e have all met people who seem to work really hard, yet are unfulfilled and don’t understand why they just can’t get somewhere worthwhile. It may be that they haven’t spent much time thinking about what they truly want from life. It reminds me of the adage that insanity is doing the same things over and over again, expecting different results.

The next step is setting goals that support our intention. I know through my own experiences that having detailed, clear and measurable goals definitely improves my results.

The coaches I have worked with have been dedicated to keeping me accountable; my goals and action plan are clear, measurable, tangible and documented.

My intention for this issue and every issue of our magazine is that you will discover something beneficial in these pages to assist you with living a balanced and fulfilling life. Since becoming the publisher of Guided Synergy Magazine, I have enjoyed every moment of the journey and have learned to let go of attachment to a perceived outcome. Midwives and Birth Doulas Defining the professions

I

t’s safe to say that Alberta is booming, as many couples start or expand their families! However, not all women know how midwives and birth doulas can care for and support them in their birthing experience. As a birth doula, I have realized that the roles of these professionals need defining.

Both the midwifery and the doula models of care trust in and promote birth as normal.

Registered midwives and birth doulas are experienced, trained professionals. However, the specific roles they play differ.

Midwives, considered experts in normal pregnancy and birth, provide care to mothers and babies during the prenatal, birth and postpartum periods. Midwifery care has been fully funded by Alberta Health Services since 2009. In addition to delivering babies, midwives can perform other clinical tasks, including screening their patients’ physical and emotional health, ordering tests and making referrals to specialists when needed. Their care is based on evidence and is woman centred. Midwives collaborate with each other, often working in teams, and with other health professionals.

Studies have shown that having a trained doula present during labour and birth provides the following benefits: • 50% reduction in the cesarean rate • 25% shorter labour times • 60% reduction in epidural requests • 40% reduction in Pitocin use • 30% reduction in pain medication use • 40% reduction in forceps deliveries In addition, research has shown that parents who receive care from a doula can have fewer negative feelings about their birth experience; feel more cared for, secure and self-confident; experience greater success in adapting after

to provide compassion, support and informed guidance to help their clients through this transformation. Because each situation is different, they tailor their care to the unique needs of each woman and her family.

As a professional birth doula and prenatal childbirth educator, I strive to promote and preserve maternal and infant safety during childbirth. I recognize that in areas without a practicing registered midwife, the safest option is hospital birth. I am hopeful that the Alberta Association of Midwives will grow and that an increase in registered midwives, in both urban and rural settings, will offer families safe alternatives for prenatal care and birth.

In contrast, birth doulas do not undertake medical tasks or deliver babies. As part of a woman’s birthing team, which may include a midwife, doctor and nurses, birth doulas offer continuity of care to the mother and her partner by providing information and emotional and physical support before, during and just after the birth. The unbiased information they give enables women to make informed choices about their care.

A birth doula stays with the mother throughout her labour, providing nonmedical physical and emotional comfort, and, if needed, facilitates communication with her other care providers. The fact that the doula focuses on the needs of the mother can be especially helpful in a busy hospital environment. The doula can also encourage the woman’s partner to be as involved in the birth experience as desired. Some partners report enjoying the birth experience more because they don’t feel solely responsible for coaching and supporting the mother.

Preventing Adolescent Depression and Suicide Valuing our children

I

had a conversation with some young adults about the suicide of a teenager who had reenacted the death of Kurt Cobain. I asked them how big a factor they thought Cobain’s music might have been. They replied that there were many other factors that were likely more important.

In my experience, clients who are sad or depressed may be drawn to lyrics expressing hopelessness and despair—in many different types of music. It’s easy to blame something that we find bizarre, like a certain style of music, because suicide seems so irrational and is difficult to understand. But it’s more complex than that.

What actually often happens when depression lingers and individuals cannot find satisfaction in life is that they begin to go into a kind of suicidal trance. Their focus becomes increasingly narrow, so that all they can see are the problems, the sadness and the hopelessness.

They gradually withdraw from all life support, including family and friends, and spend more time alone, experiencing the emptiness within.

It’s like slowly reducing your supply of oxygen.

The process is often so gradual that no one recognizes that the person is letting go of life.

A sudden change in someone’s behaviour is obvious, but those that happen slowly are not so easy to recognize. And when it happens during adolescence, it is extremely difficult to assess whether the withdrawal is a part of growing up or is due to problems with peers or school, hormonal changes or a natural uncertainty about the future. Children at that age often distance themselves to some degree from parents anyway, and we don’t want to pry too much into their lives out of respect for their individuality.

How, then, can we prevent such tragedies?

There are many answers, depending on each situation, but there is one overall shift that would make a difference. We must truly recognize that within every child is a soul that knows no age. A soul that may be more advanced than ours.

Further, we must treat children’s ideas and feelings with dignity and reverence. And we must get it through our heads that just because we brought them into the world, that doesn’t mean that we own them.

We are learning, but our culture and our institutions still do not honour the uniqueness of each child.

Even today, children are often treated like uncivilized beings who need to be trained. When they don’t behave as we expect them to, consequences are administered or behaviour modification instituted, without any real discussion with the child about what is really troubling him or her. This is acceptable for laboratory animals, but not for human beings.

We have a great need to be seen, to be understood and to be validated. When we are seen and understood, we grow strong enough to provide our own validation from within. Children cannot value themselves unless we value them. They are constantly trying to tell us this, but we’re not listening closely enough.

We also cannot value them as whole individuals unless we have learned to value ourselves. It’s not a question of whose fault it is; it’s a matter of how many of us will take responsibility to create the necessary changes.

Spicy Baked Feta (Feta Psiti) Ingredients 1 8-ounce slice feta cheese 2 teaspoons olive oil (optional) 2 tablespoons crushed red pepper flakes, or as needed

1 pinch dried oregano

Do you need an appetizer for a winter get-together? Just add crackers or pita wedges to this easy dish.

Place the feta in an ovenproof baking dish. Drizzle with olive oil. Cover liberally with pepper flakes, and sprinkle with oregano.

Directions Preheat an oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C).

Are you finally serious about improving your financial fitness?

itness is normally associated with physical wellness, but all wellness— physical, emotional, spiritual and financial—is just an outward manifestation of the energies, beliefs and values we hold deep in our soul. The spine of my inaugural column is healing your personal relationship with money. I’m living proof that this works, and it can work for you, too.

Have you ever made a financial decision (related to spending, debt or investment) that directly contradicted your consciously held beliefs and priorities, and that you later regretted? Everyone has done this at least once, so where’s the learning in this?

Scientific opinions vary about how much of our overall cognitive capacity we use consciously, but it’s generally agreed that the range is from 5 to 15 percent. Since our conscious brain can handle only a finite number of activities competently and life today if so rushed and complex, that means that 85 to 95 percent of our actions are being run by our subconscious.

Given that shocking fact, if we want to optimize our decision-making outcomes, we’d best get a

handle on what’s lurking in the deep recesses of our individual subconscious minds. Don’t worry, you don’t need to relive the painful details of being raised poor, feeling embarrassed because you couldn’t afford the designer clothes your friends had, or hear echoes of lies like “Money is the root of all evil.” Those may be your earliest recollections of “money differences,” but they don’t need to control your behavioural patterns anymore.

Regardless of where we’ve come from, each of us is fully empowered to decide where we are going financially. While I could regale you with anecdotes of my family’s humble beginnings or my exploration and new understanding of the root causes of financial behaviour, I will focus on providing you with an effective process that you can choose to act upon whenever you’re ready to let go of the beliefs that serve as ballast.

1. To set the stage for releasing self-limiting beliefs about money, abundance and wealth, you need a system for bypassing your conscious mind’s defenses that want to micromanage everything.

Your ego wants to stay in control, but it’s critical to let go of these fears to heal and open up to true, lasting abundance.

Since nature abhors a vacuum, two things need to happen more or less simultaneously: releasing the negative, limiting beliefs and replacing them with general, positive and limitless beliefs that support changing the old patterns that no longer serve our highest good. At the center of these negative beliefs is our perception of our own unworthiness to participate in the great abundance that the Universe has available for all of us. Our deeply held beliefs dictate every decision we make, like it or not.

3. Take mindful action consistent with your healthy new beliefs. That could be changing your investment strategy or advisor (even if that means firing yourself), speeding up the repayment of your mortgage or buying a more moderate vehicle, one that you can actually afford.

Whatever it is, you need to take some form of mindful action because the Universe is co-creative. The more you give without attachment, the more you receive—it’s one of those virtuous circles of abundance.

But how do you actually do this? There are many effective methodologies, but you need to have an open mind and open heart. Since my entrepreneurial ADHD brain has so many defenses guarding my core beliefs, what worked for me is a combination of modalities delivered by several extraordinary practitioners.

It didn’t happen overnight, but the

recent tectonic shifts in my own outlook, the transition to healthier business partners and the inflow of open-minded affluent business owners into my wealth management practice are proof positive that this stuff works. Protect Your Child from Bullying The need for intervention and support

B

ullying has been around for generations. In the past, children were taught that this type of damaging behaviour was something they had to live with, and they were given advice like “Sticks and stones can break your bones but names can never hurt you.”

In recent years, however, mounting evidence points to the need to stop bullying in its tracks. Bullying can leave a variety of psychological scars, as we see through news stories in which it has led to situations as drastic as teen suicide and homicide.

“Bullying has become a serious issue in our schools and neighbourhoods, and parents must be diligent in looking for signs of victimization,” says James Savage, executive vice president at Western Financial Group, an insurance and financial services company committed to protecting families. “Name-calling and other negative behaviours toward children and teens have proven to be every bit as damaging as ‘sticks and stones.’ Schools, parents, children and teens themselves need to stand up against these behaviours to ensure the health of our communities.”

The Government of Alberta and BullyingCanada.ca identify four types of bullying that parents and teachers should watch out for:

• Verbal—from name-calling and spreading rumours to making threats or attacking one’s race, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation;

• Physical—hurting another, touching someone in an unwanted way, stealing or destroying belongings, etc.; • Social—from humiliation and exclusion to mobbing and scapegoating;

At school, the anxiety caused by bullying can decrease a student’s ability to concentrate and learn.

At home, a bullied child or teen may become shy and withdrawn; experience physical symptoms such as stomach aches, headaches and panic attacks; or suffer insomnia, exhaustion, nightmares or over-sleeping.

The good news is that parents and peers can make a difference. Studies have shown when peers intervene, most bullying behaviours stop within ten seconds.

The more you exert yourself, the more fuel, fresh air and quality rest your body requires to recover and prepare for the next challenge. Set aside as much time for dedicated relaxation as you do for exercise.

wellness Relaxation at Home Here are some simple things you can do at home to support your relaxation and wellness goals: • Budget for a new pillow every year and rotate your mattress quarterly to improve sleep quality.

• Use flannel sheets in winter and crisp, cool cotton sheets in summer for optimal comfort.

• Make sure that electronics with lights (such as digital clocks) are not pointing towards your bed.

• If you can handle it, keep the window open a crack while you sleep to circulate fresh air.

• Take a candlelit bath before bed, either with Epsom salts to soothe sore muscles or with bubbles or bath oil; like a spa robe, a bath gives your brain permission to shut down.

• Be conscientious about your diet. Eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables.

• Keep your immune system strong and vibrant by detoxifying regularly, perhaps with a juice cleanse.

Spa-ing refers to taking treatments or therapies in a spa or wellness centre setting. It complements any fitness routine, helping the body recover, renew and rebalance—the ultimate in pampered productivity.

Spas are an ideal setting for dedicated relaxation; therapists can help you choose treatments based on your particular needs. To fully reap the benefits of a visit to a spa, unwind in a steam shower before your treatment. Just wrapping yourself in a robe sends a message to your brain that this is rewarding downtime, so give yourself time to sit and relax in the lounge.

Rushing in or out of treatments can dramatically reduce their effectiveness.

Each treatment addresses the needs of your active body. For example, the therapeutic benefits of massage are many, including ridding the body of toxins such as lactic acid, improving circulation and relieving pain and stress. Your body will not be able to fully absorb these benefits without time to process the massage’s effects. Therefore, massage is often followed by a far infrared sauna, which gives your body time

to relax. Far infrared sauna is also believed to detoxify the body much more effectively than a conventional sauna, assisting with weight loss, improving immunity and skin conditions, elevating your mood and helping you sleep.

Pedicures are underrated as a supportive spa treatment, especially given how much time we spend on our feet and how hard some sports can be on our tender toes. A proper pedicure, with massage and grooming, can do wonders for the mind as well as nurturing the very soles that make our fitness goals possible.

A body wrap is like a full-body tune-up. After all the sweating during a workout, a body wrap cleanses and nourishes the skin and body, leaving you feeling renewed, rebalanced and ready to continue along your fitness path.

wellness Setting Fitness Goals

At this time of year, many of us set a fitness goal, whether that’s establishing an exercise routine, running a 10K race or completing an extreme event like the Tough Mudder Race. Goals are not achieved instantly. Success is the result of a series of incremental changes applied with consistency and patience.

Combining a commitment to fitness and relaxation can be costly, but so are designer coffees and beautiful bottles of wine.

Incorporating spa-ing into your life might be less about finding extra money than about redefining priorities to support your goals. See the sidebar on pg. 22 for some ways to augment your relaxation efforts at home.

Also consider that many spas offer memberships to encourage you to visit frequently and take advantage of the entire facility for a reduced rate. Many people don’t realize that a spa and wellness centre can meet both your fitness and your relaxation needs, so you don’t have to fork out extra money on a gym membership. The workout space in a spa is much different than a traditional gym, but it may be just what you need.

and relaxation. A popular approach is a sauna either before or after a workout and spa treatment. Some prefer to check in after a long workday for a sauna and an hour of relaxation in a tranquility lounge. However you decide to balance fitness and relaxation, dedicated time for recovery and relaxation is essential. Let the art of spa-ing improve your well-being and help you reach your fitness goals for 2014. Your body will thank you.

Wellness—physical and mental— is perhaps more challenging than other goals because it is a state of being that must be maintained to reap its rewards. If you’re just starting your fitness journey, it’s best to begin with a small goal— incorporating a few hours of exercise into your weekly schedule or tackling the first few kilometres.

If you want to take your efforts to new levels, vary the intensity of your goals throughout the year. For example, try a 10K in the spring, a half marathon in the summer, hiking or biking in the fall and weight training or yoga in the winter. This will not only strengthen and tone different muscle groups, it will also allow you to release different energy stores, prevent the plateau effect and try new things. Remember to celebrate your milestones and keep things fun.

Tastes of Winter On a cold winter’s day, a bowl of hot soup comforts and warms those you love. Meat or cooked rice can be added to this recipe (you may need to add more liquid), or make a vegetarian version by using vegetable stock.

Lentil Soup Original recipe makes 8 servings Ingredients 2 large onions, cubed 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon minced garlic ½ teaspoon paprika 2 stalks celery, diced 3 carrots, diced 3½ cups crushed tomatoes 7 cups chicken stock 1½ cups lentils, soaked, rinsed and drained 2 bay leaves ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon ground black pepper ¾ cup white wine 1 sprig fresh parsley, chopped ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese Directions In a large stockpot, sauté the onions in oil until they are glossy. Stir in garlic, paprika, celery and carrots, and sauté for 10 minutes.

Once the vegetables have sautéed for 10 minutes, stir in tomatoes, chicken stock, lentils, bay leaves, salt and pepper. Stir well, then add the wine and bring the mixture to a boil. Slowly reduce the heat and cook for 1 hour on low to medium heat, or until the lentils are tender.

Sprinkle the soup with parsley and Parmesan (optional) before serving.

After years of wrestling with a chronic illness, Casey was inspired to develop the belief re-patterning technique: “I wondered how I could consciously flip the switch on my inner conversations, and then train my subconscious mind to do it automatically.”

An educator at the time, she was perhaps better prepared than most to make a positive change; Casey was able to apply her techniques in the classroom. After almost a dozen years, belief re-patterning evolved into what she uses consistently with adult clients in her personal practice and offers on her weekly Internet radio program and now in this book.

If you’ve ever grappled with personal doubt or inertia in your life, you know that circumventing years or even a lifetime of conditioned belief is a complex process. In

the preface of the book, Casey compares the process to approaching an exit ramp, but staying stuck in long-held fears that won’t allow your mind even to consider exiting.

“Beliefs gather in layers,” she writes. Casey recounts an exercise with one client that ended up uncovering five separate emotions, each holding that individual back. Casey references Louise Hay early on in the book, specifically her enduring classic You Can Heal Your Life. Hay House, the publishing group that Oprah Winfrey has long been a fan and promoter of, is “Hay Home” to enduring authors such as Dr. Wayne Dyer, Esther and Jerry Hicks and medium Sylvia Browne. Casey joins the ranks of those writers with Belief Re-patterning, continuing Hay’s mission to enlighten people and improve their lives.

In a recent interview with Casey, I mentioned the seemingly congested— although nonetheless fine—company this book falls into: The Law of Attraction, The Magic Of Thinking Big and arguably the granddaddy of them all, The Power Of Positive Thinking. You will certainly see familiar words from those books in hers: forgiveness, choice, possibilities. She was quick to acknowledge those great manuals and was thankful to be considered in that company.

In Casey’s case, it was the intersection of seemingly disconnected circumstances that inspired the educator to compile a comprehensive manual for “flipping the switch” from self-defeating negative thoughts to “positive thinking auto-pilot.”

Directions In a medium bowl, combine Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, soy sauce, chili powder, garlic and hot pepper sauce. Place chicken in sauce, and turn once to coat. Marinate for 30 minutes at room temperature, or cover and refrigerate for several hours.

Heat oil in a large skillet over high heat. Add chicken strips to the pan, and sauté for 5 minutes.

Let’s take a closer look at what sound is.

Science has shown that everything is constantly moving and vibrating at the atomic level. Sound is a type vibrational energy. It affects how matter itself vibrates.

Sound is a physical energy that pushes atoms and molecules around as it travels in a wave through a medium, like air—and like you! It travels through the more fluid parts of your body four and a half times faster than through the air, and twelve times faster than through your bones.

Physically, rhythm changes your heartbeat, breathing and brainwaves. It takes only minutes for the music playing in the grocery store or the mall to change your heartbeat, whether you’re paying attention to it or not. We have no off switch for this response. And whenever we play music or sing together, our bodies release feel-good hormones that keep us healthy and bond us into communities.

The right types of sounds can soothe us.

Why do people relax when they sit by a babbling brook? What is so mesmerizing about listening to the ocean’s waves? Why are water fountains found practically everywhere these days? We are intuitively drawn to these sounds. The fact is, they are some of the healthiest sounds for human beings.

When you hang out around water sounds for a while, they affect your heartbeat, your

slows down. And you move into a relaxed state, dissolving many symptoms of stress.

While you listen to the brook’s bubbling water, enjoying your relaxed state, do you notice the birds singing? Birdsong is another healthy sound for humans. Its high frequencies charge the nervous system. You never know when birds are going to sing; they are totally unpredictable. The human brain loves patterns and constantly looks for them, but there are no patterns in birdsong. As a result, the brain becomes alert, focused and productive.

There are two principles to remember as you work with sound to support your health. First, low-frequency sounds and slow rhythms discharge emotional energy from your nervous system. Second, high-frequency

You can try this at home by softly playing recordings of water sounds and birdsong.

Research Report: Circle of Life Hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the treatment of autism spectrum disorder

O

2xy-wellness, in Red Deer, Alberta, is participating in ground-breaking research involving hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and the treatment of autism spectrum disorder. They are working with a boy named Xaven, Xaven’s family and James Neubrander, a medical doctor from New Jersey who specializes in the biomedical treatment of autism. The project is called “Circle of Life” to honour Xaven’s grandfather, who left an inheritance that provides funding to help Xaven fulfill his potential.

Over 18 months, Xaven will undergo more than 300 HBOT treatments, or “dives.” During each treatment, which lasts an hour and fifteen minutes, he receives 100 percent oxygen at 1.5 atmospheric pressure in a hard-shell Sechrist Monoplace chamber. Our treatments are usually one hour, but Dr. Neubrander requested the additional fifteen minutes to compensate for Red Deer’s high altitude.

Xaven’s mother, Moira, does much of the analysis work, directed by Dr. Neubrander, and is the backbone to our success. She and her husband track changes in over one hundred different markers related to areas such as focus, comprehension, memory, language use, independence, cooperation, calmness, flexibility and appropriate behaviour, among others.

After the first forty treatments, Xaven has shown significant improvements in several areas. He reads faster and more expressively, engages more with the story and remembers more of its events. His arithmetic skills have also improved. Moira says, “His subtraction is quicker, more consistent. He can verbally produce the answers before I’ve written them down. More often, I’m hearing ‘This is easy!’”

Xaven’s printing is smaller and more controlled, and his drawing skills have developed. Moira reports, “He drew a gingerbread man independently that wasn’t a stick figure! He drew, without prompting, a picture with a tortoise, a bunny, the ground and the sun. Before, he would have been satisfied with just a tortoise. He made a point of delivering his picture to his teacher.”

Xaven is no longer withdrawn and, as his father says, “has more bounce to him.”

He engages with others at a new level. His grandmother notes that Xaven’s conversations are clearer than ever before and he asks questions about what her life, such as “How are the cattle doing?” and “How’s Lola [her dog]?” Moira describes a night when she and her husband were going out: “Xaven piped up, ‘Are you going on a date?’ and when we returned, he asked, ‘How was your date?’”

His executive functioning has matured.

Moira notes, “Xaven has started to ask ‘What day is it?’ and then ‘What does that mean?—his way of asking what’s going to be happening today. It used to be that asking him to collect the wastebaskets on garbage day was met with tears and resistance.

Recently, when the garbage truck was coming and we’d forgotten to get the garbage to the curb, he raced around, helping.

He’s happier to do his schooling and transitions from one task to another easily.”

Xaven is asking thoughtful questions, such as “How was the mall made?” and “Did the developers get help?”

He attempts to give explanations and perceives others’ strategies, like his dad letting him win a video game. He tells jokes modelled on ones told to him.

The improved focus seemed to taper off around the thirtieth treatment. “This might parallel how he’s getting bored easily,” Moira says. “The day after he finished his fortieth dive, he challenged, ‘What are we going to do besides stand around here?’ Whereas before he’d amuse himself in the chamber, now he wants to converse with the technicians.”

Xaven is working to adapt to new situations and try new things, like using chopsticks. When told that his bed would be replaced with a bunk bed, he approached his dad in a deliberately nonconfrontational way: “I heard I was getting a bunk bed.”

Given the improvements Xaven has shown so far, this gift from his grandfather appears to hold great promise. While Xaven knew intellectually that his grandfather had passed away, it wasn’t until he stood in his grandfather’s kitchen and realized that the man he had known all his life couldn’t give him any more goodnight hugs that his face crumpled. The deep pressure of the hyperbaric chamber is, in a way, Xaven’s grandfather giving him a hug that will help him gain all that he can from life.

Tastes of Winter Have you made a resolution to improve your diet in the new year? This recipe is a great way to start!

Quinoa and Black Beans Ingredients 1 teaspoon vegetable oil 1 onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped ¾ cup uncooked quinoa 1½ cups vegetable broth 1 teaspoon ground cumin ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper salt and pepper to taste 1 cup frozen corn kernels 2 15-ounce cans black beans, rinsed and drained ½ cup chopped fresh cilantro Directions Heat the oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the onion and garlic, and sauté until lightly browned.

Mix quinoa into the saucepan and cover with vegetable broth. Season with cumin, cayenne pepper, salt and pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 20 minutes.

Stir frozen corn into the saucepan, and continue to simmer about 5 minutes until heated through.

Mix in the black beans and cilantro.

A Dedication to Taoist Tai Chi Experience the benefits of this exercise and art form

hirteen years ago I began my journey with the arts of Taoist Tai Chi™. I am now an instructor and dedicated member of the Fung Loy Kok Institute of Taoism. I was first attracted to Taoist Tai Chi because of its beautiful flowing movements; I have stayed for many reasons, including a lovely community of people, the chance to learn an ever-evolving art form and consistent improvement in my health.

The Taoist Tai Chi arts, developed in Toronto in the 1970s by Moy Lin Shin, are based on a rich Taoist tradition. The body and mind are inextricably linked; they can’t be separated. The goal of this exercise form is to return both the body and the mind to their original state. Each of the movements helps you regain clarity, stillness, and wisdom in your mind and create a relaxed, balanced, healthy body.

Taoist Tai Chi goes beyond exercise and highly values volunteerism and community. Instructors, who receive regular training at their own expense and must undergo annual accreditation, are volunteers. Membership dues are used to run and develop the organization and allow members to take part in activities and classes.

Taoist Tai Chi also helps concentration and memory retention—learning the 108 movements is good for your brain.

The most noticeable health benefit I experienced when I began to practice the form regularly was the cessation of tension headaches.

My overall fitness level benefits as well; I am not a sporty person but through my practice I continue to feel physically fit. I have better flexibility and balance, as well as improved circulation and body awareness. I also love the grace of the movements and the sense of flow I feel in the form.

We invited everyone to join us in recognizing not only the hard work of so many wonderful club members but also in celebrating the choices we make to be healthy, to inspire health in others, to be open to growth and to share the wealth of knowledge provided to us.
