hat do women want? Essentially, they just want to be happy. Some want it all: content children, a fulfilling career, a beautiful home and a loving husband. My observations tell me that sometimes women miss the boat when it comes to the loving husband part and they end up in deep water, not really knowing how they got there. Gwen Randall-Young has some great advice in her article, “What Do Men Need?” (p. 27). So, ladies, consider Gwen’s advice and remember on February 14th that Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be all about you! Journalist Eric Plummer conducted an interview for Guided Synergy to bring us a snapshot of the lives of two Peace Country residents: Steve Brousson, owner of Homesteader Health stores in Fort St. John, Prince George and Grande Prairie, and Christie McLeod, manager of the family-owned Health Hut store in the Prairie Mall in Grande Prairie. Both passionate about preserving their own health and the health of the people who live and work in this northern region of Western Canada, they are united in their message. Let “Healthy Body, Mind & Soul,” be the first article you read and share with family, friends and colleagues. Guided Synergy Magazine published a story in Autumn/Winter 2008 titled “Help Stop Bill C-51,” shortly after the bill was introduced in April 2008. Our story outlined the potential impact the proposed bill might have had on the natural health industry. Many Canadians opposed the changes to the Food and Drug Act and the bill was stopped. Revised versions of this bill have since been introduced; the latest is Bill C-36, the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act. According to a news release posted on Health Canada’s website on December 14th, 2010, “the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act … has been passed by Parliament and, upon Royal Assent, would become law.” For those who are looking for more information on this hot topic, visit the following websites: Natural Health Products Protection Association (nhppa.org), Canadian Health Food Association (chfa.ca), The Charter of Health Freedom (charterofhealthfreedom.org) and Health Canada (www.hc-sc.gc.ca).

I love the message in Shelyn Somani’s article, “Lighten Up!” which offers some great advice as we embark on a brand new year. While I write this editorial and reflect on my intentions for this issue, I see Shelyn’s words: “You set your intention and let go of the arrow, but you are not attached to the outcome, knowing that the outcome is always perfectly what it should be.” Our Winter 2011 issue is full of outstanding articles from contributors across the region and yes, I am delighted with the outcome! Chocolate Lover’s Tart Submitted by Sarah Harwood

Let’s face it, we all have cravings. This rich, velvety tart lacks eggs, brown sugar, butter, or white flour, so you can go ahead and enjoy this one without nearly as much guilt. The filling of this recipe makes an excellent chilled pudding as well - top it with fresh sliced strawberries or raspberries. Besides the awesome taste, I love this dessert because it comes together quickly and dirties very few dishes. Serves 8 - 10. (Adapted from Terry Walters’ Clean Food) Ingredients CRUST 2 cups pecans (or other nut) 1 cup brown rice flour 1/4 cup cocoa powder 1/4 teaspoon sea salt 1/3 cup canola oil (I used peanut oil) 1/3 cup maple syrup Pinch of cayenne (optional) Pinch of cinnamon (optional) FILLING 12-1/2-ounces firm silken tofu 1/2 cup cashew butter (125 grams) 1/4 cup maple syrup 1 teaspoon vanilla extract pinch of sea salt 1 cup semisweet dark chocolate chips block of dark chocolate for shaving (I like 70%) Preheat oven to 350 F. Lightly oil an 11-inch tart pan. PREPARING CRUST Combine pecans, rice flour, cocoa and salt (and cayenne and cinnamon if using) in food processor to make a crumb-like mixture. Add oil and syrup and process to form a moist ball. Place ball in tart pan and press to form crust. Pierce several times with a fork and bake 15 minutes. Remove from oven and set on wire rack to cool completely. MAKING FILLING Whip tofu in food processor until smooth. Add cashew butter, syrup, vanilla and salt and process until well combined. In a small pan over low heat, melt chocolate chips, then add to food processor and blend until combined.

Book Review

The Voluptuous Vegan: More than 200 Sinfully Delicious Recipes for Meatless, Eggless, and Dairy-Free Meals by Myra Kornfeld and George Minot Review by Sarah Harwood

T

hose who have waited so patiently over the past couple of months for me to relinquish all fifty-or-so veg cookbooks back to the public library system know that I’m a bit of a hopeless cookbook hoarder. Usually I’m pretty conscientious about due dates, but I’ve been known to rack up late fines buying time to try “just one more” recipe. Almost always, I end up buying these books. The Voluptuous Vegan was added to my collection in this way several years ago, and it’s still one of my favourites. Myra Kornfeld and George Minot deserve many high-fives for writing a gourmet, easy-to-follow cookbook for people who are looking for more than the redundant lasagna, guacamole or hummus formulas that fill too many vegan cookbooks. “We all need to feed our souls,” Kornfeld writes in the book’s introduction. “A person who thinks about satisfying his or her soul is likely to feel more nourished and healthy than someone who treats nourishment as a mere technical problem. ... The Voluptuous Vegan is about pampering yourself with luscious, healthy food.”

Crimson Cabbage Borscht Submitted by Sarah Harwood Beets. For the most part, you either loathe ‘em or you love ‘em. I happen to belong to the latter camp. There’s something about bright food that simply makes a person’s heart sing, right? Borscht is traditionally a hearty winter soup, but I figure we’re allowed to flex these rules up here. P.S. Add a diced apple in with the rest of the veggies for a nice sweet undertone. This recipe was taken from the book Voluptuous Vegan. Ingredients A glug or two of olive oil 2 medium onions, cut into small dice 1 14.5 ounce can chopped tomatoes 1/4 medium-sized head of cabbage (red or green) 1 bay leaf 3 medium beets, peeled and cut into small dice 1 medium carrot, sliced thinly in half-moons (Caving to convenience, I made mine with a hand full of the pre-julienned carrots you get in a bag.)

Adventurous recipes are organized by menus that include appetizers, balanced main courses, side dishes and desserts. One of the droolinducing menus I (and many a dinner-party guest) have fallen in love with is mesclun with raspberry vinaigrette, seitan bourguignonne, and mashed potatoes with parsnips (p. 166). Accompanying each menu is a particularly practical “cook’s notes” summary that provides a game plan for simultaneously preparing the menu items so that everything is completed together, just in time for supper. As well, the book’s glossary of terms, ingredients and techniques is valuable and fascinating. Did you know orecchiette means “ear-shaped pasta”? When should you use a roll cut versus a chiffonade?

1 small potato (I recommend red), peeled and cut into 1/2-inch cubes

For cooks who like a little challenge, a clean design and a lot of flavour in the kitchen, this book is a must have. Order it from the library at your own risk!

Warm the olive oil in a big pot. Add the onions and sauté over mediumlow heat for 10 minutes, or until the onions are softened and just starting to brown. Add the tomatoes and cabbage and cook about 5 minutes, until the cabbage is wilted and the tomatoes have reduced.

Sarah hails from a ridiculously small logging and mining town in central British Columbia that fills her with nostalgia and an affinity for the unusual. In May 2010, she and her good friend Shelyn Somani created GP Vegan Cooking Classes, and they’ve been teaching the joys of botanical-based cooking ever since. Visit their Facebook page at facebook.com/gpvegan.

1 1/2 cups white kidney beans or 1 15-ounce can 6 cups vegetable stock Salt to taste 2 tablespoons mirin or sherry 2 cups chopped beet greens (from 3 medium beets) or Swiss chard Black pepper 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice Vegan sour “cream” or yogurt and chopped herbs for topping

Add the bay leaf, beets, carrots, potatoes, beans, and stock. Cover and bring the liquid to a boil. Lower the heat to a simmer, add a teaspoon of salt, and simmer, partially covered, for 15 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender. Add the mirin and beet greens and cook an additional 5 minutes. Finish the soup by adjusting the salt to taste and add black pepper and lemon juice. Serve with a generous scoop of “sour cream” and chopped herbs. With a wedge of crusty bread (check out your local Farmers’ Market) and a salad, and you’ve got yourself a pretty awesome meal.

Neat-O! If you ever make a soup and find it a little, well, boring, first check that you’ve salted it enough. You could try adding a little Dijon mustard, a sprinkle of good paprika, lemon juice, or a tiny splash of vinegar. The acid in the mustard, lemon juice, or the vinegar can really perk things up. Home made croutons as a garnish really hit the spot and make you seem fancy as well.

Winds and the Wheel Sacred Roles Part II Winds are also known as Roles and are a practical guide for manifestation. ~ Okwaho Lablanc

I

n an article entitled “Winds and the Wheel: Facing Challenges and Integrating Life Lessons,” which appeared in the Fall 2010 issue of Guided Synergy, I talked about the eight Winds on the Medicine Wheel and how they affect our daily lives on a cosmological level. I mentioned that the Winds are also Roles that live inside of us. In Shamanism, we look to these Roles in order to find our medicine, that which empowers us. Although the concept is an old one, these Roles are still active today in our daily lives. They are located in the eight directions of the Wheel, starting in the northeast and going clockwise. Firekeepers (northeast) are passionate, impulsive, idealistic and full of vitality. They get all fired up about things and can inspire others to greatness. In Sweat Lodges, they are the caretakers of the Sacred Fire. They believe in magic and that wishes can come true, if we believe and do our part in creating them. Visionaries (east) can see the potential in things. They often look to the future with enthusiasm. They like preparing, planning and organizing with clarity and they make good managers. They can be the prophets of their time, foreseeing the outcome of present actions on a larger scale.

past and are the ones out on the frontlines fighting for what they believe in today. Nomads (southwest) like to travel. They are good at making connections with others and can do this wherever they are. They also have the ability to perceive links between things that others overlook. In the past, Nomads were the ones who brought news and trade items from one tribal village to another. They helped to keep the tribes connected and offered a wider, more objective perspective. Dreamers (west) are good at manifesting. They often have vivid night dreams and may feel like they are sleepwalking during the day. Dreaming and waking are not so separate for them. Dreamers often dream of others and are able to help them in some way. They may have a hard time in the modern world because our society does not appreciate the importance of dreaming as much as our Ancestors did.

Peacekeepers (southeast) often find themselves immersed in conflicts, acting as mediators who helps bring resolution. They have a strong sense of justice and are capable of being impartial. They have a knack for seeing beyond the conflict, bringing resolution to a situation and turning enemies into friends.

Initiators (northwest) are those people who push your buttons. They are here to test where you are with certain issues in your life. Many people get angry or irritated with Initiators, but in Shamanism, we learn to look at what is being triggered in us and do the work to resolve it. Initiators often act as mirrors for others. What we don’t like in them is often what we don’t want to see in ourselves. Initiators are also known as Sacred Clowns. In the past, they were the ones who were allowed to make fun of the solemn ceremonies, to help things from getting too serious. Today, they may become entertainers, clowns or other kinds of performers.

Warriors (south) have good instincts. They are action oriented and often work in physical jobs. They also have a strong sense of truth and will fight for what they believe in. They were the protectors and hunters in the

Healers (north) are good at caring for the sick, whether physically, emotionally, mentally or spiritually. They may also dig up old wounds in order to facilitate healing. Healers of today may have an interest in herbs and

medicine and you’ll find them working as doctors, nurses, naturopaths, herbalists and practitioners of other alternative healing modalities. This is just a taste of what the Roles on the Medicine Wheel look like. The goal is to become balanced and functional in the ones that are ours. This takes awareness, discipline and humility, but it is also fun and insightful. It is an amazing thing to explore our inner community and see the Roles at work in the outer world. In our Medicine Wheel Circles, we explore our Roles in order to determine what they need in order to become functional and balanced, as well as to observe how they operate in our lives. The Healing Energy of Reiki

Ancient practice rediscovered

T

he practice of Reiki is becoming more commonplace than ever. In Grande Prairie alone, I am absolutely positive there are more than a thousand people who have either their first, second, master or master/teacher degree in Reiki. In my immediate family alone there are a master/teacher, two masters, a person with her first degree and two with their second degree. And most of our other family members have at one time or another asked us to perform Reiki for them. When I consider the number of people trained in or interested in this discipline, I find it shocking when I am still asked, “What’s Reiki?” And for the longest time I was not satisfied with the answer I gave. I always seemed to lose the person in my complex explanation. Finally I recalled something my master/teacher, Anny Slegten of the Reiki Training Centre of Canada, had, in her infinite wisdom, written: “Keep it simple.” This notion aided me in coming up with the following definition: Reiki is directed energy with the intent to heal. Neat, tidy and extremely precise. I won’t go into the history or details of Reiki or of its founder, Mikao Usui, in this article. You can easily find this kind of information in books and on the Internet. What I want to tell you is how simple it is. Two lines from a Mahatma Gandhi quote describe exactly what happens when a practitioner performs Reiki: “Your thoughts become your words. Your words become your actions.” The Reiki practitioner first interviews the client (thoughts become words) in order to understand what his or her request is. The practitioner then puts that to the Reiki energy so that the energy will change the client’s experiences into what he or she has asked for (words become actions). The old adage to be careful what you

ask for has never been as true as it is with Reiki. “Ask and thou shall receive” has enormous meaning when working with energy. What the practitioner thinks about must be very clear and focused, because those thoughts will be manifested in the physical world. In my experience, the practitioner usually has to guide the client to use more positive words. Most of the time, I hear thoughts like “I want this pain to go away” or “I never have enough.” These clients do not realize that, as they anguish over their pain or their lack, that is where their thoughts are and that is what they are focusing on. The Reiki practitioner is asking the energy that is in everything, including mankind, to perform in a certain way— healing what has to be by changing the energy of what is into something more peaceful or healthy. The practitioner asks for a certain experience to take place and the energy creates it. Although Reiki was rediscovered in the early twentieth century, I believe that the practice has been around since the beginning of time—they just called it something else. I also know that anyone who wants to can do Reiki. The simplicity of Reiki is what has endeared it to me, and the most rewarding aspect of practicing it is the difference I see in the people who have learned it and have had their lives healed with it. The results are both subtle and dramatic! Remember Gandhi’s words when doing Reiki work: “Your beliefs become your thoughts. Your thoughts become your words. Your words become your actions. Your actions become your habits. Your habits become your values. Your values become your destiny.” In Reiki, thy will be done. Plantar Warts

The probable cause or incident that lies at the root Q

uestion: I have had a wart on my left foot for a number of years. I’ve read that warts can be caused by anger or resentment. I’m interested in your comments on how to remove these warts—and on how to get rid of the anger or resentment that might be causing them.

In You Can Heal Your Life, Louise Hay gives the probable cause of plantar warts as “Anger at the very basis of your understanding. Spreading frustration about your future.” So, in your mind’s eye go back to the time when the wart first appeared on your foot. What was happening in your life? You will probably find that, right before or around nswer: At the root of every physical the time when the wart appeared, there was illness or symptom we suffer from lies some emotional upheaval involving anger or an emotional component. Your plantar warts fear about what the future held. It’s likely that are a message from your body asking you to your anger was directed toward an individual release or integrate an experience you have rather than toward a situation. Look carefully had. at the relationships in your family at this time, especially with a parent figure. When you have identified the probable cause or incident that lies at the root of the problem, you can work through the experience and release any unresolved anger you feel toward the people involved in this experience (especially any blame or anger you feel toward yourself!). Here is a technique I often use with my clients: Close your eyes and take yourself back to that time. Observe it from an outsider’s point of view. What are you seeing happening? What if you were watching someone else go through the

things you experienced? How would you support them? What would you say? I also ask my clients to say some affirmations, as this helps release the information at a cellular level. Here’s how to do it: Say the affirmation and then take a deep breath in through your nose and let it out through the mouth. Take your awareness inward to see if you feel a release—which often just feels peaceful—around the statement. Use the following affirmations (the third is from Hay’s You Can Heal Your Life): • In the places of my mind, body, soul and spirit where I have held anger, I choose to release it now and replace it with peace. [Breathe.] • I am at peace now in all directions of time and space. [Breathe.] • I move forward with confidence and ease. I trust and flow with the process of life. [Breathe.] • It is easy for me to move forward in my life. I move forward now with grace and ease. [Breathe.] A good indication that you have moved through the block is that when you recall the incident again, you no longer have any strong emotions around it, and when you picture the person you had the experience with, you do not feel the same way about them. BODY, MIND & SOUL An Interconnected System Written by Eric Plummer

T

he current upward trend in average life expectancy for Canadians seems to signal our progress as a healthconscious nation. We are living longer than ever before. The United Nations reports that Canadians enjoy one of the longest lifespans in the world. According to studies conducted by Statistics Canada, today’s average newborn Canadian can expect to live to the ripe old age of 81 years, and Canadian residents who are currently 65 years old are, on average, likely to be around for another 20 years. But not everyone is encouraged by the recent statistics. Homesteader Health owner Steve Brousson regularly deals with individuals seeking a healthy balance for their lifestyle. “We’ve seen our life expectancy rising, and I think that’s going to start shifting,” predicts Brousson from his home in Fort St. John. “Instead of having life expectancy going up, we’re going to see it starting to go down. People will not be living as long as their parents. This is going to be a huge problem.” The trauma of cancer forced Brousson and his family into a more health-conscious lifestyle. When he was a teenager, his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, sending the family on an international search through Canada, the United States and Mexico for the right treatment. To better cope with the disease, Brousson’s mother began to follow a strict diet, eating

“One of the things I think we learned from the process is that health doesn’t just disappear overnight, nor does health jump back overnight” ~ Steve Brousson only unprocessed and organic foods, and used herbs to help with the effects of cancer. Speaking about the importance of organically grown, unprocessed foods, Brousson says, “The closer we can get to the way they were when they were picked or grown, the better.” He believes that when food is grown with a minimal amount of interference, it can carry its own innate healing qualities. “The various parts have a counterbalancing effect to them, and so taken as a whole, it’s very good for a person.” Brousson’s family learned from his mother’s example. “One of the things I think we learned from the process is that health doesn’t just disappear overnight, nor does health jump back overnight,” says Brousson. “There’s not just one miracle

pill or miracle plant or miracle thing.” Brousson’s mother continued to follow her healthy diet and lived for twenty-five years after her initial cancer diagnosis. Her experience has formed Brousson’s belief that health and disease are affected by a wide variety of causes. “It’s looking at the body and looking at what you do in a very broad spectrum of things—everything from dealing with emotional stuff, to your diet, to cleansing—the whole nine yards,” Brousson says. While it is true that life expectancy is rising in Canada, so is the incidence of cancer. According to figures released by the Canadian Cancer Society for 2010, every week an average of 3,340 new diagnoses are made and 1,470 Canadians are claimed by the disease. Despite the ever-increasing amount of money poured into cancer research and treatment with each passing year, Canadians continue to be diagnosed with cancer in increasing numbers. The human body is a complex mobile factory, in production twenty-four hours a day. Within the skin is contained an interwoven collection of organic processes. Production and death, cause and effect occur down to the cellular level. “What is taking place is the interconnectedness of all of these nutrients and all of these emotional things that affect us,” Brousson observes. continued on page 14

“Everything from lifestyle to diet, to the way we think, to the way we talk, to our relationships, to how we feel about ourselves.” He believes that conventional medicine fails to understand this, and researchers instead focus on isolating variables to locate the source of disaease. “When we look at cancer and various diseases, we like to make direct correlations,” says Brousson of the medical community’s cause-and-effect attitude. “The more I learn about health, the more I recognize that’s not how the body works. It works by the interconnectedness of all these types of nutrients and health systems and organ systems that are working together.” Christie McLeod, who manages the Health Hut in Grande Prairie, AB, a store owned by her family for thirty years, believes that because of changes in food production, a balanced diet alone can no longer support the body’s complex network of functions. Like many conscientious consumers, McLeod feels that our modern diet has less nutritional value than what the original settlers in the Peace River Country consumed. “It was grown in small amounts; it was grown in extremely healthy soil,” says McLeod.

“I honestly believe that where our disease comes from is stress... The body is able to accommodate those stresses, but sooner or later something is going to give.” ~ Christie McLeod Another issue affecting our health is stress. Both McLeod and Brousson believe that by trying to keep up with the speed and demands of the information age, we are battering our bodies to the point that we are no longer conscious of the damage done with each blow. “I honestly believe that where our disease comes from is stress,” McLeod says. “Our bodies work too hard; they work too often. They’re not nourished well enough.

Brousson and McLeod both say that this adversity is most evident in customers who visit their stores looking for help in dealing with the demands of worklife balance. McLeod finds that for many of her customers, working for long, unbroken periods of time leads to insomnia and high levels of stress. “They’re pushed to the max,” she says. “The body is able to accommodate those stresses, but sooner or later something is going to give.” “The biggest thing that I see over and over is just a stressed-out person,” Brousson observes. “You get a lot of coffee, a lot of fast food, a lot of quick foods, … so the nutrient content is not there. And then they’re not always sleeping the way they should.” Reflecting on northern Alberta’s work-centred attitude, he adds, “The general idea out there is that our body is just a piece of equipment because we’re used to running machinery.” To keep the body going through an overworked period, Brousson suggests calming supplements to help with sleep, like valerian root or magnesium. Reassurance can be found in the body’s ability to adapt to adversity. “The body is created to heal itself,” says McLeod. Brousson agrees: “The body is always trying to fight for life and fight for balance. When you get the various organ systems working right, the body can turn things around.” He compares our bodies to a rope; the whole organism can continue to function if one element is broken. “What makes a strong rope? Is it one fiber? No, you can pull out one fiber of that rope and it really doesn’t affect the health of the rope all that much, but you pull too many and … all of a sudden that rope isn’t that strong,” explains Brousson. His mother is an example of this. “My mother was able to put some of those strands together and her body responded and did okay,” he says.

“Put together, you’ve got a strong rope, you’ve got a strong body, and it’s able to resist various things that your body might be faced with,” says Brousson. In order to maintain the trend of increased life expectancy—and in order to optimize our health during those extra years—it’s essential that we view our bodies as the interconnected systems that they are. ✾

Spiritual Wisdom

The voice of our authentic selves P

ioneers, people bravely looking for a better place and a better future, laid the foundations of our Western world. Our roots are tied to their searching, and the pioneering spirit still lingers in our very core. This unsettling drive that has been passed from one generation to the next keeps us from knowing fulfillment, peace and our full authentic selves.

That was the beginning of discovering the spiritual aspect of my authentic self. Regardless of our religious persuasion, spiritual beliefs or traditional practices, we all share the same truth. The answers we are seeking lie within us, if only we would listen to the spiritual voice of our authentic selves. There we will hear the voice of God: “Seek and ye shall find.”

In her early 20’s, Ravyn Moon, Spiritual Life Coach and Teacher, worked as a missionary in Brazil and studied Christian Theology in Dallas, Texas.Following a soulful journey of diverse studies she worked with troubled youth and inmates across North America. Today, Ravyn Moon promotes an Inter-Spiritual Worldview through peace, love and acceptance. Follow her blog at www.ravynwritings. blogspot.com

We are engulfed in a commercial culture that constantly reinforces the programming that we are not enough. As a wife and a mother, I am constantly trying to keep myself from becoming overwhelmed with this need to keep up. When I gather with other women, I realize that this is a commonality we all share. We fill our lives with so much distraction that we can hardly hear ourselves think. When we fail to make time for ourselves, it is no wonder that at the end of the day we are still looking, still dissatisfied, still empty. The most important relationship is the one we have with ourselves; this I am realizing more often than not. On a recent evening alone, I took the time to watch the movie Eat Pray Love, starring Julia Roberts. It was sweet confirmation of all the things that I have been learning about taking time to know myself, to listen to my heart and to act upon my truth. I highly recommend it. We have missed a fundamental truth: that the Kingdom of God is within us (Luke 17:21). The light we are looking for in our lives has not been diminished, just simply overlooked and neglected. We are so busy with this driving force that we miss God in all the moments of our lives. We fail to hear our own inner voice. Lama Surya Das explains to us in his book Awakening the Buddha Within that we will not find what we are looking for outside of ourselves. He says, “Not through lovers or mates, not with friends or family, and certainly not via material success.” He reinforces that the only way we will find our authentic selves is by finding our “genuine spiritual center. Truth is found by living truly—in your own authentic way.” We can find our spiritual center only by taking the time discover it. The first time that I really took the time to meditate, I realized that there was more going on inside my head than I had been aware of. I allowed my mind to ramble until eventually there was clarity and I found peace. I realized that my spirit had been longing for my attention.

Seasonal Influenza North of the 49th Parallel A s winter gets closer, people often asked me how they can avoid getting the flu. Before we answer this, let’s make sure we’re on the same page regarding just what the symptoms of the flu virus are. Influenza causes sudden onset of fever, chills, nausea, headaches, muscle aches, muscle weakness, sore throat, swollen glands, painful eye movements or loss of appetite. Not fun for you or the family member you have to care for. There are many easy things you can do to avoid the flu. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one of the most effective ways to reduce your chance of getting or spreading the flu virus is to wash your hands frequently. Use warm running water; apply soap, lather well and rinse thoroughly. If you can, turn off the faucet with a paper towel. Dry your hands and try not to touch anything else in the washroom, including the door handle, when leaving. You should wash your hands before you prepare or eat food; after you blow your nose, sneeze or cough; after you touch an animal or handle its waste; after you use the washroom, change a diaper or help your child use the washroom; and after you handle garbage.

In order to maintain your internal resistance to the flu virus, drink plenty of water, exercise regularly and get adequate rest. Your diet is important, too. It should be full of fruits and vegetables and rich in minerals and vitamins. Avoid processed foods. Take good-quality supplements, including vitamins D3, C and A and omega-3 fatty acids, and use oil of oregano. You can also talk to you health care provider about using colloidal silver. Lower your stress level through meditation and prayer, and consider regular chiropractic and osteopathic adjustments. Of the vitamins mentioned above, vitamin D3 is especially worth discussing in detail. Vitamin D3 has been shown to enhance both the immune system and mental function, protect against cancer, build bone and regulate insulin. The majority of us living north of the 49th parallel are deficient in vitamin D3 during the winter. As explained by Dr. Natasha Turner in The Hormone Diet, “vitamin D is made from cholesterol with the help of the liver, kidneys, and skin when we’re exposed to natural sunlight.” Unfortunately, in the winter months we do not get enough sunlight of the right wavelength to produce the amount of vitamin D3 that we need. The only way to accurately measure your

level of vitamin D3 is through blood tests, but there are some rough guidelines regarding dosage. As reported by a number of sources, including chiropractor Dan Murphy, physician Sherri Tenpenny and chiropractor Victoria Coleman, president of Douglas Laboratories of Canada, researchers have been revising the recommended amount upwards in the last few years and currently advise that, in general, adults take approximately 5,000 IU daily. However, the recommended dose will vary from person to person depending on skin tone, age and exposure to sunlight. For example, people with more melanin (darker skin tone) may require amounts up to 10,000 IU. Your absorption rate and diet will also affect the dosage. You may need four to five times more D3, or you made need less, depending how much you get from your diet and on whether you have been supplementing on a regular basis. Recommended levels for infants from newborn to two year olds are 400 to 1,000 IU. Children two to five years old should have 35 IU per pound per day, those five to twelve years old should have 2,500 IU daily and pregnant women should have 5,000 IU per day. Prevention and a healthy lifestyle are your best defenses against influenza and other nasty viruses. Consulting with your health care practitioner before beginning any supplementation will help determine the best program for your health needs. Visceral Manipulation In Orthopaedic Manual Therapy O

rthopaedic manual therapy is used to assess and treat a wide variety of conditions, including sprains, strains, chronic pain, whiplash, sports injuries, headaches, sciatica, TMJ (jaw) dysfunction and rehabilitation after fractures or surgery. Physiotherapists, massage therapists, chiropractors and osteopaths have traditionally provided programs based on this therapy for orthopaedic conditions.

it connects us from head to toe, literally. Most of us think that our skeletons are what hold us up, but if we were to remove our muscles and fascia, our skeletons would simply collapse. Our bones merely provide a framework for the attachment of our soft tissues, which do the actual work of holding us together, keeping us upright and, most importantly for orthopaedic manual therapists, either allowing or restricting movement.

Conventional manual therapy treatments typically include mobilization or manipulation of joints, massage, balancing of the length and strength of muscles, mobilization of the nervous system, reeducation in posture and movement and retraining in balance and body-part positioning. While these are all very viable options in orthopaedic treatment, there are times when they are simply not enough, and the patient is plagued by joint or muscular dysfunction despite repeated treatment. In situations like these, it is important to explore alternative treatments that could bridge the gap between the patient’s having to “live with

Through visceral manipulation, therapists can assess and treat motion dysfunction of the internal organs such as the stomach, liver, kidneys, bladder and lungs. Though we are not consciously aware of it, our internal organs need to shift, bend and twist as our bodies move. If the fascial packaging of an organ becomes compromised, the organ’s motion is also compromised. The organ is unable to move properly, creating a point of restriction or tension. This in turn may affect the movement of our spine and extremities as they work around the restriction. If such compensation continues, it can lead to a breakdown in one or more areas of the body, often causing symptoms to arise for no apparent reason. Organ mobility restriction can be caused by a number of events. The most obvious is invasive surgery, such as appendectomy, hysterectomy, open-heart surgery and organ removal or transplant. Acute trauma, such as motor-vehicle injuries, falls and physical abuse, also accounts for a large number of organ restrictions. Finally, both disease and chronic tension caused by abnormal posture can cause visceral restriction. A 49-year-old woman came to the clinic everal years ago. In addition to a general feeling of unwellness, she was experiencing soreness and occasional tingling in the right side of her neck, symptoms in her right leg and headaches on the right side of her head. She had undergone ten months of excellent conventional physiotherapy with little change. Although I found several minor biomechanical restrictions, my main assessment was that her liver mobility was

severely restricted. Two sessions of visceral manipulation directed at her liver turned her rehabilitation around. The liver release bridged the gap between her living with pain and her freedom from it. Jean-Pierre Barral and Alan Croibier, authors of Trauma: An Osteopathic Approach, believe that up to 90 percent of musculoskeletal problems have a visceral component, particularly those caused by trauma. I commonly see such restrictions, and I now incorporate visceral manipulation into my everyday orthopaedic practice. In order to determine whether visceral manipulation may benefit you, speak to a qualified practitioner. Lighten Up!

It could change the way you experience life. We take ourselves very seriously. Too seriously. Seriously! Nobody takes us more seriously than we do. And nobody is a harsher critic of us than we are ourselves. I was inspired to write this article after reading about and practicing Neale Donald Walsch’s Three Way Path: 1. Have fun with everything. 2. Spread joy. 3. Share love. These simple steps have the power to change the way you experience life.

N

umber one, have fun with everything you do. So many people think that work is work and chores are chores, not fun. Well, you can decide in a moment to change that. Once you change your thoughts about any situation, you change your perception of it, which changes the emotions you associate with it, which, in turn, changes your experience of it. You can, at any time, arbitrarily decide to have fun doing whatever your body and mind are engaged in. You can have fun grocery

shopping, at work, at a red light, anywhere and at any time. It’s up to you. Number two, spread joy. Many wisdom traditions teach us that if we want more of something, we should give it to someone else. Joy is certainly no exception to this! You can spread joy in countless ways—for example smiling at someone you’ve never met, paying for the person behind you at the drive-thru, complimenting a friend on anything you appreciate about him or her, and so on. And lastly, share love. Love is singlehandedly the most powerful force in the universe. I’m not just talking about romantic love, or love for a family member, or the love of a pet. I’m also talking about pure, deep, unconditional love. Like the light from a light bulb or, even better, from the sun, let your love shine all over, not just on this person or that one. We are all one and, now more than ever, humanity needs to reunite, re-member, and love one another. I encourage you to try these three principles, even for just one day, and see if you notice anything. Do you feel more lighthearted, more joyful, happier, more fulfilled? I found that when I starting living more in this way, my life changed for the better. I then realized that for the previous thirty years on this physical plane, I had been taking myself and everyone else so seriously that I had missed out on loads of fun, laughter, joy and love. And the more I understand how temporary

this all is, how short this life in the body is, the more I appreciate the ability to stop taking myself so seriously. This does not mean that I don’t care about what I do. In fact, I am even more passionately engaged in my life than I was before, but without expectations of the outcomes. It’s like shooting an arrow at a bull’s eye. You set your intention and let go of the arrow, but you are not attached to the outcome, knowing that the outcome is always perfectly what it should be. Our conditioning runs deep. Very deep. But the more layers we can peel back, the more fun and magical this life experience becomes. Perhaps your parents, your school teachers, your doctor and most of the people you were surrounded by in the past took everything quite seriously. Maybe the people in your life still do. That’s fine. But you have a choice: You can continue to set unrealistically high expectations of yourself, to be overly goal oriented, to keep running on the hamster wheel of life and to miss out on this awesome present moment. Or you can lighten up, have more fun, spread joy around you and share more of your beautiful loving light with the world—in a time when it is needed most. Shelyn Somani is a medical doctor living in Grande Prairie, AB who believes that good health does not merely mean the absence of disease. On the contrary she believes good health is to feel alive, joyful, loving, purposeful – full of energy and vitality.

What Do Men Need? Gwen Randall-Young

Co-create your love and be rewarded M

any women believe it is the man’s job to make her happy. There is typically less discussion about what women can do to help the man to feel good. I will give you some ideas about what men need, and the rest is up to you.

Men need to feel like men, not like little boys. If they are criticized and berated all the time, then you become like a mother. He will either rebel, get angry, or shut down if you do this, thus creating a whole new list of things for which to be criticized. Also, he will not feel attracted to a mother figure. A man wants to feel valued and appreciated. This is what you gave him in the early stages of your relationship. You made him feel like he was the most wonderful man on earth, and you were so lucky to have found him. He basked in the glow of your love, and likely gave much back in return. Often, after the romantic fervor dies down, women try to change men. Slowly, she begins to pick at him for all of his nasty little man ways. Whether it is socks on the floor the toilet seat left up, or splashes on the mirror, he slowly loses his status as most wonderful man on earth. Gradually more and more items are added to the list of his deficiencies, so soon he feels as though he cannot do anything right. Men need us to recognize they are not women, and so some of our ways do not come naturally to them. They want us to be able to concentrate on all that is positive about them, to see what they do contribute. They want us to be proud of them—to see them as winners.

100% Certified Organic Cosmetics Made from flowers! Organic Rose petals, Organic Chamomile flowers and Organic Jasmine flowers

Most men like to be shown affection, and yes, they like sex. It is not simply a physical thing. They like the closeness, and it makes a man feel good to know he has pleased his woman.

Not tested on animals, No petrochemicals, No problems, No talc.

A woman who thinks as much about giving to her partner as she does about what she is getting will be rewarded. Love is not simply something you give to another, but it is also something that is cocreated by a couple. You can love someone, but it is the “being loving” that gives life and power to your love.
