry 7

flavor.’

‘No problem, my sweet heart. What do you think that we go to buy it together this Saturday afternoon?’ replied her father. ‘I absolutely do not agree with this idea! I want it right NOW!’ Alice cried out loud.

8

‘But it’s almost midnight and the candy shops are all closed. Daddy is so tired now, and it’s cold outside. Honey, you have to learn to wait and be patient.’ said the father patiently. ‘I don’t care! You are such a terrible parent! I think you just don’t love me anymore, because you refuse to give me the thing that I desire so much.’ Alice shouted angrily. ‘Ok, stop, dear. You are being too emotional. My little girl, of course I love you. However, you have to understand that 9

the problem is that what you are asking me to do is way too much.’ the father sighed hopelessly. ‘I’ve had enough! You are so annoying!’ yelled Alice. There was nothing he could help. Few minutes later, he compromised and accepted

her daughter’s

unreasonable

request. He could not bear to see her dear little girl upset and disappointed. ‘I can buy you some candies from the convenient store nearby as long as you want, how about that?’ asked the father. 10

‘No, I don’t want that kind of cheap candies. Give me what I want, or leave me alone!’ she slammed the door in his face and rushed out madly with the word. ‘Honey, I really love you, yet there is one thing I want you to know. I wish you can change your attitude toward people and be more considerate.’ said the father with worries.

In following years, this kind of conversation repeated again and again like a never-ending vicious circle. Fortunately, 11

Alice got nice parents who could tolerate all her unbearable behaviors and patiently talk to

her.

Nevertheless, they still

expected her to change her attitude toward life. Although she kept ignoring what they said, they never gave up.

12

Chapter 2

Life in School

Alice was smart and always did well in her studies; however, she did not get along with her classmates at school. In most of the time, she’s very selfish and only cared about herself. Moreover, she 13

acted capriciously like a spoiled child all the time. Although she was clever and always got excellent grades on all the tests, no one could stand her insufferable behaviors. She was such an arrogant person that she thought she was better than everyone else, and she took no interests in other people at all.

14

Alice used to have her lunch alone because she did not have any friends and no one would invite her to eat together. She liked being on the edge of people’s lives, while warning everyone to keep away from her. The frost in her heart made the air around her cold. Nobody ever stopped her on her way to classes to say, with a friendly and happy smile, ‘How are you?’ No classmates dared to ask her any question. Surprisingly, she seemed to enjoy the feeling of being isolated very much, and what others thought about her 15

did not matter to her as well.

Every time when their teachers assigned them to do the presentations, Alice would feel extremely irritable. During the discussion among group members, everybody thought differently, and everybody was astonished at the opinions of the others. However, she was very impatient of listening to others expressing their

ideas.

She was so

arbitrary that she made every decision right away without considering other’s 16

feeling. What’s more, she even took it for granted that everyone should compromise and follow her ways to do things. That’s the reason why most classmates disliked her.

Alice’s parents were really worried about her. Therefore, they tried to teach her the right way of treating people. ‘Don’t be so childish, you should learn to grow up. Someday in the future, you might have to face the challenge by yourself. If you kept acting like this, you would not have a true 17

friend who could support you when you were in trouble. Whom you could talk to when you were sad, desperate or even lost faith in yourself if you did not have a companion who could encourage you to move on and cheer you up? Mommy and Daddy won’t always be there by your side whenever you need.’ they said gently.

18

 Chapter 3  Surprising Pregnancy

One day, Alice came home from school at 4 o’clock in the afternoon as usual. However, she would never expect the shocking news that she’s going to hear later. After she put down her bag, her mother informed her about her surprising pregnancy. When Alice saw the report of

19

examination, she got extremely furious, she yelled at her mother ‘How could you do this to me? ‘Honey, I thought you would be glad about it. Isn’t it great that you will soon have a cute little sister?’ replied her mother. ‘No, that’s not what I wish. I don’t want you to spend time taking care of little baby, I am much more important then it, besides, you are MY mom! I thought that you promise to love me forever.’ She gave her mother sorrowful looks, and then she 20

shut herself in the room sobbing her heart out. She was afraid that the love and attention she got from her parents would be stolen away. She believed that what she had now would all disappear from her life with the upcoming birth of this little baby.

21

ď ŁChapter 4ď ¤

Unexpected Change

Alice felt unusually depressed and heartbreaking, and her sadness last for several months. Since it was an irrevocable fact, she could do nothing but facing the challenge, or what she said that it was a 22

disaster for her.

Unexpectedly, the born of her little sister, Amanda, had a great influence on her. Alice changed her mind at the first sight she saw her little sister. Her innocent look and sweet smile made her felt ashamed of her own words spoken few months ago. Also, she knew how hard for a woman to give birth to a baby and how much pain her mother suffered. Moreover, she regretted for what she said before, and she made up her mind to take good care of 23

her sister and cherish her as her beloved one.

24

ď ŁChapter 5ď ¤

Happily ever After

Alice’s life was totally changed. There was a noticeable transformation in her personalities. She determined to alter and became a better person in the future.

25

She started from quitting her bad habits, and she was now able to control her temper and be more considerate to others. At the same time, she learned how to avoid hurting people around her with improper words. ‘I know how badly I have behaved! I have been unkind, unfair and so impolite to almost everybody. I am so sorry.’ she sincerely apologized for what she had done in the past. Furthermore, she discovered the importance of considering other’s feeling before making any decision. She planned a new life for herself, and 26

now she always showed a cheerful and enthusiastic face to the people she met in order to spread joy and happiness to the world. Her family, classmates and teachers were fairly amazed at her changes.

Because of Amanda, she learned to share, to love, and to enjoy the life. Now she was a good sister who did a great job at

looking

after

little

children,

a

well-behaved daughter who respected her parents, a pleasing classmate who would help her peers to solve their problems, and 27

a

nice

girl

who

deserved

friendship and wonderful life.
