A

couple of years ago while on vacation with my husband and a group of friends, I decided it was time to change my attitude and be more open to new experiences. I had a strong desire to reclaim some form of independence and freedom in my life. I realized too that I had not yet formulated the infamous ‟bucket list” that so many people seemed to have, and I began to seek out the many things life has to offer.

Of course, once I expanded my perspective an opportunity presented itself almost immediately.

“When I wave the flag, pull really hard on this cord and your sail will turn towards the beach,” said the Mexican tour guide as he explained to me how to land the parasail that I was strapped into. “Are you ready, Miss?

Are you ready?” he asked. I nodded and within seconds I was sailing high above the Pacific Ocean along the coastline near Puerto Vallarta.

Once I got over my initial apprehension, pure adrenaline rushed through my veins and I was overtaken with emotion. I felt so free! The view was breathtaking and the salty ocean winds pushed tears from my eyes straight back into my hair—happy, excited, freakin’ out tears! The entire experience touched my soul in a way that I could never have imagined.

It’s like listening to music on an iPod or a local radio station versus going to a live performance—singing along in the confines of your car or secretly in your office cubicle is a much different experience than seeing your favorite artist perform live. A few years ago, I saw Bette Midler in Las Vegas, and I was deeply touched by her performance. I did not anticipate the effect her music would have on me. The experience I had that night watching her show was euphoric.

Profound experiences like these don’t happen every day and are truly a gift when they do. Tracy Perrson might agree, as she tells us about her life-changing experience at the Chopra Center University in “Healing

M

any tears are shed in Samantha Orthlieb’s office, where the Calgary herbalist has helped thousands of clients to heal and thrive for more than a decade.

“Crying means they’re comfortable and I’m all for it. It’s a safe place to do it,” says Orthlieb, 46, the owner of Nurture Health and Wellness and author of Opening the Senses of the Soul: Healing into Wholeness with Nature’s Vibrational Medicine.

Orthlieb’s practice is also about honesty, and anyone who has read her book knows she’s been candid with her audience. “To me, it’s healer, heal thyself,” she says. “I felt I had to come clean with my readers if I wanted them to be honest with themselves.”

The former marketing and communications professional battled health issues in the 1980s and 1990s, when she was employed in competitive work environments, first at Toshiba in Toronto and then at Canadian Airlines in Calgary.

Although her career might have seemed a dream one, her body was telling her otherwise.

While in Toronto, she experienced persistent abdominal discomfort. It puzzled the many doctors she saw, who offered a variety of diagnoses.

Eventually she met a doctor who could give the pain a name: endometriosis, a female condition relatively unknown at the time. Laparoscopic surgery gave her

some relief, but it didn’t last.

Orthlieb decided to return home to Calgary in 1993, and with her parents help she underwent a second surgery with an endometriosis specialist in Bend, Oregon. Pain free once more, she spent a few months recuperating before landing a job as the marketing and communications manager at Canadian Airlines.

“They were in a lot of financial difficulty at the time, so it was a very stressful workplace,” she says. “They were scrambling and they were looking to me to bring this wonderful advertising campaign that would save them.”

The pressures of the job began to affect her health. The pain crept back, and to numb the discomfort, Orthlieb began drinking. “I was trying to get through my workday and trying to just ignore that my body was not happy,” she says.

On a company trip to Japan, Orthlieb went out for an evening with business associates. She’d had little to eat on her vegetarian diet and was being plied with plum wine. Feeling the effects, she returned to her hotel with a fellow worker. They went to her room and the inconceivable happened: she was raped.

“I remember waking up and thinking, ‘Either I’ve got to get out of this job and totally change my life or I’m going to end up dead. Something’s going to happen if I don’t change my life,’” says Orthlieb, who shares this story in her book.

It was a turning point. She left her job a few months later, in 1996, citing health reasons. Though she sought counselling for her pain, she told no one about the incident in Japan that she now refers to as yet another wake-up call. Her former work colleagues, who couldn’t understand why anyone would leave such a prime job, chalked up her departure to a nervous breakdown.

Orthlieb vowed to change her life and turned her focus to natural health.

She worked in a health food store for a period, making little money but learning a great deal about the products. Her journey continued with training at the Wild Rose College of Natural Healing in Calgary, where she was certified as a master herbalist in 2001. Along the way she married and had two sons, Connor, now 15, and Cole, 13, but the marriage ended six years later as she and her husband grew apart.

Seeking practical experience after her training in herbology, Orthlieb was mentored by Annette Bossert, a Calgary herbalist of more than 20 years’ experience. Orthlieb worked at Bossert’s downtown clinic for the next two years.

“The biggest thing she taught me was how to live in my heart,” says Orthlieb.

“She got me on the road to understanding the psychological aspect of disease—the body–mind connection between disease and the person who has it.”

Bossert introduced her to the Jungian concepts of archetypes and archetypal behaviour, and from there Orthlieb expanded her training, delving into books such as Sacred Contracts by Caroline Myss and Chakras and Their Archetypes: Uniting Energy Awareness and Spiritual Growth by Ambika Wauters. She gained a new understanding of the psychological connection to disease and how working with its root cause, rather than treating symptoms, is critical to good health.

Her plan of treatment may include diet and lifestyle changes as well as herbs, homeopathy and flower and crystal essences.

“The great thing about using plants and the other forms of vibrational medicine is that they get past the psyche and the ego,” says Orthlieb. “So at the same time I’m using them physically on somebody, they’re also doing something emotional and mental to that person and freeing them of blocks in the body, the wounding that they have, so they can shift their beliefs, which in turn shifts the body.”

Orthlieb’s clients have experienced remarkable health changes, including having cancers recede and chronic diseases disappear. But on a deeper level, more profound changes have given many individuals new purpose in their lives.

As she’s helped thousands of clients heal, Orthlieb’s own health has improved and her intuition has heightened.

She tells her personal story of how her endometriosis represented a rejection of her own feminine creativity and left her feeling powerless.

Although she calls herself a suburban medicine woman, Orthlieb hopes to bring nature closer to her clients in the future. Last summer she purchased a ten-acre property in the foothills northwest of Cochrane, just a five-minute drive down the road from where she boards her black Arabian mare, Quest. There she will offer workshops on topics such as herbal permaculture and partnering with nature and horses.

“It’s kind of hard to teach people to connect with nature in the city. Everyone’s trying to tame nature, they want it to look a certain way,” she says, adding that in the country, “it’s a whole different feeling energetically so you get a much deeper connection.”

She’s seen the transformation in her own sons, who as typical teenagers grumble at going out to the country, but once there have a great time building bonfires, seeing stars not visible in the city sky and learning about plant life. Even her dogs, Maya and Jasmine, have a sensory field day running around and sampling plants that they intuitively know won’t harm them.

As a practitioner of one of the oldest forms of medicine, yet one that has been largely abandoned in favour of science and reason, Orthlieb senses a tide of change.

Since the financial crash of 2008, she has felt a shift taking place and has seen the changes firsthand with her clients. And the awakening continues in 2012.

“I do think we all have to start being accountable for how we’re living on the earth and how we treat ourselves, our bodies.

Those two simple things will really eradicate a lot of health and wellness issues that we have.”

INGREDIENTS 4½ cups rolled oats ½ cup sunflower seeds ½ cup ground flax ½ cup sesame seeds ½ cup chopped walnuts ½ cup chopped almonds ½ cup pumpkin seeds ½ cup honey ½ cup olive oil

INGREDIENTS 1 lb. ground turkey 1 egg 1/8 cup oatmeal 1 small onion, chopped 3 or 4 garlic cloves, minced 1 stalk of celery, chopped 4 fresh mushrooms, chopped ½ pepper, any colour, chopped Oregano, basil and parsley, fresh or dried, to taste 1 398 ml. can of tomato sauce

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 275°F. In a large roaster, mix together oats, sunflower seeds, flax, sesame seeds, walnuts, almonds and pumpkin seeds.

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350°F. Mix ground turkey, egg, oatmeal, onion, garlic, celery, mushrooms, pepper and seasonings in a bowl. Place mixture into loaf pan. Spread tomato sauce on top and bake for about an hour.

Place honey and olive oil in a small pan. Stir together well while heating. Do not boil.

Where Are Your Habits Leading You? Shift your habits for success Y

ou are an accumulation of your habits.

From how you get out of bed, how you shower, how you dress, how you walk, sit, and talk, how you respond to the world, how you act in front of others and how you think, you are living out your habits. Habits are necessary. They free up your mind so you can concentrate on how to survive every day. You don’t have to think about how to drive your car so you can be on the lookout for danger while you are driving. You don’t have to think about how to walk so you can concentrate on where you are going.

Unfortunately, habits can also keep you locked in self-destructive patterns, which will limit your success. To become successful you will need to drop bad habits and develop new ones that are in line with the life you want to live. People do not suddenly appear in the life they want to live; habits determine their outcome! What are the habits you have that are keeping you from achieving your goals? Are you always running late? Do you return phone calls within 24 hours? Do you get enough sleep? Do you speak clearly and look people directly in their eyes? Do you eat healthy meals? Ask others what they observe about you and make a list of all the behaviors that keep you from success.

Imagine what your life would be like if all those habits were their productive counterparts. What would your life be like if you ate healthy meals, exercised and got enough sleep? What would your life be like if you saved money, stopped using credit cards and paid cash for everything?

What would your life be like if you stopped procrastinating, overcame your fears and began networking with people in your field?

Write down the more productive habits and visualize your life as it would be if they were your habits right now.

Decide to develop four of your new habits each year, one for each quarter. Create a method that will support your new habit.

What will keep you motivated? How will you remind yourself of your new habit?

You could write it down on a card that you keep with you and read over several times a day. You could make it a part of your daily visualization. You could enlist the help of an accountability partner who also has habits to change. Be specific about the steps that you are willing to take in order to drop an old habit and adopt a new one. Do not be vague

about how you will change your habits. Spell it out for yourself so that you can recognize situations that call for you to act out your new habit.

Once you have picked your habit for that quarter, make a 100% commitment to stick to it. Do not tempt yourself by making it optional every time a situation arises. If your new habit is to go to bed by 10:00 p.m., then go to bed at 10:00 p.m. even if you are not feeling tired. Just go there and relax, read a book, visualize or meditate, but don’t compromise on your new habit. If you make an exception once, you are more likely to make an exception the next time and soon you will be back to your old habits.

Healing Travel a pleasant and welcome surprise O

ne of the many perks of my education through Chopra Center University has been the travel. Chopra Center events are hosted in luxurious hotels or resorts in locations such as Whistler and Chicago, in the Colorado mountains or by the ocean in Carlsbad, California. Chopra Center’s home base in Carlsbad has been dubbed “the sweet spot of the universe” by David-ji, past dean of the school.

If you would like to experience healing, wellness, travel, pampering, spiritual learning, nutrition—and did I mention pampering?—all at once, consider the Perfect Health program at Chopra Center, set in the middle of the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad. The accommodations at La Costa, which feels like a village separate from the city, range from gorgeous villas to quaint hotel rooms. The grounds contain professional tennis courts, a breathtaking golf course, amazing restaurants, unique shopping and two of the most famous spas

in North America: the Chopra Center for Well-Being and La Costa Salon and Spa. As I write this, I feel a twinge of longing for the warm California sunshine, the smell of the orange trees and the decadent Ayurvedic spa treatments. Sigh.

I was required to attend the Perfect Health program as part of my Chopra teacher training. Was I in for a surprise! Although I went for my training, I discovered how much I personally needed to attend this program. It was comprised of seven days of yoga, meditation, Ayurveda lifestyle classes and daily spa treatments. On the first day I met with a certified Ayurvedic doctor, who went over my history and created a regimen of supplements, diet, and massages that worked with my body type, directing me towards creating balance in mind, body and spirit. We began each day with a practice of the Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga and then moved into a 20- to 30-minute meditation.

From Monday to Friday, we attended a morning class on creating balance in all areas of life.

After a delicious Ayurvedic lunch, we were off to the spa for our panchakarma (Ayurvedic body treatment). I was totally pampered by the therapists, and each spa treatment was relaxing, invigorating, or calming, depending on my personal needs.

20- to 30-minute meditation. I would then wander back to my room and sit on the patio, gazing at the gorgeous view of palm trees and birds of paradise and eagerly anticipating the next day.

All of the events I have attended with the Chopra Center have been healing.

Travelling to the destinations, eating the delicious meals, meeting new friends (for life!) and absorbing the ancient wisdom that has been revised into a language we can relate to—every aspect has been life changing. And I’ve discovering how rejuvenating travelling can be. My next stop is the Seduction of Spirit program in Whistler. Anyone care to join me?

Tell Me a Story be where your feet are O

nce upon a time, in a kingdom far, far away …

Many wonderful stories begin this way. These words assure us that what we are reading is nothing more than fiction meant to entertain us. Unfortunately the stories we constantly tell ourselves in our own minds give us no such clues to whether what we are thinking is reality or fiction.

is happening in this moment and reacts accordingly, with negative emotions such as anger and resentment and with physical tension.

If upsetting thoughts are constantly on our minds, chronic physical conditions can result.

I have come to realize that about 90 percent of what I am thinking about at any given moment isn’t actually happening; I am lost in a story from my past or creating one about the future. I am not in the moment of now, or the time I like to call “where my feet are.” While my feet are always in the moment of now, my mind rarely is.

When we are focusing our attention on our past experiences or creating a scenario around future ones, we are not fully in the most important moment—the one we are physically in. Many clients have revealed to me that this mind chatter affects their ability to feel peaceful or to achieve the quiet necessary to enjoy effective meditation, because their brains are so busy thinking.

This can create a great deal of stress.

In addition, we can become so lost in stories from the past that they come to define us. They move from being something that has happened to us to being the force that decides who we are and how we view the world.

I have found that there are two ways we become lost in our thoughts: when we are thinking about something that has already happened and when our minds construct stories of their own. I am going to address the first, as I have found that getting relief from past experience is a vital first step to achieve healing.

Happiness will never be found in your story, only in your newest and grandest decision about yourself and others. This may mean having to tell yourself, with regard to a lot of things that have occurred, “That was ‘then’ and this is ‘now.’” None of those things have any bearing on what is occurring in this moment.

When we replay an experience or event in our heads over and over, we relive it.

As we continue to focus on it, we feel like it never ends, and resolution never seems to be achieved. An event that has happened only once in reality feels like it has happened countless times! Even though it is repeating only in our minds, the physical body responds as though it

I realized first of all that I often recreate a story simply for my own entertainment, to try to bring myself solace, to justify something, or even to feel powerful by imagining myself saying what I would have liked to have

Our stories are made up of incidents large and small, spread out across a lifetime. We become the sum total of these encounters— unless we do not. At some point we may let go of an idea that we hold about ourselves and others, because we realize we have to if we wish to get on with life.

said at the time. Sometimes I build worst-case scenarios or speculate on what others were thinking or saying. But no matter what their content, all of these stories are imaginary, because they aren’t happening anymore!

When we consciously decide not to give any energy to these stories, when we literally think about what it is we are thinking about, we free ourselves from unnecessary pain and suffering. By allowing ourselves to exist in the moment and by freeing our minds to learn and observe, we experience a sense of peace that is impossible to achieve when our minds are so busy with the stories they are creating.

So allow yourself to let go of the story. Simply be in your physical world, experiencing and observing your life and the people in it, unadulterated by those once-upon-a-time stories in your head.

chose a spot among the couple hundred attendees of the karma yoga practice.

Near the large trees at the edge of the park, I rolled my mat out on the grass beside a lady who sat wrapped in a red blanket.

She was quietly reading a book, capturing this time of peace and silence before the practice began.

I removed my flip-flops, sat down on my mat cross-legged and closed my eyes, enjoying the scents on the breeze and the coolness of the shade under the city park trees. The musicians, singing softly, performed mike checks as the remaining participants straggled in and set up their mats.

Opening my eyes, I saw the playground just off in the distance in front of me, and I mused that I could have brought my kids.

They would have loved the playground and the live music, and they could have joined in the practice whenever they chose. Oh well.

I’d had no idea the location would be suited to them, and this time on my own was a nice reprieve from our summer-holiday schedule.

Two young children ran from the playground towards the woman in the red blanket. They spoke in a language I couldn’t quite place. Then she leaned towards me and remarked, “I hope they don’t disturb you.”

I laughed, because while I was thinking how clever she was to include her children in such a lovely event and child-friendly location, she was concerned about them interfering with my practice. I shared with her how I was wishing I’d brought my own kids.

We enjoyed a challenging morning of yoga outdoors and joined together for the partner poses. Her children were simply lovely, so calm and quiet, exploring the playground and returning for a couple of poses and a cuddle in the red blanket.

After savasana, the final resting pose, she leaned over once again and said she hoped her children had not bothered me too much

with their talking. I explained that most days I do yoga and meditate with my own children next to me, in my lap, on my back or crawling under my downward dog, or fighting in the other room or cranking the volume on the TV. I told her how beautifully behaved her children were.

While in savasana I had been aware of her kids talking, but I was so captivated by the music, the breeze, the stillness of my own body and mind and the peacefulness of the time on the grass that any other sounds around me were absorbed by my own blissful surrender.
