It's all in the details D

uring the 2012 London Olympics this summer, I read an interesting behind-the-scenes story about the team of people it took to manage the torch relay as it moved from city to city across England. The story, posted on the 2012 London Olympics website, related the following statistics: During the relay 26,640 hotel beds were booked in various cities. Luggage was loaded and unloaded a total of 31,680 times—that adds up to 475,200 kilograms of bags hauled off the trucks and into the hotels. Participants and staff ate 12,180 lunches, including 5,400 bananas.

Some people might be bored by the statistics, but they fascinate me.

That’s how my brain works. Similar behind-the-scenes logistics, although on a smaller scale, are needed in the magazine world, as multiple departments work to produce 32 pages of reading pleasure. When you break it down, each tiny detail is an important step in achieving the end result.

Sometimes in life, all the little details don’t line up exactly as we have planned. When this happens, I revert to my catch phrase, “Everything happens for a reason.”

This Fall 2012 issue is one of those times, and I will reflect on the turn

of events with deep gratitude for years to come. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the subject for the feature story for our Southern Alberta edition had to cancel only days before we went to press. I had intended to put myself on the cover at some point, but had no idea it would be this soon. With the encouragement of friends, family and colleagues, I am excited to experience Guided Synergy magazine from a different perspective: from within.

Congratulations to the subject of our Northern Alberta feature, Leah Podollan. This busy entrepreneur and I have discovered just how difficult it is to portray the complexity of a woman’s life in 1,400 words or less.

Dear Editor, I was very interested in Julia Khafizov’s article regarding food sensitivies. I recently had food intolerance testing done (Hemocode through Rexall Pharmacy) and was wondering what specific tests Kelly Stubbert received though Dr. Dube. Did she receive conventional allergy testing, or did the test involve a blood sample used for IgG reactions to certain foods? Any information on her testing would be greatly appreciated and may shed some light on my recent food sensitivities.

Dear Lydia, Thank you for your interest in Julia’s article, “Food Sensitivities” (Spring/Summer 2012).

We passed your question along to Julia and wanted to share her response with you and our readers.

Editor I have spoken to Kelly regarding your question.

She had both tests done. The blood testing was done several years ago, but Kelly didn’t find it very useful because it wasn’t comprehensive enough. I have also recently learned that drug allergies do not show up on this test.

Dr. Dube does conventional skin-reaction allergy testing, so he was able to test Kelly for a variety of food and other common allergens.

A great number of my clients have had and benefitted from comprehensive allergy testing (a blood test) done by Meridian Labs. This test, however, is not covered by Alberta Health and costs about $250.

hen Linda Warwick found herself unexpectedly at her husband’s hospital bedside this spring, uncertain of his condition, she was terrified. The emergency occurred just as her two oldest sons were moving into a place of their own, and she was unable to help them with the transition.

A few days later she was in a car accident.

The stories and people featured in the pages of her magazine—a publication devoted to the body, mind and spirit—have taught her many lessons about alternative medicine and, most importantly, the ability to be in control of her own health.

Warwick has slowed down her own train by reducing her work week to four days,

I knew I needed to slow down and take care of myself,” says Warwick, 45, who is the mother of three sons, Sheldon, 23; Travis, 20; and Austin, 17, and who will celebrate her 25th wedding anniversary with her husband, Ken, in February 2013. “It’s really tough to slow down a locomotive that’s been speeding through life.”

“His health situation has taught me to be kind to my own body,” says Warwick, whose self-care practices include yoga, therapeutic massage, acupuncture and reflexology. “I truly feel that this magazine has given me a real sense of freedom with my own health.”

As the couple settled on the family grain and cattle farm near Oyen, Alberta, Warwick got her wish to discover green pastures, but she was still connected to her farming roots. They worked on the farm, started a pipeline construction business and had a family. Linda worked part-time as a financial administrator at the local school division. Her first introduction to energy healing was through Ken’s mother, who practiced reflexology and Reiki on the couple.

“I remember thinking this was kind of

She’s learning to enjoy the quiet time in her life while Ken and the boys are away working in Tumbler Ridge, BC. Gardening is her passion, and when the family is home she loves nothing better than preparing a nutritious meal for them and going on long walks with Ken and the family dog, Patch.

Ken, 46, was diagnosed with diverticulosis, an inflammation and infection of the colon that was likely exacerbated by his busy career as the owner of a project management and consulting company serving the oil and gas and mining industries in Alberta and British Columbia. Days on the road lead to poor eating habits, weight gain and stress.

To say that owning a magazine is a dream come true for Warwick is an understatement.

A self-confessed magazine junkie, she has been consuming the pages of lifestyle publications since she was a teenager growing up on a farm near Elrose, Saskatchewan. Summers sitting on a lawn mower, cutting acres and acres of grass, gave her plenty of time to reflect upon the world she would one day discover beyond her borders.

Although Warwick is truly grateful for a medical system that was able to diagnose and treat her husband’s condition, she and Ken have approached his recovery not through medicine, but rather through diet and lifestyle changes. As a result of putting

cool, but I wasn’t sure that I really believed in it,” says Warwick. “Looking back, even though I didn’t fully understand the benefits at the time, I was open to it.”

When their business fell on hard times, the Warwicks sold the company’s assets and moved to Pigeon Lake in the fall of 1996. They built a home on an acreage and had horses. The kids were growing up and Ken was striking out as a consultant for oil and gas, a job that took him away from home. Linda worked for the 4-H Foundation of Alberta in financial administration. Things were good but the couple was experiencing financial challenges not uncommon in today’s society.

“Every step we made was towards improvement,” recalls Warwick. “We were digging ourselves out of debt from the past and building anew.”

There was just one thing missing: Ken. His work away from home was difficult for Linda, so they decided to pull up roots and move to Grande Prairie in the fall of 2003.

recognized the need to put a face on the cover of her publication, and the Winter 2010 issue featured local health personality Sharon Dillabough, Grande Prairie business owner and holistic practitioner. The tradition has continued, with health practitioners and holistic business owners on every cover. Warwick also acknowledged that the magazine’s success depends on a team of professionals, and she continues to build on a strong foundation that includes a graphic designer, sales representatives, a web editor, a web developer, freelance photographers, journalists and editors.

The growth and changes at Guided Synergy have not gone unnoticed by the practitioners and advertisers featured in the publication who have experienced increased business and greater acceptance of their specialties.

“The people who have been involved in the magazine prior to my coming on board have said it is much easier and more acceptable to be in this industry now than it ever has been, and I absolutely feel that the magazine has contributed to that movement.”

“There was opportunity in the north and it has been absolutely the best move,” says Warwick. “We’ve grown together. We’ve really grown as a couple. Our boys did very well in school. They were able to make some close friends and be more involved with sports.”

Warwick continued to work in the financial and administrative field for oil and gas service companies, but reached a point where she was ready for a change. She needed more flexibility with her time, so she began doing some soul searching and research on homebased businesses.

“It had to be flexible, I had to earn real money, I wanted to use my creative side and it needed to be something I could be passionate about,” says Warwick. “I really was diligent in trying to find something that fit for me. So when the magazine presented itself, it allowed me to do everything I was looking for.”

Her skills in branding, marketing and creative design for business; financial administration; advertising; contract negotiations; human resource management and business development provided a solid foundation for running a magazine. She credits the professional coaching she and her husband received through the Living in Balance seminars in Kelowna for her recent successes in using her talents to juggle their multiple businesses.

When Warwick’s first issue of Guided Synergy rolled off the press in the fall of 2009, she realized she had her work cut out for her. As she and her son Travis delivered the magazine to local stands, she recalls the eager anticipation of customers and staff to hold the most recent issue in their hands.

“That’s when I knew I had some big shoes to fill,” says Warwick. “I wanted to honour what had come before me and take the magazine to the next level.”

Warwick says the growth potential for Guided Synergy is vast and she has her sights set on new markets, including Vancouver, Victoria and Kelowna—a goal she can achieve only with talented people to help her, people she says she is always on the hunt for. Her vision is a national magazine with regional coverage in each of its markets, making it a truly unique Canadian publication accessible to all readers.

If Warwick has her way, the gap between alternative and conventional medicine will continue to narrow. It is her goal to help bridge that gap.

“I think as more people become aware and open through education and information, maybe they’ll choose alternative practices first, instead of as a last resort,” she says.

“That’s definitely one of the goals of the magazine, to be a part of that transition.

Emotional Eating

How to break the cycle I

t’s been a trying day for Sara. She missed her bus and had to endure a sarcastic comment about tardiness from her boss.

Several times during the day, as a little escape from the mind-numbing project she was working on, she found herself in the staff kitchen, snacking on a co-worker’s leftover birthday cake. Annoyed with herself, she vowed to eat a low-calorie dinner. But she was so tired by the time she got home that she couldn’t face cooking and reached for a bag of chips instead.

Sara is an emotional eater. Emotional eating is a complex issue because it is based on our feelings. We are constantly experiencing feelings, whether they be loneliness, anger, frustration, joy, shame, anxiety or so on. How our feelings affect our eating—or whether they do at all—is different for every person.

For some of us, certain feelings and situations can activate the emotional eating cycle. Triggers can be as varied as the time of day, a comment from a friend or family member, hormones or an upsetting situation.

Not all triggers are negative. We may eat to celebrate or to reward ourselves. And just as our feelings can trigger eating, what we eat can diffuse or increase anxiety and guilt.

When our eating increases negative feelings, we can get caught up in a cycle we desperately want to avoid: the emotional eating cycle.

Although both men and women can be emotional eaters, it’s no surprise that women are, in general, more prone to emotional eating than men are. Many women are so busy caring for others that they have no time or energy left to take care of themselves, leaving them especially vulnerable to stress.

In Canada, women are also twice as likely as men to experience depression—another emotional eating trigger.

In order to break out of the emotional eating cycle, we must become aware of two things: why we eat and what we eat.

When you feel the need to eat, try to determine whether you are actually hungry or whether something is triggering

emotional eating.

If it’s a trigger, can you identify what it is? Once you’ve figured out the feelings and situations that are likely to have you reaching for the chip bowl, try to reduce their frequency and their effect on you.

Here are some tips to help you: • Have reasonable expectations of yourself, and don’t force yourself to live up to others’ unreasonable ones.

• Take time out for yourself. When we are so busy taking care of others that we neglect ourselves, we are cheating everyone. Being completely worn out defeats the purpose of being there for others.

• Explore your “why” or your purpose in life. When you’re faced with obstacles you don’t know how to overcome, having goals will help you keep moving, rather than sitting on the couch with a pizza. It will also motivate you to take care of yourself physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

• Realize, and accept, that life often looks more like a squiggly line than a straight one.

• Prepare a list of things other than eating that you can do when faced with a trigger. Distract yourself until the feeling passes.

Next, look at the foods you eat, especially when you encounter a trigger. Are they actually making the cycle worse?

Carbohydrate-rich and sweet junk foods can help you feel better temporarily, but can cause cravings for more, eventually leading to mindless eating. If you’re craving carbs, healthy ones, such as those in whole grains and fruits and vegetables, are a much better choice.

If you become a conscious eater, aware of what you’re eating and why, you will be more able to stop an episode of emotional eating before it turns into a cycle.

Rainbow Risotto I

was told by my teacher and true yogi that in the quest to become enlightened and live “yoga,” your diet is as important as your yoga practice. She said that I should eat a sattvic diet (sattva means “purity” in Sanskrit). This is an organic diet rich in colour and free from all preservatives. Truthfully, this is not an easy feat in North America. But I try to stick as close as I possibly can to it and when I do, I feel amazing!

Here is one of my favorite recipes. It is vegetarian and can be prepared vegan by leaving out the dairy. It is also gluten free.

Rainbow Risotto Adapted from The Chopra Center Cookbook by Deepak Chopra Serve 8 Ingredients 1 teaspoon plus 1 teaspoon ghee or olive oil 1½ cups leeks, shallots or onions, chopped 1 tablespoon Bragg Liquid Aminos or tamari 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar 1 teaspoon black pepper 1 teaspoon dried basil 1 teaspoon dried thyme 1 teaspoon dried sage 2 cups arborio rice, rinsed and drained 6 cups hot vegetable stock 1 cup thinly sliced carrots 1 cup thinly sliced celery 1 cup zucchini, cut in half lengthwise, then into ¼-inch slices 1 cup cooked white beans or one 14-ounce can, drained and rinsed

2 cups arugula, or a mixture of spinach and arugula, coarsely torn 1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary 1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint

Add the rice and sauté, stirring constantly, until golden brown or caramelized. Lower the heat. As the rice dries out, begin to add stock one cup at a time, stirring constantly. Allow the rice to absorb the stock before adding more. Keep stirring throughout the cooking process, which will take 20 to 30 minutes in total. Taste the rice for texture. Risotto should be creamy and soft, not mushy. Be careful not to overcook or let the rice dry out.

Heat the remaining teaspoon of oil in a sauté pan over medium-high heat and add the carrots, celery, zucchini and beans. Add some stock if necessary to keep the vegetables moist. Sauté until the carrots are al dente or almost soft. Add the greens and continue to sauté until they are just wilted.

Pour all the ingredients from the sauté pan into the rice. Add the fresh herbs and gently combine. Place into a festive serving dish and garnish with parsley. In traditional risotto, fresh Parmesan or Asiago cheese is added for a creamy consistency.

Art of Giving

Giving to others for ourselves T

his world is filled with the most amazing givers—people who give their time, money and resources—and many others benefit from their largesse.

But giving can eventually take a toll on givers, as they can become depleted when they give too much. Countless times I have heard a client say, “I give and give and give with no return! When is it my turn? I’m so tired of giving—I can’t do it anymore!”

every act of giving is a gift to the Self and we have achieved true giving. I am not doing it for you—I am doing it for me and am choosing to do it, so no reciprocal energy is required. It is my choice and my gift to myself. Now I can give without depleting the Self because the very act of giving fills and lifts the Self. And it brings me a feeling of satisfaction much more quickly than waiting for my gift to be reciprocated.

These questions interest me, as I want to help my clients and myself with this conundrum.

A client I was working with said those familiar and intriguing words: “I give and give. I am so exhausted, I have no more to give. What can I do?” Suddenly a beautiful response came to me. I am sure it’s not new, but it brought a lot of clarity to that moment.

I simply asked “Why do you give?” I don’t recall his exact response, but it was along the lines of the usual answer: “Well, I want my family/partner/others to be happy and they need me, so I do what I can to help them.”

In that moment I saw a truth, a definition of my idea of giving that has helped me (and I hope him) to find balance: “We do not give to others for others; we give for ourselves. The act of giving is a gift to the Self!” I feel better about me when I give to another. I feel helpful and purposeful, and I matter. I am making a difference!

When you do something because you want to rather than because you have to, then the doing brings you joy. You are creating your own happiness and abundance, and you are not dependent on the recipient’s reaction to determine how you feel. You have moved from reaction to creation, and that is the true essence of giving—to create joy, happiness and abundance!

So how do you practice the art of giving?

You simply replace “I have to” with “I choose to.” You give yourself the gift of choice.

I will leave you with a task: for the period of one month I challenge you to choose what you give. For example, “I have to make supper” becomes “I choose to make supper because the health and happiness of my family is important to me.” This is done internally with the Self, being conscious of your decisions and choosing them for

Finding Training in the Land of Woo How to find the right course for you U

Look to professional associations for information. They often have lists of trained practitioners and qualified schools, and some offer training programs of their own.

ntil several years ago, I consciously avoided what I now affectionately call the Land of Woo. Although I am compassionate and very open minded, I considered myself far too logical and realistic to fall prey to either religious dogma or that New Age nonsense.

Then it happened. I experienced a sort of spiritual opening, which forever altered my consciousness and introduced me to a new, more energetic reality. I became aware that all was not really as it seemed, and I began to seek not only deeper answers to life’s mysteries, but also ways of integrating a newfound normal into my everyday life. This included my career, so I set out to find a way to integrate spirituality and transformation into my life’s work. For me, an interior designer, feng shui was the perfect fit, allowing me to add to my existing skills while serving others on a new level.

After I had done a good deal of reading and self-training, it became apparent that I needed more formalized training, both for my own piece of mind and for my professional credibility. So I began to look for someone who could teach me what I wanted to know. I soon learned that finding high-quality training in the Land of Woo can be challenging.

• Does your program offer ongoing support or advanced training?

Part of the difficulty in finding quality training in the Land of Woo is that the nontraditional helping professions are largely unregulated.

There is little consistency in programs, and you can find certification and teacher-training programs ranging from weekend workshops to courses that take years to complete. As a practicing yogini for nearly 20 years, I have seen the yoga community respond to this problem through the founding of selfgovernment organizations such as the Yoga Alliance. Their trailblazing efforts to bring credibility to their industry has been a model for many holistic modalities.

Partnering with Nature for Sustainability The power of relationships I magine obtaining your food and meeting your other basic needs at little or no cost, without having to purchase soil or fertilizer or pay higher water bills. Now picture nature doing most of the necessary work.

Permaculture, a term coined by Australians Bill Mollison and David Holmgren by combining the words permanent and culture, refers to a system that utilizes the forces of nature to support human needs, including the need for food, natural medicine, shelter and warmth, power sources and even tools and clothing.

Permaculture is just beginning to make waves in Alberta. In North America, many households are part of a vast grid of isolation, fed and supported by immense industrialization and consumption, where people are detached from the sources of the goods that meet their basic needs. Recently, however, we are beginning to see a transition in the way people view their place in the world and their relationship to nature.

Although permaculture can be applied to virtually any aspect of living, this article provides a brief glimpse into how we can partner with nature in a sustainable way, focusing on the power of relationships between elements placed

First, permaculture teaches us not only how to grow a wide array of food-bearing plants in a small area, but also how to do so sustainably. In fact, one long-term goal of such a system is to require less work than a conventional garden. When determining the most ecological design for a landscape such as a food forest, we look to nature for clues. Any true forest, for example, includes everything necessary for it to be self-perpetuating, without any human intervention. With permaculture we simply consider our own needs as well.

Taken further, the pond could be placed south of an ecologically designed food forest to reflect the sun, providing the system with more solar energy. Edible fish in the pond would provide both a source of food and protection against mosquito breeding. The droppings from the fish would fertilize aquatic plant species; those species could feed water fowl, and so on.

However, it is not merely about what is in the forest but also about how those pieces are placed in the landscape—their relationships to each other. Which plant species are closest to the water sources? How is the water captured and fed into the landscape? Which plants are able to grow beneath the canopy of the white spruce, and how might that spruce be supported by those plants?

An important rule in designing a permacultural system is that each element performs numerous functions, and conversely, each function is met by more than one element. In other words, if we were to introduce a greenhouse to the landscape, we would have it do more than shelter the plants it encloses. Its roof could be used to capture water for plants in the garden, while the building might also be oriented to shelter tender shrubs from wind as well as to support a grape trellis.

Likewise, we approach each function multilaterally. Using water catchment as an example, we already have the greenhouse capturing some water.There may also be a tool shed, or a driveway that could divert water in the direction of the garden. Additionally, we could use the roof of the home; build ponds, swales or dams; and mulch the growing areas to prevent evaporation. The key here is redundancy. Multiple relationships create a system of resilience, with very little human

Permaculture systems usually contain ample perennial species, which serve various soilbuilding functions. As in a natural forest, soil is built when organic debris, such as leaves and twigs, falls to the ground and decomposes.

In addition, the roots of certain plants pull mineral nutrients from deep down and deposit them where other plants can access them. In an optimal system, there is no need to clear away this material in the spring, and only minimal weeding is done throughout the summer because this layer of mulch keeps the weeds down. So by allowing this relationship between the perennials and the soil to flourish naturally, we have saved ourselves several tasks: spring cleaning, weeding, mulching by hand, tilling, adding store-bought soil and extra watering. Sustainable? You bet!

In a food-bearing landscape, forging relationships that serve many functions and having each function supported by numerous relationships produces a healthy system requiring less energy from the gardener or from petrochemical means. This web of connections is but one example of how permaculture creates a whole more powerful than the sum of its parts.
